Exploring the Schema Theory of Learning Essay
Theories of Learning
Schema Theory
Overview: Schema Theory is part of the cognitive theories of learning module and deals with how the
brain processes new knowledge (Chalmers, 2003). Schemata are packets of prior knowledge that have
been stored in a learner s memory. Each learner has developed schemata that are based on prior
experience and knowledge. Learners seek to connect new information with prior knowledge and use
generalizations to assist in organization of information. Schema Theory is focused on conceptual
learning and states that knowledge seeks organization in order to develop meaning (Anderson, 1984).
Contributors: Major contributors to Schema Theory include Frederic Bartlett, Jean Piaget, Richard C.
Anderson, Marvin ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This meaning is interrelated to prior knowledge and/or experience. Without a schema to which an
event can be assimilated, learning is slow and uncertain (Anderson, 1984, pg. 5). Knowledge that does
is not easily connected with previous schemata may undergo a form of schema evolution or be
discarded (Rumelhart Norman, 1980). Thus, development of new schemata or expanding of existing
schemata relies heavily on a learner s prior knowledge.
Application: Schema Theory s application in the learning environment can be seen in a variety of
ways in the learning environment. Schema Theory relies heavily on building connections to prior
learning. Therefore, it is crucial to employ teaching to expand learner s general knowledge and
concepts in order to provide a base for schematic connections. Teachers can be seen reminding
students of what they already know in order to build on previous knowledge and help make
connections to new ideas. However, teachers must understand that not all learner s schemata are the
same. A method of instruction that has its roots in Schema Theory and is often used in learning
environments is concept mapping. Concept mapping allows students to build on their previous
knowledge by connecting a cluster of concepts to a memory that is already encoded. Another way
teachers often tap into schemata theory is by focusing on skill based learning rather than rote
memorization. By

Cumberland Slider Autobiography
The Cumberland slider turtle is my favorite animal, I ll tell you all about where it lives and what it
lives in.
The Cumberland slider can be found in the South East part of the United States. They could be found
in Illinois, Georgia, and Alabama. They could be found in those states because of many people trading
them. If you see a lot of rocks near a river, they ll be hanging around there.
They will be seen in quiet waters that feature mud at the bottom. They will also be found near the
Cumberland Valley in Pennsylvania and Maryland. They could rarely be found in Tennessee and
Kentucky. They could be found in rivers that feature mud at the bottom because they could hibernate

They are known for being active. They are known for being active because turtles are usually slow and
it s fun to watch them as they move and slide into the water and onto the rocks. Your turtle is going to
move a lot when they get comfortable with their tank, so you won t just see them not moving, they
will always move. They will be hanging around the rocks you put in the tank with them because, to
them rocks mean comfortable to them.
They are also known for being fun to watch. As you see your turtle they will be on the rock a lot, and
if you see your turtle just sitting on the rock then that s called basking . As the turtles get used to their
tank, they will slide on the rock you put into your tank.
They get their name slider because they slide onto rocks and into the water. They slide into the water
or onto rocks because they are either scared or afraid. Sometimes when they slide onto rocks that s a
sign that they might start basking.
As you buy a turtle you don t know what size tank, or how to do the filtration for the tank, or you don

Human Needs In John Steinbeck s Of Mice And Men
Its said that we always want what we don t have. That as human beings we always have the need for
something. We call these necessities our human needs. In the novel Of Mice and Men which is written
by John Steinbeck we saw an abundance of characters who have human needs. The novel showed how
characters would act when they were missing these needs and to what extent they acted to relieve
themselves. The four main human needs that the novel reflected were the need for security, realism,
idealism, and connection. The novel clearly expresses these human needs.
In the novel, the prime example for a character with the need for security is Crooks. Crooks suffers
from racism because of being black and was alienated from the rest of the farmhands. Due to this
segregation, he would spend his time in the barn rubbing his back with a bottle of liniment (Steinbeck
67). The liniment is like an invisible coat of protection for Crooks, protecting him from forces outside
of him. Crooks needs this form of security because it keeps him being a realist, rather than an idealist.
The rubbing of the ointment is also what he goes back to whenever he feels false hope. An example
would be when Crooks spoke up to Curley s wife and she said well you keep your place then, nigger
(Steinbeck 81). After being told that Crooks sat down, waited awhile then he reached for the liniment
bottle (Steinbeck 83). That is why security is a human need reflected in the story.
Realism is another human need

Frida Kahlo Healing Style
The process of healing can be long and torturous; therefore, a person has to determine the best way of
healing. Frida Kahlo was a painter, who used multiple moments in her life to influence her style of
painting. She was disabled as a child after being diagnosed with polio. She was also crippled at the
young age of 19 after a traffic accident and suffered permanent injuries. As a child, she learned that
physical activity was a way to heal from an illness. However, this was not an option for her due to her
injuries. She was able to find another outlet, such as art, to allow her body to heal. Frida Kahlo did not
let her injuries hinder her ability to heal and express herself.

