Dan Savage Character Analysis
Just by looking at him, you aren t going to know that Dan Savage is a newspaper column writer for
The Stranger, that founded It Gets Better, a multimedia organization to inspire and assist LGBTQ+
youth.
People need heroes because everyone needs somebody to look up to. Dan is my hero because not only
is he standing up for a community, but he doesn t have to do anything about the problems in the
community if he doesn t feel like doing it.
In my own opinion, Dan Savage holds the characteristic of brave. He shows bravery when he stands
up for who and what he believes in and that takes bravery since there will always be people against
him and his beliefs in some way or another so he has to be brave enough to stay standing and to
continue ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He shows compassion by reaching out and helping LGBTQ+ youth with problems they face like
bullying, family rejection, and self harm. I feel that he shows sympathy and/or empathy for the
problems the youth of this community are facing, since he is part of the community himself, and may
have gone through the same problems.
Now, your opinion may be different from mine, and you may not think that Dan could be described as
unprejudiced. Although, he has shown the trait of unprejudiced by starting the It Gets Better
organization. If he was Prejudiced, the organization most likely never would have started. It may have
even been started, but for the complete opposite reason; to go against LGBTQ+ youth, rather than be
for them. However, the past statements are not the case, and he started the organization with the intent
of helping the individuals that need it.
People need heroes because everyone needs somebody to look up to. Dan Savage is my hero on
account of him being brave, compassionate, and unprejudiced. Considering all of the above, Dan
Savage, newspaper column writer for The Stranger, that started the It Gets Better organization for
LGBTQ+ youth, is my hero. Seeing that he holds traits that go towards my definition of the word,
Hero; A leader who can stand up and care about what they believe in without other people s judgement

George Herbert s Metaphysical Poetry
Metaphysical poetry comes into being as a kind of rebellion against the precedent of Golden Poetry.
Not only is it extremely difficult to define metaphysical poetry, but difficult to decide what poets
practise it and in which of their verses (Eliot.)
If we try to define the Metaphysical Poetry we can say that it is poetry that moves from the image to
the conceit, from the visual to beyond the visual. George Herbert was among a group of poets together
with John Donne, Andrew Marvell, Abraham Cowley and more, who were considered metaphysical
poets. It is difficult to find any precise use of metaphor, simile, or other conceit, which is common to
all the poets and at the same time important enough as an element of style to isolate these poets as a
group (Eliot.) It is to be observed that the language of these poets is as a rule simple and pure; in the
verse of George Herbert this simplicity is carried as far as it can go a simplicity emulated without
success by numerous modern poets. The structure of the sentences, on ... Show more content on

We can see that same unorthodox usage of a banal concept such as love in another Metaphisical poet:
John Donne. Donne in his poems also uses very unconventional ways to describe love, and also was
criticized by Jonson for his unconventional method. In his poem A Valediction Forbidding Mourning ,
he uses ideas from the world of mathematics and geography (a compass) in order to describe the two
lovers. For Jonson it is a combination of dissimilar images, the most heterogeneous ideas are yoked by
violence together. Namely, he sees no connection between compasses and lovers. Herbert, in his
poems, uses this simple idea of love and transcends it into something

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Linocut
Linocut A block made of linoleum
Carving tools Paper fabrics
Linocut is a form of relief printing in which the artist cuts a design into the surface of the block. Then
a mirror image is created when the artist places a paper or fabric over the surface and presses down
with a hand or a roller. The raised parts of the piece transfer over on to the paper or fabric to create the
overall desired print. Linocut has both benefits and drawbacks as a form of printmaking. The major
benefit of this form of art is that it is softer than wood making it easier to carve and use. Another
benefit is that color can be added to the prints. However, there are several drawbacks of using linocut

The artist first coats the metal plate in an acid resistant substance known as ground and is drawn on.
The artist then uses a sharp tool or etching needle down to the plate. Hard grounds are employed for
finely detailed linear work. Soft ground can also be used, and virtually any tool can be used to expose
the plate and resembles crayon and pencil drawings (Sayre, 2012). Whichever ground is used by the
artist is then placed in an acid bath. The acid eats, or etches, into the plate where the lines have been
drawn; the longer the exposed plate is left in the bath, and the stronger the solution, the greater the
width and depth of the etched line (Sayre, 2012). An artist can also create a way in stopping out a
section by using varnishes or ground over the etched surface. Once the plate is finished being exposed
to acid, it is inked and printed. Etching has both benefits and drawbacks. Some of the benefits to
etching are that it is a fluid and free process and it is able to capture the sense of immediacy as a
sketch. However, some drawbacks to etching include it is a medium that requires calculations and
planning, an ability to manipulate chemicals, and a willingness to risk losing everything in order to
achieve the desired effect (Sayre,

Financial Data Analysis Daphnnee Johnson HCS 577 March 18, 2013 Sharon Gomes Sanders
Financial Data Analysis After reviewing the balance sheet for Patton Fuller Hospital for 2008 and
2009, there are significant differences that are noticeable. The retained earnings (or Net Worth or
Unrestricted Fund Balance ) drastically decreased from 2008 to 2009 (Apollo Group, 2006). The
dollar amount decrease is 209,471, this makes a decrease of over 65%. Long term debt increase to
more than 116% from 2008 to 2009 as well (Apollo Group, 2006). This is a massively huge increase.

This occurred in 2008, but in 2009 in accordance to her will, the hospital received a money donation
from her estate. This $1,000,000 donation is noted as an unrestricted donation (Apollo Group, 2006).
This unrestricted donation is recorded on the Interim Statement of Income in December 2009 (Apollo
Group, 2006). Declines in the stock market and real estate markets resulted in a sharp drop in the
return on investment income. This caused PFCH to reassess the value of its investments and, on their
auditors advice, to write down those assets (Apollo Group, 2006, p. 3). Another reason the number
were so drastically different was because every December Patton Fuller Community Hospital conducts
an annual inventory (Apollo Group, 2006). When the hospital conducted its inventory their expenses
for their supplies were way underestimated by about a million dollars (Apollo Group, 2006). So this
had to be added on as a cost to December s statement. This underestimate of supply expenses made
January to November s reports not correct, so December had to report the actual figures (Apollo
Group, 2006). Therefore, December looked like it was a crazy month for the hospital. Following the
favorable settlement of some managed care contract disputes, net patient revenue increased by 9%
over the previous year, with an average

Lit Knowledge and Evil
Knowledge offers the individual who attains it the capacity to differentiate between evil and good or
wrong and right. Therefore, must we disregard the likelihood that it may not in fact be knowledge, but
rather the decisions we settle for subsequent to its attainment that brings about demise of individuals?
The paper will try to examine the viewpoints of two writers, Christopher Marlowe and William
Shakespeare, concerning the subject of knowledge probably being a downfall as they have inferred in
their own plays, Doctor Faustus and Hamlet respectively. Amusingly, the chief persona of both ...

If we consider the topic of knowledge from a theological viewpoint, it appears that the heavens do not
deny individuals with knowledge absolutely, but instead establish a boundary to it. Eve and Adam did
not appear to be completely uninformed before ingesting the prohibited fruit. Therefore, as Faustus
becomes conceited of his broad knowledge, his demise is determined upon by the heavens nearly as if
he now symbolizes a menace:
Till, swollen with cunning of a self conceit,
His waxen wings did mount above his reach,
And, melting, heavens conspir d his overthrow... (Marlowe, 2001, Prologue 20 22).
As of a moralistic approach, Faustus attitude can be compared to that of contemporary day scientists
who set no boundaries to their experimentations and attempt to be God. Conversely, this last similarity
does not actually relate to the character Hamlet, Hamlet the play concurs with Doctor Faustus in that
Hamlet emerges in the play as a scholar. In short, it is supposed that he already owns a immense deal
of knowledge, but it appears he is short of the knowledge the occurrences in Denmark whilst he was
gone. He is deficient in the knowledge of his father s execution and about the killer. Then it appears
that the heavens plot against Hamlet too. Each time his father s spirit tries to elucidate these subjects,
the sun ascends, and the spirit has to depart:

The Founding And Spread Of Buddhism, Hinduism,...
Often in history, when something is done right and praised by the masses, it is mimicked in some way
in future instances. This can be seen in the variety of religions that have sprung up over time and
gained large followings. Although they are all unique in their own way, certain aspects connect them
and allow one to see how they all, in some way, influence each other. When analyzing the founding
and spread of Buddhism, Sikhism, Confucianism, and Hinduism, it is evident that although there are
many distinguishing differences between the four religions, there are multiple similarities that link
them all with each other. The word Buddhism is derived from the word budhi , to awaken, so it makes
sense that the creation of the religion begins with its founder s awakening. It is said that Buddhism
started in the 6th century due to the actions of its founder, Siddhartha Gautama, the wealthy warrior
son of a king and queen in Lumbini (now Nepal). When Siddhartha was young, a soothsayer predicted
that he would become a renouncer and his father showered him in luxuries, hoping to change this
prediction. However, as a young man, Siddhartha went on a series of chariot rides in which he
witnessed a variety of suffering people and came to the realization that material pleasures, such as his
own, only serve to mask human suffering. After entering a period of severe and damaging
renunciation and realizing that it only added suffering, Siddhartha meditated under a tree and woke up

