How The Apollonian Contrasts With The Dionysian
Nietzsche has a different outlook on the world. In World of Ideas, by Lee A. Jacobus, it says;
Nietzsche s task was to explain the polarities, their form of expression, and their effect. (pg. 643)
What is the they you ask? Well, Jacobus says; The Apollonian contrasts with the Dionysian, the Greek
with the barbarian, the dream with the illusion. (pg. 643) There are many more examples, but I will
spare you the long list. An Apollonian is a relation to the rational, ordered, and self disciplined aspects
of human nature. A Dionysian is a relation to the sensual, spontaneous, and emotional aspects of
human nature. This evaluation will compare how the two interpret today s music, cinematics, and art.
First, Apollonians and Dionysians hear music in different ways. Apollonians are classical in the
department. Not exactly the classical genre of music, just older music. See, they don t like all these

An Apollonian would rather watch a play; a live theatre performance. They find it much more awe
inspiring if they see the performance all in one take. They want to see the actors make the play a
perfection, waiting to see if a mistake is made and if the actors can recover. A Dionysian,on the other
hand, likes movies more. They don t care how many outtakes it had, they want more. The symbolism,
the story, the computer generated images, how a script can be brought to life. They don t care how,
they care how soon. Third, and final, there is a difference in how Apollonians and Dionysians perceive
art. Now, art is hard to understand, and can take many shapes and forms. Apollonians like the simpler
art, the ones that are easy to understand and look at. If you were to give them a single picture that
looked concave and convex at the same time, they wouldn t appreciate that to much. That is more of a
Dionysian outlook. They want the pictures that make your mind think, make you question every

Heroism In The Odyssey
Heroism a Concept
What is a Hero? According to Umberto Eco (an Italian novelist) The real hero is always a hero by
mistake; He dreams of being an honest coward like everybody else. I think this is a magnificent quote.
In some ways I agree with Umberto Eco but in other I don t. I agree with Umberto Eco on that heroes
are always a hero by mistake with a few exceptions. One place where I don t agree with Umberto Eco
is that not every hero has dreams of being an honest coward, well some do but others display courage,
wisdom, intelligence, bravery, and their willpower to succeed. Heroes can come in various different
concepts. It all depend on what appeals to one as a hero, but now let me show you what appeals to be
a hero to me. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Odysseus displays great wisdom. In the Trojan war, (which took place somewhere around the 13th
century B.C.) Odysseus displayed wisdom by tricking the trojans to think that they have won with a
huge victory gift (The Trojan horse) during their feist that contained a lot of soldier in it that surprised
the Trojans at the least expected moment which made odysseus a hero for greatly impacting the
success of the Trojan war. After the war while returning home Odysseus displayed his bravery and
willpower. While Odysseus and his crew were cursed by poseidon that they would never see Ithaca,
(their homeland) like the hero he is, in their desperate times he encouraged his crew to not lose hope
on returning to Ithaca. Another reason that I picked Odysseus is because he does everything it takes in
order to reach her goal. While returning back from the war Odysseus and his crew overcame countless
obstacles and in all of them Odysseus does everything he can to ensure the safety of his crew. If he
hadn t gone to the war he wouldn t be a hero that is what makes him a hero by

The Articles Of Confederation And The Constitution
Constitution and Articles Analysis The Articles of Confederation and The Constitution were both
written I believe to ensue peace in a new nation where great freedoms had just been betrothed upon.
Both written within ten years of each other, the main point it was trying to get across was the idea of
one nation. They were written by the same people who all in all had similar ideas. There are many
differences as well. From the main one being sovereign states, to how many states must approve an
amendment. One reason for the difference is some had other interpretations of certain
wordings.Unfortunately, this is what brought us the Civil War. The southern states felt that their
constitutional rights had been violated when they were told they could not take slaves with them to the
west. They were then told that they could not secede from the rest of the union. And the rest is well,
history. There are many similar things about both of these documents. They both want to secure the
nation as a whole. After being able to escape the British rule, they wanted to come together as one
nation. Both gave power to the government to help regulate the laws of the land. The writers knew
that they would be stronger and harder to over run if the laws were written out on paper. It gave each
state their own rights to run it how they like, but still made sure the government had the final so if it
was written down. With that said, there are many difference in a lot of the articles in both. The

The Expansion Of The Grocery Industry
Executive Summary: Over the years we have seen the expansion of the grocery industry, in many
cases local to global. With population growth around the world, grocers have become creative in their
growth strategies while trying to grow market share and Brand. In the US when you think of grocery
stores many immediately defer to those like Walmart or Target due their size. We believe that it will be
those stores that separate themselves from others by creating a unique experience for the consumer
and employees. Stores that do so should continue to show sustainable growth while being true to their
core values and focusing on their strategies. As we look at the details within the grocery industry, we
are intrigued at what Trader Joe s has ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For more than a decade, Trader Joe s has been well known, not only for their style and unique
products, but by their loyal and trusted employees as well. Trader Joe s compensates their employees
well, with excellent benefits and has remarkably strengthened their competitive position in the
industry. Continuing to capitalize and rely on Joe s passion, by applying his sound cooperative
principles of the past, challenges loom for them due to the fast moving, technology driven customer
base. However, Joe wanted his principles to remain and ensure that any association with Trader Joe s
would remain a valuable experience, not only for their shareholders, but also for their suppliers,
employees and loyal customer following. Trader Joe s success is attributed to their sustained focus on
core business. The rendering of a unique and unequivocal experience, the provision of sound financing
solutions (to include their Aldi acquisition), store operations, new leadership implementation, the
management of their expansion, as well as addressing their need for change at the right time. Trader
Joe s capitalizes on the quality of the people in the stores as a key strategic focus. Our
recommendation would be to continue their strategic focus on growing their market share,
geographical expansion and utilizing marketing integration opportunities via various social media and

Legalization Of Prostitution In The United States
Prostitution, is an old occupation, where women are employed in selling sex for money. Money, can
be a key component and motivator to why women become prostitutes. Most of the prostitutes come
from low income backgrounds. Prostitution is a well paying occupation for women. Prostitution
provides increasing income for all prostitutes varying from one another. Many places in United States,
except Nevada, banned prostitution. In the late 1800s, women solicited sex from men for money to
earn profits, which has proceeded over the years. Lower class prostitutes look to sell sex for money to
supplement their income. Some start at a young age to come up with ways to pay for books and
tuitions, without realizing the consequences or danger involved. Prostitution is illegal and most are not

state the number of prostitutes has been estimated to range from 84,000 to 336,000 (Potterat et al,
1990, p. 227). Some prostitutes work part time, and work other legal occupations. According to Thio,
Taylor, Schwartz, there was a recent study, where women from 18 to 64 were asked if they ever had
sex for money. The results concluded that about 6 percent said yes, then the number translated larger
to at least 4.2 million. Many people believe that prostitution is wicked because it contains sex for
money, and considered a sign of social order. Feminists, believe that prostitution provides a setting in
which prostitution is viewed as being robbed, beaten, or raped. The two different beliefs hold negative
views about prostitution. Regardless, prostitution has a variety of different types including
streetwalkers, child and adolescent prostitutes, house prostitutes, and call

The Berlin Wall
Before the creation of the Berlin Wall, West Berlin presented an escape route for thousands of East
Germans, which worsened conditions in the East and put pressure on the West. When East Germany
lost civilians, its economy and social institutions weakened without skilled workers, causing more
civilians to flee in a vicious cycle. The West was also unprepared for the influx of immigrants, due to
the Western Leaders mistaken beliefs that reunification was imminent and economic fragility. East
Germans who feared further Sovietization and coveted the higher wages and civil rights of the West
fled West in droves; between 1941 and 1961 alone nearly 3.7 million people fled West. The creation of
the Berlin Wall almost completely stopped migration, giving both nations the time they needed to
develop. The Government of East Germany, the East German Democratic Republic or GDR , provided
its citizens with housing, free transport, and excellent public education. However, for many East
Germans these benefits were overshadowed by the methods by which the GDR maintained control
and the lack of economic development. The GDR used an extensive secret police network called the
Stasi to suppress discontent. The Stasi surveyed citizens every move in order to suppress rebellious
sentiments (Cameron). The Soviets had also weakened the German economy by selling German
equipment and created a centralized economy completely controlled by the government (Rosenburg).

