Symbols In The Fall Of The House Of Usher
The house is alive. It possesses its own malign will. (Bailey) A house can hold a slew of symbolic
meanings. It may represent an ancient family line and it may also be a physical structure. Usually, it s
referred to as a habitable place, warm, safe and comforting. Home, sweet, home. Yet, there are times
in which, home, is not habitable, warm, safe or comforting. This is just the case of Roderick Usher.
Edgar Allen Poe writes Usher as the victim in, what would be considered in modern times, a haunted
house story. The Fall of the House of Usher can theoretically be consider the original haunted house
story. What is a house is haunted, especially what is the meaning of this in The Fall of the House of
Usher?(Usher) Essentially, a haunted house is one that scares, meaning the house itself scares. The
Fall of the House of Usher, demonstrates the importance of setting to gothic literature through
establishing mood, location and situation, exposing the reader and creating vivid mental pictures of
the story s world. When a literary piece establishes setting, mood, plays an important role in
describing the situation in which a reader is mentally placed. In gothic literature, like, Usher, mood is
responsible for conveying the feeling of dread. During the whole of a dull, dark, and soundless day in
the autumn of the year, when the clouds hung oppressively low in the heavens. (293, line 1 3) Poe s
first line of Usher is used to unsettle the reader by simply describing the day as dark

How Does Shakespeare Make A Good Character In Romeo And...
To have a good play their must be good characters. Throughout Romeo and Juliet, the characters make
choices and decisions to make the plot more interesting. In Shakespeare s Romeo and Juliet,
Shakespeare uses juxtaposition, paradoxes, and oxymoron to make his characters more complex and
meaningful in their actions and their personality
Juliet, the daughter of Lord and Lady Capulet, is sheltered by her family, making her naive. Because
Juliet does not know much about people, she only judges people from what she sees on the outside.
Juliet says, Was ever book containing such vile matter/ so fairly bound? (3.2.83 84). Since Juliet is so
kept away from most of society, she has bad judgement of people from lack of experience. Romeo, in
her eyes, is a handsome man who has been corrupted because he has killed her cousin Tybalt, ... Show

During the scene when the nightwatch is coming to the Capulet s tomb, Friar Lawrence shows how
much he does not want to be caught by the guard. Stay not to question, for the watch is coming./
Come, go, good Juliet. I dare no longer stay (5.3.158 159) . Because he does not want to be a suspect
in the death of Romeo, the Friar leaves, showing how he is cautious. When Romeo confronts Friar
Lawrence, the Friar tells Romeo, In one respect I ll thy assistant be;/ for this alliance may so happy
prove/ to turn your households rancor to pure love (2.4.90 92). With only a little persuasion, Romeo
convinces Friar Lawrence to wed them. The rash decision made by the friar has deadly consequences
later. Shakespeare uses several types of language to create complex characters who display
meaningful actions and feelings. Throughout the story of Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare uses these
types of language constantly, to make the play more interesting. The complex characters in any play

The chapter examines the background of the study, statement of the problem, objectives of the study,

SOS Children s Village is a private non political social welfare organization whose primary goal is to
provide permanent homes and education to orphaned and abandoned children. SOS Children s

Such arrangements challenge both our legal and social definitions of organizations as business
practice outpaces legal and regulatory policy especially in areas such as internal competitiveness and
trade, intellectual property, privacy, security, family, community, education and culture (Applegate,
2003).
These rapid changes call for rapid, revision and overhaul of HR strategies. The HR executives have a
big challenge in ensuring that the HR strategies are tailored in such a way as to embrace these
technological advances. The types of opportunities pursued by an organization and the technology
employed strongly influence the approach taken to developing, operating and managing IT especially
in formulating and implementing HR strategies. As IT infrastructure becomes more standardized,
modular and scalable, a shift in IT investment priorities and decisions from a cost avoidance, project
centered approach to an asset based strategic option approach and these impacts on HR strategies.
The implication of IT on HR strategies is diverse since HR strategies flow from business strategies. A
business strategy such as obtaining competitive advantage leads to emerging of HR strategies e.g.
performance management, reward strategy and employee resourcing strategy. Thus ICT can be used
effectively to source, develop and retain competent employees, reward them

Perplexing Economic Welfare
In providing economic security, the United States is failing compared to the democracies of European
countries. The United States has the most inefficient welfare system in the Western world (Patterson,
2013). In the United States, it is hard for people to qualify for assistance in a public assistance
program, as the eligibility criteria can be perplexing. Many programs are complicated and have no
sliding eligibility scale. For instance, a person who makes $495 in monthly income could be eligible
to receive a specific benefit, where another person making $500 in income a month could be ineligible
(Patterson, 2013). There are many instances where people who are considered poor to society try to
qualify for a particular program but make too

A New Land Of Opportunity Summary
In both The Last Wilderness Preserve and A New Land of Opportunity , the authors give their own
arguments about how human behavior and actions impact Antarctica. The passage The Last
Wilderness Preserve argues that human behavior and actions have an extremely negative impact on
Antarctica, therefore humans should not be allowed on such precious land. Contradictory to this, the
passage A New Land of Opportunity encourages human activity on Antarctica and believes that this
can lead to a widespread of incredible opportunities. I believe that the author of A New Land of
Opportunity presents the stronger argument because they explain the reasoning behind their claim
more effectively. Based off of the information given from each passage, I believe that the author ...

Creole Hybridity in Literature
Jamaican patois is not an official language, which is the same for most if not all languages are not,
although recently, there are some creole dictionaries and Haitian Creole is being taught in schools.
People tend to have a negative perception of a creole and thus, the people who speak and chose to
write in this creole language are often lumped into a box. There is a stigma attached to it, and people
often say that it is the language of the poor lower class of the country. Growing up in St. Lucia, I saw
how this is true, people are often embarrassed by their parent who spoke creole, or they as children
where forbidden to speak creole as to avoid being stereotyped. The language expresses the history of
the Caribbean and the hybridity that emerges through language. In the diaspora, people depend on
creating a space of home in the host country and language is an important part of this space. The
connection immigrants feel when they come into contact with literature that features a language of
their native homeland offers them their own space in the literary world, and a way for their stories to
be told. The writers and people who use creole are confirming their identities as a merger of multiple
influences. They use the language despite the stigma and fight to maintain the culture by doing so
language is part of one s identity. Wordy, Worldly Women Poets: Louise Bennett, Lorna Goodison and

Carol Stack’s Call to Home Essay
Progress and individualism are very much celebrated in American culture. Many people migrate to
urban cities in the search of economic prosperity and to achieve the elusive American Dream. City life
can often come as a shock to individuals not accustomed to a fast paced lifestyle; conversely it can
change a person. Such change can transform a person to lose the values and beliefs they were raised
with which consequently attribute to losing the bonds that they once held with their families. This is
not the case with the families portrayed in Carol Stack s ethnography Call to Home. The book depicts
Southern African American families living in rural, North and South Carolina s towns which migrate
to northern urban cities for economic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While in the north, individual s sustained close bonds with their families and home. The adults often
flocked home during summer vacations or whenever possible. Moreover the children were key players
in maintaining close relations between the families in the North and South. Children were often sent to
the South for summer vacations, semesters during the school year and some for most of their
childhood when their parents moved away. It was not that parents did not want to take them but it was
that they wanted the grandparents to raise their children as to instill and not lose sight of family values
(Stack, 1996). Although most children were left for grandparents to rear, the children and the young
adults were also caring for the elderly by helping them cope with ailments due to old age. In turn the
adults in the north were helping their communities back home by sending their hard earned money.
Family values and traditions are very important in maintaining social bonds in African American
families. In addition, it is clear that African American families are matrifocal and matriarchal.
Matrifocality is present in Burdy s Bend Miss Pearl is a great example (Stack, 1996), in the film The
Language You Cry In, and as discussed in Dr. Stevenson s in class lecture (J. Stevenson, personal
communication, November 18, 2013). The community members in Burdy s Bend, all knew they could
count on Miss Pearl whenever they needed help. As noted

