Over one billion tires are manufactured annually using natural rubber. A tire consists of steel belts and beads, rubber, and other materials. After use, discarded tires pose environmental challenges as stockpiles can breed mosquitos and burnings release toxic gases. Some solutions to tire waste include reuse, shredding for landfills, incorporation into reefs and playgrounds, and extracting materials for other uses. Notable tire fires in the past have burned for months and spread air pollution over several states.
