The Sarbane-Oxley Act (SOA) Essay
INTRODUCTION
The Public Company Accounting Reform and Investor Protection Act was signed into law by
President Bush on July 30, 2002. The law is now known as The Sarbane Oxley Act (SOA). The SOA
has eleven titles within the act and numerous sections, pertaining to ethics, accounting, financial
reporting, responsibilities of officers, whistleblower protection, and increased criminal penalties built
upon prior securities laws. SOA is the most comprehensive securities legislation written since the
1940s. In the early part of the twentieth century companies did not have the sophistication and abilities
of the modern company in regard to information technology, number of accountants, advisors and
analysts. This legislation is a big step ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Sections 302, 304, 306, 402, 403 and 406 are designed to improve the ?Tone at the Top? of
companies. The sections are primarily geared towards the CFOs, CEOs and other company officers.
An example is under section 302; the CEO and CFO need to personally certify financial documents
pertaining to annual and quarterly reports. Section 304 forces management to return bonuses earned if
the financial documents were inaccurate as a result of misconduct. Section 306 states company
officers cannot trade during pension fund blackout periods. Section 402 prohibits insider loans.
Section 403 mandates electronic filing of insider transactions. In other words, if the CFO decides he
should sell his stock, the immediacy of the sale would have to be reported or filed with the SEC.
Section 406 forces a company to have a written code of ethics for the CEO, CFO and the staff.
www.sec.gov/news/press/2003 89a.htm. Further scrutiny of the legislation also reveals that section
1106 allows increased criminal penalties under the Securities Exchange Act of 1934, this changes the
maximum of 10 years to 20 years imprisonment and the $1,000,000.00 fine to a $5,000,000.00 fine.
The tone of leadership is important for the wellness of an organization. As stated, ?Tone at the Top? is
a start, the leaders must be ethical and act accordingly

D. Ruxton s Non-Visual Hypothesis
One of the essential elements of life for living organisms is survival, which in most cases, requires the
consumption of other organisms, and therefore is where separating living organisms into two
categories: predator and prey. But with survival there comes a time where the organism must avoid
death by factors of life. The influence of camouflage on the predation rate has given the organism that
is preyed apound a chance to experience a longer life span. According to G.D. Ruxton in Non visual
crypsis: a review of the empirical evidence for camouflage to senses other than vision, organisms use
the ability to camouflage to make themselves seem invisible or difficult to see to their prey.
Camouflage varies from changes in the color of the body, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The study occurred at Morrell Creek in the United States Northern Rockies, a temperate boreal
coniferous forest, and the animal of interest was wild snowshoe hares. Approximately 148 radio
collared hares were observed over the course of two years beginning in 2010 and ending in 2012. Due
to the low annual survival rate of the hares, only seven hares survived, therefore, limiting the
collection of data needed to support their hypothesis. Also, because of incomplete detection and
temporary emigration of radiocolllared animals, Mill and his companions were not able to determine
spring or fall moth for the seven surviving hares. However,it was discovered that alterations in the
spring color change rate from white to brown molt occurred compared to the color change in the fall
where it was absent in both the beginning date and rate from brown to white molt. Futhmore, the
annual average duration of snowpack will decrease between the ranges of 29 35 in the midcentury and
40 69 close to the end of the century. Also, if no changes occur in the phenotype of coat color, then by
the end of the century, the decreased snow duration will cause an increase in the mismatching of hares
when snow is absence (Mills et al

The Steam Engine and Electricity Powered the Industrial...
The Steam Engine and Electricity Powered the Industrial Revolution
The Industrial Revolution was an extremely important historical process in which the societies and
cultures in the West, and then throughout the world, transformed under the influence of technological
and scientific progress. The Western world, as industrialized as it is today, is the final result. Two
major inventions, the steam engine and electricity, were both crucial parts of the technological
progress that turned the wheels of the Industrial Revolution.
According to World History From 1500 by J. Michael Allen and James B. Allen, the Industrial
Revolution could not have happened without a new, reliable source of power (144). The steam engine

In 1765 a brilliant Scottish inventor James Watt made a major improvement to the Newcomen s
engine; the resulting new engine required 75 percent less fuel. According to the History Channel
presentation, Money and Power, the new invention got immediate attention of a Scottish businessman
Roebuck, who bought two thirds of the patent. Later, unfortunately, the partnership fell apart, and Watt
found a new partner in 1774, Matthew Boulton. Together they built a new water pump engine in five
months, and by 1776 a few of the pumps were already in service. The new engine was far more
affordable and efficient than Newcomen s engine and greatly improved the production in the areas it
was used. But more tasks were awaiting the steam engine; new machines in various branches of
industry needed power. As Egon Larsen writes in A History of Invention, Boulton badgered Watt to
think of ways and means to convert the reciprocating movement of the engine into a rotary one for use
in factories and, later perhaps, for vehicles and ships (37). Watt produced at least five different
solutions. So, in the last quarter of the eighteenth century, Watt s engines were running all over Britain
and abroad serving as pumps, blasting furnaces, and driving machinery in factories. As a result of
these applications, In 1800 Great Britain was producing more coal and iron than the rest of the world
combined: 12 million tons of coal

Tracking Is An Assault On Liberty By Nicholas Carr
In the essay, Tracking Is an Assault on Liberty by Nicholas Carr, he argues the importance of privacy
when one is surfing the web. Carr writes how companies personalize ads they provide on the internet
based on our personal information. We are not aware of the consequences and the information we
disclose about ourselves on the internet. Everything we do on the internet is recorded and stored.
Nicholas Carr uses ethos and counter argument/refutation to express to his audience that their privacy
is being violated. Carr utilizes ethical appeals to identify to his readers that he/she has a right to their
own privacy and how companies and organizations are violating it. He strengthens his ethical appeal
and argument by collecting ample evidence from professionals in the field. Carr writes, ...the
computer consultant Tom Owad... wrote a simple piece of software that allowed him to download
public wish lists that Amazon.com customers post to catalog products that they plan to purchase...Mr.
Owad ended up with maps of the United States showing the locations of people interested in particular
books and ideas... (Carr 437). Carr uses an expert to enhance his argument and provide a credible
source. The greater a person s authority, the more likely an audience is inclined to listen and be
persuaded. By putting an expert s research on his essay, Carr s audience will be convinced which will
lead them to trust him more. Another example where Carr uses an expert s opinion is when he notes,
As the computer security expert Bruce Schneier has observed, privacy is not just a screen we hide
behind when we do something naughty or embarrassing; privacy is intrinsic to the concept of liberty.
When we feel that we re always being watched, we begin to lose our sense of self reliance and free
will and, along with it, our individuality (Carr 439). Carr uses Scheiner s, a computer security expert,
to tell his readers how one feels when they feel like they lost their privacy. Car uses reasoned
argument by stating series of statements that use evidence and reasoning to support his claim.
Carr also uses counterargument/refutations to influence the readers that our personal datas may fall in
the wrong hands. He writes, You have

