Analysis Of Country Lovers By Nadine Gordiminer

2 October 2014
Comparing Racism and Ethnicity in two literature works, Country Lovers and What it s like to
be a Black Girl we can trace racism from the very first stanza of the poem What it s like to be a
Black Girl and the first paragraph of Country Lovers. In both cases the protagonists are black
females who seem to be facing racial discrimination.
Most societies have small elements of racial discrimination that can be condoned. In fact some
societies are used to racial discrimination. Racial discrimination is more pronounced in minority
communities where it is a recurrent experience. Many countries and states have enacted laws that
prohibit racism in its entirety, but the success of such laws depends on individuals who can either
heed from practicing it or just decide to be hard on others. The short story, Country Lovers written
by Nadine Gordiminer in 1975 best represents racial discrimination during colonial period. The
story revolves around two main characters Thebedi and Paulus. Paulus Eysendyck was a son to a
white settler while Thebedi was a daughter to a Laborer that used to work in Paulus father s farm.
Paulus, being the son of the rich white father had the freedom to play and interact with all other
kids that lived in the farm. But amongst many kids that he encountered, he developed keen interest
in Thebedi. A bond developed

Comparing A P And Greasy Lake
Being a teenager isn t always fun, some might say it s the worst time of their years. There are
two sorts of individuals: people who get experience from another person s imperfections, gaining
from those mistakes, and individuals who gain from their own experience, committing their
own errors. The saying Through torment comes knowledge demonstrates the absence of
development in characters of both stories. The two stories John Updike s A P and T.
Coraghessan Boyle s Greasy Lake indicate great examples of how youngsters become more
familiar with their mistakes from their backgrounds. A P is about a nineteen year old kid
working at a basic supply shop who resists the owner attempting to safeguard and awe the young
ladies who are sickeningly dressed. Though Greasy Lake is an account of a few nineteen year old
adolescents who play a trick on a terrible character and experience what genuine awful characters
can do. Both stories A P and Greasy Lake speak to a much bigger procedure of development from
juvenile to adulthood. There are a few clashes in the stories A P and Greasy Lake.... Show more

There is a disagreement between what the young ladies believe is fitting attire for the store and
what Lengel considers. The store manager chastens them, and with all due respect Sammy holds

his brave activities, he understands how hard the world would have been to [him] from now on .
There is likewise an inner clash for Sammy as to being a youngster. Sammy was all that much still

A Brief Note On Pesticides And The Environmental...
1)Rationale and References:
Neonicotinoids are important pesticides. They are used to kill a variety of pests. Many researches
have been done with neonicotinoids. Researchers have found that neonicotinoids have toxic effects
on many non target species, one example being insects. This results in reduced growth, insects have
problems reproducing and insect populations have also been declining as a result of this.
Researchers have classified the effects of the insecticides based on US Environmental Protection
Agency s ecotoxicity classification system. Three insecticides: imidacloprid, clothianidin and
fipronil all showed adverse effects on insects. There have been hundreds of scientific publications
over the last 20 years that have talked about the adverse effects of neonicotinoids on pollinating
insects. Also very low concentrations of neonics have an effect of insects.
Reason why neonicotinoid pesticides is popular in controlling pests is because of its water
solubility. Water solubility lets neonicotinoid to be applied in plants and then taken up by the
plants. This, in turn helps kill insects in plants. The first neonicotinoid, imidacloprid, can just be
sprayed on the plant. But it is more useful when it is applied to the soil instead. These insecticides
help control beetles, fleas, cockroaches and other flies.
However, there are many environmental concerns associated with the application of these
insecticides. Research has shown that it is actually toxic to bees and

Nuclear Arms are Weapons of Mass Destruction
Nuclear arms can easily be classified as weapons of mass destruction, as they destroy all
ecosystems that come in contact with it in a matter of seconds, this fairly new and evolving breed
of warfare is continuously becoming a bigger threat to society due to the fact that; the government
can turn to nuclear power if opposing countries do not comply with their needs. The Cold War was
essentially defined by nuclear weaponsand the nuclear arm race between United States and the
Soviet Union. A high degree of anxiety existed between the two superpowers and millions of
citizens around the world were put to risk by nuclear arm race. The use of these nuclear weapons
were exceedingly destructive and the consequences were so enormous that the protection of human
rights were questioned. However the use of these weapons were merely to prevent their use by
others. In other words nuclear weapons were devices of deterrence not warfighting. There was a
mutual nuclear weaponownership with both states possessing nuclear weapons, therefore the odds
of war dropped quickly. Both superpowers quickly came to the realization that nuclear war
between the two countries could lead to a devastation effect on the world which concluded the cold
war. From 1968 the only universal treaty that stops the spread of nuclear weapons is the Non
Proliferation Treaty (NPT) with about 130 members. China is a nuclear weapon state but not a
party to the treaty. Also missing are India, Pakistan, Brazil, Argentina

