Shah V Hsbc
1. Review the decision in the case of Shah v. HSBC (2012) and evaluate the implications of the
decision for regulated financial services firms. In particular:
* What are the key issues in the case? * Outline the decision of the court * Evaluate what practical
guidelines can be taken from the case by regulated financial services firms
Under the proceeds of crimes act 2002 (POCA) all UK financial institutions and other regulated firms
not only have to report suspicions of money laundering but they must also seek consent from the
Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) to carry out any transactions which they suspect are related
to the proceeds of the crime. SOCA have a maximum of 7 working days with which to respond to any

The Court also stated that a claimant would have to demonstrate the bank had acted in bad faith before
civil liability would be entertained.
In its decision the Court of appeal did make reference to the dual pull on Banks in having to comply
with the heavy demands of a regulator whilst mitigating civil actions from potentially disgruntled
customers. It also made reference to a previous court case (De Silva v NatWest Bank 2006) where the
court made specific reference to the meaning of the word suspect . Here, in relations to the claim by
Mr Shah that the reason for the suspicion itself was irrational, negligently self induced and mistaken,
the court confirmed that HSBC merely had to think that there was a possibility, which was more than
fanciful, that the relevant facts exist when completing its SAR. On a wider note the Court also deemed
that in the future having a suspicion may constitute a good defence for Banks.
The subject of tipping off can be one of the most ambiguous subjects within financial organisations.
There are clear laws that have financial and punitive repercussions for those who recklessly or
mistakenly divulge the suspicions of the firm they are working on behalf of. The court here ruled that
the use of the legislation surrounding tipping off cannot be endlessly relied on when declining the

The Story of J.D. Salinger
The Story of J. D. Salinger J. D. Salinger became one of the most popular and known American
authors in America today. Up to this day students from all over the country have read and purchased
the novel The Catcher in the Rye which was a novel that was not so long ago controversial due to
vulgar language, sexual references, and unacceptable behavior; parents were concerned that J. D.
Salinger s novel was going to influence their children. Salinger was one of many authors that stood
out more from a group of authors that wrote simply about society. Salinger on the other hand criticised
the society by using the word phony most of the time. The word phony meant fake, false, and
fraudulent and by the 1950 s the word became used more and more frequently. Some of Salinger s
famous pieces of work like Nine Stories, Franny and Zooey, The Catcher in the Rye , and Raise High
the Roof Beam, Carpenters and Seymour: An Introduction presented themes such as love, war, death,
and the reminiscing of something. The themes widely connected to J. D. Salinger by reason of his
personal experiences and character traits . The success of J. D. Salinger was reached by personally
experiencing the drafting to war and actively writing about his surroundings.
Jerome David Salinger, the talented author born in New York had a decent stable life growing up with
both of his parents and sister. Jerome David Salinger lived comfortable throughout his childhood.

Lost Girl Analysis
Lost Girl was performed at the Oscar G. Brockett Theatre in the F. Loren Winship Building by Texas
Theatre and Dance. Written by Kimberly Belflower, the play engaged the audience through its use of
projection designs, surprise effects, and sedentary set designs and was well received by adults and
students alike. Through these factors, the production was able to relay the message of finding oneself
to the audience, and encourage those who are lost to follow Wendy Darling s path to acceptance.
Primarily, Lost Girl utilizes digitally projected shadows in the play to offer not only a background for
the plot, but also a connection to the movie Peter Pan. As the public is more acquainted with Disney s
version of the animated film, the projection ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When the narrators stated Wendy wrote letters to Peter , instead of acting out the phrase, a platform
opened above the stage and poured out letters that Wendy wrote. When the sheets of paper cascaded
down, some people let out a gasp of surprise. A few letters even drifted to the front row of seats, and
some were picked up by the audience. In effect, this action allowed the audience to have a three
dimensional interaction with the play. Previously, a performance usually only integrates the senses of
sight and sound, but in this instance people were able to reach out and touch the flying papers. The
surprise effect allows Lost Girl to surpass the traditional theatre space, and to allow the audience a
deeper immersion into the play. From the engagement, the crumpled up papers not only symbolize
Wendy s frustrated attempts in communicating with Peter, but also her incompetence in forgetting the
past. Like a sheet of paper, Wendy was able to momentarily fly, but once she reached the ground, she
was just like any other girl in the world. Through this effect, the play s message is relayed through
surprises, and the public experiences the theme on a deeper level as they not only can see or hear
emotions, but can also physically feel

Negative Effects Of Technology On Sleep
One night you go to bed late and when you wake up the next morning you realize just how bad you
feel. You might want to think about what and how you used technology as you were trying to get to
sleep or staying up until all hours of the night harmed your sleep. One reason teens might have
problems getting enough sleep is that teens have habits that negatively affect their sleep. Some
examples of bad habits are the use of technology and not going to sleep at a reasonable time.
However, the use of technology isn t always bad. One positive effect of using technology while trying
to sleep can be seen when listening to low aroused music, for example. It is when teens use
technology for other things that they hurt themselves. While some bad habits of teens can harm your
sleep, some behaviors can make your sleep better. Teens are negatively affected by their use of
technology at night. When you use your electronic devices at night you are risking your sleep. When
teens use their electronics at night the stay up because of, the blue light emitted by screens on cell
phones, computers, tablets, and televisions restrain the production of melatonin, the hormone that
controls your sleep/wake cycle or circadian rhythm. Reducing melatonin makes it harder to fall and
stay asleep (National Sleep Foundation). This means that using your electronics is bad because you
stay up playing on them rather than getting your well needed sleep. Also you need to keep your
bedroom technology free

Peggy Sinclair s Gung Ho !
The book I choice to read was the book from Ken Blanchard and Sheldon Bowles called Gung Ho! .
This book gives interesting perspective of leader versus management concept. The story start off when

Eternal Life In The Epic Of Gilgamesh
In The Epic of Gilgamesh, we re taught to appreciate life until the end. At the start of the story,
Gilgamesh is a powerful, but inconsiderate king. He wants so much, but instead of working for it, he
relies on fear to make other people do what he wants So he made his men to work, the women do his
beck and call, they wished that he was gone. (song, line 11 12) That is, until he meets Enkidu. The two
fight, but They both gave up, the battle ends and they decide to be best friends. (song, line 29 30)
Enkidu loyally accompanies Gilgamesh until he is struck with an illness and dies. After that,
Gilgamesh becomes consumed in his task to become immortal. During his journey, Shiduri attempts to
tell Gilgamesh that he will never obtain eternal life, but should cherish the life he s got left and spend
it in happiness, not despair. (456) because what is the point in living forever if you don t know
happiness? After Gilgamesh loses the plant meant to give him eternal life, he is in a state of complete
anguish. He feels like everything he did was in vain. The epic ends with him admiring his magnificent
city and appreciating its beauty and the work put into it. In a way, nothing significantly changes, but at
the same time, to him, everything does. Carry on Wayward Son by Kansas is a good example of
Gilgamesh s story and development. It gives the message that if you endure your trials till the end, you

Stephen Hawking. A bright student, a brilliant physicist, a brave man. The life of Hawking is full of
ups and downs, peaks and valleys, enlightened intelligence, and devastating disabilities. (I m still

Frank and Isobel Hawking resided in London, though because World War II was in full swing at this
point, they decided along with many others, that it would be safer to raise a family in Oxford. Both of