My character is Boxer. He is a cart horse who never hesitate to work. He is completely involved in his
work and never stop until it is finish. During the construction of the first and the second windmills, he
was the one who worked the most, and the one who did the best job. Good for him, his strength is

He first trusted Snowball, and when Napoleon told the animals Snowball was a traitor, he started to

Nature Vs Nurture As A Serial Killer
Historical Background
What causes an individual to become a serial killer? Bio psychologists believe that starting from birth
the human mind is a tabula rasa or blank slate, and the individual learns behaviors and socio cultural
norms from individuals around them. This concept of nature versus nurture was based upon the idea
that it is how you are brought up (nurture) that governs the psychologically significant aspects of child
development and the concept of maturation applies only to the biological. The theory that explains the
nature aspect of the nature versus nurture principle is called the attachment theory, which views the
bond between mother and child as being an innate process that ensures survival. It is a biological need
that has ensured the survival of many species including the human race; because of the need to protect
and be protected humans as a species has been able to endure. It is also a psychological need to want
to be cared for as well as care for others a study done by Harry Harlow (1950s). The concept of
nurture focuses mainly on the effect that the environment has on the development of human beings
and whether it is more important than nature. Several studies have been generated to try and settle the
ongoing debate of nature versus nurture.
Many psychologists agree that nurture play a greater part in the development of a human being.

Economic Development For A Defined Area
Economic development for a defined area has three primary goals foster employment opportunities for
the area s current residents, diversify the area s economic and employment base, and stabilize the local
economy (Blakely Leigh, 2013). By providing quality jobs for an area s residents, versus the more
costly alternative of bringing new firms to the area (which could also require a different skill set in
their labor force than what the city currently has rendering the city s effort somewhat fruitless), the
economic planning organization is looking to create employment diversity and opportunities from
within their own community that are suitable for the area s workforce. An area must also be highly
aware of the business environment within the community to ensure that local economic stability is
possible. If the city does not have a diverse infrastructure that firms require to conduct business than
the locality will not be able to grow, retain, or attract firms within or to the area. Diversity in the
economic and employment base is also a complex and constantly evolving challenge for local
economic development practitioners. The organization must be able to keep track and organize
employment data within a locality to see where certain sectors of the economy are in the need of
assistance to prevent employment gaps in the community. Planner s should be constantly comparing
their strategies and approaches to the three goals local economic development, and prevent any action

Crime Rate And Its Effect On The Incarceration Rate
In our study, the independent variable is whether a state elects or appoints judges. The dependent
variable is the incarceration rate (per 100,000 people) for each state. To control for these variables, we
also measured the violent crime rate (per 100,000 people) for each state. The violent crime rate allows
us to see whether or not crime rate or judges are having a measurable effect on the incarceration rate.
Without controlling for the crime rate, we would not be able to tell if higher incarceration rates were
truly a result of elected judges, as crime rate would also be playing a significant part. This is because it
could be purely coincidental that violent crime rates are higher in states that also elect judges.
Therefore, if we didn t ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The value of each variable is the number of people who are incarcerated per 100,000 people. No
mathematical equation or changes were made before entering it into the SPSS program, our statistical
test.
For our data, we chose to control for the violent crime in each state. We did this by using the violent
crime rate, which was measured similarly to the incarceration rate. We measured it by every 100,000
people for each of the 50 states. In order to code this, we used a range of 0 100,000. The variable can
be anywhere within the range and only represents the number of individuals who have committed
violent crime per 100,000 people per state. No type of equations or recoding was done before we
entered this data into the SPSS program. We used a linear regression as the statistical test to prove our
hypothesis. We chose to run a linear regression because the dependent variable, the incarceration rate,
had more than two values that could be used. This is because the incarceration rates could range
anywhere from 0 to 100,000 people. Therefore, it only made sense to use the linear regression. As
seen, the independent variable was whether a state elected or appointed judges. Further, the violent
crime rate (per 100,000 people) was the control variable. With the data above, we can conclude that
our hypothesis (which asserts that states that elect judges are more likely than those who appoint
judges to have higher

price environment in 2004 when the Kosmos /E.O group made initial contact with GNPC. Between
1898 to the late nineties an estimated hundred exploration wells had been drilled in Ghana with no
significant discovery except for the Saltpond oil find in 1970. Our expert opinion on the recent oil
discovery in Ghana is that it should be seen as a

Gwendolyn Brook And Kwame Dawess Analysis
The African American Struggle Through Contemporary Poetry Ai, Gwendolyn Brooks, and Kwame
Dawes are all contemporary African American poets. Their works often focused on different aspects
of the post civil rights movement in the African American community. Ai was known for writing
poetry on hard subjects. She was also known for writing poems that were graphic. Being multiracial,(
1/2 Japanese, 1/8 Choctaw, 1/4 Black, and 1/16 Irish), many of her poems were based on the
complexity of identity ( qtd. in Ai, a Steadfast Poetic Channel of Hard Lives, Dies at 62 ). On the other
hand, Kwame Dawes is a Nigerian born man of Jamaican descent. Gwendolyn Brooks was an African
American woman whose adult years were spent during the civil rights movement. Tornado Child is a
poem written by Kwame Dawes in 2002. It celebrates different aspects of black womanhood. In
contrast, Gwendolyn Brook s We Real Cool is written in the sixties and talks about the negative
aspects of stereotypes. The Kid by Ai is graphic and depicts violence. All of the poems demonstrate
different struggles that are faced by the African American community. This essay will specifically
examine the African American struggle through the lens of misogynoir, stereotypes, and the
destruction of black families. The first poem, Tornado Child by Kwame Dawes, explores the African
American struggle through misogynoir. Dictionary.com describes misogynoir as the specific hatred,

