Reading from a text:
When you read from a textbook or an
information booklet, you read for three reasons:
• Build a field of knowledge
• Interact with a text
• Respond to a text

This is used to:
Recall and relay existing knowledge.
Use background knowledge to predict new
meanings and events.
Examine other aspects of a topic that will assist
in understanding.

Identify the purpose within the text, by reading
with intent.

This is used to:
Retell the meaning of the text from your own
perspective.
Consider different perspectives.

Before you can make notes about your textbook,
you need to READ your text book.
This involves 2 steps:
• Reading for background understanding.
• Interacting with the text, which requires three
actions from you.
Interacting with the text:
After you have read through the text, get THREE different
coloured highlighters/colouring pencils/markers.
• Use the first marker to identify the MAIN IDEA in each
paragraph.
• The second marker is used to identify ADDITIONAL,
important information (dates, names, ratio’s)
• The third marker is used to identify ONE part of the text
that changes how you understand the work.

Study methods (lesson 3)

  • 4. This is used to: Recall and relay existing knowledge. Use background knowledge to predict new meanings and events. Examine other aspects of a topic that will assist in understanding. NSWDSECD:StrategiesforReadingFactualTexts;Aug.1997

  • 6. This is used to: Identify the purpose within the text, by reading with intent. NSWDSECD:StrategiesforReadingFactualTexts;Aug.1997

  • 8. This is used to: Retell the meaning of the text from your own perspective. Consider different perspectives. NSWDSECD:StrategiesforReadingFactualTexts;Aug.1997
  • 9.
  • 10. Before you can make notes about your textbook, you need to READ your text book. This involves 2 steps: • Reading for background understanding. • Interacting with the text, which requires three actions from you.
  • 11. Interacting with the text: After you have read through the text, get THREE different coloured highlighters/colouring pencils/markers. • Use the first marker to identify the MAIN IDEA in each paragraph. • The second marker is used to identify ADDITIONAL, important information (dates, names, ratio’s) • The third marker is used to identify ONE part of the text that changes how you understand the work.