The World Of 1984 Scared Me
Total surveillance. Complete obedience. Absolute authority. The world of 1984 scared me when I first
read the book last year. Never before had a book made me think so deeply about individuality, society,
and government. 1984, a manifestation of my nightmares, described a totalitarian police state of
resolute submission. The horror came when I looked upon our own society, and Big Brother glared
back at me. We live in a world where every phone call, every text, every search, and every email can
be monitored and recorded by our own government. The National Security Agency, or the NSA, was
originally proposed to monitor threats outside of the United States, but the NSA began domestic
surveillance shortly after the horrific terror attacks of 2001. This cleared the way for warrantless,
unlawful tracking of American citizens. Initially, the program collected only the data of high risk
individuals in America with direct links to Al Qaeda. Now, however, government data collection has
spread to millions of otherwise innocent citizens. Government surveillance is a direct violation of the
privacy of American citizens that is dangerous, immoral, and unlawful.
It is important to realize the dangers of government surveillance; personal information containing
sensitive details about an individual s private life put in the wrong hands or otherwise used incorrectly
could potentially have disastrous repercussions. In today s interconnected world, everything that is
said and done online is

Patricia Parker s Inescapable Romance Analysis
Review of Patricia Parker s Inescapable Romance Parker, Patricia A. Inescapable Romance: Studies in
the Poetics of a Mode. Princeton University, 2016. x, 290p. Romance is a literary term that has
remained shrouded in a cloak of ambiguity for centuries. Many scholars and critics believe that this is
due to the frequent redefinition of the term by those attempting to use it as a genre, mode, or style to
enhance their work. Due to this obscurity, a study in the poetics of romance is an extensive task that is
frequently avoided but desperately needed. Patricia Parker, a professor of English and dramatic
literature at Stanford University, eagerly accepts this task in her work Inescapable Romance: Studies
in the Poetics of a Mode. Parker sets out to approach romance by focusing less on its content or
material than on its form or design a form, above all, which simultaneously quests for and postpones a
particular end, objective, or object (4). This is the inescapable quality of romance its tendency to go on
and on without regard for resolution. Her study covers five centuries by exploring the implications of
romance in the time and works of four celebrated romantic poets: Aristo, Spenser, Milton, and Keats
(7). Through this exploration of individual authors and their works, Parker is able to offer suggestions
of what, poetically, became of them, their influence, and their significance within the variations of a
recurrent mode. She is able to accomplish this

A Reflection On My Career Path
My career path has undoubtedly been influenced by the people who I have come across in my life.
Those people have shaped and molded me in some fashion be the person that I am and who I strive to
become. I have been and will continue to foster a compassionate ideology and lifestyle. My family
coming from no more than the clothes on their back, leaving a worn torn country with no education
have helped me better understand my role in life. I know and have come to a remedial understanding
of how I am able to forge a better future for myself and family, I am and is undertaking a journey of
transformation to become a counselor to serve others. I think that coming from a family with no
education background, it was quite difficult to find someone to look up to for guidance future career
options. Also, having come from a particularly large family consisting of seven other siblings, I
thought that I was overshadowed. As the middle child I was left out usually, so in turn I became
independent and select a path to help others that have similar struggles to like I did. My career choice
has been greatly influenced by my family. With many the occupations that I had over the years, has

America made me realize that I wanted go into a field helping others. My parents had to endure much

Little Brother
Being the first true group of digital natives, it is no surprise that the children of Generation Z tend to
take in information instantaneously and lose interest just as quickly, especially when it comes to
learning in the classroom. Perhaps this is because few classrooms utilize any of the 21st century
technologies that are often needed to maintain students interest, and for good reasons too. In many
works of science fiction, technology is portrayed as inherently evil, and readers are often told stories
of the the potential uses of technology that range from bizarre to troublesome, to downright
horrendous. However, with so many new learning technologies being created and made available to
the public, such as the 3D printer, touch board electronic desks, virtual reality gear, and the entirely
virtual classroom, which is still under development, students are soon going to see a change in not
only the way they learn, but also in the physical look of their classrooms.

The Problem Of White Collar Crime
White collar crime is a problem that we do not really see the full extent of; Geis and Stotland (1980)
present the argument that the seriousness of victimisation caused by many corporations is much
greater than that caused by common crimes however the public seem much less interested and
concerned with white collar crime. Some traditional criminological theories have attempted to prove
that white collar crime is not a different and separate phenomenon to common, every day crime.
Robert Merton s Strain Theory is applied to everyday crime, however his theory was in fact set up as
an economic theory that he believed could explain all types of corporate crimes as well as traditional
crimes. Gottfredson and Hirschi also provided what they understood to be a General Theory of Crime
with Control Theory, which they also believed to be relevant to both white collar and traditional
crimes. I am going to discuss these theories in detail and show how they do, and do not provide
sufficient explanations of white collar crimes. I am also going to include Organizational Theory in my
discussion which looks at the issue of understanding crime in a different way. Traditional theories such
as strain theory and control theory form a certain understanding of the issue, on the contrary some
argue that these theories are not appropriate and need twisting to fit the issue, some suggesting a
completely separate way of thinking is needed to understand white collar and corporate crime.

