Sources of Air Pollution in Sidney
Motor vehicle emissions remain the highest source of air pollution in Australian major cities with
Sydney holding the record for the worst air quality in Australia. Although Sydney has comparatively
better levels of air quality compared to other major cities in the world, air pollution is still a major
environmental and health issue. The NSW Department of Environment and Climate Change have put
the cost of this issue to human health at more than $4.7 billion each year in the greater metropolitan
area. Health experts have also estimated that air pollution cause up to 1400 deaths per year in Sydney
alone, and up to 2000 hospital admissions for respiratory and cardiovascular illnesses. In a 2004
statement by the CSIRO, the mortality rate due to air pollution in Australia (approximately 2,400
deaths each year at the time) was higher than the road toll (approximately 1,700 deaths each year at
the time), and these estimates have only risen in recent years as medical science gains a better
understanding of the link between air pollution, health problems, and the significant cost to our
economy. The cause of this pollution can be put down to Sydney s ever growing vehicle numbers.
According to the NSW Government s 2009 State of The Environment Report, vehicle ownership
growth now outstrips the population growth as each household is now estimated to own 1.49 cars and
take 16.3 million car trips totalling 132 million kilometres daily. Hence a combination of both
economic incentives and

A Comparison of Exxon and Chevron
Executive Summary Exxon and Chevron are no doubt some of the leading incorporated oil companies
on the globe. Exxon Corp. is the second largest oil firm after Royal Dutch Shell, it is respected for
getting the biggest revenue return in 2008 which no company in the U.S. have ever reported before.
According to Wilson (2009) Chevron has managed to show a lot of profitability in the market despite
the decease in its oil production. It graded as one of firms which made a billion dollars profit within a
week in the period of July to September 2008. Regardless of profitability trends set by the two oil
firms in the U.S. market, they have been facing financial decline like the rest of the companies in other
industries. The two firms are like two sailing ships which are taking longer time to sink. In the last few
years, the production capacity of Chevron and Exxon has decreased and their listings on the stock
market have become weak. The continuation of construction and drilling which requires billions of
dollars in expense of oil production might make them experience a bigger financial crisis (Wilson,
2009). Exxon and Chevron are so different in a number of ways. When you compare Chevron to
Exxon, Chevron is a smaller firm. The ratios of Exxon are relatively larger than Chevron s.
Nevertheless, Chevron has a got a wide net working capital and market ratio than its counterpart
Exxon. This therefore, means that because its larger networking capital, Chevron needs a lot of money

I Define The Nature Of Judgmental Essay
As an observer from the east, Chen Cheng had many preconceived values granted by his biography.
Inevitably, these values are recognizable in his portraits of the Timurid world. In five major aspects
did Chen Cheng appear to be judgmental. I define the nature of judgmental as shown by negative, or
occasionally, positive, semantic fields characterized by the usages of adjectives and descriptive
sentences. Every case of being judgmental hints at Chen Cheng s unique background that tells the
readers both about the Confucian tradition of China and about the daily scene of the Timurid society.
Chen Cheng was harsh in criticizing the necessary protocols performed by the ordinary inhabitants.
He wrote:
Every occasion when people meet, [they] do not display any protocol, only bowing slightly and almost
invisibly to each other.... If two haven t met for a while, or when people get to know each other for the
first time, they perform so called advanced protocol, kneeling down one of the legs.... When there is
feast or gathering, ruler and his subjects, males and females, the elderly and the young all sit in a
circular podium without a sense of shame.
Chen Cheng obviously evaluated the Timurid social scene as barbarian and rustic. Even though people
greet each other by some sort of protocol, Chen Cheng naturally disdained it as if there was nothing
carried out. Under the Chinese imperial examination system, the textbook materials were the Four
Books and Five Classics

Cuban Immigrants And The Cuban Adjustment Act Essay
INTRODUCTION:
Even though Cuba is a little under 100 miles away from the United States, the relationship between
the two countries has created an atmosphere full of tension and perpetual mistrust. When Fidel Castro
decided to align Cuba with the U.S.S.R. and become a communist country, the United States of
America was stunned and highly insulted. Because of their relationship, both countries have played a
back and forth game of trying to outdo the other. This game and state of affairs in Cuba has created a
large influx of Cuban immigrants looking for better opportunities and trying to escape poverty and
persecution. This paper will be focusing on Cuban immigrants and examining different Cuban
immigration laws, which allowed them to easily become United States citizens, including; the Cuban
Adjustment Act, The Immigration and Nationality Act Amendments of 1976 and the Wet Foot, Dry
Foot Policy. It will also discuss whether the Cuban immigration laws are unfair to other foreign
immigrants and whether the laws are relevant today. Finally, we will be considering the future and try
to predict how the laws will change with the changing diplomatic relations between Cuba and the
United States and the imminent removal of the Embargo Act.
CUBAN IMMIGRATION LAWS:
The Cuban Adjustment Act was enacted in 1966. The Act allowed illegal Cuban immigrants, who
were already living in the United States for two years prior, to easily gain their citizenship. It also fast

The Media s Ability to Control Our View of the World Essay
With the coming of television and the internet, are we or are we not a more informed community?
(Orwell, 1984) Essentially, this statement requires a profound study in order to determine the impact
of news media ability to control the agenda and ultimately impact our view of the world.
First, let us differentiate these two sources of communication because there is a major difference
between television and internet as a mass media communicating tool. Television focuses more on
broad commercial needs of people and is highly dependent on paid advertisement compared to the
internet, which is closer to very specific needs. In other words, television advertisement and
programming are tailor made to get a larger audience in order ... Show more content on

Therefore the context in which advertisement operates relates to news mass media s ability to
influence people.
The influence of advertisement is proportional to the frequency of repetition of the same message.
People in the advertisement business, often call advertisement by using the word media.
Advertisement or media is achieved by printing newspapers and magazines; or spoken announcement
in television and radiobroadcasts; or display posters on the internet. (Previte, 1999)
There are various rating methods used to estimate the number of people who listen to any particular
advertisement. This is very important in order to establish the cost of the product advertised. The
Sponsor paying for the advertisement is usually required to contract for a series of programs. These
programs have to be acceptable to the media used to display the advertisement. The advertisers are
remunerated accordingly in proportion to the rating the program. Specialized firms do the rating
independently, in order to avoid conflict of interest. The rating determines the cost of the message and
is proportional to the number of people reached. (Morehead, 1966)
The hypothesis formulated in this paper is that news media s ability to control the agenda and impact
our world views is not as important as it seems.

