The Pros And Cons Of Public Services
Under the NPM umbrella, public sector has also been experiencing a shift to greater competition. The
need to remove monopoly of service delivery and create contestability, through privatization, public
tendering, and term contracts, justifies the adoption of competition principle (Dunleavy 1994; Hood
1991). Insisting to do bureaucratic provision on public services instead of contracting them out,
knowing that private sector can deliver them better, it is believed would only force governments to
lose comparative advantages on price, efficiency, and effectiveness (Dunleavy 1994. p.49). This way,
governments are able to fulfil their responsibility in providing services and the financing, while
simultaneously stimulate greater competition among providers under market dynamics. However, it is
hard to instigate public service ethos in private parties. Therefore, the capacity of private entities to act
consistently with the public interest is greatly questioned in this scenario. Are concerns such as public
health and safety, environment sustainability, and social equity likely to be sacrificed underneath
market mechanisms? When power is shared with organizations which have business objectives apart
from government s goals, the fundamental issue is how to detect which missions they are carrying out.
Many public services being delivered by third parties are targeted for vulnerable sections of the
community which can pose a higher risk of potential abuse, neglect, exploitation, and

Max Weber s Influence On The Areas Of Individual Autonomy...
Max Weber was a German sociologist and philosopher who contributed majorly to certain ideologies
in society most especially regarding reason/rationality in relation to capitalism and how it has shaped
our present society from replying on traditional methods to becoming more modern and advanced but
not without its flaws. Weber main point of focus was on the individual intertwined with culture and
the notion of the ideal type , he was also concerned about rationalization of the society. Max Weber
addressed different themes in his life time but this essay will focus primarily on reason/rationality
coupled with capitalism and its underlying effect in the areas of individual autonomy and freedom.
According to Max Weber reason is the ability of the mind by a means of logic to comprehend, and
achieve knowledge (Weber. 1905), the concept of reason is sometimes viewed as
rationality/rationalization because rationality can be viewed as the state of being reasonable, based on
facts or reason. Rationality implies the conformity of one s beliefs/actions with one s reasons to
believe/act; in modern society reason is self consciously done which in turn has the ability to switch
beliefs, religion, and institutions. With this change there is room for freedom/autonomy and
individualism, which rationalization depends on. According to Weber rationalization played a key role
in societal advancement most especially reliving people from restrictive and irrational social laws

Fitness And Physical Activities Analysis
A. At the beginning of the semester I was not regularly active during my weekdays or weekends. I
would go on walks, an occasional run and use my elliptical machine at home but never on a regular
basis. Once, I started this course and the training peaks assignment, I began to incorporate a variety of
physical activities in order to make it easier for me to become active on a regular basis. I chose
physical activities that I would find enjoyable and even discovered new physical activities that I had
not tried before to be very enjoyable, like power yoga and racquetball. The second week of using
Training Peaks was when I began to be physically active on a regular basis, which was 5 7 days a
week. I made sure to invest at least half an hour in each physical activity I would partake it. I found
that I tend to spend more than half an hour doing the physical activities that I enjoy more, like
racquetball and riding my mountain bike. I started playing racquetball and mountain biking for forty
five minutes initially and no I have increased the time to a whole hour. I also had a lot more rest days
at the start of using Training Peaks than I do now. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Biological Pathways And Signaling Within The Brain
One field of study in the realm of biology that still leaves much to be discovered is neuroscience, more
specifically, the neurological pathways and signaling within the brain. While there have been many
developments and breakthroughs in identifying areas of activity and neural pathways, there are still
many obstacles to overcome and discoveries to be made. The authors of the journal High fidelity
optical reporting of neuronal electrical activity with an ultrafast fluorescent voltage sensor sought to
overcome one such obstacle. They understood the potential for fluorescent proteins to be used for
visualizing the firing of action potentials throughout neuronal pathways of the brain, but realized that
such proteins were unable to accurately record higher frequency signaling across synapses where there
was frequent action potential activity. Within this journal, they describe the methods used to produce a
new fluorescent protein, accelerated sensor of action potential 1(ASAP1), and the benefits that it can
provide to the field of visualizing the activity of action potentials as they propagate through synapses
in the brain. They hypothesized that ASAP1 should be able to give definitive fluorescent readings for
the activity of action potentials propagating through the brain, even in areas with high frequency
activity that have not been measurable before. In order to create this revolutionary new fluorescent
visualization protein, the researchers had to test it in many

D-Day The Invasion Of Normandy Essay
The Battle of Normandy was a turning point in World War II. Canada, America, and Great Britain
arrived at the beaches of Normandy and their main objective was to push the Nazi s out of France. The
Invasion at Normandy by the Allied Powers winning this battle lead to the liberation of France and
Western Europe. Most importantly Hitler was being attacked from both the eastern and western front,
and caused him to lose power. If the Allied Powers did not succeed On D Day, Hitler would ve taken

was put in charge of Operation Overlord the long waited for attack on mainland Europe. Such an
attack would require detailed and meticulous planning which is why Eisenhower was picked to lead
this plan by the combined chief of staffs. In excerpts from General Eisenhower s document the Order
of The Day which he gave to the soldiers on D Day he states In company with our brave Allies and
brothers in arms on other fronts, you will bring about the destruction of the German war machine, the
elimination of Nazi tyranny over the oppressed peoples of Europe, and security for ourselves in a free

Bomb Calorimeter Essay
Bomb calorimeter The Usages Introduction:
Like other calorimeters, the bomb calorimeter is used to measure the amount of heat that is released
by an exothermic reaction. The term bomb refers to its usage of a sealed container that contains an
even smaller container within that can endure high pressures. Inside the smaller container which is
surrounded by water, the reaction takes place.
The main difference between a bomb calorimeter and all the other types of calorimeter is that the
change in enthalpy (Ī”H) isn t being measured. Instead, the change in internal energy(Ī”U) is measured.
q reaction = (q water + q bomb)
A bomb calorimeter is made up of:
the bomb to contain the reaction
the water bath
stirrer
ignition box
thermometer
Because it is a sealed container, it is safe to say there is very minimal heat loss when using a bomb
calorimeter which makes it the optimal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many kinds of fuel like biofuel, oil, gasoline, kerosene, coal uses the bomb calorimeter to determine

Let s Stop Judging A Book By It s Cover
Just like Ghandhi said, an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind. There are plenty of times,
when we accidently may judge someone we don t know. For instance, when first going to a new class
full of people, or even a job interview. Isn t it crazy how one small conversation with someone you
don t know can change your total perspective on them? Personally, it happened to me so many times
and the people I thought were weird turned out to be one of the coolest people I know. Let s stop
judging a book by it s cover and actually read it and interpret it s true meaning.
Kwame Anthony Appiah, who is the author of the book Cosmopolitanism is also the Laurance S.
Rockefeller University Professor of Philosophy and a member of the University center for Human
Values. Appiah believes that conversation can help end separation and boundaries people have around
the world. Conversation can allow for cultural exchange, acceptance and resolve differences. After
reading Making Conversation and the Primacy of Practice I believe conversation works as a positive
model for resolving and managing world problems to a certain extent, depending on the
individual/people you are talking to. Overall, some people you will try to converse with may be hard
headed and so stuck on their views and others will be willing to compromise. Either way, conversation
opens doors to new thoughts, perspectives, and voices to unheard views.
Just like in math, there are so many ways to solve a problem. Just

