2. Existing Product 1: Paprika (2006)
• Paprika is an animated science-fiction psychological
thriller film created by Satoshi Kon. It is based on a
novel by the same name, written by Yasutaka Tsutsui
in 1993.
• The plot follows a psychiatrist named Atsuko Chiba,
and a brand new technology that allows therapists to
enter their patient’s dreams.
• The themes explored in Paprika include themes of
Identity, reality, dreams and illusions. Satoshi Kon
explores ideas of reality being simply a mental
construction, as much as an illusion as dreams are.
3. Existing Product 2: Silent Hill 2 (2001)
• Silent Hill 2 is a psychological horror video game created in 2001 by
Team Silent, and published by Konami.
• It is the second game in the franchise and follows the story of a man
named James Sunderland, who has received a letter from his wife who
died years ago.
• The themes explored in Silent Hill 2 are ones of loss, self reflection, and
grief.
• The gameplay utilizes the hardware limitations it had at the time to
accentuate the scariness of the game. With limited memory space to
use, draw distances in areas had to be low, which ended up giving the
town of Silent Hill a constant fog. In turn, this made the town much
more atmospheric and terrifying.
• The music and sound design of the game is also unique, with the hard
oppressive industrial sounds that make the areas so much more
threatening and terrifying.
4. Existing Product 3 (older): Resident Evil (1996)
• Resident Evil is a survival horror game produced in 1996 by
Capcom. The game defined the Survival Horror genre of video
games, being the first of its kind.
• This game established many conventions that would remain
staple in the series, alongside the survival horror genre as a
whole, such as its unique inventory management system, and
limited opportunities to save.
• Due to technology restrictions the game also utilizes fixed
camera angles and tank controls. Although despite this, these
decisions helped amplify the horror and fear factor of the game.
The fixed camera angles not only make the game more movie-
like, but also takes away control from the player, giving more of
a helpless feeling.
5. Research Analysis
• What common features do the researched products have?
- The common features in my researched products include the usage of
a similar control scheme in both Silent Hill 2 and Resident Evil. Both
games use fixed camera angles and tank controls, due to both
hardware limitations and also to help accentuate the horror factor.
There are also similarities within the themes of Paprika and Silent Hill 2
in their psychological themes, both narratives following the exploration
of a ‘dream world’.

how?

7. Relevant subject topic area information I
know already
• Going into my research, I was already a fan of horror games and films,
such as the Silent Hill series, Yume Nikki, Resident Evil, and various
horror games from the PS2 era such as Rule of Rose, Haunting
Ground, and Siren.
• I am also already interested in both horror and cyberpunk art, so I am
confident in my ability to create stylized artwork that suits these
genres.
8. Relevant subject topic area information I
need to find out
• What horror conventions are popular among audiences?
• How can I convey horror effectively within a video game?
I’d like to also gain more insight into the audiences for both horror and
cyberpunk, as I’d like my target demographic to overlap between the
two. I would also like to learn the specifics of what attracts audiences
to these genres.

• Interview with B
Q: What attracts you most to the cyberpunk genre?
A: growing up in a modern age where I am surrounded by technology, it’s interesting to see
an older depiction of what our current era could’ve progressed into. I also find the political
and societal overtones of the genre deeply interesting, such as many cyberpunk fictional
universes explore issues such as consumerism, wealth gaps, and inflated versions of
capitalism where big corporations rule everything. I also enjoy the technological aspect of
the genre, it’s fun to imagine such a technologically advanced future, especially from a
dystopian perspective. I think technology can do a lot of good, and also a lot of bad, and
cyberpunk tends to delve into the bad side.
Q: As you said you enjoy the darker dystopian side of cyberpunk, what are your thoughts
on horror mixed with cyberpunk? Are you already a fan or is it something you would be
interested in?
A: It’s definitely something I’m interested in. I think there’s a lot of room for creativity in
terms of a horror cyberpunk story. The mystery of new technology can be very scary.