The Follower Problem
Are you the type of person to make decisions based off of the group you re involved with, or do
you go your own way and make your own decisions? Whether being involved in a group, or you
tend to be a follower, those certain things have a bigger influence on how someone acts, compared
to individual humanviews, that can be founded off of social psychology. Being involved with the
group, has the biggest impact on how people choose to obey or disobey certain actions because of
the societal pressure, family and religious backgrounds, and having the fear of not fitting in, or
conforming. Societal pressures have an impact on how a person can think or act. As Lee Ross
author of obedience once said, people s inflated belief in the importance of personality traits and
disposition, together with their failure to recognize the importance of situational factors in
affecting behavior (Ross, 628). The follower problem, a book written by David brooks makes
the statement these days many Americans seem incapable of thinking for themselves (Brooks,
650). Doris Lessing a claim how often we d say black was white because other people were saying

The ability to have your own thoughts and opinions have slowly gone away and have gone
towards the group opinion from societal pressures, family and religious backgrounds, to having
the fear of not conforming or fitting in. When you have one group that thinks as one and does as

An Analysis of Personality Theory
An Analysis of Personality Theory by for Everyone has a personality, of course, but until fairly
recently, there were no personality theories available to help understand what factors contribute to
its development. In recent years, though, personality theories such as McCrae and Costa s Big
Five and Schwartz s theory of basic values have been advanced for these purposes. To gain some
deeper insights into these issues, this paper presents a review of the relevant peer reviewed and
scholarly literature to provide a definition of personality and an examination of theoretical
approaches to studying personality. Finally, an analysis of those factors that may influence an
individual s personality development is followed by a summary of the research and important
findings concerning personality theory in the conclusion. Review and Analysis Definition of
Personality An individual s personality is comprised of several factors, some of which may be more
prominent at some times than others. The dictionary entry personality defines it as, the complex of
characteristics that distinguishes an individual or a nation or group; especially the totality of an
individual s behavioral and emotional characteristics (Merriam Webster, 2001, p. 1687). In this
regard, Barrick and Mount (1999) advise that, Personality may to advantage be broadly analyzed
into five distinguishable but separate factors, namely intellect, character, temperament, disposition
and temper (p. 2). Examination of

Article Summary
The article studied the effects of the oil spill from the Deepwater Horizon oil rig operated by
British Petroleum in the Gulf of Mexico on April 20, 2010. The spill released 4.9 million barrels
of oil into the Gulf of Mexico. The spill impacted hundreds of miles of marine ecosystem along the
Louisiana, Alabama, and Florida coastlines. (Cisneros Montemayor, Sumaila, Dyck, Huang,
Jacquet, Kleisner, et al, 2012, p.499) The impacts on the marine ecosystem trickled down to impact
economic functions of commercial fishing, mariculture, tourism, energy markets, and recreation.
(Cisneros Montemayor, Sumaila, Dyck, Huang, Jacquet, Kleisner, et al, 2012, p.500)
Considering the geographical located of the oil spill, the tropical system of the Gulf of Mexico
played a key role during the oil spill. Tropical systems make a great habitat for mangroves and
marshes, but these types of plants tend to suck up the oil and can retain it for long periods of time.

an important part of the operational planning process. KPIs can be broken down by acronym; by
focusing on the importance of each component of a Key Performance Indicator it will become
apparent of the role the KPI plays in the operational plan. Key when it is of fundamental
importance in gaining competitive advantage and is a make or break component in the success
or failure of the plan. An example only by measuring the shelf space gained by a drinks

indicating success or failure over the plan period. Another example for a gaol, it may be to reduce
the amount of lockdowns or assaults over the plan periods this can then provide information in
relation to the implementation of absence policies for staff and intervention programs for inmates
to achieve predetermined benchmarks. Relating to Performance when it can be clearly measured,

The Firebombing Of Hayden Character Analysis
To be able to understand how war brings out the worst in people, we need to consider how
intentional suffering toward the enemy brings out the worst in people and to what extent.
Vonnegut uses the protagonist, Billy, as a reflection on the trauma of war experienced by an
individual, and the coping mechanisms displayed by Billy, including; time travel and
withdrawing from reality into a fantasy world. The author explores post traumatic stress
throughout the text and puts it into use and gives it value in the context, enabling the reader to
experience Billy s mental chaos as a consequence of his involvement with war. Ultimately, war
can be viewed as a desperate measure of countries attempting to reach their former glory and