Themes In Fahrenheit 451
Books are irreplaceable parts of society that help to form the opinions and beliefs of the people that
are within it. Without books we would lack the knowledge of those in the past, and the ability to see
the world from a different perspective. Each book contains information different from the last, but
each book is written with a purpose. Each book is written for a reason, and what we are able to obtain
from the books that we have been given reflect the person that we are. Without books we would be
lost as people, as members within the community, and as a society as a whole we would be searching
for something that we can not find. We would be hopeless and censored from the knowledge that is
given to us through books. It is hard to imagine what we would know without books, if anything at all.
The past would become the present and the future would have no meaning. Fahrenheit 451 displays a
deep and thought provoking message to those that read it by showing us what it would be like to live
in a society where we are forced to believe one thing, and are never able to form our own opinions.
Proving that happiness doesn t come from peace among the people, but rather the ability to to be able
to live our life the way that makes you happy. Fahrenheit 451 contains many valuable themes and
lessons that apply to our lives today and also remind us of some of the realities we are faced with.
Fahrenheit 451 is about a society that is consumed in censorship and the affects that come from

Summary Of A Poem For Black Hearts By Amiri Baraka
Shortly after the assassination of Malcolm X in February 1965, dozens of writers and poets published
pieces to honor the life and legacy of the Civil Rights mogul. Among the earliest poems dedicated to
the fallen hero of the Black community is Amiri Baraka s A Poem for Black Hearts, which became one
of the most widely circulated poems of the time period. The poem, which eulogizes Malcolm X,
recounts the violent murder that took place in Harlem a horrific, and tragic event that left the Black
community traumatized. Though, Baraka uses the poem as a call to action, urging his Black audience
to take action and to stimulate a mentality of total self consciousness. As Baraka stresses central
Malcolm X s philosophy towards solving social injustice self acceptance, self determination, and self
action are essential elements for Black liberation. The 27 line, free verse poem s speaker is Baraka
himself. Baraka immortalizes Malcolm and captures the essence of his legacy by personifying his
body parts and attributing their significance to strong qualities Malcolm possessed. He employs the

work experience in the crematory, and the awareness and cognition of death. Caitlin mentioned that
she works in a crematorium because she wanted to overcome the fear of death. Because when she was
eight years old at Windward Mall, she saw a little girl climb up to where the escalator met the second

Agriculture In Mesoamerican Civilization
The Mesoamerican people who inhabited the Western Hemisphere developed independently from the
rest of the world by natural barriers set by oceans to both the east and the west. From the time period
spanning from 1200s BCE to 1500s CE, the Olmecs, Mayans, and Aztecs lived on the isolated land for
centuries, establishing their distinctive scientific and academic achievements. At the other side of the
globe in Mesopotamia, a civilization in the form of a city state called Sumer also incorporated
achievements similar to that of the Olmecs, Mayans, and Aztecs. The extensive use of irrigation was

Throughout the three civilizations, various methods of dealing with crops were introduced in attempts
of increasing yield and production. The Olmecs developed irrigation, which made agriculture an
important element of Mesoamerican life as it brought surpluses that led to population growth and
civilization expansion. Alongside irrigation is the extensive planting and harvesting of crops like
beans, squash, and especially maize that became the basis and stable crops of the community. The
Mayans continued the agricultural success of the preceding people by draining swamps and erecting
platforms for farming. These two practices greatly expanded the amount of land agriculture could take
place in a geography without vast fertile lands, further leading to population boost and empire
building in addition to the long lasting practice of irrigation. With with the aid of innovations made
into reality by the two previous groups of people, the Aztecs kept the tradition of constant
improvement to current conditions. Building up on the Mayan efforts of draining swamps, the Aztecs
developed Chinampas. These aquatic water beds that acted as floating islands extended the existing
use of irrigation on the rich aquatic environment of the capital, Tenochtitlan. With these multiple
examples and instances of agricultural advancements that continued and improved on the products and
practices of previous civilizations, changes still coexist in the middle as the use of calendar differed

Coffee Filter Essay
Take a clean paper towel or coffee filter. Moisten it. Place 10 or 20 seeds onto it (10 is better). Fold the
seeds. If you use exactly ten seeds, you will find it much better to calculate the percentage of
germination after that. Here is why. If 5 out of 10 seeds germinate, then 50% of your seeds will grow
during the season. That s pretty risky. So you need more than 70% or else planting will not be worth
the effort. Ideally, 8 or 9 out of 10 seeds will sprout. However, if you get less than 70%, you had better
not put work into it at all. Buy new seeds for the upcoming planting season. Now, let s get back to the
topic. We reached a point where you fold the seeds. Then place them in a sandwich/zipper bag and zip
most of the way. Ideally, you will leave some room for the seeds to be able to breath. If you want to
test out several different seeds, write down the name of the plant on each bag to avoid errors when
identifying the seeds. Store the bag with seeds at room temperature (about 70 degrees Fahrenheit/21

The Transition Of Energy Systems
The energy systems seen in the present day are vastly different from those seen in the past two
decades amid the ongoing transition of energy systems. The issue of climate change and the

Developing energy systems of the future is one of the central challenges to policy makers, a challenge
which is complex and multifaceted (Miller et al 2013:135) as large scale shifts in the use of fuels and

the UK of an 80 per cent reduction in CO₂ by 2050 (Foxon et al 2008).
There are various reasons as to why the energy transition to a low carbon system and use of renewable
sources of energy are contemporary. The first of which is the worryingly high amounts of GCG
emissions in the atmosphere, caused by a multitude of things such as population growth, demand for
energy supply in conjunction with the inefficient use of energy, which is chiefly satisfied by the use of
fossil fuels and also economic and industrial expansion. The need to reduce such emissions is ever
important as if carbon dioxide emissions from the use of fossil fuel continue to rise at current levels it
will cause the average global temperature to rise by 5°C or more over the next 100 years (IPCC 2007).
Another reason is the dwindling supply of fossil fuels available, Roberts (2004) suggesting there is a
looming crisis ahead despite it being argued by some global governments that supplies of fossil fuels
were ample to meet world

A Study On Oral History Assignment
Oral History Assignment For this assignment, I had chosen to interview my uncle, Atif. He is 43 years
old, married with four children, and currently resides in the Greater Toronto Area. He was born in
Karachi, Pakistan where he lived in an extended family with his parents, brothers sisters,
grandparents, aunts, uncles, and their kids. He had moved to Canada on October 26th 1990, by
himself, to fulfill his undergraduate degree at the University of Manitoba in Computer Science and
Math. He is now working at CGI as a Professional IT Manager. He describes himself as introverted,
responsible, independent, hard working, driven, logical and analytical. This is evident throughout his
interview, as he had a very analytical approach on observing advertisements. While Atif was growing
up back in Pakistan, advertising was a lot less relevant because of where he was, who he was and how
he interacted with the media. Firstly, there was only one channel that ran on TV from 5pm until 11pm.
Though, only on Sundays, the channel started from early mornings. There were no 24 hour broadcasts.
Very select commercials appeared on TV, that too mostly for necessity items. One that he remembers
fondly is a commercial for toothpaste. What attracted Atif about this commercial was its catchy jingle.
Mclain s Toothpaste! Did you Mclain your teeth today? The kids then would chant back Twice a day,
every day! Atif, still to this day, with radiant smile on his face, could not forget the memorable

The Discovery Of Mount Everest
Over nine thousand people died and thousands were displaced when an earthquake with a magnitude
of 8.1 hit Nepal in April 2015. Consequently, this earthquake triggered the deadliest event in the
history of Mount Everest when an avalanche killed 19 people two weeks later (1). This tragedy was
caused by two pieces of the planet s crust that have been colliding for millions of years now.
Moreover, this collision is based on the scientific theory of plate tectonics that cases the large scale
motion of the planet s lithosphere. The same theory also explains how Mount Everest, a part of the
Himalayas, was affected. Nepal s seismic nature and the Himalayas are connected through the
collision of the Indian Plate and the Eurasian plate. First and foremost, plate tectonic theory deals with
the idea that lithospheric plates or tectonic plates move around the crust. Tectonic plates are slabs of
the Earth s lithosphere which is a combination of the crust and uppermost mantle. The lithosphere is
characterized by its rigid and cooler nature. On the other hand, the asthenosphere is hotter and more
viscous and lies beneath the lithosphere. Together, the lithosphere and the asthenosphere makes up the
outer layers of the Earth. These two layers are really important because the rigid pieces of the
lithosphere ride on the viscosity of the asthenosphere (2). As previously mentioned, the Nepal
earthquake was caused collision of these plates and it has numerous underlying factors that started

