8. TRAINING OF SECONDARY SCHOOL TEACHERS
Introduction:
To understand Teacher Education in Pakistan it is necessary to
look at many facets which has a part in its development.
The first facet is the values which are fundamental to the
Muslim society.
The second facet of education in Pakistan is the creation
and development of educational institutions perpetuating the
values of the Muslim society. During the Pre-British period, the
character and objectives of educational institution fluctuated
and remained uncertain.

9. TRAINING OF SECONDARY SCHOOL TEACHERS
Introduction (continue)
The third facet is the development and expansion of the
curriculum in Muslim educational institutions. In the Maktab
(school), the curriculum included those portions of the Quran
which every Muslim was expected to know by heart in order to
perform religious functions.
The fourth facet is developing the role and status of the
teacher in the Muslim society. During the Pre-British period
most teachers were self-trained and self-appointed. Teaching
was considered a position which did not require renumeration. 9

Introduction (continue)
Therefore, the system of teacher education did not exist
and need of teacher training was not felt.
Normal schools and training colleges were established. It
was expected that the status and qualifications of teachers
would be improved.
The fifth facet of education to be viewed is the evolution
of the Methods of instruction within the Muslim society. Akbar
introduced a teaching reform which permitted students to learn
things in months that previously took years. Aurangzeb was
also interested in the improvement of teaching methods. 10

Reorganization of Teacher Education:
The first serious effort to rationalize the education
system was made by the commission on national education
system in 1959 “no system of education is better than its
teachers who serve it”. The Educational Philosophy of Pakistan
with respect to teacher education was recommended in
Commission’s report.
Soon upon Independence one of the country’s priorities
was to develop a system of teacher training. Pakistan
educational Conference in 1947 recommend to take steps for
proper training of teachers and award of an adequate salary
scale. As a result, the following teacher Training programs for
secondary school teachers emerged.