Examples Of Reconciliation In Australia
The Freedom Ride and Tent Embassy are both extremely significant events and had long lasting
impacts on reconciliation and the plight of the indigenous. Reconciliation in Australia is the movement
aimed at building unity between Indigenous and non Indigenous Australians. The Tent Embassy was
established on the 26th of January 1972, positioned across from what was then Parliament House, in
Canberra, where Indigenous activists protested for equality and land rights. For similar reasons, was
the Australian Freedom Ride (1965) inspired by the American Civil Rights movements when a group
of students from the University of Sydney travelled around Western NSW in a bus also aimed to raise
awareness and encourage resistance against discrimination and poor standards of living conditions of
Indigenous Australians.
Both examples of political activism through the Tent Embassy and Freedom Ride was significant and
effective in accelerating the movement towards indigenous equality and reconciliation in Australia.

The first de facto government after the swearing in of the Argentina Constitution of 1853 , was that of
General Bartolome Mitre, who took office after winning the battle of Pavon in September 1861. In the
twentieth century there were a series of military uprisings that broke the constitutional order. While
the democratic government of Hipolito Yrigoyen was elected by a large majority, opponents were
busy making a smear campaign such that no one reacted to the uprising that brought to power General
Jose Felix Uriburu , who was recognized as president de facto by the Supreme Court in a Acordada

Great Expectations Changes
Great Expectations by Charles Dickens is a classic American novel. Great Expectations is about the
protagonist, Pip, and how he matures into a gentleman throughout the entire story. Pip s adventure
begins in in the foggy marshes of Kent, England when Pip was just a common boy. Pip grows from an
innocent child to an experienced gentleman. Pip s relationship with Magwitch changes throughout the
novel as Pip develops into a gentleman. At the beginning of the novel, Pip s relationship with
Magwitch haunts Pip, but their bond grows to be very beneficial and concrete for Pip. In the first stage
of Pip s great expectations, Pip meets Magwitch. While Pip is paying his respects to his parents in the
cemetery, a tattered and bruised convict approaches him. We can tell Pip is frightened by the way
Charles Dickens describes the setting as foggy. The fog is used to symbolize danger and uncertainty.

then arrested and put into jail. He loses his trial and is sentenced to death. But in the prison, Magwitch
falls ill. On the day of his death, Pip comforts Magwitch by telling him that his long lost daughter,
Estella, is alive and well. Pip shows how concrete his relationship with Magwitch is when he says, I
will never stir from your side, said I, when I am suffered to be near you. (Dickens 667.) This is a great
example of Pip and Magwitch s unique bond. Even though this bond proved to be very beneficial to
Pip, it was still a burden to

There Should Be Moderated Always Analysis
Is it really necessary to comment on someone else s page to bother and hurt the other person?
Comments should be moderated always because comments get out of control, makes the other person
upset and it starts to become something normal to people.
Comments should be moderated always because comments get out of control easily. People start
commenting on YouTube channels giving their opinion and another person comes and starts
commenting negative things. Then another person sees someone else trolling and they want to do the
same. For example, every time I go to a YouTube channel there s always someone who comments
negative things and then a lot of people comment back and they don t stop until the youtuber blocks
the comment sections. Another Example, would be I think that it started with a pretty clear defenition

Youtubers or people involved in social media get told things that upset them in a way that they want to
quit what they re doing instead of ignoring them. They are emotionally harmed by what others say to
them. Trollers make negative comments on purpose to hurt other people. For example It s heck of a lot
of work to get a lot of people angry. It s not in the best interest of a publication or writer s care to do
that. But maybe I m naïve.(D addario 422) This shows that it s hard for people on social media to
cause such hate on trollers that they would want to waste their time by commenting negative things.
Another Example would be Trolling provokes a reaction, usually negative. Trolling is apparently quite
easy to do. But, if only to better grid one s own defenses against it what is trolling?(D addario 421)
Every person is different and they might take the negative comments especially if the same person
keeps bothering them with the same thing all over again. They also start to get depressed and may start

Disadvantages Of Online Recruiting
The Advantage and Disadvantage of Online Recruiting
After completing the chapters reading at Bethel University, this student have learned that more and
more companies are utilizing online recruiting as there main source of hiring process for their
organizations. Online job sites have transformed the recruitment landscape for both employers and job
seekers and largely increased the efficiency with which hiring decisions can take place. In addition to
the now conventional social networking recruitment tools, recruiters may find the use of more targeted
association sites to help narrow the candidate pool and make sure efforts are not being wasted on
uninterested parties. Local business forums, supported by a city or regional website, frequently have
job boards hosting local businesses and may also keep member directories and contact information
useful to recruiters. Industry sites typically have databases of resumes and direct discussion
environments that can facilitate direct electronic contact with a candidate. As for this adult student,
one would be more attracted to company that uses online recruiting methods for their hiring process.
Bethel, (2011), Online recruitment is the process of using the Internet to actively seek out and recruit
talented candidates for an organization. The Internet has quickly become one of the primary
recruitment tools for both internal recruitment and talent acquisition committees and third party
companies (p.144).

But, they reject the idea of Jihad against innocent Muslims such as the terrorist attacks against Iraqi
civilians.
Liberal Muslim political organizations are against the idea of Jihad; they want to establish good
relations with other foreign countries based on respectful bonds that, among other things, will help in
the mutual development of economies and educational systems. The idea of Jihad will considered if a
real threat on their country already happened.
All non Muslims governments and parties in the world are against Jihad because they are likely to
become one of its targets and will lead to high civilian costs of life among the populations and the
degradation of civil rights that have been established. Since Jihad is affecting the whole world morally
and mentally, someone could ask Is Jihad ethical? Jihad could be examined by three philosophical
principles such as Natural Law, Utilitarianism and Categorical Imperative. In order to analyze Jihad
according to the three philosophical principles, a preview of each principle should be available.
Natural law is an ethical prospective that deals with Nature and religious beliefs. According to this
principle, anything came from nature or happened because of nature s causes should be ethical. Also,
it s related to GOD and religion, an action could be considered ethical

The Vietnam war lasted from 1955 to 1975. Many Vietnamese and American lives were lost during

School Dropout s Rates From City
All these is done to convince the readers that millions of children are out of school in Pakistan. The
readers feels sympathetic a lot about these issue Basically, Azam attributes poor government plans,
lack of resources, poor education schemes and poor planning to this menace of poor enrolment and
absence of learners from. The author of this article employs the use of some reasons and logic appeals
in an attempt to lure the audience to read the article and identify with it. For instance, it was show that
the rate of enrolled children from Grade one to five maximum, but the retention rate is only 67%.
Also, the primary enrollment is 58% in Pakistan and the target of 100%. There are example that show
the logic of low enrolment. There are different between school dropout s rates from city to other. For
example, Balochi stanand Sindh are highest population of school dropout s children, the rates about
66% of children in Balochistanand 51% in Sindh are not in school, however, Punjaband K P show low
rates of dropout s children by 47% and 34% children out of school. Lastly, inthe Federally
Administered Tribal regions (FATA), 62% are not in school, in Gilgit Baltistan 48% not in school. And
about 43% of same kids live in Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
The use of tables and pictures also act as another appeal in this article. In this case, Azam uses a chart
to indicate the rate of literacy in Pakistan and also the rate of primary school enrolment in the same
country (Azam).