The Ethics Of A Systematic Disaster Plan
When a mass casualty has stricken the nation such as the incidents of 9/11, the plane crash of a TWA
800, or the Oklahoma City bombing; each incident involved some level of planning after the incident
took place. The planning process for managing an emergency has to take into considerations certain
factors such as the level of the devastation, what resources are needed, and how to eliminate the
likelihood of the same incident from occurring again. The basis of every decision emergency
managers will need to make revolve around ethical decisions when conducting the planning process.
Ethics is defined as the moral principles that govern a person s or group s behavior (Oxford
Dictionary, n.d.). As it relates to first responders and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Will funding go to areas where there is a least likely chance of restoration or does funding go to those
areas where there is a better chance of rescue? There is an ethical duty owed to citizens during a mass
casualty especially during the decision making process because every life should matter regardless of
the cost on the local, state, or federal level. When addressing concerns for impoverished areas, special
consideration should be a concern for many emergency managers before an incident would to hit the
community (Danz, 2014).
In the realm of emergency management, there are five ethical decision making theories that are used
as a guide when developing an emergency management and preparedness plan. There theories are the
utilitarian approach, rights approach, fairness or justice approach, common good approach, and the
virtue approach. Each theory is designed with a specific end goal in mind while taking into account
the various concerns regarding funding, resources, and the rescue/recovery phases. The utilitarian
approach emphasizes on the ethical actions that provide the most good with the least amount of harm
for those affected during an emergency such as employees, customers, and the community (Velasquez,
Andre, Shanks, Meyer, S.J., 2014).
The rights approach suggests that ethical actions are done so, which best protects and respects the
moral rights of those affected. This theory focuses on the belief that humans have dignity based

Comparison Of The Book And Movie
Imagine you were stuck in a world where everyone is out to get you. Everyone you know is infected
with a rage that makes them target you, and only you. They will go through whatever it takes to rip
you to shreds, even if it kills them. The novel starts off in quite a sickening way, jumping straight into
the plot and describing a boy getting brutally murdered by his mother and sister. They didn t care that
it was his birthday, they only wanted his blood. Through the next few chapters we are greeted by the
three main characters, Daisy, Cal, and Brick. These people have one thing in common, and it s that
everyone is trying to kill them. They band together with other teens to try and figure out why the
world is out to kill them.

Well, I was partly correct. I found the story to be absolutely thrilling in the beginning, with me just
being thrown straight into the action. The vivid descriptions of the zombies were downright chilling. I
am a huge fan of zombie movies, and was pleasantly surprised that these depictions are just as creepy
as in the movies. What interests me is how similar these people are compared to one of my favorite
zombie movie, 28 Days Later. In both the novel and in the movie, the zombie like creatures are
infected with something that gives them an insurmountable rage, making them want to destroy every
person in their path. These zombies are fast and have no thresholds for pain, giving them the ability to
run themselves into the ground in order to capture their prey. The main difference though, is that in

The Effects Of Reading On Reading For Pleasure
Forced/required/assigned reading has a significant effect on all students. Forced reading is reading
assigned by school teachers to students who will eventually be tested over the plot, characters, themes
and/or other details in the book. Many students don t realize that required reading is much different
than reading for pleasure. Testing over assigned reading requires a student to pay attention to several
small details that would otherwise be overlooked if they were reading on their own. Although it is
required reading, many students find ways around it by searching the internet for Sparknotes, Cliff
Notes, plot summaries, character lists, etc. to give them an overview of the book to excel on the tests
they are given. Required reading can have an effect on a person s idea of reading for pleasure for the
rest of their life. So, how does assigned reading affect a student s view on reading for pleasure both
positively and negatively?
Although almost all students despise assigned reading, it can have significant positive outcomes.
There are so many other forms of entertainment that have become more popular in today s world, such
as video games, movies, athletic event and social media. With this in mind, forced reading can be
positive, because most students would never have the motivation to pick up a book, magazine article,
newspaper, etc. on their own time if they did not have assigned reading for school. It exposes some of
these students to reading that would otherwise

The Children s Book Watertower By Gary Crew And...
The children s book Watertower, by Gary Crew and illustrated by Steven Woolman, is simple when
individually read in text and illustration, but when placed together becomes unusually complex. Most
eight to twelve year olds who would read this story could find it amusing or entertaining, but when
read by someone older and wiser, they might apply past experiences to form opinions for each element
in reading the illustrations and text individually, then combined. The reader is able to construct his or
her thoughts by observing the small keys in each photo. Some of these keys are the use of color,
setting, expression and focus in the scenery and objects around.
The visuals in this story take the reader to a farm town close to an old, abandoned water tower. The
two characters mainly focused on throughout the illustration are young boys around the age of ten.
The photos showed the two boys vote to go inside the water tower for a swim when one boys decides
to go and stand on top of the tower, leaving his friend inside the eerie water by himself. When his
friend finally come up out of the water, he runs into town, climbs through a window to get inside a
house. During this time you are able to see the boy left at the tower. He sits beneath a tree waiting and
watching for his friend to return. When the boy finally makes it back to the watertown, the boys
decided to both come into town together. A few of these photos stand out to a reader when shown this

What Did Jay Learn From The Great Gatsby

numerous lessons, mainly Nick Carraway s wealthy mysterious neighbor, Jay Gatsby. Gatsby grew up
a poor man and wanted to do everything he possibly could to change his way of living. He is a
character that experiences a countless number of dilemmas, which changes him on his search for his
true identity.
Throughout the story we learn the truth about the real Jay Gatsby. At the start of the book all he
wanted was Daisy, the love of his life; however he had to leave her behind when he went to fight in
WW1 (Fitzgerald 153). While he was gone her love for him faded and she found and married a man
named Tom, whom which she had a kid with. After the war Gatsby returned back and had only one
thing he wanted to do, get Daisy back. Every single thing that he did, he did with the intentions of
getting Daisy again. He bought a gigantic mansion on the bay, ... so that Daisy would be just across

both men just makes Gatsby strive to win her over even more and he was doing just that. The two
were very flirtatious one night in front of Tom, which infuriated him and resulted in his demand that
the two go home. The two do as they are told and Daisy drives home in Gatsby s car while he was in
the passenger seat. The two were in a hit and run killing a lady on the side of the road. Even though
Gatsby was not the driver it was his car leading people to think that he was the killer. This murder led

