Unit 1: P1, M1, D1
Why would you complete research if you were creating a new media product?
• To find out if your target audience would buy your product
• To find out how much you could sell your product for
• To find out how to make your product more appealing to your target audience
• To find out how to market your product to your target audience
Find definitions of the 4 research methods and give your opinions as to advantages/disadvantages for each one.
Method Definition Advantage Disadvantage
Primary
Research gathered by
yourself. E.g. Surveys focus
groups, questionnaires.
• Up to date
• Reliable
• Unbiased
• Raw, Un-edited
• Specific
• Takes time
• Could cost money
Secondary
Research gathered by
someone else. E.G. Internet
websites and newspapers
• Fast
• Mainly free
• Unreliable
• Could be biased
• May have to pay
Quantitative
Quantitative research is about
asking people for their
opinions in a structured way
so that you can produce hard
facts and statistics to guide
you.
• Allow for a broader
study
• Can allow for greater
objectivity and accuracy
of results.
• Using standards means
that the research can be
replicated, and then
analysed and compared
with similar studies
• Personal bias can be
avoided by researchers
keeping a 'distance' from
participating subjects
and employing subjects
• Collect a much
narrower and
sometimes superficial
dataset
• Results are limited as
they provide numerical
descriptions rather than
detailed narrative
• The research is often
carried out in an
unnatural, artificial
environment
• In addition pre-set
answers will not
necessarily reflect how
Unit 1: P1, M1, D1
unknown to them people really feel about
a subject
• The development of
standard questions by
researchers can lead to
'structural' bias and
false representation.
Qualitative
Qualitative Research is
primarily
exploratory research. It is
used to gain an
understanding of underlying
reasons, opinions, and
motivations.
• Provides depth and
detail
• Creates openness
• Simulates people's
individual experiences
• Attempts to avoid pre-
judgements
• Usually fewer people
studied
• Less easy to generalise
• Difficult to make
systematic
comparisons
• Dependent on skills of
the researcher
What research methods (e.g. primary, secondary, qualitative, quantitative) did you use when completing the
assignments in year 11 for Unit 9 (Photography Techniques) and Unit 18 (Advertising)?
What research techniques (e.g. using the library, the internet, watching videos, reading info, recces, practises,
plans etc) did you use when completing the assignments in year 11 for Unit 9 (Photography Techniques) and Unit
18 (Advertising) ?
Unit 9 –
- Internet – Google, Time, National Geographic
- Practice shots
- Design shots
Unit 18 –
- Internet – advertising techniques
- Real products – bottles logos
- Real advertising agencies
- Videos – TV adverts
Unit 1: P1, M1, D1
Primary – we made a questionnaire to find which one of our photos were the best
Secondary – We found adverts and banners that gave us our inspiration for our own.
Unit 9/18
- Primary – Questionnaire – audience feedback, focus groups – audience feedback
- Secondary – Internet – photographers/photographs/techniques
- Quantitative – questionnaire – audience feedback
- Qualitative – questionnaire/focus groups – audience feedback
Unit 18 -
How did you collate, store and use the information when researching for your year 11 units?
(e.g. did you book mark key websites? Keep a list of websites used? Print off or save any info for your folders?)
Information/research was collected and stored in the following ways:
- PowerPoint presentations
- Bookmarks
- Viewing history
- Word documents
- Blogger
- Home learning tasks
- Unit tasks
- File/folders – computer
- Files/folders – manila folders
If you didn’t use some of the methods in year 11, would use you them if you were to do your projects again?
How and why would you do this?
All research methods were used in Unit 9/18
Future projects
- Film - audiences tastes/feedback, trailer analysis, film beginning analysis
- Music video – research music videos – artists, genres, styles, techniques
Unit 1: P1, M1, D1
