The hypothalamus develops from the diencephalon and regulates homeostasis through the hypothalamic-pituitary unit. It is located below the thalamus and controls the pituitary gland via releasing and inhibiting hormones. The hypothalamus receives inputs from the internal and external environment and coordinates responses through motor outputs. Diseases that can affect the hypothalamus include pituitary adenomas, craniopharyngiomas, suprasellar dysgerminomas, inflammatory disorders like sarcoidosis, vascular issues, and trauma.
