Advantages And Challenges Of IAM
IAM must not only improve the collaboration within a group or a team, but it must also manage to
enable and improve cross sectorial work. The approaches in both Lean Construction and Lean
Production cannot be directly implemented in IAM. There are some important differences between a
production or construction project and asset management. Assets within a water and wastewater
network are more complex, one does not get to start at a clean state like in the construction of a new
building or the production of a car, but one must take over work that was done decades ago. The lack
of information from that time, as well as the difficulty to get a global overview of the system are
additional challenges that are specific to IAM. However, Lean Construction can be applied in all water
and wastewater projects with the help of tools like BIM. This is already in practice today as BIM has
become a new way of designing. What ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
All work must be highly specified as to content, sequence, timing and outcome. If the work is not
specified in detail, a considerable variation in how the employees do their work will occur. This
variation will translate into poorer quality, lower productivity and higher costs. Most important, it will
hinder learning and improvement in the organization because the variation hides the link between how
the work is done and the results (Spear and Bowen, 1999). Standardizing processes within the utility
will allow all participants to understand what needs to be done. IAM has already touched this by
proposing the PDCA methodology. However, systems are becoming more and more complex, clear
indicators and objectives must be defined and be understandable by everyone (Granger et al., 2010) .
Standardizing routines like CCTV reports, inspections as well as bigger tasks like the development of
a strategic plan will make it possible to improve them and achieve a better quality of asset

How Did Hadrian Influence Greek Architecture
Hadrian ruled as the fourth emperor of Rome ruling from 76 138 AD. Hadrian is most famous for his
building projects that were seen throughout the Roman empire. He also established cities throughout
Egypt, Greece, the Balkan Peninsula and Asia Minor. As Hadrian travelled a lot he often brought in
flavours from outside of Rome such as ideas from Greece and Greek literature. The Arch of Hadrian
was constructed by the people of Athens to honour him as the founder of Athens. Hadrian had a male
lover who drowned in the Nile River and many of his architecture was dedicated to him. In Egypt
Hadrian founded the city of Antinopolis in the memory of his lost lover. Hadrian also rebuilt the fire
destroyed Pantheon as well as Trajan s Forum.

the Romans were great innovators and brought their own style to their architecture. The Romans, with
the development of concrete, began to create more daring building with large pillars supporting domes

often served a political function to demonstrate the great power of Rome. It also was used to
demonstrate the greatness of those specific individuals responsible for each building.
Even though the Romans had Greek influences their architecture was unlike anything that had come
before it. Through the discovery of concrete, arches and vaulting the Roman s architecture differed
from the Egyptians, Greeks and Persians. The Egyptians, Greeks and Persians all had impressive
architecture and were impressive when viewed from the outside. The Romans however began to create
wondrous interiors which reflected the roman identity where what a human holds inside them is the

management, and describes the incentives of its practices by commercial banks, in addition to that, it
explores the methods of practice and how these practices can be defected. The second section explores
the most related prior researches. The third section presents the hypotheses of the current research.
The fourth section describes the followed methodology in the current study. The fifth section presents
the results, while the fifth explores the findings. Literature Review and Prior Researches Many people

Solon Vs Solon
What is the underlying mechanism that causes the downfall of leaders and the collapse of societies? A
superstitious individual could attribute these transitions to the gods. Solon, ancient Athenian poet and
political philosopher, would disagree with this sentiment and argue that it is men themselves who
cause their own destruction. Often, the unwillingness of rulers to hear and understand the potential
dangers of their greed and selfishness starts this process. To ascertain the best possible choice, one
must look to the future. What are the plausible outcomes and pitfalls of one s decisions? A failure to
consider this question and a lack of foresight is where many go wrong. In both Herodotus
representation of Solon and in his own poetry, Solon is a wise man who devotes his entire life to his
objectives and warns foolish leaders of their irresponsibility. He offers a political ideology about the
rise and fall of powerful men and great empires. This can be briefly summarized by Herodotus when
he says human prosperity never abides long in the same place (Herodotus 1.5.3 4). However, the
representations of Solon are in some ways different. For example, the Herodotean version uses
anecdotes to teach moral lessons, while the lyric Solon explicitly lays out his grievances against the
Athenian oligarchy and proposes ways to reform Athens. Solon s reformations brought Athens out of
an age of treachery and lawlessness rife with dishonest, unjust and essentially criminal rulers. He

Gilligan s Island Essay
Gilligan s Island
No inhabitants, a major tourists spot, a clear blue ocean, but no sign of the Professor, the Skipper, or
Mary Ann. Can you guess where this is? You got it! Gilligan s Island located in the beautiful South
Atlantic Ocean.
During Spring Break of 2003, my best friend, Danielle, and I took a flight to Orlando, Florida, a car to
Fort Lauderdale, and a cruise through the Bahamas that had beautiful subtropical weather. For one day
out of four during the cruise, we were able to chose what we wanted to do whether it was snorkeling,
shopping, or taking an off land excursion to Gilligan s Island. Of course, Danielle and I chose sun
tanning on the beautiful, sandy beaches at Gilligan s Island.

Walking underneath the palm trees, Danielle and I found a white, cozy hammock that we could lounge
in for a few minutes. We were lying there and realized that we could see from one edge of the island to
the other edge. Not a very big island. Soon, we had enough of the hammock and we decided to enjoy
the wonderful Bahamas sun and warm, perfect weather that didn t involve rain or snow. We set out
across the rocky sand to find a beach. As we followed the cement sidewalk, we came to a beach with
tiny, tiny white sand granules, and not a rock in sight. We picked a spot in the sand, lathered on the oil,
and baked . After about an hour of the hot, hot, sun, we took a dip in the seventy degree, clear, clean,
blue water. Not a wave in sight and nothing to complain about. As we enjoyed the water that was only
four feet deep all the way to the other side of the one hundred yard bay, we say many seashells
beneath our feet and decided that these would make great souvenirs. We picked up a couple white,
cream, and brown seashells and headed back up the sandy beach to our towels where we were going to
flip and take in some more glorious sunshine. Two hours later, we decided that we were hungry, so we
packed up our beach gear and headed back up the cement sidewalk to the big brown pavilion where
the food was to be served.