oldest practiced religion and philosophy. It is a way of life that is governed by a series of passages and
countless rules. These passages and rules are meant to enable an individual to further their growth as
an agent of transformations to reach the ultimate goal of enlightenment. Though Buddhism, as its
original form, is a strict and non peruvious practice of life, it provides of practical outlook on life and

the realization that life itself is suffering. Dukkha is death, decay, grief, destruction and despair. It
comprises of the imbalances of life, attachments, and the disturbances of life that cause disharmony. It
is quite difficult to accept dukkha as truth because the human mind is fragile and isn t capable of
accepting the disturbing or upsetting. The human mind is only capable of simplifying life s
complexities and ignoring what may be traumatizing. Life is only blissful when one dilutes themselves
with false pretenses of happiness and lives in ignorance. One only needs to open their eyes to see that
dukkha exists and is abundantly all around us. No one in the human race has ever existed only to live a
life of blissfulness void of death, grief, sadness, or despair. Even supposing that there was an
individual born into a life of of happiness it doesn t change the fact that they live in this world. A
world where social communication is inevitable and consequently causes human to meet others that
are less fortunate or live lives of destitute or unhappiness. Therefore the man that lives in the world of

Sometimes in life people try to dehumanize and humiliate others. This causes the humiliated and
dehumanized person to find it hard to forgive others. David found himself struggling with this concept
when he met Abraham Lincoln. Abraham Lincoln gave David excellent advice, which lead David to
the sixth decision for success I will greet this day with a forgiving spirit. Through this decision David
learned that he must forgive others with grace and mercy. Moreover, that he could not move on with
his life unless he learned to forgive all things. Not only did David learn to forgive others in this
decision for determining personal success, but he also learned to forgive his own self. When people
forgives something, they are doing it for themselves and not for others. Thus, when David decided to
forgive his own self and others, he overcame his feelings of animosity, resentment, and vengeance. In
doing so, the reader could gradually see David becoming a better and more successful person. In this

King Lear portrays his self centered characteristic by expressing his desire to be treated as king

Essay On Natural Selection
In this lab, we were given the task of modeling the process of natural selection. Natural selection is
when an environment poses obstacles and chooses to favor a certain trait over another. We created
fake paper birds for this model, with straws and construction paper. This lab showed was both
accurate and helpful and not so accurate. One way this lab was accurate, was the correct showing of
mutations and random changes over generations in the birds. We rolled the dice and flipped a coin to
figure how the birds would be affected in the new generation. This was much like how life actually is.
Most of the time, things are completely random. Also any type of mutation in the bird, can change that
bird drastically. Sometimes, the mutation can be harmful and not help the bird in any way. This was an
accurate showing by the random roll of the dice and six different changes and the coin which
controlled whether front or back would be affected. It explained how offspring are rarely ever a clone
of the parent and have everything that the parent has. This can be shown as helpful and that trait
becomes much more suitable for the environment. These genes are the ones that get passed ... Show

Natural Law And The Preservation Of Human Life
Natural law and the Preservation of Human Life
Donald J. Moore
Webster University
September 18, 2016
Natural Law and the Preservation of Human Life In order to address the scenarios in this assignment,
one must define the when life begins. According to Thomas Aquinas God created the universe and all
plants, animals and life of all types under the doctrine of External Law. Based on his vision, God
instilled Natural Law in law to fulfill the parameters of External Law. Self preservation is not only a
function of protecting one s self being, but also by ensuring the species survives. This is accomplished
through the second inclination of procreation. Aquinas teachings proclaim that God created the
universe and by doing so, created all life. So logic must dictate that life begins at conception and that
the developing fetus has already been instilled with Natural Law.
A young woman who is four months pregnant has recently discovered that she has tuberculosis. The
doctor informs her that she must take a drug that will cure her disease, but that the drug will also have
the effect of aborting the fetus. There is no other available drug that will cure her disease, and if she
does not take the drug immediately she will die. According to natural law, may the young woman take
the drug? Both the mother and the fetus are innocent human lives. Even though the fetus may not be
capable of understanding, it is still a life and is dependent upon the mother for life. However, the fetus

To identifying and looking to rectify an error, it has to investigate the root source of the predicament.
The procedure is alluded to as the root cause scrutiny. The rationale of the investigation is to annihilate

