Ethene, also known as ethylene, is an important raw material used to produce many household plastics and chemicals. It can be extracted from both natural gas and crude oil through fractional distillation, or produced through the thermal cracking of ethane or propane at high temperatures. This thermal cracking process involves heating the hydrocarbons between 750-900°C in the presence of steam to produce ethene and other unsaturated hydrocarbons. Ethene can also be produced through the dehydration of ethanol using a catalyst such as sulfuric acid.
