Additional Observations
• Messaging from instructors guides students
• Discussion forums might offer insights
• Instructor “notes” generate high interest
• Students need easy way to ask for help
– SIPX support desk receives many inquires having nothing to do with SIPX
because our contact information is visible
• Understand impact of document size, payment approach
– Many, often majority, of students do not have English as a first language
– Some countries don’t have mature e-commerce systems or high bandwidth
• Plan for “perpetual MOOC” up front
– Allows dialogue with content provider at the beginning

• Course can be adjusted/improved and continue forward in
better or different forms
– With quantitative and qualitative feedback

New moves by publishers Context- or geography-based pricing • 25 of 53 publishers and authors participated in differential pricing • Discounts ranged from 50%-100% off list price • Most common discount was 50% off for purchasers from developing nations (as defined by OECD standards) Base prices • Base prices ranged from $0 to $22.50 per reading – reading size, source and type varied greatly • 18% were base price $0 readings (before any applicable discounts)

Additional Observations • Messaging from instructors guides students • Discussion forums might offer insights • Instructor “notes” generate high interest • Students need easy way to ask for help – SIPX support desk receives many inquires having nothing to do with SIPX because our contact information is visible • Understand impact of document size, payment approach – Many, often majority, of students do not have English as a first language – Some countries don’t have mature e-commerce systems or high bandwidth • Plan for “perpetual MOOC” up front – Allows dialogue with content provider at the beginning

After the MOOC • Course can be adjusted/improved and continue forward in better or different forms – With quantitative and qualitative feedback • SIPX examples: extending engagements at Stanford (Continuing Studies) and UT (broad online learning initiatives) – Many other conversations around distance learning, extension classes, high school “on-ramps’

  1. Overview of the plan and what I’ll go through. Let me know as we go if you have any questions come up – we might deal with them right away or I might hold them if the subject is coming up later in the presentation. I’ll also leave plenty of room at the end for questions and discussion Want to first set the scope – have researcher background but in law and technology (a copyright lawyer) as opposed to education. So this presentation is set in the light of sharing observations as opposed to trying to define educational pedagogy. These observations will first be based on the faculty and student content behaviors we see through the SIPX platform, Then move to how schools and educators are using that data (and other data) to make decisions about how to iterate and further develop a MOOC course.
  2. On top of that, we’ve seen that access to detailed and contextual analytics is pretty new for everybody. We’re all taking baby steps into understanding how we can use this to improve education, create efficiencies, and move students to success faster. Here are some of the things we’ve identified so far… Here are some of the possibilities we are looking ahead to…
