Definition:
 Stem cell are the unspecialized biological cells that can divide and
differentiate into specialized cell type.
 Stem cell are found in Multicellular organisms.
Properties:
 They can self renewal/divide and produced more stem cell to maintain its
undifferentiated state.
 They can differentiate into other cells type.
 Stem cell are unspecialized but have the ability to specialized and the process
by which unspecialized cells is converted into specialized cells is called
differentiation.
Cell potency:
 Cell potency is the cell ability to differentiate into other cell type.
 A cell which can differentiate into more cell types greater it potency.
 Potency is also describe as the gene activation potential within the cell is
called cell potency.
Type of stem cell:
Toti-potent stem cells:
 These cells have the ability to produce complete fully functional / Viable
Organism.
 These cells can differentiate into embryo as well as Extra embryonic
tissue.E.g Aminon, Allantois, Yok sac and Chorion.
 Zygote is the example of totipotent stem cells.
Pluri-potent stem cells:
 Descent to totipotent stem cells they can differentiate into nearly all cells
type.
 Cells derived from any three germ layer.
1) Ectoderm.
2) Endoderm.
3) Mesoderm.
 The Embryonic stem cells are the best example of pluripotent stem cells.
Multi-potent stem cells:
 Multipotent stem cells are differentiate into specific range of cells type.
 The can differentiate into those cells type which are closely related family.
 An excellent example is Mesenchymal stem cells.
 Mesenchymal stem cells is derived from mesoderm layer and differentiate
into osteoblast (bone cell), myocytes ( muscle cells), adipocytes (fat cells)
and chondrocytes (cartilage cells).
Oligo-potent stem cells:
 These cells can differentiate into a very closely related cells type or few cells
type.
 The differentiation level of oligopotent is vey limited.
 Excellent example of this cells type is Hematopoietic stem cells.
 Hematopiotic Stem cells derived from mesoderm that can differentiated
into other blood cells like Myeloide and Lymphoid cells.
 Myeloid cell include basophil, esonophill, erythrocytes and macrophages.
 While lymphoid cell include B cells, T cells and natural killer cells.
Uni-potent stem cells:
 These cells differentiate into only one type of cells, its own cell.
 But these cells have the ability to self renewal which distinguish these cells
from non-stem cells.
 Example to this is Epidermis cell (produce only skin).
Trend:
Application:
 There are many application related to stem cells, some are as under;
 Latest research shows that blood can be form invitro from stem cells.
 Also stem cells can be use for organs reparing.
 Stem cells are use in plenty of treatments (Stem cell Therapy)
 Heart problem.
 Anti-cancer treatment.
 Alziemer’s treatment etc.