Sam R. Watkins Story Essay
Sam R. Watkins was a Confederate soldier from Columbia, Tennessee. At age twenty one, Watkins
joined the First Tennessee Regiment along with one hundred and nineteen other young men and boys.
He was one of only seven men to survive every one of its battles. He writes a memoir twenty years
after being in the war about his experience as a private. Watkins juxtaposes stories of horror and
gruesome death with humorous memories throughout his four years in the war. Though morale
became very low toward the end of the war, Watkins recounts the passion the privates felt for both the

the feet of officer s horses. Civilians that the soldiers encountered were often also starved. In one
memoir, Watkins tells of how a group of privates distract an old lady while they steal her hog, only to
find that she herself is starving. Watkins feels terrible after he learns of her situation, and returns to
pay her with confederate dollars that his father has given him. Hygiene was poor, and the soldiers
would sometimes play gambling games with the lice that could always be found on their body or in
their beds. Toward the end of the war, many soldiers went barefoot in the snow and were driven to
taking the shoes of the corpses on the battlefield. This winter also happened to be one of the coldest in
history, and some men wore little but rags on their backs. There was also a lack of weapons in the
various companies. In one account, Watkins describes a competition of sorts where a particularly fine
rifle was the prize. Men often were without a rifle, and instead yielded rakes and threw rocks during
battles. Casualties were very high, and Watkins depicts a gruesome image of seeing a pile of discarded
limbs at a field hospital. He gives details about young men, even at age 15, dying slow and painful
deaths on the battlefield for their country.

How The Transportation Is Effecting The City
Globally, cities are facing problems of the population is living over a greater distance and travelling
further and more often (). Oil consumption is increasing but the supply is not increasing. Local
governments are facing the issue of how do they plan a city that can accommodate these changes?
Four studies reviewed cities and how the transportation is effecting the city. The case study cities were
Christchurch, New Zealand and Minneapolis, United States of America. This cities are similar because
they both have large populations living in suburbs who have to travel long distances for work, school,
leisure, socialising and more. In both cities, cars are stilled the popular mode of transport. Transport
can have effects on the surrounding land but not all the time. People are traveling to work differently
to previous generations. All of these issues explain the situation of the transport systems in
Christchurch and Minneapolis.
One issues that was raised in the readings is that cars continue to be a popular choice for residents in
both cities. Previous studies have shown that cities with high density living, use less cars because most
people walk or catch a bus due to everything they need being so close to their home. This pattern is
not happening in the case studies. Cars are the preferred mode of transport even if the residents have
access to public transport. In Minneapolis, residents do not tend to use the rail networks. One reason is
because commercial activities tend

Essay about Infection Control
Nosocomial infections refers to infections acquired during hospitalization, with symptoms usually
occurring within forty eight hours after admission. The origin of nosocomial infections can be
attributed to the following: Bacterial flora already present in the patient; Microorganisms from the
environment through transmission from: carriers colonized at admission, admitted to wards without
undergoing surveillance, isolation or eradication of the germ(s); patients who have developed the
infection but who have not been isolated;contact with contaminated objects and surfaces; medical

The increase in infection related health activity is the result of a gradual increase in specific risk
factors such as antibiotic pressure and the greater complexity of patients conditions. Despite their
strong impact, both socially and economically, the surveillance systems and programs currently
deployed for the prevention of nosocomial infections are quite dishomogeneous and, in many
situations, do not exist at all. There are two main discriminating factors in this critical situation. The
first relates to the chronic lack of funds for a serious policy of prevention, particularly in terms of an
effective screening process. The second concerns the lack of accurate knowledge and widespread
awareness on the part of health care operators who are apparently unable to see the problem, in its
complexity, as a factor that impacts on all health care processes, be that at regional or hospital level.
Another crucial element to consider is the emergence of bacterial strains resistant to antibiotics, given
the widespread use of these drugs as a prophylactic or a therapeutic regimen. Main Body i) How
MRSA relates to the disease symptoms Non specific resistance, to an invading organism, or pathogen,
is a defence mechanism the body employs to protect itself from attack (Tortora and Grabowski 1996).

Negative Effects Of Pollution
Pollution is a serious global issue that has occurred for as long as humans have inhabited the planet.
There are several different varieties of pollution, as well as an abundance of materials, both natural
and synthetic, that the earth is contaminated with. Shifrin (2005) states: To date, wastes remain a fact
of life and there are only three places to dispose of wastes air, water, or land. Waste management
always involves tradeoffs (p. 676). Even though Shifrin is correct in his analysis, it does not excuse
the amount of environmental poison that continues to exist today, nor the amount of environmental
problems that it has caused throughout history. The tradeoffs of pollution have devastated entire

more durable and has a higher melting point than its low density counterpart. Both of these types of
polyethylene are used to create many different items of plastic, including pipes, toys, and the one that
consumers use every day in grocery stores: the plastic bag.
Issue of Concern
Plastic bags can be found by the hundreds in stores all across the country and in many parts of the

consumer no longer has need of them, they are cast aside without a second thought. Littering is very
common, and many individuals simply don t care that they aren t being good stewards of the earth;
this in turn can have a disastrous impact on the environment as it can lead to potential cases of large
scale buildup in an emergency situation. In an article on plastic waste in the country of Jordan, M.