Case Study Of Brooke Shields Essay
Case Study Individual: Brooke Shields Actress Brooke Shields was born in 1965 in New York City,
and has been in the limelight ever since she was 11 months old, she acted in movies since she was a
teenager, modeled for Calvin Klein, and even graduated from Princeton University with a bachelor s
degree in French Literature. Shields was married to Andre Agassi, a professional tennis player, but the
two split inn 1999 the same year she met her current husband Chris Henchy, a television writer, with
whom she has two daughters with.
Diagnosis:
Brooke was diagnosed with severe postpartum depression. Postpartum depression is something that
not only mothers but fathers may also experience after the birth of a child. It is more common for new
mothers to go through this depression within the first four weeks after childbirth, in some cases it may
not be present until six months after birth. Postpartum depression can affect all women and about half
of the women diagnosed with PPD have never experienced depression, but 1 in 7 women are
diagnosed with PPD.
History of Presenting Problem: The history of the presenting problem was Brooke s past experience
with pregnancy and also the way that she was behaving and feeling towards her daughter that her and
her husband wanted so dearly. I couldn t hold the baby, I couldn t do anything for the baby, I couldn t

Themes In Tao Te Ching
The ideas presented in the Tao Te Ching are similar to those of the Bhagavadgita in many ways. There
is an emphasis on ridding oneself of worldly desires so that one can have self control over their own
senses since Conquering yourself is true strength (Addiss, Page 33). The Tao suggests that creating
order can be good, as long as one eventually allows the creation to undergo its own journey and not
try to dictate it. Give birth and do not possess. Excel but do not rule (Addiss, Page 10). There are
numerous references about what makes a good ruler in the Tao. I do nothing and people transform
themselves. I enjoy serenity and people govern themselves (Addiss, Page 57). The idea that when
people are left to themselves they eventually are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Throughout his life he had forsaken his goals, for the goals of the Japanese emperor. In doing so, he
had performed acts against the prisoners that he felt were morally wrong. He had always used his
powers for the sake of the empire and the emperor. His idea of his own goodness, though, was
becoming harder and harder to hold on to (Flanagan, Page 349). This quote shows that one can spend
their whole life serving a master, but at the end of life, it is not enough to follow the rules set by those
above one, but one must feel as if they attained and followed their own moral standards. The theme
present in the Tao and the Bhagavadgita that entails forsaking worldly possessions and desires would
create a more group oriented mentality and would allow all humans a basic standard of living. Instead
of having an extreme wage gap between classes, all people could have their necessities provided for. A
world in which possessions were not as highly valued would lead to less stealing, an ideal presented in
the Bhagavadgita. All these factors practiced together would lead to a more peaceful, group oriented,
non discriminatory

Lab Report Of Caffeine
Introduction
The process Sublimation is a method used to disconnect a natural product from different undesired
compounds and after that it is purified by the change of state from solid to vapor. The majority
substances, under typical states claiming climate pressure, progress its stage with a temperature rise
from solid to liquid and to gas. Meantime other compounds, like iodine and carbon dioxide
experiences sublimation at this pressure. By bringing down the temperature and pressure of a system,
we can influence change in crude caffeine. Crude caffeine is extracted from tea or coffee, our
experiment was on tea. We got 9.6g of crude caffeine and it contained some purities. It became crude
due to the lower boiling point of pure caffeine than the impurities. Therefore, pure caffeine went
through the direct change of state before the impurities. We separated and collected the caffeine from
impurities by condensing it in a closed area. To produce pure caffeine this process is used by
commercial industries in a large number of scale, but for our laboratory purposes, we performed in a
small filter flask, a rubber hose to connect to the flask and the vacuum. A conical centrifuge which
worked as glass cold finger and it was fitted into the flask with a pluro stopper.

the fastest growing part of Wal Mart, with nearly 30 percent sales growth in June, compared with the

Fur Elise Research Paper
Fur Elise, German for For Elise, is unquestionably one of Beethoven s achievements. Not only is it a
masterpiece, but it s a mystery piece. To know Beethoven, one would say the genius was
revolutionary, a true extremist. However, he was a troubled man, a musical brainiac who lost his
hearing late in life. With this said, Beethoven never heard his last pieces, including Bagatelle. Later,
Bagatelle was given its nickname, Fur Elise. Why? Well, that s the mystery. Some scholars believe Fur

Reaching For Redemption Philosophy Of Nature
Reaching for Redemption: A Philosophy of Nature
Tiffany L. Bryce
Newman University
Abstract
This paper is a detailed interpretation of the movie The Day After Tomorrow. I will be thoroughly
going through this movie and how it connects with my personal philosophy of nature. This movie is a
representation of Global Warming and the drastic effects that it can have on this Earth. Although the
movie might be greatly over exaggerated, it is meant to stir the audience and conjure up emotions and
feelings of wanting to change. I would never want to see the world come to that much turmoil, which
is why there is an urgency to act now before we see our world destroyed. The paper will include my
thoughts on the movie, other writer s contributions of thoughts on the movie and global warming, my
personal philosophy of nature and how we can redeem ourselves from our influences towards global
warming.
Reaching for Redemption: A Philosophy of Nature The movie The Day After Tomorrow opens in
Antarctica where Jack Hall a climatologist is doing research. One of his coworkers ends up making a
mistake while drilling in the ice, and causes a big crack between some of their equipment and place of
work. When I first started watching this part I thought about melting of the polar ice caps due to
global warming, I knew what this movie was going to be about. I have never watched this movie
before so I didn t know what to expect. There comes a part where Jack is meeting with

The Injuries Of The Knee Joint
The knee joint is one of many synovial joints within the human body. It is the largest joint in the body
and is known as a ginglymus, or hinge, joint involving the articulation of the femur and the tibia. A
hinge joint is a joint between two or more articulating bones, moving in only one plane. The
movements that occur at the knee are flexion and extension. The knee joint is a modified hinge joint,
therefore as well as allowing the movements of flexion and extension; the movements of internal
rotation and external rotation are possible. The knee joint has six degrees of freedom, moving in all
three planes: the frontal plane, the sagittal plane and the transverse plane. Internal rotation and
external rotation of the knee move about the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ligaments are connective tissues with the function of joining articulating bones at joints, in this case,
the femur and tibia. Fibroblasts are the cells that make up the ligaments, which are made up of
between 70% and 80% collagen. The high level of collagen gives the ligament tissue high tensile
strength. The flexibility of the ligaments comes from the elastin fibers that are in the extracellular
matrix, which counters the solid nature of the bone (Prater A.M., 2010). The ligaments of the knee
assist in controlling the movements that occur at the joint.
The collateral ligaments are positioned on each side of the joint (the medial collateral ligament on the
medial side and the lateral collateral ligament on the lateral side).
The cruciate ligaments are found deep within the knee joint. The anterior cruciate ligament attaches to
the medial and anterior aspect of the tibial plateau and on the lateral femoral condyle. The posterior
cruciate ligament attaches to the posterior aspect of the tibial plateau and the medial femoral condyle
(Johns Hopkins Sports Medicine). The names of the cruciate ligaments arise from their nature of
crossing over each other between each of their attachments and from the position of their tibial
attachments. (Palastanga Soames, 2012).
The interaction of the ACL and PCL at varying degrees of flexion accounts for some of the dynamic
stability of the knee joint (Chhabra et al. C.