Gideon replies, countering what the stranger said, Oh my Lord, if the LORD be with us, why then is
all this befallen us? (Judges 6:13) The first Lord used in this sentence is aĢ‚doĢ‚n, it s root meaning:
(meaning to rule); sovereign, that is, controller (human or divine): lord, master, owner (Strong s
Concordance H113). Here we see Gideon addressing the stranger politely, but he doesn t realize that
he is talking to an angel of the Lord. Gideon also presents more doubts to the stranger later on in
verses 13, and where be all his miracles which our fathers told us of, saying, Did not the LORD bring
us up from Egypt? but now the LORD hath forsaken us, and delivered us into the hands of the
Midianites. Gideon at this point may be wary, he doesn t know this person , plus he was just
interrupted, his hiding place for threshing wheat was found out. Gideon s language contains questions
and he also states his doubts, he mentions that he believes the Lord has forsaken them. So far the
characteristics Gideon portrays is fearfulness, and doubt. In verse 16 of Judges 6, the Lord tells
Gideon, Surely I will be with thee, and thou shalt smite the Midianites as one man. This obviously
perks Gideon curiosity as we see in the next verses (17 18); he starts to realize with whom he may be
conversing.

Essay On Mercury Pollution
Mercury pollution occurs from industrial sources such as mining, power plants and coal combustion
centers. When mercury is released from the sources, it can travel halfway around the world before it
ever enters into the waterways and contaminates the fish that we then eat. Through the trade of those
fish, people in every continent are at risk for mercury pollution. Newborns are also at risk of mercury
pollution due to the consummation of fish by their mothers, thousands of babies are at risk every year
of impaired motor skills ( Reduce Mercury Pollution ). In order to reduce the pollutants of mercury we
need to implement a policy to clean up sites already contaminated, limit the amounts discharged into
the water and provide consumers on tips to reduce their exposure to it. My first step in decreasing the
amount of mercury is to focus on the areas that are already contaminated. They would priority since
the mercury would have had time to sit and settle and we would want to clean it up before it causes
further harm. Some of the sites would be cleaned up under the EPA s superfund policy. One example
of a site that is being cleaned up is the Carson River Mercury Site in Nevada. This is the former sites
of mills and mining that have contaminated the soil, waterways and fish over a 50 mile stretch.
Nevada at one time recommended that limited consumption of fish and duck from the river should be
in effect. State and federal actions are being performed in order to excavate and remove the
contaminated soils and they were sent to a mineral resource recovery facility. That action has already
reduced the amount of exposure during the monitoring period and they plan to add a layer of clean
topsoil to reduce the exposure to any mercury soil left behind. They have also worked in sampling 26
different developments for mercury affects and levels. They are working on figuring out the cost and
benefit of cleaning up the rivers sediment to try to remove the mercury from the river, wetlands and
reservoir. In the meantime short term cleanup will be done in order to prevent threats to the
population( Carson River Mercury Site ). The second step in my policy to reduce the mercury levels
would be to limit the amount of discharge

In this sometimes heartbreaking, inspiring novel, Rob Horton, a glum, twelve year old boy living his

The Old Masters And The Racer By Amit Chaudhuri
In daily life, people encounter many concepts such as emotions, thoughts, actions, and situations.
These concepts can often be categorized into two atmospheres: positive and negative. In The Old
Masters and The Racer, Amit Chaudhuri and Hanif Kureishi convey their atmospheres through
character relationships involving greed and symbolic ideas. Within The Old Masters, the reader is
focused on the relationship between Pramathesh and Ranjit two colleagues who work together and
their lives as time progresses. Throughout The Racer, the reader experiences the failing marriage of a
husband and wife and their desire to compete in a race and win to show superiority over one another.

Through this connection, Chaudhuri creates a positive atmosphere by the meaningful importance of
the paintings and their depiction of Pramathesh s career, success, and life. Although Kureishi presents
symbolism through the race between the husband and wife, it contributes to a negative atmosphere
generated within The Racer. After the race begins, the reader follows the husband s path and thoughts
throughout the race. The husband passes many pedestrians such as a polish builder... a lawyer... and a
journalist. He also noticed couples who could abide one another all day, who would eat breakfast
together and enjoy other activities. He flew past Tesco s and several corner shops and charity shops.
When he peered inside one shop, it exposed him to the reality of living alone and having to learn to
live again. Towards the end of the story, the husband came up to the vast surprise of the river and
eventually reached the bridge. At the bridge, he felt a spark of agency driving his body forward. He
[tossed] his wedding ring over the side and continued running, imagining a pile of golden ones down
there, the... bitter debris of love, and a tribute to liberation. He eventually stopped and ran in the
opposite direction, realizing that anyone who is running from something is running towards something
else. Throughout The Racer, the husband reflects upon his current life situations and the depressed
realities he will face when he

Doubt Movie Essay
Doubt by: John Patrick Shanley (Movie directed by: John Patrick Shanley) We watched the movie
version of Doubt (2008) by: John Patrick Shanley, he also wrote the play Doubt: A Parable (2004),
which the movie Doubt is based on. This movie was really good, I liked it more than I thought I was
going to too be honest. The end was just like whoa, wait what so did he do it or not and your thinking
it could go either way. I see what you meant by the audience being sided afterwards this movie would

about a lot of movies, especially the two sided ones. Philip Seymour Hoffman played his role so well
he was just amazing to watch, it was captivating; it almost felt like you were in the room with them

Essay On The Chimney Sweeper
Set in the times of the Industrial Revolution, Blake s The Chimney Sweeper is a powerful attempt to
fight one of the biggest social injustices at the time: child labour. He illustrates the heartbreaking life
story of thousands of kids through two different points of view, one is exposed in the poem pertaining
to Songs of Innocence (1789) and the other one is exposed in Songs of Experience (1794). Both
poems share the same outline; however, it is the narrator s view the one that changes drastically
between the poems. In the eldest version, the author presents the readers with a young chimney
sweeper full of hope and aspiration whereas in the most recent poem the author reflected a slightly
more experienced child that does not believe in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the second one, however, the rhyme scheme was not as defined and there were even some free
rhyme verses. As it would be expected, this breaks completely the musicality of the poem making the
verses sound sharp and losing all possible flow.
Both versions share a common idea that is widely discussed: religion. In the first poem when guided
through Tom s dream, an angel is the one that set the children free. After escaping the coffins, which
represent the chimneys they have to sweep daily, the young chimney sweepers arrive in paradise,
where no worries or sad thoughts seem to exist. When Tom finally wakes up, he comforts himself with
the idea that once they die, the reward for all his hard work will be heaven. In other words, the only
hope they have left is the paradox of having a life after they pass out. Blake managed to first create a
very soft atmosphere in the first stanzas and then progressively darken the environment until reaching
its climax at the end.
(Insert quote)
In contrast, in the second poem, the chimney sweeper has lost all of the faith he had left. He explains
how his parents abandoned him to live this life on his own. He even suggests that they lie to
themselves trying to find comfort in idealistic situations that are very far from his daily life reality.
The young narrator is very critical with religion for using their situation to win adepts