Information Processing Models Essay
One of the AASL s standards for 21st century learners is [they will] inquire, think critically, and gain
knowledge and follow an inquiry based process in seeking knowledge in curricular subjects, and make

Three research process models that help students make independent choices, ask questions, find

and extracting relevant information. Synthesis takes into account organizing from multiple sources
and presenting the information. Finally, Evaluation entails judging the product for effectiveness and
judging the process for efficiency. (Wurster, 2011)
Librarians, teachers, and students can all benefit from the Big6โ„ข process as it helps to identify goals,
hunt for, use and collect information and then reflect on that information with the presentation of the
information. Teachers and librarians benefit because they can use it at any grade level, with any
subject, with any state or national standards, and it complements any curriculum. Students benefit
because the Big6โ„ข assures they understand the assignment, complete the project, assignment, or
activity, and discuss the process. In addition, students can know if they missed a step of the process,
self asses their work, recognize reliable information, cite sources, divide an assignment into easily
managed parts, and feel confident in their work. (Wurster, 2011)

organizations value. Additionally, through education, experience, training, and natural predisposition,

Airbags Research Paper
If you are looking for a Houston car crash lawyer, there is an excellent chance that you recently had a
close encounter with an airbag. Airbags are designed to prevent injuries in the event of a collision.
Depending on the vehicle, the airbag may be released from the dashboard, the steering wheel or the
doors of the vehicle. Although these devices are exceptionally simple in design, they still feature some
innovative pieces of technology. In order to be effective, the airbag must open faster than a car can
crash. While you may be hitting another vehicle at 60 mph, your airbag is moving at a speed of 200

Like everything else on earth, airbags and car accidents are subject to the laws of physics. Basically,
something that is heavier or faster will have more kinetic energy. If you crash into something, this
means that a heavier car or faster speed will be throwing more force into the crash. Modern cars are
made to crumple on impact and take some of this force, but vehicle design is not always enough.
While your car structure is crumpling to take on the force of the crash, the people and items in the
vehicle still have kinetic energy as well. This means that your car will lose energy and stop moving,
but your body will still be flying through space. Seatbelts will stop your body from moving, but your
head will keep moving forward. In severe accidents, this can cause your head to slam into the
windshield or steering wheel. To prevent this from happening, airbags are used to slow down the
momentum of your head. As your head hits the airbag, the nylon bag deflates so that your head does
not end up bouncing back into the seat. If you were recently in a car accident and this did not occur,
you should contact a Houston auto wreck attorney to talk about your

The Fundamental Concepts Behind Signal Processing
A signal is a time dependent, numerical representation of events in the physical world. In typical
applications, the signal is in the form of a current or a voltage. For the signal to be useful, it must be
modeled. Signal processing takes time dependent data, and manipulates it to create a mathematical
model useful to practical problem solvers. Many techniques for signal processing exist, including
Fourier Transforms, moving averages, filtering, and spectral analysis. Spectral analysis uses sampled
data to reconstruct a given signal. Though conceptually simple, sampling is typically impractical for
most applications due to the large quantity of data involved in the calculations. However, the

Fourier Series require an infinite number of frequencies, but the sampling frequency is subdivided into
a finite number of frequency ranges to reduce calculations. One cosine and one sine function is needed
to represent the signal for each subdivision of the sampling frequency. If the sampled data is
represented by a vector, it can be written as a linear combination of two vectors, each composed of the
appropriate sinusoidal entries. Let b๎‚˜ m contain the cosine entries at frequency subdivision m, and c๎‚˜
contain the sine entries at m subdivision m. Then, B=[b๎‚˜ ๎‚‹ b๎‚˜] , C=[c๎‚˜ ๎‚‹ c๎‚˜] , D=[B C] , and the

Colonialism And Imperialism In Latin America
Throughout the first seven weeks of class, there were numerous readings on the effects of colonization
and imperialism. All the authors wrote about different points, using terms such as formal and informal
colonies, settler mortality rate, modernization and dependency theory, the scramble for Africa, and
more. They each have different arguments but all accurately mention the strong after effects
colonialism and imperialism have on formerly conquered states. These processes are exploitative,
hinder state growth, and create devastating and long term problems.
Daron Acemoglu, Simon Johnson, and James Robinson explain the reasoning behind the different
types of colonies. They believe that there are two main types of colonies: settler and extractive. ...

Contrasted with formal empires, which have territories directly under control of the colonizer,
informal empires control countries indirectly by using their economies. A notable example of this
would be India during British imperialism. Before India was even a colony, it was controlled through
the British East India Company, which eventually did turn into direct colonization. Informal empires
are generated because many developing countries are forced to rely on a major power in order to be
economically stable. Another author, Walter Rodney, similarly agrees that this system is unfair. His
dependency theory, which counteracts Rostow s modernization theory, states that many struggling
countries will never get to fully develop because rich states will always find a way to get richer,
making poor states poorer. This unjust system is often the lingering effect of imperialism and
colonization because a formerly controlled country still relies on their mother country even after they

The Iran Nuclear Deal Essay
There is no dispute that the Middle East, for the past century, has been a region plagued with tension
and conflict. Differences in religion and ethnicity have been the source for hundreds of thousands of
deaths, and the progression of those issues have shown very little evidence of slowing down as the
bloodshed continues. Many parties on the global scale fear that the combination of evolving
technology and weaponry, and desire to harness nuclear power, is fueling the hatred that some of the
countries in the area have for one another and will eventually lead to an extremely disastrous nuclear
war. As a result, international global organizations, such as the United Nations, have been working to
prevent such an outcome. They are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Once the Pahlavi dynasty was overthrown and the country perceived to be taken over by Islamic
extremists, the West began researching the development process to make sure the wrong weapons
would not fall into the wrong hands, but the capital Tehran encouraged the fact that it was strictly for
peaceful purposes. Lies and deceit possessed the rest of the negotiations as both sides tried to get
straight answers to understand what was actually going on in the nuclear program, but nevertheless
those answers were never found as they were clouded by a long standing hatred between certain
Islamic groups and the Western world(). More recently, ten years ago the International Atomic Energy
Agency sent agents to inspect Iran s nuclear facilities and they found trace amounts of enriched
uranium at a factory in Natanz, which led to a three year halt on Iran s uranium enrichment. After
those three years, the enrichment process resumed and the U.N. Security Council responded in 2006
by placing sanctions upon the country s economy in an effort to curb any further nuclear development.
These sanctions, which include a ban on purchasing Iranian oil, a ban on certain Iranians from
traveling outside of the country, and a ban on deals with financial institutions from the country,
severely crippled Iran s economy forcing their oil revenue to collapse and creating an almost absurd
amount of inflation. Despite this, uranium enrichment has not slowed down for the Iranians as the