Theme Of Sunday In The Park By Bel Kaufman
Themes of Sunday in the Park The short story Sunday in the Park by Bel Kaufman contains many
different themes. A theme presented in this story is how society expects certain behaviors on the roles
men have. People use those stereotypes to define strangers when they walk by, but are they always
true? In the story, there are two different fathers. The first man, known as Morton or Larry s father, is
described city pale and cooped up all week inside the gray factory like university . Morton is a
university professor, and in stereotype, society expects a professor to be intelligent, polite, and
someone to respect. Morton contributes to the themes on the roles of men and their behaviors. The

encourages Joe to continue. Joe s father defines the themes on the roles of men and behaviors. Being
completely different from Morton, Joe s father can be presented as a stereotypical man. He obviously
knows how to stand up for himself and earn the best for him and his son. He does not back down like
Morton and immediately gains what he has fought for with his actions. Just by slowly looking over
Morton from head to foot and the way he speaks to Morton, Joe s father fits the stereotype of men

The Use Of Hip Hop Music In The 1990 s
In the 1990 s we saw many artists sampling the work of other artists in order to make their own songs.
Sampling is described as the act of taking a portion, or sample, of one song recording and reusing it as
an instrument or a sound recording in a different song or piece (Wikipedia, 2016). Although sampling
has been around for a long time, Hip Hop music was one of the most popular music genres to embrace
this method and create their own style from it. Advancements in technology allowed for the use of
sampling to be done with ease. Producers are able to pull a beat from a song and use that beat or even
loop it to create a new sound. This became a large part of Hip hop music. While some may think of
Kanye West and his use of sampling, it

today. Founding Brothers by Joseph Ellis, the book that will be reviewed today, mentions the
importance of our founding fathers, or brothers, to out country today. Ellis intention of writing this
book was to show how the road to creating The Constitution required a lot of arguments and
challenges along the way. As stated in the introduction, Ellis main argument in this book is that the
success that the USA has today was not a foregone conclusion or certain at that time period. This
statement means that the arguments and events that occurred did not have obvious answers, due to the

There was a strong hatred between these two candidates, so Burr challenged Hamilton to a duel. When
they fought, Hamilton shot his gun and missed, which made Burr feel as if his life was in danger and

nation falling apart, and demonstrates how the duel was a direct result of the fear of falling apart. In
addition, the Founding Brothers decided not to talk about slavery or abolish it. Ellis is able to portray
how the founding fathers felt that keeping the union together was more important than the issue of
slavery, due to the South wanting to keep slaves. However, an argument can be made that slavery
should have had more importance over a united North and South, as it was the humane approach, and
the success of the North could have been a foregone conclusion . Nonetheless, the success of the

The biggest notable difference is the handling of each on the financial statements. An operating lease
is similar to a rental agreement so there is no long term liability on the balance sheet. It allows the
lessee to engage in off balance sheet financing. This provides several benefits for the company to
maintain a good financial position. When a company enters a capital lease the asset is reported on the
balance sheet. This results in the debt to total equity increasing and the rate of return on total assets to
decrease. The ratios can negatively affect financing opportunities, the corporate bond covenants, and
management compensation incentives (Schroeder, Clark, amp; Cathey, 2011). In addition, the
depreciation required on the asset in a capital lease will result in a deferred tax. The funds from
operations on the cash flow statement will be higher by the deferred tax when a capital lease is used
(Ingberman, Ronen, amp; Sorter, 1979). The cash from the operations section on the cash flow must
be reconciled to remove noncash items during the period (Kieso, Weygandt, amp; Warfield, 2007).
The company will receive benefits from both types of leases; the right option for the company will
depend on their needs and strategy.

The War Of The Second World War II Essay
When news of the United States involvement in World War II was made known in 1940, Congress
imposed a draft for men ages eighteen to thirty seven. This was a way for them to join the fight against
the axis powers. This particular war is noted as the most brutal war throughout all of history. Out of
the men who registered to draft, many of them were also involved in what would be called the most
popular battle of the Second World War, or the invasion of Normandy. The Invasion of Normandy,
other wise referred to as D Day occurred June 6th 1944 when allied forces invaded the border of
Normandy and pushed the German forces back through France. Over one hundred thousand American,
British, and Canadian forces landed on several beaches along the region. While the German numbers
had already greatly thinned due to the war in Russia, D Day and the Allies continued the further ruin
of their troops. The victory over the Axis powers was accomplished through the efforts of all those
within the allied powers including Britain and Canada however, the main focus of this research is the
United States involvement in the D Day invasion. As previously mentioned the Invasion of Normandy
had a huge affect on the war itself, but how has it affected the United States overall? Did the United
States involvement in the battle pave a way to its victory? However the Invasion of Normandy
affected certain aspects within the war, it definitely had an impact from an American standpoint. This

Research Paper On Sucker By Carson Mcculler
Sucker Research paper In the story Sucker, by Carson McCullers, you see heavy use of the human
condition that every negative action originates from a negative mood or emotion and every positive
reaction comes from a positive mood or emotion. In the story the elder cousin Pete treated his younger
cousin, Sucker AKA Richard, based on how he was treated by Maybelle. When Maybelle treated Pete
poorly and ignored him, Pete did the same to Sucker. This caused the young boy Richard to develop
emotional problems, which caused his relationship with his cousin to be broken and tainted, due to the
cascade of negativity. Sometimes this look in his eyes makes me almost believe that if Sucker could

Modernism In Taxi Driver
Modernism is an art movement that became increasingly popular towards the end of the 1800 s. This
is a movement that followed the likes of the renaissance and romanticism. It encouraged the avant

style. There are many art theories that flourished in the modern era and many were created as reactions
to others. Examples of modern art movements are impressionism, expressionism, dada, surrealism and
more. The modern era, however, lasted until the late 1900 s where everything so forth became known
as contemporary art. This, in all simplicity, is a period of art that has been created today. It is largely
debated as to when this movement started but some say that it was initiated by Andy Warhol and Pop
Art. Films, theatres, and paintings created in this contemporary period owe much of its inspiration
from the influences of the modern era. Pieces of art created today takes strands of modernism in order
to create something new. Focusing on one specific piece, the film Taxi Driver (1976) by Martin
Scorsese, starring Robert De Niro and Jodi Foster, is a good example of a contemporary piece that
contains influences from Modern art, mainly Futurism and Social Realism. Providing a brief
description of the film, Taxi Driver follows the story of Travis Bickle who lives a lonely life in New