The Importance Of Censorship In Hollywood Movies
Prior to the current Hollywood rating system, in which the responsibility of determining what the
viewer should see is left in the hands of the viewer (with the exception of R rated movies), Hollywood
studios used self censorship to control insure what they were showing audiences was appropriate. The
way that Hollywood studios were able to do this was through the enforcement of the Movie Picture
Production Code (MPPC). The push for regulation of the motion picture industry picked up steam in
the 1920 s. The coming of sound allowed for films to be much more realistic and obscene than silent
films. In an effort to sell tickets and pique the public interest, movie studios began to make sexualized,
profane, and violent movies. The late 20 s birthed stars like Mae West, whose character almost solely
on sexual quips and innuendo. In response to these films, Daniel Lord, a Jesuit priest, submitted a
production code to the studios, in 1929. Much like the public is concerned currently with the effects
that violent video games can have on adolescents and society in general, Lord was particularly
concerned with the moral degradation the movies could have on society. Consequently, he created a
code that likely only a G rated modern movie would pass now. However, fearing the economic
consequences that a catholic boycott or governmental ban would have on Hollywood profits, the
Motion Picture Production and Distributors Association of America (MPPDA), which was made up of

How To Reduce Gun Violence In The United States
In the United States, there is a mass shooting that kills four or more people every twenty three hours.
Gun violence has risen to epidemic proportions. The United States has allowed guns to become so
easily accessible that in four out of five states anyone, even someone without a gun license, can buy
an unregistered firearm from a private vendor. It has also become incredibly easy to be approved for a
gun in most states. Currently it is more difficult to get a driver s license, even with extensive testing,
than it is to own a firearm. We, as a nation, cannot expect to progress far if we don t even moderately
control the flow of firearms that is flooding into the streets. We have the capacity to fix this and create
a safer country for everyone.
In order to improve the yearly death tolls from gun violence, we have to limit how one can even get a
gun in the first place. Currently, the country only has ten states that prohibit the sale of guns at gun
shows and through private vendors, who don t have proper licensing. Another ten states only prohibit
handgun sales, and the other thirty states have nothing. This means one can walk into a gun show with
cash and walk out the same day with a gun. If we prohibit ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

firearms and hopefully encourage them to find the medical help they may require. Ultimately,
whoever has purchased a gun may be inconvenienced through the process, but the reward is that guns

Seven Steps to Solving the Housing Crisis
The crisis that America has found herself in, to be completely blunt and honest, all revolves around
stupidity and bad choices. American citizens that had absolutely no business even thinking of buying a
house flooded the market and were encouraged by greedy bankers that were out to make a profit,
without thinking of the consequences or morals involved. Now the government has over stepped their
boundaries and are spending this country into such deep debt, which makes one think that that light at
the end of the tunnel is an oncoming train with no hope of slowing down, let alone stopping. The
solution to this economic crisis is outlined in seven easy baby steps: 1. America needs to create a small
emergency fund (at least a million ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Houses would be paid for, jobs would open up, the stock market would probably not shift as much as
it does, welfare programs would become obsolete, over 70% of Americans would stop living pay

which would make us all winners, and broke people would stop buying houses that they can t afford.
If everyone bought houses that they could afford then there would be no more foreclosures; especially
if everyone had an emergency fund to give them an alternative if something happened. If businesses
weren t built on debt, especially sole proprietorships, then businesses wouldn t have to lay a bunch of
people off or cut down productivity. America needs to save to help take care of her people and
Americans need to take care of themselves so that we all win in the end.
Lastly, America needs to build a bunch of wealth and give a bunch of it away. This concept is for the
government and her people because when one gives and it becomes a habit, that person is forever
changed. It reminds them that it s not all about them. It s not about getting a bunch of stuff that they
can t afford to impress people that they don t even like. It s about taking care of your neighbor; it s
about being a selfless person and nation in a selfless world. America needs to invest in herself again,

someone escorts Ms. Gossa into the building daily, which appears contrary to the security clearance
process. Effective today, she has exhausted the number of visits allowed, and will not be allowed to

Automatic Temperature Fan Speed Control
INTRODUCTION: This is a standard circuit which can be used to adjust the brightness of mains
lights and the speed of AC motors. It uses a triac, diac and has a radio frequency interference (RFI)
noise suppression circuit built into it as well. The circuit controls the average power to a load through
the triac by phase control. The AC supply is applied to the load for only a controlled fraction of each
cycle. The triac is held in an OFF condition for a portion of its cycle then is triggered ON at a time
determined by the circuit. Each time the triac is turned on, the load current changes very quickly a few
micro seconds from zero to a value determined by the lamp resistance and the value of the mains
voltage at that instant in time. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At this instant in time no current is flowing in either direction. This is the point at which a dimmer is
electronically synchronized to turn the power ON or OFF. By chopping the waveform at the zero
crossing point, smooth dimming can be achieved without the lamp flickering. This turning on and off
of the power device occurs every time the mains crossing point is reached (half phase), 100 or 120
times per second. Typically light dimmers are manufactured using a Triac or Thyristor as the power
control device. These electronic parts are semiconductors not dissimilar to transistors. A Thyristor is a
Uni. directional device and hence, because AC power flows in both directions, two are needed. A triac
is a bidirectional device and therefore only one is needed. An electronic circuit determines the point in
time at which they turn ON (conduct). The ON state continues until the next zero crossing point, at
which point the device turns itself OFF. The electronic circuit then provides a delay, which equates to
the dimness of the lamp, before turning the control device back on. The slight capacitance of the load,
filters the chopped waveform resulting in a smooth light output. Some controllers use a
microprocessor control with the above timing function being handled by an analogue circuit. More
sophisticated systems, called digital dimmers, operate the switching direct from microprocessor. This
has the advantage of greater reliability, quieter operation, lower cost and smaller

Caribbean Piracy
Piracy of the Caribbean It seems to be common knowledge that murder, thievery, and full blown naval
warfare supposedly plagued the Caribbean Sea from the 1600 s to the 1800 s. Countless tons of
priceless goods such as spices, gems, rare metals, and silks were snatched right from under merchant
noses (Hanna 42). Goods that were the basis of Triangle Trade economies, goods such as sugar,
tobacco, weapons, cotton, and sadly the lives of enslaved humans (which were considered
commodities and goods), were being spirited away at the great misfortune of the commercial based
nations (Lane). National tensions were climbing higher and higher. Allegedly this could all be blamed
upon piracy, buccaneering, and privateering being at an all time high; this earned the time period the
monomer of The Golden Age of Piracy (Benjamin). And yet, despite all the terror and disorder
previously descried, these pirates generally had a considerably better effect (maybe even a net good

How Sex Work Affect The Lives Of Sex Workers
When one thinks about prostitution or they hear the words sex worker , the typical picture that
resonates through their mind is a women standing on a street corner, wearing revealing or provocative

image of prostitution, this common image is not always accurate. Not only is the stereotypical image
of prostitution incorrect, but the lifestyle that is associated with sex work differs greatly depending on
your geographical location along with the history behind how sex work in that region originated. How
others, including the government accept your work can also have an effect on the way of life for sex

Women who partook in the sex industry were seen as dirty and sinful, which was the case during the
middle ages in Amsterdam. During this time period, sex workers were sometimes buried alive while
other women had their ears cut off for sleeping with another man. Even though prostitutes endured
brutal punishments brought on by other s beliefs, later in the 1700 1800s, prostitution was seen as
tolerable. During this time, Amsterdam was a booming port area. In areas that house many
transportation hubs and terminals, prostitution has a functional aspect of ease (Aalbers and Sabat 3).
Due to the overwhelming number of traders, sailors, and ship workers, prostitution became a social
norm for travelers in Amsterdam. However, during this time, soliciting sex work and brothels were
illegal. A brothel can be simply defined as a place where customers visit sex workers. Many brothels
during the early twenty century disguised themselves as bars or parlors, which gave sex workers the
opportunity to accumulate business easier. However, since brothels were illegal, most sex workers had
to work alone or in shady situations. Although the Netherland s government thought the prohibition of
brothels would decrease the rate of prostitution and sexually transmitted disease, the act became
counterproductive instead. Typically, when you take on a job such as prostitution secretly, then the risk

Detrimental Effects of the Vietnam War
The Vietnam War was, and continues to be, one of America s darkest moments, one that nearly tore
the nation apart. In order to stop the spread of communism in Europe and Asia, the United States aided
French imperialists and their reoccupation of Vietnam. At first, the U.S took a position of neutrality to
both countries, but by early 1947, they began fighting in support of France. This war, lasting over 20
years, became the longest and most unpopular war in the 20th century. Overall, the Vietnam War was
detrimental to the United States because it caused a massive debt from the 1960s to the 1990s, turned
the American people against their government, and many troops were neglected and despised upon
their return.