Capacit Capacity
The process analytics simulation that we started in class was an interesting and practical
demonstration and actual application of process flow analysis. The first problem which we performed
in small groups within the class, was laid out very simply as a set of sequential processes, each with
individual characteristics, that are ordered in pre determined process that when complete, produces
one production unit. The initial concepts demonstrated were those of cycle time, throughput, capacity,
utilization and bottleneck. Cycle time reflects the average time it takes for units to complete the
process once the process gets running. (Leonard, 2007, p. 10). Generally the cycle time will be
determined by the longest process in a sequential flow. Throughput is the amount of time it takes to
complete the first unit. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(Leonard, 2007, p. 11) Utilization is the mathematical calculation of process throughput over process
capacity with the average of the individual process utilization rates being the overall utilization rate.
(Leonard, 2007, p. 18) . The utilization rate was the hardest for the group to grasp until they
effectively understood that the bottleneck, the process that limits the overall capacity of the system
being measured (Leonard, 2007, p. 18), is always the process that is running at 100% utilization, and
all other processes utilization is calculated on the basis of this bottleneck process. The remainder of
problem 1 in the simulation was emphasizing the importance identifying the bottleneck and
calculating the effects of changing the process when you change the bottleneck and when you change
other factors. If you affect the bottleneck than you effect process. If the bottleneck remains unchanged
than the overall efficiency of the process does not

Cavour was a very important, if not key player in the reunification of Italy in the 1800s. His role in
Italian unification is widely debated, as are is aims and underlying motives. Many hold contrasting
views as to whether he was an Italian nationalist or merely a Piedmontese expansionist, and the
subject is still a controversial one to this day. The existence of many wide ranging sources which often
challenge each other on the subject does not make the task of determining what drove Cavour any
easier for scholars. It is often agreed, however, that Cavour was a very important catalyst in the
unification of Italy, wittingly or not. In this essay I shall examine Cavour s role in Italy in the period
between 1852 and 1861, and attempt to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is of interest to note that Napoleon III had been a member of the secret Carbonari society in the
Papal States and elsewhere during 1930 1931, which sought to win liberal, constitutional and national
reform. This coupled with the fact that foreign action in support of Italy would also win him support at
home and that his attempted assassination involved him more deeply in Italian politics, means that
Napoleon s support for Cavour was almost guaranteed. It is probable that Cavour knew this, and thus
took full advantage of the fact.
By now it seemed Cavour had earned himself some adversaries as well, however, such as prominent
political figures Giuseppe Mazzini and Pallavicino. An illustration of this rivalry lies in this extract of
a letter Mazzini sent to Cavour in 1856:
Between you and us, sir, an abyss yawns. We represent Italy, you the old, covetous, faint hearted
ambitions of the house of Savoy. We desire above all National Unity. You, territorial aggrandisement
for Piedmont...
This shows that Cavour was already under suspicion from hard line republicans and Italian
nationalists to be supporting Piedmont more than Italy as a whole.
His next actions did not help to improve his image with them, however, as can be seen by the
Plombieres pact of 1858. This was a secret meeting between Napoleon and Cavour in which a deal
was struck: In exchange for

Essay On Pet Peeves
Everyone has a pet peeve no matter how weird it can possibly be. Someone could have a pet peeve of

dislike, I m sure some people will be able to accept it and eventually deal with it. However, the Earth
doesn t revolve around those people, so they too need to get over their ridiculous peeves and just deal
with it. I have pet peeves I guess I should get over, but maybe people should also take heed to them
and be aware that I dislike what bothers me. As in, I can t stand it when people correct me, or don t

Annotated In The Sage Of Theare
In The Sage of Theare , a child, Thasper is born, and is prophesized to be the Sage of Dissolution, a
title that is much unwanted in the world because it brings disorder. Thasper is transferred to a different
world to grow up in but once he hears of stories about the Sage of Dissolution, he travels to learn more
about this mysterious character. Although The Sage of Theare takes place in a fictional world, Diana
Wynne Jones creates a world of order by using diction, as well as personal experiences to bring light
to how current society mimics the social context of the story.
The world on Earth is constructed very differently from the world of Theare but the people that reside
in both worlds have the same tendencies to want order. On Earth, ... Show more content on

In an interview that she had, she said, The Sage of Theare started because I remembered, or thought I
remembered, a story by Borges being read on the radio, in which a scholar arduously tracked down a
learned man but never quite found him. I started having dreams about it strange circular dreams in a
strange city where gods took a hand and the dream person never found the wise man he was looking
for. In order to exorcise the dreams, I wrote the story. Here, the rhetor s original purpose of writing
this story was to get rid of her strange dreams. However, this adds on to the idea that people are
uncomfortable with disorder because her strange dreams deviate from the norm and she wants it to
disappear. This is similar to the story because the gods that live in Theare hate disorder. Also, because
the rhetor wrote this in the time that she did, many events that occurred during the 1980s in Britain
might have influenced the way she wrote this story and why she wrote it. As mentioned previously,
Britain experienced political unrest during this time. There were many riots sparked by racial tensions,
local problems, and poor relations between predominantly black communities and the police. There
was also conflict in prisons as prisoners started a hunger strike to protest the right to be treated as
political prisoners, resulting in 61 deaths. Not only that, economic recession in Britain during this time
resulted in high unemployment rates of up to three million unemployed citizens. Because Diana
Wynne Jones wrote The Sage of Theare during this time, the story reflects some aspects of these
events. For example, the world of Theare is crafted to be a utopian society, a world of order where
there is no chaos. The rhetor might have chosen to depict Theare in this way as a distraction from what
is actually going on in the real world. In this fantasy world, everything