Film Analysis of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind Essay
In Michael Gondry s Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004), the connections between people
and memories become the focal point of a very unique romance. Through the use of new technology,
the possibility of erasing memories makes painful relationships disappear like they never happened.
The tale of Joel and Clementine allows the audience to rethink and question the process they undergo
as beneficial or destructive. Though the process might be helpful in eliminating the pain caused from
another person, four key scenes show how the lessons learned through relationship experiences are
important. At the start of the film, Joel Barish (Jim Carey) finds himself waking up in the morning
from what appears to have been a deep sleep. With a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Though Joel is very nervous and unsure about walking out onto the frozen river, Clementine runs and
slides past him. After falling and getting up, she then pressures Joel to step out of his comfort zone and
to walk out onto the ice. At this point, the outing becomes more than just a part of a romantic date, but
also a new experience for Joel. While Joel is normally quiet and to himself about everything, this
outing made him get out of his comfort zone and do something he otherwise wouldn t even think to
do. With this being a new experience for him to loosen up and have some fun, such a lesson could
provide him a change of pace from the dull and boring routine of his normal life. Another scene in the
movie is the fight between Clementine and Joel. Joel is sitting at home worried late one night when
Clementine shows up at three in the morning tipsy. She tells Joel that she wrecked his car, which
upsets Joel. He begins letting his emotions get the best of him and fires off by telling her how she was
being irresponsible and could have seriously injured someone. Responding to the criticism,
Clementine tells Joel he sounds like an old lady. The small argument grows larger as the two begin
throwing low blows targeting each other s insecurities. At this point, Clementine quickly grabs her
things and leaves. Having a dispute with someone is a part of life. Being in a relationship causes

Three Musketeers Movie Analysis
One for all, and all for one! (Herek) The most famous and noticeable line in the Three Musketeers
folklore legacy whether it be from the films to the original book by Alexandre Dumas. Although this
famous line has been used throughout many reworks and adaptations of the three musketeers, many
films have not followed in the footsteps of the original book and have changed things to best appeal to
the audience. Most noticeably we see this in the 1993 Musketeer movie directed by Stephen Herek
that proclaimed that the main character D Artagnan, father was killed to set a tense mood. However,
with that being said, there are also many things that reflect the time in which the book was written and

As previously mentioned, the hierarchy of which the French population was separated from that of
religious figures being the highest to common folk were placed at the rock bottom of the pyramid. In
the film this can be interpreted by the open fields and the villages in which people were trading their
crops for money or buying them among themselves to live off of. France just like any other place
during this time in Europe and also worldwide were mostly agricultural as the first industrial
revolution started in the 1700 s by that of England first. With that being said the implementation of
showing the countryside and the social interactions between D artagnan and the locals was another
way that Stephen Herek subtly shown how France was during this time.
Ironically the whole plot of the Three Musketeers is a socio political statement in itself. If not
understood by reading the book by Alexandre Dumas and watching the films, the main plot is that
Cardinal Richelieu plots against the king of France, Louis XIII. In particular, this film puts it in which
Cardinal Richelieu plots to form an alliance with England as France is about to go to war. For the
Cardinal to even be able to do something

The Relationships Among Academic Attitudes, Psychological...
Article Title: Reynolds, A. L., Weigand, M. J. (2010). The relationships among academic attitudes,
psychological attitudes, and the first semester academic achievement of first year college students.
Journal of Student Affairs Research and Practice, 47(2), 175 195.
Introduction
The study by Reynolds and Weigand was conducted in 2010, which means that all sources used by
researchers should be evaluated from that perspective, counting 5 years from the publication year as
more recent and older sources that have no fundamental value as irrelevant. Reynolds and Weigand
(2010) have utilized 40 sources in their research, with only 8 of them being recent (6 of 2005 year, 1
2006, and 1 2007), and the rest being irrelevant, dating back to 1985. Therefore, the investigators did
not report on the recent and relevant literature, using outdated sources for backing up their findings
and justifying their research. Although the investigators language seems neutral and objective, the
sections reporting about limitations of the study brings all biases and drawbacks to discussion,
revealing sample size, lack of generalizability, and use of first semester GPA for evaluating students
academic achievement are cited as the major limitations.
Hypothesis
The hypothesis of the study is not stated clearly, leaving only research questions to guide the readers
in guessing the purpose of the research and possible assumptions. So, Reynolds and Weigand (2010)
asked, (a) what is the relationship

Northern Baroque Vs Italian Baroque
In this essay, the difference between Northern Baroque and Italian Baroque styles of painting, the
differences between a male and a female interpretation, the narrative differences, and the
psychological dilemmas they present to the viewer will be discussed. In the style of Italian Baroque,
Genteleschi s version of Susanna and the Elders use of color is much more vibrant than Ruben s
interpretation. This can be seen in the bright red cape and blue shirt that the right Elder is wearing, the
dull blue sky, the dark purple and light brown robes the left Elder is wearing and with the contrast of
Susanna s white body against the cold concrete bench upon which she is sitting. The detailed carving

The helplessness felt by Susanna could represent the feelings felt by many of the women at the time,
as they had nowhere near the amount of power that men had. They could only achieve power through
marriage. Even though they had power in marriage, women were still subservient to the husband.
They were seen as child bearers and bread makers. Apart from the love for their husband, little else
granted them power of the likes of their husband, legally or otherwise. Ruben s interpretation could
represent how men were feeling at the time period, like predators of the night. How they prey on the
unsuspecting widows and unwed women throughout the night brings to mind Jack the Ripper, based
on the sinister tone of Ruben s painting. Susanna could represent the sheer terror that is felt by women

African American and Caucasian individuals. Police interrogation can be persuasive in many ways

of police interrogation. The PEACE model technique is preferred more among police and among the

Through his interrogation, Crow showed signs of distress. When Crow would say that he had a feeling
he killed his sister the interrogator went along with what Crow said and tried to get an even greater
confession out of him by being coercive and confrontational. As the interrogation progressed Crow s
level of distress became greater. Crow was going back and forth between whether he murdered his

19th Century American Whisky Essay
Whisky is believed to be first created over 8,000 years ago, but is now synonymously known with
Scottish history. It is also known as one the world s most admired spirits to date. Whisky s distillation
process dates back to Mesopotamia when the Babylonians were initially creating perfumes and
aromas, and travelled vastly throughout the ancient civilizations with new variations and
developments. In the 15th century, the art of distillation spread through the United Kingdom,
especially in Ireland and Scotland in the monasteries. With the dissolve of monasteries by King Henry
VIII of England, forced the monks to not only perfect the art of distillation, but the art of smuggling
due to the punitive taxes imposed on unlicensed breweries. In the United States, whisky was used as a
method of currency during the American Revolution, but later became taxed by government causing
the infamous Whisky Rebellion. During the 19th century was the true rise of whisky worldwide.

