• Circulation
– How many copies of print such as newspapers, magazines and any other
media have been distributed.
• Hits
– How many times a website or video has been viewed. For example when you
click on a YouTube video it counts as a view , if there are 5 million views
5million people have viewed it.
• Box Office Figures
– How much money a film has made before it has officially come out , basicly
when people watch the movie at the cinema.
• Ratings
– How something is rated for example 5/5 or 100% people enjoyed the film ,
book , hotel , etc. Websites like IMBD. Contain lots of ratings on varicose
hotels , movies and TV shows.
• Sales
• How much of the product has been sold
3. Primary Research
• Definition
– Research you do yourself for example if you make a survey that is primary research.
• Advantages
– You can focus on specific areas of that topic.
– The research is up to date unlike secondly research may be years old.
– You can ask who you want for example you could ask the manager instead of asking
pedestrians.
• Disadvantages
– The research takes longer than secondary research , this is because you have to make the
survey/questionnaire or you have to go out.
– Youre questions may not be particle.
• Example
– Questionnaires and surveys you have made yourself or interviews.
– Need to find the right people to ask as you cant just rely on friends and family otherwise you
will end up with a bias decision
– It costs money , this is because you have to print the surveys or have to use fuel to go out. .
4. Secondary Research
• Definition
– Information you use which is from other people , e.g. internet , books and
journals
• Advantages
– Its quick and easy as all you have to do is print or read it.
– There's a lot more secondary research online therefore it will cover a
larger area of the topic
• Disadvantages
– May not be in date as if you read a book from 10 years ago the data isn’t
going to be accurate.
– May not be specific as you may want another piece of information which
isn’t there.
• Example
• Using books , internet , peoples surveys and questionnaires or past
journals.
5. Quantitative Research
• Definition
– Information that includes numbers and statistics.
– It is easy to put and show in a chart or graph.
• Advantages
– You get a good idea of who likes the product.
– You also get to see what other people have said about the product.
• Disadvantages
– No views or opinions.
– Its not always up to date as it just includes figures.
• Example
– Graphs and charts
– Sales , box officer fique's , tv ratings and website hits.
6. Qualitative Research
• Definition
• Data that includes views and opinions.
• Advantages
You get to ask any questions you want when doing an interview.
You see peoples views and opinions towards the product.
• Disadvantages
This can be difficult to present as well as time consuming.
You may not be able to ask people about there views and opinions as you cant get
out the house.
Difficult to put in a graph or chart.

Surveys and questionnaires
Reviews , responses , discussions and forums.
7. Audience Research
• Definition
• This is any research that is done on your audience segments to gather information about their
attitudes , interest's , behaviour and lifestyle. Segments can also be based on gender , race and
ethnicity and even education. Finding out who looks and views a product.You can look at views for
example on a YouTube video , you can also see you whole demographic for example are they male
or female. Also you can look at TV viewing figures which can give you a good idea how many people
are watching you're show.
• Advantages
• You can see who is watching. You can also target that specific person with your content that you
create.
• You get to find out who is looking at your product
• Disadvantages
• You don’t really get any feedback on you're` program.
• You also don’t get to know how long people have watched that video or program for.
• You don’t know what they think about your product
• Example
• An example is that if you go onto the TV audience website you can not see what gender you're
audience is or what they think about what you're audience think.
8. Market Research
• Definition
• Gathering information and data on consumers , this can be divided into primary
and secondary research.
• Advantages
• You can make any questions you want.
• You can ask anyone you want or go on any website which is to do with the topic.
• You can get the most up to date data.
• Disadvantages
• Time consuming as you have to make the surveys and think of the questions.
• I costs money as you have to print the surveys and get out the house.
• Can not get everyone's opinions.
• Example
• Surveys, questionnaires , books , newspapers , websites , diary's and journals.
9. Production Research
• Definition
• Finding information and resources required to produce a piece of media.
• Advantages
• You have a wide range of sound files to access if you were making an advert.
• You have a lot of inspiration as there are lots of things on the internet.
• Disadvantages
• There is to many things on the internet to choose from.
• May not have the time to find the perfect recourses.
• You may also have to pay for some recourses such as Photoshop or documents.
• Example
– Testing the product before it has been released.
– Getting people to review the product when testing it , therefore you can see what
they think.

• Objective
– Research where the audiences feelings and opinions don’t influence
the research.
• Subjective
– Research where the feelings and opinions influence the research.
• Valid
– Finding information which could be from the internet and resources
required to produce a piece of media.
• Reliable
• Looking at information from people who are reliable and tell the truth for
example if you wanted to learn about animals you would read things from
David Attenborough. Or if you wanted to know the latest current affairs
you would go on BBC news. Overall this is Research that has the correct
data and is accurate.