Luban s Critique Of Walzer Conception Of Legitimacy
In this paper, I will argue that Luban s critique of Walzer conception of legitimacy is misguided. I will
first present Walzer s argument for interventions using the legalist paradigm, in particular his
conception of self determination and how the principle of non intervention may be set aside in
exceptional circumstances. I will then present Luban s critique of Walzer and his argument for
developing an account of Just War directly in terms of human rights, before concluding with my own
critique of Luban s argument.
To begin, it will be useful to outline the legalist paradigm, as Walzer conceives it. This paradigm refers
to six propositions:
There exists an international society of independent states
2. This international society has a law that establishes the rights of its members above all, the rights of
territorial integrity and political sovereignty.
3. Any use of force or imminent threat of force by one state against the political sovereignty or
territorial integrity of another constitutes aggression and is a criminal act.
4. Aggression justifies two kinds of violent response: a war of self defense by the victim and a war of
law enforcement by the victim and any other member of international society.
5. Nothing but aggression can justify war.
6. Once the aggressor state has been militarily repulsed, it can also be punished.
What all these propositions seek to uphold is the sovereignty of states and their ability to self
determine their own futures. Aggression is

Themes Of Dehumanization In The Pianist
How does Roman Polanski portray the theme of dehumanisation of Jews in the film, the Pianist? The
2002 film, the Pianist directed by Roman Polanski is based on a real life story, that entails of a man s
struggle and experiences to withstand the German invasion in Warsaw, during World War 2.
Wladyslaw Szpilman is a Jewish musician who has everything taken away from him and is forced to
survive and hide. Implemented with temperamental and compelling scenes of the horrific behaviours
displayed by the Nazi s towards the Jews, Polanski presents the theme of the dehumanisation of Jews.
Polanski portrays the story of Wladyslaw Szpilman with a dark humour and a raw determination for
survival. In order to maintain this essence of the theme thoroughly within the film, Polanski utilizes
narrative elements and cinematic techniques such as, high angle, setting and characterisation to help
achieve this. The cinematography within a film enables the viewers to be taken into a journey,
showing different perspectives as well as, evoking different emotions along the way. During the
introduction scene of wasteland, Polanski uses high angle to portray the theme of the dehumanisation
of Jews within a deconstructed city. This scene starts with a high angle showing Szpilman in the
middle of the streets among the endless ruins of houses. Polanski used high angle to emphasize
Szpilman s loneliness, as he is seen in a deserted destination with no one else in sight. The high angle

I very much enjoyed Irish Folk Celtic Fiddle. The song is upbeat and exciting. When it first began, I
immediately thought of Irish step dancing and the tapping of shoes on the floor. It easily makes one
want to get up and dance. The reason it is perfect for dancing is because of the enthusiastic rhythm and
speed. It is played at a very fast tempo. When a tempo is quick, there is more energy and it is thrilling
compared to a slow song that is relaxing and meaningful. The majority of the notes are very quick
while a few are a bit longer. One part that interested me the most was at 0:43 in the video and it caught

Waknuk And The Fringes In The Chrysalids By John Wyndham
People in this world mature in different ways, by the way, they have been affected in their life and it
builds up to someone who has responsibilities as an adult. Our difficult situations make us overcome
our responsibilities and achieve our goals due to our problems. People in communities want to have
safety and be proud of their work in the community that they have made for people who are normal.
The communities of Waknuk and The Fringes in The Chrysalids by John Wyndham are very different
and to overcome their difficulties they use their strengths to achieve goals and bring others down
when the Fringes are trying to overcome adversity and mature by understanding their situation that
they need to overcome. Joseph Storm has rules that are beliefs that have been made for a long period
of time and it leads to people not being allowed to act without clearly proving their point that is not
always accepted because of the beliefs that are not to be changed. In our world, we need the advice to
lead us to our decisions that are not always agreed upon. The goals of the Waknuk community are
strong and hurt others for their differences as a mutant. They are respected, but people have fear and
the Waknuk community is using that for their goals. Joseph Storm does not let anyone accompaniment
their ideas. He sees people not for whom they are, but what they are. When David tells Joseph his idea
that it is not a big deal being a mutant there is no way Joseph could

Molar Mass Of Butane And Unknown
Molar Mass of Butane and unknown
Abstract:
The purpose of this lab is to find the molar mass of mixed gases in a lighter, and to calculate the exact
mixture of gases in the lighter. The results of this lab were the mass of the lighter, as 100 mL of water
was displaced, was 0.27g, 0.17g, and 0.28g. The molar masses of the gasses for three trials were 64.3
g/mol, 40.5 g/mol, and 66.7 g/mol.
Background:
The purpose of this lab is to find the molar mass of mixed gases in a lighter, and to calculate the exact
mixture of gases in the lighter. While collecting the volume of Butane gas in a lighter, the molar mass
can also be determined. When attempting to find the molar mass, water displacement is the best
method to use. This can be determined because the equal volumes of all gases contain equal number of
particles, so long as they are measured at the same temperature and pressure. Ideal gas law is the
chemistry involved with this experiment. The equations M=mRT/PV and PV=nRT can be seen
throughout this experiment.
Pre Lab questions:
The Ideal gas law demonstrates a relationship between different values in the equation PV=nRT. The
ideal gas law will be used to find the molar mass of butane.
The ideal gas law can be changed with the equation n=m/M. It can be seen that moles equals mass
over molar mass. This can be changed, and substituted into the Ideal gas law to find the molar mass.
The equation goes from PV=nRT to M=mRT/PV.
Molar Mass is the mass of a given substance. It

What Is Examined Life Essay
n the immortal words of Socrates, The unexamined life is not worth living. Socrates certainly felt
strongly about his beliefs as he was willing to die for them and eventually did. But was it really worth
losing his life over? If so, will examining life make you happier? Life is worth examining, although
doing so will not always make people happy. The question then is why is it worth examining? It is
simple; the purpose of human beings is to grow to be better, something that cannot be achieved if we
do not examine life.
Even though we do not know what our purpose in life is, as a whole it can be agreed that humans seek
to improve themselves. Thinking back to human ancestral species the Homo erectus it is understood
that they did not simply accept the world for what was in front of them.
Rather, when opportunity for discovery was presented to them they set forth to it. For example, when
early hominin species discovered fire they did not simply walk away and accept the fact that it was a
part of nature and should therefore be left to be. Instead they questioned this aspect of nature and
through further examination were able to tame fire, an element that has long been credited for the rise
of human species.
Certainly it was well worth it for human ancestors to have examined life. Although in that situation it
brought happiness, this will not always be the case, allow me to elaborate. The
American government spends billions of dollars protecting its citizens from terrorist by

Common Causes of War and Genocide Essay example
Genocide, or the systematic destruction of a race or tribe is an all too common phenomenon in our
planet s history and even more so in Africa. Genocide and war share many common causes such as
desperation brought on by a declining economy. Experts on the Central African Republic believe that
current events point to a possible repeat of the Rwandan genocide of 1994, in which over one million
people were killed. Many think that U.N. involvement is necessary to stop the escalating violence in
the Central African Republic; others believe that the dismal track record of the U.N. in similar
situations makes it unlikely that they could be effective in the current crisis. Regardless, an already
bad human rights situation is likely to worsen.

To escape the slave traders, many Africans moved from place to place, avoiding contact with other
people. The historic isolation between groups has contributed to the difficulty Central Africans have
had in developing a modern government or identity.
The 20th century, often called the century of genocide gives numerous events from which information
can be drawn to help understand the declining situation in the Central African Republic. There have
been a number of genocides outside of Africa in the 20th century to include: the holocaust of World
War II brought on by Adolf Hitler in which approximately six million Jews were killed, the
Holodomor in the Ukraine under Josef Stalin with a Ukrainian population reduction of as much as 25
percent, and the massacre in Cambodia under Pol Pot with around two millions Cambodian deaths.
Within Africa, from April 6 to July 15, 1994, a barbaric act of genocide took place in Rwanda before
the very eyes of the troops of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Rwanda. Hundreds of
thousands of old people, women, children, and even tiny babies were hunted down and cut to pieces in
every corner of this land of terror.
These genocides all have in common widespread economic strife and food shortages, being the reason
for upheaval, and Totalitarian governments which is the mechanism that allows the genocides to occur.

