AUDIENCE RESEARCH -
QUESTIONNAIRE
QUESTION 1
What I learn from these survey results is that those who are answering the survey 50% male
or female. This means that the responses from the rest of the survey aren’t completely biased
to one specific gender.
QUESTION 2
The age demographic is
very important when
constructing any media
product. Different age
groups respond differently
to media in terms of likes
and dislikes.
What I learn from this is that
I have received survey
answers from my target
audience, where the
responses range from 17 to
21+.
QUESTION 3
What is your Favourite film genre?
Many of the respondents answered
‘comedy’ as their favourite genre
because it is fun to watch and that they
enjoy to laugh.
The other respondents answered ‘Horror’
because the storylines are interesting as
well as the thrill of being terrified.
What I can gather from this is that my
audience want something interesting and
gripping to watch, but occasionally want
to laugh as it has a lot of re-watch value.
I need to gear my trailer as much as
possible to tend to these needs but still
conforming to my genre conventions.
QUESTION 4
There is a lot of focus on how the plot progresses, meaning that the storyline has to be very
interesting in order to garner any attention. A plot that twists and turns at any point throwing
any viewer out of their comfort zone has to be expressed through the trailer.
There is also a lot of attention on who is driving the plot. The audience is really keen to see
who is causing the story to enter a climactic stage and want to find out their intentions. This
can be easily portrayed through music that builds tension as well as base character action’s
off mental health issues.
The essence of murder seems to be imperative in this type of genre as blood and mystery are
typical conventions. Finding a way to implement these conventions in a trailer may prove to be
tough as it is important not to give the whole plot away.
QUESTION 5
The importance of this
question is to help to decide
the location/setting of the
trailer.
This can help give me
inspiration for sequences such
as running through a gloomy
forest or a rundown hospital.
Although my trailer focuses on
a school setting, typical
conventions can be taken
from different stories that
conform to the genre e.g. Saw
is set in an abandoned
warehouse.
QUESTION 6
Most responses to this question
answered female but for surprisingly
different reasons.
Some said that it would subvert from the
protagonist being male.
Others said that females focus more on
thought and emotions. Those type of
characteristics would be more interesting
in a psycho as it give the character
different dimensions.
QUESTION 7
The colours for any piece
of media have to accurately
represent a certain theme
or thought in order to be
received by any audience.
This means that
constructing a house style
is key to presenting any
type of media.
The colours are mostly
identified with a genre and
in this case, ‘red’ is mostly
associated with
psychological thrillers.
QUESTION 8
Knowing the right way to get the audience to
feel any type of emotion can be expressed
through music. This meaning that music can
play a vital role in getting an audience to feel
emotion towards a piece of text.
Respondents said that eerie tones and slow
piano notes can emphasize a suspenseful
notion.
Heartbeats were also mentioned, which is an
interesting concept that I may tinker with.
QUESTION 9
This question is specifically aimed at how I will be marketing my film poster
through the preliminary task of a film poster and a magazine front cover.
Knowing how to construct an effective campaign is crucial when trying to sell a
media product.
Using my target demographic, I can get a really good idea of where they
consume their media and find out what platforms they use to learn about
upcoming blockbusters.
Most respondents answered with online advertisements on Snapchat and
Instagram.
QUESTION 10
The general consensus for this answer was that the storyline or plot has to be something that
hooks them in. With this I have to be really careful by not giving too much of the plot away but
still have to add aspects that are interesting enough for my audience to want to know more.
This can be done by leaving subtle hints through scenery or leaving the trailer with a
cliffhanger and alluding to a red herring.
Other answers said that the trailer needs to make them feel afraid of what is to come. This
meaning that conventions of psychological thrillers need to be followed, but I would need to
use music, mise-en-scene and camera angles to create those emotions of anxiety.