The Effect Of Pef On Biological Cells
In general, the primary effect of PEF on biological cells is the changes in the structure and the
breakdown of cell membranes, which is mainly responsible for mass transfer, and several other
metabolic activities in the cell (Ade Omowaye, Angersbach, Taiwo, Knorr, 2001). The cell membrane
is considered as a capacitor filled with dielectric material of low electrical conductance, and
accumulation of charges with opposite polarity in both sides of membrane form a membrane potential.
However, when the overall potential exceeds 1V, the elctro compressive force cause dielectric rupture
of membrane leads to formation of pores/micro holes in the membrane (Schoenbach, Peterkin, Alden,
Beebe, 1997). Changes in the cell membrane can lead to form reversible or irreversible pores in the
cell membrane and ultimate loss of cell viability. On the other hand, voltage sensitive protein channels
would be opened when PEF applied and subject to much larger currents which generally have during
cell metabolic activities. Consequently, protein channels could be irreversibly denatured (Castro,
Barbosa Canovas, Swanson, 1993). Barsotti and Cheftel. (1999) have stated that pore inversion
generally occurs under an applied electric field with the expansion of hydrophobic pore.
As Weaver and Chizmadzhev. (1996) stated, at low strength electric fields ( 200 V cm−1), and short
pulse duration (10−5 10−6 s), the electrical breakdown could be reversed, and repair the damages after

three stars. This article also presents general references, which are statements that are not clearly pro

On the con side, ProCon has seven points, fours of which have earned ProCon s expert rating. The
first expert, Jeffrey Patterson brings up the fact that nuclear material can be used for more than just
power plants. In Patterson s point he mentions the use of the material as a devastating weapon. He
questions whether or not humans can be trusted to use nuclear material only for good, not as a
weapon. Helen Caldicott goes against previous claims that nuclear power plants release miniscule
amounts of radiation. Caldicott claims that nuclear power plants are lying about being emission free
and that they actually release millions of curies (the standard unit of radioactivity measurement)
annually. Jim Riccio, a member of Greenpeace believes that every reactor in the US should be shut
down because that is the best way to avoid the next nuclear accident in the United States.

the argument. The website also has a good way of telling which sources have the most insight versus
others. Even though the article may have more pro arguments, it makes up for this by providing a
higher percentage of experts on the con side. Finally, the article also uses its general references to give

How Does Maus Conform To Art Spiegelman
Art Spiegelman s genre transcending work
Maus is a graphic novel by Art Spiegelman, serialized from 1980 to 1991. It tells the story of Art
Spiegelman s father, Vladek, a Polish Jew and Holocaust survivor; it tells the story of the relationship
between Art and his father, complicated by his father s Holocaust trauma; and Maus tells the story of
the relationship between Art and his artwork. A remarkable work, Maus is for sure. Not only is the use
of a comic book format daring for a horrible topic as the Holocaust, Maus also defies definition in
terms of genre. A biography, memoir, autobiography, history, or a mix of genres? Fiction or non

This process results in exact coppies of DNA molecules. The amplified samples of DNA were placed

event of violent crimes, small samples such as hair, skin, seamen, blood, or urine can give
investigators a sort of genetic fingerprint of the criminal. The first step in employing the methods
discussed above to replicate and investigate DNA was to obtain a sample. Our samples were obtained
by plucking hair from students in our class. The root of the hair was isolated and placed into a small

Differences Between Of Mice And Men Movie And Movie

Usually people say that the book is always better than the movie. Of Mice and Men is just like that. Of
Mice and Men is an excellent story about two ranch workers who have a dream. This movie is
directed by Gary Sinise, and he also plays the role of George. The two main characters Lennie (John

In the book and the movie, the theme that is portrayed is loneliness. In the book, John Steinbeck did a
great job of saying that if Lennie and George didn t have each other then they would both be
extremely lonely. The movie director did the same exact thing. The movie director made it obvious
that both Lennie and George are lonely because they only have each other. This made the audience
feel that they are lonely and that made the movie meaningful. The story line was very good, but it was
not the same as the book. The director made a good choice with having the intro be with the girl in the
red dress because if they did that in the middle of the movie as a flashback, then that would have made
it confusing for the audience. This choice was good and even better than the book because it made the
story line easier to understand. In all, The Movie Of Mice and Men was very good. The Sound was
phenomenal, the story line was great, and the Characters were absolutely fantastic. The movie could
have been better if they did better with cinematography. Although the Cinematography did have a
great effect on the movie, it was somewhat good. The movie was very exceptional, and the director

Physical Appearance In Frankenstein
From hundreds of years until now, there are many serious issues concerning human interactions that
have been discussed in different ways and can be seen in countless pieces of work such as the novel
Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. In this novel, Shelley wrote about various themes that are significant in
understanding the concept of fitting in with society and human interactions with one another and with
ones self. She was trying to get across important themes that are still relevant today, including the
theme of physical appearance. The theme of physical appearance is shown many times in the novel
and illustrates how people are judged and discriminated according to how they look and the
consequences it may have on individuals.

The Birthmark Symbolism
The Mortal of the Story
By looking at symbolism in The Birthmark, the reader can interpret that the birthmark is a symbol for
imperfection and mortality which is not obvious to most people. This is important because it turns the
birthmark into something all readers can relate to since no one is perfect. Georgiana s birthmark was
the fatal flaw of humanity which Nature, in one shape or another, stamps ineffaceably on all her
productions (Hawthorne 12). As stated before, nothing is perfect, Nature has a flaw on everything and
Georgiana s was her birthmark. Her husband, Aylmer, notices the birthmark and also sees it as an
imperfection even though other men would often tell her it was a charm. No, dearest Georgiana, you
came so nearly perfect from the hand of Nature that this slightest possible defect, which we hesitate
whether to term a defect or a beauty, shocks me, as being the visible mark of earthly imperfection
(Hawthorne 11). Aylmer at first is the only one, other from jealous women, to point out her birthmark
as an imperfection but his constant talk began to make her believe she was in fact flawed. This is
important because it ultimately leads to the death of Georgiana.
Once Georgiana also begins to view her birthmark as an imperfection, just like Aylmer does, she
begins to hate it and demands it be removed. Remove it, remove it, whatever be the cost, or we shall
both go mad! (Hawthorne 21). Georgiana is sacrificing everything she can in order for this birthmark
to be removed, even death. Aylmer warns her of the dangers of performing such a surgery but she
refuses to think it over and believes she is most fit to die (Hawthorne 21). Of all mortals, she believes
that she has reached her potential in the world and there is no more use for her on the world unless she
is perfect, with no birthmark and no imperfections.
Although her and Aylmer hate the birthmark, some of her past lovers and some readers might view it
as unique, possibly as a symbol for her personality. The birthmark is something that separates her from
others and makes her stand out, probably why all of the women hate her birthmark, they are jealous of
her uniqueness. But Aylmer can t help but to focus on the birthmark and it s

