The potential for using UAVs within the construction and civil engineering industry is significant yet their use is currently relatively limited. The main reason behind this is a lack of awareness of their potential and the range of benefits that they can bring, even though, right through from planning to final construction, nearly every stage of the engineering process can benefit from the use of a UAV.

Presentation on Drones and Open Street Maps
State of the Map Asia is an annual gathering of people who contribute to OpenStreetMap (OSM) movement in Asia in different ways. During the conference, representatives from different countries of Asia presented the state of OpenStreetMap in their countries, as well as participate in discussions, mapping activities, workshops and events related to the free and open map of the world.
During the Nepal session, there were four presentations where the presenter talked about different kind of projects that are being done around OSM and Open data with the use of different tools and frontier technologies . I represented Nepal Flying Labs ,WeRobotics and gave 10 minute lightning talk on the topic : Drones and Open Street Maps. I briefly talked about the regulatory environment in the country for use of Drones and its current status. I also highlighted on the possibility of using high resolution satellite images as a Base Map in the Open street maps thus allowing any users to easily identify ground details and help them manually trace the objects more accurately.

Total stations, satellite positioning systems, GIS software and 3D scanners have advanced the capabilities of surveying. Municipalities benefit from these advances with reduction in staffing needs; creation of safer and quicker processes; and production of more precise work.
Lidar campaign & products 2014
Lidar technology uses laser pulses to measure distances to the ground and other surfaces. When the pulses return, the time of flight is used to calculate distances and generate precise 3D maps. Lidar data can be processed to classify points and extract terrain models ignoring vegetation and buildings. This allows generating high-resolution digital terrain models and other products for applications like urban planning and flood modeling. The document describes a 2014 lidar and image acquisition project over Cotonou, Benin where calibration points were surveyed and various terrain products were created from processing the lidar data.

Tacheometry is a surveying method that determines horizontal distances and vertical elevations from observed vertical angles and staff intercept readings using trigonometry. It is used for topographic mapping, difficult terrain surveys, and establishing secondary control points. Tacheometry systems are either stadia, which considers staff intercepts at stadia hairs, or non-stadia, which uses telescopes without stadia and tangential or subtense bar methods. An anallactic lens in some tacheometers reduces the stadia constant to directly relate staff intercept to measured distance. Formulas are provided to calculate horizontal distance, vertical distance, and reduced level from observed angles for various line of sight inclinations and staff orientations.

Air traffic control (ATC) manages complex three dimensional airspace. In particular, Denver Air Route Traffic Control Center (Denver Center) is responsible for a 60,000-ft. tall volume of airspace covering over 265,000 square miles! Denver Center needs a modern 3D GIS platform capable of depicting its numerous aeronautical features including ATC areas, sectors, minimum safe altitudes, airways, military airspace, airports, navigation equipment, communication information, and surveillance infrastructure. The main objective of this study is to incorporate these entities into a 3D digital twin of Denver Center, titled ZDV-3D. ZDV-3D intends to produce intuitive mediums for visualizing and analyzing ATC system interrelationships. Esri technology applications will be incorporated including ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and ArcGIS Earth. I will review capabilities and limitations of Denver Center’s current geospatial tools and highlight benefits of implementing the latest ArcGIS 3D rendering capabilities into this project. I will also address production challenges, plans for further ZDV-3D development, and ways to share outcomes with other ATC facilities. ZDV-3D will enable Denver Center to provide optimized efficiency and safety for all who fly in our increasingly crowded skies.