On April 25, 1846 shots fired on a group of 70 American soldiers in disputed territory by the Mexican
army left 16 dead and the rest captures. This caused the United States to declare war on Mexico , a
somewhat justified move because Texas had already been annexed by the US, and the federal
government believed that the land up to the Rio Grande was theirs. However, the US did provoke
Mexico by moving troops inside that disputed zone, especially since they were so deep inside that
territory. By April 25th, 1846, the state of Texas had already been annexed by the United States. It is

regardless of whether or not the land was disputed. These actions were so rash that even some
Americans believed that they were uncalled for. Charles Sumner, representing the Massachusetts

The Origins Of The World
Viking, the word conjures up images of well built men with long hair and braided beards wearing firs
and horned helmets, holding axes and shields, ready to battle so they can return home to consume
bountiful feasts. The word brings to mind fanciful stories like Beowulf where these very same men
fight beasts after a night of stuffing their gullets and consuming large amounts of mead. There are so
many stories about these warriors that many of them have become legendary individuals, but there is
so little information about the people who provided the food to keep the so powered up, the people
who provided the nourishment for the rest of their community while the warriors plundered and
defended their honor. There is little known about the farmers. There is even less known about these
unsung heroes around the time that Christianity took over the Norse culture. A group of researchers
that took part in a study in Skagafjörður Iceland was determined to change that. Iceland has some of
the richest Viking history, next to The Netherlands, so the fact that the people living there would want
a more in depth history makes sense. Murphy and Zoëga took a special interest in a small site in the
project, to see how the common non warrior Viking lived their lives. They wanted to know more about
the people history forgot to mention, to breathe the life back into the people who time almost forgot,
the people whose story did not get told, the people Viking warriors would have not even existed

The Atomic Bomb Of The United States
In 1939, when it was discovered that Germany had the technology to produce a weapon of mass
destruction, the United States was determined that they would not fall trap to the Nazi s reign. World
renowned scientists gathered together and by 1941, the secret project to produce an atomic bomb was
given the code name the Manhattan Project. Nobody expected this weapon to be so powerful, but this
secret weapon had a lasting impact that changed the course of history. The Manhattan Project was
ultimately responsible for the accomplishment of separating a uranium atom, which resulted in a
weapon of mass destruction known as the atomic bomb. This secret project ultimately ended the
Second World War, issued in the nuclear age, and changed the way wars were fought. Interestingly, the
initiation of the Manhattan project can be attributed to two United States immigrants. Just after World
War II had begun, Albert Einstein, who had fled Nazi Germany, and Enrico Fermi, who had fled from
Italy, had come together and decided that the president must be warned of the fact that Germany had
the power to create an atomic weapon. At first, Roosevelt did not see the importance of this project,
and only allotted $6,000 for research. However, when the war with the Axis powers grew, fear also
grew, and the budget for the Manhattan project was ultimately enlarged to $2 billion dollars.
Eventually, Roosevelt established the Advisory Committee on Uranium and the National Defense
Research Committee. At

The Darcy Is A Man Of Good Standing
Fitzwilliam Darcy is a man of good standing. He is the master of Pemberley, a handsome estate in
Derbyshire near the town of Lambton and has a widely talked about income of £10,000 per year. He
inherited his fortune as well as co guardianship of his younger sister, Georgiana, when his father died.
Darcy was charged to take care of Georgiana along with his good natured cousin, Colonel Fitzwilliam.
Mr. Darcy is well liked by those who know him well; his sister adores him, and Colonel Fitzwilliam

Darcy might want to dance with a woman named Elizabeth Bennet, known as Lizzie by those closest

The Importance Of Spirituality In Antigone
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The name of this prayer is the
Sign of The Cross and as according to the Catholic Answers Website, is one of the common and
fundamental Catholic prayers. It derives from the Bible (Matthew 28:19) where it states, Therefore go
and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the
Holy Spirit... The prayer itself was one of the very first ones that I learned as I child. Although I did
not know it at the time, I was praying for the Holy Spirit to show my spirituality without realizing it.
As a young adult I now know and understand that by praying that simple prayer, I am also showing
my spirituality. Coming to that conclusion, however, has taken me on a spiritual journey in which I am
still discovering new things every day. Spirituality is being concerned with one s religious values
rather than only the quality of being concerned with the human spirit or soul as opposed to material or
physical things. In Antigone, one of Sophocles plays, Antigone, the main character, is proof of that
spirituality is being concerned with one s religious values rather than only the quality of being
concerned with the human spirit or soul as opposed to material or physical things. After Polynices and
Eteocles, Antigone s brothers, fight till death over the throne of the city of Thebes, the Greek City in

The European, White Male vs. the Other in Heart of Darkness
The novella Heart of Darkness has, since it s publication in 1899, caused much controversy and
invited much criticism. While some have hailed it s author, Joseph Conrad as producing a work ahead
of it s time in it s treatment and criticism of colonialist practices in the Congo, others, most notably
Chinua Achebe, have criticized it for it s racist and sexist construction of cultural identity. Heart of

In the case of the second instance it is somewhat appropriate that the leader s death is announced by
one of the people of the group he is seen to have joined. Therefore Africans are constructed as being
inferior to Europeans through Conrad s refusal to grant them the power of language and speech and
even when they are given the opportunity to speak, Conrad constructs Africans as being largely
inarticulate. Thus confirming the superiority of the white race.
Conrad further marginalises and degrades the African characters and race not only through the denial
of language but also the denial of human form. When Marlow first sees Africans in a small boat on the
water, he describes them in terms of their muscles , bones and white teeth , despite also recognizing a
vitality and spirit. The disembodiment continues when Marlow encounters the chain gang at the outer

finds emancipated and dying Africans, cast off by their imperialist owners because they are no longer
deemed to have monetary value, or economic viability. Instead of feeling revulsion s at this, Marlow
dehumanizes the Africans, describing them as bundles of acute angles and noting how they drink on

Betsey Johnson Research Paper
Everyone has a favorite designer. Designers could fall into the category of fashion, cars, movie media,

known for her creative designs through handbags, bookbags, jewelry, clothing (women and children),
and shoes. I admire the designs of Betsey Johnson so much that I only carry her brands. I admire her
handbags especially because of the large bows that are on most. In this assignment, I will be giving a
biography on designer Betsey Johnson. Included in this biography, I will also give a detailed
description on some of designs.
Betsey Johnson was born on August 10, 1942 in Wethersfield, Connecticut. She grew up in a town

State Should Replace TN Ready In recent years the state of Tennessee has experienced many problems
with their new standardized testing called TN Ready. The new TN Ready standardized testing is
unbeneficial to students and teachers. In the best interest of students and teachers the state should

TN Ready began the state has experienced many problems, some of which still exist two years later.