Public Space Papers
I will be exploring the theme of public space first as a general concept, dissecting what the phrase
means and how it s been used in global conversation. Then, I will give a few examples of how public
space manifests itself in the world. For instance, a possible point of discussion could be the North
Carolinian act HB2 that requires individuals to use bathrooms that correspond with the sex listed on
their birth certificate, a clear discriminatory move against the trans community. Public space is a
concept integral to cities, their conception, and their development. A city is an intricate web of public
and private spaces. Navigating those spaces can be a challenge for some citizens of a city. The ever
adapting nature of the city means that, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As I have mentioned many times over, public space is so much more than just a physical area. It is a
web of complex processes and rules (written or unwritten) about who can exist where. Segregating
water fountains, relegated low income housing to certain areas, restricting trans peoples use of
bathrooms these are all clear messages that, You do not belong in this space. This space is not for you.
The personal nature of this source, being a quote from an actual trans woman who has experienced
this type of oppression, will hopefully provide both a refreshing break from the variety of academic
sources that I am including and will persuade the reader to further see the merit of the argument I am

implications of this restriction of public space can be devastating and my use of this interview will try
to capture that. Some keys terms that Ms. Cox uses that I intend to employ throughout my Literature

important terms to use in talking about the social effects that public space have the ability to determine

Mediation and Peacekeeping Agenda in International Relations
MEDIATION AND PEACEKEEPING AGENDA In International Relations, mediation and
peacekeeping are the very essence of what are international relations itself, international organizations
and regional organization like the African Union. First established by the United Nations decades ago,
it has played an outstanding role in the peaceful aim and determination of armed conflict around the
world. It was at the end of the Cold War that it mostly reached its peak as many long term conflicts
were finally coming to an end due to the political negotiations which were often broken but were
successfully applied after strong mediation and peacekeeping effort. For this thesis of the Darfur
conflict, to assess and examine the African Union s mediation and peacekeeping agenda, we must first
understand and differentiate between peacemaking and peacekeeping. Then their role in the Darfur
conflict could be analyzed and if they have had an outstanding role as in many others armed conflict.
Definition of Mediation and Peacekeeping What is mediation? What is peacemaking? Peacemaking
and mediation are deeply intertwine and cannot be defined without one another. But what is
peacemaking? Peacemaking has been defined by many scholars and critics. For Douglas Noll, an
expert in peacemaking and mediation specialized in difficult and intractable conflicts; he defined
peacemaking as a complex concept as even peace can be defined in so many ways. But however he
described peacemaking as a concept

Technology And Social Disconnection From Everyday Life
Not a wired culture, but a virtual cultural that is wired shut: compulsively fixated on digital
technology as a source of salvation from the reality of a lonely culture and radical social disconnection
from everyday life (Doheny Farina, 1996). The mobile telephone has been the most rapidly
disseminated piece of technology in world history. The first commercially available mobile devices
were available in the 1980 s, and since then have expanded exponentially. In 1994, Finland was the
world leader in terms of mobile subscribers with ten percent of the population being hooked on a
mobile contract (Wirzenius, n.d.). Over the past twenty years, these numbers have increased beyond
one s imagination. As of January 2014, ninety percent of American adults own a cell phone and over
half of those own a smartphone (Pew Research Center s Internet American Life Project, 2014). These
numbers will only increase with time as in a survey conducted by Pew Internet (2014) ninety eight
percent of adults between the ages of eighteen to twenty nine own mobile devices with numbers
decreasing slightly as the population aged. As our culture begins to shift more into the digital
revolution age we find ourselves losing vital communication skills in person to person contact. The
sight of a local Starbucks at lunch time filled with business workers and teenagers glued to their
screens more so than enjoying lunch, an adolescent playing games on their smartphone or texting and

Hip Hop And Its Impact On African American Culture
In the 70 s a new genre of music was created in South Bronx, New York. That genre is known as Hip
Hop. Over the years Hip Hop has gained popularity becoming arguably one of the most influential
forms of music to date. Hip Hop artist or Mc s used it to express their views on a multitude of topics to
their fans. These topics range wildly from the more serious subjects like the everyday life of people
living in the projects, personal obstacles they had to endure, and politics. As well as, more lighthearted
topics like enjoying your time in a night club or hanging out with friends. For those reasons, I believe
Hip Hop is representative of the African American community.
Even after 25 years hip hop has continued to reflect issues that are going on in black communities. I
think that hip hop has transformed from just a genre of music to more along the line of being a culture.

Felix Mendelssohn Symphony 4 Essay
Felix Mendelssohn s Symphony No. 4 in A Major, Op. 90 Movement 1 is in sonata allegro form. His
musical style is mostly classical with a few incorporations from the Romantic style. The theme of the
first movement is introduced with violins. The tempo is rather fast and bright which labels the first
movement as allegro vivace. The texture of the movement is created with the addition of the
woodwinds: flutes, clarinets, oboes, horns, and bassoons. The string instruments contain the melody
and the brass accompaniment being the timpani, creates the rhythm of the first movement. The
woodwinds introduce the second theme of the symphony with the accompaniment of the strings. Right
after the first theme is reintroduced, the listener is presented with the last main section of the sonata

In contrast, the tempo of Johannes Brahms Symphony No. 2 in D Major Movement 4 is fast and as
stated in Music: Our Cultural Evolution it is lively with spirit (allegro con spirito). The first theme in
the fourth movement is introduced with the brass instruments and following it are the string
instruments. The beginning of the fourth movement starts out soft, creating a peaceful atmosphere but
there is a sudden shift in the volume to being very loud (fortissimo). Even though the beginning notes
were soft, it was noticeable that they were each accented (subito forte). Although there are sudden
outbreaks within the piece that can be identified as fortissimo, Brahms is able to make the piece sound
unified. The repetition in the middle of the fourth movement strongly expresses the main idea as it is
an effort to make the listener become attentive. The texture of this movement may seem overbearing
but it pulls the piece together as a whole. The orchestra s dominating sound emphasizes the piece s
tonic key being D Major as it should in the last part of any sonata allegro