The Incans were not only powerful, but also very advanced. They created arguably the most advanced

How Did The Navajo Code Talkers Help The Allies
There was a group of Navajo men, called Code Talkers, that played a major part in helping the Allies
in World War II. Their work was so successful for multiple reasons.
Code Talkers were Navajo men who used their native language to develop a code that was
indecipherable to Japanese cryptologists. In the beginning there were twenty nine Navajo men
creating the codes, called the Original 29, but several hundred Navajos would join and learn the code.
For years the Navajos were unable to speak of what they did in the war, but now they ve been given
authorization to tell their tale. Their code played a major part in helping the Allies win the war. The
article states that, The group participated in every assault the Marines conducted in the Pacific,
sending thousands of covert messages regarding the movements of Japanese troops, battlefield tactics,
and other details that would prove critical to the war s ultimate outcome, proving that the Code ...

The reason being that the Navajos native language was unwritten. The article explains, After basic
training in 1942, Nez s platoon was tasked with developing a code, based on the then unwritten
Navajo language. Using Navajo words for red soil, war chief, clan, braided hair, beads, ant, and
hummingbird, for example, the Original 29 came up with an alphabet and a glossary of more than 200
terms. This shows that because the language was unwritten, you d have to know the language to even
have a chance of figuring out the codes. The Code Talkers were the walking carriers of the code and
each message that was read by a Code Talker, was destroyed immediately afterwards. The Navajo
code was so indecipherable, that a Navajo soldiers that had been captured by the Japanese, couldn t
decipher it. The article states that, After the war, the soldier told one of the Code Talkers, I never

Theme Of Relationships In Of Mice And Men
Of Mice and Men is a film which was produced in 1992 but set in 1937 during the Great Depression
in the United States. Spies (by Michael Frayn) was published in 2002 and mainly set during World
War II. George Milton and Lennie Small from Of Mice and Men are migrant workers who travel
around California looking for work. These characters are unusual because the majority of migrant
workers at this time were loners whereas these characters are best friends. They are also so different
from each other which also makes them unusual. Stephen Wheatley and Keith Hayward from Spies
also maintained a friendship, different to George and Lennie s. Stephen feels as if Keith had total
superiority but turned a blind eye to it. Stephen and Keith were adolescent boys who spied on Keith s
mother. Both texts explore the theme of relationship and power, but in different ways. Of Mice and
Men explores the theme of relationship through different characters, but mainly through George and
Lennie. Their friendship was unique as during the Great Depression, it was rare to see ranch workers
stick together and form friendships the way George and Lennie had. Lennie was portrayed as a grown
man with a childish mind, which was why he was so dependent on George. This was a positive
relationship in this text even though George demanded Lennie around, it was for his own good. The
different camera techniques in this text help capture the essence of their relationship which include
over the shoulder shots and

John F Kennedy Single Shot Hypothesis
John F. Kennedy and John Connally were struck by one bullet, or that s what we think. The slug went
through JFK s back left through his throat and injured Connally s wrist and thigh. The way of travel
was considered on and is hypothesized exceedingly doubtful by most skeptics of the single shot
hypothesis. The likeliness of JFK and Connally being struck by the same projectile is conceivable yet,
is unrealistic. The single slug hypothesis does not dispose of additional shots, or different slugs hitting
the president. Most witnesses and agents accept that a measure of three aggregate shots was
discharged. Whether those additional shots were shot by Oswald or by an alternate shooter potentially

Condorcet (1979) wrote man will not become immortal, but cannot the span constant increase between

Crossing Brooklyn Ferry Poem Analysis
Walt Whitman´s poem Crossing Brooklyn Ferry uses the theme of time to communicate a sense of
Trancendentalist unity. Whitman s Transcendentalist speaker enters the appearances and usual
costumes of the universe of wonders keeping in mind the end goal to find the truth that ties each and
all together in one
The speaker, as The title already indicates taking a ferry in New York, does not waste any time before
presenting the idea that all humans are united in their common experience. The narrator imagines
those who will cross the river in the future, this could also indicate a metaphor for the overall journey
of a human life. He is very optimistic and at ease :He and also everyone else is to him a part of the

What the push of reading could not start is started by me personally, is it not? In the last section of the
poem ,once again all the images of the ferry ride are one by one reprised and united together like „The
glories strung like beads on my smallest sights and hearings It serves to help the reader to remember
all that preceded. While before he demonstrated things independently, blended with his own
contemplations, here he consolidates them into one major celebration.
This segment, and the whole poem, comes full circle in a last stanza where Whitman utilizes the
pronoun we again, as though the reader and the speaker have at last been joined together. We are now
able to see the world with new perspective or „free sense When something has been encountered, that
experience stays with the individual:„We use you, and do not cast you aside we plant you/
permanently within us/We fathom you not we love you there is perfection in you also

What Is The Idea Of Justice In Frankenstein
Under normal circumstances, the monster should not receive justice because he violates socially
accepted rules. This makes it easier to disregard Victor s and the other s actions toward him because
their actions do not overlook social laws and seem necessary. In turn, the monster becomes less
likeable and harder to sympathize with as the narrative continues. However, as the monster brings up
in one of his final speeches, society goes against fundamental Christian rules of acceptance and
welcoming others by not receiving him. Before his death, the monster asserts Am I to be thought the
only criminal, when all human kind sinned against me? Why do you not hate Felix, who drove his
friend from the door with contumely? Why do you not execrate ... Show more content on

His story and outlook on life highlights the tension between him and society, while synchronously
pitting them against one another and bringing them together, thus making it difficult to determine who
is truly in the wrong. The monster s predicament highlights how justice is never truly a fair concept
because it cannot be equitable for everyone involved; there is inevitably a winner and a loser. Shelley
masterfully plays upon this notion, recognizing this holds true for the most basic and extreme
situations, illustrating that good and evil are intertwined, making justice incredibly difficult to achieve
and oftentimes much closer connected than first thought. The monster s quest for justice brings depth
and conflict to the story by underlining that while justice is not always fair, it can be deserved by all.
Yet by the Gothic undertones that are present in the story, the tragedy lies in the fact that the monster,
though helpless and lonely his entire life, can never have justice as he is doomed to repel it from the
moment his life

rules of another. At this age children have a sense of moral realism. This means that they believe all
elements of morality such as rules and punishments come from an external source and exist in their
own right. Due to this they see things as clearly right or wrong as they are told is the case. From the
age of 10 the morality of a child is autonomous. Autonomous means this is where the starts to believe
that they are subject to one s own laws and rules. This stage involves moral relativism. This is where
the child starts to understand that rules come from social relationships and they know the importance

