Theory- Audience
Chelsea Kierans
Audience Profile
• Primary Audience
The primary audience of this film is 5-14 year
olds. There is not a gender that it is directed
towards, as there is a male and a female lead, and
this includes everyone. It shows children that
judging another person on what they look like
what background they come from is wrong as
they could be amazing people, or good at a job
they wouldn’t think they could do because of the
background they come from.
• Secondary Audience
The secondary audience of this film is the
parents/carers of the children that would be
watching it. The ages of these people would be
20-50. They would find it interesting as it covers
things such as stereotyping and discrimination.
Parents will be interested and also captivated by
the storyline, as well as the children. It covers
serious problems in the world today whilst also
making jokes and making it a funny film to watch.
Audience Profile
• Primary Audience
Children aged 4-15 would enjoy this film. There
is not a specific gender the film is made for, as
there is females and males as the females as the
main characters. Children will find the film
funny as there is childish humour incorporated
into the film, such as the minions voices. It is
emotional as you can see the feelings that Gru
and the girls are feeling when he has to give
them back to the adoption agency.
• Secondary Audience
The secondary audience of this film would be the
parents/carers of the children watching it, so
from 20-50 year olds. These people will enjoy this
film as it covers things such as isolation and
adoption. The adults will see a deeper meaning
to the film, whereas children will just see the
basic plot and laugh. There is also jokes put in the
film that only adults would get, as they are not
jokes made for children to understand.
Audience Profile
• Primary Audience
The primary audience of this film would be children from
6-15 year olds. This film does not have a specific gender
that it is trying to sell the film to, as it represents both
genders throughout the film. The film teaches people that
it’s okay to do what you think is right, and do something
that is out of your comfort zone. The film makes everyone
laugh with the humour it uses, this is where it makes jokes
of different characters from different TV shows and films.
These are characters such as Batman and Green lantern.
• Secondary Audience
The secondary audience of this film is the parents or
carers of the children watching it. They will enjoy it as it is
a film that makes jokes out of many things, adults will
understand as they have been around longer, and will
have seen the films/TV shows that are being made fun of.
There is a twist in the film at the end where the Lego
world is in the real one, and it might have made some
parents realise they need to spend less time working and
more time with their children.
Hypodermic Needle
• Definition
– Where the audience of something believes and
accepts what it is told by the media, immediately.
• Example
– For example, if a well trusted News Broadcaster,
such as the BBC were to tell it’s viewers that child
obesity levels are going up, then we will believe
them. This is because everything they tell the
world is factual and truthful, even if they leave out
some bits that could be quite important.
Uses and Gratifications Information
• I use the BBC website to find out information
about what is going on in this country and
others countries, such as what is going on
between America and North Korea. This is
because it is factual and the BBC is a
broadcaster that people trust. I use it because
there are many other unreliable news outlets
out there, that I could go to but I know
they’ve lied about things or been bias in the
past, and the BBC has no history of this.
Uses and Gratifications Personal
Identity
• I read magazines, as there is certain people I
like to look up to, as the clothing they wear
and what makeup they use is something I
aspire to use. These people are models such
as Gigi Hadid or Kendall Jenner as their style is
different, but still really fashionable and bold.
Uses and Gratifications Integration
and Social Interaction
• I use social media to talk to people, and that
creates a sense of belonging among your
friends, it could bring you closer together, and
be able to talk to your friends more often that
you would if you didn’t have social media. You
could also make new friends through social
media as you could have the same interests,
and find each other on a page of something
you have a mutual interest in.
Uses and Gratifications Entertainment
• I use Netflix and social media to relax, as it
makes me feel like I have nothing to worry
about. It gives me a distraction and something
else to think about, other than college or
family problems. In your personal time, this is
a good thing to do instead of overthinking and
feeling bored.
Consumer Generated Content
• Example
People can make their own ‘fan’ posters, where they make the
poster look like what they want it to look like, a good example of tis
would be on redbubble.com. The website is mostly ‘fandom’ based,
therefore people make their own t-shirts and things of the different
interests in TV shows and films they like.
• What are the advantages to media producers?
It is still promoting the film or TV show, but for free. This is the
advantage of things like this, if loads of people like your TV show or
film, then you will get free promotion.
• Why would the audience generate content?
The audience are fans of the product being sold, they may even be
avid watchers or fans, these people will make things for fun to
promote it and to show off their own skills as well as their interests.