Police Searches
The Supreme Court and Police Searches The Supreme Court and Police Searches by the editorial
board for The New York Times is about the case being argued in front of the Supreme Court. The
Supreme Court of the United States needs to decide whether the evidence an officer obtained illegally
would be used in court or thrown out due to the exclusionary rule. The exclusionary rule states any
evidence illegally obtained can not be used against the wrongdoer. In the case being brought before
the Supreme Court, an officer was informed of drugs being sold out of someone s house and was
suspicious of the activity. The officer stopped, Edward Stieff, one of the men he saw leaving the house
and asked for identification. After the officer ran Edward s information he was informed of the
warrant currently on Edward. Then the officer conducted a search where he found drugs. The reason
the supreme court is involved is on the basis of did the officer have the right to stop Edward. The Utah
Supreme Court has ruled the drug evidence against Edward was inadmissible. Now the decision is left

The authors gave the background information which made it easier for the reader to understand the
basis of the supreme court case. They even stated what ammendment was being argued. The authors
also did an exceptional job when they cited the justices opinion. Citing the opinion gives the reader
information on how the justices are viewing the case before they make an official ruling. One thing the
writers did not do well was enlighten the reader on the definitions they used. For example, the writers
used the exclutionary rule when they informed the reader on why the evidence would be removed. To
someone who is not familiar with legal definitions this would not make sense. The writers did an
outstanding job with making the article

Comparison Essay About Gym Members
Working out can appeal to many different types of people. Various individuals have different
motivations for visiting their local gym. I have found that just by observing people around me while
working out, helps pass the time and distract me from my screaming muscles. In my observations I
have determined there to be three different general types of people that spend time in the gym. Those
types are: The Muscle Heads, the Average Joes and the Socials. The muscle heads are people that I
imagine would actually live in the gym if allowed. You can usually find these individuals in the area
of the weights and in front of a mirror. They are unmistakable because their bodies appear to be that of
a Greek god or goddess. They don t interact ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It could be an old friend from school, trying to maintain that high school skinny physique. It could
even be that guy from work that reads Runner s World magazine on his lunch break every day. A
simple nod or wave is a good enough greeting for these individuals. They are not there to socialize.
That brings us to our third group of people, The Socials. The Socials can be the most interesting group
to observe. They can be found anywhere in the gym, on just about any piece of equipment and
sometimes just loitering around the small tables or benches huddled in the corner. This type of
individual is easy to pick out because they are never alone and rarely have a bead of sweat on their
bodies. The female socials are spotted wearing a full sheath of makeup and their hair is done just right.
The male Socials most often have their hair gelled perfectly and are sporting the latest fitness fashion.
Socials are only at the gym to work one group of muscles; their facial muscles. They have been given
their nickname because of the activity they partake in; socializing. This group of people can even
temporarily lure in individuals from other gym groups. If a cluster of Socials find an individual
Muscle Head or Average Joe appealing, they may try to start conversation and bring them into their
web of social activity. This is attempt is generally only temporary due to the Muscle Head or Average

In investing what is comfortable is rarely profitable, Robert Arnott, famous entrepreneur. Robert
Arnott meant that you have to step out of your comfort zone and diversify our portfolio to succeed in
the stock market, in other words diversification. Diversification is one of the most important strategies
to use in the stock exchange, and since diversification is one of the key concepts you need to
understand and utilize in today s stock exchange, you will need to learn why you use it, how I used it,
and the disadvantages and the advantages of diversification. Diversification is severely meaningful in
the American Stock Exchange, and you need to know what it is, why you use it, and how you use it.
Diversification is a management technique that you use to give your stock portfolio variety. This
technique involves investing in different companies that don t go along in the same category. By
investing in different assets you are reducing your overall risk of damaging your portfolio. By
investing in a variety of industries the risk of financial loss decreases. Instead of investing in multiple
companies within the same industry such as the medical industries, you would choose several different
industries to spread out the risk. You use diversification by choosing different stocks to buy that don t

Top 10 Major Record Labels Nowadays Essay
Top 10 Major Record Labels Nowadays. Music and Business Music has several functions in the
society, such as the expression of emotions; creation of joy; communication; entertainment;
integration of a society; and the continuity of culture. These functions of music make music a human
need, which results in humans demanding for music. The human need or demand for music makes
music a valuable item (good). Therefore, humans (artists) create music as a good that can be sold for
revenues and profits. This is how music relates to business. Music is a good that many people (artists)
and business (record labels) are involved in its production, distribution, and sale for profits. In fact,
musicians have to acquire business skills that will help them manage their public image, organize for
tours and shows, design their merchandise, and build a loyal fan base. This is how music and business
are related. Main Problems Faced by Musicians Music is an industry that has a number of aspiring
artists wishing to be mainstream musicians. The road from aspirations to the establishment as a
mainstream artist is often marred with a lot of problems. These problems are failure to attract record
labels with demos; failure to have one s songs reviewed in local and national newspapers and
magazines; failure to attract people to one s show; meeting con promoters, who are not serious about
developing one and one s work, and running out of money in the course one s struggles. Successful

