U.S. History Chapter 15 discusses reforms in American society during the 2nd Great Awakening including prison reform, campaigns against alcohol abuse, and advances in education. Dorothea Dix campaigned to improve treatment of the mentally ill. Temperance movements encouraged abstaining from alcohol to curb social problems. Education varied in availability and quality but reformers including Horace Mann, Catherine Beecher, and Emma Willard advocated for common schools and expanded opportunities for women's and African American education. Samuel Gridley Howe and Thomas Gallaudet also worked to improve education for disabled Americans.
