The NIFT campus used to require 15 water tankers per day. After implementing rooftop rain water harvesting to three working borewells and to one abandoned bore hole in July-2011, the water tankers supply reduced to 8 tankers from 15 per day and at present to Zero. The cost incurred for implementing was Rs 5 lakhs and the revenue saved is Rs 30 lakhs per year with almost zero maintenance required.

Jal Jeevan Mission, Karnataka
Karnataka plans to ensure every rural household tap water connection by 2024. In 2021-22, the State plans to provide 25 lakh tap water connections in its rural areas.
Presently, Karnataka has 91.19 lakh rural households, out of which only 28.44 lakh (31.2%) have tap water supply. So far, 23 panchayats and 676 villages in the State have been declared ‘Har Ghar Jal’. 95% schools and 95% anganwadi centres, 84% ashramshalas, 91% gram panchayat buildings and 92% health centres have piped water connections in Karnataka. The State plans to cover the learning centres, GP building and Health centres in next few months. There is urgent need for grey water management and behaviour change among people so that water, which is a limited resource, is used judiciously. The state plans to cover 17,111 villages falling under the priority category i.e. drought prone and desert region, SC/ ST dominated habitations, Aspirational districts, etc. in the current financial year.

Atal Bhujal Yojana: Capacity building

Rainwater Harvesting Experience at NIFT, Hyderabad_SMARAN_2013
- 1. SMARAN is a voluntary organization working for the Regeneration and Improvement of natural resources management, for more than a decade. The Head office is located in Hyderabad. We have implemented schemes Desilting of Tanks, strengthen of the Percolation Tank Bunds, construction of the Field Bunds, Roof Top Rain Water Harvesting structures for community buildings. We are also focusing on the urban areas to improve the Ground Water Resources through implementing Ground Water Recharge and Rainwater Harvesting measures. Our Motto is – (1).To use the Latest Technology,(2).Use Traditional Wisdom, and (3).Involve Peoples’ Participation.
- 4. Roof top Rain water Harvesting to Community Building at Mallepally in 2005.
- 5. Mr Subrahmanian, Retd Director of Metrological Dept from Chennai extended technical support.
- 6. Entire Rooftop Rain water(3500sft) is routed to the Live Bore via filtration drums at Rooftop inlet & Casing.
- 7. DMDE NAVAL officers quarters at Tadbund, of 4 acres including Park, adopted Inverse Bore well method.
- 8. Entire Roof top & Surface water was channelized through Drains & silt chambers into the 220ft Borehole.
- 9. Satsangh Ashram at Rajendra nagar spread in 4 acres. We can find Boulders all over 3 ft below ground level.
- 10. IBW method adopted & boulders removed with the help of skilled labour to the required pit size around.
- 11. Adopted 4 IBW methods in the entire Ashram at suitable places.
- 12. Entire Roof top & Surface water is channelized into the 4 RWH pits done thus supporting two existing Bore wells.
- 13. NIFT campus, near Hitech city at Madhapur spread in 10 acres with major buildings and open area.
- 16. The entire main building (3500sqmts) Roof top water is allowed to this structure with existing Borehole of 200ft.
- 17. Flushing is done to the Borehole to increase the Percolation & required filtration Pit arranged.
- 18. The excess Rain water of this Pit after filtration is allowed to the two outlets of New bore hole.
- 19. A slotted pipe is arranged than normal casing existing earlier.
- 20. New Bore well of 1165ft adjacent to the existing old bore hole of 200ft.
- 21. Filtration material to the new bore hole (1165ft) to accommodate all the excess rain water of old Bore.
- 22. Slotted pipe is being arranged & three outlets can be seen from the Old bore.

- 30. Two baffles arranged before the Roof top Rain water is allowed into the old Bore pit having filtration media.

- 34. There are 2 Bore wells of 300ft & 560ft depth nearby started experiencing benefit from these structures.
- 35. Annex Building of 1500 sqmtrs having 6 Roof top rain water outlets.
- 36. Two Bore wells present around the building with a depth of 560ft & executed similar method.

- 39. Routing the Roof top outlets to a single PVC pipe.
- 40. Rooftop outlets routed to the RWH pit of existing Bore wells.
- 41. Aligning the Roof top outlets to the ground level into the RWH pit.
- 42. Roof top rain water joining the RWH pit irrespective of small or Big rains.
