The University of Puget Sound was founded in 1888. A tradition began in 1908 when students unearthed a hatchet from a barn being torn down on campus. Each graduating class would carve their year on the hatchet, which was passed between classes in a friendly competition for possession. Over time, the hatchet exchanges grew dangerous and were banned in 1965. The hatchet has disappeared and reappeared on campus many times over the decades. It was last placed on permanent display in 1998 after being anonymously mailed back to the university from Florida. The university is now celebrating its 125th anniversary as an institution of higher education in the Pacific Northwest.

Eventually, negotiations led by F.W. de Klerk ended apartheid and South Africa held its first democratic elections, allowing blacks to vote and gain equal rights and opportunities.