Privacy in the Workplace
Explain where an employee can reasonably expect to have privacy in the workplace.
Privacy in the workplace is very hard to get. Advancements in technology have been made that allow
companies to monitor every aspect of an employee use of their systems. This is very evident if you
have a job that involves you to be on the telephones. Companies are able to listen to each phone that is
made, see every website that you have visited and read any email you have received. For example, I
used to work at AMEX call center, and they were able to monitor each call through a system called
N.I.C.E.. Through this system the company was able to monitor my calls for quality control reasons.
However, if I made a phone call for personal reasons they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Electronic surveillance is almost a way of life in the United States. Everything from law enforcement,
military, government, banks, parking facilities and etc use electronic surveillance. It is usually put into
place to enhance the security for people and property, detect wrongful or lawful activities or the
interception of information that if let out to the public could be harmful and embarrassing to the
company. The only place within a company that I know of that you can t have surveillance is in the
restrooms. So, I think that Herman s use of surveillance is sufficient. In business you have to keep
your competitive advantage and if an insider who knows your business workings lets it out, that
business could quickly be at a disadvantage.
Explain to what extent an employer can engage in electronic surveillance of employees.
An employer can engage in surveillance of employees at almost any extent possible. As I mentioned
earlier an employer surveillance can include keystroke monitoring, reviewing emails, reviewing
instant messages, monitoring of conversations, monitoring time spent on the phones as well as the
numbers called, video surveillance, drug testing and satellite technology to monitor use of company
cars, and cell phones. As long as an employee is using their networks and their systems, cars, cell
phones and credit cards, the company can monitor you.

Character Development Scene In Godfather
The movie Godfather introduces you to the life of an Italian American mobster family, during the
prominent era of the 1940s and 1950s. The story follows the family of Don Vito Corleone where there
youngest son Michael is about to decide of he is going to join the family business or not. One can
argue that Dinner at Louis Italian Restaurant is probably one of the most memorable scenes from the
classic movie because it represent a major turning point and a crucial character development scene in
the movie for the character Michael as he decides to follow in his family business. We begin this
important scene with a car driving up to a building with neon signs, Lousi Italian Restaurant. This
establishment shot tells us where the setting takes place. With the three characters inside we get over
length haul of the restaurant. Its small dark and nearly empty. Even the props, from the dark red wine
that the waiter pours to the dark tie that Michael is wearing, reinforce the darkness of this story. The
only lighting available in from neon signs that help rame Michaels face when he talks. At the table
there s tension between Michael and Sollozz as they begin starting at each other. Mcclucksy breaks the
silence and the camera cuts to him folding his napkin in his shirt. He with the first bit of dialogue. who

Sport Specialization In Sport
Sport Specialization At a young age, children tend to start participating in sports as a way to get active
and learn both athletic as well as life skills. Their parents might start them off with one sport and then
before you know it the child is juggling a handful of sports to see, which ones they like. As these
young athletes get older, they tend to get stuck at a crossroad. The athletes are posed with the same
decision: to specialize in one sport or to continue playing all the sports they love. However, do athletes
that specialize in one sport perform better as they grow up compared to those that continue playing
multiple sports? It is important to resolve this question because there has been a rise in early youth
sport specialization over the last few years due to pressure put on athletes by their coaches and
parents, rather than a logical rationale (Myer 2015).
Often, as young athletes reach middle school and high school levels, coaches and parents tend to see
the potential these athletes have. As a result, the athletes are persuaded and or forced into quitting
certain sports to specialize in their dominant sport with hopes of achieving more success. However,
these children miss out in experiences they might have had if they didn t quit those sports. If they
choose not to quit, they are usually treated differently by their coaches. Coaches will talk to them in a
hasty manner compared to other kids or even discipline them harder, solely because the athlete didn t

Theme Of Love In City Lights
I. The one theme that connects all the films we have watched in this class is an overall theme of love
this love presents itself in many different ways. In City Lights, the love between The tramp and the
blind girl, in Central Station it is the love between two strangers, Dora and Josue, The Namesake has
the love in an arranged marriage, Children of Heaven, the love between a brother and sister, and The
Kite Runner has love between two best friends that transcends the generations. All of these movies
have very different sets of characters, plots, settings, and cultures but the one theme connecting them
all is love. This love presents itself in many different ways, but the love is present all the same.
City Lights by Charlie Chaplin took place right here in the United States and started off the semester
with a traditional view of love as a culture we often view falling in love with someone as the ideal
what everyone wants. We especially want someone to love us for who we are, not the money or things
that we have. In City Lights, the Tramp inadvertently tricks the blind girl into thinking that he has a lot
of money. However despite this deception, he loves her, he wants to do what is best for her, even if it
gets him in trouble or sends her away from him. He tries working hard to get her what she needs a
cure for her blindness. Working hard does not work out for him, and he goes to great lengths to get the
money for her, including the boxing match and asking the millionaire for help. He does this because
he loves her deeply and he wants what is best for her. The movie ends with her being able to see and
still accepting him despite the fact that he is not a millionaire. This film portrays the great American
love story putting the other person first, and loving them despite their circumstances.
Central Station from Brazil by Walter Salles depicts a different kind of love. This movie could have
been about Josue, and the love with his mother or his brothers at the end when he finds them instead it
is about the love between him and Dora, an old, sad woman with no relation to him. Throughout the
film, Dora always tries to do what she thinks is best for Josue. It is misguided at first, when she sells

Progressive Movement Research Papers
The Progressive Movement
quot;Progressive Education assumes the world changes, and that in a universe that is not particularly
concerned with ability to think straight quot; Rychard Fink
During the early 1900s, the Progressive Movement came to the forefront of what Herbert Kliebard has
called quot;the struggle for the American curriculum. quot; Progressivism consistently challenged
traditional ideals concerning the foundations upon which students education in schools was based. The
movement was greatly influenced by the writings of John Dewey, who was inspired by such known
political theorists as Vittoriano da Feltre, Campanella, Comenius, Pestalozzi, Rousseau, and Bronson
Alcott. In addition to Dewey, such prominent curriculum ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The organizational thought process that relates all experiential processes is something Dewey named
the quot;Logical Organization of Subject Matter. quot; The second principle, interaction, denotes the
concept that what was learned may possibly need revisions, adaptations, or be discarded all together
because further research has claimed it to be false. Essentially, from this standpoint, assumptions need
to be challenged in the continual search for absolute truth. Thus the interaction principle encouraged
experimentalism, verification, and reconstruction.
The Progressive Movement was at its peak in the 1930 s during the Great Depression in the United
States. Previously, in 1918, the Progressive Education Association was founded. Many who supported
the movement felt there should be less authoritarianism in the schools, an elimination of set standards
for school curriculum, and an emphasis on teaching what the pupils desired to learn. However, the
movement did have its share of critics that felt education needed a foundation of basic skills and more
discipline. By the early 1940s, such concerns came to the forefront of curriculum theorizing and the
Progressive Movement quickly lost its centrality in terms of influencing school practice.
The Progressive Movement made a lasting impact on American education in that it challenged
traditional practices in education and conceptualized the student as an individual with

