Quarter 1 – Module 4
Poster of Common Elements with Names,
Symbols and Uses
Name:
1
The food that we eat contains many elements which
are mostly nutrients needed by the human to function
well. Examples of these elements are calcium,
magnesium, zinc and iron. These elements in food are
combined with other elements and the resulting
compounds are referred to as minerals.
Getting to know the elements essential to our
body is important. Do you want to know these elements?
Read on and perform the activities prepared for you in
this module.
At the end of the module, you should be able to:
Supplementary Learning Module for Junior High School Learners
LESSON
Poster of Common Elements with Names, Symbols and Uses
1. Make a poster of the common elements with
their names, symbols and uses; and
2. Recognize some elements essential to the
human body.
What’s in a word? (Part I)
Directions: List five words starting from letter A to E that
make use of the symbols of the different elements in the
periodic table. Be creative.
Word/s
Example: AcCePt
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
2
What’s in a word? (Part II)
Directions: Identify the names of the elements represented by the symbols that you have
used to form the word.
Word/s Element Names
Example: AcCePt Actinium, Cerium, Platinum
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Guide Questions:
1. Among the elements that you have identified from each symbol, which do you think is found
in your body?
2. What do you think are the uses of these elements?
Good job in finishing the activity! Now, take time to
process the information you acquired by accomplishing the
next task.
POSTER PROMOTION
Directions: Using your drawing and coloring materials make a poster of an element based on
Table 2. “Some elements essential to life.” The element poster may include the following
information: name of the element, element symbol, its food sources, functions in the human
body and deficiency condition it may cause.
Hi! How did you find the activity?
Please check your answers and see how well you did.
Don’t worry if you got a low score, this just means that
there are more things that you can learn from this
module. So, hop on!

There are mineral nutrients needed by the body. They are not manufactured by the
body although found in body tissues and fluids. They come from the food we eat. Some
nutrients, their sources, their role in the human body and deficiency condition they may
cause are shown in Table 2.

To strengthen what you have learned in this module, perform the following additional tasks.
Doing a detective work
1. Look and list five items or products at home that are made of elements.
2. What are the properties of each element and what are they made of that might affect their
uses?

The following terms used in this module are defined as
follows:
Elements – are chemically the simplest substance and hence cannot be broken down using
chemical reactions.
Minerals – the resulting compounds when elements in food are in combination with other
elements.
Periodic Table of Elements – the organized array of all the chemical elements in order of
increasing atomic number.
Symbol – (chemical symbol) a short notation derived from the name of a chemical element.

  • 2. 1 The food that we eat contains many elements which are mostly nutrients needed by the human to function well. Examples of these elements are calcium, magnesium, zinc and iron. These elements in food are combined with other elements and the resulting compounds are referred to as minerals. Getting to know the elements essential to our body is important. Do you want to know these elements? Read on and perform the activities prepared for you in this module. At the end of the module, you should be able to: Supplementary Learning Module for Junior High School Learners LESSON Poster of Common Elements with Names, Symbols and Uses 1. Make a poster of the common elements with their names, symbols and uses; and 2. Recognize some elements essential to the human body. What’s in a word? (Part I) Directions: List five words starting from letter A to E that make use of the symbols of the different elements in the periodic table. Be creative. Word/s Example: AcCePt 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
  • 3. 2 What’s in a word? (Part II) Directions: Identify the names of the elements represented by the symbols that you have used to form the word. Word/s Element Names Example: AcCePt Actinium, Cerium, Platinum 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Guide Questions: 1. Among the elements that you have identified from each symbol, which do you think is found in your body? 2. What do you think are the uses of these elements? Good job in finishing the activity! Now, take time to process the information you acquired by accomplishing the next task. POSTER PROMOTION Directions: Using your drawing and coloring materials make a poster of an element based on Table 2. “Some elements essential to life.” The element poster may include the following information: name of the element, element symbol, its food sources, functions in the human body and deficiency condition it may cause. Hi! How did you find the activity? Please check your answers and see how well you did. Don’t worry if you got a low score, this just means that there are more things that you can learn from this module. So, hop on!
  • 4. 3 ELEMENT POSTER ACTIVITY Food Sources Element Name and Symbol Functions in the Human Body Deficiency Condition
  • 5. 4 There are mineral nutrients needed by the body. They are not manufactured by the body although found in body tissues and fluids. They come from the food we eat. Some nutrients, their sources, their role in the human body and deficiency condition they may cause are shown in Table 2. Table 2. Some elements essential to life Element Source Function Deficiency condition Macrominerals Calcium (Ca) Milk, cheese, canned fish with bones, sesame seeds, green leafy vegetables Essential to formation and maintenance of bones and teeth; regulates nerve transmission, muscle contraction, and blood clotting Rickets in children; diseases of the bones in adults such as softening of the bones and decrease in bone mass Magnesium (Mg) Nuts, legumes, cereal grains, dark green vegetables, sea food, chocolate Catalyst in the synthesis of energy-carrier molecules; involved in the synthesis of proteins and relaxation of muscles Fluid loss due to too much alcohol intake; heart failure due to spasms Potassium (K) Orange juice, bananas, dried fruits, potatoes Maintains regular heartbeat, water balance and cell integrity; needed in nerve Sudden death during fasting, poor nerve function, irregular heart beat
  • 6. 5 transmission, carbohydrate and protein metabolism Selenium (Se) Liver, meat, grain, vegetables Part of enzymes; antioxidant Keshan disease (heart disease) Sodium (Na) Meat, table salt, salt- processed food Regulates amount of body fluid; involved in nerve transmission Headache, physical weakness, thirst, poor memory, appetite loss Sulfur (S) Some proteins Component of biomolecules and ions Zinc (Zn) Liver, shellfish, meat, wheat germs, legumes Part of insulin and some 154 enzymes Anemia, stunted growth
  • 7. 6 Microminerals or Trace elements Chromium (Cr) Liver; animal and plant tissues Needed for glucose utilization Loss of insulin efficiency with age Copper (Cu) Liver, kidney, egg yolk, whole grains Helps in the formation of hemoglobin; part of 11 enzymes Rare Fluorine (F) Sea food, fluorinated drinking water Strengthens bone and tooth structure Dental decay Iron (Fe) Liver, meat, green leafy vegetables, whole grains, cocoa beans Component of hemoglobin and myoglobin Anemia, tiredness, and apathy Iodine (I) Sea food, iodized salts Part of thyroxin, regulates rate of energy use Goiter
  • 8. 7 Manganese (Mn) Liver, kidney, wheat germ, legumes, nuts Cofactor for a number of enzymes Weight loss, occasional dermatitis *Source: Chemistry S&T Textbook for Third Year, 2009
  • 9. 8 MY FOOD PLATE Directions: Fill up the food plate of your last meal. It can either be breakfast, lunch or dinner. Look and list five items or products at home that are made of elements. 2. What are the properties of each element and what are they made of that might affect their uses? Item/Product Elements it is made of Properties of each element Uses 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
  • 11. 10 The following terms used in this module are defined as follows: Elements – are chemically the simplest substance and hence cannot be broken down using chemical reactions. Minerals – the resulting compounds when elements in food are in combination with other elements. Periodic Table of Elements – the organized array of all the chemical elements in order of increasing atomic number. Symbol – (chemical symbol) a short notation derived from the name of a chemical element.