Knowledge And Epistemology And The Philosophy Of Knowledge
According to the oxford dictionary belief can be defined as an acceptance that something exists or is
true, especially one without proof . Beliefs are the best factor that influence in the decision making
process. In other words, the beliefs students hold have a great effect on the perceptions and the
judgments they make about the world. In education and especially in social sciences beliefs are
studied through epistemology. Epistemology is the philosophy of knowledge and how it is
acquired(Bryman, 2016). Beliefs are mostly developed through social interaction and direct messages
that we receive from our surrounding. This belief may develops in a long period of time or may be it
takes only a minute if the message received or social interaction is so powerful(Tillema, 1998). Beliefs

Positivism is based on the principle that knowledge is acquired when tested through senses and is
based on facts. As it is more scientific phenomena then it is based on the objectivity or fixity of
knowledge(Bryman, 2016). Whereas, constructivism states that knowledge is constructed through
social agents and it is in the constant state of revision. Hence it promotes variability of
knowledge(Bryman, 2016).
As Pakistani society is based on the concept of fundamentalism, which promotes the fixity of
knowledge, hence the students who are produced through this education system of Pakistan have more
or less positivist beliefs which concerned to the fixity of knowledge(Skov, 2007). So beliefs shape
behavior which can be seen in the actions of the students. To understand the beliefs of Student
teachers we just look at the ways they respond to the fixity of knowledge. So if I see the bigger
picture, the understanding of the beliefs of teachers are essential to bring change in teacher education
programs(Tillema, 1998).

Waterfall Model Is Based On Sequential Process
Waterfall model is based on sequential process that is used in software development process. It takes
place in steps. It is called as waterfall because it moves step by step in downward direction. As seen in
manufacturing and construction site, each process is well structured and carried out step by step, in
software development Waterfall model carries out all phases in sequential manner. All the phases like
Conception, Initiation, Analysis, Design, Construction, Testing, Implementation and Maintenance are
carried out in a sequential manner, step wise. It is stated that the first formal description of Waterfall
model was made in 1970 in the article written by Winston W. Royce. Though the first use of waterfall
model was made in 1976 in the article written by Bell and Thayer.

The Criminal Justice System ( Nics )
Introduction
The Criminal Justice System (CJS) is one of the major public services in the United Kingdom. There
are six core agencies complemented by a number of voluntary groups. Gibson and Cavadino (2008,
p9) suggest that the Criminal Justice System encompasses all the procedures and practices that flow
from detection and apprehension of offenders right through to the rehabilitation of offenders . The
Criminal Justice System is a process through which various agencies work together to ensure that
people who commit crimes are brought to justice; it exists to protect the public by reducing crime.
One of the most integral components of the CJS is that of the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) who
are responsible for prosecuting criminal cases investigated by the police. They act independently with
the role of prosecuting cases firmly, fairly and effectively when there is enough evidence with a
realistic prospect of conviction (CPS, n.d). This component of the CJS has not been without its
problems of controversy but has improved to become the agency that it was intended to be over time.
This report aims to describe and summarise the role and importance of the Crown Prosecution Service
within the Criminal Justice System. Reference to other agencies including the work of the Police, the

been going on for centuries, and has continued long after Scotland joined the United Kingdom in

whereas the English felt that the Scots may take sides with France and rekindle the Auld Alliance

prices is expected to provide a lucrative source of tax revenues (Keating, 2017). However, the falling
revenues disclosed by the North Sea coincide with the sinking oil prices (Keating, 2017) at the start of
2015, portraying the volatility of such commodities, as tax revenues from North Sea oil and gas
production tend to be unstable over time. Therefore, an economy based largely on oil would be too
subject to oil s price fluctuation (The Guardian, 2015), leaving Scotland in a more vulnerable position
than it already is in. Considering that Scotland s fiscal stance is based on an uncertain commodity
market and an ambiguous hope of joining the EU, Sturgeon s belief that a shortfall would be
compensated through additional economic growth is questionable. Potential Benefits of Independence

Bank Of Americ An Ethical Dilemma
An ethical dilemma plays an important role in business. Ethical dilemma moral situation where a
choice have to be made between two equally unwanted alternatives. While a business dilemma
according to Fernando (2009) is when the decision maker of organization meets a choice between two
or more variants that will have a different influence on income, competitiveness and shareholders of
organization. As the chairman and CEO of Bank of America, Lewis takes a responsibility to instruct
the shareholders about the adverse conditions with Merrill Lynch merger. The same applies goes to
Thain who deluded shareholders about financial problems in Merrill Lynch and the bonuses paid.
Another point is that Thain and Lewis pay out bonuses before acquisition of the deal. On the other
point of view, Lewis had responsibility to the overall well being of the U.S and global financial
system. Another major crisis will affect Bank of America shareholders and customers. No matter what
Lewis chooses, anyway it will influence to a lot of people. The best choice was to choose one that will
minimize the damages. Obviously, Lewis and Thain should not pay out bonuses before acquisition.
They acted unethically, but if Thain reveal the bonuses before the acquisition, it will impact on his

A Good Friend
In today s world, many people are backstabbing and downright terrible. A good person, much less a
good friend is hard to find. It may be difficult for one to figure out who their true friends really are,
and in a time of need, one may be left wondering if they have any friends at all. Good friends are
usually found in small groups, maybe even just two people. A good friend is someone who cares about
you and will almost never let you down. To me, a good friend is loyal, is someone you can laugh with,
and is someone who can give you advice. Most importantly, a good friend will be loyal. For example,
a good friend might put their best friend at the top of their priority list when it comes to spending time
with them. A few weeks ago my best friend Makenzie invited me to go spend the day with her and her
family at Clarkco State Park where they were camping. Although I had already made plans to go on a
date with my boyfriend that day, I decided to cancel the plans with him in favor of spending time with
Makenzie. Best day ever in my opinion. On the contrary, a good friend will not go behind their friends
back. Even Though two best friends may not agree with each other every once in awhile, they will
never talk badly about them or share their friend s secrets. Obviously, the most important defining
quality of a good friend is their loyalty. Additionally, a good friend is someone who can laugh with
you. I personally am very clumsy, and my best friend definitely knows that. The

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Carbohydrates
Do you know that foods high in fat and calories can leave you feeling fatigued, since they require
more energy to digest? To stay alert all day, start by making smarter choices about what you are using
to fuel your body. I have written the 12 power foods that will give a powerful boost to your daily diet.
Carbohydrates: Carbs have gotten a bad reputation in recent years, but before you swear off bread for
life, it is important to note that not all carbohydrates are created equal. Carbohydrates offer fuel to the
body in the form of glucose, which is the best energy source for the brain and central nervous system
two vital body systems. A diet rich in whole grains and complex carbohydrates is necessary for
energy; find these in fruits and vegetables such as sweet potatoes and foods made with whole wheat.