The Punishment And Capital Punishment Essay
In the horizon, there are always heightened debates over issues with capital punishment in today
judicial system. Today thirty three states, along with the United Stated Government and U.S. military,
have the power to legally take away someone s life. Though it is very much illegal to take someone
life within society, our state and federal government s do the very same thing we are prohibited from
doing. The first section in this paper, will be discussing the reason on why our governments allow
capital punishment, relating to the deterrence of crimes such as murder. The deterrence of murder and
capital punishment seem to only work if you over exercise capital punishment. Such evidence
provided will show the difference in states that utilize capital punishment more than other states that
have not abolished the deterrence method. The second section will be discussing the retribution
relating to capital punishment. It also covers unanswered questions that relate to utilizing methods of
execution on innocent people. The last section covers the Eighth Amendment violation relating to
cruel and unusual punishment. It also discusses some of the botched executions that have been
conducted over the years.
Deterrence
Recent studies by sociologist suggest that capital punishment and/or the death penalty, does not deter
crimes such as murder . On the other hand, recent empirical studies conducted by economists suggest
that capital punishment does deter crimes such as murder

Research Paper On Coeliac Disease
What is Coeliac disease? :
It is where the immune system reacts abnormally to gluten (a protein found in wheat, rye, barley and
oats), causing bowel damage. The villi which line the bowel become inflamed and flattened (referred
to as villous atrophy). Villous atrophy reduces the surface area of the bowel which is available for
nutrient absorption, this can lead to various gastrointestinal and malabsorptive symptoms.
Who gets Coeliac disease? :
It affects both males and females of all ages. You must be born with the genetic predisposition to
develop Coeliac disease. A close relative (parent, sibling, or child) of someone with coeliac disease
has about a 10% chance of also having the disease. Also environmental factors can play a major role
in triggering Coeliac disease (e.g. stress).
How common? :
It affects 1 in 70 Australians, though 80% of those remain undiagnosed but with the better diagnosis
rates in the past few year, it means there is improved awareness of the condition.
Can Coeliac disease be cured? :
Those with this disease will remain sensitive to gluten throughout their entire life, so with that they are
never truly cured. A strict, lifelong gluten free diet allows them to manage the condition effectively
and allows the bowel lining to heal and symptoms to be resolved. However relapse can occur if gluten

Misconceptions In Richard Cory, By Edwin Robinson
Someone may judge a book by its cover, but they don t know the true meaning until they flip through

fame, fortune, and good looks, but beneath it all, existed a troubled soul and psychological mindset
that no one was able to uncover until it was too late. In the story Richard Cory, by Edwin Robinson,
the idea of society and one s own mindset misinterpreting a situation is expanded upon in this
reference to the outside appearances of Richard Cory because of how they assumed he had the perfect
life but actually was suicidal. People always instantly judge by their first impression because that is
what has become a norm for society. In the community ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Benefits Of Using New Virtual Technologies
Today s economy has become a global one due to the use of the internet. Traditional companies are
accepting the mission of using new virtual technologies in their business since the use of the internet
has opened larger and advantageous international markets. Proud of the costly infrastructure,
traditional companies are finding themselves being eclipsed by smaller companies that have used the
internet to attract new customers. In order to achieve great results, companies in today s economy are
obligated to embrace the use of the internet (Markus, T. 2008).
In recent years, larger companies have included more and more online processes because customers
are becoming more engaged with the internet, wanting to do everything by themselves. By cutting
much of the traditional companies expenses through the use of eCommerce, virtual companies are
stealing established companies market by offering better prices in the online market. According to
Markus, T. (2008), e commerce is an electronic market in which electronic sellers and buyers gather in
order to negotiate for products and services. E commerce gives the consumer multiple options since
the Internet contains endless number of products and services (Markus, T. 2008). Netflix is a good
example of an e commerce industry. Founded in 1997 by Marc Randolph and Reed Hastings in Scotts
Valley, California, Netflix Inc. was a movie rental business by mail as many other offline video
providers. In 1999, since the company was not

Chief Master Sergeant Paul W. Airey Essay
Air Force Senior Noncommissioned Officer Academy Introduction There are many types of leaders
not only in the military, but also in every civilian company around the world. We rarely see a leader
who possesses both vision and an ethical style of leadership; however, CMSgt Paul W. Airey, the first
Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force, was this type of leader. Throughout this paper I will discuss
his ability to be both a visionary and ethical leader, which resulted in CMSgt Airey being labeled a
legend (LaGrone, 2009, p.2). He was described by the former Chief of Staff, General Norton Schwartz
as an Airman s Airman and one of the true pioneers of the service (LaGrone, 2009, p.2). CMSgt Airey

CMSgt Airey used his leadership ability to address the low retention rates of first term Airmen, which
was at a 12 year low (Lucas, 1997). As a visionary leader he understood that it was not just the war in
Vietnam that was to blame for the low retention (Lucas, 1997). He realized that the promotion system
was broken and he set his sites on developing a system that would improve promotion opportunities
for every Airman (Lucas, 1997). Many would say that this was the most influential contribution he
made during his tenure. CMSgt Airey led a team from several career fields. He understood and used
the Z process according to Thomas N. Barnes Center (2012a) team building when he met with his
team (p.6 8). The teams use and understanding according to Thomas N. Barnes Center (2012a) change
management resulted in the the development of the Weighted Airman Promotion System (WAPS)
(p.17 19) (Lucas, 1997). Chief Airey was quoted as saying the end result was a promotion system
which today is still in effect and is by far the fairest, most equitable enlisted promotion system of any
of the armed forces (Lucas, 1997, p3). Furthermore, CMSgt Airey understood that you could not have
vision if you sat behind a desk and because of this he traveled to many bases throughout his tenure. He
was asked by the chairman of the House Banking Committee to go to Europe after many complaints
about outrageous interest rates on loans

The Impact Of Sexism On Social Media
Women experience several occasions where they feel harassed or discriminated because of their
gender. There are things that need to change in order to make women feel safe when exploring the
internet. Sexism on social media has become a major problem over the past years, it lowers the self
esteem of women and makes them feel inferior. As a society, there are changes that must be made in
order to fix this problem.
Sexist content on social media is becoming a bigger problem as more and more people are using the
internet daily. Both Yvette Cooper and Ashley Judd, believe there are several things people can do to
fix this problem. Author Yvette Cooper states that change on sexist content is vital because it not only
affects women of this generation but it also affects future generations. She believes that it s important
society teaches the next generations that sexism on social media is not normal. At the TEDWomen
event, actress Ashley Judd, talked about her experience and how she felt when she would receive
sexist comments online. She states the change is crucial and the government has to do something to
try and fix it. She states there has to be more rules and regulations among the internet in order to stop
sexism on social media. On the other hand, Lebanese nut company, Alrifai, advertised their products
in a sexist manner. The nuts in the advertisements were compared to men and women and how they

Detection And Treatment Of Malocclusions And Other Dental...
Abstract
Detection and treatment of malocclusions and other dental deformities are a considerable field of work
in the plan of orthodontic treatment. Severe malformations of the midface such as maxillary or
mandibular deformity can be treated by the distraction and reformation of skull bones. During an
operation, the appropriate bony part of the mid face is separated from the rest of the skull (osteotomy),
slowly moved into the ideal position by way of a distraction device. In the current clinical practice,
planning for orthodontic treatment and orthognathic surgery was based on Computed Tomography
(CT) data sets. CT images are inefficient for helping the orthodontists and surgeons in treatment and
surgical planning. A tool is needed to help the physicians and surgeons in the treatment planning in
order to anticipate the results and give the accurate decision, in this paper there are preliminary
descriptive studies on DICOM images of the skull to help the orthodontists by providing the following
algorithms: Segmentation of the lower jaw (mandible), Segmentation of the upper jaw (maxilla) from
CT data, Segmentation of upper teeth, each tooth and computation of mandible volume.
Keywords: CT scans, threshold, K mean, Region growing, DICOM.