The Boston Tea Party Summary
The remarkable book by Benjamin L. Carp, Defiance of the Patriots The Boston Tea party the Making
of America, captivates as it expresses the importance of the Boston Tea Party and explains the history
behind it. His theory evidently states that the Boston Tea Party was the result of decades worth of
American outrage at Britain s overwhelming policies. Carp repeatedly emphasizes his point through
metaphors and diction. His purpose differs from others on the topic, simply by challenging the ideas
that have been engraved into young minds by quick history lessons and basic fundamentals. He strives
to change the idea that the Boston Tea Party was the cause of the American Revolution. Through his
book, he clarifies his belief that the revolution was inevitable and his concept of the fact that all events
building up to the Boston Tea Party were significant to the America we have today. A basic building
block behind much of the American resistance was Britain s East India Company. The East India
Company was a major monopoly for trade in the early 1700 s that the British economy relied on
heavily. It relied so heavily that when a depression fell in 1769, the economy fell into pieces. The EIC
went into severe decline. Luckily, British parliament saved the company by loaning it the money to
repay its debts. In return the company had to sell tea with severe taxes to compensate parliament.
Overall, the company had become a slave, selling tea to try and buy its freedom. The company

The Complex Process Of Digestion Of The Human Body
Most of us think that the process that takes place in our stomach after we eat a meal it s very easy and
simple when the truth is that it s a very complex process. The process of digestion starts even with the
simple thought of food, after that the body starts preparing the stomach for the food that is about to be
eaten. The food goes then through our mouth into our stomach, where is digested and dumped into the
intestines to be thrown away. In order for our stomach to digest the food completely, it has to go
through three different stages and that s where the process of digestion occurs. The first stage it s
called cephalic phase, in this stage or phase, the brain perceives any sight, smell or taste of food,

Summary Of The Scarlet Pimpernel
The hero of the treetop kingdom was on yet another perilous journey. He traveled through the most
treacherous of lands to save the princess of the kingdom, princess Onion, who was taken away by the
evil and monstrous king, lord Gradion. When the hero finally arrived, he and the evil king faced off in
a duel that led to the king s defeat. The hero saves the princess once again, and seeing how brave he
was, she marries him, and they live happily ever after. In countless stories like these, the damsel in
distress is mainly a flat character with no intention other than to have to face a conflict, which most of
the time is getting kidnapped, and to only get saved from, and possibly fall for, the hero. Throughout
history, there has been at least one character that has this trait in books like The Odyssey, and The
Count of Monte Crisco, but one story that spares female characters from this trait is the Scarlet
Pimpernel, written by Baroness Orczy.
The Scarlet Pimpernel, published in 1905, is a tale of an englishman who saves aristocrats from the
violent government that was France. He saves many people: women, men, children, and even elders
from the corrupt ways of the French government through clever, thought out plans, the ability to
exploit any situation to help his own tactics, and multiple disguises to help carry out the plans he
concocted. During the story, it introduces a character with the name of Marguerite Bakely, the wife of
Percy Bakely. Marguerite, as it s

Uncertainty Reduction Theory Paper
Engaging in new Cognitive uncertainty means uncertainty related to beliefs and attitudes of people.
Strangers are not aware of each other s beliefs and attitudes on initial interaction, so uncertainty is
high at this point. Experiences for the first time can be rather daunting. Especially when meeting
someone new and of higher social standing. The degree of separation between the two parties can
leave a sense of unease or uncertainty. Charles Berger and Richard Calabrese developed what came to
be known as Uncertainty Reduction Theory . This Theory can be stated as such, When strangers meet
they focus on their level of uncertainty because it is uncomfortable. People can be uncertain
behaviorally and/or cognitively. Meaning, they may be uncertain ... Show more content on

Uncertainty as an affective condition is characterized by negative feeling of anxiety, frustration,
apprehension, and worry. (Brumfield, 2008). These feelings can easily be generated with someone
new because of the uncertainty about social beliefs, common interests, political values, etc. The
importance of a first impression sets the foundation for entering a new relationship with new co
workers. Due to the important nature of this stage it can be very stressful, not to mention that these
interactions are taking place with numerous people not a singular person. Learning new mannerisms
and behaviors for every individual is the main way to reduce the uncertainty. The more the
communication takes place the more barriers will come down and the quality of the conversations will
increase. During the entry phase mainly demographics are shared, which is just enough information to
get to know the new people in the workplace. Some of the demographics that will be shared are age,
social status, economic status and topics of that nature. Development of those conversations start the
personal phase, when opinions and beliefs begin to surface that indicates the steps into phase two.
People are naturally information seeking, which decreases as uncertainty about the other person
decreases (businesstopia.net, 2018). During this phase the conversations feel less forced and more
fluid, being able to share more personal information without the worry of upsetting the other person.
In a new workplace especially a new one it is important to establish personal relationships with people
that will be working within a proximity every day. Over time the need to share rapid amounts of
information will decrease and instead more qualitive information will be shared. Conversations will be
able to be upheld for longer durations of time and the content