Analysis Of Edwin Robinson s Poem, Richard Cory
Authors often use fictional stories to explain situations in the real world. As a result, citizens are able
to better understand the problems of society, and they are more likely to fix them. This is evident in
Edwin Robinson s poem, Richard Cory. Due to the author s use of literary devices and details in this
piece of literature, he portrays Richard Cory as a successful man. By the end of the poem, he becomes
depressed and commits suicide. This expresses the idea that looks, money, and intelligence might
seem to create happiness, but these things do not always allow individuals to enjoy life.
Initially, Robinson uses literary elements and descriptions to portray Richard Cory as a perfect
individual. For instance, the author describes the main character as richer than a king (Robinson 9).
Due to the low probability of an upper class American obtaining as much wealth as the ruler of an
entire country, this statement can be considered a hyperbole. Although this is not a true statement, it
aids readers in understanding the immense wealth that Cory has developed throughout his life. In
addition to wealth, Robinson uses various allusions and descriptions to explain Cory s physique. The
main character is said to be not only clean favored and imperially slim, but also a gentleman from sole
to crown (Robinson 3). This indicates that he is not only handsome, but also well respected. Lastly, the
author describes Cory s personality through examples of dialogue. For instance,

a term used to describe a large number of computers or a few very large servers connected to each

sometimes referred to as an internet area network. The evolution of cloud computing started by the
original concept in the 1950 s of large servers which were accessible from terminals with no real

Mostly kids do the same things what they see others doing. Elders are the one where kids learn from
and when kids will see their elders smoking cigarette, then kids would do the same thing. Like this,
public place is the area where teenagers see things every day. Kids adapt the behaviors mostly from
the environment around them. According to the surgeon general of the U.S Public Health Service,
Each day in the United States, 3,800 children under 18 smoke their first cigarette, and 1,000 others
become daily smokers (Culpepper). So, what is the cause of this smoking behavior? Why do teenagers
really want to smoke under the age of 18? Public places affect the person s behavior and activities.
People will try to do the same things what they will see in the public. (to be continued for final draft)

Religion Is A Spiritual Way Of Life
Religion is a spiritual way of life that tells you how to act in this life and ultimately affects life after
death. It is something that is completely faith based because there is no way to prove whether or not it
is real. It doesn t matter what religion you choose to follow; it is imperative to have an understanding
of other religions of the world. The knowledge of other religions gives you the understanding needed
to not be afraid of the unknown. A great example of this is after 9 11, our country was full of fear.
Anyone who looked like they were Muslim was a target of this fear. Most people were not educated
about the Islamic religion but if they had been they would have known that it did not condone
violence. It was an extremely radical group who did not represent the Muslims as a whole.
The knowledge of other religions is beneficial in your everyday interactions with people or when you

The Salem With Trials
Salem Witch Trials The 17th century was filled with mystery because of the strong beliefs in the
supernatural powers and the presence of Satan on Earth in the colonial North America. Witchcraft, the
use of magical faculties, was mainly used by the peasants with a particular charm of being associated
with the evil spirits and demons to prosper in their agricultural activities. In fact, many literatures were
written on witchcraft during that period. For instance, Joseph Glanvill in 1668, claimed to have proof
of the existence of these powers in witches and ghosts in his thesis titled Against Modern Sadducism .
Along with this thesis, other works by Cotton Mather, a minister at the Boston North Church, created
the fear among the people about the wandering and meandering of demons on Earth (Adams, 2009).
As a result, there was caution and concern among people from all quarters regarding the activity of
witchcraft and black magic. This proves the common mindset of the society and the religious views
and beliefs were blindly followed during those days; particularly when Christianity was almost occult.
In the Salem Village (currently Denver, Massachusetts), people believed that ills and misfortunes were
a result of the Devil s tricky activities. Hence, natural events such as infant deaths, failure of crops,
conflicts and friction in the society were attributed to the supernatural powers. There were numerous

going to close in those time where the business is too low. 6, Evaluating Decision * Here is the final

Mendel Paper Company
Mendel Paper Company Mendel Paper Company has been doing relatively well with the sales of
computer paper, napkins, place mats, and poster board. With more people eating out, the demand for
napkins and place mats have increased. Computer paper and poster boards have slowly increased in
demand as well. However, there is concern at the company with the fixed cost of operations. Marlene
Herbert, the plant superintendent, said, As we have automated our operation, we have experienced
increases in fixed overhead and even variable overhead. And, we will have to add more equipment
since it appears that we need even more plant capacity. We are operating over our normal capacity as it
is. (Case 2B). With the new production costs added in, will ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The break even point in units for computer paper is $52,000.00. Meaning to break even, you have to
sell $52,000.00 of units of computer paper. The margin of safety, expressed in either dollars or a
percentage, shows how much sales can be reduced without sustaining losses (Schneider, 2012). The
formula to find margin of safety in dollars is: margin of safety in dollars equals the actual (or
expected) costs minus the break even costs. So in the case of computer paper. The actual cost of
$30,000.00 minus the break even point of $52,000.00 gives you the margin of safety of $22,000.00.
Meaning you can cut the sales of computer paper by $22,000.00 and not sustain a loss. To find the
break even point for napkins, you use the same formula. The fixed cost is still $420,000.00. The
selling price of napkins is $7.00. The variable cost is $4.50. $7.00 minus $4.50 is $2.50. So then you
take $420,000.00 and divide it by $2.50 to find the breaking point of $168,000.00. The company will
have to sell $168,000.00 to break even in sales. The margin for safety for napkins is $48,000.00. This
is found by subtracting the actual or expected cost of $120,000.00 by the break even point of
$168,000.00. You can cut sales by $48,000.00 and not sustain a loss. The break even point for place
mats is $50,000.00. This is found by the selling price per unit is $12.00. The variable price per unit of
place mats is $3.60. $12.00 minus $3.60 equals $8.40. You then divide

Gender Roles In My Antonia
My Ántonia takes place in a time in which gender roles were more enforced and more commonplace
than they are today. Women were expected to take care of the children and the home, while men were
expected to earn money and work the fields. Even though these roles were such a prominent aspect of
the era, many characters worked against them. Willa Cather portrays these characters in a positive
light because of their deviations from gender roles rather than despite them.
Ántonia differs from what the perfect woman was thought to be in multiple ways. She works in the
fields just much as she works in the house, but she never expresses disdain for this fact. Rather, she
enjoys it, stating Oh, better that I work out of doors than in a house...I

Mass Movement In Eric Kushner s A Bright Room Called Day
Nowadays, mass movement is defined as an assimilation process, where people throw away their own
personal identities and follow submissively the orders of their leaders. The idea of people being
obedient to some of the cruelest orders, such as killing millions of people in the Holocaust, surprises
many people. Thus, many authors decide to find out the answer by bringing up many opinions about
the creation of the mass movement in their own books or plays for discussion. One of those authors is
Eric Hoffer, who suggests that a mass movement is created by the cooperation between the man of
words , the fanatic , and the man of actions (147). In fact, he points out that the three groups have the
same craving for something new and different that they believe can only be obtained through a
revolution. At the same time, Tony Kushner also offers his own belief on the topic through his play A
Bright Room Called Day by establishing a setting in Berlin, where people follow their own party in a
fight against the development of a Nazi government. Moreover, many characters in the play perform
somewhat similar roles to the three groups duties described by Hoffer. In fact, the characteristics of
Baz as an outsider and a man of words, Agnes as a fanatic who joins the party out of boredom, and
Zillah as a person of action who refuses to accept the Reagan government will be discussed in this
essay to identify the similarities and differences between the viewpoints of two authors about