Huntington s Disease ( Hd ) Is A Neurodegenerative Disease
Huntington s disease (HD) is a neurodegenerative disease that affects roughly 10 individuals per
100,000 (Nopoulus, 2016). This disorder is normally associated with symptoms including motor
impairment, namely slowed movements and random muscle contractions, as well as depression and
cognitive dysfunction. However, another prominent symptom that has yet to be mentioned until
recently is sleep disturbance and alteration of normal circadian rhythms. It is estimated that 60 90% of
HD patients have sleep issues and that nearly 60% see those issues as being factors in their overall
problems (Goodman et al., 2010). Despite the minimal volume of studies, the overwhelming
proportion of HD patients who are afflicted with circadian dysfunction and ... Show more content on

However, in HD patients metabolic dysfunction is commonplace (Morton, 2013). A study using
transgenic R6/2 mice, which were designed to imitate conditions similar to HD, has shown that the
mice exhibit dysfunction and disconnection of the peripheral clocks from the SCN s control
(Maywood et al., 2010). These mice exhibited liver function that was characterized by loss of
circadian control. The liver plays a crucial role in maintaining metabolic homeostasis, so this could be
a possible explanation to the metabolic dysfunction that is seen so often in HD. If the peripheral
clocks are disoriented from the central rhythms, then this can result in different body systems no
longer working as effectively as when they are in sync. Furthermore, research has also revealed that
circadian function within the SCN is also directly affected by HD. In another study using R6/2 mice, it
was found that the mice night day ratios were abnormal, revealing circadian disruption (Morton et al.,
2005). In addition to their activity patterns, the mice SCN activity were also directly measured using
electrodes and a clamp. After monitoring, it was found that the expression of their clock genes was
severely disrupted. While knowing that circadian rhythms directly within the SCN are altered in
organisms with HD is an essential step to find the most efficient treatment to normalize these
organisms, it does not reveal the way in which Huntington s

Differences Between Men And Women Essay
In the book it discussed three major differences in cognitive abilities between men and women. The
first having to deal with women having higher verbal abilities, the second being mathematical in
where men are higher and third being spatial abilities which also has men being higher. With the
spatial abilities though there is evidence that women have an advantage on some tasks. Cognitive sex
differences I think are more social than environmental because of things like stereotype threat in
where the person knows of the stereotype and it negatively affects their performance. In the Smith and
white 2012 study found that the performance of college women was worse on a math test when they
heard that men do better on this type of test, but men performance also declined when they heard that
Asians outperform whites. the knowledge of stereotypes has many effects on boys and girls one it
makes them not try as hard because they think it is expected of them to do worse. Yes, I believe that
real differences can be reduced through interventions. Johns et al (2005) found that women who were
informed of the potential effects of gender based stereotype threat performed better than women who
were not. This finding suggests that having explicit conversations with stigmatized students about
stereotype threat and its effects may be a simple yet highly effective intervention.

Aluminum Vs Zinc
Table 1 contains corresponding information to figure 1, as already analyzed, despite having the
highest concentrated acid solution, zinc has the lowest output of gas compared to aluminum and
magnesium. Looking at the trends, aluminum and magnesium have relatively steady increases of mass
and corresponding volume (the amount of gas about doubles as the mass is increased by about 0.02
grams). Zinc, on the other hand, increases by almost triple when the mass is tripled, but levels off after
and slowly increases in gas production, but is nowhere near magnesium and aluminum. Magnesium
and aluminum are much more reactive than zinc in this reaction; the reactivity of both metals can be
deducted from their chemical properties on the periodic table;

If the United States were to adopt a Communist government, it would be a better country. If
Americans were to dispose of religion, they would be content people. If Richard Wright were to

Although Bigger s character refutes the concept of religion, Wright compares him to a struggling Jesus
Christ throughout the novel; society is to learn from Bigger s example that capitalism is the core evil
of the country, just as Christians look to Christ to delineate between sin and salvation. Bigger s
interactions with the Daltons mirror those of Jesus throughout the Stations of the Cross. Bigger s
initial visit to the Dalton home foreshadows his death because the setting mimics that of the
crucifixion; all at once...the sky [turns] black (48), as it does while Jesus hangs upon the cross on
Good Friday. When Bigger first visits the Dalton home, he slip[s] back (51) into his chair, just as Jesus
falls while carrying his cross to Mount Calvary; this scene represents the persecution in store for
Bigger by those families who, like the Daltons, consider themselves religious. Even during the murder
and burning of the body of Mary Dalton, Bigger s actions parallel Christ s. Similar to Christ s struggle
with the cross upon his back, Bigger stoop[s] and ca[tches] the strap of Mary s trunk and carrie[s] it
downstairs (103) with her body inside, and the murder of Mary becomes Bigger s cross, upon which
he is executed.

The Wonderful Bedroom Essay
The Wonderful Bedroom
Have you ever wondered how something so simple as your bedroom could have so much meaning?
How a place where one usually just sleeps and doesn t return until the next night, could be so special

gym does to a basketball player or as much as a tree does to a monkey. But then there are also those
who still think of their bedroom as just a place to sleep and prepare themselves. I guess things have
different meanings for each person, but for many including myself, their bedroom ranks near the top

And what could possibly be a more relaxing place than your own room? It s amazing how one can
concentrate so well in their room, unlike a college student who may have trouble trying to focus
through all of the distractions.
Not only is the bedroom a perfect place to sleep and study, but what if you just want to get away and
relax? In your room, you get to control things for yourself, such as the temperature. It s not like
outside where you can t do anything about the weather, but rather, you choose how cool or warm you
want it. You get to make your bed as comfortable as you wish. This is your space, it s not fit for
anybody else s needs but your own. Ever try and watch what you want on TV while there are four
other members of your family fighting to grab control of the same thing? Well, I have the perfect
solution. Move the TV in your own room and lock the door. It s wonders how many more
opportunities you have when you have your own room. I ve always had my own room and pretty
much take it for granted. I always have the option of taking a nap in peace and quiet since I have never
had to share. The list of positives is endless when it comes to having your own room
A final and probably the greatest factor of all is the individuality of one s room. This is what declares
the difference from one person s room to the next. It brings out one s character and personality.