Corporations Should Pursue Goals Creating Profit For...
Whether or not corporations should pursue goals besides creating profit for shareholders has long been
a matter of debate. For my part, the statement that The actions undertaken by a corporation in the
pursuit of shareholder wealth are justified, as long as they are not illegal is valid. The reasons are
presented below.
To begin with, a corporation is created for the purpose of creating wealth for shareholders. In terms of
property rights, shareholders that invested the principal are the joint owner of the tangible assets and
residual revenues of the corporation, with the management serving as the trustee for the property. In
Friedman s (197x) view, since the shareholder is the owner of the business, the corporation has only

Advocates of social welfare argue that firms are obliged to act in a socially responsible manner. Dodd
(xxx?) also argued that businesses must engage in social services, even at the expense of profits, in
order to serve the best interests of employees, creditors, customers, and other stakeholders, as it
appears that there exists a positive relationship between social and financial performance (xxx?), and
socially responsible business practices affect all aspects of business operations and contribute
significantly to corporate productivity and profitability (Website of Business for Social
Responsibility). In other words, a corporation should engage with social interests in order to fulfil its
social responsibility and to maximise long run profits.
In the case that there is no conflict between the search for profits and the general interest of society,
then a corporation can simply pursue both interests at the same time, and certainly the actions
undertaken in the pursuit of shareholder wealth are justified, so long as they are legal. For instance,
Delfglaauw (2000) claimed that owing to the advancement in technology, individuals action and
reactions are increasingly visible and immediate. Companies are also under public scrutiny as never
before. Under such circumstances, interest of shareholders and the society at large are aligned.
Corporations should pursue both shareholder wealth and meet the increasing social expectations, for a
flawed public image of a

No Scientific Evidence Or Expert Witnesses
How or why some scientific evidence or expert witnesses are allowed to be presented in court and
some are not can be rather confusing. However, there is significant reasons on why the decision was
made. The three major sources that currently guide evidence and testimony admissibility: the Frye
Standard, the Rule of 702; and, the Daubert Standard, as well as who can serve as an expert witness in
a court of law.
Daubert refers to the legal precedent set by the United States Supreme Court in 1993 which defined
the criteria for admissibility of expert witness testimony in the Federal Courts. The Daubert ruling
(Daubert v. Merrell Dow Pharmaceuticals, 509 U.S. 579) superseded the long standing Frye standard
(set in 1923) for expert witness testimony (Cornell University, n.d.). The Frye v United States case
states that a court must determine whether or not the method by which that evidence was obtained was
generally accepted by experts in the particular field in which it belongs. In 1923, in Frye v. United
States, the District of Columbia Court rejected the scientific validity of the lie detector (polygraph)
because the technology did not have significant general acceptance at that time (Forensic Science
Simplified, n.d.). The court announced that a novel scientific technique must be sufficiently
established to have gained general acceptance in the particular field in which it belongs . The court
found that the systolic test had not yet gained such standing and scientific

Emergency Fund Essay
How to Build an Emergency Fund
Whether or not you call it an emergency or rainy day fund it is all the same.
Basically, it is a pot of money set aside just in case something happens that is unforeseen i.e., a job
loss or illness.
During the economic crisis this was some people s only and best line of defense against the loss of
their income or investments.
Emergencies are part of life. Being prepared could make all the difference.
What is an emergency fund?
An account that is used to set funds aside that are for worst case scenarios, such as medical illness, job
layoff, or other major expenses.
What is considered an emergency? It depends. An emergency to some may not be considered one to
others but a short list includes the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Worst case is that you will be unable to borrow at all and could fall prey to unscrupulous loan sharks
or be unable to receive help when needed.
Benefits of having emergency savings
You are less likely to make bad financial decisions. I am sure no one wants to let the lack of money
cause them to make bad decisions. No knee jerk reactions required if funds are set in reserve. Read
about finances, save, then invest. When you know better you do better.
Less stress is a huge benefit. High stress can trigger all types of health problems from headaches to
heart disease. An emergency fund can help alleviate stressors as these.
Being able to help others. You can now volunteer, donate, or help family and friends when people are
in need. Helping others makes you feel good too. This is also a stress reliever. How much should you
have in an emergency savings?
I recommend 3 12 months worth of expenses. I have a preference for 8 months because when I lost
my job during the recession it took me that long to land a new job.
You should start with a specific goal in mind such as $500 and continue saving from there. NerdWallet
columnist, Liz Weston says $500 is a good place to start, will get you out of most predicaments, and
usually keep you out of the hole.
If you use direct deposit and automatically transfer $10 per week into a savings account, you can save

The Global Positioning System (Gps)
Introduction:
The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite based navigation system made up of a network of
24 satellites placed into orbit by the U.S. Department of Defense. GPS was originally intended for
military applications, but in the 1980s, the government made the system available for civilian use.
GPS works in any weather conditions, anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day. There are no
subscription fees or setup charges to use GPS.
The GPS is made up of three parts: satellites orbiting the Earth; control and monitoring stations on
Earth; and the GPS receivers owned by users. GPS satellites broadcast signals from space that are
picked up and identified by GPS receivers. Each GPS receiver then provides three dimensional ...

Essentially, the GPS receiver compares the time a signal was transmitted by a satellite with the time it
was received. The time difference tells the GPS receiver how far away the satellite is. Now, with
distance measurements from a few more satellites, the receiver can determine the user s position and
display it on the unit s electronic map. Figure: Working module.
A GPS receiver must be locked on to the signal of at least three satellites to calculate a 2D position
(latitude and longitude) and track movement. With four or more satellites in view, the receiver can
determine the user s 3D position (latitude, longitude and altitude). Once the user s position has been
determined, the GPS unit can calculate other information, such as speed, bearing, track, trip distance,
distance to destination, sunrise and sunset time and more.
When people talk about a GPS, they usually mean a GPS receiver. The Global Positioning System
(GPS) is actually a constellation of 27 Earth orbiting satellites (24 in operation and three extras in case
one fails). The U.S. military developed and implemented this satellite network as a military navigation
system, but soon opened it up to everybody else. Figure: NAVSTAR GPS satellite
Each of these 3,000 to 4,000 pound solar powered satellites circles the globe at about 12,000 miles
(19,300 km), making two complete rotations every day. The orbits are arranged so that at