A versatile ingredient, brown rice can be served as a side dish with your favorite lean proteins (along
with nutrient packed veggies!) for a powerhouse lunch or dinner. Sweet Potato: High in carbohydrates
and loaded with beta carotene (vitamin A) and vitamin C, these will help fight off midday fatigue.
Bonus: Kids will love this sweet treat at mealtime. Try them mashed or cut into strips, tossed with a
little oil and baked for a healthier alternative to French fries. Honey: A spoonful of honey is nature s
equivalent of an energy drink. Low on the glycemic index, this natural sweetener acts as a time
released muscle fuel during exercise and helps replenish muscles post workout. Add a sweet drizzle to
anything from breakfast yogurt to afternoon tea. Fruits Fruit offers a significant dose of glucose,
which your body can easily metabolize into energy. Most fruits can be digested in under half an hour,
which makes them a quick, nutritious way to get a burst of

Simplified title
Improvement of stem cell differentiation to pancreatic Ī² cell for transplantation into diabetics.
2) Project summary
Ethical concerns regarding the use of embryo derived embryonic stem cells (ES), and the immune
response elicited by differentiated ES cells, are being circumvented by using induced pluripotential
stem cells (iPSCs) derived from patients somatic cells. These can be differentiated into other cell types
including pancreatic ļ¢ cells for diabetics. Unfortunately aspects of iPSC DNA regulation of
differentiation impair the production of cells for transplant. Understanding the role of micro RNAs in
iPSC differentiation could improve the therapeutic application of iPSCs.

Immigrants In The Antebellum Period
With different time periods comes contrasting views, problems, and achievements. The settlers in the
colonies faced different hardships, but also had some similarities with immigrants in the Antebellum
period. The settlers from the Antebellum period came from Ireland and Germany, while the colonists
came from England. Despite being in different time periods and involving diverse groups of people,
these immigrants had many similarities, and differences. The people in both time periods had reasons
for immigrating, faced problems, and had goals they wished to achieve upon their arrival.
The Antebellum period took place before the Civil War, and after the Civil War of 1812. Brought on
by a need for laborers and immigrants in search of economic opportunity, this time period was
significantly shaped by many factors including the rise of abolition and the prominence of slavery. The
United States offered more jobs and opportunity to make a living rather than either starving or dealing
with political turmoil. Around 7 million people migrated to America from 1820 1870. One third of this
new population was Irish and one third was German. Around 1845 in Ireland, a potato famine struck
and caused millions of Irish people to starve. Because of this, over 1.25 million Irish moved to the
United States to escape it. The Irish immigrants were mostly poor and unskilled, while the immigrants
from Germany were skilled laborers and professionals who came from various economic classes. The

Isambard Kingdom Brunel s Groundbreaking Bridges
1. Introduction Isambard Kingdom Brunel was unequivocally one of the greatest engineers to have
ever lived in this country, or any other. He was recently voted as the second greatest Briton of all time,
second only to Winston Churchill, which is testament to the physical legacy he left behind.
Additionally, he was represented in the 2012 London Olympic opening ceremony which outlined the
industrial revolution and the forging of modern Britain. His influence in almost all branches of
engineering is vast, from shipping to the railway. This project highlights Brunel s civil engineering
work by examining some of the bridges that he built. Brunel s solutions were groundbreaking and
critics often questioned his designs. The Clifton Suspension Bridge had the longest span of any bridge
in the world when it was completed; the Maidenhead Bridge was both the largest spanning brick arch
bridge and the first to use a flattened arch form; and the Royal Albert Bridge was built using lenticular
iron trusses.
2. Historical Review Brunel was the son of French parents: Marc Brunel (a civil engineer) and Sophia
Kingdom. He was born in Portsmouth where his father worked as a practising engineer. Brunel was
taught by his father from a young age and as a result had a solid grasp of basic engineering principals.
He studied in France, attending one of the best secondary schools in Paris, before serving an
apprenticeship with a clockmaker. After this he returned to England and assisted his

Analysis Of The Poem Native Guard
A traumatic event will never define a person s identity, it will never prove character, or show
weaknesses. A person is defined by much more than a single life event. Natasha Trethewey uses her
confusion and hurt that she experienced as pieces for an artwork that has yet to be finished. By writing
Native Guard, Trethewey recreates herself like a disjointed collage. Using gut wrenching poetry as her
medium, Trethewey uses her words to represent a self portrait of her struggles. Giving the reader a
chance to immerse themselves completely within Native Guard , her audience is a key element
throughout the book. You, as the reader, become an empty shell for Trethewey to build herself anew; a
skeleton structure for a new identity. Instead of showing herself to the reader entirely, Trethewey uses
her own complex emotions to establish intimacy with the audience. You experience her emotions as
raw as she writes them. In her poem, After Your Death, Trethewey seems to walk you through her
actions, I found it half eaten, the other side / already rotting, or like another I plucked / and split open
being taken from the inside, (13). When you look at this at face value it seems meaningless,
monotonous, and something that shouldn t be included in a poem about mourning.
Nevertheless, Trethewey lets her emotions and thoughts seep through specific words of the poem.
With phrases such as rotting, split, and plucked you can see a hidden aggressiveness that only shows

Analysis Of The BookO Pioneers, By Willa Cather
A woman running a farm was a taboo topic in the late 19th century. She was met with sexism and
resentment from her peers. In O Pioneers!, the narrator, Alexandra Bergson, shares the same
perseverance and feminist perspective as the author Willa Cather does; in addition, the novel reflects
the hardships and strengths faced by American pioneers in the 1890 s. Cather was inspired by the vast
possibility of the land that she grew up in, and incorporated that important aspect of her life into the
novel. Professor Amy Ahearn elaborated that Cather put the shaggy grass country at the center of the
novel, and allowed the form of the land to provide the structure of the book (Ahearn). Her precious
childhood hometown was the basis of the setting of her novel. Alexandra s parents similarly
immigrated to Nebraska from Norway, and ran a large and successful farm. As her father was dying,
he gave her the responsibility to run the farm in his place, as she was the one best suited for the task,
surpassing her brothers. Further, journalist Amy Ahearn describes that Alexandra had lost her gaiety
and her femininity as she domesticated and enlarged the property (Ahearn). As she ran the farm, she
consequently had various aspects of her persona changed. As a result of her hard work to change and
run the farm, Alexandra herself changes from a quiet lady to a prudent tomboy. She was faced with a
responsibility she felt obligated to carry out, because she wanted to make her father proud

