This document summarizes the findings of a study analyzing the writing exercises in an English textbook for 8th grade students in Indonesia. The study examined whether the exercises included the micro and macro skills of writing as defined by Brown. It found that while the textbook provided many writing exercises, not all included the target micro and macro skills. Specifically, 65 out of 143 exercises did not include any micro skills, and 79 out of 143 did not include any macro skills. The study thus concluded the textbook was less effective for teaching writing competence due to the lack of exercises focusing on these essential skills. It provided suggestions such as including more writing practice and ensuring teachers address both micro and macro skills when using the textbook.