Essay Lorraine Hansberry s A Raisin In The Sun
A Raisin in the Sun In the book A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry, there were characters
whose dreams were stated, some of which were shattered by greed and misfortune and others which
would eventually come to be true. The first dream that came about was Walter s dream of one day
owning and maintaining a liquor store. He would do anything to attempt to get his dream to come true,
but his mama wanted anything but that to happen. His mama had a dream of her own though, she
dreamed of one day owning her own house, where her whole family could stay comfortably. She
dreamed this because in the apartment that she resided in was too small, and dumpy, as Ruth called it.
Her grandson Travis had to sleep on the couch, and all ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Suddenly, things changed, and Walter and his family came into quite a bit of money. Walter s mama
got a check for ten thousand dollars from her husbands life insurance after he passed away, which was
a lot of money in that period of time. A nice house or a liquor store could easily be bought with half of
the money from the check. Since the check was actually written out to mama, the money was all
technically hers, so all that she wanted to do with it was buy her new house for her family, but
stubborn Walter, he wanted his liquor store, and would stop at nothing to get it. When he finally
realized that his mama was never going to give him the money to get the liquor store, he took it upon
himself to get it himself. He eventually stole a portion of his mama s money to get the store, but he
was taken for a fool when the other person that he was making a deal with, stole all of his money.
Now he had nothing, and mama had only some of her money.
He finally realized that he had been wrong all along, and that he should have done what was best for
his family before he tried to benefit from the money for himself. This part of a poem by Langston
Hughes best describes his dreams: What happens to a dream deferred? Does it dry up like a raisin in
the sun... . That is exactly what happened to Walter s dream, it just sat there and dried up like a raisin
in the sun because he did nothing about it until he

Raising The Minimum Wage
According to the Wall Street Journal, more than one half of the people earning the minimum wage are
from 16 to 24 years of age. This statistic clearly shows that most of the people in America making
minimum wage are young adult that just got out of high school or college and are trying to find work
experience. Why should a low skilled young adult with no work experience make as much as a
teacher? They are doing a job that any other low skilled human could do. Jobs making the minimum
wage should not be considered to be a career, they should be a stepping stone towards your future
career. The current federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour and the state minimum wage is $8.10 an
hour. An increase in the minimum living wage in the United States will ultimately result in increased
unemployment, increased prices for goods and services, and essentially becoming ineffective at
reducing poverty. Increased unemployment is just one of the negative effects of increasing the
minimum wage. When employers are forced to pay it s employees more money every week it requires
them to find ways to pay for these wage increases. One unfortunate way these employers will will pay
for these wage increases is by laying off more employees, and requiring the employees left to do even
more work then before. Most fast food establishments in the United State are typically already
understaffed, which begs us to question what would happen if they have even less employees? Many
people go to fast food

Examples Of Witchery In The Crucible

Sexual Assault In Schools
While a great deal of crimes go unreported in the United States, by far the most common is sexual
assault. While this crime is usually associated with women being the victims, men can also be
assaulted. Sexual assault is different from other crimes, in that the victims often feel like it is their
fault that the crime happened. The majority of these victims are attending college, and are on campus
when the crime takes place. A multitude of colleges in the past have been pushing sexual assault cases
under the rug. Recently, new laws and efforts have been made so that people are aware of what
happens at colleges and are not afraid to speak up about their sexual assault experiences. Sexual
assault is the most underreported crime in America due ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

there are multiple solutions to solving the crime of sexual assault, and a substantial amount of these
methods are being implemented at colleges nationwide. While sexual assault is common on numerous
school campuses and is the most underreported crime in America, the government, along with

Pros And Cons To Georgia s Expansion Of NATO
There have always been very brief talks about NATO expansion, but nobody really knew which
country was going to join NATO. Not until a few years ago when NATO stated that they were trying
to bring the european country Georgia into the NATO alliance. NATO has been trying to get Georgia
into the alliance for a number of reasons. The biggest reason was to get protection from Russia. The
last country to join NATO was Montenegro who joined on June 5, 2017. The fate of Georgia ever
becoming a member of the NATO alliance has not been decided yet but there are many pros and cons
to why Georgia would be a beneficial member to NATO. Most countries in the NATO alliance gave

Racial Barriers in Grace Paley s Short Story Samuel Essay
Racial Barriers in Grace Paley s Short Story Samuel
It is hard to distinguish the difference between which race is more important. One might ask
themselves if white is superior over colored skin. There have been numerous struggles and much
success in the fight towards equality between the races. Although many large steps have been made,
there are still existing racial barriers. One particular struggle is whether or not people of different races
should interact with each other. Should Caucasian adults interact with young children of color? A
question that becomes especially critical when children are putting themselves in potentially
dangerous situations. This moral debate is portrayed in Grace Paley s short story, Samuel. ... Show