Maori Art Essay
When looking at Maori art, there is one thing that sticks out amongst everything else with me, and
with most likely everyone that sees it for the first time, this is their tattooing skills. They are equipped
with many other art skills such as their carvings, weaponry, and townhouses, but the tattoos represent
the tribe as a whole and are visible on the people themselves.
The art of tattoo was brought to New Zealand by the Polynesians when they migrated to New Zealand.
Men of the tribe are more elaborately tattooed than the women. Their entire faces may be covered as
opposed to the women who may only have certain parts of their faces covered such as their chins,
cheeks, upper lips, and between the eyebrows. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although these tattoos are significant to the Maori, some people may see these tattoos as a way of
decorations for barbaric people. In society, we know face paint to symbolize war and hate such as the
Indians on television. If one were to see the Maori, they would think that the Maori were either going
to war or just returning from a battle.
The women receive their tattoos also through achievement and hereditary claim, but to a lesser extent.
Examples of these are tattoos on the nose, which represent sevants, or tattoos on the back of the legs
that represent that the woman has married outside of her tribe. Genital tattoos protect the woman and
her children of future hereditary claim.
Meetinghouses were of great importance to all tribes across New Zealand. These houses were the
symbol of the past for the tribe. They were the most elaborately decorated houses in the village. If
another house were to be more beautiful, it would be an insult to the tribe. Here, the reflections of the
tradition, spirit, and history could be seen in the carvings and elaborate designs in and around the
house. The area in front of the meetinghouse was most important than even the house itself. Inside,
carvings of figures of ancestors and gods told the story of the tribe and it s history. The Maori gather
here to mourn, celebrate, discuss family matters, or whatever the occasion.

Segovia s Appreciation
AndrƩs Segovia is known to have brought the classical guitar from its previously low reputation. The
guitar was known for centuries as the peasants instrument; Segovia s arrangements and performance
style made this beautiful instrument into one of artistic importance on the concert stage. Some
admirers believe that Segovia left his instrument richer in technique, in repertory and in public esteem.
As a student myself, I owe my deepest gratitude to Segovia. He has left monumental arrangements,

Asturias (Leyenda), one of his most famous arrangements, is a part of every developed classical
guitarist, including myself. Having listened to many recordings, very few people play it like the
arranger himself. Although it is different in the first place because it was originally composed for
piano, performers often change the tempo and include, accents and robato to give the piece a very
Romantic feel. These same restrictions can be found in another piece called Torre Bermeja by Albeniz
as well. There are similar styles in the way Segovia plays both of these pieces. I believe that it is
because of Segovia not being able to be creative and open minded to the multiple ways a piece can be
played. Some flavor is lost here, as the impression the listener receives from m. 1 15 of Segovia s
recording is more of a mysterious impression rather than allegro, which only takes effect on the
introduction of the triplet motif. The effects of Segovia s alterations to articulation in the first section
become evident in the recording, but are inevitable. Although the notes on the guitar do not take off
with the effect of the same passage played on the piano, Segovia still manages to maintain a marcato

Analysis Of The Article Reinventing The Veil
The role of the veil in Persepolis
One of the most controversial topics concerning Muslim women s rights is the idea of the veil. It is
believed by some Muslims that the veil is an Islamic obligation that all Muslim women must adhere
to. But nowadays, the veil can have different meanings that are not necessarily religious. In her article
Reinventing the Veil, Leila Ahmed addresses some of the different meanings that the veil can have.
Marjane Satrapi explores one of those meanings in her animated autobiography Persepolis (2008). In
Persepolis, Marjane tells the story of her rebellion against the Iranian Islamist regime that takes over
Iran, oppresses women, and forces them to wear the veil. What was interesting to me was seeing
Marjane wear the veil without being oppressed, although she does not believe in it, and is being forced
to wear it. In Persepolis, Marjane Satrapi escapes being a subject to the Iranian Islamist ideology by
establishing her individual identity through transforming the veil from a means of oppression into a
means of feminist rebellion.
In an interview conducted by MovieWeb, Marjane notes that the film isn t political, historical or
sociological. The film simply holds a humanistic message that says that human beings anywhere is the
same, and they have the right to live (Satrapi.) This humanistic message is what we see Marjane
fighting for in the film. She is striving to live a normal life, and one of the things that help her do that
is the veil. She

The Importance Of Music On Music
Studies have shown that music helps improve memory, increase focus, helps you become more
creative, reduces stress, increases your IQ, and stimulates both left and right brain while studying.
Music has been proven scientifically to have beneficial effects on mental development. The Dana
Foundation studied the impact of listening to music while taking a test and the scores improved when
students were listening to music. While music can help you focus it can also impact and regulate your
mood and the best mood to take a test in is a relaxed mood. The four music types we are doing our
project on are classical, rock, country, and pop. Studies have shown that Baroque music is the best for
stimulating learning, research and work. Baroque music is a type of classical music and is known as
the best music to listen to when learning and working as said before. The most important is the type of
noise and music. We have found that music you enjoy listening to increases focus and music you don t
enjoy listening to impedes focus.
The first type of music that we researched is classical music. We found that people who listen to
classical music have a high self esteem and can focus more when testing at any time. Classical music
is known for helping you calm down and relax your nerves while it also helps you focus. We have two
attention systems that are the complete opposite of each other. One is called the conscious side and it
helps us direct our focus towards things such as tests,

Introduction: The focus of this Investigation Project is Remembering and Forgetting, specifically
Memory. Memory is often defined as the processing, storage and retrieval of information acquired

Portrayal of Women in the Media Essay
Portrayal of Women in the Media Gender is the psychological characteristics and social categories that
are created by human culture. Doing gender is the concept that humans express their gender when they
interact with one another. Messages about how a male or female is supposed to act come from many
different places. Schools, parents, and friends can influence a person. Another major factor that
influences millions of impressionable females and males is television. Not only does the television
teach each sex how to act, it also shows how one sex should expect the other sex to act. In the current

girls are seen playing games like ā€˜Pretty, Pretty, Princess and ā€˜Barbie . Viewers rarely see girls in the

The Effects Of Post Traumatic Stress On Brain Functioning
Hypothesis and Aims
The aim of this study is to assess the effects of post traumatic stress on brain functioning, in particular
executive functioning and information processing of children and adolescents. This study also aims to
evaluate prazosin as a treatment for post traumatic stress disorder in children and adolescents.
Specifically, the study focuses on the treatment of sleep disturbances such as insomnia, nightmares
and altered sleep schedules. The hypotheses of this study is that the subjects with PTSD will perform
weaker in the tasks given compared to healthy subjects, and that prazosin will improve their sleep
cycles and overall conditions.