U.s. History And American History
US HISTORY
FINAL PAPER
Throughout the history of the United States from the 1500 s to 1865 a number of enduring motifs
played out that shaped the future of the country. This is the place in time where the origins of
racist ideologies can be traced back to the introduction of slavery to the American agricultural
system in order to justify its malicious immorality. The 1500 s also saw the infancy of the
specialization of the different regional economies of America to capitalize on what was closely
available and abundant, and scarce and needed in another region; and by the 1860 s those regional
economies had developed into behemoths that exported their products on large scales, not only
domestically but internationally as well. But the most important theme of U.S. history from the
1500 s to 1865 was expansion, from Europe to colonial America, and then the westward expansion
of the United States. I believe the theme of expansion is so integral to American history because it
incorporates elements of the previous two themes (racism and racist ideologies, and specialized
regional development) into it; the European colonial expansion is where the regional economies
and values where first developed and still exist, in some aspects, to this day. This theme is also so
important because the differing opinions on how to carry out the westward expansion of the United
States, specifically whether the new states would slave states or free states, eventually became so
contentious and

Black Students And Education Inequality
Education inequality continues as more than 140,000 students, predominantly black students, were
kept back in kindergarten in 2012. Black students are more likely to be held back, despite research
showing that holding back children does not benefit them socially or academically. Retention rates
for students increase when they come into their first year of high school. While 12 percent of black
students are held back in ninth grade, the equivalent is just 4 percent of white students (Cook).
African American students are also more likely to drop out before earning a high schooldiploma.

It is time to take action in order to relieve African American citizens of strife placed upon them
by way of inequality. There have been solutions stated to solve the given problems of lower
education, substandard housing, and disproportionate payment of the African American race as
compared, mainly, to the Caucasian race. As a way to combat lower education, it is
recommended that schools become more diverse, as opposed to always being predominantly one
race. Schools should be integrated with students of all economical and racial backgrounds, as
well as teachers being diverse for students to have an authority figure to which they may relate.
Not only do African Americans of low income need aid in a school setting, but they also need
some aid in the home setting. Many African Americans are living in poverty and to contest the
poverty that may later result in constant disciplinary action or even so far as dropping out of
school, it would be useful for the government and school system to provide more assistance.
Schools should implement extended time meant for unprivileged students to complete schoolwork,
as well as the school board paying for supplies for said students, as the students are not able to
afford them themselves. Finally, African American employees are nont granted the same pay as
their differently raced counterparts. This may be counteracted by the Paycheck,

As profits soared so did the sophistication of the market as well. It no longer is dependent on
solely making sales off the streets and in underground locations. Thanks to the development of
technology this market expanded vastly as its availability became easy to access to most and
communications between sellers and buyers become safer and faster. This is thanks to the
internet and great advances in computers. The buying and selling of illegal black market in
drugs and pharmaceuticals now heavy depends on the internet. Most transactions and sellers are
on the deep web, part of the internet a level beyond our regular use of google and such. This
provides secure and confidential communication lines by encryption of computer IP addresses
using Tor anonymizing software or web proxy to the Tor network (Van Hout, par 3). Another
benefit of it is the Bitcoin digital currency which also helps ensure that financial transactions can
not be traced. Through this process seller and buyers found an easier and safer way to do their
business. It is because of the anonymity and safer way to buy that many Americans do turn to this

I would agree in part, but not wholly. In fact, I agree that Information Technology will be
implemented into the organization in such a way that promotes and ensures organizational success
of its strategic goals, but I would have to disagree on the order between organizational strategic
goals and organizational competencies. With traditional organizational planning, most
organizations have each part (department) determine specific programs and projects to support the
organizations strategic goals. This is also known as a mix of bottom up and top down planning.
The organization creates strategic goals, disseminates it across the organizations departments and
has each department design or implement projects and programs to achieve or support the
organization with achieving those goals. Instead, if we shifted the level importance from
organizational strategic goals to the effective implementation and recognition of organizational
competencies, then it is more likely that the organization as a whole will be better aligned across
all parts (departments) and each part will more likely identify the appropriate strategic goals. In a

walking home coming from town where they had just bought a few things for themselves when
she does it again. Jem is unable to control himself, giving into his id, and destroys all the plans

Service Design And Physical Setting
Glasgow s Riverside Museum, home to over 3,000 items, has been hailed excellent , terrific and
fab by TripAdvisor reviewers (TripAdvisor, 2014). The museum offers visitors a unique
experience, where they can enjoy views of the River Clyde and the Tall Ship while they
immerse themselves in learning about Glasgow s historical past. The museum offers a unique
service experience, where the use of technology in order to enhance the visitor s experience is
prevalent. In certain areas, such as Main Street, a replica of a Glasgow street the late 19th and
early 20th century, the museum makes use of sound and lighting effects to create a particular
ambience, whereas in other areas there is a distinct lack thereof. A visit to the museum to
experience the service encounter first hand allows a critical evaluation of the encounter in terms
of the service design and physical setting. One useful way to look at service design is by use of
the servuction model (Hoffman and Bateson, 2010, p.9). The model illustrates the visible and
invisible factors which influence the customer s experience, and can aid organisations when
designing their service. The servuction model consists of visible and invisible elements, all which
have an effect on a customer s service experience, whether or not they are aware of it. One of the
visible elements identified in the servuction model is the contact personnel. These are the
organisation s front line employees who interact with visitors. On my visit to