Invisible Cities By Italo Calvino
Italo Calvino s (1923 1985) novel Invisible Cities consists of a number of dialogues between traveller
Marco Polo and the Tartar Emperor Kublai Khan. Traveller Marco Polo tells Kublai Khan tales of the
numerous cities of his empire, which the Khan himself will never visit. The men play with the notion
that an understanding of the world s cities will inform the emperor on how to govern his realm (Bloom
2001). Each city cannot be compared, as they are all radically different from one another. Calvino
explores the concept of cities as a collective construction, made up of the memories, desires and
experiences of its inhabitants. Cities should not be conceived as a unit but rather as the sum of its
inhabitants multiple points of views which, all combined, create a multi faceted perspective (Calvino
1974). Thus, the city is an aggregation of public and private spaces, from which emerges a shared
identity allowing us to live in it. Themes that run throughout the book are desire, memories and signs,
all of which Calvino uses as headings to classify sections of the book. The strong use of imaginative
writing develops the theme of desire within the book. Cities are made up of desires. Polo misses his
homeland, and tells his stories as though each city is female. Thus, the cities become objects of desire.
The theme of desire is male oriented in which the woman is chased. A concept in which is explored
literally, in the city of Zobiede. In Zobiede the street plan is the

  • 2. Advantages And Challenges Of IAM IAM must not only improve the collaboration within a group or a team, but it must also manage to enable and improve cross sectorial work. The approaches in both Lean Construction and Lean Production cannot be directly implemented in IAM. There are some important differences between a production or construction project and asset management. Assets within a water and wastewater network are more complex, one does not get to start at a clean state like in the construction of a new building or the production of a car, but one must take over work that was done decades ago. The lack of information from that time, as well as the difficulty to get a global overview of the system are additional challenges that are specific to IAM. However, Lean Construction can be applied in all water and wastewater projects with the help of tools like BIM. This is already in practice today as BIM has become a new way of designing. What ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... All work must be highly specified as to content, sequence, timing and outcome. If the work is not specified in detail, a considerable variation in how the employees do their work will occur. This variation will translate into poorer quality, lower productivity and higher costs. Most important, it will hinder learning and improvement in the organization because the variation hides the link between how the work is done and the results (Spear and Bowen, 1999). Standardizing processes within the utility will allow all participants to understand what needs to be done. IAM has already touched this by proposing the PDCA methodology. However, systems are becoming more and more complex, clear indicators and objectives must be defined and be understandable by everyone (Granger et al., 2010) . Standardizing routines like CCTV reports, inspections as well as bigger tasks like the development of a strategic plan will make it possible to improve them and achieve a better quality of asset ... Hadrian is most famous for his building projects that were seen throughout the Roman empire. He also established cities throughout Egypt, Greece, the Balkan Peninsula and Asia Minor. As Hadrian travelled a lot he often brought in flavours from outside of Rome such as ideas from Greece and Greek literature. The Arch of Hadrian was constructed by the people of Athens to honour him as the founder of Athens. Hadrian had a male lover who drowned in the Nile River and many of his architecture was dedicated to him. In Egypt Hadrian founded the city of Antinopolis in the memory of his lost lover. The Romans particularly liked the Corinthian and incorporated in in many of their buildings however the Romans were great innovators and brought their own style to their architecture. The Romans, with the development of concrete, began to create more daring building with large pillars supporting domes and arches. Roman architecture often represented authority, strength and patriarchy. Architecture also often served a political function to demonstrate the great power of Rome. It also was used to demonstrate the greatness of those specific individuals responsible for each building. Even though the Romans had Greek influences their architecture was unlike anything that had come before it. Through the discovery of concrete, arches and vaulting the Roman s architecture differed from the Egyptians, Greeks and Persians. The Egyptians, Greeks and Persians all had impressive architecture and were impressive when viewed from the outside. The Romans however began to create wondrous interiors which reflected the roman identity where what a human holds inside them is the most important and what is on the outside is ... • 6. Solon Vs Solon What is the underlying mechanism that causes the downfall of leaders and the collapse of societies? A superstitious individual could attribute these transitions to the gods. Solon, ancient Athenian poet and political philosopher, would disagree with this sentiment and argue that it is men themselves who cause their own destruction. Often, the unwillingness of rulers to hear and understand the potential dangers of their greed and selfishness starts this process. To ascertain the best possible choice, one must look to the future. What are the plausible outcomes and pitfalls of one s decisions? A failure to consider this question and a lack of foresight is where many go wrong. In both Herodotus representation of Solon and in his own poetry, Solon is a wise man who devotes his entire life to his objectives and warns foolish leaders of their irresponsibility. He offers a political ideology about the rise and fall of powerful men and great empires. This can be briefly summarized by Herodotus when he says human prosperity never abides long in the same place (Herodotus 1.5.3 4). However, the representations of Solon are in some ways different. For example, the Herodotean version uses anecdotes to teach moral lessons, while the lyric Solon explicitly lays out his grievances against the Athenian oligarchy and proposes ways to reform Athens. Solon s reformations brought Athens out of an age of treachery and lawlessness rife with dishonest, unjust and essentially criminal rulers. He ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