Ancient East Asian Art From Gandhara
Ancient East Asian Art from Gandhara The Asian Art Museum located at 200 Larkin St San Francisco,
CA 94102 is filled with antiquities through the ages of Asian culture. Within the museum, in gallery
one, the showroom is filled with ancient art from East India. Particularly, ancient art from Gandhara,
strikes the audience immediately upon entry into the gallery. The Seated Buddha, dated approximately
300 500 CE, was found in the northwest area of modern day Pakistan within the Peshawar valley, once
known as the ancient region of Gandhara. (Wall Label) Images of Buddha that have been found were
all dated at least 500 years after the death of Buddha, who lived around 400 BC. Interestingly, the first
few images of Buddha all have him shown in an enlightened state of being, seated in his lotus
position, and wearing simple monk robes with one of his hands held at the chest while his fingers
turning an invisible wheel symbolizing setting in motion the wheel of the doctrine that is, preaching.
(Wall Label) The Seated Buddha sculpture has Buddha sitting on a throne with a scene depicted on the
bottom. The scene shows a princely figure in the middle with all his devotees surrounding him. This
scene depicts the Gods urging Buddha to start his path towards enlightenment. The Seated Buddha
was made with Schist, a form of dense stone that the region of Gandhara explicitly used for statues of
Buddha and religious works of art. The Seated Buddha is half human size and seated on top

Scarlet Ibis Quotes
Beyond the Ibis In the story The Scarlet Ibis by James Hurst, the Scarlet Ibis portrays how people
must learn to leave those they love alone through representing Doodle and his struggles in life. To
begin, in the middle of the story the Scarlet Ibis sits on a tree in Doodle s backyard, and his parents
think how a storm must have brought it [there] (Hurst 473). First of all, this quote shows how the
storm pushes the bird physically since it ends up in a different region from where it typically lives;
symbolizing how Brother pushes Doodle out of his comfort zone, which would represent the bird s
typical habitat. Furthermore, this push causes Doodle to perish; Brother forces Doodle too much with
his teaching, when he should be letting Doodle rejuvenate. Secondly, before the Ibis takes its final
breath, Daddy comments on how it looks tired , or maybe ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Initially, Daddy shows concern for the bird s fatal condition, and the reader can infer that he
potentially wants to help it, but the bird is already deceased, again showing how it is too late and must
be left alone. Afterwards, Brother comes back to help Doodle through his final physical test, only to
find that Doodle s death has always been imminent, and that he has now died; yet Brother tries to
wake him up or search for any life in him, but like the Ibis, it is too late for Doodle and Brother must
move on; Doodle would not want him to mourn forever. Finally, when the Ibis falls out of the tree and
dies, Brother states how even death did not mar its grace, for it lay on the earth like a broken vase of

Essay On Lobbying
Since the founding of the United States, there have been divisions between political parties and
individuals who bribe the delegates of these parties. In a capitalist country where money and politics
combine together to create the system of government functioning today a delegate run capitalist
democracy it is all too easy for interest groups and wealthy individuals or organizations to affect laws
and votes. Due to the first amendment right giving citizens a right to petition the American
government and the 1819 U.S. court case Citizens United vs. Federal Election Commission

government system this form of politics began to trend and within the past two centuries a lot had
happened. Opensecret.org released information on a timeline to expose the history of lobbying by
saying By the Gilded Age of the 1870s, the lobbying industry was in full swing, and Sam Ward was
the undisputed King of the Lobby. Ward was the pioneering social lobbyer, who dazzled members of
Congress with fancy dinners, fine wines, and conversation that often eventually won them over to his
side. However, in 1875, Ward was convicted of and admitted to bribery. In his testimony to Congress,
Ward is quoted as saying of his position as a lobbyist, I do not say I am proud but I am not ashamed of
the occupation. To show that in the Gilded Age social reformers like the suffragettes in the U.K. who
lobbied for their rights there were also a number of people who bribed politicians and this went on
until the passing of the Foreign Agents Registration Act. This act was created to prevent anti American
propaganda created by outside nations to come in during WWII. Later in 1945, a lobbying registration
act was created to make domestic lobbyists register with the Secretary of Senate and the Clerk of
House Representatives. In the 1990s the Lobbying Disclosure Act was passed a couple decades after
the Watergate Scandal with President Nixon and after the Wendtel Corporation lobby, the act was an
improvement of the 1945 law in order to prevent political

Jainism Vs Buddhism Research Paper
Jainism and Buddhism originated as orders of monks that surfaced as a result of a rebellion against
Brahmanism. Consequently, they have some residual similarities. The two factions arose between the
7th and 5th B.C. when the religious teachers rejected the entire Vedic teachings. Among the many
teachings that emerged at that time, Buddhism and Jainism were the most prolific and garnered the
most followers. However, despite their similar origins, they have differences that make each religion
distinct from the other. According to Fisher, Jainism believes that all our knowledge is relative,
conditional and partial. This relativity idea similar to the Buddhist doctrine of Dependent Origination,
which points out that all things have a relative ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By practicing yoga, the person becomes the universe, assuming the non dualistic and undifferentiated
state that existed before Indra. This state is called Nirvana or extinguishing from self in Buddhism and
Moksha or release in Jainism. In Jainism, a person in this state loses its identity and becomes freed
from the cycle of life and death. On the other hand, in Buddhism, it is the freedom from the cycle of
rebirth. The being loses its identity and become nothing. Although both Buddhism and Jainism value
life and do not advocate for taking life, Jainism has stricter rules. As opposed to Jainism, Buddhism
does not have rules against harming plants and n=animals, and it also does not consider earth and
water as living. The primary philosophy of Jainism is the concept of ahismsa or no violence (Fisher
125). Both religions understate the role of gods in people s life but instead focus on the responsibility
of an individual to create his fate as seen by the concept of karma and rebirth. These ideas were meant
to increase the emphasis on individual action as opposed to Hinduism where God plays a critical role
in a person s life and destiny. They have similarities concerning the existence of god and his nature,
nirvana, yoga, and karma. However, the differences arise in their ideas of transmigration of souls, the
extent of nonviolence and the concept of the

