- Lichens are classified based on the type of fungal partner - either ascomycetes (ascolichens) or basidiomycetes (basidiolichens). Their thallus can take various forms like crustose (crust-like), foliose (leaf-like), or fruticose (shrub-like).
- Internally, lichen thalli are either homoimerous (algal cells and fungal hyphae uniformly distributed) or heteromerous (differentiated into layers with algal zone separated). Heteromerous thalli have upper/lower cortices and a medullary region.
- Special structures include breathing
