SECONDARY LEVEL
Evaluation
It is this systematic process of collecting, analyzing and
interpreting information to determine the extent to which
pupils are achieving instructional objectives.
➢ Answers the question “how well or how good”.
➢ It covers all aspects that is evaluation of a program,
system, curriculum, instructional strategies, teachers’ and
students’ performance. 3

Evaluation (continued)
➢ It covers both qualitative and quantitative description. E.g
performed excellently, for example obtained 80% marks etc.
it requires a number of techniques for measuring pupils
achievement.
➢ Examinations are an integral part of the entire system of
education. Good examination system motivates pupils,
helps them know their strengths and weaknesses and
provide opportunities to the teachers to try new methods to
improve teaching learning situation .

➢ It can be ascertaining whether we are meeting the targets.
And if not, why not? Should we do more or change the
pattern Etc. program management cycle consists of
planning, implementation and evaluation.

Evaluation answers three basic questions which should be asked at all
levels - project, sector, country program.
1. Effectiveness .
Are the targets being achieved ?
Reasons for success or failure.

2. Significance : Will the achievement of the targets
contributes to economic development?
3. Efficiency: Do the benefits justify the cost? or their more
efficient means of achieving the same targets?
The main purpose of evaluation is to assist planners and
managers in making decisions about programs and projects. 7

Formative And Summative Evaluations
In contrast to the summative evolution , the formative
evaluation gives additional guidance regarding effectiveness,
success or failure of the program. Formative evaluation is
related to sub objectives and suggests actions to change the
program.
