Metaphor
Bullets of princes Europe line 23
Here Whitman uses the metaphor of the princes to compare the Americans to children. He often
speaks of the authority as the kings, and in calling the Americans princes, the sons of kings, he is
calling them immature for fight. Whitman is a pacifist and uses this metaphor to support the theme
that the immature can fight, it takes true maturity to settle ones differences because, children are
immature therefore children argue and fight. which is why he compares the adults children, to
emphasize that the civil war is an unnecessary chaos and can be resolved peacefully.

Similarly to trees who are cut down only to be replaced by another the soldiers were constantly being
replaced by another because they were dying rapidly for a war that wasn t going anywhere. This
proves the theme that the immature can fight, it takes true maturity to settle ones differences because,
had the people been mature enough to settle their problems reasonably the soldiers wouldn t be piling
up and they would instead be bearing fruit that would have actually worked to better the nation,
instead of dying to settle an old feud.
Diction/ Tone
People scorned the... Europe line 13
By using the word scorned to describe the Peoples feelings Whitman creates a disappointed tone
toward his fellow americans. Scorning is something that is done to an immature child, it is what a
parent or mature person does when someone acts up, this essentially Whitman doing just that to his
fellow americans who are immaturely fighting. This furthers the theme that the immature can fight, it
takes true maturity to settle ones differences because, by creating this disappointed tone whitman is
showing his distaste towards the civil war, which he believes that can be resolved by mature
negotiations.

Is Facebook Making Us Lonely Stephen Marche
Is Facebook Making Us Lonely? In the article Is Facebook making us lonely? published in May 2012,
Stephen Marche reports that the use of social media has detached people from one another, makes
them lonelier, and makes them encourage solitary living. Marche explains that the high use of social
media has increased the quantity in the intensity of human loneliness which can make the users
miserable, unhappy with their lives, deteriorate their health, decrease their confidant, and eventual
causes untimely death. He states that people now live in an accelerating contradiction: the more
connected they become, the lonelier they are. He reports that Facebook is interfering with our real
friendships, distancing us from each other, making us lonelier; and that social networking might be
spreading the isolation it seemed designed to conquer. In addition, Marche states that the effect of
loneliness has created multiple research and increase professional careers. Facebook and other social
media are interfering with our real ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to Stephen Marche, Ronald Dworkin pointed out in a 2010 paper that the country had 77,
000 clinical psychologists, 192,000 clinical social workers, 400,000 nonclinical social workers, 50,000
marriage and therapists, 105,000 mental health counselors, 220,000 substance abuse counselors,
17,000 nurse psychotherapists, and 30,000 life coaches . The need of professional careers has increase
because of the threat of societal collapses. Loneliness can cause bad health: obesity, depression,
inflammation, loss of memory, bad sleep, less exercise, less survival of operation, dementia and
decline cognitive. Moreover, John Cacioppo illustrates in his book, Loneliness, released in 2008, that
loneliness can also penetrate the deepest recesses of the cell to alter the way genes were being
expressed. It can affect the brain and the basic process of DNA

Identifying The Areas Of Law
1. Identify the areas of law that are relevant to the chosen media report, and explain how they are
relevant to the matters outlined in the report.
The article reports on the suing of Norvic Industries, who built a house to lock up stage on the wrong
block, against the Water Corporation who they claim to have caused the mistake first by connecting
water to the wrong lot.
Corporations Law
Both Norvic Industries and Water Corporations were corporations. Not only the formation but also the
administration and management of such companies involve compliance with the Corporations law.
They are bound to act in certain ways in accordance with the Corporations Act. For instance, in the
case example, the Water Corporation could be investigated for how they managed to act unlawfully by
not honouring their obligation with another party.
Contract Law
Many aspects of the case concerns contract law. The Norvic Industries entered a building contract with
a client (Adrian and Linda Webb) in which they have contractual duties to fulfil in building the house
as discussed and stated in the contract. As a result, the Norvic Industries entered another contract with
the Water Corporation to have water connected to a block on Flag Staff Crescent in Secret Harbour.
The detailed rights and obligations of the agreement between these parties would have been included
in the contract. By entering in such contracts, these parties are protected by the contract law.
In the report, the building