You got it! Gilligan s Island located in the beautiful South Atlantic Ocean. During Spring Break of 2003, my best friend, Danielle, and I took a flight to Orlando, Florida, a car to Fort Lauderdale, and a cruise through the Bahamas that had beautiful subtropical weather. For one day out of four during the cruise, we were able to chose what we wanted to do whether it was snorkeling, shopping, or taking an off land excursion to Gilligan s Island. We were lying there and realized that we could see from one edge of the island to the other edge. Not a very big island. Soon, we had enough of the hammock and we decided to enjoy the wonderful Bahamas sun and warm, perfect weather that didn t involve rain or snow. We set out across the rocky sand to find a beach. As we followed the cement sidewalk, we came to a beach with tiny, tiny white sand granules, and not a rock in sight. We picked a spot in the sand, lathered on the oil, and baked . After about an hour of the hot, hot, sun, we took a dip in the seventy degree, clear, clean, blue water. Not a wave in sight and nothing to complain about. As we enjoyed the water that was only four feet deep all the way to the other side of the one hundred yard bay, we say many seashells beneath our feet and decided that these would make great souvenirs. We picked up a couple white, cream, and brown seashells and headed back up the sandy beach to our towels where we were going to flip and take in some more glorious sunshine. Two hours later, we decided that we were hungry, so we packed up our beach gear and headed back up the cement sidewalk to the big brown pavilion where the food was to be served. The only four ... At age twenty one, Watkins joined the First Tennessee Regiment along with one hundred and nineteen other young men and boys. He was one of only seven men to survive every one of its battles. He writes a memoir twenty years after being in the war about his experience as a private. In one memoir, Watkins tells of how a group of privates distract an old lady while they steal her hog, only to find that she herself is starving. Watkins feels terrible after he learns of her situation, and returns to pay her with confederate dollars that his father has given him. Hygiene was poor, and the soldiers would sometimes play gambling games with the lice that could always be found on their body or in their beds. Toward the end of the war, many soldiers went barefoot in the snow and were driven to taking the shoes of the corpses on the battlefield. This winter also happened to be one of the coldest in history, and some men wore little but rags on their backs. There was also a lack of weapons in the various companies. In one account, Watkins describes a competition of sorts where a particularly fine rifle was the prize. Men often were without a rifle, and instead yielded rakes and threw rocks during battles. Casualties were very high, and Watkins depicts a gruesome image of seeing a pile of discarded limbs at a field hospital. • 9. How The Transportation Is Effecting The City Globally, cities are facing problems of the population is living over a greater distance and travelling further and more often (). Oil consumption is increasing but the supply is not increasing. Local governments are facing the issue of how do they plan a city that can accommodate these changes? Four studies reviewed cities and how the transportation is effecting the city. The case study cities were Christchurch, New Zealand and Minneapolis, United States of America. This cities are similar because they both have large populations living in suburbs who have to travel long distances for work, school, leisure, socialising and more. In both cities, cars are stilled the popular mode of transport. Transport can have effects on the surrounding land but not all the time. People are traveling to work differently to previous generations. All of these issues explain the situation of the transport systems in Christchurch and Minneapolis. One issues that was raised in the readings is that cars continue to be a popular choice for residents in both cities. Previous studies have shown that cities with high density living, use less cars because most people walk or catch a bus due to everything they need being so close to their home. This pattern is not happening in the case studies. Cars are the preferred mode of transport even if the residents have access to public transport. In Minneapolis, residents do not tend to use the rail networks. One reason is because commercial activities tend ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The origin of nosocomial infections can be attributed to the following: Bacterial flora already present in the patient; Microorganisms from the environment through transmission from: carriers colonized at admission, admitted to wards without undergoing surveillance, isolation or eradication of the germ(s); patients who have developed the infection but who have not been isolated;contact with contaminated objects and surfaces; medical personnel, usually via their hands; invasive procedures such as the installation or maintenance of a device(1). The increase in infection related health activity is the result of a gradual increase in specific risk factors such as antibiotic pressure and the greater complexity of patients conditions. Despite their strong impact, both socially and economically, the surveillance systems and programs currently deployed for the prevention of nosocomial infections are quite dishomogeneous and, in many situations, do not exist at all. There are two main discriminating factors in this critical situation. The first relates to the chronic lack of funds for a serious policy of prevention, particularly in terms of an effective screening process. The second concerns the lack of accurate knowledge and widespread awareness on the part of health care operators who are apparently unable to see the problem, in its complexity, as a factor that impacts on all health care processes, be that at regional or hospital level. Another crucial element to consider is the emergence of bacterial strains resistant to antibiotics, given the widespread use of these drugs as a prophylactic or a therapeutic regimen. Main Body i) How MRSA relates to the disease symptoms Non specific resistance, to an invading organism, or pathogen, is a defence mechanism the body employs to protect itself from attack (Tortora and Grabowski 1996). There are several different varieties of pollution, as well as an abundance of materials, both natural and synthetic, that the earth is contaminated with. Shifrin (2005) states: To date, wastes remain a fact of life and there are only three places to dispose of wastes air, water, or land. Waste management always involves tradeoffs (p. 676). Both of these types of polyethylene are used to create many different items of plastic, including pipes, toys, and the one that consumers use every day in grocery stores: the plastic bag. Issue of Concern Plastic bags can be found by the hundreds in stores all across the country and in many parts of the world, but what exactly is a plastic bag? According to Rujnic Sokele and Baric (2014): A plastic shopping bag is a polymer carry bag provided or utilised at the retail point of sale for carrying and transporting retail goods and which is only ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT FOR POLLUTION 3 intended for one way use (p. 41). Littering is very common, and many individuals simply don t care that they aren t being good stewards of the earth; this in turn can have a disastrous impact on the environment as it can lead to potential cases of large scale buildup in an emergency situation. (Wurster, 2011) Librarians, teachers, and students can all benefit from the Big6โ„ข process as it helps to identify goals, hunt for, use and collect information and then reflect on that information with the presentation of the information. Teachers and librarians benefit because they can use it at any grade level, with any subject, with any state or national standards, and