Prior to the countercultural revolution of the 1960 s, the legal experimentation of psychedelic drugs

psychedelic means mind manifesting or altering and was given to hallucinogens like marijuana, LSD,
MDMA, and psilocybin in 1956 by psychiatrist Humphrey Osmond (Taylor 1). The studies grew
rapidly but medical progress was quickly halted because of the legal ramifications in response to the

The counterculture was a subculture founded by a group of rebellious youth and antiwar activists that
opposed the views of the mainstream society and protested the Vietnam war. During this period, LSD

riots, anti war demonstrations and the counterculture . There were reported suicides, loss of sanity and
claims that the usage caused discomfort and confusion, instead of peace and enlightenment. The
problem soon drew political interest. Skeptical of the scientific medical benefits, the government
began to enforce stricter policies regarding research practices. Regardless of the promising
developments, the government dictated that there was not sufficient evidence or rationality to the
studies. Science demands repeatability, proof and rationality (Alyushin 589). Requiring studies to

physical evidence and results were limited to many of the subjects first hand experiences and negative

policies then suppressed and restricted psychedelic research by making the substances illegal in 1968

Underage Drinking Alcohol
Drinking Alcohol Should Be Banned On Young People
Underage drinking alcohol contributes to the death of approximately 5,000 people every year the
violence, injuries, aggressive behavior and deaths that can result from underage drinking. Drinking
alcohol among teens, college students and adolescents is a major health problem in the United States,

Cultural Impact On Hurricane Katrina
Hurricane Katrina was one of the most devastating natural disasters on record in the United States
(Skinner, 2006) In August of 2005, Hurricane Katrina made landfall along the Gulf Coast destroying
buildings, homes and communities (Skinner, 2006). Storm surges and levee failures resulted in an
estimated $108 billion in physical property damage, specifically in the areas of Louisiana, Mississippi
and Alabama (Skinner, 2006). Furthermore, Katrina proved itself to be one of the deadliest disasters in
U.S. history as it claimed the lives of more than 1,800 people (Skinner, 2006).
The impact of natural disasters is often discussed in the context of physical destruction, economic or
financial consequences, or loss of human lives. While all of these factors are certainly important in
gaining a complete understanding of the devastation caused by natural disasters, the psychological
impact these traumatic events have on survivors is often overlooked. Likewise, it is essential to
consider the impact that local culture impact the government s response to disasters such as Hurricane
Katrina in order to understand why black residents reported higher incidences of psychological
distress than any other racial group. The areas most profoundly impacted by Hurricane Katrina have a
history rooted deeply in racial discrimination and segregation (Chia Chen Chen, Keith, Airriess,
Leong, 2007). Understanding this cultural history is essential in gaining a complete and
comprehensive view on why

Tidal Power
Engineering Design for Sustainability
TIDAL WAVE ENERGY
Introduction
Tidal power is a form of energy which derives directly from the relative motions of the Earth/Moon
system, and to a lesser extent from the Earth/Sol system.
Tidal energy is gained from the exchange of large bodies of water. Changes in water levels, and
associated tidal currents, are due to the gravitational pull of the Sun and Moon. This makes Tidal
Power completely predictable; furthermore, because it is created by relative motion of the special
bodies, it is in exhaustible.
Therefore Tidal power is much more reliable than other renewable sources such as wind or solar
power and will long outlast fossil fuels.
Tidal Power in the UK
It is estimated that tidal power ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At high tide sea water flows into the reservoir through a one way gate. The gate closes when the tide
begin to fall and when the tide is low enough, the stored water is released at pressure through turbines,
back into the sea. The rotation of these turbines generates electricity.
The first commercial scale tidal generating barrage rated at 240 MW was built in La Rance. There is
smaller plant in Nova Scotia, rated at 20 megawatts (enough power for 4,500 homes).
The Dam for the tidal power plant on the estuary of the Rance River, Bretagne, France
The viability of Barrage systems has been questioned due to high civil infrastructure costs and
environmental issues. Although this method have proven very durable, barrage style power plants are
very expensive to build and are fraught with environmental problems from the accumulation of silt
within the dam catchment area (requiring regular, expensive dredging).
There are only a few potential sites across the globe and there are only three functioning plants
worldwide (Rance River, Bay of Fundy and Kislaya Guba).
Tidal Stream Systems
Engineers have created two new kinds of devices to harness the energy of tidal currents and generate
renewable, pollution free electricity. These are: Vertical axis and Horizontal axis models. They are
determined by the orientation of a subsea, rotating shaft that turns a gearbox linked to a turbine with

The Worst Flood Of The Mississippi River Basin
In 1993, the Midwest experienced the worst flood in American history affecting ten states in the Upper
Mississippi River basin. The flooding lasted from late spring to fall, killing fifty two people and
damaging a 100,000 homes and businesses. The cause of the flooding was a heavy winter with lots of
snow and a spring season full of rain, which saturated the soil. Instead, of a hot summer, the rain kept
coming and the Upper Mississippi River Basin received three and a half times its normal rain. Since it
continuously rained, the water levels kept rising and many of the levees broke. The water levels stayed
high for weeks destroying towns and agriculture all throughout the Midwest.
One of the main issues leading up to the flood of 1993 was the failed communication and partnership
between local, state, and federal governments. The federal government is in charge of floodplain
management instead of the local and state government, which prevents local governments becoming
involved. This form of management flaw became revealed by the amount of damage the flood made.
The reason the damage was so devastating and so many people lost their homes and businesses is
because the federal government failed to understand the Executive Order of 1977 and permitted
building in the flood plains. Some examples of the EO being understood are a low income housing
project funded by HUD and a federally funded state prison within floodplains, and a proposed
construction of a federal weather

themes that black is beautiful (Bouchard). Showing how the blues can work one tirelessly yet give

late into the night, he ends his performance and went to bed while the Weary Blues echoed through his

qualities of the blues that give [the blues player] his identity, yet when he sleeps as a de animated

Football Players Need Yoga
When most Americans hear the word yoga , they think of a petite girl in a ponytail and leggings,
carrying her purple yoga mat. This image has become so completely part of the culture of American
yoga that the general response when suggesting yoga as a training method is either That s for girls, or
But I m not flexible. These responses were generated by an overall ignorance regarding yoga as a
practice. Imagine, for a moment, a very large and muscular man with the soles of his feet together on
the ground in butterfly pose. Now imagine that one man in a large room with twenty men much like

yoga, any NFL athlete will soon see the benefits of this training. Yoga is also proven to improve focus,
which happens through focusing on breath and holding postures. This great side effect can be carried
over by football players to the field and help prevent any major distractions that could lead to injury.
Awareness of surroundings and others is just one of the positive effects yoga will have on the mind.
Many NFL players are known as hot heads with short tempers. Luckily, yoga is a wonderful remedy to
mind related problems such as stress, finding a better connection to the body, and creating an overall
happier athlete. Stress is a huge part of many professional athletes jobs, and with so many fans and so
much riding upon their shoulders, football players feel this more than most. Yoga is not just strength

Triangle Fire Research Paper
Karley M. Vahl #27 7 G Monday, April 23, 2018 Friday, May 4, 2018 The Triangle Factory Fire at the
Asch Building What happened the day of the Triangle Fire? What progressed after it? On Saturday,
March 25, 1911. At 4:25, which was 5 minutes before closing time at the Triangle Shirt Factory. The
Triangle factory, owned by Max Blanck and Isaac Harris, was located on the top three floors of the
Asch Building, floors 8, 9, and 10. Some cutters were smoking, even though it was prohibited.
Though it is not certain, people believe that a cutter flicked a cigarette butt or hot ash, into one of the
waste bins with flammable cloth in them. Many of the garment workers before the year of 1911 were
unorganized, mostly because they were young immigrant ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This incident has had great significance to this day because it highlights the inhumane working
conditions. The Triangle Fire tragically illustrated that fire inspections and precautions were woefully
inadequate at the time. Outraged cries calling for action to improve the unsafe conditions in
workshops could be heard from every quarter, from the mainstream conservative to the progressive
and union press. The role that strong unions could have in helping prevent such tragedies became
clear. Workers organized in powerful unions would be more conscious of their rights and better able to
obtain safe working conditions. Immediately after the fire, Triangle owners Blanck and Harris
declared in interviews that their building was fireproof, and that it had just been approved by the
Department of Buildings, but the building lacked the third required staircase. On December 27, twenty
three days after the trial had started, a jury acquitted Blanck and Harris of any wrongdoing. Brought to
court, he was fined twenty dollars, and the judge apologized to him for the imposition. Twenty three
individual civil suits were brought against the owners of the Asch