In the short story, Two men and others looked at the four boys jumping and jiggling on the platform
and thought, It must be fun to ride that way (191). Men normally have influence to control dangerous
situations and instead of using this power to persuade the boys to come into a safe place, they allow
the children to continue to endanger their lives. The women on the train became very angry when they
look at the four boys. Most of them brought their brows together hoping the boys would see their
extreme disapproval (191).
In the story, one woman in the subway car saw that three of the boys were Negroes and the fourth was
something else she couldn t tell for sure. She was afraid that they would be fresh and laugh at her and
embarrass her (191). It seems that the women are scared of even confronting the barrier that separates
her from the children. The racial wall is so intimidating to the women that all they could do is sit and
watch the young boys in fear of their safety.
As time passed, the racial begun to slowly deteriorate. Sometimes, motherly instincts will overcome
anything, and in this case it is to persuade the women to stand up to the children. The lady who was
afraid of embarrassment saw the boys jerk forward and backwards and grab the swinging guard
chains...She stood up with determination and went to the door (191). Allowing her maternal

Ren Descartes, The Evil Demon Hypothesis, And The...
In the 1600s, René Descartes, through his written meditations, sought out to find what we can be
certain of as humans. His plan was to find any belief that could be doubted, and throw it away. He
would do this by weeding out all the beliefs that he was uncertain about, leaving him with the beliefs
that he was certain about. Then, he wished to use those beliefs he considered certain as his foundation
for further knowledge. He went through multiple steps to come to his final conclusion. Finally, after
every phase of his mediation, he created what is called the dream hypothesis, the evil demon
hypothesis, and the Cogito argument. The dream hypothesis, which Descartes came up with through
his first meditation, is based on the idea that there is no way to tell whether one is living in reality or in
a dream at any given moment. In Descartes first meditation, he states that there are never any sure
signs by means of which being awake can be distinguished from being asleep (Descartes). He is trying
to explain his point that it is impossible to know whether reality is not just a dream because when one
is sleeping, they do not cognitively know that they are in a dream, therefore one cannot be assured that
the reality they are experiencing is not just a dream. Because some dreams feel so lifelike, it could be
possible that the life we know may just be a dream. For example, dreams are commonly day to day
experiences, like going to class, so if I have dreamed I have gone

Poor Living Conditions In The 1800s
In the 1800s and 1900s one problem was the poor living conditions in New York City and other cities.
In the 19th century, more and more people began crowding including immigrants seeking a better life
than the one they left behind. In New York City, buildings that had once been single family dwellings
were increasingly divided into multiple living spaces (known as tenements) to accommodate this
growing population. These buildings were most often cramped from the number of people who lived
there, poorly lit and and lacked indoor plumbing and proper ventilation.
Jacob August Riis was a Danish American social reformer, muckraking journalist and social
documentary photographer. He is known for using his photographic and journalistic talents to help the
impoverished in New York City. While living in New York, Riis experienced poverty and so he
attempted to reduce the bad living conditions of poor people by exposing their living conditions to the
middle and upper classes.
In 1890, Jacob Riis published his most famous work, How the Other Half Lives, a book that used

worked at many jobs, anything that gave them an income to give to their family. The most popular
were factories and mines. Other jobs were working in fields picking cotton and working in the streets.

Alam 1 Nelofar Alam Prof Smail History 101 December 10, 2015 Alexander The Great Alexander the
Great, king of Macedonia, ruler of the Persian Empire and one of the best military intelligence of all
times, he has many books written about his achievements. This paper goes into detail about Alexander
s early life, to impressive battles, to his humble personality. In this paper, I will be talking about how
Alexander came to be king of Macedonia, his invasion to unite Asia, and his mental insanity that
drove him to die a lonely death. In an amazing eleven year journey of success, Alexander the Great, of
Macedonia, took over all the way from Egypt to India. Following his monarchy came Greek
institutions and the Greek language, which became the norm way of the ancient world. When
Alexander was born, the temple of Diana at Ephesus burned to the ground. People thought that this
was a warning sign that the power that would eventually wipeout Asia had come to the world. That
power was baby Alexander. Alexander was born in Pella, the ancient capital of Macedonia. He was the
son of Philip II, the king of Macedonia, and of Olympias, a princess of Epirius. Philip and Olympias
had payed attention to their son who was growing up very fast and had potential for greatness. They
immeditly started to plan his education. His first teacher, Leonidas, was a family member and was
very strict on Alexander. He coached him how to live off very basic living, which would later help