Lao Tzu Evil
The concepts of good and evil exist within every society therefore there must exist some method
of instruction about the path to goodness. Lao Tzu, the author of the Tao Te Ching, who defines
good as having faith in the Tao to better the world and oneself, and Dante, who wrote The Divine
Comedy and defines good as faith the way of heaven and hell and in the punishments of sinners,
take very different approaches to defining the path to virtuousness. Lao Tzu defines what is good
and focuses on the reward of achieving that goodness, while Dante defines the good by
exemplifying the bad to inspire fear through the prospect of punishment. In the model of good
versus evilone can focus on achieving good or avoiding evil by setting an example that appeals to
peoples interest in bettering their own lives or in bettering their society. The good as defined by
Lao Tzu can be more effectively and universally achieved through a system of reward that defines
the good such as is done in the Tao Te Chingrather than using a system of punishment that defines
good by exemplifying the bad through the sinners as Dante does. While both texts appeal to self
interest in their teaching of how attain virtue, Lao Tzu widens his argument to consider the desire of
people to better their society as well as themselves which is more accurate to the nature of people.
Dante suggests that the natural empathy of humans is hindering and must be eliminated, but that
view goes against human instinct as it is

Charitable Deduction Essay
Issues: Are there any restrictions that apply to charitable deductions of old clothes and household
items that you, Clarence, intend to deduct? Answer: The applicable restrictions that will be

convention, association of churched, educational organization, a private foundation shall be
allowed to the extent that the total contributions does not exceed 50% of the taxpayer s adjusted
gross income (AGI). IRC В§170(f)(16)(A) states that an individual is not allowed a deduction for
any contribution of clothing or household item unless such item is in good used condition or
better. However, IRC В§170(f)(16)(C) provides an exception to this general rule, stating that if the

В§170(f)(11)(F) specifies that similar items of property donated to one or more donees shall be

The performance of a specific program is not related on errors in code. The errors which occurred
during the execution will be noticed, but the compatibility is another issue that reduces the software
performance.
5.2 The Main Aim of Testing
The main aim of testing is to analyze and examine the performance of a software and to evaluate the
errors that occurred during the execution of a software, when the software is running with different
inputs in different environment. There are different types of testing which are as follow.
Unit testing
Validation testing
Output testing
Integration testing
User acceptance testing
White box testing and Black box testing
5.2.1 Unit Testing In this type of testing the one, one and small part of program is testing and find
the errors during this testing when the errors found and highlight the errors and later fix these
errors. The testing of this type is easy and take less time. When this step of testing is completed
then the next step of testing is performed.

Pros And Cons Of Year-Round School
Around 3,181 schools over our country have all year round schooling. Some people feel that year

A traditional school year is what most of us are use to. Some of the main pros to this type of

Theme Of Justice in The Big Sleep and The Black Cat Essay
The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler and The Black Cat by Edgar Allen Poe both approach the
theme of justice and present it in dissimilar ways. The Big Sleep presents justice as something
which you can achieve through beliefs and morals, without the use of money and crime. The Black
Cat presents justice as something which is absolute and something which you cannot escape
psychologically, a force which is inevitable.
In The Big Sleep, a conversation between Philip Marlowe and Vivien Sternwood is proceeding, in
which Marlowe is offered $15,000 to be silenced over the disappearance of Rusty Regan, and
within the conversation the reader is given an insight into the motivations and morals of Marlowe,
and his own personal view of the topic in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Whether it is perceived as irony or outright sarcasm, Marlowe reveals he does his job for the
money , which is only $25 per day, but then later refuses to accept the offer of $15,000 despite
the fact that he knows he could own a home and a new car and four suits of clothes...even take a
vacation . The refusal shows Marlowe s anti heroic status, as he appreciates the advantages of
corruption but believes the well being of his client and ... to protect what little pride a broken and
sick old man has left in his blood is more important. Edgar Allen Poe s tales usually contain
graphic imagery and themes of fear and horror, all shown in The Black Cat. In this extract, as it
written in a narrative form it shows the true psychological struggle between the narrator and their
demons as it explores the criminal mind from a first person point of view, noticing both character
and motivation.
The aspects of justice shown in The Black Cat are Criminal Justice and the ideology of Religious
Justice. Unlike The Big Sleep, the Criminal Justice System of the 19th century was much more
ruthless in that even the narrator is aware his actions will get recognised and punished, an action
which appears inevitably. Revealed later on, the narrator explains that he has been consigned to the
hangman, an act of Criminal Justice upon the narrator.