They speculated that if one land in a region came under the influence of Communism, the surrounding

was used by U.S administrators during the Cold War to clarify and justify the need for American
intervention around the world. The idea had been in existence for quite some time, but it was only
clear what it really was when President Dwight D. Eisenhower put it into words in 1954, when
referring to communism. In order for Vietnam to be free of a Communist government, the United
States decided to ally with France so the Vietminh could not gain more power. Since the Americans
were fresh out of fighting the Korean and Chinese Civil War, they believed Communism could be
spreading everywhere. Beginning in 1950, the United States initially pledged $15 million dollars in
aid of the French. This was the start of an American debt that would damage the U.S economy for
almost 30 years. The President of this time, Lyndon B. Johnson, played down the United States role in
Vietnam for two reasons. He believed that if Americans felt that this war had to be fought in order to
protect their country from Communism, the public would demand a full scale, no holds barred war

L-Asparagine Lab Report
The concentrations of L arginine and L asparagine were measured in the range 0.110 mM. Data was
collected from the fluorescence intensity of the Arg and Asn sensing membranes at the two emission
wavelengths (λem = 565 and 625 nm) at an excitation wavelength of 460 nm (λex = 460 nm). The

out and do something about these said issues. John F. Kennedy was elected in 1961, and the state our
country was in was not as great as it could have been. In fact, it was not good at all. In North America,
African Americans were discriminated against in many areas including education, work ... Show more

Let both sides unite to heed, in all corners of the earth, the command of Isaiah to undo the heavy
burdens, and [to] let the oppressed go free.
Here in this passage you can see Kennedy using the phrase let both sides, which entails all nations to
rise up to the calling for world peace and prosperity.
In Martin Luther King Jr. s I Have A Dream speech, King also uses rhetorical strategies to appeal to
his audience.
We can see pathos in the quote: I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the
true meaning of its creed: We hold these truths to be self evident: that all men are created equal. This
is appealing to pathos because a dream deals with emotion and feelings that you wish to happen or
carry out.
Ethos is present in King s speech when he states: We must forever conduct our struggle on the high
plane of dignity and discipline. We must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical
violence. It really says a lot when King can effectively communicate his ideas on peace while
maintaining that he is against violence.
We can see the logos Martin Luther King Jr. uses when he refers to Lincoln s promise to our country
that was left unfulfilled.
Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand today, signed the
Emancipation Proclamation. This momentous

Keats Concerned With Money
According to Porscha Fermanis, substantial cricticism on Lamia posits that the poem is observed that
this poem is concerned with money (Fermanis, 2009, p. 99) and that Keats s own anxiety over money
during the composition of Lamia resonates throughout the poem (Kelvin Everest summarized in
Fermains 99) but Keats represents his view about money in this way that it relays the large debate
about the effects of trade and commerce on the social, economic and political condition of England
(Fermanis, 2009, p. 99). Marjorie Levinson, who follows Marxist and Freudian principles of fetishism,
commodity exchange and symbolic capital, seems curious to know about the mechanisms due to
which love and money, pleasure and power, consumption and production ... Show more content on

Lamia focuses on this inability of his. The poet wants to say that things aren t as simple as they appear
to be by exposing the selfishness and falseness of Lycius love despite it being a tale of romance; thus
creating an ambiguity. Lamia focuses on Lycius s inability to distinguish between his private dreams
of pleasure and the social world outside himself. Lycius is characterized as a romantic dreamer, a male
lover, who fails to see his lover as an individual other. Lamia is objectified by Lycius as something
that serves the purpose of stimulating his imagination and fulfilling his desires only, as he sees her
more as a part of his dream than his reality. What seems to lie at the heart of Keats romances, and
more specifically in Lamia, is that romantic love is nothing more than a selfish feeling that comes to
satisfy personal desires without any regards. How Lycius conceptions of reality are shaped by his
romantic perception is exemplified by Keats throughout the poem. Romance and Lycius s romantic
love has been linked with egotistical and selfish desires by Keats who associates female respect and
idealization more with Lycius s desires for fame and glory than anything else (Schulkins, 2014, p.

Teaching Philosophy Statement
After completing this teacher interview activity, I am beyond excited to become a teacher. I feel this
way not only because Heather strongly agrees that teaching is an optimal choice of a young person
today but due to the passion she possesses for her job. As Heather described her classroom and what it
is like to spend all day with children, I just cannot wait until I am teaching. Children have this
undeniable excitement about them; everyday is a good day, as they do not have a care in the world. I
hope this positive outlook on life with fill my body everyday just as it has there s. Ultimately, what I
am most excited to do is make an impact on a child s life. There is no greater feel in the world that
knowing that that you have helped someone. I hope that I will make an impact on every student I have
so that they can think back and say, that teacher changed my life. I know that this profession is not
going to be all fun and games or that everyday will be a good day but I am up for the challenge.

She is also one of those teachers that would do anything for her students. Heather knew even early on
that teaching is what she aspired to do; she loves working with kids. She agrees that if she could do it
over again, she would still become a teacher and it shows in her words and actions on the kind of
teacher she is. I envy people who find a career that incorporates what they love in life. The quote, if
you love what you do, you never work a day in your life is a quote I desire to fulfill in my life. Based

Rfid Ethical Issues
Ethical Issues of the RFID Technology
Topic Description
For this policy paper I have chosen Radio frequency identification (RFID) technology. RFID is able to
provide a lot of advantages in the supply chain management, health care system, government
operations. RIFD uses electronic magnetic fields for automatically identifying and tracking the tags
attached with the objects. The tags contain electronic information. The RFID devices consist of an
antenna which emits a radio signals for activating a tag and read and write the electronic data to those.
The technology is able to provide a lot of advantages to the users but there are several ethical
considerations associated with the use of this technology. Mostly the ethical issues are associated

The Age Of Innocence By Edith Wharton And The Waste Land
The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton and The Waste Land by T.S. Eliot has similar recurring
imagery. Both literary works portray two women in a way and compare these two women characters.
Wharton s portrayal of gender in the society of Old New York illustrates the perfect woman through
May Welland along with the imperfect woman through Ellen Olenska, whereas in the poem The Waste
Land by T.S. Eliot, the role and sexuality of women is shown through the juxtaposition of two women
in the section A Game of Chess.
In The Age of Innocence, Edith Wharton portrays gender through the juxtaposition of Ellen and May.
May is the type of woman who personifies innocence. She always keeps up with her appearance and
personality even when she ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Newland fears that May wont be able to see any of the world even if she opens her eyes. Just like the
cavefish isn t able to see after living in darkness for years, May might not be able to see after living in
the shadow of society. Newland is attempting to draw May away from her innocent personality and
open her eyes to the world. He fears that May will end up like a copy of her mother, who perfectly
portrays the role of a wife in society. Newland wants more out of May, not just the perfect housewife.
Ellen Olenska portrays the other side of the juxtaposition of women in The Age of Innocence. She is
more individualistic than May and her experiences outside of the United States such as her failed
marriage in Europe show that Ellen is a woman who is independent. For this reason, Ellen fails to
grasp the social code once she enters the society of Old New York. A great example comes at the
beginning of the novel when Ellen enters the opera in clothing that is provocative for the event. When
Ellen enters the opera in this European style dress that reveals too much shoulder, she shocks Old New
York. The suggestion of this headdress, which gave her what was then called a Josephine look, was
carried out in the cut of the dark blue velvet gown rather theatrically caught up under her bosom by a
girdle with a large old fashioned clasp. The wearer of this unusual dress, who seemed quite
unconscious of the attention it was attracting [...] (6, Wharton). The

Tyco Scandal Essay
Part 1 Facts of the Case
Prior to the Tyco scandal, the company was one of America s largest conglomerates, with operating
revenues of 38 billion dollars and 240,000 employees, worldwide. Tyco Laboratories began operations
in 1960, performing experimental work for the U.S. government. The firm went public in 1964 and
quickly expanded, mostly by acquisition, to exploit the commercial applications of its work. Dennis
Kozlowski joined the company in 1975 as an assistant controller. The company subsequently shifted
its focus from growth to profits within its three primary divisions: fire protection, electronics, and
packaging. Kozlowski joined Tyco s board in 1987 and became president and chief operating officer
two years later. Kozlowski ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The remainder of the 250 top managers resigned shortly after.
C. How was the scandal uncovered and by whom?
The situation began to unfold when the Securities and Exchange Commission was probing into a
restatement of the company s stock price. Kozlowski s business practices raised some eyebrows. In
1999, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) initiated an inquiry into Tyco s practices that
resulted in a restatement of the company s earnings. In January, 2002, questionable accounting
practices came to light. Tyco had forgiven a $19 million, no interest loan to Kozlowski in 1998 and
had paid the CEO s income taxes on the loan. It was found that he company s stock price had been
overrated, and that the CEO and CFO had sold 100 million dollars worth of shares, and then stated to
the public that he was holding them, which was a misrepresentation and misled the investors.
The major conspiracy was uncovered by Manhattan District Attorney, Robert Morgenthau, who was
investigating Kozlowski for income tax evasion for some fine art work that he had purchased. As
Morgenthau kept digging into the record keeping of Tyco and Kozlowski, it was determined that there
were other situations that had occurred, such as a 10 million dollar loan that was totally forgiven by
Tyco, and all interest was billed to the corporation. It became apparent on January

