By Molly Reiss Strategies and Skills During Shared Reading for ESL Students
Complete a Sentence Students fill in the next word of the text.  Complete sentence after hearing repetitive phrase.
Print Awareness Discuss directionality Left to right Top to bottom Spacing Turning pages Checking back and front covers for clues
Identify Words Find words from the text that have been written on chart paper and circle them
Cross-Check Does it look right?  Does it sound right?  Does it make sense? Look at pictures Check predictions
Highlight Chunks of Language Write part of the story on chart paper—a repetitive phrase or pattern—reread it focusing on the language structure
Graphophonic Clues Write two words from the story and compare and contrast. Find words with similar letters or sounds
Analyze Content Discuss the story and record responses on chart paper. Story map What did students learn from the story? Find information in story for retelling Describe characters
Highlight Features in Nonfiction Text Table of contents Index Captions Section headings Photographs Ask how these features help reader understand the text?
Punctuation Find quotation marks Find speech dashes Question marks Periods Exclamation marks Capital letters
Shared reading is reading To, With, and By the children. First Reading—Teacher reads to students Second or Third reading—children read with the teacher Finally, during independent reading, the children take the shared reading book, or a copy, and read it to themselves
In conclusion: The teacher reads a Big Book with children in a whole group setting, modeling reading strategies, language functions, and language structures.  Children join in the reading when they are ready and participate in discussions. Shared reading is one of the most effective ways of helping ESL children, in all grades, learn reading strategies and language skills no matter what their language or reading levels are, because they can engage with the text in such an enjoyable way.