  • 2. Symbols In The Fall Of The House Of Usher The house is alive. It possesses its own malign will. (Bailey) A house can hold a slew of symbolic meanings. It may represent an ancient family line and it may also be a physical structure. Usually, it s referred to as a habitable place, warm, safe and comforting. Home, sweet, home. Yet, there are times in which, home, is not habitable, warm, safe or comforting. This is just the case of Roderick Usher. Edgar Allen Poe writes Usher as the victim in, what would be considered in modern times, a haunted house story. The Fall of the House of Usher can theoretically be consider the original haunted house story. What is a house is haunted, especially what is the meaning of this in The Fall of the House of Usher?(Usher) Essentially, a haunted house is one that scares, meaning the house itself scares. The Fall of the House of Usher, demonstrates the importance of setting to gothic literature through establishing mood, location and situation, exposing the reader and creating vivid mental pictures of the story s world. When a literary piece establishes setting, mood, plays an important role in describing the situation in which a reader is mentally placed. In gothic literature, like, Usher, mood is responsible for conveying the feeling of dread. During the whole of a dull, dark, and soundless day in the autumn of the year, when the clouds hung oppressively low in the heavens. Throughout Romeo and Juliet, the characters make choices and decisions to make the plot more interesting. In Shakespeare s Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare uses juxtaposition, paradoxes, and oxymoron to make his characters more complex and meaningful in their actions and their personality Juliet, the daughter of Lord and Lady Capulet, is sheltered by her family, making her naive. Because Juliet does not know much about people, she only judges people from what she sees on the outside. Juliet says, Was ever book containing such vile matter/ so fairly bound? (3.2.83 84). Since Juliet is so kept away from most of society, she has bad judgement of people from lack of experience. The HR executives have a big challenge in ensuring that the HR strategies are tailored in such a way as to embrace these technological advances. • 5. Perplexing Economic Welfare In providing economic security, the United States is failing compared to the democracies of European countries. The United States has the most inefficient welfare system in the Western world (Patterson, 2013). In the United States, it is hard for people to qualify for assistance in a public assistance program, as the eligibility criteria can be perplexing. A New Land Of Opportunity Summary In both The Last Wilderness Preserve and A New Land of Opportunity , the authors give their own arguments about how human behavior and actions impact Antarctica. The passage The Last Wilderness Preserve argues that human behavior and actions have an extremely negative impact on Antarctica, therefore humans should not be allowed on such precious land. Contradictory to this, the passage A New Land of Opportunity encourages human activity on Antarctica and believes that this can lead to a widespread of incredible opportunities. I believe that the author of A New Land of Opportunity presents the stronger argument because they explain the reasoning behind their claim more effectively. Creole Hybridity in Literature Jamaican patois is not an official language, which is the same for most if not all languages are not, although recently, there are some creole dictionaries and Haitian Creole is being taught in schools. People tend to have a negative perception of a creole and thus, the people who speak and chose to write in this creole language are often lumped into a box. There is a stigma attached to it, and people often say that it is the language of the poor lower class of the country. Growing up in St. Lucia, I saw how this is true, people are often embarrassed by their parent who spoke creole, or they as children where forbidden to speak creole as to avoid being stereotyped. The language expresses the history of the Caribbean and the hybridity that emerges through language. In the diaspora, people depend on creating a space of home in the host country and language is an important part of this space. The connection immigrants feel when they come into contact with literature that features a language of their native homeland offers them their own space in the literary world, and a way for their stories to be told. The writers and people who use creole are confirming their identities as a merger of multiple influences. They use the language despite the stigma and fight to maintain the culture by doing so language is part of one s identity. Many people migrate to urban cities in the search of economic prosperity and to achieve the elusive American Dream. City life can often come as a shock to individuals not accustomed to a fast paced lifestyle; conversely it can change a person. Such change can transform a person to lose the values and beliefs they were raised with which consequently attribute to losing the bonds that they once held with their families. This is not the case with the families portrayed in Carol Stack s ethnography Call to Home. While in the north, individual s sustained close bonds with their families and home. The adults often flocked home during summer vacations or whenever possible. Moreover the children were key players in maintaining close relations between the families in the North and South. Children were often sent to the South for summer vacations, semesters during the school year and some for most of their childhood when their parents moved away. It was not that parents did not want to take them but it was that they wanted the grandparents to raise their children as to instill and not lose sight of family values (Stack, 1996). Although most children were left for grandparents to rear, the children and the young adults were also caring for the elderly by helping them cope with ailments due to old age. In turn the adults in the north were helping their communities back home by sending their hard earned money. Family values and traditions are very important in maintaining social bonds in African American families. In addition, it is clear that African American families are matrifocal and matriarchal. Matrifocality is present in Burdy s Bend Miss Pearl is a great example (Stack, 1996), in the film The Language You Cry In, and as discussed in Dr. Stevenson s in class lecture (J. Lab Report Of Caffeine Introduction The process Sublimation is a method used to disconnect a natural product from different undesired compounds and after that it is purified by the change of state from solid to vapor. The majority substances, under typical states claiming climate pressure, progress its stage with a temperature rise from solid to liquid and to gas. Meantime other compounds, like iodine and carbon dioxide experiences sublimation at this pressure. By bringing down the temperature and pressure of a system, we can influence change in crude caffeine. Crude caffeine is extracted from tea or coffee, our experiment was on tea. We got 9.6g of crude caffeine and it contained some purities. It became crude due to the lower boiling point of pure caffeine than the impurities. Therefore, pure caffeine went through the direct change of state before the impurities. We separated and collected the caffeine from impurities by condensing it in a closed area. To produce pure caffeine this process is used by commercial industries in a large number of scale, but for our laboratory purposes, we performed in a small filter flask, a rubber hose to connect to the flask and the vacuum. I will be thoroughly going through this movie and how it connects with my personal philosophy of nature. This movie is a representation of Global Warming and the drastic effects that it can have on this Earth. Although the movie might be greatly over exaggerated, it is meant to stir the audience and conjure up emotions and feelings of wanting to change. Ligaments are connective tissues with the function of joining articulating bones at joints, in this case, the femur and tibia. Fibroblasts are the cells that make up the ligaments, which are made up of between 70% and 80% collagen. The high level of collagen gives the ligament tissue high tensile strength. The flexibility of the ligaments comes from the elastin fibers that are in the extracellular matrix, which counters the solid nature of the bone (Prater A.M., 2010). The ligaments of the knee assist in controlling the movements that occur at the joint. The collateral ligaments are positioned on each side of the joint (the medial collateral ligament on the medial side and the lateral collateral ligament on the lateral side). The cruciate ligaments are found deep within the knee joint. The anterior cruciate ligament attaches to the medial and anterior aspect of the tibial plateau and on the lateral femoral condyle. The posterior cruciate ligament attaches to the posterior aspect of the tibial plateau and the medial femoral condyle (Johns Hopkins Sports Medicine). The names of the cruciate ligaments arise from their nature of crossing over each other between each of their attachments and from the position of their tibial attachments. (Palastanga Soames, 2012). First established by the United Nations decades ago, it has played an outstanding role in the peaceful aim and determination of armed conflict around the world. It was at the end of the Cold War that it mostly reached its peak as many long term conflicts were finally coming to an end due to the political negotiations which were often broken but were successfully applied after strong mediation and peacekeeping effort. For this thesis of the Darfur conflict, to assess and examine the African Union s mediation and peacekeeping agenda, we must first understand and differentiate between peacemaking and peacekeeping. Then their role in the Darfur conflict could be analyzed and if they have had an outstanding role as in many others armed conflict. Definition of Mediation and Peacekeeping What is mediation? What is peacemaking? Peacemaking and mediation are deeply intertwine and cannot be defined without one another. But what is peacemaking? Peacemaking has been defined by many scholars and critics. Their parents might start them off with one sport and then before you know it the child is juggling a handful of sports to see, which ones they like. As these young athletes get older, they tend