Tubing Landing nipples in petroleum industry
# A completion component fabricated as a short section of tubular pipe with a machined internal surface that provides a seal area and a locking profile.
# Uses : 1) Plugging the tubing for: pressure testing
2) Installing flow control equipment such as: down chokes, regulators, SSVs, etc.
# Tubing Landing nipples types:
A) Seating nipple
1.Non-selective nipple (No-go landing nipple)
i. Top no go nipple
ii. Bottom no go nipple
2. Selective nipple
B) Hydraulic Landing Nipples
3. Definition
Any short piece of a tubular pipe fitting threaded
on both ends used for making connections
between pipe joints and other tools.
It has an internal bore profile that is configured
and machined to accept a mandrel of matching
size and external profile
Nipples are an integral part
(Accessory) of the completion

4. Uses
used for making connections between pipe joints
and other tools.
to enable pressure testing during installation
to permit the installation of various wire line and
retrievable flow control devices such as plugs,
standing valves, chokes, safety valves and
bottom-hole chokes Where packers are used.
used for checking wire line counter depths by
tagging them with a tool string.

5. Nipple profiles consist of the following:
1) Lock mandrel recess profile
2) Seal bore (below lock profile)
3) No-go shoulder which is optional
but has a minimum through bore
and provides positive positioning
of the lock mandrel.

7. Seating nipple
A completion component fabricated as a short
section of heavy wall tubular with a machined
internal surface that provides a seal area and a
locking profile.
Are landing nipples are included in most
completions at predetermined intervals to enable
the installation of flow-control devices, such as
plugs and chokes.

8. Seating nipple cont.
used to land down hole tools fitted with locking
mechanisms known as profile nipples
In addition to an internal sealing surface,
profile nipples have a profiled locking recess.
There are two basic types of profile nipples
1) No-go or Non-selective nipples
2) selective nipples.
These nipples have a restricted ID, or a no-go
shoulder at the bottom or top of the seal surface,
on which the down hole tool is located.

9. Non-selective or “No-go"
A nipple that incorporates a reduced
diameter internal profile
A nipple that has a polished bore
that is of slightly smaller ID than
the tubing ID.
This polished bore act as a NO-GO
and prevents tools (a tool string)
to be set from passing through
the nipple

10. Non-selective or “No-go" types.
They can be classified into two basic designs:
1. Top No-go :
the No-go shoulder is located above the seal bore.
2. Bottom No-go:
the No-go shoulder is located below the seal bore.

11. Selective landing nipples
In the above two types, the nipple sizes must
progressively diminish with the depth of the
string.
Then it is possible to run only one of each size
and type in the string. With selective nipples as
required can be installed since the locking
mechanism is selective and has to be
specifically actuated by the wire line.

12. Selective landing nipples cont.
12
A nipple that has an internal selection profile that
matches to a set of locating keys on the tool that
was landing( a lock mandrel).
Seven different inside profiles (locating
keys) are available and are indicated by
a number of circles from 1 to 7 engraved
on the outside on the landing nipple
Selectivity is achieved by choosing the
right selection key on the mandrel
corresponding to the inside profile of the landing
nipple where the tool is to fit

13. Selective landing nipples cont.
This means that the key in the tools
fit only in the appropriate profile
the key no.1 fits only in the profile
no.1, etc.
They must be run as part of the
completion string in a sequence
matching the locating keys so that
they will be at the correct depths for
future mandrel placement tool.

14. Used for the installation of retrievable surface
controlled subsurface safety valves (SCSSV) that
are actuated by hydraulic pressure
These nipples may be either selective or no-go.
They have two polished bores with a single port
between the bores for the introduction of hydraulic
fluid under pressure.
These nipples have a locking recess and a hydraulic
communication port located between the two
polished bores.
