Sparta was a militaristic city-state that valued strength, discipline and service above all else. Boys were trained from a young age for military life and personal expression was discouraged. Girls also received education focused on athletics and producing strong offspring. Sparta had a dual king system of government overseen by ephors and an assembly. Its social structure divided people into Spartans, outsiders and helot slaves.