to get stuck at a crossroad. The athletes are posed with the same decision: to specialize in one sport or to continue playing all the sports they love. However, do athletes that specialize in one sport perform better as they grow up compared to those that continue playing multiple sports? It is important to resolve this question because there has been a rise in early youth sport specialization over the last few years due to pressure put on athletes by their coaches and parents, rather than a logical rationale (Myer 2015). Often, as young athletes reach middle school and high school levels, coaches and parents tend to see the potential these athletes have. As a result, the athletes are persuaded and or forced into quitting certain sports to specialize in their dominant sport with hopes of achieving more success. However, these children miss out in experiences they might have had if they didn t quit those sports. If they choose not to quit, they are usually treated differently by their coaches. Coaches will talk to them in a hasty manner compared to other kids or even discipline them harder, solely because the athlete didn t do ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 29. Theme Of Love In City Lights I. The one theme that connects all the films we have watched in this class is an overall theme of love this love presents itself in many different ways. In City Lights, the love between The tramp and the blind girl, in Central Station it is the love between two strangers, Dora and Josue, The Namesake has the love in an arranged marriage, Children of Heaven, the love between a brother and sister, and The Kite Runner has love between two best friends that transcends the generations. All of these movies have very different sets of characters, plots, settings, and cultures but the one theme connecting them all is love. This love presents itself in many different ways, but the love is present all the same. City Lights by Charlie Chaplin took place right here in the United States and started off the semester with a traditional view of love as a culture we often view falling in love with someone as the ideal what everyone wants. We especially want someone to love us for who we are, not the money or things that we have. In City Lights, the Tramp inadvertently tricks the blind girl into thinking that he has a lot of money. However despite this deception, he loves her, he wants to do what is best for her, even if it gets him in trouble or sends her away from him. He tries working hard to get her what she needs a cure for her blindness. Working hard does not work out for him, and he goes to great lengths to get the money for her, including the boxing match and asking the millionaire for help. He does this because he loves her deeply and he wants what is best for her. The movie ends with her being able to see and still accepting him despite the fact that he is not a millionaire. This film portrays the great American love story putting the other person first, and loving them despite their circumstances. Central Station from Brazil by Walter Salles depicts a different kind of love. This movie could have been about Josue, and the love with his mother or his brothers at the end when he finds them instead it is about the love between him and Dora, an old, sad woman with no relation to him. Throughout the film, Dora always tries to do what she thinks is best for Josue. It is misguided at first, when she sells him to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Progressive Movement Research Papers The Progressive Movement quot;Progressive Education assumes the world changes, and that in a universe that is not particularly concerned with ability to think straight quot; Rychard Fink During the early 1900s, the Progressive Movement came to the forefront of what Herbert Kliebard has called quot;the struggle for the American curriculum. quot; Progressivism consistently challenged traditional ideals concerning the foundations upon which students education in schools was based. The organizational thought process that relates all experiential processes is something Dewey named the quot;Logical Organization of Subject Matter. quot; The second principle, interaction, denotes the concept that what was learned may possibly need revisions, adaptations, or be discarded all together because further research has claimed it to be false. Essentially, from this standpoint, assumptions need to be challenged in the continual search for absolute truth. Thus the interaction principle encouraged experimentalism, verification, and reconstruction. The Progressive Movement was at its peak in the 1930 s during the Great Depression in the United States. Previously, in 1918, the Progressive Education Association was founded. Many who supported the movement felt there should be less authoritarianism in the schools, an elimination of set standards for school curriculum, and an emphasis on teaching what the pupils desired to learn. However, the movement did have its share of critics that felt education needed a foundation of basic skills and more discipline. By the early 1940s, such concerns came to the forefront of curriculum theorizing and the Progressive Movement quickly lost its centrality in terms of influencing school practice. The Progressive Movement made a lasting impact on American education in that it challenged traditional practices in education and conceptualized the student as an individual with ... • 31. Analysis Of Edwin Robinson s Poem, Richard Cory Authors often use fictional stories to explain situations in the real world. As a result, citizens are able to better understand the problems of society, and they are more likely to fix them. This is evident in Edwin Robinson s poem, Richard Cory. Due to the author s use of literary devices and details in this piece of literature, he portrays Richard Cory as a successful man. By the end of the poem, he becomes depressed and commits suicide. This expresses the idea that looks, money, and intelligence might seem to create happiness, but these things do not always allow individuals to enjoy life. Initially, Robinson uses literary elements and descriptions to portray Richard Cory as a perfect individual. For instance, the author describes the main character as richer than a king (Robinson 9). Due to the low probability of an upper class American obtaining as much wealth as the ruler of an entire country, this statement can be considered a hyperbole. Although this is not a true statement, it aids readers in understanding the immense wealth that Cory has developed throughout his life. In addition to wealth, Robinson uses various allusions and descriptions to explain Cory s physique. The main character is said to be not only clean favored and imperially slim, but also a gentleman from sole to crown (Robinson 3). This indicates that he is not only handsome, but also well respected. Lastly, the author describes Cory s personality through examples of dialogue. For instance, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Salem With Trials Salem Witch Trials The 17th century was filled with mystery because of the strong beliefs in the supernatural powers and the presence of Satan on Earth in the colonial North America. Witchcraft, the use of magical faculties, was mainly used by the peasants with a particular charm of being associated with the evil spirits and demons to prosper in their agricultural activities. In fact, many literatures were written on witchcraft during that period. For instance, Joseph Glanvill in 1668, claimed to have proof of the existence of these powers in witches and ghosts in his thesis titled Against Modern Sadducism . Along with this thesis, other works by Cotton Mather, a minister at the Boston North Church, created the fear among the people about the wandering and meandering of demons on Earth (Adams, 2009). As a result, there was caution and concern among people from all quarters regarding the activity of witchcraft and black magic. This proves the common mindset of the society and the religious views and beliefs were blindly followed during those days; particularly when Christianity was almost occult. In the Salem Village (currently Denver, Massachusetts), people believed that ills and misfortunes were a result of the Devil s tricky activities. Meaning to break even, you have to sell $52,000.00 of units of computer paper. The margin of safety, expressed in either dollars or a percentage, shows how much sales can be reduced without sustaining losses (Schneider, 2012). The formula to find margin of safety in dollars is: margin of safety in dollars equals the actual (or expected) costs minus the break even costs. So in the case of computer paper. The actual cost of $30,000.00 minus the break even point of $52,000.00 gives you the margin of safety of $22,000.00. Meaning you can cut the sales of computer paper by $22,000.00 and not sustain a loss. To find the break even point for napkins, you use the same formula. The fixed cost is still $420,000.00. The selling price of napkins is $7.00. The variable cost is $4.50. $7.00 minus $4.50 is $2.50. So then you take $420,000.00 and divide it by $2.50 to find the breaking point of $168,000.00. The company will have to sell $168,000.00 to break even in sales. The margin for safety for napkins is $48,000.00. This is found by subtracting the actual or expected cost of $120,000.00 by the break even point of $168,000.00. You can cut sales by $48,000.00 and not sustain a loss. The break even point for place mats is $50,000.00. This is found by the selling price per unit is $12.00. The variable price per unit of place mats is $3.60. $12.00 minus $3.60 equals $8.40. The idea of people being obedient to some of the cruelest orders, such as killing millions of people in the Holocaust, surprises many people. Thus, many authors decide to find out the answer by bringing up many opinions about the creation of the mass movement in their own books or plays for discussion. One of those authors is Eric Hoffer, who suggests that a mass movement is created by the cooperation between the man of words , the fanatic , and the man of actions (147). In fact, he points out that the three groups have the same craving for something new and different that they believe can only be obtained through a revolution. At the same time, Tony Kushner also offers his own belief on the topic through his play A Bright Room Called Day by establishing a setting in Berlin, where people follow their own party in a fight against the development of a Nazi government.