Assisted Suicide Argumentative Essay
Dogs do not have many advantages over people, but one of them is extremely important: euthanasia is
not forbidden by law in their case; animals have the right to a merciful death.
― Milan Kundera, The Unbearable Lightness of Being
One of the most controversial topics that is being debated today, both morally and legally, is assisted
suicide, sometimes known as active euthanasia. Assisted suicide is the act of directly intervening in
order to end the life of a terminally ill patient (i.e. administering a large amount of sleeping pills). The
word euthanasia , comes from Latin eu for good and thanatos for death (OCRT 1). Many people in this
country are existing in a living death , suffering on a day to day basis. The ... Show more content on

They believe that assisted suicide crosses the moral border into government condoned killing. The
Christian, Jewish, and Muslim religions all seem to strictly discourage assisted suicide, as well as all
types of suicide. They stress that life is God s alone to give, and God s alone to take (Van Biema 61).
Traditional Christian beliefs against suicide were first affirmed by Thomas Aquinas, a writer in the
early thirteenth century. He emphasized that suicide (and assisted suicide) violates one s natural desire
to live, harms other people, and that life is God s gift to give and take (OCRT 2). Not all religions are
against suicide, either. Hinduism promotes the taking of one s own life instead of living with dishonor
(Flanders 49).
Whatever a religion may offer as it s belief about suicide, the followers of that religion do not always
uphold that belief. At Masada, for example, a sect of fervently religious Jews known as Zealots held
off Roman invaders for two years. When it became apparent that defeat was inevitable, their leader
convinced the remaining nine hundred and sixty of them to commit suicide (Flanders 5). And Michel
de Montaigne, a Christian writer living in France in the mid sixteenth century wrote five essays
arguing that suicide is a matter of personal choice, and it is a viable option under some circumstances
(OCRT 1).
The American support of active euthanasia has been seen in national organizations

Eugene V. Debs Essay
Eugene V. Debs Citizen and Socialist
Nick Salvatore s book Eugene V. Debs Citizen and Socialist provides a very detailed account of the
life and times and Eugene Debs. Debs was born in Terre Haute Indiana and Salvatore emphasizes the
important role that this played in Debs upbringing. Terre Haute was ripe with religious
fundamentalism from its founding. Religion permeated everyday life throughout Terre Haute.
Salvatore writes that, In newspaper editorials, political speeches, civic dedications and Sunday
sermons they assured the kingdom of God had already arrived and that their town was destined to
become the center of the Kingdoms Midwest development. It is striking how the ideals of the Terre

He was still active as grand secretary of the BLF at this time and engaged in the national debate
regarding the need for a larger all encompassing railway union in place of smaller ones to advance the
needs of railway workers. He believed a larger national union would be much more effective in this
role. Salvatore argues that at this time Debs even began to form the idea of a all encompassing union
for all laborers nationwide at this time. He retired from his role in the BLF in 1891 and organized the
first national industrial union in the United States in 1893, the American Railway union or ARU. He
rose to the national spotlight as the leader of the ARU when they struck on the great northern railway
in 1894 and had all of their demands unconditionally granted after 18 days. This was the first large
scale union victory in American history and emphasized Debs ability as a Labor leader.
In 1894 Debs was confronted with his most daunting situation to date. He presided over the infamous
Pullman strike in Chicago in 1895. This proved to be the most important event in Debs life regarding
the formation of his ideologies. This was the first strike in America which was not authorized by the
laborers local unions. The employees being both members of their local unions and Debs ARU
showed their allegiance to the ARU and struck with Debs approval. The workers refused to operate
any trains with Pullman cars on them except