Blood Imagery In Macbeth
Corruption of the mind often leads people to their ultimate downfall, and sometimes they become too
far gone to correct. Shakespeare wrote many tragic plays, but Macbeth is by far the bloodiest play
written to this day. This becomes evident with Shakespeare s use of blood to portray the advancements
of mental disease. Macbeth begins the play as Lord of Glamis, with Lady Macbeth as his lady, and a
sincere love for each other, and each other s power. As the plot continues we follow these characters as
their previous lives disintegrate through their horrendous acts in need of power. In Macbeth, William
Shakespeare uses blood imagery to convey Macbeth and Lady Macbeth s character development.
Macbeth, Macbeth s tragic hero, goes through a terrible ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After Macbeth murders Duncan, he confides in his wife he fears that he will never be rid of his guilt,
to which Lady Macbeth replies, A little water clears us of this deed (II.ii.65). She calms down her
husband by telling him, that no one will know what they have done and they will easily be rid of their
guilt. She remains calm and level headed even though her husband just committed a murder, which
could mean the death of both of them if someone discovers their deed. She believes that the blood on
their hands can easily wash away, and there will be no evidence of their part in the murder. Later on in
the play, the audience sees that she no longer has a sense of equanimity, but appears frigid and
paranoid. The Doctor and Gentlewoman see Lady Macbeth sleepwalking, and she rubs her hands
while saying: Out, damned spot! Out, I say! (V.i.30). Lady Macbeth looks like a mad woman, who
hallucinates due to the guilt she bares. Shakespeare implies that the stain Lady Macbeth struggles to
get off of her hands comes from the blood spilled from murders she helped commit. If earlier a little
bit of water could wash away the blood of the kings murder, then evidently the murders are piling up,
and the amount of blood on her hands seems uncontrollable, and she can no longer clean up her
husband s mess. Shakespeare morphs Lady Macbeth from acting calm and level headed to behaving
insecure and paranoid through the use of blood

Bringing Dinosaurs Back to Life: Digital Art, Science, and Speculative Media in Jurassic Park s
Making of Documentary
Throughout the history of science, there has not been an animal creature that sparked the human s
fantasy as iconographically as the dinosaurs. Extinct from the face Earth about 65 million years ago,
dinosaurs have become a representation of the vulnerability of our species and the dramatic forces of
nature. To a certain extent, such realization has been possible due to Steven Spilberg s science fiction
film Jurassic Park (1993) and its impact on popular culture, including three Oscars and over a billion
dollars in revenue worldwide. Although in The Making of Jurassic Park the production work is
represented in fundamental ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, it would have been interesting to see the perspectives of actors in being part of a reality
that they could not see instantly during the acting since the CGI and robotics of the dinosaurs would
only be added during the post production stage. It is also worth mentioning that, on the production
stage in Hawaii, Spielberg mentions his vision on having actors who could be as naturalistic as
possible, instead of casting movie icon starts. Considering the and technological development of the
90s, the audience needed to believe in the components of reality proposed in order to be taken in the
journey the film proposes; otherwise, the interlocutor would never believe in the fantasy that Jurassic
Park aimed to

Sugar Dbq
Sugar DBQ
During the sixteenth through the eighteenth centuries the sugar trade was driven by high consumer
demand, and the slave trade. Sugar was so high in consumer demand and addicting that in certain
areas an average person would consume sixteen pounds a year. Evidence of this is shown in document
G. The document conveys the annual per capita consumption ( in pounds ) from the year 1700 to the
year 1770 in England. When analyzing document C, readers realize that the high amount of
consumption is due to sugar s highly addictive property. This document written by Benjamin Moseley,
M.D. in the year 1800 states, ¬¬¬The increased consumption of sugar, and increasing demand for it,
exceeded all comparison with any other article, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another consequence of the slave life is shown in document k. It is to the cheapness of the labour of
these poor people that those costly and extensive works, which are necessary in a sugr plantation are
derived. Slaves were not paid for their labor, slaves only had an original price when sold to a master,
after that slaves worked without pay. However slaves were not the only ones who lived with
consequences. Document E explains the health consequences for consuming sugar. Children greatly
injure their gums and teeth by eating sugar, and sweet things, whereas (cavity filled) teeth and
corroded gums are most evidently owing to improper food for children. Sugar if consumed too much,
could affect the health of children and most likely adults as well. All in all, the sugar trade had
consequences which included slavery and the health of the general public.
In conclusion, The sugar trade was most successful due to the high consumer demand and the slave
trade. This is shown by the evidence of sugar s addictive properties and its easy use as a sweetener
with certain goods. However sugar does have its health and slavery issues, not allowing Africans and
other slaves to live they life they

Tpn Nutrition Case Study
t has been pointed out that there is a possibility of deficiencies in trace elements during TPN nutrition
control procedures without the addition of trace elements, and, in fact, in several foreign countries
have developed TPN solutions containing plural trace elements for the purposes of therapy. (9) In this
studied we applied a TPN solution to a group of rats with a trace element deficient diet and compared
it with a group of rats with a TPN diet supplemented with iron, zinc, copper, manganese, and iodine
were compared while the rats were alive. First, with respect to blood properties (RBC, Hb, Hct, MCV,
and MCH), the levels of group A, B, and C significantly decreased compared to those of group D.
Groups A, B, and C showed signs of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, iron concentrations in the brain, heart, liver, testis, and tibia in group B tended to shower
higher values than those of group A, even though they didn t reach the same levels as group D. It was
suggested that if the nutrition management was continued for a longer period of time and the trace
element solution was used, that there is a possibility that the blood fluid properties and iron deficiency
state of the subjects could have been improved.
The occurrence of deficiencies during the time of TPN treatments which have been cured by zinc has
been reported numerous times, (2, 3) and it is widely accepted that adding zinc to TPN solutions is
necessary. When comparing groups A and C, the zinc concentration in group A in plasma and the tibia
s of subjects showed a significantly lower value, and it is possible that the TPN treatment made zinc
deficiency worse. The level of zinc in group B (the trace element mixed solution group) was almost
the same as group D. These doses seemed to be proper for alleviating zinc deficiency.
ALP uses zinc as a coenzyme, and it has been reported that when zinc is intraperitoneally
administered to zinc deficient rats, ALP levels increase markedly. (11) In this experiment ALP levels
were elevated by administration of the trace element mixed solution. This change in ALP levels was
consistent with the change in plasma zinc concentration levels. Declines is zinc concentration in blood
plasma or ALP would reflect zinc

The Cleveland Cavaliers Essay
According to LeBron James, You can t be afraid to fail. It s the only way to succeed. You re not going
to succeed all the time, and I know that. . LeBron will lead the team to the eastern conference then to
the NBA Finals. The Cleveland Cavaliers will win the 2015 2016 NBA Championship because we
have the best player in the world, we will have all our players back and they have a good bench to
back up the starters.
The Cavaliers, with no doubt, have the best player in the world, LeBron James. He has worked hard
every day to get to the place he is at right now and it shows. He has won the league MVP four out of
five years. He has been selected to his 12th All Star game, which he will be starting the 11th year in a
row. Also, he has won two NBA championships, him being the Finals MVP for both championships.
Not only has he won two NBA championships, he has won two Olympic gold medals for basketball.
Finally, he is the youngest player to score 20,000 points. Even though he is the best player in the
world you still need a team to win a championship. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Cavaliers will win this year s championship. Like one said, the Cavaliers will win because they will

The Pros And Cons Of Forced Marriage
Forced marriage is when one of the two parties involved, this usually being the female, does not
consent to the marriage but are forced into it by their family or community. In Australia, forced
marriage is illegal but this does not seem to stop people from being taken overseas to be married, so
should this practice still continue to be illegal in Australia if it isn t being prevented?
In many cultures and religions, marriage is considered a family matter. Parents believe that it is their
duty to choose who their child will marry, and by not doing so they would be going against tradition
and neglecting this fundamental part of the marriage process (Justice.gc.ca. 2016). By going through
with a forced marriage, the daughter or son who is a part of the marriage is seen to be bringing honor
to his/her family. This could make the daughter/son feel like she/he is helping their family by going
through with the marriage (Rubinstein, 2013).
In forced marriages, a lot of women tend to not have a choice and are often abused by their husbands
after the ceremony is over. Joelle Mazoud is a first generation Australian Lebanese woman who was
forced into marriage at the age of 16. A week after arriving in Lebanon, she met her husband once and
was then married. Joelle was left in Lebanon with her new husband. She suffered 11 miscarriages over
8 years and she was constantly being abused (Angel, 2013). Women should not have to suffer under
such cruel circumstances just to bring honour to her family.
If the young woman or man refuses to go through with the marriage, they are instantly exiled from
their family and they are looked down upon by their community as a disappointment. Amina was set
to be married at the age of 18 to a man she had never met. Amina refused the forced marriage because
she still wanted to study and have a life of her own. As a result, Amina lost all of her relationships
with her family and community and was forced to live on her own and become independent (Vidal,
2016).
In Australia it is illegal to cause a forced marriage or be a third party to a forced marriage. The
Commonwealth Criminal Code Act 1995 contains the offenses of forced marriage which includes
agreeing to a forced marriage of a person who

