The document summarizes research conducted on a film plot about a 17-year-old adopted boy dealing with mental health issues. Primary research methods included focus groups and questionnaires to understand the target audience and their preferences. Secondary research looked at existing films, books, and real stories about adoption experiences. Key findings were that the film's message should be about the difficulties of adoption, and it should be targeted towards teenage audiences. The research informed decisions around characters, locations, and genre.
2. The Plot
“There is a 17 year old boy that has been adopted and
suffers from a series of problems preventing him from
being seen as a regular kid by other kids at school. The
story of the film is set in a Psychiatrists clinic (Mental
health doctors). While telling his story to the
psychiatrist (doctor), he goes through a series of
flashbacks from his past, be it good or bad. The
flashbacks involve the time he had his first girlfriend,
what his social life with his friends was like before his
illness kicked in and his family life. By the end of the
film will the psychiatrist be of any help to him? Or will
his life continue to spiral downwards to the point of no
return? Who knows...?”
3. Message
Secondary: current affairs and social issues in
the press:
• Guardian website
• BBC
• Sky
Affairs un-associated with the press i.e.
something that is not worthy of being in the
press but is popular among the target
audience

5. Why I Chose This Type Of
Research
• Themes and ideas are relevant to the
target audience.
• Build an understandable knowledge
of experiences faced – Depression,
Unknowingly feeling (Parents) etc.
6. Results And Links Used
Through various amounts of research I have
come to the conclusion that the message of the
film will be:
“Difficulties that are experienced with adoption.”
The results came from:

10. Why I Chose This Type Of
Research
• So that I don’t duplicate what has
already been done.
• To get a broader knowledge of what
might be possible to create.

The plot is going to be based on a real life
story.
We have chosen the book, coincidentally named
‘Chosen’, produced by the BAAF (British
Association for Adoption Foundation) to
conduct this research.
“Chosen should be read by anyone whose
life is touched by adoption”

“Very interesting book of personal accounts
giving different experiences and perspectives
on adoption. Essential reading for anyone
interested in the subject.” – Claire (Amazon)
13. Location
• Primary: Going out and looking at places
to set the film ourselves:
• Taking photographs of locations that are
likely to be chosen and save them all in a
file so we have a mini database of
locations.
15. Why I Chose This Type Of
Research
• To see physically what I am working
with.
• Research could be done through the
internet to find the location, this will
allow us to quickly find locations
inconveniently situated.

From looking at up to date mental homes and
psychiatric institutes, it almost resembles an
ordinary house. So there would only need to
be shots of the outside of any house.

19. Why I chose this type of
research
Watching other teen films and possibly using
what is typical of the genre. I.e. based in a
school; Jock, Cheer leaders, Nerds, Regular
kids Depending on the plot we can then
decide on the characters.
20. Results and links used
• We will base the character on a typical
teenager that has been adopted I.e. long hair,
doesn’t take time on himself with his
appearance. (Just an example)

sen
• Again we will use the book Chosen to come up
with the character representation.
22. Why we chose this type of
research
If we choose our favourite genre then
it could be targeted at and audience
that is like us. i.e. if we chose Horror
then it could possible attract a
limited audience that like the genre
horror.

Interpretation of the film ‘America’ which is a
drama/ TV Movie.

The main character faces all of the problems I’d
like the character in my film to face and the
message is quite powerful, especially in the
monologue at the end of the film.
24. Target Audience
Primary: Through extensive research we began
to see a connection between this film and any
teenage group.

25. Why I chose this type of
research
To make the film as relevant to the target
audience as possible, we need to get their
views on it and incorporate the things they
like so that they would not only watch, but
enjoy the film.
26. Results and links used
• Questionnaire and Focus Group Results. Focus

• The respondents were all for our idea of the
film and only had minor suggestions to add
like the title etc.
27. What they enjoy watching

28. Why I chose this type of
research
Incorporating things the target audience enjoy
will make the film appeal to the target
audience.
29. Thoughts on the planned film
• Primary: Focus Groups, Questionnaires

30. Why I chose this type of
research
We asked the respondents this because of
problems that are so personal. Our film is
quite full on and so we don’t bring the mood
down, we needed some comments on it.

Questionnaire and Focus Group Results

The basic concept of the film was liked by many,
but as the treatment was very limited, in that
it didn’t describe what exactly was in his
flashbacks, they got frustrated. The majority
of the respondents said they liked it.
32. How they will watch it
Primary: Focus Groups, Questionnaires
Focus Group Results.doc
They will watch it wherever we put it. i.e. DVD,
Internet.
From the research conducted , we found out that the
majority of respondents have access to the Internet
to watch films. Alternatively, some watch films either
on DVD or T.V.