  • 2. Exploring the Schema Theory of Learning Essay Theories of Learning Schema Theory Overview: Schema Theory is part of the cognitive theories of learning module and deals with how the brain processes new knowledge (Chalmers, 2003). Schemata are packets of prior knowledge that have been stored in a learner s memory. Each learner has developed schemata that are based on prior experience and knowledge. Learners seek to connect new information with prior knowledge and use generalizations to assist in organization of information. Schema Theory is focused on conceptual learning and states that knowledge seeks organization in order to develop meaning (Anderson, 1984). Contributors: Major contributors to Schema Theory include Frederic Bartlett, Jean Piaget, Richard C. Anderson, Marvin ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This meaning is interrelated to prior knowledge and/or experience. Without a schema to which an event can be assimilated, learning is slow and uncertain (Anderson, 1984, pg. 5). Knowledge that does is not easily connected with previous schemata may undergo a form of schema evolution or be discarded (Rumelhart Norman, 1980). Thus, development of new schemata or expanding of existing schemata relies heavily on a learner s prior knowledge. Application: Schema Theory s application in the learning environment can be seen in a variety of ways in the learning environment. Schema Theory relies heavily on building connections to prior learning. Therefore, it is crucial to employ teaching to expand learner s general knowledge and concepts in order to provide a base for schematic connections. Teachers can be seen reminding students of what they already know in order to build on previous knowledge and help make connections to new ideas. However, teachers must understand that not all learner s schemata are the same. A method of instruction that has its roots in Schema Theory and is often used in learning environments is concept mapping. Concept mapping allows students to build on their previous knowledge by connecting a cluster of concepts to a memory that is already encoded. Another way teachers often tap into schemata theory is by focusing on skill based learning rather than rote memorization. By ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. Human Needs In John Steinbeck s Of Mice And Men Its said that we always want what we don t have. That as human beings we always have the need for something. We call these necessities our human needs. In the novel Of Mice and Men which is written by John Steinbeck we saw an abundance of characters who have human needs. The novel showed how characters would act when they were missing these needs and to what extent they acted to relieve themselves. The four main human needs that the novel reflected were the need for security, realism, idealism, and connection. The novel clearly expresses these human needs. In the novel, the prime example for a character with the need for security is Crooks. Crooks suffers from racism because of being black and was alienated from the rest of the farmhands. Due to this segregation, he would spend his time in the barn rubbing his back with a bottle of liniment (Steinbeck 67). The liniment is like an invisible coat of protection for Crooks, protecting him from forces outside of him. Crooks needs this form of security because it keeps him being a realist, rather than an idealist. The rubbing of the ointment is also what he goes back to whenever he feels false hope. An example would be when Crooks spoke up to Curley s wife and she said well you keep your place then, nigger (Steinbeck 81). After being told that Crooks sat down, waited awhile then he reached for the liniment bottle (Steinbeck 83). That is why security is a human need reflected in the story. Realism is another human need ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Frida Kahlo was a painter, who used multiple moments in her life to influence her style of painting. She was disabled as a child after being diagnosed with polio. She was also crippled at the young age of 19 after a traffic accident and suffered permanent injuries. As a child, she learned that physical activity was a way to heal from an illness. However, this was not an option for her due to her injuries. She was able to find another outlet, such as art, to allow her body to heal. • 6. The World Of 1984 Scared Me Total surveillance. Complete obedience. Absolute authority. The world of 1984 scared me when I first read the book last year. Never before had a book made me think so deeply about individuality, society, and government. 1984, a manifestation of my nightmares, described a totalitarian police state of resolute submission. The horror came when I looked upon our own society, and Big Brother glared back at me. We live in a world where every phone call, every text, every search, and every email can be monitored and recorded by our own government. The National Security Agency, or the NSA, was originally proposed to monitor threats outside of the United States, but the NSA began domestic surveillance shortly after the horrific terror attacks of 2001. This cleared the way for warrantless, unlawful tracking of American citizens. Initially, the program collected only the data of high risk individuals in America with direct links to Al Qaeda. Now, however, government data collection has spread to millions of otherwise innocent citizens. Government surveillance is a direct violation of the privacy of American citizens that is dangerous, immoral, and unlawful. It is important to realize the dangers of government surveillance; personal information containing sensitive details about an individual s private life put in the wrong hands or otherwise used incorrectly could potentially have disastrous repercussions. In today s interconnected world, everything that is said and done online is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Patricia Parker s Inescapable Romance Analysis Review of Patricia Parker s Inescapable Romance Parker, Patricia A. Inescapable Romance: Studies in the Poetics of a Mode. Princeton University, 2016. x, 290p. Romance is a literary term that has remained shrouded in a cloak of ambiguity for centuries. Many scholars and critics believe that this is due to the frequent redefinition of the term by those attempting to use it as a genre, mode, or style to enhance their work. Due to this obscurity, a study in the poetics of romance is an extensive task that is frequently avoided but desperately needed. Patricia Parker, a professor of English and dramatic literature at Stanford University, eagerly accepts this task in her work Inescapable Romance: Studies in the Poetics of a Mode. Parker sets out to approach romance by focusing less on its content or material than on its form or design a form, above all, which simultaneously quests for and postpones a particular end, objective, or object (4). This is the inescapable quality of romance its tendency to go on and on without regard for resolution. Her study covers five centuries by