In normal brain functioning and NE levels, alpha 2 receptors are strongly stimulated and PFC
performance is enhanced, whilst amygdala function is reduced. By blocking alpha 1 receptors or
stimulating alpha 2 receptors, stress symptoms can be relieved. Because of this, alpha 1 receptor
antagonists and alpha 2 receptor stimulants have been explored for the treatment of PTSD. A
successful alpha 1 receptor antagonist that has been used in various studies of PTSD treatment in
adults is prazosin. Several studies have shown that prazosin significantly reduces symptoms of PTSD
in adults, nightmares and sleep disturbance in particular, and improved the overall wellbeing of
patients (5 10).
There have been no trials for the effects of prazosin on children and young adolescents. However there
are a few case reports of the successful treatment of PTSD symptoms on young individuals as an
adjunctive treatment or alone, and with comorbid conditions (11 15). These cases involved a seven
year old child (14), two fifteen year olds (11,15) and three sixteen year olds (12,13,15). These cases all
involved patients with sleep difficulties and insomnia due to nightmares and avoidance behaviours.
Some patients underwent psychotherapy treatments which ultimately failed to alleviate their
symptoms, and so prazosin was prescribed. Others had very severe conditions, some of which
subsided following psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy, but still possessed

Economic Integration Is Defined As An Economic Adjustment
Economic integration is defined as an economic disposition between different divisions that are
associated together through the synchronisation of fiscal and monetary policies as well as the
reduction or elimination of barriers to entry for trading. The sole aims of economic integration are to
succour both consumers and producers, by minimising costs, and also to maximise trade between the
countries which are involved.
In total, there are 8 stages in the economic integration operation, starting from a highly loose alliance
of countries in a preferential trade area, to a completely economically integrated coalition, whereby all

The effects which are most important emerges through a programme of economic integration in which
EU s four freedoms the freedom of movement of goods, services, capital and people are reassured,
known as the Single Market. The impact of EU s membership to the UK is not only felt in the
economic sector, but can also be felt in the areas of its policies too.
First and foremost, the most fundamental economic benefit that the United Kingdom experiences
would be the positive effect of free movement of goods and services across and between European
countries. The free movement of their goods and services should be able to prompt and increase its

The rising need for protection of intellectual property rights and improvement of public health lead the
pharmaceutical industry to establish an agreement in 2001 with the World Trade Organization. In
Sanofi s earliest archived sustainability effort, Environmental Progress Report 2001, it states that
Sanofi has taken initiatives to promote sustainable development as a reaction to the rise of wider and

workplace, industrial hygiene, respecting the environment, training investment, and many more.
Sanofi is shelling out great investments for their sustainability programs. In 2001 alone, Sanofi
allocated 11.2 Million Euros for a program to limit its operations impact on the environment. By 2008,
Sanofi showed efforts of compliance with the United Nation s Agenda 21 Blueprint for sustainability
by establishing the four pillars (i.e. Patient, Ethics, Planet, and People) that serves as the foundation of
their sustainability efforts . In the following year, Sanofi began its transformation to a diversified
global health care company. With this, a Corporate Social Responsibility Direction was created which
changed their sustainability report to an encompassing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) report.

Animal Farm Dishonest Analysis
At the beginning of Animal Farm all of the animals are equal and must follow the same rules together.
As this book goes on the pigs end up separating themselves from the other animals and become more
human like in numerous ways. As the pigs evolve, they start to adopt the same characteristics the
humans have such as being very selfish, dishonest, and having no loyalty. At the beginning of the
story Mr. Jones was very selfish towards the animals. He would work the animals very hard and only
give them enough rations to survive and keep working. Later in the book when Napoleon was in
charge he was very selfish towards the animals in the same way. The lower animals on Animal Farm
did more work and received less food (Orwell 136). This shows that just like in the beginning of the
story, all the animals except the pigs still had to work very hard and receive little food. The pigs got to
live in luxury at the farm house while all the other animals had harsh living conditions in their stalls.

there can be the failure, too. Students might be motivated by each success and failure. Then, they are
going to set their own goals. Even though the goals are not related with physical education, it is
effective. Physical activities are communicative. For instance, soccer, basketball etc. This kind of
physical activities need each participants communication to keep the game easily, and smoothly. This
process might cause strengthened peer relationships. Not only the peer relationships, but also the
leadership, and moral development. The most important one for students would be the function that
physical education can improve self esteem and self confidence and it became an outlet for releasing

Medea Reflection
The common event made me think differently of Medea. This was through having different
actors/actresses reading the same part of the play where Medea speaks to Jason. By having different
actors/actresses reading the same scene from Medea, it allowed me to see what the purpose of the play
was as well as the personal lesson it taught me. The purpose of this play was to see the emotions of
Medea and to validate her reason for murdering her two kids. The personal lesson it taught me was to
stick up for yourself no matter how bad your situation/circumstance is. Also, this presentation allowed
me to also appreciate the character Medea. Initially, I thought Medea was evil, strange, and cold
hearted, but after the common event, I learned that Medea

Visual Media: Is Seeing Really Believing?
Visual media is often used to express an idea or thought because it can do so in a more succinct
manner than an essay or article. Through a drawing, painting, or photograph, the artist can convey his
message in the few moments it takes to look at the artwork or read the caption. Despite this seemingly
simple medium, a visual media image still uses the three persuasive strategies, Logos, Ethos, and
Pathos, just as a written work does, and often there is the application of one or more fallacies.
Breaking Home Ties, a painting by Norman Rockwell, depicts a father and son, one with a dreadfully
sullen expression, and one with a keen look of anticipation, as they wait for the train that will take the
son away to college for the first time. The father can be seen slumped over, clutching two hats, his
weather beaten farm hat and his son s dapper fedora, in his work roughened hands. The son, in a suit,
matching tie and socks, and gleaming shoes, sits erect with a look of delight on his face as he waits for
the new destination in his life, State U, as proclaimed by the pennant on his suitcase. The family dog
seems to express the melancholy emotion that the father seems loathe to, by resting her head in the son
s lap. It is as if she knows she is absorbing the last moments together with her master.
According to Totallyhistory.com, Rockwell s art form was a style of its own and perhaps best
described as portraits of Americana, and

Health Of The American Population And Our Health Care...
Based on some key measures that reports have used to assess the quality of health care, the United
States has taken considerable, yet limited steps towards progress. The United Health Foundation s
2015 America s Health RankingsĀ® Annual Report offers a comprehensive look into the health of the
American population and our health care system. The 2015 Annual Report specifies, Cigarette use
continues to fall, immunization rates continue to rise, and there are long term positive trends in
reducing cardiovascular related and infant deaths (United Health Foundation). While these are
tremendous improvements, public health officials across the nation have used the Annual Report to
raise awareness about crucial issues. A notable matter in question is the quality of health in the United
States: it faces many challenges, one of which is the worrisome increases in the rate of chronic
disease. Often, the root causes of chronic disease are underutilization of basic preventive care, overuse
of antibiotics, and cost implications in our health care system; all indicate the need for reform. When
we compare health quality in the U.S. with other developed countries, it ranks as last, or nearly last, on
almost all indicators of mortality, survival, and life expectancy (United Health Foundation, 2015). The
poor rankings that we have are due in large part to underutilized preventive health services. If these
services are more enforced, they could help avoid or delay the onset of disease,