Brief Analysis Of John Steinbeck s Life And Work
John Ernst Steinbeck Jr. was born on February 27, 1902 in Salinas, California. He was one of
three children, and the only male, born to John Ernst Steinbeck (father) and Olive Hamilton
(mother). Growing up, John s family lived in a small town where he would spend his summer
working on farms and ranches. Working on the farm gave him inspiration to write about the
scenery, and many times, he would write whenever he had free time in the laboratory of
Spreckels Sugar Company. Seeing the migrant workers also gave John an opportunity to see the
hardships and troubles that many go through just to stay in the United States, and he would use
this to create stories later on in life Upon graduating high school, John decided to attend Stanford
University to study English Literature. However, despite his time there, John was unable to earn
a degree and was forced to look for work. New York City was his first destination, but unable to
publish anything there, John moved back to California, where he would meet his first wife, Carol,
while working as a tour guide and caretaker in Lake Tahoe. Eventually, in 1929, John was able to

The Assassination Of John Brown
There are many definitions of terrorism and no one can be completely certain what it really
means. Despite his actions at Pottawatomie Creek and Harper s Ferry, John Brown certainly had
legitimate reasons to carry out his attacks. Throughout his childhood, John had learned to be
against slavery. His father was a deeply religious man who believed owning people was against
God s word. Even as a child and teenager John was mature, enough to be an adult. So when he
saw slaves beaten by their owners, he knew it was wrong. As a teenager, John proceeded to
become closer to the lord. Soon John was an adult and still believed that slaverywas wrong. The
murder of Elijah P. Lovejoy set John over the edge and he vowed that he would end slavery. In the
years that followed, John Browns vow became unfulfilled. Despite his concern on slavery, John had

free black man. Having no remorse over the dead, John kept tromping onward. He took over
Harper s Ferry as planned but no slaves came to help. In fact, the slaves were among the ones to
be horrified at John s actions. Eventually, the military came and wiped out all of John s men
including two of his sons. John was captured and had to be brought on a stretcher to his hearing.
They announced him guilty of all his crimes and he was later sentenced to be hanged. John s
actions caused a ripple throughout the north. Northerners looked up to him as a hero. He inspired
the north to make their moves to stop slavery. He showed them that if one man can stand up to

How Did Structural Concepts Influence The Use Of Advocacy...
Introduction The King County Library System is the fifth largest library system in circulation in
the United States. The current director of the KCLS, Bill Ptacek, started with the organization
three years ago and is in the process of working towards a new strategic plan titled The Year 2000
Plan, which has a long term goal of integrating all the resources of the library system equally and
to coordinate all the efforts to ensure it was providing the best possible service to the community.
In the three years, Ptacek worked to expand the mission to cover services for the community to
include children, life long learning, career development, and literacy (case study, 1996, pg.2) The
reworking of the mission and services of KCLS was in full swing, but there were still many
organizational issues dealing with advocacy, encouraging public service motivation, and both
human resource and structural problems.
Explain the use of advocacy inquiry, or lack thereof that occurred throughout the case. How did
structural concepts influence the use of advocacy and inquiry? Bolman and Deal (2013) define
advocacy as including statements that communicate what an individual actually thinks, knows,
wants or feels and inquiry as seeks to learn what others think, know, want or feel, (pg. 167). The
case study exemplifies instances of employees voicing their feelings on issues, but few occasions
where upper management inquired about the feelings of employees on changes to services and

Reflective Essay On Faith In Life
Is there really a God? Is it possible that there is a superior being watching over us? It seemed
farfetched to me when I was younger. I asked myself these question growing up. I never bought
into the thought of believing in a God as a kid. That was until I faced adversity in my life. I turned
to my faithin hard times. Religionis a crutch. When you are wounded, you often need a crutch.
The crutch symbolizing faith, and the wounded leg embodies the problems we face in life. In my
life, I have learned that faith has been side by side with me for my existence and through tough
times. Life can get hard, but when you stand by your faith when dodging obstacles it makes it
much easier. That is how faith can help overcome obstacles.
Looking back, religion had played a key role in my life. Picking me up when I was thrown to the
ground and helping me grow for the obstacles I would face later in life. I recall a moment when I
was about 7 years old. At the time my parents were going through a rough patch in their
marriage. It was a hard time for myself and our family. Their non stop quarrel would push me
past my breaking point. I couldn t handle it. The thought of them splitting up always ran a shiver
down my spine. I distinctly remember this one night when they would not stop yelling. At that
age, I couldn t handle it. Tears filled the sockets of my eyes. I needed someone to talk to. I called

A Character Analysis Of The Character Of Scrooge
Scrooge is an overly grumpy, greedy, curmudgeon, mild, insensitive, thoughtless, dolorous,

According to the text the first of spirits Scrooge met was the past. When the first of the three

lesson that Scrooge learns is that never let good time with family and friends pass by. A
example from the text that it was tragic for Scrooge was that the text said said Remove me,