Bottom line is the state should not have begun a new way of testing student and teacher performance
until they were certain that teachers and students would experience no problems during testing. Since
a new test in and of itself is hard enough for teachers and students to learn how to do, the transition
from TCAP to TN Ready should have been smooth from the get go, but it was not. The state should
abolish TN Ready and move to the ACT Aspire for grades three through ten and the ACT for grade
eleven. Using the ACT Aspire and the ACT can serve many purpose. The first and perhaps the biggest
benefit of using the ACT Aspire and the ACT is that it can show not only how well students are
performing state wide but also how well they are performing nationally. There is also more practice
resources out for ACT whereas there is hardly any for educators or students to use for TN Ready.
Finally using the ACT Aspire and the ACT would better prepare students for college admissions,
because teachers would be able to focus instruction solely on an exam that is comparable to that of the
ACT. Using the ACT Aspire and the ACT is a win win situation for everyone.
Those opposed to using the ACT Aspire or the ACT would argue that it does not use some free
response questions like that of TN Ready, and that it does not

Professor s comment: Jane wrote this research paper for my Advanced Composition course. The

research in that area. Jane chose to look at how increased flooding and salinity might affect coastal

Additionally, Ehhas been shown to decrease even further when soils are flooded with increased
salinity levels (Baldwin and Mendelssohn, 1998; Flynn et al., 1995). Under these conditions, the soil
medium becomes highly reducing and can affect wetland vegetation in two ways. First, and probably
most significant, is the reduction of sulfate (present in seawater) to hydrogen sulfide, a known
phytotoxin that has been shown to reduce wetland vegetation growth and/or survival at higher
concentrations (Flynn et al., 1995). Secondly, highly reducing conditions can interfere with a plant s
ability to uptake nitrogen by altering its form and availability in the soil (Webb et al., 1995).
Other problems created by high salinity soil conditions include the change in water potential necessary
for the plant to overcome the elevated salt concentration in the soil, and the possibility of toxicity due
to uptake of Na+ and Cl ions (Flynn et al., 1995).
Physiological Responses of Wetland Plants due to Increased Flooding and Salinity
Although tolerance to increased flooding and salinity conditions varies somewhat by species, wetland
species that survive these heightened conditions demonstrate either some or all of the following
characteristics: lowered photosynthetic activity,

The Buddha s Charter Of Free Inquiry
Many people have participated in the discussion regarding the Kālāma Sutta. Unfortunately, a bundle
of people only focus on a single passage and misrepresent the whole sutta. More details of this will be
explored further in the later section, Buddhism and Authority.
In The Buddha s Charter of Free Inquiry Soma Thera says that the Kālāma Sutta is teaching to the
Kālāmas but is also an incentive of free inquiry. The teaching is exemption from the authoritative
dogmas, intolerance and personal interest. He further insisted that if one were to discern the discourse
correctly, wisdom is processed throughout. The sutta, he said, is very obvious in rejecting the bad and
adopting the good way... the place of critical examination and analysis in the development of right
vision. Buddha s insight into the matter of judgment is beyond our normal understanding. As the four
solaces show that a noble life is not about faith in rebirth and retribution. Instead, it is about happiness
of the mind by conquering our own avarice, enmity, and ignorance. Basically, the teaching is for
everyone.
Soma Thera concluded his essay by citing a short conversation between Moncure D. Conway and
Ponnambalam Ramanathan, who follow different faiths but come together and listen to the discourse
of the Kālāmas and profess this good doctrine is essential to humanity development.
However, scholar and monastic Bhikkhu Bodhi has a different perspective on the Kālāma Sutta. In his

The Decline in Union Membership has Helped to Improve Industrial Harmony Assess whether the
decline in Union membership has helped to improve industrial harmony. From 1979, the British

of workers were union members (Machin, 2000) and by 2004 only 27% of all workers were affiliated

Why would a worker belong to a trade union? Trade Union s use their collective identity to help
individuals receive the best treatment from their employers; in working conditions, and matters of pay
and entitlements. Unions work for their members to ensure wage mark ups are in line with the changes
in the economy and in harmony with expectations of the workers. A by product of a trade unions work
is to influence a more equitable dispersion of wages in the economy. All the outlined objectives appear
only to be positive, making it questionable as to why union membership would decline for any reason
other than the opinion that working conditions are good and a union s interference is considered
unnecessary. In fact, there are several reasons for the decline in trade union membership that are not
directly due to improved relations at work. The composition of the labour force has dramatically
changed in Britain where the 1970 s tradition of the working class male in industrial heartlands has
been replaced with equal proportions of men and women now working in a predominantly service
based economy. The compositional factors of de industrialisation and the increase in female
participation have undoubtedly lowered membership

There was so much drought that personally I m surprised that they survived on such little water. They
would go without water for more then 10 days. That s a long time! This means that the Jamestown
Colonists were dying off. There dying off, so what about the other animals? These animals were dying
too. This means that the Jamestown Colonists were losing food. This follows the old saying Desperate
times call for desperate measures. So with that being said. They would eat there horses, dogs, cats....
And even. Each other! That s right, cannibalism.
With these three reasons said, and detail explain put into them, you must understand now why
Jamestown Colonists died so early. The Drought, the fact of even caring, or even the Indians attacking

