The 2016 US presidential race is on. Social media and news are dominated by the political candidates and issues to be addressed by both Republicans and Democrats. Which political party is leading the race in the media? This brief report is an analysis of mentions of the Republican party and the Democratic party in social media and major news sources. It's likely no surprise, which party is most mentioned over a one-month period and who is trumping the mentions. This report includes an analysis of the number of mentions, by media source, the trends, the top keywords, the top hashtags on Twitter, and top re-tweets,

2. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Based on the analytics performed over one month, the following insights are observed:
• Mentions of the Republican party are dominating
social media and major new sources
• Over 3.5 million mentions of the Republican
party are observed, compared to 1 million
mentions of the Democratic party
• Although covered in major news sources,
mentions on Twitter lead for both political
parties
• Mentions peak at similar timeframes for both
parties: June 25-26, July 9, and July 14
• Donald Trump’s announcement of his presidential
candidacy and his focus on criminal activity by
illegals are top topics for June 25-26
• Although discussion peaks are similar, the
number of mentions is significantly different. On
June 26, there are 200K mentions of the
Republican party, compared to 44K mentions of
the Democratic party
• In mentions of the Republican party, Trump
emerges in discussions, followed by Bush. In
mentions of the Democratic party, Clinton
emerges in discussions, followed by Sanders