Kohlberg believed that we must have an understanding of justice as that represents the most
fundamental moral principle. Kohlberg gave a group of subjects a number of moral dilemma s
between 2 or more moral principles and asked them to choose between them. The dilemma s used
involved 10 universal moral issues which were punishment, property, law, roles and concerns of
affection, authority, life, liberty, distributive justice, sex and truth. From this experiment Kohlberg
formulated this theory of moral development.
Kohlberg s theory of moral development involved three levels with each level having two stages.
The earlier of these levels are consistent to Piaget s stages of cognitive development. The three levels
in Kohlberg s theory are the pre †conventional included up to and above the age of 9, The
conventional model which included most adolescents and adults and finally the post conventional

The Startling Plight Of China s Leftover Ladies Summary
Jinzhao Li WR098 Steinberg Sept. 20. 2014 Christina Larsen s article The Startling Plight of China s
Leftover Ladies (2012) can be said to be a presentation of the pervasive efforts of society to control
the bodies of women. It should be noted that in many societies women can even be forced to be
married even against their will under pain severe punishment such as death. In this case, in the
Chinese situation as reported by Larsen, the means of control is more of persuasion with the use of
derogatory language that nevertheless appears to be a failed cause. Why it can be said that the Chinese
society are trying to control the bodies of Chinese women is because they are widely propagating the
use of the slang phrase sheng nu to label women who are unmarried and past the supposedly ideal
marriageable age of 27 or 30 as left over ladies too old to be desirable. The article talks about sheng
nu as forming an alternating topic of humor and alarm for Chinese media content and even
government studies. What all these mean is that the Chinese society, through its powerful institutions
of the government and the media, are pressuring the women to marry and to marry as early as
possible. That this pressure really exists is pointed out by magazine contributor and sociologist Leta

Based off the findings, many individuals do not know they are dysphagic, meaning they are not only
taking proper steps to ensure better and safer swallowing patterns, but the many individuals that have
worked with these patients have not discussed or made proper swallowing a strong focus. With this
idea, I think it is important to assess the types of environment these patients are living in and the type
of care they receive (medically and personally, from family and friends). It may lead to a better
understanding of why some patients are more aware than others. After my own learning about
dysphagia, proper care for dysphagia is not an independent task, but relies on a multitude of
individuals including those closest to the patient. Researching those that have a strong support system
may lead to a better outcome of those with more awareness of dysphagia, hopefully leading to
improved swallowing and a longer