The Court also stated that a claimant would have to demonstrate the bank had acted in bad faith before civil liability would be entertained. In its decision the Court of appeal did make reference to the dual pull on Banks in having to comply with the heavy demands of a regulator whilst mitigating civil actions from potentially disgruntled customers. It also made reference to a previous court case (De Silva v NatWest Bank 2006) where the court made specific reference to the meaning of the word suspect . Here, in relations to the claim by Mr Shah that the reason for the suspicion itself was irrational, negligently self induced and mistaken, the court confirmed that HSBC merely had to think that there was a possibility, which was more than fanciful, that the relevant facts exist when completing its SAR. On a wider note the Court also deemed that in the future having a suspicion may constitute a good defence for Banks. The subject of tipping off can be one of the most ambiguous subjects within financial organisations. There are clear laws that have financial and punitive repercussions for those who recklessly or mistakenly divulge the suspicions of the firm they are working on behalf of. • 3. The Story of J.D. Salinger The Story of J. D. Salinger J. D. Salinger became one of the most popular and known American authors in America today. Up to this day students from all over the country have read and purchased the novel The Catcher in the Rye which was a novel that was not so long ago controversial due to vulgar language, sexual references, and unacceptable behavior; parents were concerned that J. D. Salinger s novel was going to influence their children. Salinger was one of many authors that stood out more from a group of authors that wrote simply about society. Salinger on the other hand criticised the society by using the word phony most of the time. The word phony meant fake, false, and fraudulent and by the 1950 s the word became used more and more frequently. Some of Salinger s famous pieces of work like Nine Stories, Franny and Zooey, The Catcher in the Rye , and Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters and Seymour: An Introduction presented themes such as love, war, death, and the reminiscing of something. The themes widely connected to J. D. Salinger by reason of his personal experiences and character traits . The success of J. D. Salinger was reached by personally experiencing the drafting to war and actively writing about his surroundings. • 4. Lost Girl Analysis Lost Girl was performed at the Oscar G. Brockett Theatre in the F. Loren Winship Building by Texas Theatre and Dance. Written by Kimberly Belflower, the play engaged the audience through its use of projection designs, surprise effects, and sedentary set designs and was well received by adults and students alike. Through these factors, the production was able to relay the message of finding oneself to the audience, and encourage those who are lost to follow Wendy Darling s path to acceptance. Primarily, Lost Girl utilizes digitally projected shadows in the play to offer not only a background for the plot, but also a connection to the movie Peter Pan. As the public is more acquainted with Disney s version of the animated film, the projection ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When the narrators stated Wendy wrote letters to Peter , instead of acting out the phrase, a platform opened above the stage and poured out letters that Wendy wrote. When the sheets of paper cascaded down, some people let out a gasp of surprise. A few letters even drifted to the front row of seats, and some were picked up by the audience. In effect, this action allowed the audience to have a three dimensional interaction with the play. Previously, a performance usually only integrates the senses of sight and sound, but in this instance people were able to reach out and touch the flying papers. The surprise effect allows Lost Girl to surpass the traditional theatre space, and to allow the audience a deeper immersion into the play. From the engagement, the crumpled up papers not only symbolize Wendy s frustrated attempts in communicating with Peter, but also her incompetence in forgetting the past. Like a sheet of paper, Wendy was able to momentarily fly, but once she reached the ground, she was just like any other girl in the world. Through this effect, the play s message is relayed through surprises, and the public experiences the theme on a deeper level as they not only can see or hear emotions, but can also physically feel ... You might want to think about what and how you used technology as you were trying to get to sleep or staying up until all hours of the night harmed your sleep. One reason teens might have problems getting enough sleep is that teens have habits that negatively affect their sleep. Some examples of bad habits are the use of technology and not going to sleep at a reasonable time. However, the use of technology isn t always bad. One positive effect of using technology while trying to sleep can be seen when listening to low aroused music, for example. It is when teens use technology for other things that they hurt themselves. While some bad habits of teens can harm your sleep, some behaviors can make your sleep better. Teens are negatively affected by their use of technology at night. When you use your electronic devices at night you are risking your sleep. When teens use their electronics at night the stay up because of, the blue light emitted by screens on cell phones, computers, tablets, and televisions restrain the production of melatonin, the hormone that controls your sleep/wake cycle or circadian rhythm. • 12. Luban s Critique Of Walzer Conception Of Legitimacy In this paper, I will argue that Luban s critique of Walzer conception of legitimacy is misguided. I will first present Walzer s argument for interventions using the legalist paradigm, in particular his conception of self determination and how the principle of non intervention may be set aside in exceptional circumstances. I will then present Luban s critique of Walzer and his argument for developing an account of Just War directly in terms of human rights, before concluding with my own critique of Luban s argument. To begin, it will be useful to outline the legalist paradigm, as Walzer conceives it. This paradigm refers to six propositions: There exists an international society of independent states 2. This international society has a law that establishes the rights of its members above all, the rights of territorial integrity and political sovereignty. 3. Any use of force or imminent threat of force by one state against the political sovereignty or territorial integrity of another constitutes aggression and is a criminal act. 4. Aggression justifies two kinds of violent response: a war of self defense by the victim and a war of law enforcement by the victim and any other member of international society. 5. Nothing but aggression can justify war. 6. Once the aggressor state has been militarily repulsed, it can also be punished. What all these propositions seek to uphold is the sovereignty of states and their ability to self determine their own futures. Aggression is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The cinematography within a film enables the viewers to be taken into a journey, showing different perspectives as well as, evoking different emotions along the way. Waknuk And The Fringes In The Chrysalids By John Wyndham People in this world mature in different ways, by the way, they have been affected in their life and it builds up to someone who has responsibilities as an adult. Our difficult situations make us overcome our responsibilities and achieve our goals due to our problems. People in communities want to have safety and be proud of their work in the community that they have made for people who are normal. The communities of Waknuk and The Fringes in The Chrysalids by John Wyndham are very different and to overcome their difficulties they use their strengths to achieve goals and bring others down when the Fringes are trying to overcome adversity and mature by understanding their situation that they need to overcome. Joseph Storm has rules that are beliefs that have been made for a long period of time and it leads to people not being allowed to act without clearly proving their point that is not always accepted because of the beliefs that are not to be changed. In our world, we need the advice to lead us to our decisions that are not always agreed upon. The goals of the Waknuk community are strong and hurt others for their differences as a mutant. They are respected, but people have fear and the Waknuk community is using that for their goals. Joseph Storm does not let anyone accompaniment their ideas. Molar Mass Of Butane And Unknown Molar Mass of Butane and unknown Abstract: The purpose of this lab is to find the molar mass of mixed gases in a lighter, and to calculate the exact mixture of gases in the lighter. The results of this lab were the mass of the lighter, as 100 mL of water was displaced, was 0.27g, 0.17g, and 0.28g. The molar masses of the gasses for three trials were 64.3 g/mol, 40.5 g/mol, and 66.7 g/mol. Background: The purpose of this lab is to find the molar mass of mixed gases in a lighter, and to calculate the exact mixture of gases in the lighter. While collecting the volume of Butane gas in a lighter, the molar mass can also be determined. When attempting to find the molar mass, water displacement is the best method to use. This can be determined because the equal volumes of all gases contain equal number of particles, so long as they are measured at the same temperature and pressure. Ideal gas law is the chemistry involved with this experiment. The equations M=mRT/PV and PV=nRT can be seen throughout this experiment. Pre Lab questions: The Ideal gas law demonstrates a relationship between different values in the equation PV=nRT. The ideal gas law will be used to find the molar mass of butane. The ideal gas law can be changed with the equation n=m/M. It can be seen that moles equals mass over molar mass. This can be changed, and substituted into the Ideal gas law to find the molar mass. The equation goes from PV=nRT to M=mRT/PV. Molar Mass is the mass of a given substance. It ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Socrates certainly felt strongly about his beliefs as he was willing to die for them and eventually did. But was it really worth losing his life over? If so, will examining life make you happier? Life is worth examining, although doing so will not always make people happy. The question then is why is it worth examining? It is simple; the purpose of human beings is to grow to be better, something that cannot be achieved if we do not examine life. Even though we do not know what our purpose in life is, as a whole it can be agreed that humans seek to improve themselves. Thinking back to human ancestral species the Homo erectus it is understood that they did not simply accept the world for what was in front of them. Rather, when opportunity for discovery was presented to them they set forth to it. For example, when early hominin species discovered fire they did not simply walk away and accept the fact that it was a part of nature and should therefore be left to be. Instead they questioned this aspect of nature and through further examination were able to tame fire, an element that has long been credited for the rise of human species. Certainly it was well worth it for human ancestors to have examined life. Although in that situation it brought happiness, this will not always be the case, allow me to elaborate. Genocide and war share many common causes such as desperation brought on by a declining economy. Many think that U.N. involvement is necessary to stop the escalating violence in the Central African Republic; others believe that the dismal track record of the U.N. in similar situations makes it unlikely that they could be effective in the current crisis. There have been a number of genocides outside of Africa in the 20th century to include: the holocaust of World War II brought on by Adolf Hitler in which approximately six million Jews were killed, the Holodomor in the Ukraine under Josef Stalin with a Ukrainian population reduction of as much as 25 percent, and the massacre in Cambodia under Pol Pot with around two millions Cambodian deaths. Within Africa, from April 6 to July 15, 1994, a barbaric act of genocide took place in Rwanda before the very eyes of the troops of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Rwanda. Hundreds of thousands of old people, women, children, and even tiny babies were hunted down and cut to pieces in every corner of this land of terror. Though it is very much illegal to take someone life within society, our state and