Getting Out Of A Sound Of Squealing Brakes
The familiar sound of squealing brakes signaled the beginning of the best part of my night.
Getting out of the house, without a sound, was the tricky part. If I timed it just right, I could use
the car s engine to my advantage and cover the creak from the door. Once I was outside, I was in
the clear. I scampered over to the XL white Suburban and gingerly climbed into the passenger
seat. My mom sat inside, listening to soft jazz, decompressing from a long day s work as a nurse
in the ICU. As with most nights, she feigned annoyance before excitedly walking me through the
events at the hospital. Some nights were filled with triumphant saves, others drowned in an
untimely loss. The stories varied, yet a central idea remained: take care of the person instead of the
patient. In my youth, her stories registered at face value. All too soon, I would see the truth in her
words firsthand.
It started with a dull ache through my left ear immediately following diving practice. A number of
weeks passed, allowing the ache to progress to a stabbing pain. My family grew concerned with my
discomfort, culminating in a visit to an otolaryngologist. It took Dr. C only a moment to confirm
what my pediatrician had suspected. I had a tumor. Any other physicianwould have referred to it as

This lack of food coupled with a poisoned environment ultimately lead to rapidly spreading
diseases popping up globally along with mass starvation of epic proportions. Between the wars and
the planet slowly dying, a decline in the global population took place that the world had not seen

the point where it was on the verge of making mankind extinct. With the loss of such a large chunk

damaging the environment. And, the loss of population also meant a loss of workers which had a
devastating effect on industry and those manufactures that supplied the war machines. This resulted
in rapidly failing of economies throughout the globe which then ultimately birthed the complete

Minimum Wage Should Be Raised For A Better Standard Of Living
Vamsi Sanagala

Dec 15 2014
English 1
Minimum Wage Almost 3.3 out of 76 million workers in the US receive minimum wage (Source:
BLS reports). Activists for raising the minimum wage claim that the federal minimum wage of
$7.25 is the reason they are living in poverty, and that the wage must be raised for a better standard
of living. Many people who take on minimum wage jobs are young and work in companies that don

reports). On the other side of the issue, there are claims that raising the minimum wage will actually
have more drawbacks than benefits such as hurting the economy (Opposing Viewpoints). The ...

These effects can be seen as a boost to the economy because those 28 million workers would
make use of their extra money, and put it back into the ever flowing economy. This action by the
workers would lead to an overall estimated 35 billion dollar increase (Cap Action). Raising the
minimum wage would also help lessen the disparity of income that often occurs. I think many
people can agree that some jobs pay way too much, as opposed to other jobs. By raising the
minimum wage just a little, the workers can feel more needed and potentially increase
productivity (Cap Action). People also believe that by ensuring a fair wage distribution, affluent
people would have less trouble relating to poorer folk, and vice versa. Raising the minimum
wage would reduce unemployment, which is a problem some 4% of Americans today suffer
from (Pew Research). This statement is backed up by the fact that previous states that raised
minimum wage have generally seen an increase in offered jobs (Cap Action). Raising the
minimum wage would also minimally affect other prices of things, which would not lead to
problems in the overall scheme of things (Cap Action). It is stated that the price of a CD would
be raised by just one cent to compensate for a minimum wage increase. An increase would also let
3.5 million workers who use food stamps to be able to purchase their own food, which would not
only help them, but also help the

