Slides from the workshop on Benchmarking RDF Systems co-located with the Extended Semantic Web Conference 2013. The presentation is about an on-going work on building the benchmark for electronic publishing applications. The benchmark provides real-world data sets, the Dutch parliamentary proceedings and a set of analytical SPARQL queries that were built on top of these data sets. The queries were grouped into micro-benchmarks according to their analytical aims. This allows one to perform better analysis of RDF stores behaviors with respect to a certain SPARQL feature used in a micro-benchmark/query.
Preliminary results of running the benchmark on the Virtuoso native RDF store are presented, as well as references to the on-line material including the data sets, queries and the scripts that were used to obtain the results.

Towards a Crowd-sourced Open Education Strategy for Employment in Europe with Qualification-focused MOOCs

Europe has the opportunity to utilize Open Education to train specialized workforce and boost employment by increasing MOOC quantity, speeding-up MOOC delivery and improving MOOC quality. Authors propose a crowd-sourced open mechanism called MOOCAgora for the innovative design and agile development of qMOOCs. MOOCAgora is the heart of an 8-stage business circle that impacts the job market. An identified local, national or European skills shortage is addressed in MOOCAgora through massive certified delivery of skills and competences in qMOOCs. qMOOCs are a newly proposed quality-centered format of MOOCs that focuses on skills and qualifications construction. qMOOCs can use a modified version of the MOOC canvas framework for qualifications and competences that can be achieved through three educational components/paradigms: deep learning experiences, problem-focused education and 3d virtual immersive environments.

Darco Jansen gave a presentation on 20 May 2016 about HE institutions strategies on Open Eduaction at International Conference on Smart Learning Ecosystems and Regional Development. Based on several surveys he demonstrated that Europe is strongly involved in MOOCs and Open education compared to the US. Darco elaborated on the role of regional support centers for Open education in stimulating smart learning ecosystems and smart cities. On February 18, 2022, I delivered a rather interesting and important talk online to a group of 60ish educators, researchers, and practitioners on teaching with Moodle in MoodleMoot Japan 2022. If the following keywords interest you, you should not miss this video: ontology, epistemology, psychology, educational paradigms, learning theories, and pedagogy. This video also for the first time introduces an original untested learning theory called by me "creation-based learning (CBL)". I embrace the learning paradigms of #constructivism and #connectivism. I also am a strong fan of constructionism. I hope CBL will be one step further to promote active learning online. In this video, I also raised the idea of "sustainable learning behaviors" and raised the attention of the public towards sustainable learning behaviors of creating, maintaining, recycling, renewing, and sharing knowledge using networked digital technologies.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
