Upward communication flows from lower to higher levels in an organization and has advantages like helping develop plans, providing suggestions and motivating employees. Downward communication flows from superiors to subordinates and has advantages like increasing efficiency through instructions and improving discipline. Both have disadvantages, with upward communication risking distortion of information and downward communication consuming time and emphasizing the boss's interests.
