Shared Reading is an effective way to teach ESL students reading strategies. This presentation describes ways to make shared reading a valuable tool in teaching reading to ESL students.

11. Shared reading is reading To, With, and By the children. First Reading—Teacher reads to students Second or Third reading—children read with the teacher Finally, during independent reading, the children take the shared reading book, or a copy, and read it to themselves

Children join in the reading when they are ready and participate in discussions. Shared reading is one of the most effective ways of helping ESL children, in all grades, learn reading strategies and language skills no matter what their language or reading levels are, because they can engage with the text in such an enjoyable way.
