The Minoans, a powerful civilization based on the island of Crete, dominated the Aegean Sea from 2000 to 1400 BC and influenced Greek culture. Excavations revealed the Minoans had a nature-loving, athletic culture where women played a major religious role and animals and people were sacrificed to gods. Though earthquakes in 1700 BC and a major eruption in 1470 BC damaged the Minoans, they rebuilt until invaders from Greece conquered them after the disasters. Over 2,000 years ago, a fiery volcanic eruption buried the entire city of Pompeii in Italy under lava and ash.

There are 7 continents on Earth divided into countries and surrounded by oceans. The continents contain different landforms like plains, valleys, hills, plateaus, mountains, and rivers. Some key examples are the Andes mountain range in South America, the Himalayas in Asia containing Mount Everest, the Nile river in Africa being the longest river, and the Amazon river in South America being the widest.

- 7. Maps and globes have find lots of lines, which help us locate different places on the Earth’s surface.
- 8. The Equator is the line which goes horizontally around the Earth, and divides it into the Southern and Northern Hemisphere.
- 9. The lines of latitude go horizontally around the Earth to show how north or south a place is. The Equator is also a line of latitude.
- 10. Lines of latitude go vertically from the North to the South Pole, to show how east or west a place is.
- 11. They show important natural features, such as rivers, lakes, mountains, etc. The different colours that we can see help us know the elevations of the areas of land.
- 12. They show the borders between different countries, capital cities, etc.
- 14. They show a small area of a town or city. We use them to find out where a place is and how to get there. They mainly show man-made features and less natural features.