Schools Should Not Conduct Random Locker Searches In Schools
On a scale basis, most people actually hate locker searches and think that schools need to terminate
them. Joseph, a friend of a student whose locker got searched said. His friend, Ryan had school locker
searches in his school. They were allowed to have their phones out during lunch, but when the security
pulled him away from his friends at lunch to have a locker search, they confiscated Ryan s iPod 4. He
never saw it again. The security said that they kept it, but it somehow got lost. Students should not
conduct random locker searches because they will lose their privacy, have misplaced focus, and the
search could lead to legal issues. I mean, how many times have people found bad in lockers in the past

Ancient Egyptian civilisation were located along in the tomb of pharaohs and was discovered in 1922

Danger of Deforestation
The Danger of Deforestation(rough draft) By Chenghao Chen

It is obvious the importance of the forest vegetation to everyone in the society. However, people in the
past ages did a kind of thing that they thought was very meaningful cutting down the trees. When they
recall this history, most of them cannot be restrained from their remorse and guilty to it. Trees or forest
are things that not only protect the environment but also help people to live better. Destroy of forest

So there were many people took their tools to cut trees in 1990s in China. It was just like a fashion
trend. They may use wood to produce furniture, houses, boats and they need more space to do farm

is vital to the survey on the change of the forest land. The main reasons for deforestation are from two
aspects, one is the state owned forest area, and the other is collective forest area (John amp;Richard
1988). In fact, the amount of state owned forest area is much larger than collective forest area. The
ecological as well as financial crisis caused by the deforestation has also stayed for quite a long time.
The reasons for ecological and financial crisis in state owned forest area can be analyzed from several
aspects such as, firstly, the excessive growth of the population in state owned forest area, which makes
the overburdened of the enterprises of state owned forest area. There are about 1.3 million work forces
in state owned forest area, which may composed of one third the surplus work force this year.
Secondly, over use of the forest under the administration of state owned forest enterprises. Thirdly, the
administration systems of state owned forest enterprises perform practically no function. There are

Media And Anorexia
Introduction It is apparent that with the increasing popularity of social media today, there has been a
shift in dietary changes within our society. Individuals are subconsciously changing how and what
they eat. The question arises, why are so many young women dissatisfied with their bodies, despite
their size? Although there are several forces believed to play a role in this dissatisfaction such as peer
criticism and parental influences, the thin ideal body is dominating the media (Grabe, Ward, Hyde,
2008). Thinness is largely emphasized and praised for women in magazines, television shows, movies
and commercials (Stice Shaw, 1992). Anorexia Nervosa is an eating disorder that stems from this
ubiquitous obsession to be thin and is often associated with a pathological fear of gaining weight,
distorted self body image and emaciation (The American Heritage® Science Dictionary).
Various studies have demonstrated that when women are shown both photographs or TV commercials
with extremely slender models they indicate an increase in dissatisfaction with their body (Crouch
Degelman, 1998). A study regarding social media specifically, was conducted by researchers at the
University of Haifa on 248 girls ages 12 to 19; they found that the more time girls spent looking at
pictures on Facebook, the more they suffered from eating disorders such as Anorexia, as well as other
conditions including a heightened urge to diet and lose weight (University of Haifa, 2011). Media

All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque Essay
All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque
All Quiet on the Western Front was written in a first person style. The story was told by Paul Baümer,
a nineteen year old student, convinced to enlist with the German army by his schoolmaster, Kantorek.
Along with many of his friends from school, he is trained under Corporal Himmelstoss, a strictly
disciplined commander who dislikes Paul because of his defiance.
When sent to the front, Paul, along with his other friends, made new friendships that would last
throughout time. His newly made friend/commander, was a man named Stanislaus Katczinsky. As a
man of forty years of age he was a wise old man as well as a friend to the young eighteen and nineteen

One day the French came and began shelling the village. While evacuating Paul and his friend Albert
Kropp were injured by gunshot wounds. They were bandaged up and sent on a train back home.
This ride home took a turn. When Kropp got a fever he was scheduled to be dropped off at the next
stop. In order for Paul to stay with his friend, he had to convince the nurse that he also was sick from
infection. After being dropped off they were taken to a Catholic hospital to be treated. After a few
weeks Kropp s leg is overcome with infection and is amputated at the thigh. After a few more weeks
Paul and Kropp parted, Paul going back to the war and Kropp going home.
Returning to the front was hard for Paul. The days were getting cold and one by one he watched his
friends die. The hardest loss was that of Kat. After Kat had been shot, Paul had to carry Kat to the
nearest dressing station a few miles away. Stopping every few minutes to rest, Paul frequently checked
to make sure that Kat, even with his injury, was ok. When at last Paul reached the dressing station the
nurse told him that Kat was dead. When Paul checked again a small shell fragment had just penetrated
that back of Kat s head. He was still even warm. Kat was the last of Paul s friends to die in the war.
Then, in October of 1918, Paul finally fell. The book describes his death as, ...his face had an

The Tax Deduction For Charitable
The federal charitable giving tax deduction was adopted in 1917 with the goal of off setting war time
tax burdens. However, now that the policy has been in effect for about one hundred years, it is
possible to look at weather these benefits and goals have been achieved. Does the tax deduction
actually stimulate charitable contribution and do the drawbacks outweigh the benefits? The purpose of
this paper is to refute the argument that tax breaks increase the incentive for donating and to argue that
eliminating the deduction would actually be more beneficial to the federal budget.
In order to understand why Americans get a tax deduction for charitable giving, it is necessary to look
to World War I. In the interest of funding the war, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The more money a person has or makes, the higher tax bracket a person falls in, the smaller the
individuals tax liability. The problem with this is that the top tax bracket has gone down from 70
percent in 1980 to 35 percent in 2003, so the percentage of contributions should have also declined.
But they did not. The abuse of the federal contribution tax is at an all time high, and evidence from
taxpayer audits proves that donators over exaggerate their actual charitable donations.
Politicians and pundits in opposition to the deduction argue that cutbacks need to be made to the tax
break people get for making donations. The country is in such bad debt that the federal budget just
cannot afford to reward charitable giving particularly when it is mostly the rich who benefit from the
deduction. According to an article in the Wall Street journal, Opponents of cutting back argue that
things aren t that simple. The deduction, they say, is a critical incentive that keeps much needed cash
flowing to charities. And donations have already fallen in recent years at a time when the need for
services is soaring.
The question is of course, why is this so important? The answer is very simple, our economy is not
doing very well right now and it hasn t been doing as well as it should for the last decade. The
evidence is pretty overwhelming on this, looking at the evidence over the past one hundred years it
shows that when tax rates are lover

What Is Chaucer s Use Of Satire In The Canterbury Tales
The Canterbury Tales is a story in which Geoffrey Chaucer began writing in 1836 and never finished.
The author was very sneaky as he mentioned ways to mock the Church. He wasn t fond of how
corrupt the Church and religion in general was becoming in his day an age. All that mattered was
money, not the people. Chaucer utilizes his satirical comments and remarks against the Prioress, the
Monk and the Friar to show that the Church has become detrimental, in lieu of being a place of hope
and charity. The Prioress, who took the vow of poverty and charity seemed to care about her
appearance and valued animals over people. This is what Chaucer found satirical about her role as a

He s materialistic when he s not supposed to be, he flirts with rich women and targets them for their
money, and he knows every single tavern and bar. He certainly knows the community well, but he
doesn t collect donations or money for a charitable reason, but more so for himself. For to a begging
friar, money given/Is sign that any man as been well shriven/For if he gave (he dared to boast of
this)/He took the man s repentance not amiss/For many a man there is so hard of heart/He cannot
weep however pains may smart. (Pg. 8) In this narration of the Friar, it states that he takes money as
repentance for those who believe they ve sinned. He boasts about it too, and doesn t cry for those who
donate. Chaucer displays this to show that the Friar is giving an excuse to take the money, and the
satire shows in the way he is described, as if this is truly what a friar is all about. His tippet was stuck