federal government s do the very same thing we are prohibited from doing. The first section in this paper, will be discussing the reason on why our governments allow capital punishment, relating to the deterrence of crimes such as murder. The deterrence of murder and capital punishment seem to only work if you over exercise capital punishment. Such evidence provided will show the difference in states that utilize capital punishment more than other states that have not abolished the deterrence method. The second section will be discussing the retribution relating to capital punishment. It also covers unanswered questions that relate to utilizing methods of execution on innocent people. The last section covers the Eighth Amendment violation relating to cruel and unusual punishment. It also discusses some of the botched executions that have been conducted over the years. • 21. Research Paper On Coeliac Disease What is Coeliac disease? : It is where the immune system reacts abnormally to gluten (a protein found in wheat, rye, barley and oats), causing bowel damage. The villi which line the bowel become inflamed and flattened (referred to as villous atrophy). Villous atrophy reduces the surface area of the bowel which is available for nutrient absorption, this can lead to various gastrointestinal and malabsorptive symptoms. Who gets Coeliac disease? : It affects both males and females of all ages. You must be born with the genetic predisposition to develop Coeliac disease. A close relative (parent, sibling, or child) of someone with coeliac disease has about a 10% chance of also having the disease. Also environmental factors can play a major role in triggering Coeliac disease (e.g. stress). Traditional companies are accepting the mission of using new virtual technologies in their business since the use of the internet has opened larger and advantageous international markets. Proud of the costly infrastructure, traditional companies are finding themselves being eclipsed by smaller companies that have used the internet to attract new customers. In order to achieve great results, companies in today s economy are obligated to embrace the use of the internet (Markus, T. 2008). Abstract Detection and treatment of malocclusions and other dental deformities are a considerable field of work in the plan of orthodontic treatment. Severe malformations of the midface such as maxillary or mandibular deformity can be treated by the distraction and reformation of skull bones. During an operation, the appropriate bony part of the mid face is separated from the rest of the skull (osteotomy), slowly moved into the ideal position by way of a distraction device. In the current clinical practice, planning for orthodontic treatment and orthognathic surgery was based on Computed Tomography (CT) data sets. CT images are inefficient for helping the orthodontists and surgeons in treatment and surgical planning. A tool is needed to help the physicians and surgeons in the treatment planning in order to anticipate the results and give the accurate decision, in this paper there are preliminary descriptive studies on DICOM images of the skull to help the orthodontists by providing the following algorithms: Segmentation of the lower jaw (mandible), Segmentation of the upper jaw (maxilla) from CT data, Segmentation of upper teeth, each tooth and computation of mandible volume. This disorder is normally associated with symptoms including motor impairment, namely slowed movements and random muscle contractions, as well as depression and cognitive dysfunction. However, another prominent symptom that has yet to be mentioned until recently is sleep disturbance and alteration of normal circadian rhythms. It is estimated that 60 90% of HD patients have sleep issues and that nearly 60% see those issues as being factors in their overall problems (Goodman et al., 2010). However, in HD patients metabolic dysfunction is commonplace (Morton, 2013). A study using transgenic R6/2 mice, which were designed to imitate conditions similar to HD, has shown that the mice exhibit dysfunction and disconnection of the peripheral clocks from the SCN s control (Maywood et al., 2010). These mice exhibited liver function that was characterized by loss of circadian control. The liver plays a crucial role in maintaining metabolic homeostasis, so this could be a possible explanation to the metabolic dysfunction that is seen so often in HD. If the peripheral clocks are disoriented from the central rhythms, then this can result in different body systems no longer working as effectively as when they are in sync. Furthermore, research has also revealed that circadian function within the SCN is also directly affected by HD. In another study using R6/2 mice, it was found that the mice night day ratios were abnormal, revealing circadian disruption (Morton et al., 2005). In addition to their activity patterns, the mice SCN activity were also directly measured using electrodes and a clamp. After monitoring, it was found that the expression of their clock genes was severely disrupted. While knowing that circadian rhythms directly within the SCN are altered in organisms with HD is an essential step to find the most efficient treatment to normalize these organisms, it does not reveal the way in which Huntington s ... The first having to deal with women having higher verbal abilities, the second being mathematical in where men are higher and third being spatial abilities which also has men being higher. With the spatial abilities though there is evidence that women have an advantage on some tasks. Cognitive sex differences I think are more social than environmental because of things like stereotype threat in where the person knows of the stereotype and it negatively affects their performance. In the Smith and white 2012 study found that the performance of college women was worse on a math test when they heard that men do better on this type of test, but men performance also declined when they heard that Asians outperform whites. the knowledge of stereotypes has many effects on boys and girls one it makes them not try as hard because they think it is expected of them to do worse. Yes, I believe that real differences can be reduced through interventions. Johns et al (2005) found that women who were informed of the potential effects of gender based stereotype threat performed better than women who were not. The flooding lasted from late spring to fall, killing fifty two people and damaging a 100,000 homes and businesses. The cause of the flooding was a heavy winter with lots of snow and a spring season full of rain, which saturated the soil. Instead, of a hot summer, the rain kept coming and the Upper Mississippi River Basin received three and a half times its normal rain. Since it continuously rained, the water levels kept rising and many of the levees broke. The water levels stayed high for weeks destroying towns and agriculture all throughout the Midwest. One of the main issues leading up to the flood of 1993 was the failed communication and partnership between local, state, and federal governments. The federal government is in charge of floodplain management instead of the local and state government, which prevents local governments becoming involved. This form of management flaw became revealed by the amount of damage the flood made. The reason the damage was so devastating and so many people lost their homes and businesses is because the federal government failed to understand the Executive Order of 1977 and permitted building in the flood plains. After the piano man crooned that tune late into the night, he ends his performance and went to bed while the Weary Blues echoed through his head (31, 33, and 34). The truth found in Hughes paradox is demonstrated through the life giving qualities of the blues that give [the blues player] his identity, yet when he sleeps as a de animated object the blues continue to play in his head (Tracy). What progressed after it? On Saturday, March 25, 1911. At 4:25, which was 5 minutes before closing time at the Triangle Shirt Factory. The Triangle factory, owned by Max Blanck and Isaac Harris, was located on the top three floors of the Asch Building, floors 8, 9, and 10. Some cutters were smoking, even though it was prohibited. Though it is not certain, people believe that a cutter flicked a cigarette butt or hot ash, into one of the waste bins with flammable cloth in them. This incident has had great significance to this day because it highlights the inhumane working conditions. The Triangle Fire tragically illustrated that fire inspections and precautions were woefully inadequate at the time. Outraged cries calling for action to improve the unsafe conditions in workshops could be heard from every quarter, from the mainstream conservative to the progressive and union press. The role that strong unions could have in helping prevent such tragedies became clear. Workers organized in powerful unions would be more conscious of their rights and better able to obtain safe working conditions. Immediately after the fire, Triangle owners Blanck and Harris declared in interviews that their building was fireproof, and that it had just been approved by the Department of Buildings, but the building lacked the third required staircase. On December 27, twenty three days after the trial had started, a jury acquitted Blanck and Harris of any wrongdoing. Brought to court, he was fined twenty dollars, and the judge apologized to him for the imposition. Twenty three individual civil suits were brought against the owners of the Asch ... • 48. Assisted Suicide Argumentative Essay Dogs do not have many advantages over people, but one of them is extremely important: euthanasia is not forbidden by law in their case; animals have the right to a merciful death. ― Milan Kundera, The Unbearable Lightness of Being One of the most controversial topics that is being debated today, both morally and legally, is assisted suicide, sometimes known as active euthanasia. Assisted suicide is the act of directly intervening in order to end the life of a terminally ill patient (i.e. administering a large amount of sleeping pills). The word euthanasia , comes from Latin eu for good and thanatos for death (OCRT 1). Many people in this country are existing in a living death , suffering on a day to day basis. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They believe that assisted suicide crosses the moral border into government condoned killing. The Christian, Jewish, and Muslim religions all seem to strictly discourage assisted suicide, as well as all types of suicide. They stress that life is God s alone to give, and God s alone to take (Van Biema 61). Traditional Christian beliefs against suicide were first affirmed by Thomas Aquinas, a writer in the early thirteenth century. He emphasized that suicide (and assisted suicide) violates one s natural desire to live, harms other people, and that life is God s gift to give and take (OCRT 2). Not all religions are against suicide, either. Hinduism promotes the taking of one s own life instead of living with dishonor (Flanders 49). Whatever a religion may offer as it s belief about suicide, the followers of that religion do not always uphold that belief. At Masada, for example, a sect of fervently religious Jews known as Zealots held off Roman invaders for two years. When it became apparent that defeat was inevitable, their leader convinced the remaining nine hundred and sixty of them to commit suicide (Flanders 5). And Michel de Montaigne, a Christian writer living in France in the mid sixteenth century wrote five essays arguing that suicide is a matter of personal choice, and it is a viable option under some circumstances (OCRT 1). The American support of active euthanasia has been seen in national organizations ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

He was still active as grand secretary of the BLF at this time and engaged in the national debate regarding the need for a larger all encompassing railway union in place of smaller ones to advance the needs of railway workers. He believed a larger national union would be much more effective in this role. Salvatore argues that at this time Debs even began to form the idea of a all encompassing union for all laborers nationwide at this time. He retired from his role in the BLF in 1891 and organized the first national industrial union in the United States in 1893, the American Railway union or ARU. He rose to the national spotlight as the leader of the ARU when they struck on the great northern railway in 1894 and had all of their demands unconditionally granted after 18 days. This was the first large scale union victory in American history and emphasized Debs ability as a Labor leader. In 1894 Debs was confronted with his most daunting situation to date.
