Plants have specialized transport systems to move water, minerals, and food throughout the plant. Xylem tissue transports water and minerals absorbed by the roots upward through the stem and to the leaves. Phloem tissue transports food in the form of sugars made through photosynthesis in the leaves to all parts of the plant where it is needed. Water is transported against gravity through the xylem by root pressure in some plants and transpiration pull in tall trees. Phloem transports food through an active process using energy from ATP to power movement of sugars to areas of growth and storage.