  • 2. Sources of Air Pollution in Sidney Motor vehicle emissions remain the highest source of air pollution in Australian major cities with Sydney holding the record for the worst air quality in Australia. Although Sydney has comparatively better levels of air quality compared to other major cities in the world, air pollution is still a major environmental and health issue. The NSW Department of Environment and Climate Change have put the cost of this issue to human health at more than $4.7 billion each year in the greater metropolitan area. Health experts have also estimated that air pollution cause up to 1400 deaths per year in Sydney alone, and up to 2000 hospital admissions for respiratory and cardiovascular illnesses. In a 2004 statement by the CSIRO, the mortality rate due to air pollution in Australia (approximately 2,400 deaths each year at the time) was higher than the road toll (approximately 1,700 deaths each year at the time), and these estimates have only risen in recent years as medical science gains a better understanding of the link between air pollution, health problems, and the significant cost to our economy. The cause of this pollution can be put down to Sydney s ever growing vehicle numbers. According to the NSW Government s 2009 State of The Environment Report, vehicle ownership growth now outstrips the population growth as each household is now estimated to own 1.49 cars and take 16.3 million car trips totalling 132 million kilometres daily. Hence a combination of both economic incentives and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. A Comparison of Exxon and Chevron Executive Summary Exxon and Chevron are no doubt some of the leading incorporated oil companies on the globe. Exxon Corp. is the second largest oil firm after Royal Dutch Shell, it is respected for getting the biggest revenue return in 2008 which no company in the U.S. have ever reported before. According to Wilson (2009) Chevron has managed to show a lot of profitability in the market despite the decease in its oil production. It graded as one of firms which made a billion dollars profit within a week in the period of July to September 2008. Regardless of profitability trends set by the two oil firms in the U.S. market, they have been facing financial decline like the rest of the companies in other industries. The two firms are like two sailing ships which are taking longer time to sink. In the last few years, the production capacity of Chevron and Exxon has decreased and their listings on the stock market have become weak. The continuation of construction and drilling which requires billions of dollars in expense of oil production might make them experience a bigger financial crisis (Wilson, 2009). Exxon and Chevron are so different in a number of ways. When you compare Chevron to Exxon, Chevron is a smaller firm. The ratios of Exxon are relatively larger than Chevron s. Nevertheless, Chevron has a got a wide net working capital and market ratio than its counterpart Exxon. This therefore, means that because its larger networking capital, Chevron needs a lot of money ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. I Define The Nature Of Judgmental Essay As an observer from the east, Chen Cheng had many preconceived values granted by his biography. Inevitably, these values are recognizable in his portraits of the Timurid world. In five major aspects did Chen Cheng appear to be judgmental. I define the nature of judgmental as shown by negative, or occasionally, positive, semantic fields characterized by the usages of adjectives and descriptive sentences. Every case of being judgmental hints at Chen Cheng s unique background that tells the readers both about the Confucian tradition of China and about the daily scene of the Timurid society. Chen Cheng was harsh in criticizing the necessary protocols performed by the ordinary inhabitants. He wrote: Every occasion when people meet, [they] do not display any protocol, only bowing slightly and almost invisibly to each other.... If two haven t met for a while, or when people get to know each other for the first time, they perform so called advanced protocol, kneeling down one of the legs.... When there is feast or gathering, ruler and his subjects, males and females, the elderly and the young all sit in a circular podium without a sense of shame. Chen Cheng obviously evaluated the Timurid social scene as barbarian and rustic. Even though people greet each other by some sort of protocol, Chen Cheng naturally disdained it as if there was nothing carried out. Under the Chinese imperial examination system, the textbook materials were the Four Books and Five Classics ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Cuban Immigrants And The Cuban Adjustment Act Essay INTRODUCTION: Even though Cuba is a little under 100 miles away from the United States, the relationship between the two countries has created an atmosphere full of tension and perpetual mistrust. When Fidel Castro decided to align Cuba with the U.S.S.R. and become a communist country, the United States of America was stunned and highly insulted. Because of their relationship, both countries have played a back and forth game of trying to outdo the other. This game and state of affairs in Cuba has created a large influx of Cuban immigrants looking for better opportunities and trying to escape poverty and persecution. This paper will be focusing on Cuban immigrants and examining different Cuban immigration laws, which allowed them to easily become United States citizens, including; the Cuban Adjustment Act, The Immigration and Nationality Act Amendments of 1976 and the Wet Foot, Dry Foot Policy. It will also discuss whether the Cuban immigration laws are unfair to other foreign immigrants and whether the laws are relevant today. Finally, we will be considering the future and try to predict how the laws will change with the changing diplomatic relations between Cuba and the United States and the imminent removal of the Embargo Act. CUBAN IMMIGRATION LAWS: The Cuban Adjustment Act was enacted in 1966. The Act allowed illegal Cuban immigrants, who were already living in the United States for two years prior, to easily gain their citizenship. It also fast tracked Cuban ... • 7. The Media s Ability to Control Our View of the World Essay With the coming of television and the internet, are we or are we not a more informed community? (Orwell, 1984) Essentially, this statement requires a profound study in order to determine the impact of news media ability to control the agenda and ultimately impact our view of the world. First, let us differentiate these two sources of communication because there is a major difference between television and internet as a mass media communicating tool. Television focuses more on broad commercial needs of people and is highly dependent on paid advertisement compared to the internet, which is closer to very specific needs. In other words, television advertisement and programming are tailor made to get a larger audience in order ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Therefore the context in which advertisement operates relates to news mass media s ability to influence people. The influence of advertisement is proportional to the frequency of repetition of the same message. People in the advertisement business, often call advertisement by using the word media. Advertisement or media is achieved by printing newspapers and magazines; or spoken announcement in television and radiobroadcasts; or display posters on the internet. (Previte, 1999) There are various rating methods used to estimate the number of people who listen to any particular advertisement. This is very important in order to establish the cost of the product advertised. The Sponsor paying for the advertisement is usually required to contract for a series of programs. These programs have to be acceptable to the media used to display the advertisement. The advertisers are remunerated accordingly in proportion to the rating the program. Specialized firms do the rating independently, in order to avoid conflict of interest. The rating determines the cost of the message and is proportional to the number of people reached. (Morehead, 1966) The hypothesis formulated in this paper is that news media s ability to control the agenda and impact our world views is not as important as it seems. The ... Disadvantages Of Online Recruiting The Advantage and Disadvantage of Online Recruiting After completing the chapters reading at Bethel University, this student have learned that more and more companies are utilizing online recruiting as there main source of hiring process for their organizations. Online job sites have transformed the recruitment landscape for both employers and job seekers and largely increased the efficiency with which hiring decisions can take place. In addition to the now conventional social networking recruitment tools, recruiters may find the use of more targeted association sites to help narrow the candidate pool and make sure efforts are not being wasted on uninterested parties. • 21. Capacit Capacity The process analytics simulation that we started in class was an interesting and practical demonstration and actual application of process flow analysis. The first problem which we performed in small groups within the class, was laid out very simply as a set of sequential processes, each with individual characteristics, that are ordered in pre determined process that when complete, produces one production unit. The initial concepts demonstrated were those of cycle time, throughput, capacity, utilization and bottleneck. Cycle time reflects the average time it takes for units to complete the process once the process gets running. (Leonard, 2007, p. 10). Generally the cycle time will be determined by the longest process in a sequential flow. Throughput is the amount of time it takes to complete the first unit. ... The utilization rate was the hardest for the group to grasp until they effectively understood that the bottleneck, the process that limits the overall capacity of the system being measured (Leonard, 2007, p. 18), is always the process that is running at 100% utilization, and all other processes utilization is calculated on the basis of this bottleneck process. The remainder of problem 1 in the simulation was emphasizing the importance identifying the bottleneck and calculating the effects of changing the process when you change the bottleneck and when you change other factors. If you affect the bottleneck than you effect process. If the bottleneck remains unchanged than the overall efficiency of the process does not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

