 You will complete each assignment using a Word document
and then upload the document to the correct assignment on
ItsLearning.
 Please use correct grammar (capital letters and punctuation)
and be careful with your spellings. Spell check is available in
Word. Ensure you proof read your document before submitting
it.
 You will be given feedback on what you have done well and
what you may improve on
Work outside of class time
 You will be given assignments to complete, outside of class
time
 These will be set each week and they need to be completed by
logging into ItsLearning* (you will be given details for this
before you leave today)
 We will cover information in class to help you but you will also
be required to research in order to find more information
relating to the assignment. The information must not be copied
directly from the internet as this is plagiarism. Any work you
submit must be your own.
*You must contact the tutor ASAP if you are having trouble
logging in or are unable to complete the assignments on
ItsLearning as these are mandatory parts of the course.
Key words to meet criteria
 Describe - Give a clear description that includes all the relevant
features - think of it as ‘painting a picture with words’
 Define - Clearly explain what a particular term means and give an
example, if appropriate, to show what you mean
 Explain - Set out in detail the meaning of something, with
reasons. More difficult than describe or list, so it can help to give
an example to show what you mean. Start by introducing the topic
then give the ‘how’ or ‘why’
 Identify - Point out or choose the right one or give a list of the
main features
 List - Provide the information in a list, rather than in continuous
writing
 Outline - Write a clear description but not a detailed one
 State - Write a clear and full account
 Summarise - Write down or articulate briefly the main points or
essential features
Any questions so
far..?

Create Group Rules
 In groups of 3 write a list of ground rules that you
would like everyone (including yourself) to adhere to
for the next 10 weeks
 Each team will have the opportunity to share their
ideas and then negotiate with other teams if they
would like to keep/get rid of their proposed rules
 If you do want to get rid of a rule then you MUST
explain why
 Tutor will type up the agreed list for you to sign next
week
Getting to know you…..
What is Business
Administration?
Business administration is the process of
managing a business or non-profit
organisation so that it remains stable and
continues to grow.
This consists of a number of areas,
ranging from operations to management.
Most companies have a dedicated group
of administrators.
http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-business-administration.htm
So what is an administrator?
If you enjoy keeping things in order and like
being part of a team, this job could suit you
perfectly.
As an administrative assistant, you would
be making sure that day-to-day office tasks
run smoothly.
So it’s important that you are organised,
accurate and pay close attention to detail.
Source: National Careers Service
What type of roles are
there?
Most companies have a range of administrative roles in
different parts of their corporate hierarchy.
At the office level, there are business support officers,
who might develop and maintain an office database,
oversee other employees for projects, and help the
manager with analysing performance trends.
Administrative & Clerical job titles
Administrative assistant Legal secretary
Credit controller Medical secretary
Data entry clerk Payroll administrator
Estates officer Personal assistant
GP practice manager Receptionist
Hotel receptionist School secretary
Human resources officer Typist
When you jobsearch…
Don’t just use administrator or receptionist
The same job could come up as a number
of other things!

1.3 Explain the steps involved
in organising meetings
 Think about the purpose of your meeting.
 Work out the best time to hold a meeting.
 Make sure that the venue is accessible to as many people as possible. If you
have a multi-site university or college then consider running meetings on all
sites.
 Be aware of the time it will take to hold the meeting. Don’t let it go on too long.
 Think about refreshments and how they will be handled in the meeting.
 Make sure that there is a clear agenda.
 Give people clear responsibilities for specific tasks – is someone assigned to
inviting the guest speaker and looking after them on the day? Does someone
have responsibility for coordinating publicity?
 Make sure that the person facilitating the meeting knows what needs to be
achieved at the meeting and is aware of the time the meeting should last.
 Give someone the responsibility for chasing up volunteers after the meeting. If
people offer to help then make sure they are given something to do, otherwise
they might not offer in the future!
 Think about publicity after the meeting. Make sure that the decision(s) taken at
the meeting are fed back to those that could not attend.
What we have covered in
class…
 This is just a start on the criteria for Unit 1
 Use your notes to help you, access ItsLearning
and have a good look around the VLE to make
best use of the resources on there and also use
external websites to find information on things you
are unsure of
 Do make a start on your assignment, be careful
with the key words such as describe and explain
as your answers need to be in detail.