  • 3. The Sarbane-Oxley Act (SOA) Essay INTRODUCTION The Public Company Accounting Reform and Investor Protection Act was signed into law by President Bush on July 30, 2002. The law is now known as The Sarbane Oxley Act (SOA). The SOA has eleven titles within the act and numerous sections, pertaining to ethics, accounting, financial reporting, responsibilities of officers, whistleblower protection, and increased criminal penalties built upon prior securities laws. SOA is the most comprehensive securities legislation written since the 1940s. In the early part of the twentieth century companies did not have the sophistication and abilities of the modern company in regard to information technology, number of accountants, advisors and analysts. This legislation is a big step ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... All securities legislation can be found at: www.sec.gov/about/laws.shtml. Sections 302, 304, 306, 402, 403 and 406 are designed to improve the ?Tone at the Top? of companies. The sections are primarily geared towards the CFOs, CEOs and other company officers. An example is under section 302; the CEO and CFO need to personally certify financial documents pertaining to annual and quarterly reports. Section 304 forces management to return bonuses earned if the financial documents were inaccurate as a result of misconduct. Section 306 states company officers cannot trade during pension fund blackout periods. Section 402 prohibits insider loans. Section 403 mandates electronic filing of insider transactions. In other words, if the CFO decides he should sell his stock, the immediacy of the sale would have to be reported or filed with the SEC. Section 406 forces a company to have a written code of ethics for the CEO, CFO and the staff. www.sec.gov/news/press/2003 89a.htm. Further scrutiny of the legislation also reveals that section 1106 allows increased criminal penalties under the Securities Exchange Act of 1934, this changes the maximum of 10 years to 20 years imprisonment and the $1,000,000.00 fine to a $5,000,000.00 fine. • 4. D. Ruxton s Non-Visual Hypothesis One of the essential elements of life for living organisms is survival, which in most cases, requires the consumption of other organisms, and therefore is where separating living organisms into two categories: predator and prey. But with survival there comes a time where the organism must avoid death by factors of life. The influence of camouflage on the predation rate has given the organism that is preyed apound a chance to experience a longer life span. According to G.D. Ruxton in Non visual crypsis: a review of the empirical evidence for camouflage to senses other than vision, organisms use the ability to camouflage to make themselves seem invisible or difficult to see to their prey. Camouflage varies from changes in the color of the body, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The study occurred at Morrell Creek in the United States Northern Rockies, a temperate boreal coniferous forest, and the animal of interest was wild snowshoe hares. Approximately 148 radio collared hares were observed over the course of two years beginning in 2010 and ending in 2012. Due to the low annual survival rate of the hares, only seven hares survived, therefore, limiting the collection of data needed to support their hypothesis. Also, because of incomplete detection and temporary emigration of radiocolllared animals, Mill and his companions were not able to determine spring or fall moth for the seven surviving hares. However,it was discovered that alterations in the spring color change rate from white to brown molt occurred compared to the color change in the fall where it was absent in both the beginning date and rate from brown to white molt. Futhmore, the annual average duration of snowpack will decrease between the ranges of 29 35 in the midcentury and 40 69 close to the end of the century. Also, if no changes occur in the phenotype of coat color, then by the end of the century, the decreased snow duration will cause an increase in the mismatching of hares when snow is absence (Mills et al ... • 5. The Steam Engine and Electricity Powered the Industrial... The Steam Engine and Electricity Powered the Industrial Revolution The Industrial Revolution was an extremely important historical process in which the societies and cultures in the West, and then throughout the world, transformed under the influence of technological and scientific progress. The Western world, as industrialized as it is today, is the final result. Two major inventions, the steam engine and electricity, were both crucial parts of the technological progress that turned the wheels of the Industrial Revolution. According to World History From 1500 by J. Michael Allen and James B. Allen, the Industrial Revolution could not have happened without a new, reliable source of power (144). The steam engine became such ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In 1765 a brilliant Scottish inventor James Watt made a major improvement to the Newcomen s engine; the resulting new engine required 75 percent less fuel. According to the History Channel presentation, Money and Power, the new invention got immediate attention of a Scottish businessman Roebuck, who bought two thirds of the patent. Later, unfortunately, the partnership fell apart, and Watt found a new partner in 1774, Matthew Boulton. Together they built a new water pump engine in five months, and by 1776 a few of the pumps were already in service. The new engine was far more affordable and efficient than Newcomen s engine and greatly improved the production in the areas it was used. But more tasks were awaiting the steam engine; new machines in various branches of industry needed power. As Egon Larsen writes in A History of Invention, Boulton badgered Watt to think of ways and means to convert the reciprocating movement of the engine into a rotary one for use in factories and, later perhaps, for vehicles and ships (37). Watt produced at least five different solutions. So, in the last quarter of the eighteenth century, Watt s engines were running all over Britain and abroad serving as pumps, blasting furnaces, and driving machinery in factories. As a result of these applications, In 1800 Great Britain was producing more coal and iron than the rest of the world combined: 12 million tons of coal ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Tracking Is An Assault On Liberty By Nicholas Carr In the essay, Tracking Is an Assault on Liberty by Nicholas Carr, he argues the importance of privacy when one is surfing the web. Carr writes how companies personalize ads they provide on the internet based on our personal information. We are not aware of the consequences and the information we disclose about ourselves on the internet. Everything we do on the internet is recorded and stored. Nicholas Carr uses ethos and counter argument/refutation to express to his audience that their privacy is being violated. Carr utilizes ethical appeals to identify to his readers that he/she has a right to their own privacy and how companies and organizations are violating it. He strengthens his ethical appeal and argument by collecting ample evidence from professionals in the field. Carr writes, ...the computer consultant Tom Owad... wrote a simple piece of software that allowed him to download public wish lists that Amazon.com customers post to catalog products that they plan to purchase...Mr. Owad ended up with maps of the United States showing the locations of people interested in particular books and ideas... (Carr 437). Carr uses an expert to enhance his argument and provide a credible source. The greater a person s authority, the more likely an audience is inclined to listen and be persuaded. By putting an expert s research on his essay, Carr s audience will be convinced which will lead them to trust him more. Another example where Carr uses an expert s opinion is when he notes, As the computer security expert Bruce Schneier has observed, privacy is not just a screen we hide behind when we do something naughty or embarrassing; privacy is intrinsic to the concept of liberty. When we feel that we re always being watched, we begin to lose our sense of self reliance and free will and, along with it, our individuality (Carr 439). Carr uses Scheiner s, a computer security expert, to tell his readers how one feels when they feel like they lost their privacy. Car