Learning
Objectives
• Define the term nutrition.
• Name the 7 nutrients, their functions and good
sources of each
Extension:
• Review the chemical elements present in fats,
proteins and carbohydrates.
• Review the subunits which make up
carbohydrates, fats and proteins.
Why do we
need food?
Why do we need food?
To supply us with ‘fuel’ for energy.
To provide materials for growth and repair
of tissues.
To help fight disease and keep
our bodies healthy.
What is meant by
“nutrition”
• The taking in of
nutrients which are
organic substances and
mineral ions, containing
raw materials or energy
for growth and tissue
repair, absorbing and
assimilating (using them
to build parts of cells)
them.
What is food?
• All food is made up of different nutrients. Using the
pictures to help can you name all 7?

Question 2
Different people have different energy needs according to gender, age,
level of activity and if they are pregnant.
Due to their size, males generally need more energy than females.
Both male and females will need more energy if they are more active.
Younger children are growing, so may also need more energy than an
elderly person.
Finally, a pregnant lady will need to provide additional energy for the
growth of the baby.

Reading Food Labels
About 10 servings would be needed
0.05 grams of saturated fat would be provided by 50g of product
About 300g of product would be needed to provide a 3 year old with
their daily energy needs
It might be a bad idea for a baby to receive all it´s energy source from
just one product as this would not provide a balanced diet.