exploring the implications of romance in the time and works of four celebrated romantic poets: Aristo, Spenser, Milton, and Keats (7). Through this exploration of individual authors and their works, Parker is able to offer suggestions of what, poetically, became of them, their influence, and their significance within the variations of a recurrent mode. She is able to accomplish this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. Little Brother Being the first true group of digital natives, it is no surprise that the children of Generation Z tend to take in information instantaneously and lose interest just as quickly, especially when it comes to learning in the classroom. Perhaps this is because few classrooms utilize any of the 21st century technologies that are often needed to maintain students interest, and for good reasons too. In many works of science fiction, technology is portrayed as inherently evil, and readers are often told stories of the the potential uses of technology that range from bizarre to troublesome, to downright horrendous. However, with so many new learning technologies being created and made available to the public, such as the 3D printer, touch board electronic desks, virtual reality gear, and the entirely virtual classroom, which is still under development, students are soon going to see a change in not only the way they learn, but also in the physical look of their classrooms. • 11. The Problem Of White Collar Crime White collar crime is a problem that we do not really see the full extent of; Geis and Stotland (1980) present the argument that the seriousness of victimisation caused by many corporations is much greater than that caused by common crimes however the public seem much less interested and concerned with white collar crime. Some traditional criminological theories have attempted to prove that white collar crime is not a different and separate phenomenon to common, every day crime. Robert Merton s Strain Theory is applied to everyday crime, however his theory was in fact set up as an economic theory that he believed could explain all types of corporate crimes as well as traditional crimes. Gottfredson and Hirschi also provided what they understood to be a General Theory of Crime with Control Theory, which they also believed to be relevant to both white collar and traditional crimes. I am going to discuss these theories in detail and show how they do, and do not provide sufficient explanations of white collar crimes. I am also going to include Organizational Theory in my discussion which looks at the issue of understanding crime in a different way. Traditional theories such as strain theory and control theory form a certain understanding of the issue, on the contrary some argue that these theories are not appropriate and need twisting to fit the issue, some suggesting a completely separate way of thinking is needed to understand white collar and corporate crime. Dukkha is death, decay, grief, destruction and despair. It comprises of the imbalances of life, attachments, and the disturbances of life that cause disharmony. It is quite difficult to accept dukkha as truth because the human mind is fragile and isn t capable of accepting the disturbing or upsetting. The human mind is only capable of simplifying life s complexities and ignoring what may be traumatizing. Life is only blissful when one dilutes themselves with false pretenses of happiness and lives in ignorance. One only needs to open their eyes to see that dukkha exists and is abundantly all around us. No one in the human race has ever existed only to live a life of blissfulness void of death, grief, sadness, or despair. Through this decision David learned that he must forgive others with grace and mercy. Moreover, that he could not move on with his life unless he learned to forgive all things. Not only did David learn to forgive others in this decision for determining personal success, but he also learned to forgive his own self. Natural selection is when an environment poses obstacles and chooses to favor a certain trait over another. We created fake paper birds for this model, with straws and construction paper. This lab showed was both accurate and helpful and not so accurate. One way this lab was accurate, was the correct showing of mutations and random changes over generations in the birds. We rolled the dice and flipped a coin to figure how the birds would be affected in the new generation. This was much like how life actually is. Most of the time, things are completely random. Also any type of mutation in the bird, can change that bird drastically. Sometimes, the mutation can be harmful and not help the bird in any way. This was an accurate showing by the random roll of the dice and six different changes and the coin which controlled whether front or back would be affected. It explained how offspring are rarely ever a clone of the parent and have everything that the parent has. This can be shown as helpful and that trait becomes much more suitable for the environment. Moore Webster University September 18, 2016 Natural Law and the Preservation of Human Life In order to address the scenarios in this assignment, one must define the when life begins. According to Thomas Aquinas God created the universe and all plants, animals and life of all types under the doctrine of External Law. Based on his vision, God instilled Natural Law in law to fulfill the parameters of External Law. Self preservation is not only a function of protecting one s self being, but also by ensuring the species survives. This is accomplished through the second inclination of procreation. • 34. Ren Descartes, The Evil Demon Hypothesis, And The... In the 1600s, René Descartes, through his written meditations, sought out to find what we can be certain of as humans. His plan was to find any belief that could be doubted, and throw it away. He would do this by weeding out all the beliefs that he was uncertain about, leaving him with the beliefs that he was certain about. Then, he wished to use those beliefs he considered certain as his foundation for further knowledge. He went through multiple steps to come to his final conclusion. Finally, after every phase of his mediation, he created what is called the dream hypothesis, the evil demon hypothesis, and the Cogito argument. The dream hypothesis, which Descartes came up with through his first meditation, is based on the idea that there is no way to tell whether one is living in reality or in a dream at any given moment. In Descartes first meditation, he states that there are never any sure signs by means of which being awake can be distinguished from being asleep (Descartes). He is trying to explain his point that it is impossible to know whether reality is not just a dream because when one is sleeping, they do not cognitively know that they are in a dream, therefore one cannot be assured that the reality they are experiencing is not just a dream. Because some dreams feel so lifelike, it could be possible that the life we know may just be a dream.