uses reasoned argument by stating series of statements that use evidence and reasoning to support his claim. Carr also uses counterargument/refutations to influence the readers that our personal datas may fall in the wrong hands. He writes, You have ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Nature Vs Nurture As A Serial Killer Historical Background What causes an individual to become a serial killer? Bio psychologists believe that starting from birth the human mind is a tabula rasa or blank slate, and the individual learns behaviors and socio cultural norms from individuals around them. This concept of nature versus nurture was based upon the idea that it is how you are brought up (nurture) that governs the psychologically significant aspects of child development and the concept of maturation applies only to the biological. The theory that explains the nature aspect of the nature versus nurture principle is called the attachment theory, which views the bond between mother and child as being an innate process that ensures survival. It is a biological need that has ensured the survival of many species including the human race; because of the need to protect and be protected humans as a species has been able to endure. It is also a psychological need to want to be cared for as well as care for others a study done by Harry Harlow (1950s). The concept of nurture focuses mainly on the effect that the environment has on the development of human beings and whether it is more important than nature. Several studies have been generated to try and settle the ongoing debate of nature versus nurture. Many psychologists agree that nurture play a greater part in the development of a human being. • 10. Economic Development For A Defined Area Economic development for a defined area has three primary goals foster employment opportunities for the area s current residents, diversify the area s economic and employment base, and stabilize the local economy (Blakely Leigh, 2013). By providing quality jobs for an area s residents, versus the more costly alternative of bringing new firms to the area (which could also require a different skill set in their labor force than what the city currently has rendering the city s effort somewhat fruitless), the economic planning organization is looking to create employment diversity and opportunities from within their own community that are suitable for the area s workforce. An area must also be highly aware of the business environment within the community to ensure that local economic stability is possible. If the city does not have a diverse infrastructure that firms require to conduct business than the locality will not be able to grow, retain, or attract firms within or to the area. Diversity in the economic and employment base is also a complex and constantly evolving challenge for local economic development practitioners. The organization must be able to keep track and organize employment data within a locality to see where certain sectors of the economy are in the need of assistance to prevent employment gaps in the community. Planner s should be constantly comparing their strategies and approaches to the three goals local economic development, and prevent any action ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Crime Rate And Its Effect On The Incarceration Rate In our study, the independent variable is whether a state elects or appoints judges. The dependent variable is the incarceration rate (per 100,000 people) for each state. To control for these variables, we also measured the violent crime rate (per 100,000 people) for each state. The violent crime rate allows us to see whether or not crime rate or judges are having a measurable effect on the incarceration rate. Without controlling for the crime rate, we would not be able to tell if higher incarceration rates were truly a result of elected judges, as crime rate would also be playing a significant part. This is because it could be purely coincidental that violent crime rates are higher in states that also elect judges. Therefore, if we didn t ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The value of each variable is the number of people who are incarcerated per 100,000 people. No mathematical equation or changes were made before entering it into the SPSS program, our statistical test. For our data, we chose to control for the violent crime in each state. We did this by using the violent crime rate, which was measured similarly to the incarceration rate. We measured it by every 100,000 people for each of the 50 states. In order to code this, we used a range of 0 100,000. The variable can be anywhere within the range and only represents the number of individuals who have committed violent crime per 100,000 people per state. No type of equations or recoding was done before we entered this data into the SPSS program. We used a linear regression as the statistical test to prove our hypothesis. We chose to run a linear regression because the dependent variable, the incarceration rate, had more than two values that could be used. This is because the incarceration rates could range anywhere from 0 to 100,000 people. Therefore, it only made sense to use the linear regression. As seen, the independent variable was whether a state elected or appointed judges. Further, the violent crime rate (per 100,000 people) was the control variable. With the data above, we can conclude that our hypothesis (which asserts that states that elect judges are more likely than those who appoint judges to have higher ... Historically, exploration for oil and gas reserves in Ghana had been very limited due to the high risk nature of its terrain and low oil price environment in 2004 when the Kosmos /E.O group made initial contact with GNPC. Between 1898 to the late nineties an estimated hundred exploration wells had been drilled in Ghana with no significant discovery except for the Saltpond oil find in 1970. • 13. Gwendolyn Brook And Kwame Dawess Analysis The African American Struggle Through Contemporary Poetry Ai, Gwendolyn Brooks, and Kwame Dawes are all contemporary African American poets. Their works often focused on different aspects of the post civil rights movement in the African American community. Ai was known for writing poetry on hard subjects. She was also known for writing poems that were graphic. Being multiracial,( 1/2 Japanese, 1/8 Choctaw, 1/4 Black, and 1/16 Irish), many of her poems were based on the complexity of identity ( qtd. in Ai, a Steadfast Poetic Channel of Hard Lives, Dies at 62 ). On the other hand, Kwame Dawes is a Nigerian born man of Jamaican descent. Gwendolyn Brooks was an African American woman whose adult years were spent during the civil rights movement. Tornado Child is a poem written by Kwame Dawes in 2002. It celebrates different aspects of black womanhood. In contrast, Gwendolyn Brook s We Real Cool is written in the sixties and talks about the negative aspects of stereotypes. The Kid by Ai is graphic and depicts violence. All of the poems demonstrate different struggles that are faced by the African American community. This essay will specifically examine the African American struggle through the lens of misogynoir, stereotypes, and the destruction of black families. The first poem, Tornado Child by Kwame Dawes, explores the African American struggle through misogynoir. Sampling is described as the act of taking a portion, or sample, of one song recording and reusing it as an instrument or a sound recording in a different song or piece (Wikipedia, 2016). Although sampling has been around for a long time, Hip Hop music was one of the most popular music genres to embrace this method and create their own style from it. Advancements in technology allowed for the use of sampling to be done with ease. Producers are able to pull a beat from a song and use that beat or even loop it to create a new sound. Founding Brothers by Joseph Ellis, the book that will be reviewed today, mentions the importance of our founding fathers, or brothers, to out country today. Ellis intention of writing this book was to show how the road to creating The Constitution required a lot of arguments and challenges along the way. As stated in the introduction, Ellis main argument in this book is that the success that the USA has today was not a foregone conclusion or certain at that time period. In addition, the Founding Brothers decided not to talk about slavery or