  • 2. The Pros And Cons Of Public Services Under the NPM umbrella, public sector has also been experiencing a shift to greater competition. The need to remove monopoly of service delivery and create contestability, through privatization, public tendering, and term contracts, justifies the adoption of competition principle (Dunleavy 1994; Hood 1991). Insisting to do bureaucratic provision on public services instead of contracting them out, knowing that private sector can deliver them better, it is believed would only force governments to lose comparative advantages on price, efficiency, and effectiveness (Dunleavy 1994. p.49). This way, governments are able to fulfil their responsibility in providing services and the financing, while simultaneously stimulate greater competition among providers under market dynamics. However, it is hard to instigate public service ethos in private parties. Therefore, the capacity of private entities to act consistently with the public interest is greatly questioned in this scenario. Are concerns such as public health and safety, environment sustainability, and social equity likely to be sacrificed underneath market mechanisms? When power is shared with organizations which have business objectives apart from government s goals, the fundamental issue is how to detect which missions they are carrying out. • 3. Max Weber s Influence On The Areas Of Individual Autonomy... Max Weber was a German sociologist and philosopher who contributed majorly to certain ideologies in society most especially regarding reason/rationality in relation to capitalism and how it has shaped our present society from replying on traditional methods to becoming more modern and advanced but not without its flaws. Weber main point of focus was on the individual intertwined with culture and the notion of the ideal type , he was also concerned about rationalization of the society. Max Weber addressed different themes in his life time but this essay will focus primarily on reason/rationality coupled with capitalism and its underlying effect in the areas of individual autonomy and freedom. According to Max Weber reason is the ability of the mind by a means of logic to comprehend, and achieve knowledge (Weber. 1905), the concept of reason is sometimes viewed as rationality/rationalization because rationality can be viewed as the state of being reasonable, based on facts or reason. Rationality implies the conformity of one s beliefs/actions with one s reasons to believe/act; in modern society reason is self consciously done which in turn has the ability to switch beliefs, religion, and institutions. With this change there is room for freedom/autonomy and individualism, which rationalization depends on. According to Weber rationalization played a key role in societal advancement most especially reliving people from restrictive and irrational social laws (Weber. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Biological Pathways And Signaling Within The Brain One field of study in the realm of biology that still leaves much to be discovered is neuroscience, more specifically, the neurological pathways and signaling within the brain. While there have been many developments and breakthroughs in identifying areas of activity and neural pathways, there are still many obstacles to overcome and discoveries to be made. The authors of the journal High fidelity optical reporting of neuronal electrical activity with an ultrafast fluorescent voltage sensor sought to overcome one such obstacle. They understood the potential for fluorescent proteins to be used for visualizing the firing of action potentials throughout neuronal pathways of the brain, but realized that such proteins were unable to accurately record higher frequency signaling across synapses where there was frequent action potential activity. Within this journal, they describe the methods used to produce a new fluorescent protein, accelerated sensor of action potential 1(ASAP1), and the benefits that it can provide to the field of visualizing the activity of action potentials as they propagate through synapses in the brain. They hypothesized that ASAP1 should be able to give definitive fluorescent readings for the activity of action potentials propagating through the brain, even in areas with high frequency activity that have not been measurable before. In order to create this revolutionary new fluorescent visualization protein, the researchers had to test it in many ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 12. Essay On Mercury Pollution Mercury pollution occurs from industrial sources such as mining, power plants and coal combustion centers. When mercury is released from the sources, it can travel halfway around the world before it ever enters into the waterways and contaminates the fish that we then eat. Through the trade of those fish, people in every continent are at risk for mercury pollution. Newborns are also at risk of mercury pollution due to the consummation of fish by their mothers, thousands of babies are at risk every year of impaired motor skills ( Reduce Mercury Pollution ). In order to reduce the pollutants of mercury we need to implement a policy to clean up sites already contaminated, limit the amounts discharged into the water and provide consumers on tips to reduce their exposure to it. My first step in decreasing the amount of mercury is to focus on the areas that are already contaminated. They would priority since the mercury would have had time to sit and settle and we would want to clean it up before it causes further harm. Some of the sites would be cleaned up under the EPA s superfund policy. One example of a site that is being cleaned up is the Carson River Mercury Site in Nevada. This is the former sites of mills and mining that have contaminated the soil, waterways and fish over a 50 mile stretch. Nevada at one time recommended that limited consumption of fish and duck from the river should be in effect. State and federal actions are being performed in order to excavate and remove the contaminated soils and they were sent to a mineral resource recovery facility. That action has already reduced the amount of exposure during the monitoring period and they plan to add a layer of clean topsoil to reduce the exposure to any mercury soil left behind. They have also worked in sampling 26 different developments for mercury affects and levels. They are working on figuring out the cost and benefit of cleaning up the rivers sediment to try to remove the mercury from the river, wetlands and reservoir. For example, a good friend might put their best friend at the top of their priority list when it comes to spending time with them. A few weeks ago my best friend Makenzie invited me to go spend the day with her and her family at Clarkco State Park where they were camping. Although I had already made plans to go on a date with my boyfriend that day, I decided to cancel the plans with him in favor of spending time with Makenzie. Best day ever in my opinion. On the contrary, a good friend will not go behind their friends back. Even Though two best friends may not agree with each other every once in awhile, they will never talk badly about them or share their friend s secrets. Obviously, the most important defining quality of a good friend is their loyalty. Additionally, a good friend is someone who can laugh with you. I personally am very clumsy, and my best friend definitely knows that. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The settlers in the colonies faced different hardships, but also had some similarities with immigrants in the Antebellum period. The settlers from the Antebellum period came from Ireland and Germany, while the colonists came from England. Despite being in different time periods and involving diverse groups of people, these immigrants had many similarities, and differences. The people in both time periods had reasons for immigrating, faced problems, and had goals they wished to achieve upon their arrival. The Antebellum period took place before the Civil War, and after the Civil War of 1812. Brought on by a need for laborers and immigrants in search of economic opportunity, this time period was significantly shaped by many factors including the rise of abolition and the prominence of slavery. The United States offered more jobs and opportunity to make a living rather than either starving or dealing with political turmoil. Around 7 million people migrated to America from 1820 1870. One third of this new population was Irish and one third was German. Around 1845 in Ireland, a potato famine struck and caused millions of Irish people to starve. Because of this, over 1.25 million Irish moved to the United States to escape it. The Irish immigrants were mostly poor and unskilled, while the immigrants from Germany were skilled laborers and professionals who came from various economic classes. The Germans ... • 26. Isambard Kingdom Brunel s Groundbreaking Bridges 1. Introduction Isambard Kingdom Brunel was unequivocally one of the greatest engineers to have ever lived in this country, or any other. He was recently voted as the second greatest Briton of all time, second only to Winston Churchill, which is testament to the physical legacy he left behind. Additionally, he was represented in the 2012 London Olympic opening ceremony which outlined the industrial revolution and the forging of modern Britain. His influence in almost all branches of engineering is vast, from shipping to the railway. This project highlights Brunel s civil engineering work by examining some of the bridges that he built. Brunel s solutions were groundbreaking and critics often questioned his designs. The Clifton Suspension Bridge had the longest span of any bridge in the world when it was completed; the Maidenhead Bridge was both the largest spanning brick arch bridge and the first to use a flattened arch form; and the Royal Albert Bridge was built using lenticular iron trusses. 