Vasovagal syncope is fainting caused by a drop in heart rate and blood pressure. It can be triggered by emotional stress, pain, hunger, heat, or prolonged standing. During an episode, blood pools in the extremities instead of returning to the heart, reducing blood flow to the brain and causing loss of consciousness. Prevention focuses on avoiding triggers. When symptoms first appear, the person should lie down and raise their legs to improve blood flow. If they faint, placing them in the recovery position provides proper airway support and circulation until they regain consciousness.