abolish it. Ellis is able to portray how the founding fathers felt that keeping the union together was more important than the issue of slavery, due to the South wanting to keep slaves. However, an argument can be made that slavery should have had more importance over a united North and South, as it was the humane approach, and the success of the North could have been a foregone conclusion . An operating lease is similar to a rental agreement so there is no long term liability on the balance sheet. It allows the lessee to engage in off balance sheet financing. This provides several benefits for the company to maintain a good financial position. When a company enters a capital lease the asset is reported on the balance sheet. This results in the debt to total equity increasing and the rate of return on total assets to decrease. The ratios can negatively affect financing opportunities, the corporate bond covenants, and management compensation incentives (Schroeder, Clark, amp; Cathey, 2011). In addition, the depreciation required on the asset in a capital lease will result in a deferred tax. The funds from operations on the cash flow statement will be higher by the deferred tax when a capital lease is used (Ingberman, Ronen, amp; Sorter, 1979). The cash from the operations section on the cash flow must be reconciled to remove noncash items during the period (Kieso, Weygandt, amp; Warfield, 2007). This was a way for them to join the fight against the axis powers. This particular war is noted as the most brutal war throughout all of history. Out of the men who registered to draft, many of them were also involved in what would be called the most popular battle of the Second World War, or the invasion of Normandy. The Invasion of Normandy, other wise referred to as D Day occurred June 6th 1944 when allied forces invaded the border of Normandy and pushed the German forces back through France. Over one hundred thousand American, British, and Canadian forces landed on several beaches along the region. While the German numbers had already greatly thinned due to the war in Russia, D Day and the Allies continued the further ruin of their troops. The victory over the Axis powers was accomplished through the efforts of all those within the allied powers including Britain and Canada however, the main focus of this research is the United States involvement in the D Day invasion. • 22. Modernism In Taxi Driver Modernism is an art movement that became increasingly popular towards the end of the 1800 s. This is a movement that followed the likes of the renaissance and romanticism. It encouraged the avant garde and the expression of new ideas with a rejection of the past but was not confined to a specific style. There are many art theories that flourished in the modern era and many were created as reactions to others. Examples of modern art movements are impressionism, expressionism, dada, surrealism and more. The modern era, however, lasted until the late 1900 s where everything so forth became known as contemporary art. This, in all simplicity, is a period of art that has been created today. It is largely debated as to when this movement started but some say that it was initiated by Andy Warhol and Pop Art. Films, theatres, and paintings created in this contemporary period owe much of its inspiration from the influences of the modern era. The sutta, he said, is very obvious in rejecting the bad and adopting the good way... the place of critical examination and analysis in the development of right vision. Buddha s insight into the matter of judgment is beyond our normal understanding. As the four solaces show that a noble life is not about faith in rebirth and retribution. Instead, it is about happiness of the mind by conquering our own avarice, enmity, and ignorance. Basically, the teaching is for everyone. Soma Thera concluded his essay by citing a short conversation between Moncure D. Conway and Ponnambalam Ramanathan, who follow different faiths but come together and listen to the discourse of the Kālāmas and profess this good doctrine is essential to humanity development. However, scholar and monastic Bhikkhu Bodhi has a different perspective on the Kālāma Sutta. In his essay A Look at the Kalama ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Decline in Union Membership has Helped to Improve Industrial Harmony Assess whether the decline in Union membership has helped to improve industrial harmony. From 1979, the British labour market has experienced an era of de unionisation that is still occurring at present. In 1979, 53% of workers were union members (Machin, 2000) and by 2004 only 27% of all workers were affiliated to a union. In the 10 year period between 1991 and 2001, there has been a fall in membership of 15% (Labour Market Trends, 2001) Trade Union Memberships, Britain, 1989 2003 Source: office of national statistics The historically low figures seem to indicate continually improving industrial relations in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Why would a worker belong to a trade union? Trade Union s use their collective identity to help individuals receive the best treatment from their employers; in working conditions, and matters of pay and entitlements. Unions work for their members to ensure wage mark ups are in line with the changes in the economy and in harmony with expectations of the workers. A by product of a trade unions work is to influence a more equitable dispersion of wages in the economy. All the outlined objectives appear only to be positive, making it questionable as to why union membership would decline for any reason other than the opinion that working conditions are good and a union s interference is considered unnecessary. In fact, there are several reasons for the decline in trade union membership that are not directly due to improved relations at work. The composition of the labour force has dramatically changed in Britain where the 1970 s tradition of the working class male in industrial heartlands has been replaced with equal proportions of men and women now working in a predominantly service based economy. The compositional factors of de industrialisation and the increase in female participation have undoubtedly lowered membership ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 37. Catalase And Hydrogen Peroxide Reaction Lab Report Catalase and Hydrogen Peroxide Experiment How do living cells interface with the earth around them? Every living thing have impetuses, or substances inside of them that accelerate concoction responses and procedures. Proteins are atoms that empower the substance responses that happen in every single living thing on earth. In this catalase and hydrogen peroxide test, we will find how compounds go about as impetuses by bringing on synthetic responses to happen all the more rapidly inside of living things. Utilizing a potato and hydrogen peroxide, we can watch how compounds like catalase work to perform disintegration, or the separating, of different substances. Catalase attempts to accelerate the deterioration of hydrogen peroxide into oxygen ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Keep one segment crude and at room temperature. Sufficiently empty hydrogen peroxide into the container with the goal that potato is submerged and watch. Rehash steps 5 and 6 with the boiled and solidified potato areas. Amount Begin with about 40 grams of peeled potato and blend it in about 100ml of water and ice. Mix this well and add 1 ml to a test tube. Test tubes of 10 to 15ml work well. Add several drops of H2O2 to the potato blend in the bottom of the test tube. Perceptions and Results Watch each of the potato/hydrogen peroxide blends and record what happens. The percolating response you see is the metabolic procedure of disintegration, portrayed prior. This response is brought on by catalase, a catalyst inside of the potato. This was the foundation of the genocide. In April of 2003, rebels from the DLF attacked the Sudanese air force base in Al Fashir. The DLF divided into two units: the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army (SLM/A) and the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM). In July 2003, militias were formed by nomadic Arab tribes. They were named the Janjaweed, which means devil on horseback in Arab. So many colonists died at Jamestown in the beginning because of lack of commit, native American attacks and poor environment conditions.