Chaucer uses this description to show that the Friar was materialistic and a flirt. He isn t supposed to
keep items with him, nor is he supposed to be giving pins to wives of husbands. There s also how he
knows every tavern in town, and that it s better knowing the barmaids and hosts rather than being
acquainted with a sick person who is in

Geoffrey Wright, an El Paso architect, describes Henry Trost s grand design of El Paso High School

was mistaken in this observation, he made another observation that was correct, which is that the

also sports a pseudoperipteral façade that runs around the building and El Paso High does not have
this feature. El Paso High School has a few engaged columns in certain areas around the school
although they are not a highly important feature, I think. El Paso High School also shares a few things

Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass
The tone established in the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass is unusual in that from the
beginning to the end the focus has been shifted. In the beginning of the narrative Douglass seems to
fulfill every stereotypical slavery theme. He is a young black slave who at first cannot read and is very
naïve in understanding his situation. As a child put into slavery Douglass does not have the knowledge

Douglass states before narrating any of the peculiar circumstances, I deem it proper to make known
my intention not to state all the facts connected with the transaction. In doing so Douglass assumed
the narrative would lose the interest of its readers, however the mere thought of a slave man risking
his life for a chance to freedom is able to recapture the interest of any facts left out. In the conclusion
of the narrative Frederick Douglass contemplates escaping, weighing it against the idea of leaving all
of his friends. Douglass says, I had a good number of warm hearted friends in Baltimore, friends that I
loved almost as I did my life, and the thought of being separated from them forever was painful

has gone through since the beginning of the narrative. The language difference from the beginning up

much about anything and spoke like he should have, from a child s view. This includes a child s
inquisitiveness, demonstrated by his speaking of others more than himself. As he grows and matures,
and is even given the gift of an education the language changes dramatically to that of an educated

br One of Hindenburg s first missions was a 3 day trip across Germany dropping pamphlets and
broadcasting Hitler s speeches on its loudspeaker, urging German people to support Hitler. Then, it
embarked to fly around the world.
br
br Only a year after its launch, the Hindenburg was scheduled to fly from Frankfurt, Germany to New
Jersey s Lakehurst Naval Air Station on May 3, 1937. Bad weather prevented the Hindenburg from
landing at Lakehurst, so the captain cruised down the east coast, offering passengers the splendid
view. When the storm cleared out, the Hindenburg tried to land. But suddenly a tongue of flame

Slope Research Paper

The Importance of Slope Slope is one of the most important equations used in day to day life. Every
structure that you own and live in uses slope. The only reason why everything is stable, is because of
construction workers and anyone that builds things uses slope formula. The formula for slope is y2 y1
over x2 x1. Slope is very important in the construction field because it often states the best way to
complete a project. The slope of a road affects water runoff, so engineers and construction workers
must plan accordingly. Slope is also important to people who use wheelchairs and other types of
devices to help others move around. Skiers, snowboarders, and snowmobilers must pay attention ...

Skiers use slope every time they go skiing, as well as snowboarders, and snowmobilers. When you are
snowmobiling, you need to assess your surroundings, and decide whether or not it is safe to go up a
steep slope. If you attempt to go up an extremely steep slope without a snowmobile with high
horsepower, you will most likely roll down the slope and get seriously injured. If you are going down
a slope, you need to be aware of the fact that you could possibly start an avalanche. If an avalanche
occurs there is one maneuver to increase your chance of survival. This maneuver is called a slope cut.
When performing a slope cut, you want to have your speed built up and go in a direction where it is
safe, so that if the slope that you are on fractures, your momentum will carry you off the moving slab
and onto a safe

Analysis Of The Book The Terror Essay
The terror always begins in a holiday
Bare winter with a woody plant, dotted about the town square light up the festive with colors. A trail
of small lanterns glow the church to the middle of town up on the lonely hill inviting all to join the
night mass later that day.
A lonely , lost and forgotten wanders through the crowd. No man pays him any attention or even
notices him. Yet, he d been coming here for years. well too many to remember. He s no longer warmed
by the sweet scents of pine trees drifting over the crowd of carol singers. He always looks among the
crowd because it remind him of the life he once had and could never retrieve.
It would be wise for him to leave now before it s too late but as always something distracts him. With
a sentimental fondness, he watches a young girl with a age of five or six years, as she stares up into
the night sky trying to glimpse Santa s sleigh. Then he smiles broadly at her squeal of joy as the first
flakes of snow begin to tumble to down, dusting everything with a soft magical powder. Her parents
shiver and wrap their scarfs tighter around their faces while clutching song sheets in their gloved
hands, determined not to let the chilly weather deter them from this annual traditional.
In the far corner of the square standing before a flood lit nativity scene stands a man dressed in a
Father Christmas costume. He announces the next carol to be sung and Away in a Manger rises from
the assembled choir. It must be early, the

Key aspects of the Canadian health care system
Canada is known for its universal health care system. Health care services across Canada are financed
by the government and follows the guidelines of the Canada Health Act (1984) Which states: to
protect, promote, and restore the physical and mental well being of residents of Canada and to
facilitate reasonable access to health services without financial or other barriers . The Canada health
act includes medically necessary hospital diagnostic and access to a physician. Further more

(CITE) Despite its success the Canadian health care system has some concerns associated with it and
It is important for policy makers, and the health management sector to address these issues and
provide solutions for them. Health management is a complex social goal, and a major initiative in
Canada, which is heavily relied on the public sector. One of the major issues the health care system is
currently facing the over crowded emergency departments and extremely long waiting times. . In this
paper I will discuss the issue of overcrowded hospitals as a results of the rising population of the
elderly. Many of our hospitals are over crowned, there are long waiting time, and the elderly are not
provided with sufficient care. Overcrowding will place an increasing amount of burden on the hospital
by delaying testing and diagnosis times, creating a shortage of nurses and doctors, and it may also
have a negative impact on the financial state of the hospital.
Why is it an Issue?
According to statistic Canada their will be a dramatic change in the senior population in Canada, this
mean that the entire baby boomer generation will become part of Canada s senior population which is
those aged above 65. Furthermore in 2010 statistics Canada reported that by the year 2036 the seniors
population will increase to about 23 25%. This change in the aging population of Canada has a huge
impact on the health care services. Many seniors require regular access to health care

Essay on Unauthorized Absence
This article is designed to cover every case not elsewhere provided for in which any member of the
armed forces is through the member s own fault not at the place where the member is required to be at
a prescribed time. It is not necessary that the person be absent entirely from military jurisdiction and
control. The first part of this article relating to the appointed place of duty applies whether the place is
appointed as a rendezvous for several or for one only.
The offenses of failure to go to and going from appointed place of duty require proof that the accused
actually knew of the appointed time and place of duty. The offense of absence from unit, organization,

(e) Unauthorized absence with the intent to avoid maneuvers or field exercises (special type of duty
and specific intent). A member of the armed forces turned over to the civilian authorities upon request
is not absent without leave while held by them under that delivery. When a member of the armed
forces, being absent with leave, or absent without leave, is held, tried, and acquitted by civilian
authorities, the member s status as absent with leave, or absent without leave, is not thereby changed,
regardless how long held. The fact that a member of the armed forces is convicted by the civilian
authorities, or adjudicated to be a juvenile offender, or the case is diverted out of the regular criminal
process for a probationary period does not excuse any unauthorized absence, because the member s
inability to return was the result of willful misconduct. If a member is released by the civilian
authorities with out trial, and was on authorized leave at the time of arrest or detention, the member
may be found guilty of unauthorized absence only if it is proved that the member actually committed
the offense for which detained, thus establishing that the absence was the result of the member s own
misconduct.