  • 2. Dan Savage Character Analysis Just by looking at him, you aren t going to know that Dan Savage is a newspaper column writer for The Stranger, that founded It Gets Better, a multimedia organization to inspire and assist LGBTQ+ youth. People need heroes because everyone needs somebody to look up to. Dan is my hero because not only is he standing up for a community, but he doesn t have to do anything about the problems in the community if he doesn t feel like doing it. In my own opinion, Dan Savage holds the characteristic of brave. He shows bravery when he stands up for who and what he believes in and that takes bravery since there will always be people against him and his beliefs in some way or another so he has to be brave enough to stay standing and to continue ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He shows compassion by reaching out and helping LGBTQ+ youth with problems they face like bullying, family rejection, and self harm. I feel that he shows sympathy and/or empathy for the problems the youth of this community are facing, since he is part of the community himself, and may have gone through the same problems. Now, your opinion may be different from mine, and you may not think that Dan could be described as unprejudiced. Although, he has shown the trait of unprejudiced by starting the It Gets Better organization. If he was Prejudiced, the organization most likely never would have started. It may have even been started, but for the complete opposite reason; to go against LGBTQ+ youth, rather than be for them. However, the past statements are not the case, and he started the organization with the intent of helping the individuals that need it. People need heroes because everyone needs somebody to look up to. Dan Savage is my hero on account of him being brave, compassionate, and unprejudiced. Considering all of the above, Dan Savage, newspaper column writer for The Stranger, that started the It Gets Better organization for LGBTQ+ youth, is my hero. Seeing that he holds traits that go towards my definition of the word, Hero; A leader who can stand up and care about what they believe in without other people s judgement clouding around their ... • 3. George Herbert s Metaphysical Poetry Metaphysical poetry comes into being as a kind of rebellion against the precedent of Golden Poetry. Not only is it extremely difficult to define metaphysical poetry, but difficult to decide what poets practise it and in which of their verses (Eliot.) If we try to define the Metaphysical Poetry we can say that it is poetry that moves from the image to the conceit, from the visual to beyond the visual. George Herbert was among a group of poets together with John Donne, Andrew Marvell, Abraham Cowley and more, who were considered metaphysical poets. It is difficult to find any precise use of metaphor, simile, or other conceit, which is common to all the poets and at the same time important enough as an element of style to isolate these poets as a group (Eliot.) It is to be observed that the language of these poets is as a rule simple and pure; in the verse of George Herbert this simplicity is carried as far as it can go a simplicity emulated without success by numerous modern poets. The structure of the sentences, on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We can see that same unorthodox usage of a banal concept such as love in another Metaphisical poet: John Donne. Donne in his poems also uses very unconventional ways to describe love, and also was criticized by Jonson for his unconventional method. Advantages And Disadvantages Of Linocut Linocut A block made of linoleum Carving tools Paper fabrics Linocut is a form of relief printing in which the artist cuts a design into the surface of the block. Then a mirror image is created when the artist places a paper or fabric over the surface and presses down with a hand or a roller. The raised parts of the piece transfer over on to the paper or fabric to create the overall desired print. Linocut has both benefits and drawbacks as a form of printmaking. The major benefit of this form of art is that it is softer than wood making it easier to carve and use. Another benefit is that color can be added to the prints. The artist first coats the metal plate in an acid resistant substance known as ground and is drawn on. The artist then uses a sharp tool or etching needle down to the plate. Hard grounds are employed for finely detailed linear work. Soft ground can also be used, and virtually any tool can be used to expose the plate and resembles crayon and pencil drawings (Sayre, 2012). Whichever ground is used by the artist is then placed in an acid bath. The acid eats, or etches, into the plate where the lines have been drawn; the longer the exposed plate is left in the bath, and the stronger the solution, the greater the width and depth of the etched line (Sayre, 2012). An artist can also create a way in stopping out a section by using varnishes or ground over the etched surface. Once the plate is finished being exposed to acid, it is inked and printed. Etching has both benefits and drawbacks. Some of the benefits to etching are that it is a fluid and free process and it is able to capture the sense of immediacy as a sketch. However, some drawbacks to etching include it is a medium that requires calculations and planning, an ability to manipulate chemicals, and a willingness to risk losing everything in order to achieve the desired effect (Sayre, ... This $1,000,000 donation is noted as an unrestricted donation (Apollo Group, 2006). This unrestricted donation is recorded on the Interim Statement of Income in December 2009 (Apollo Group, 2006). Declines in the stock market and real estate markets resulted in a sharp drop in the return on investment income. This caused PFCH to reassess the value of its investments and, on their auditors advice, to write down those assets (Apollo Group, 2006, p. 3). Another reason the number were so drastically different was because every December Patton Fuller Community Hospital conducts an annual inventory (Apollo Group, 2006). When the hospital conducted its inventory their expenses for their supplies were way underestimated by about a million dollars (Apollo Group, 2006). So this had to be added on as a cost to December s statement. This underestimate of supply expenses made January to November s reports not correct, so December had to report the actual figures (Apollo Group, 2006). Therefore, December looked like it was a crazy month for the hospital. This can be seen in the variety of religions that have sprung up over time and gained large followings. Although they are all unique in their own way, certain aspects connect them and allow one to see how they all, in some way, influence each other. When analyzing the founding and spread of Buddhism, Sikhism, Confucianism, and Hinduism, it is evident that although there are many distinguishing differences between the four religions, there are multiple similarities that link them all with each other. The word Buddhism is derived from the word budhi , to awaken, so it makes sense that the creation of the religion begins with its founder s awakening. It is said that Buddhism started in the 6th century due to the actions of its founder, Siddhartha Gautama, the wealthy warrior son of a king and queen in Lumbini (now Nepal). When Siddhartha was young, a soothsayer predicted that he would become a renouncer and his father showered him in luxuries, hoping to change this prediction. However, as a young man, Siddhartha went on a series of chariot rides in which he witnessed a variety of suffering people and came to the realization that material pleasures, such as his own, only serve to mask human suffering. After entering a period of severe and damaging renunciation and realizing that it only added suffering, Siddhartha meditated under a tree and woke up the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Without books we would lack the knowledge of those in the past, and the ability to see the world from a different perspective. Each book contains information different from the last, but each book is written with a purpose. Each book is written for a reason, and what we are able to obtain from the books that we have been given reflect the person that we are. Without books we would be lost as people, as members within the community, and as a society as a whole we would be searching for something that we can not find. We would be hopeless and censored from the knowledge that is given to us through books. It is hard to imagine what we would know without books, if anything at all. The past would become the present and the future would have no meaning. Fahrenheit 451 displays a deep and thought provoking message to those that read it by showing us what it would be like to live in a society where we are forced to believe one thing, and are never able to form our own opinions. Proving that happiness doesn t come from peace among the people, but rather the ability to to be able to live our life the way that makes you happy. Summary Of A Poem For Black Hearts By Amiri Baraka Shortly after the assassination of Malcolm X in February 1965, dozens of writers and poets published pieces to honor the life and legacy of the Civil Rights mogul. Among the earliest poems dedicated to the fallen hero of the Black community is Amiri Baraka s A Poem for Black Hearts, which became one of the most widely circulated poems of the time period. The poem, which eulogizes Malcolm X, recounts the violent murder that took place in Harlem a horrific, and tragic event that left the Black community traumatized. It is about author s work experience in the crematory, and the awareness and cognition of death. Caitlin mentioned that she works in a crematorium because she wanted to overcome the fear of death. Because when she was eight years old at Windward Mall, she saw a little girl climb up to where the escalator met the second story railing, then she tipped over the edge and fell thirty feet, landing face first on a laminate counter with a sickening thud (Caitlin 29). So, she lost control of death. Maybe people fear of death because they experience some frightening things, no matter in real life or virtual. In addition, Cicirelli said, The meanings of death and life are interdependent. Life gains its meaning from the fact of death. How, when, where, and why one anticipates dying influences the meaning of the life that one has. Such a view implies changing individuals over time, and consequently a life span perspective on development of personal death meanings and related death fears. One would expect the individual to develop different personal meanings and death fears over the course of life from early childhood to adolescence, young adulthood, middle adulthood, and old age ( Cicirelli 715). The Mayans continued the agricultural success of the preceding people by draining swamps and erecting platforms for farming. • 18. Coffee Filter Essay Take a clean paper towel or coffee filter. Moisten it. Place 10 or 20 seeds onto it (10 is better). Fold the seeds. If you use exactly ten seeds, you will find it much better to calculate the percentage of germination after that. Here is why. If 5 out of 10 seeds germinate, then 50% of your seeds will grow during the season. That s pretty risky. So you need more than 70% or else planting will not be worth the effort. Ideally, 8 or 9 out of 10 seeds will sprout. However, if you get less than 70%, you had better not put work into it at all. Buy new seeds for the upcoming planting season. Now, let s get back to the topic. We reached a point where you fold the seeds. Then place them in a sandwich/zipper bag and zip most of the way. Ideally, you will leave some room for the seeds to be able to breath. If you want to test out several different seeds, write down the name of the plant on each bag to avoid errors when identifying the seeds. Store the bag with seeds at room temperature (about 70 degrees Fahrenheit/21 degrees Celsius). Perhaps it is best to place it by a sunny window. Wait seven to ten days. During this time, make sure to keep the paper towel/coffee filter moist. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Unzip the bag and unfold the paper towel. • 19. The Transition Of Energy Systems The energy systems seen in the present day are vastly different from those seen in the past two decades amid the ongoing transition of energy systems. The issue of climate change and the alarmingly high levels of Global Greenhouse Gas (GCG) emissions have meant there has been a transition in energy systems as countries worldwide continuingly proceed into a post carbon world. Developing energy systems of the future is one of the central challenges to policy makers, a challenge which is complex and multifaceted (Miller et al 2013:135) as large scale shifts in the use of fuels and energy technologies have often underpinned broad social and geographical change (Jiusto 2009:537). The aim of this essay is to investigate how the transition ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In areas of the global South energy transition suggests a substantial increase in availability and affordability of energy (Bradshaw 2010), whereas in the Western world energy transition is termed as a movement towards a secure, low carbon future (Bridge et al 2013:333), and targets such as those in the UK of an 80 per cent reduction in CO₂ by 2050 (Foxon et al 2008). There are various reasons as to why the energy transition to a low carbon system and use of renewable sources of energy are contemporary. The first of which is the worryingly high amounts of GCG emissions in the atmosphere, caused by a multitude of things such as population growth, demand for energy supply in conjunction with the inefficient use of energy, which is chiefly satisfied by the use of fossil fuels and also economic and industrial expansion. The need to reduce such emissions is ever important as if carbon dioxide emissions from the use of fossil fuel continue to rise at current levels it will cause the average global temperature to rise by 5°C or more over the next 100 years (IPCC 2007). Another reason is the dwindling supply of fossil fuels available, Roberts (2004) suggesting there is a looming crisis ahead despite it being argued by some global governments that supplies of fossil fuels were ample to meet world ... He is 43 years old, married with four children, and currently resides in the Greater Toronto Area. He was born in Karachi, Pakistan where he lived in an extended family with his parents, brothers sisters, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and their kids. He had moved to Canada on October 26th 1990, by himself, to fulfill his undergraduate degree at the University of Manitoba in Computer Science and Math. He is now working at CGI as a Professional IT Manager. He describes himself as introverted, responsible, independent, hard working, driven, logical and analytical. This is evident throughout his interview, as he had a very analytical approach on observing advertisements. While Atif was growing up back in Pakistan, advertising was a lot less relevant because of where he was, who he was and how he interacted with the media. Firstly, there was only one channel that ran on TV from 5pm until 11pm. Though, only on Sundays, the channel started from early mornings. There were no 24 hour broadcasts. Very select commercials appeared on TV, that too mostly for necessity items. One that he remembers fondly is a commercial for toothpaste. What attracted Atif about this commercial was its catchy jingle. Mclain s Toothpaste! Did you Mclain your teeth today? The kids then would chant back Twice a day, every day! • 21. The Discovery Of Mount Everest Over nine thousand people died and thousands were displaced when an earthquake with a magnitude of 8.1 hit Nepal in April 2015. Consequently, this earthquake triggered the deadliest event in the history of Mount Everest when an avalanche killed 19 people two weeks later (1). This tragedy was caused by two pieces of the planet s crust that have been colliding for millions of years now. Moreover, this collision is based on the scientific theory of plate tectonics that cases the large scale motion of the planet s lithosphere. The same theory also explains how Mount Everest, a part of the Himalayas, was affected. Nepal s seismic nature and the Himalayas are connected through the collision of the Indian Plate and the Eurasian plate. First and foremost, plate tectonic theory deals with the idea that lithospheric plates or tectonic plates move around the crust. Tectonic plates are slabs of the Earth s lithosphere which is a combination of the crust and uppermost mantle. The lithosphere is characterized by its rigid and cooler nature. On the other hand, the asthenosphere is hotter and more viscous and lies beneath the lithosphere. Together, the lithosphere and the asthenosphere makes up the outer layers of the Earth. These two layers are really important because the rigid pieces of the lithosphere ride on the viscosity of the asthenosphere (2). As previously mentioned, the Nepal earthquake was caused collision of these plates and it has numerous underlying factors that started ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 22. The Importance Of Censorship In Hollywood Movies Prior to the current Hollywood rating system, in which the responsibility of determining what the viewer should see is left in the hands of the viewer (with the exception of R rated movies), Hollywood studios used self censorship to control insure what they were showing audiences was appropriate. The way that Hollywood studios were able to do this was through the enforcement of the Movie Picture Production Code (MPPC). The push for regulation of the motion picture industry picked up steam in the 1920 s. The coming of sound allowed for films to be much more realistic and obscene than silent films. In an effort to sell tickets and pique the public interest, movie studios began to make sexualized, profane, and violent movies. The late 20 s birthed stars like Mae West, whose character almost solely on sexual quips and innuendo. In response to these films, Daniel Lord, a Jesuit priest, submitted a production code to the studios, in 1929. Much like the public is concerned currently with the effects that violent video games can have on adolescents and society in general, Lord was particularly concerned with the moral degradation the movies could have on society. Consequently, he created a code that likely only a G rated modern movie would pass now. However, fearing the economic consequences that a catholic boycott or governmental ban would have on Hollywood profits, the Motion Picture Production and Distributors Association of America (MPPDA), which was made up of the biggest ... Gun violence has risen to epidemic proportions. The United States has allowed guns to become so easily accessible that in four out of five states anyone, even someone without a gun license, can buy an unregistered firearm from a private vendor. It has also become incredibly easy to be approved for a gun in most states. Currently it is more difficult to get a driver s license, even with extensive testing, than it is to own a firearm. We, as a nation, cannot expect to progress far if we don t even moderately control the flow of firearms that is flooding into the streets. We have the capacity to fix this and create a safer country for everyone. In order to improve the yearly death tolls from gun violence, we have to limit how one can even get a gun in the first place. Currently, the country only has ten states that prohibit the sale of guns at gun shows and through private vendors, who don t have proper licensing. Another ten states only prohibit handgun sales, and the other thirty states have nothing. This means one can walk into a gun show with cash and walk out the same day with a gun. If we prohibit ... • 28. Automatic Temperature Fan Speed Control INTRODUCTION: This is a standard circuit which can be used to adjust the brightness of mains lights and the speed of AC motors. It uses a triac, diac and has a radio frequency interference (RFI) noise suppression circuit built into it as well. The circuit controls the average power to a load through the triac by phase control. The AC supply is applied to the load for only a controlled fraction of each cycle. The triac is held in an OFF condition for a portion of its cycle then is triggered ON at a time determined by the circuit. Each time the triac is turned on, the load current changes very quickly a few micro seconds from zero to a value determined by the lamp resistance and the value of the mains voltage at that instant in time. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At this instant in time no current is flowing in either direction. This is the point at which a dimmer is electronically synchronized to turn the power ON or OFF. By chopping the waveform at the zero crossing point, smooth dimming can be achieved without the lamp flickering. This turning on and off of the power device occurs every time the mains crossing point is reached (half phase), 100 or 120 times per second. Typically light dimmers are manufactured using a Triac or Thyristor as the power control device. These electronic parts are semiconductors not dissimilar to transistors. A Thyristor is a Uni. directional device and hence, because AC power flows in both directions, two are needed. A triac is a bidirectional device and therefore only one is needed. An electronic circuit determines the point in time at which they turn ON (conduct). The ON state continues until the next zero crossing point, at which point the device turns itself OFF. The electronic circuit then provides a delay, which equates to the dimness of the lamp, before turning the control device back on. The slight capacitance of the load, filters the chopped waveform resulting in a smooth light output. Some controllers use a microprocessor control with the above timing function being handled by an analogue circuit. More sophisticated systems, called digital dimmers, operate the switching direct from microprocessor. This has the advantage of greater reliability, quieter operation, lower cost and smaller ... Provide a quote from each of the two speeches that best represent the use of each of the rhetorical devices. Keep response to a minimum of 1000 words. In the 1960 s, civil rights were becoming a very present and evident concern to the people of America once again. Issues were being brought up to leaders that could and had the authority