  • 2. Analysis Of Country Lovers By Nadine Gordiminer Themes Corresponding Works (Draft) Ja Anna Godine ENG 125 Introduction to Literature Instructor Kurt Mueller 2 October 2014 Comparing Racism and Ethnicity in two literature works, Country Lovers and What it s like to be a Black Girl we can trace racism from the very first stanza of the poem What it s like to be a Black Girl and the first paragraph of Country Lovers. In both cases the protagonists are black females who seem to be facing racial discrimination. Most societies have small elements of racial discrimination that can be condoned. In fact some societies are used to racial discrimination. Racial discrimination is more pronounced in minority communities where it is a recurrent experience. Many countries and states have enacted laws that prohibit racism in its entirety, but the success of such laws depends on individuals who can either heed from practicing it or just decide to be hard on others. The short story, Country Lovers written by Nadine Gordiminer in 1975 best represents racial discrimination during colonial period. The story revolves around two main characters Thebedi and Paulus. Paulus Eysendyck was a son to a white settler while Thebedi was a daughter to a Laborer that used to work in Paulus father s farm. Paulus, being the son of the rich white father had the freedom to play and interact with all other kids that lived in the farm. But amongst many kids that he encountered, he developed keen interest in Thebedi. A bond developed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Comparing A P And Greasy Lake Being a teenager isn t always fun, some might say it s the worst time of their years. There are two sorts of individuals: people who get experience from another person s imperfections, gaining from those mistakes, and individuals who gain from their own experience, committing their own errors. The saying Through torment comes knowledge demonstrates the absence of development in characters of both stories. The two stories John Updike s A P and T. Coraghessan Boyle s Greasy Lake indicate great examples of how youngsters become more familiar with their mistakes from their backgrounds. A P is about a nineteen year old kid working at a basic supply shop who resists the owner attempting to safeguard and awe the young ladies who are sickeningly dressed. Though Greasy Lake is an account of a few nineteen year old adolescents who play a trick on a terrible character and experience what genuine awful characters can do. Both stories A P and Greasy Lake speak to a much bigger procedure of development from juvenile to adulthood. There are a few clashes in the stories A P and Greasy Lake.... • 4. A Brief Note On Pesticides And The Environmental... 1)Rationale and References: Neonicotinoids are important pesticides. They are used to kill a variety of pests. Many researches have been done with neonicotinoids. Researchers have found that neonicotinoids have toxic effects on many non target species, one example being insects. This results in reduced growth, insects have problems reproducing and insect populations have also been declining as a result of this. Researchers have classified the effects of the insecticides based on US Environmental Protection Agency s ecotoxicity classification system. Three insecticides: imidacloprid, clothianidin and fipronil all showed adverse effects on insects. There have been hundreds of scientific publications over the last 20 years that have talked about the adverse effects of neonicotinoids on pollinating insects. Also very low concentrations of neonics have an effect of insects. Reason why neonicotinoid pesticides is popular in controlling pests is because of its water solubility. Water solubility lets neonicotinoid to be applied in plants and then taken up by the plants. This, in turn helps kill insects in plants. The first neonicotinoid, imidacloprid, can just be sprayed on the plant. But it is more useful when it is applied to the soil instead. These insecticides help control beetles, fleas, cockroaches and other flies. However, there are many environmental concerns associated with the application of these insecticides. Research has shown that it is actually toxic to bees and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Nuclear Arms are Weapons of Mass Destruction Nuclear arms can easily be classified as weapons of mass destruction, as they destroy all ecosystems that come in contact with it in a matter of seconds, this fairly new and evolving breed of warfare is continuously becoming a bigger threat to society due to the fact that; the government can turn to nuclear power if opposing countries do not comply with their needs. The Cold War was essentially defined by nuclear weaponsand the nuclear arm race between United States and the Soviet Union. A high degree of anxiety existed between the two superpowers and millions of citizens around the world were put to risk by nuclear arm race. The use of these nuclear weapons were exceedingly destructive and the consequences were so enormous that the protection of human rights were questioned. However the use of these weapons were merely to prevent their use by others. In other words nuclear weapons were devices of deterrence not warfighting. There was a mutual nuclear weaponownership with both states possessing nuclear weapons, therefore the odds of war dropped quickly. Both superpowers quickly came to the realization that nuclear war between the two countries could lead to a devastation effect on the world which concluded the cold war. From 1968 the only universal treaty that stops the spread of nuclear weapons is the Non Proliferation Treaty (NPT) with about 130 members. China is a nuclear weapon state but not a party to the treaty. Also missing are India, Pakistan, Brazil, Argentina ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Whether being involved in a group, or you tend to be a follower, those certain things have a bigger influence on how someone acts, compared to individual humanviews, that can be founded off of social psychology. Being involved with the group, has the biggest impact on how people choose to obey or disobey certain actions because of the societal pressure, family and religious backgrounds, and having the fear of not fitting in, or conforming. Societal pressures have an impact on how a person can think or act. As Lee Ross author of obedience once said, people s inflated belief in the importance of personality traits and disposition, together with their failure to recognize the importance of situational factors in affecting behavior (Ross, 628). An Analysis of Personality Theory An Analysis of Personality Theory by for Everyone has a personality, of course, but until fairly recently, there were no personality theories available to help understand what factors contribute to its development. In recent years, though, personality theories such as McCrae and Costa s Big Five and Schwartz s theory of basic values have been advanced for these purposes. To gain some deeper insights into these issues, this paper presents a review of the relevant peer reviewed and scholarly literature to provide a definition of personality and an examination of theoretical approaches to studying personality. Finally, an analysis of those factors that may influence an individual s personality