Short Horror Film
Question One
• From my results I can
conclude that the
target audience for my
film is between 16-20.
This means I will have
to rate my film as
either a 15 or an 18. I
will also need to tailor
its content to suit the
needs of this age group
to make sure my film is
enjoyable for them to
watch.
Question Two
• From my results I can
conclude that knives,
disfigured faces, shadows
and stalkers are the most
popular elements that
people enjoy. This will
mean that my film will
feature these four as this
will entertain my target
audience.
Question Three
• From my results I can
conclude that Sinister was
the favorite horror film
chosen by my target
audience. When asked why
one response said because
it was scariest and jumpy.
This is something that I
hope to recreate in my own
work. I will be watching
sinister to come up with
inspiration for my short
horror film.
Question Four
• From my results I can
conclude that ‘The Woman in
Black’ is my target audience’s
least favorite film. One of the
reasons from this was because
they thought it was boring. I
plan to run the plot of my film
by some of my friends who are
in my target audience range
and see if they think that it
would be entertaining to
watch. This will avoid having
a boring plot.
Question Five
• From my results I can
conclude that the top three
locations were the woods, a
school and a house. I plan to
film my movie in these three
location and have already
started looking at locations.
This will give my film more
diversity and ensure that the
action isn’t all in one place.
Question Six
• From my results I can conclude
that the sound of a music box is
the best fitting piece of audio for
my film. However, I also plan to
include another piece of music
that is sinister and suspenseful. I
plan to have this in the opening
credits of my film to immediately
set the atmosphere of the film.
Additionally, I think that a piece
of music box audio will work well
if it sounds eerie and is slowed
down. I plan to work with a few
of my friends in the music
department at my school to come
up with the score for my film.
Question Seven
• From my results I can
conclude that the colours
black, red and white are the
most popular colours for my
film’s poster. This will be the
colour scheme that I will use
when I create my poster.
Personally, I think that these
colours are very conventional
for my genre so I am also
planning to use brown to
break these stereotypes.
Question Eight
• When asked if my
audience would like to see
my film in black and
white or in colour they
answered with the option
of colour. This was
because the gore in horror
films is more gruesome
and the audience will get
to see it in more detail. I
too agree with this and
am happy with the
outcome of this question.
Question Nine
• From my survey I can
conclude that 4 - 6
jump-scares is the
right amount to have
for my film. As my film
is only a short movie I
wouldn’t want to
overload the footage
with them as it may
ruin the tension and
make the entire film
seem predictable.
Question Ten
• When asked which font they liked
the best my target audience chose
Lakeshore Drive. This is the
typography I will use for either
my poster or my opening credits
of my film. In the space between
my survey being created and
filled out I have discovered
another font that I think will also
work well in my film or poster. I
plan to hold a focus group and
ask which font they prefer.
However, I may end up using
both fonts.
Summary
• Overall I am happy that I created my survey. It has given
me a more in-depth insight into what my target audience
wants to see in my film. I has also helped me to know
what I should be including and what I shouldn't be
including.

Survey Monkey Results

  • 2. Question One • From my results I can conclude that the target audience for my film is between 16-20. This means I will have to rate my film as either a 15 or an 18. I will also need to tailor its content to suit the needs of this age group to make sure my film is enjoyable for them to watch.
  • 3. Question Two • From my results I can conclude that knives, disfigured faces, shadows and stalkers are the most popular elements that people enjoy. This will mean that my film will feature these four as this will entertain my target audience.
  • 4. Question Three • From my results I can conclude that Sinister was the favorite horror film chosen by my target audience. When asked why one response said because it was scariest and jumpy. This is something that I hope to recreate in my own work. I will be watching sinister to come up with inspiration for my short horror film.
  • 5. Question Four • From my results I can conclude that ‘The Woman in Black’ is my target audience’s least favorite film. One of the reasons from this was because they thought it was boring. I plan to run the plot of my film by some of my friends who are in my target audience range and see if they think that it would be entertaining to watch. This will avoid having a boring plot.
  • 6. Question Five • From my results I can conclude that the top three locations were the woods, a school and a house. I plan to film my movie in these three location and have already started looking at locations. This will give my film more diversity and ensure that the action isn’t all in one place.
  • 7. Question Six • From my results I can conclude that the sound of a music box is the best fitting piece of audio for my film. However, I also plan to include another piece of music that is sinister and suspenseful. I plan to have this in the opening credits of my film to immediately set the atmosphere of the film. Additionally, I think that a piece of music box audio will work well if it sounds eerie and is slowed down. I plan to work with a few of my friends in the music department at my school to come up with the score for my film.
  • 8. Question Seven • From my results I can conclude that the colours black, red and white are the most popular colours for my film’s poster. This will be the colour scheme that I will use when I create my poster. Personally, I think that these colours are very conventional for my genre so I am also planning to use brown to break these stereotypes.
  • 9. Question Eight • When asked if my audience would like to see my film in black and white or in colour they answered with the option of colour. This was because the gore in horror films is more gruesome and the audience will get to see it in more detail. I too agree with this and am happy with the outcome of this question.
  • 10. Question Nine • From my survey I can conclude that 4 - 6 jump-scares is the right amount to have for my film. As my film is only a short movie I wouldn’t want to overload the footage with them as it may ruin the tension and make the entire film seem predictable.
  • 11. Question Ten • When asked which font they liked the best my target audience chose Lakeshore Drive. This is the typography I will use for either my poster or my opening credits of my film. In the space between my survey being created and filled out I have discovered another font that I think will also work well in my film or poster. I plan to hold a focus group and ask which font they prefer. However, I may end up using both fonts.
  • 12. Summary • Overall I am happy that I created my survey. It has given me a more in-depth insight into what my target audience wants to see in my film. I has also helped me to know what I should be including and what I shouldn't be including.