Text Messaging Is A Problem At School
Since the rise of the internet in the 1990s, and the sending of the first text message in 1992,
technology has rapidly become essential to our lives in the 21st century. Our generation relies on
phones to communicate instead of just talking in person or writing a letter. People are so connected to
the internet that we forget all the little things that matter around us. Some say that it does have an
impact on literacy, and others believe that it does not and that it is simply just another form of the
English language. The biggest problem is that text messaging is a problem at school. Slang is
damaging students writing and teachers are worried that children will bring slang words into the
classroom and their writing. Text messaging has become detrimental to academic literacy. Cellphones
have become one of the necessities in todays modern lifestyle for every teenager and adult. People
depend on cell phones for accomplishing their day to day activities in their professional and personal
lives. Everyday over 5 billion text messages are sent. People are so engaged in sending things to their
friends at a rapid speed. People walk around with their fingers glued to their phones and not caring
about anything else in the world. Phones are causing this fear that text messaging language will soon
replace the standard English language and young people will become unable to use the language
properly. Most Americans (adults and students) cannot go without their cell phones for

Budget and Budgetary Control Practices
CHAPTER I
1.1 INTRODUCTION
Budget and budgetary control practices are undeniably indispensable as organizations routinely go
about their business activities and operations. These organizations are constantly on the alert on how
actual levels of performance agree with planned or budgeted performance. A budget expresses a plan
in monetary terms. It is prepared and approved prior to a particular budgeted period and explicitly may
show the income, expenditure and the capital to be employed by organizations in achieving their goals
and objectives.
Budgeting control practices are then devices that organizations use to regulate their budgets. The
controls are mostly comprehensive systems of budgets that aid management in carrying out its ...

Creator In Frankenstein
What is the relationship and the responsibility between creator and the created? In the novel
Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, this is the question proposed throughout the entirety of the story. In the
story, there are many references and comparisons to God, Adam, and Lucifer. Adam being God s
perfect creation and Lucifer being the exiled devil. The relationship between the creator and the
created should be like that of God and Adam. The creator is responsible for the actions of their
creation because without the creator there would be no creation. The comparisons of Frankenstein and
the Creature to God and Adam in the novel roots deeply into the mind of the reader. Both Victor and

Upon learning to read, the Creature read Paradise lost by John Milton. Paradise Lost, in summary, is
about the fall of Lucifer and the other rebel angels; and their plan to corrupt God s new creation,
mankind ( Paradise Lost Plot Overview). After the Creature read Paradise Lost he states that, [Adam]
had come forth from the hands of God a perfect creature, happy and prosperous, guarded by the
especial care of his Creator; he was allowed to converse with and acquire knowledge from beings of a
superior nature: but I was wretched, helpless, and alone. Many times I considered Satan as the fitter
emblem of my condition; for often, like him, when I viewed the bliss of my protectors, the bitter gall
of envy rose within me (92). Satan is the name given to Lucifer after his exile from Heaven. But the
Creature shares traits with both Satan and Adam. Like Satan, the Creature was exiled by his Creator;
but Satan was exiled because he waged war on God. Satan believed he was of equal or greater strength
than that of his creator (Milton 31). The Creature was exiled by Victor simply due to Victor s own
ignorance as to what he was

William Blake s The Chimney-Sweeper, Holy Thursday...
Compare and Contrast William Blake s The Chimney Sweeper, Holy Thursday (Innocence) and
London
I am going to compare and contrast three of William Blake poems, where he shows his feelings about
the way people treat children: The
Chimney Sweeper, Holy Thursday (Innocence) and London.
The Chimney Sweeper is about a child who sweeps chimneys. William
Blake sets this poem in the winter. The children worked in the cold.
Blake says, A little black thing among the snow, The little black thing, Is the child who is dirty from
cleaning the chimneys who stands out in the snow. He also looks like a black mask on the landscape.
Like a dirty stain. Crying weep, weep in the notes of woe! Blake hears them crying a song. As

They think, they have done me no injury, But they have. The adults have behaved as though nothing
was wrong, and continued to go church, praising god, priest and king. Blake s last line is his comment
on roles of the church and government, who he considers have equally badly, by allowing defenceless
children to do their kind of job and made the children s life a misery. Who have made up a heaven of
our misery (paradox) and yet these adults seem able to continue their lives and forget the dilemma of
the children.
In the poem London William Blake makes a political statement about
London.
I wondered throu each charter d street he is leisurely walks through the streets of London. Charter d is
to be on the map. Blake is making an attack on the establishment, he is blaming the government for
the fact that people living in London at this time have been worn down by the system, making them
weak, burnt out and powerless. Marks of weakness marks of woe
In verse two.

In every infant s cry of fear,
In every voice, in every ban,

There is repetition, shows that they are suffering. Blake is explaining how every body is crying
because of their life style, even though there still working because there are poorly paid and families

Anti-Stalking Case Study
Robert John Bardo became obsessed with the actress Rebecca Schaeffer in the 1980s. He attempted to
visit her on set at Burbank Studios while she was filming twice but was turned away by gate security
each time. After he saw her in Class Struggle in Beverly Hills, a movie in which her character was in
bed with a man, he was disgusted because in his eyes she had become just another Hollywood whore.
He made a deadly plan and set it in motion. He asked his brother to procure him a gun and obtained
her address from the Department of Motor Vehicles. One July morning he knocked on her door with a
copy of Catcher and the Rye. He introduced himself as her biggest fan and asked her to sign the book.

Stalking has been defined by J. Reid Meloy, recognized as the authority on stalking, as [Stalking is] an
abnormal or long term pattern of threat or harassment directed towards a specific individual (Bocij,
2004, p. 6). Pathé and Mullen define stalking as A constellation of behaviors in which one individual
inflicts on another repeated unwanted intrusions and communications (Mullen, Pathé, Purcell, 2000, p.
7). In general stalking can include several components: 1) an undesirable habit or conduct such as
following, spying, or making unwanted phone calls; 2) the target of these attentions, or a reasonable
person, would feel fear or a similar emotion such as distress, annoyance, or torment; and 3) there is a
sincere danger of harm to the target of the attentions (Nobles, Reyns, Fox, Fisher, 2014).
Cyberstalking has even less cohesion in its legal definition. Generally it includes the use of electronic
communication to do any of the following things in two on two or more occasions: communicating
with an individual after being asked to stop; harassing, annoying, or tormenting an individual; making
unwelcome sexual advances towards an individual; and threatening an individual with physical
violence (Reyns, 2012). It has also been defined

