This is part one of a multi-part lesson. I chunked it, because each individual skill is so important. The textbook barely does this section justice, so my principal gave me licence to extend it and do the work as detailed as I can afford, taking time constraints into consideration. Part 1 focuses on reading to extract knowledge from a text,

2. Reading from a text:
When you read from a textbook or an
information booklet, you read for three reasons:
• Build a field of knowledge
• Interact with a text
• Respond to a text

4. This is used to:
Recall and relay existing knowledge.
Use background knowledge to predict new
meanings and events.
Examine other aspects of a topic that will assist
in understanding.

6. This is used to:
Identify the purpose within the text, by reading
with intent.

8. This is used to:
Retell the meaning of the text from your own
perspective.
Consider different perspectives.

10. Before you can make notes about your textbook,
you need to READ your text book.
This involves 2 steps:
• Reading for background understanding.
• Interacting with the text, which requires three
actions from you.

11. Interacting with the text:
After you have read through the text, get THREE different
coloured highlighters/colouring pencils/markers.
• Use the first marker to identify the MAIN IDEA in each
paragraph.
• The second marker is used to identify ADDITIONAL,
important information (dates, names, ratio’s)
• The third marker is used to identify ONE part of the text
that changes how you understand the work.