2. Historical Review Brunel was the son of French parents: Marc Brunel (a civil engineer) and Sophia Kingdom. He was born in Portsmouth where his father worked as a practising engineer. Brunel was taught by his father from a young age and as a result had a solid grasp of basic engineering principals. He studied in France, attending one of the best secondary schools in Paris, before serving an apprenticeship with a clockmaker. After this he returned to England and assisted his ... • 28. Analysis Of The Poem Native Guard A traumatic event will never define a person s identity, it will never prove character, or show weaknesses. A person is defined by much more than a single life event. Natasha Trethewey uses her confusion and hurt that she experienced as pieces for an artwork that has yet to be finished. By writing Native Guard, Trethewey recreates herself like a disjointed collage. Using gut wrenching poetry as her medium, Trethewey uses her words to represent a self portrait of her struggles. Giving the reader a chance to immerse themselves completely within Native Guard , her audience is a key element throughout the book. You, as the reader, become an empty shell for Trethewey to build herself anew; a skeleton structure for a new identity. Instead of showing herself to the reader entirely, Trethewey uses her own complex emotions to establish intimacy with the audience. You experience her emotions as raw as she writes them. In her poem, After Your Death, Trethewey seems to walk you through her actions, I found it half eaten, the other side / already rotting, or like another I plucked / and split open being taken from the inside, (13). When you look at this at face value it seems meaningless, monotonous, and something that shouldn t be included in a poem about mourning. Nevertheless, Trethewey lets her emotions and thoughts seep through specific words of the poem. • 30. Analysis Of The BookO Pioneers, By Willa Cather A woman running a farm was a taboo topic in the late 19th century. She was met with sexism and resentment from her peers. In O Pioneers!, the narrator, Alexandra Bergson, shares the same perseverance and feminist perspective as the author Willa Cather does; in addition, the novel reflects the hardships and strengths faced by American pioneers in the 1890 s. Cather was inspired by the vast possibility of the land that she grew up in, and incorporated that important aspect of her life into the novel. Professor Amy Ahearn elaborated that Cather put the shaggy grass country at the center of the novel, and allowed the form of the land to provide the structure of the book (Ahearn). Her precious childhood hometown was the basis of the setting of her novel. Alexandra s parents similarly immigrated to Nebraska from Norway, and ran a large and successful farm. As her father was dying, he gave her the responsibility to run the farm in his place, as she was the one best suited for the task, surpassing her brothers. Further, journalist Amy Ahearn describes that Alexandra had lost her gaiety and her femininity as she domesticated and enlarged the property (Ahearn). As she ran the farm, she consequently had various aspects of her persona changed. As a result of her hard work to change and run the farm, Alexandra herself changes from a quiet lady to a prudent tomboy. • 31. Maori Art Essay When looking at Maori art, there is one thing that sticks out amongst everything else with me, and with most likely everyone that sees it for the first time, this is their tattooing skills. They are equipped with many other art skills such as their carvings, weaponry, and townhouses, but the tattoos represent the tribe as a whole and are visible on the people themselves. The art of tattoo was brought to New Zealand by the Polynesians when they migrated to New Zealand. Men of the tribe are more elaborately tattooed than the women. Their entire faces may be covered as opposed to the women who may only have certain parts of their faces covered such as their chins, cheeks, upper lips, and between the eyebrows. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although these tattoos are significant to the Maori, some people may see these tattoos as a way of decorations for barbaric people. In society, we know face paint to symbolize war and hate such as the Indians on television. If one were to see the Maori, they would think that the Maori were either going to war or just returning from a battle. The women receive their tattoos also through achievement and hereditary claim, but to a lesser extent. Examples of these are tattoos on the nose, which represent sevants, or tattoos on the back of the legs that represent that the woman has married outside of her tribe. Genital tattoos protect the woman and her children of future hereditary claim. Meetinghouses were of great importance to all tribes across New Zealand. These houses were the symbol of the past for the tribe. They were the most elaborately decorated houses in the village. If another house were to be more beautiful, it would be an insult to the tribe. Here, the reflections of the tradition, spirit, and history could be seen in the carvings and elaborate designs in and around the house. The area in front of the meetinghouse was most important than even the house itself. Inside, carvings of figures of ancestors and gods told the story of the tribe and it s history. Having listened to many recordings, very few people play it like the arranger himself. Although it is different in the first place because it was originally composed for piano, performers often change the tempo and include, accents and robato to give the piece a very Romantic feel. These same restrictions can be found in another piece called Torre Bermeja by Albeniz as well. There are similar styles in the way Segovia plays both of these pieces. I believe that it is because of Segovia not being able to be creative and open minded to the multiple ways a piece can be played. Some flavor is lost here, as the impression the listener receives from m. 1 15 of Segovia s recording is more of a mysterious impression rather than allegro, which only takes effect on the introduction of the triplet motif. The effects of Segovia s alterations to articulation in the first section become evident in the recording, but are inevitable. • 33. Analysis Of The Article Reinventing The Veil The role of the veil in Persepolis One of the most controversial topics concerning Muslim women s rights is the idea of the veil. It is believed by some Muslims that the veil is an Islamic obligation that all Muslim women must adhere to. But nowadays, the veil can have different meanings that are not necessarily religious. In her article Reinventing the Veil, Leila Ahmed addresses some of the different meanings that the veil can have. Marjane Satrapi explores one of those meanings in her animated autobiography Persepolis (2008). In Persepolis, Marjane tells the story of her rebellion against the Iranian Islamist regime that takes over Iran, oppresses women, and forces them to wear the veil. What was interesting to me was seeing Marjane wear the veil without being oppressed, although she does not believe in it, and is being forced to wear it. In Persepolis, Marjane Satrapi escapes being a subject to the Iranian Islamist ideology by establishing her individual identity through transforming the veil from a means of oppression into a means of feminist rebellion. In an interview conducted by MovieWeb, Marjane notes that the film isn t political, historical or sociological. The film simply holds a humanistic message that says that human beings anywhere is the same, and they have the right to live (Satrapi.) This humanistic message is what we see Marjane fighting for in the film. She is striving to live a normal life, and one of the things that help her do that is the veil. She ... Later in the book when Napoleon was in charge he was very selfish towards the animals in the same way. The lower animals on Animal Farm did more work and received less food (Orwell 136). Through a drawing, painting, or photograph, the artist can convey his message in the few moments it takes to look at the artwork or read the caption. Despite this seemingly simple medium, a visual media image still uses the three persuasive strategies, Logos, Ethos, and Pathos, just as a written work does, and often there is the application of one or more fallacies. Breaking Home Ties, a painting by Norman Rockwell, depicts a father and son, one with a dreadfully sullen expression, and one with a keen look of anticipation, as they wait for the train that will take the son away to college for the first time. Based on some key measures that reports have used to assess the quality of health care, the United States has taken considerable, yet limited steps towards progress. The United Health Foundation s 2015 America s Health RankingsĀ® Annual Report offers a comprehensive look into the health of the American population and our health care system. The 2015 Annual Report specifies, Cigarette use continues to fall, immunization rates continue to rise, and there are long term positive trends in reducing cardiovascular related and infant deaths (United Health Foundation). While these are tremendous improvements, public health officials across the nation have used the Annual Report to raise awareness about crucial issues. A notable matter in question is the quality of health in the United States: it faces many challenges, one of which is the worrisome increases in the rate of chronic disease.