to actually help out and do something about these said issues. John F. Kennedy was elected in 1961, and the state our country was in was not as great as it could have been. In fact, it was not good at all. Let both sides unite to heed, in all corners of the earth, the command of Isaiah to undo the heavy burdens, and [to] let the oppressed go free. Here in this passage you can see Kennedy using the phrase let both sides, which entails all nations to rise up to the calling for world peace and prosperity. In Martin Luther King Jr. s I Have A Dream speech, King also uses rhetorical strategies to appeal to his audience. We can see pathos in the quote: I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: We hold these truths to be self evident: that all men are created equal. This is appealing to pathos because a dream deals with emotion and feelings that you wish to happen or carry out. Ethos is present in King s speech when he states: We must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline. We must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence. It really says a lot when King can effectively communicate his ideas on peace while maintaining that he is against violence. We can see the logos Martin Luther King Jr. uses when he refers to Lincoln s promise to our country that was left unfulfilled. • 39. Keats Concerned With Money According to Porscha Fermanis, substantial cricticism on Lamia posits that the poem is observed that this poem is concerned with money (Fermanis, 2009, p. 99) and that Keats s own anxiety over money during the composition of Lamia resonates throughout the poem (Kelvin Everest summarized in Fermains 99) but Keats represents his view about money in this way that it relays the large debate about the effects of trade and commerce on the social, economic and political condition of England (Fermanis, 2009, p. 99). Marjorie Levinson, who follows Marxist and Freudian principles of fetishism, commodity exchange and symbolic capital, seems curious to know about the mechanisms due to which love and money, pleasure and power, consumption and production ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lamia focuses on this inability of his. The poet wants to say that things aren t as simple as they appear to be by exposing the selfishness and falseness of Lycius love despite it being a tale of romance; thus creating an ambiguity. Lamia focuses on Lycius s inability to distinguish between his private dreams of pleasure and the social world outside himself. Lycius is characterized as a romantic dreamer, a male lover, who fails to see his lover as an individual other. Lamia is objectified by Lycius as something that serves the purpose of stimulating his imagination and fulfilling his desires only, as he sees her more as a part of his dream than his reality. What seems to lie at the heart of Keats romances, and more specifically in Lamia, is that romantic love is nothing more than a selfish feeling that comes to satisfy personal desires without any regards. How Lycius conceptions of reality are shaped by his romantic perception is exemplified by Keats throughout the poem. Romance and Lycius s romantic love has been linked with egotistical and selfish desires by Keats who associates female respect and idealization more with Lycius s desires for fame and glory than anything else (Schulkins, 2014, p. ... • 42. The Age Of Innocence By Edith Wharton And The Waste Land The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton and The Waste Land by T.S. Eliot has similar recurring imagery. Both literary works portray two women in a way and compare these two women characters. Wharton s portrayal of gender in the society of Old New York illustrates the perfect woman through May Welland along with the imperfect woman through Ellen Olenska, whereas in the poem The Waste Land by T.S. Eliot, the role and sexuality of women is shown through the juxtaposition of two women in the section A Game of Chess. Newland fears that May wont be able to see any of the world even if she opens her eyes. He fears that May will end up like a copy of her mother, who perfectly portrays the role of a wife in society. Newland wants more out of May, not just the perfect housewife. Ellen Olenska portrays the other side of the juxtaposition of women in The Age of Innocence. She is more individualistic than May and her experiences outside of the United States such as her failed marriage in Europe show that Ellen is a woman who is independent. For this reason, Ellen fails to grasp the social code once she enters the society of Old New York. A great example comes at the beginning of the novel when Ellen enters the opera in clothing that is provocative for the event. When Ellen enters the opera in this European style dress that reveals too much shoulder, she shocks Old New York. The suggestion of this headdress, which gave her what was then called a Josephine look, was carried out in the cut of the dark blue velvet gown rather theatrically caught up under her bosom by a girdle with a large old fashioned clasp. In 1999, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) initiated an inquiry into Tyco s practices that resulted in a restatement of the company s earnings. In January, 2002, questionable accounting practices came to light. Tyco had forgiven a $19 million, no interest loan to Kozlowski in 1998 and had paid the CEO s income taxes on the loan. It was found that he company s stock price had been overrated, and that the CEO and CFO had sold 100 million dollars worth of shares, and then stated to the public that he was holding them, which was a misrepresentation and misled the investors. The major conspiracy was uncovered by Manhattan District Attorney, Robert Morgenthau, who was investigating Kozlowski for income tax evasion for some fine art work that he had purchased. As Morgenthau kept digging into the record keeping of Tyco and Kozlowski, it was determined that there were other situations that had occurred, such as a 10 million dollar loan that was totally forgiven by Tyco, and all interest was billed to the corporation. Shakespeare wrote many tragic plays, but Macbeth is by far the bloodiest play written to this day. This becomes evident with Shakespeare s use of blood to portray the advancements of mental disease. Macbeth begins the play as Lord of Glamis, with Lady Macbeth as his lady, and a sincere love for each other, and each other s power. She calms down her husband by telling him, that no one will know what they have done and they will easily be rid of their guilt. She remains calm and level headed even though her husband just committed a murder, which could mean the death of both of them if someone discovers their deed. She believes that the blood on their hands can easily wash away, and there will be no evidence of their part in the murder. Later on in the play, the audience sees that she no longer has a sense of equanimity, but appears frigid and paranoid. The Doctor and Gentlewoman see Lady Macbeth sleepwalking, and she rubs her hands while saying: Out, damned spot! Out, I say! (V.i.30). Lady Macbeth looks like a mad woman, who hallucinates due to the guilt she bares. Shakespeare implies that the stain Lady Macbeth struggles to get off of her hands comes from the blood spilled from murders she helped commit. If earlier a little bit of water could wash away the blood of the kings murder, then evidently the murders are piling up, and the amount of blood on her hands seems uncontrollable, and she can no longer clean up her husband s mess. Tpn Nutrition Case Study t has been pointed out that there is a possibility of deficiencies in trace elements during TPN nutrition control procedures without the addition of trace elements, and, in fact, in several foreign countries have developed TPN solutions containing plural trace elements for the purposes of therapy. However, iron concentrations in the brain, heart, liver, testis, and tibia in group B tended to shower higher values than those of group A, even though they didn t reach the same levels as group D. It was suggested that if the nutrition management was continued for a longer period of time and the trace element solution was used, that there is a possibility that the blood fluid properties and iron deficiency state of the subjects could have been improved. The occurrence of deficiencies during the time of TPN treatments which have been cured by zinc has been reported numerous times, (2, 3) and it is widely accepted that adding zinc to TPN solutions is necessary. When comparing groups A and C, the zinc concentration in group A in plasma and the tibia s of subjects showed a significantly lower value, and it is possible that the TPN treatment made zinc deficiency worse. The level of zinc in group B (the trace element mixed solution group) was almost the same as group D. These doses seemed to be proper for alleviating zinc deficiency. ALP uses zinc as a coenzyme, and it has been reported that when zinc is intraperitoneally administered to zinc deficient rats, ALP levels increase markedly. (11) In this experiment ALP levels were elevated by administration of the trace element mixed solution. This change in ALP levels was consistent with the change in plasma zinc concentration levels. • 49. The Pros And Cons Of Forced Marriage Forced marriage is when one of the two parties involved, this usually being the female, does not consent to the marriage but are forced into it by their family or community. In Australia, forced marriage is illegal but this does not seem to stop people from being taken overseas to be married, so should this practice still continue to be illegal in Australia if it isn t being prevented? In many cultures and religions, marriage is considered a family matter. Parents believe that it is their duty to choose who their child will marry, and by not doing so they would be going against tradition and neglecting this fundamental part of the marriage process (Justice.gc.ca. 2016). By going through with a forced marriage, the daughter or son who is a part of the marriage is seen to be bringing honor to his/her family. This could make the daughter/son feel like she/he is helping their family by going through with the marriage (Rubinstein, 2013). In forced marriages, a lot of women tend to not have a choice and are often abused by their husbands after the ceremony is over. Joelle Mazoud is a first generation Australian Lebanese woman who was forced into marriage at the age of 16. A week after arriving in Lebanon, she met her husband once and was then married. Joelle was left in Lebanon with her new husband. She suffered 11 miscarriages over 8 years and she was constantly being abused (Angel, 2013). Women should not have to suffer under such cruel circumstances just to bring honour to her family. If the young woman or man refuses to go through with the marriage, they are instantly exiled from their family and they are looked down upon by their community as a disappointment. Amina was set to be married at the age of 18 to a man she had never met. Amina refused the forced marriage because she still wanted to study and have a life of her own. As a result, Amina lost all of her relationships with her family and community and was forced to live on her own and become independent (Vidal, 2016).