Stereotypes Of African American Women Essay
Stereotypes of African American Women
A stereotype is a gross generalization of an entire people. Have you ever heard someone imply that all
police officers love donuts? This is an example of a common stereotype . It does have some comedic
value, but it obviously can t be true. Now consider a more serious stereotype about police officers: that
all caucasian officers are racist . This statement has no comedic value, and illustrates the power of
overgeneralization; it gives a bad reputation to all caucasian officers, and actually has negative
implications for officers of all skin colors. Where do you think the origin of this particular stereotype
is? The answer is other stereotypes. There actually are racist police officers, and stereotypes fuel
racism.
Cycles of gross generalizations create hatred, and promote inequality. For these reasons, they are
important to understand and discuss. For this assignment, I will explore the history and meaning of
three stereotypes of African American women outlined by Melissa Harris Perry in her book Sister
Citizen. I hope to attain a better understanding of the sociological and political forces behind them. I
will then apply what I learn to the film adaptation of The Help by Kathryn Stockett, a novel about
African American housemaids working in Jackson Mississippi during the 1960 s.
The first stereotype which Perry ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

  • 2. How The Apollonian Contrasts With The Dionysian Nietzsche has a different outlook on the world. In World of Ideas, by Lee A. Jacobus, it says; Nietzsche s task was to explain the polarities, their form of expression, and their effect. (pg. 643) What is the they you ask? Well, Jacobus says; The Apollonian contrasts with the Dionysian, the Greek with the barbarian, the dream with the illusion. (pg. 643) There are many more examples, but I will spare you the long list. An Apollonian is a relation to the rational, ordered, and self disciplined aspects of human nature. A Dionysian is a relation to the sensual, spontaneous, and emotional aspects of human nature. This evaluation will compare how the two interpret today s music, cinematics, and art. First, Apollonians and Dionysians hear music in different ways. Apollonians are classical in the department. Not exactly the classical genre of music, just older music. See, they don t like all these new ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... An Apollonian would rather watch a play; a live theatre performance. They find it much more awe inspiring if they see the performance all in one take. They want to see the actors make the play a perfection, waiting to see if a mistake is made and if the actors can recover. A Dionysian,on the other hand, likes movies more. They don t care how many outtakes it had, they want more. The symbolism, the story, the computer generated images, how a script can be brought to life. They don t care how, they care how soon. Third, and final, there is a difference in how Apollonians and Dionysians perceive art. Now, art is hard to understand, and can take many shapes and forms. Apollonians like the simpler art, the ones that are easy to understand and look at. If you were to give them a single picture that looked concave and convex at the same time, they wouldn t appreciate that to much. That is more of a Dionysian outlook. According to Umberto Eco (an Italian novelist) The real hero is always a hero by mistake; He dreams of being an honest coward like everybody else. I think this is a magnificent quote. In some ways I agree with Umberto Eco but in other I don t. I agree with Umberto Eco on that heroes are always a hero by mistake with a few exceptions. One place where I don t agree with Umberto Eco is that not every hero has dreams of being an honest coward, well some do but others display courage, wisdom, intelligence, bravery, and their willpower to succeed. Heroes can come in various different concepts. It all depend on what appeals to one as a hero, but now let me show you what appeals to be a hero to me. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Odysseus displays great wisdom. In the Trojan war, (which took place somewhere around the 13th century B.C.) Odysseus displayed wisdom by tricking the trojans to think that they have won with a huge victory gift (The Trojan horse) during their feist that contained a lot of soldier in it that surprised the Trojans at the least expected moment which made odysseus a hero for greatly impacting the success of the Trojan war. After the war while returning home Odysseus displayed his bravery and willpower. While Odysseus and his crew were cursed by poseidon that they would never see Ithaca, (their homeland) like the hero he is, in their desperate times he encouraged his crew to not lose hope on returning to Ithaca. Another reason that I picked Odysseus is because he does everything it takes in order to reach her goal. The Articles Of Confederation And The Constitution Constitution and Articles Analysis The Articles of Confederation and The Constitution were both written I believe to ensue peace in a new nation where great freedoms had just been betrothed upon. Both written within ten years of each other, the main point it was trying to get across was the idea of one nation. They were written by the same people who all in all had similar ideas. There are many differences as well. From the main one being sovereign states, to how many states must approve an amendment. One reason for the difference is some had other interpretations of certain wordings.Unfortunately, this is what brought us the Civil War. The southern states felt that their constitutional rights had been violated when they were told they could not take slaves with them to the west. They were then told that they could not secede from the rest of the union. And the rest is well, history. There are many similar things about both of these documents. They both want to secure the nation as a whole. After being able to escape the British rule, they wanted to come together as one nation. Both gave power to the government to help regulate the laws of the land. The writers knew that they would be stronger and harder to over run if the laws were written out on paper. It gave each state their own rights to run it how they like, but still made sure the government had the final so if it was written down. Prostitution provides increasing income for all prostitutes varying from one another. Many places in United States, except Nevada, banned prostitution. • 7. The Berlin Wall Before the creation of the Berlin Wall, West Berlin presented an escape route for thousands of East Germans, which worsened conditions in the East and put pressure on the West. When East Germany lost civilians, its economy and social institutions weakened without skilled workers, causing more civilians to flee in a vicious cycle. The West was also unprepared for the influx of immigrants, due to the Western Leaders mistaken beliefs that reunification was imminent and economic fragility. East Germans who feared further Sovietization and coveted the higher wages and civil rights of the West fled West in droves; between 1941 and 1961 alone nearly 3.7 million people fled West. The creation of the Berlin Wall almost completely stopped migration, giving both nations the time they needed to develop. The Government of East Germany, the East German Democratic Republic or GDR , provided its citizens with housing, free transport, and excellent public education. However, for many East Germans these benefits were overshadowed by the methods by which the GDR maintained control and the lack of economic development. The GDR used an extensive secret police network called the Stasi to suppress discontent. The Stasi surveyed citizens every move in order to suppress rebellious sentiments (Cameron). The Soviets had also weakened the German economy by selling German equipment and created a centralized economy completely controlled by the government (Rosenburg). On the other hand, West ... Will funding go to areas where there is a least likely chance of restoration or does funding go to those areas where there is a better chance of rescue? There is an ethical duty owed to citizens during a mass casualty especially during the decision making process because every life should matter regardless of the cost on the local, state, or federal level. When addressing concerns for impoverished areas, special consideration should be a concern for many emergency managers before an incident would to hit the community (Danz, 2014). In the realm of emergency management, there are five ethical decision making theories that are used as a guide when developing an emergency management and preparedness plan. There theories are the utilitarian approach, rights approach, fairness or justice approach, common good approach, and the virtue approach. Each theory is designed with a specific end goal in mind while taking into account the various concerns regarding funding, resources, and the rescue/recovery phases. The utilitarian approach emphasizes on the ethical actions that provide the most good with the least amount of harm for those affected during an emergency such as employees, customers, and the community (Velasquez, Andre, Shanks, Meyer, S.J., 2014). The rights approach suggests that ethical actions are done so, which best protects and respects the moral rights of those affected. • 10. The Effects Of Reading On Reading For Pleasure Forced/required/assigned reading has a significant effect on all students. Forced reading is reading assigned by school teachers to students who will eventually be tested over the plot, characters, themes and/or other details in the book. Many students don t realize that required reading is much different than reading for pleasure. Testing over assigned reading requires a student to pay attention to several small details that would otherwise be overlooked if they were reading on their own. Although it is required reading, many students find ways around it