His role in Italian unification is widely debated, as are is aims and underlying motives. Many hold contrasting views as to whether he was an Italian nationalist or merely a Piedmontese expansionist, and the subject is still a controversial one to this day. The existence of many wide ranging sources which often challenge each other on the subject does not make the task of determining what drove Cavour any easier for scholars. It is often agreed, however, that Cavour was a very important catalyst in the unification of Italy, wittingly or not. It is of interest to note that Napoleon III had been a member of the secret Carbonari society in the Papal States and elsewhere during 1930 1931, which sought to win liberal, constitutional and national reform. This coupled with the fact that foreign action in support of Italy would also win him support at home and that his attempted assassination involved him more deeply in Italian politics, means that Napoleon s support for Cavour was almost guaranteed. It is probable that Cavour knew this, and thus took full advantage of the fact. By now it seemed Cavour had earned himself some adversaries as well, however, such as prominent political figures Giuseppe Mazzini and Pallavicino. An illustration of this rivalry lies in this extract of a letter Mazzini sent to Cavour in 1856: Between you and us, sir, an abyss yawns. We represent Italy, you the old, covetous, faint hearted ambitions of the house of Savoy. We desire above all National Unity. You, territorial aggrandisement for Piedmont... This shows that Cavour was already under suspicion from hard line republicans and Italian nationalists to be supporting Piedmont more than Italy as a whole. His next actions did not help to improve his image with them, however, as can be seen by the Plombieres pact of 1858. This was a secret meeting between Napoleon and Cavour in which a deal was struck: In exchange for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I started having dreams about it strange circular dreams in a strange city where gods took a hand and the dream person never found the wise man he was looking for. In order to exorcise the dreams, I wrote the story. Here, the rhetor s original purpose of writing this story was to get rid of her strange dreams. However, this adds on to the idea that people are uncomfortable with disorder because her strange dreams deviate from the norm and she wants it to disappear. This is similar to the story because the gods that live in Theare hate disorder. Also, because the rhetor wrote this in the time that she did, many events that occurred during the 1980s in Britain might have influenced the way she wrote this story and why she wrote it. As mentioned previously, Britain experienced political unrest during this time. There were many riots sparked by racial tensions, local problems, and poor relations between predominantly black communities and the police. There was also conflict in prisons as prisoners started a hunger strike to protest the right to be treated as political prisoners, resulting in 61 deaths. Not only that, economic recession in Britain during this time resulted in high unemployment rates of up to three million unemployed citizens. Because Diana Wynne Jones wrote The Sage of Theare during this time, the story reflects some aspects of these events. For example, the world of Theare is crafted to be a utopian society, a world of order where there is no chaos. The rhetor might have chosen to depict Theare in this way as a distraction from what is actually going on in the real world. In this fantasy world, everything ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 28. The Effect Of Pef On Biological Cells In general, the primary effect of PEF on biological cells is the changes in the structure and the breakdown of cell membranes, which is mainly responsible for mass transfer, and several other metabolic activities in the cell (Ade Omowaye, Angersbach, Taiwo, Knorr, 2001). The cell membrane is considered as a capacitor filled with dielectric material of low electrical conductance, and accumulation of charges with opposite polarity in both sides of membrane form a membrane potential. However, when the overall potential exceeds 1V, the elctro compressive force cause dielectric rupture of membrane leads to formation of pores/micro holes in the membrane (Schoenbach, Peterkin, Alden, Beebe, 1997). Changes in the cell membrane can lead to form reversible or irreversible pores in the cell membrane and ultimate loss of cell viability. On the other hand, voltage sensitive protein channels would be opened when PEF applied and subject to much larger currents which generally have during cell metabolic activities. Consequently, protein channels could be irreversibly denatured (Castro, Barbosa Canovas, Swanson, 1993). Barsotti and Cheftel. (1999) have stated that pore inversion generally occurs under an applied electric field with the expansion of hydrophobic pore. As Weaver and Chizmadzhev. (1996) stated, at low strength electric fields ( 200 V cm−1), and short pulse duration (10−5 10−6 s), the electrical breakdown could be reversed, and repair the damages after the termination of ... • 38. The Birthmark Symbolism The Mortal of the Story By looking at symbolism in The Birthmark, the reader can interpret that the birthmark is a symbol for imperfection and mortality which is not obvious to most people. This is important because it turns the birthmark into something all readers can relate to since no one is perfect. Georgiana s birthmark was the fatal flaw of humanity which Nature, in one shape or another, stamps ineffaceably on all her productions (Hawthorne 12). As stated before, nothing is perfect, Nature has a flaw on everything and Georgiana s was her birthmark. Her husband, Aylmer, notices the birthmark and also sees it as an imperfection even though other men would often tell her it was a charm. No, dearest Georgiana, you came so nearly perfect from the hand of Nature that this slightest possible defect, which we hesitate whether to term a defect or a beauty, shocks me, as being the visible mark of earthly imperfection (Hawthorne 11). Aylmer at first is the only one, other from jealous women, to point out her birthmark as an imperfection but his constant talk began to make her believe she was in fact flawed. This is important because it ultimately leads to the death of Georgiana. Once Georgiana also begins to view her birthmark as an imperfection, just like Aylmer does, she begins to hate it and demands it be removed. Remove it, remove it, whatever be the cost, or we shall both go mad! (Hawthorne 21). Georgiana is sacrificing everything she can in order for this birthmark to be removed, even death. Aylmer warns her of the dangers of performing such a surgery but she refuses to think it over and believes she is most fit to die (Hawthorne 21). Their work was so successful for multiple reasons. Code Talkers were Navajo men who used their native language to develop a code that was indecipherable to Japanese cryptologists. • 41. Theme Of Relationships In Of Mice And Men Of Mice and Men is a film which was produced in 1992 but set in 1937 during the Great Depression in the United States. Spies (by Michael Frayn) was published in 2002 and mainly set during World War II. George Milton and Lennie Small from Of Mice and Men are migrant workers who travel around California looking for work. These characters are unusual because the majority of migrant workers at this time were loners whereas these characters are best friends. They are also so different from each other which also makes them unusual. Stephen Wheatley and Keith Hayward from Spies also maintained a friendship, different to George and Lennie s. Stephen feels as if Keith had total superiority but turned a blind eye to it. Stephen and Keith were adolescent boys who spied on Keith s mother. Both texts explore the theme of relationship and power, but in different ways. Of Mice and Men explores the theme of relationship through different characters, but mainly through George and Lennie. Their friendship was unique as during the Great Depression, it was rare to see ranch workers stick together and form friendships the way George and Lennie had. Lennie was portrayed as a grown man with a childish mind, which was why he was so dependent on George. This was a positive relationship in this text even though George demanded Lennie around, it was for his own good. The different camera techniques in this text help capture the essence of their relationship which include over the shoulder shots and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This makes it easier to disregard Victor s and the other s actions toward him because their actions do not overlook social laws and seem necessary. In turn, the monster becomes less likeable and harder to sympathize with as the narrative continues. However, as the monster brings up in one of his final speeches, society goes against fundamental Christian rules of acceptance and welcoming others by not receiving him. The monster s predicament highlights how justice is never truly a fair concept because it cannot be equitable for everyone involved; there is inevitably a winner and a loser. Shelley masterfully plays upon this notion, recognizing this holds true for the most basic and extreme situations, illustrating that good and evil are intertwined, making justice incredibly difficult to achieve and oftentimes much closer connected than first thought. The monster s quest for justice brings depth and conflict to the story by underlining that while justice is not always fair, it can be deserved by all. Yet by the Gothic undertones that are present in the story, the tragedy lies in the fact that the monster, though helpless and lonely his entire life, can never have justice as he is doomed to repel it from the moment his life ... The Startling Plight Of China s Leftover Ladies Summary Jinzhao Li WR098 Steinberg Sept. 20. 2014 Christina Larsen s article The Startling Plight of China s Leftover Ladies (2012) can be said to be a presentation of the pervasive efforts of society to control the bodies of women. It should be noted that in many societies women can even be forced to be married even against their will under pain severe punishment such as death. In this case, in the Chinese situation as reported by Larsen, the means of control is more of persuasion with the use of derogatory language that nevertheless appears to be a failed cause. Why it can be said that the Chinese society are trying to control the bodies of Chinese women is because they are widely propagating the use of the slang phrase sheng nu to label women who are unmarried and past the supposedly ideal marriageable age of 27 or 30 as left over ladies too old to be desirable. The article talks about sheng nu as forming an alternating topic of humor and alarm for Chinese media content and even government studies.