development is followed by a summary of the research and important findings concerning personality theory in the conclusion. Review and Analysis Definition of Personality An individual s personality is comprised of several factors, some of which may be more prominent at some times than others. The dictionary entry personality defines it as, the complex of characteristics that distinguishes an individual or a nation or group; especially the totality of an individual s behavioral and emotional characteristics (Merriam Webster, 2001, p. 1687). In this regard, Barrick and Mount (1999) advise that, Personality may to advantage be broadly analyzed into five distinguishable but separate factors, namely intellect, character, temperament, disposition and temper (p. 2). • 12. U.s. History And American History US HISTORY FINAL PAPER Throughout the history of the United States from the 1500 s to 1865 a number of enduring motifs played out that shaped the future of the country. This is the place in time where the origins of racist ideologies can be traced back to the introduction of slavery to the American agricultural system in order to justify its malicious immorality. The 1500 s also saw the infancy of the specialization of the different regional economies of America to capitalize on what was closely available and abundant, and scarce and needed in another region; and by the 1860 s those regional economies had developed into behemoths that exported their products on large scales, not only domestically but internationally as well. But the most important theme of U.S. history from the 1500 s to 1865 was expansion, from Europe to colonial America, and then the westward expansion of the United States. I believe the theme of expansion is so integral to American history because it incorporates elements of the previous two themes (racism and racist ideologies, and specialized regional development) into it; the European colonial expansion is where the regional economies and values where first developed and still exist, in some aspects, to this day. This theme is also so important because the differing opinions on how to carry out the westward expansion of the United States, specifically whether the new states would slave states or free states, eventually became so contentious and ... As a way to combat lower education, it is recommended that schools become more diverse, as opposed to always being predominantly one race. Lao Tzu, the author of the Tao Te Ching, who defines good as having faith in the Tao to better the world and oneself, and Dante, who wrote The Divine Comedy and defines good as faith the way of heaven and hell and in the punishments of sinners, take very different approaches to defining the path to virtuousness. • 31. Theme Of Justice in The Big Sleep and The Black Cat Essay The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler and The Black Cat by Edgar Allen Poe both approach the theme of justice and present it in dissimilar ways. The Big Sleep presents justice as something which you can achieve through beliefs and morals, without the use of money and crime. The Black Cat presents justice as something which is absolute and something which you cannot escape psychologically, a force which is inevitable. In The Big Sleep, a conversation between Philip Marlowe and Vivien Sternwood is proceeding, in which Marlowe is offered $15,000 to be silenced over the disappearance of Rusty Regan, and within the conversation the reader is given an insight into the motivations and morals of Marlowe, and his own personal view of the topic in ... The aspects of justice shown in The Black Cat are Criminal Justice and the ideology of Religious Justice. Unlike The Big Sleep, the Criminal Justice System of the 19th century was much more ruthless in that even the narrator is aware his actions will get recognised and punished, an action which appears inevitably. He was one of three children, and the only male, born to John Ernst Steinbeck (father) and Olive Hamilton (mother). Growing up, John s family lived in a small town where he would spend his summer working on farms and ranches. Working on the farm gave him inspiration to write about the scenery, and many times, he would write whenever he had free time in the laboratory of Spreckels Sugar Company. Seeing the migrant workers also gave John an opportunity to see the hardships and troubles that many go through just to stay in the United States, and he would use this to create stories later on in life Upon graduating high school, John decided to attend Stanford University to study English Literature. However, despite his time there, John was unable to earn a degree and was forced to look for work. New York City was his first destination, but unable to publish anything there, John moved back to California, where he would meet his first wife, Carol, while working as a tour guide and caretaker in Lake Tahoe. Despite his actions at Pottawatomie Creek and Harper s Ferry, John Brown certainly had legitimate reasons to carry out his attacks. Throughout his childhood, John had learned to be against slavery. His father was a deeply religious man who believed owning people was against God s word. Even as a child and teenager John was mature, enough to be an adult. So when he saw slaves beaten by their owners, he knew it was wrong. As a teenager, John proceeded to become closer to the lord. Soon John was an adult and still believed that slaverywas wrong. The current director of the KCLS, Bill Ptacek, started with the organization three years ago and is in the process of working towards a new strategic plan titled The Year 2000 Plan, which has a long term goal of integrating all the resources of the library system equally and to coordinate all the efforts to ensure it was providing the best possible service to the community. In the three years, Ptacek worked to expand the mission to cover services for the community to include children, life long learning, career development, and literacy (case study, 1996, pg.2) The reworking of the mission and services of KCLS was in full swing, but there were still many organizational issues dealing with advocacy, encouraging public service motivation, and both human resource and structural problems. Explain the use of advocacy inquiry, or lack thereof that occurred throughout the case. How did structural concepts influence the use of advocacy and inquiry? Bolman and Deal (2013) define advocacy as including statements that communicate what an individual actually thinks, knows, wants or feels and inquiry as seeks to learn what others think, know, want or feel, (pg. 167). Getting out of the house, without a sound, was the tricky part. If I timed it just right, I could use the car s engine to my advantage and cover the creak from the door. Once I was outside, I was in the clear. I scampered over to the XL white Suburban and gingerly climbed into the passenger seat. My mom sat inside, listening to soft jazz, decompressing from a long day s work as a nurse in the ICU. As with most nights, she feigned annoyance before excitedly walking me through the events at the hospital. Some nights were filled with triumphant saves, others drowned in an untimely loss. The stories varied, yet a central idea remained: take care of the person instead of the patient. In my youth, her stories registered at face value.