by searching the internet for Sparknotes, Cliff Notes, plot summaries, character lists, etc. to give them an overview of the book to excel on the tests they are given. Required reading can have an effect on a person s idea of reading for pleasure for the rest of their life. So, how does assigned reading affect a student s view on reading for pleasure both positively and negatively? Although almost all students despise assigned reading, it can have significant positive outcomes. There are so many other forms of entertainment that have become more popular in today s world, such as video games, movies, athletic event and social media. With this in mind, forced reading can be positive, because most students would never have the motivation to pick up a book, magazine article, newspaper, etc. on their own time if they did not have assigned reading for school. Most eight to twelve year olds who would read this story could find it amusing or entertaining, but when read by someone older and wiser, they might apply past experiences to form opinions for each element in reading the illustrations and text individually, then combined. The reader is able to construct his or her thoughts by observing the small keys in each photo. Some of these keys are the use of color, setting, expression and focus in the scenery and objects around. The tale of Joel and Clementine allows the audience to rethink and question the process they undergo as beneficial or destructive. Introduction The study by Reynolds and Weigand was conducted in 2010, which means that all sources used by researchers should be evaluated from that perspective, counting 5 years from the publication year as more recent and older sources that have no fundamental value as irrelevant. Reynolds and Weigand (2010) have utilized 40 sources in their research, with only 8 of them being recent (6 of 2005 year, 1 2006, and 1 2007), and the rest being irrelevant, dating back to 1985. Therefore, the investigators did not report on the recent and relevant literature, using outdated sources for backing up their findings and justifying their research. Although the investigators language seems neutral and objective, the sections reporting about limitations of the study brings all biases and drawbacks to discussion, revealing sample size, lack of generalizability, and use of first semester GPA for evaluating students academic achievement are cited as the major limitations. • 30. Media And Anorexia Introduction It is apparent that with the increasing popularity of social media today, there has been a shift in dietary changes within our society. Individuals are subconsciously changing how and what they eat. The question arises, why are so many young women dissatisfied with their bodies, despite their size? Although there are several forces believed to play a role in this dissatisfaction such as peer criticism and parental influences, the thin ideal body is dominating the media (Grabe, Ward, Hyde, 2008). Thinness is largely emphasized and praised for women in magazines, television shows, movies and commercials (Stice Shaw, 1992). Anorexia Nervosa is an eating disorder that stems from this ubiquitous obsession to be thin and is often associated with a pathological fear of gaining weight, distorted self body image and emaciation (The American Heritage® Science Dictionary). Various studies have demonstrated that when women are shown both photographs or TV commercials with extremely slender models they indicate an increase in dissatisfaction with their body (Crouch Degelman, 1998). A study regarding social media specifically, was conducted by researchers at the University of Haifa on 248 girls ages 12 to 19; they found that the more time girls spent looking at pictures on Facebook, the more they suffered from eating disorders such as Anorexia, as well as other conditions including a heightened urge to diet and lose weight (University of Haifa, 2011). The purpose of this paper is to refute the argument that tax breaks increase the incentive for donating and to argue that eliminating the deduction would actually be more beneficial to the federal budget. The abuse of the federal contribution tax is at an all time high, and evidence from taxpayer audits proves that donators over exaggerate their actual charitable donations. Politicians and pundits in opposition to the deduction argue that cutbacks need to be made to the tax break people get for making donations. Health management is a complex social goal, and a major initiative in Canada, which is heavily relied on the public sector. One of the major issues the health care system is currently facing the over crowded emergency departments and extremely long waiting times. . In this paper I will discuss the issue of overcrowded hospitals as a results of the rising population of the elderly. Many of our hospitals are over crowned, there are long waiting time, and the elderly are not provided with sufficient care. Overcrowding will place an increasing amount of burden on the hospital by delaying testing and diagnosis times, creating a shortage of nurses and doctors, and it may also have a negative impact on the financial state of the hospital. Why is it an Issue? According to statistic Canada their will be a dramatic change in the senior population in Canada, this mean that the entire baby boomer generation will become part of Canada s senior population which is those aged above 65. The first part of this article relating to the appointed place of duty applies whether the place is appointed as a rendezvous for several or for one only. (e) Unauthorized absence with the intent to avoid maneuvers or field exercises (special type of duty and specific intent). A member of the armed forces turned over to the civilian authorities upon request is not absent without leave while held by them under that delivery. When a member of the armed forces, being absent with leave, or absent without leave, is held, tried, and acquitted by civilian authorities, the member s status as absent with leave, or absent without leave, is not thereby changed, regardless how long held. The fact that a member of the armed forces is convicted by the civilian authorities, or adjudicated to be a juvenile offender, or the case is diverted out of the regular criminal process for a probationary period does not excuse any unauthorized absence, because the member s inability to return was the result of willful misconduct. If a member is released by the civilian authorities with out trial, and was on authorized leave at the time of arrest or detention, the member may be found guilty of unauthorized absence only if it is proved that the member actually committed the offense for which detained, thus establishing that the absence was the result of the member s own misconduct. Our generation relies on phones to communicate instead of just talking in person or writing a letter. In the novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, this is the question proposed throughout the entirety of the story. In the story, there are many references and comparisons to God, Adam, and Lucifer. Many times I considered Satan as the fitter emblem of my condition; for often, like him, when I viewed the bliss of my protectors, the bitter gall of envy rose within me (92). Satan is the name given to Lucifer after his exile from Heaven. But the Creature shares traits with both Satan and Adam. The Chimney Sweeper is about a child who sweeps chimneys. William Blake sets this poem in the winter. The children worked in the cold. Blake says, A little black thing among the snow, The little black thing, Is the child who is dirty from cleaning the chimneys who stands out in the snow. Reid Meloy, recognized as the authority on stalking, as [Stalking is] an abnormal or long term pattern of threat or harassment directed towards a specific individual (Bocij, 2004, p. 6). Pathé and Mullen define stalking as A constellation of behaviors in which one individual inflicts on another repeated unwanted intrusions and communications (Mullen, Pathé, Purcell, 2000, p. 7). In general stalking can include several components: 1) an undesirable habit or conduct such as following, spying, or making unwanted phone calls; 2) the target of these attentions, or a reasonable person, would feel fear or a similar emotion such as distress, annoyance, or torment; and 3) there is a sincere danger of harm to the target of the attentions (Nobles, Reyns, Fox, Fisher, 2014). Cyberstalking has even less cohesion in its legal definition. Generally it includes the use of electronic communication to do any of the following things in two on two or more occasions: communicating with an individual after being asked to stop; harassing, annoying, or tormenting an individual; making unwelcome sexual advances towards an individual; and threatening an individual with physical violence (Reyns, 2012). • 50. Stereotypes Of African American Women Essay Stereotypes of African American Women A stereotype is a gross generalization of an entire people. Have you ever heard someone imply that all police officers love donuts? This is an example of a common stereotype . It does have some comedic value, but it obviously can t be true. Now consider a more serious stereotype about police officers: that all caucasian officers are racist . This statement has no comedic value, and illustrates the power of overgeneralization; it gives a bad reputation to all caucasian officers, and actually has negative implications for officers of all skin colors. Where do you think the origin of this particular stereotype is? The answer is other stereotypes. There actually are racist police officers, and stereotypes fuel racism. Cycles of gross generalizations create hatred, and promote inequality. For these reasons, they are important to understand and discuss. For this assignment, I will explore the history and meaning of three stereotypes of African American women outlined by Melissa Harris Perry in her book Sister Citizen. I hope to attain a better understanding of the sociological and political forces behind them.