it complements any curriculum. Students benefit because the Big6โ„ข assures they understand the assignment, complete the project, assignment, or activity, and discuss the process. In addition, students can know if they missed a step of the process, self asses their work, recognize reliable information, cite sources, divide an assignment into easily managed parts, and feel confident in their work. Basically, something that is heavier or faster will have more kinetic energy. If you crash into something, this means that a heavier car or faster speed will be throwing more force into the crash. Modern cars are made to crumple on impact and take some of this force, but vehicle design is not always enough. While your car structure is crumpling to take on the force of the crash, the people and items in the vehicle still have kinetic energy as well. This means that your car will lose energy and stop moving, but your body will still be flying through space. Seatbelts will stop your body from moving, but your head will keep moving forward. In severe accidents, this can cause your head to slam into the windshield or steering wheel. To prevent this from happening, airbags are used to slow down the momentum of your head. In typical applications, the signal is in the form of a current or a voltage. For the signal to be useful, it must be modeled. Signal processing takes time dependent data, and manipulates it to create a mathematical model useful to practical problem solvers. Many techniques for signal processing exist, including Fourier Transforms, moving averages, filtering, and spectral analysis. Spectral analysis uses sampled data to reconstruct a given signal. Though conceptually simple, sampling is typically impractical for most applications due to the large quantity of data involved in the calculations. However, the fundamental concepts behind signal processing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Fourier Series require an infinite number of frequencies, but the sampling frequency is subdivided into a finite number of frequency ranges to reduce calculations. One cosine and one sine function is needed to represent the signal for each subdivision of the sampling frequency. If the sampled data is represented by a vector, it can be written as a linear combination of two vectors, each composed of the appropriate sinusoidal entries. Let b๎‚˜ m contain the cosine entries at frequency subdivision m, and c๎‚˜ contain the sine entries at m subdivision m. Then, B=[b๎‚˜ ๎‚‹ b๎‚˜] , C=[c๎‚˜ ๎‚‹ c๎‚˜] , D=[B C] , and the columns 0m0m of D form a basis for the vector space V. Informal empires are generated because many developing countries are forced to rely on a major power in order to be economically stable. Carp, Defiance of the Patriots The Boston Tea party the Making of America, captivates as it expresses the importance of the Boston Tea Party and explains the history behind it. His theory evidently states that the Boston Tea Party was the result of decades worth of American outrage at Britain s overwhelming policies. Carp repeatedly emphasizes his point through metaphors and diction. His purpose differs from others on the topic, simply by challenging the ideas that have been engraved into young minds by quick history lessons and basic fundamentals. He strives to change the idea that the Boston Tea Party was the cause of the American Revolution. Through his book, he clarifies his belief that the revolution was inevitable and his concept of the fact that all events building up to the Boston Tea Party were significant to the America we have today. Due to the important nature of this stage it can be very stressful, not to mention that these interactions are taking place with numerous people not a singular person. Learning new mannerisms and behaviors for every individual is the main way to reduce the uncertainty. To begin with, a corporation is created for the purpose of creating wealth for shareholders. In terms of property rights, shareholders that invested the principal are the joint owner of the tangible assets and residual revenues of the corporation, with the management serving as the trustee for the property. • 31. The Global Positioning System (Gps) Introduction: The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite based navigation system made up of a network of 24 satellites placed into orbit by the U.S. Department of Defense. GPS was originally intended for military applications, but in the 1980s, the government made the system available for civilian use. GPS works in any weather conditions, anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day. There are no subscription fees or setup charges to use GPS. The GPS is made up of three parts: satellites orbiting the Earth; control and monitoring stations on Earth; and the GPS receivers owned by users. GPS satellites broadcast signals from space that are picked up and identified by GPS receivers. Each GPS receiver then provides three dimensional ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Essentially, the GPS receiver compares the time a signal was transmitted by a satellite with the time it was received. The time difference tells the GPS receiver how far away the satellite is. Now, with distance measurements from a few more satellites, the receiver can determine the user s position and display it on the unit s electronic map. Figure: Working module. A GPS receiver must be locked on to the signal of at least three satellites to calculate a 2D position (latitude and longitude) and track movement. With four or more satellites in view, the receiver can determine the user s 3D position (latitude, longitude and altitude). Once the user s position has been determined, the GPS unit can calculate other information, such as speed, bearing, track, trip distance, distance to destination, sunrise and sunset time and more. When people talk about a GPS, they usually mean a GPS receiver. The Global Positioning System (GPS) is actually a constellation of 27 Earth orbiting satellites (24 in operation and three extras in case one fails). The U.S. military developed and implemented this satellite network as a military navigation system, but soon opened it up to everybody else. Figure: NAVSTAR GPS satellite Each of these 3,000 to 4,000 pound solar powered satellites circles the globe at about 12,000 miles (19,300 km), making two complete rotations every day. The orbits are arranged so that at ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. Invisible Cities By Italo Calvino Italo Calvino s (1923 1985) novel Invisible Cities consists of a number of dialogues between traveller Marco Polo and the Tartar Emperor Kublai Khan. Traveller Marco Polo tells Kublai Khan tales of the numerous cities of his empire, which the Khan himself will never visit. The men play with the notion that an understanding of the world s cities will inform the emperor on how to govern his realm (Bloom 2001). Each city cannot be compared, as they are all radically different from one another. Calvino explores the concept of cities as a collective construction, made up of the memories, desires and experiences of its inhabitants. Cities should not be conceived as a unit but rather as the sum of its inhabitants multiple points of views which, all combined, create a multi faceted perspective (Calvino 1974). Thus, the city is an aggregation of public and private spaces, from which emerges a shared identity allowing us to live in it. Themes that run throughout the book are desire, memories and signs, all of which Calvino uses as headings to classify sections of the book. The strong use of imaginative writing develops the theme of desire within the book. Cities are made up of desires. Polo misses his homeland, and tells his stories as though each city is female. Thus, the cities become objects of desire. The theme of desire is male oriented in which the woman is chased. A concept in which is explored literally, in the city of Zobiede. In Zobiede the street plan is the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