Marya Mannes How Do You Know It s Good
In a world that has become immune to accepting all types of art, Marya Mannes believes we have lost
our standards and ability to identify something as good or bad . In her essay, How Do You Know It s
Good , she discusses society s tendency to accept everything out of fear of wrongly labelling
something as being good or bad. She touches on various criteria to judge art, such as the artist s
purpose, skill and craftsmanship, originality, timelessness, as well as unity within a piece rather than
chaos. She says that an individual must decide if something is good on the basis of instinct,
experience, and association (Mannes). I believe that by using standards and the process of association,
we will be able to judge what makes an art piece good in comparison to others. However, Mannes
forces me to consider the difference between what may be appealing versus what is actually good, and
when deciding which art we should accept, which is truly more important. I believe that good and bad
are two ends of a large, subjective spectrum of grey area. It is possible for a piece of art to be good in
some areas and bad in others, and if something does not live up to all of our standards, it does not
necessarily mean it should be dismissed. Thus, I believe my personal standards for judging art are
based on which my standards are largely based on the personal reaction evoked from a piece of art.
Though I agree with Mannes standards to an extent, I believe that certain standards, such as evoking a
personal response, can be more telling of if a piece of art is good as opposed to its timelessness, or the
level of experience of an artist in his/her craft. As Mannes stated, the process of association is essential
in determining the quality of art, by comparing it to the other art we have seen. I am able to judge the
multitexts I have read in class by using the process of association to compare them to each other. For
example, we are able to judge the quality of the pieces by comparing and contrasting them to each
other. All three of our multitexts used certain writing models such as analogy poems and dialogue.
Cusion s piece Blame , is an analogy poem that he used to build on his multitext, implicitly telling

President Trump s Argument Analysis
Furthermore, it seems like President Trump s infamous use of social media is not the only thing
influencing the country. According to Jessica Mudditt s article, Statute becomes lightning rod for
Australian nationalists, Trump s take on politics has brought hope and motivation into the Australian
nationalist party, the Party For Freedom. This right wing group focuses primarily on the opposition of
immigration and multiculturalism (Mudditt). They also have widely rejected Islam, as the religion
itself has been seen as connection to terrorist attacks as seen with the hostage situation in Sydney back
in 2014. The Party for Freedom has even gone to the extent of adapting President Trump s 2016

Summary And Interaction Of Celebration Of Discipline By...

Professor Wilson, Joy Thompson
Spirit Empowered Living
9 September 16, 2015 Summary and Interaction of Celebration of Discipline by Richard J. Foster
In the beginning of Celebration of Discipline, Richard J. Foster undergoes a thorough explanation of
our ages most desperate need; deep people. He proclaims how our superficiality and lack of common
sense regarding spiritual life has crippled us and left us living in the surface rather than depts. He
mentions how we have gotten accustomed to relying on our own willpower ultimately not containing
the correct attitude or reasons for practicing the classical disciplines. Therefore, we lack the pieces of
our inward and outward life as believers of Christ. Foster ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This brings the second inward discipline, prayer. Prayer is mentioned as one of the most central
disciples due to its intimacy of conversation between us and god himself. Foster describes prayer as
our ability to ask for change in circumstances, to pray is to change (P.33). He explains how Jesus often
withdrew from the crowds to pray to his father. like so, we should withdraw from time to time. Our
disciplines can coincide just as fasting does with prayer; thus being the third discipline prescribed.
Fasting is the abstaining from food for scriptural purpose. (p.48) and is said to be seen as a desperate
measure for emergency. Foster goes deeper into how and why a Christian should fast, but mostly
focuses on its meaning of self control and its centrality being god. Foster s final inward discipline is
the practice of study. Study is the focus to our total transformation from our old selves. It is a specific
experience aimed to form Christian habits. With that, Foster breaks down study into four steps;
repetition, reflection, understanding, and experience which ingrain those habits. In the second part of
the book, Celebration of Discipline, Foster outlines the four outward disciplines. These being;
simplicity, solitude, submission, and service. Simplicity as foster states is an inward reality that results
in an outward life style. (p. 80) which is meant to live out. He says we should be

Phones And Driving
Cell phone use continue to spread like wild fire for many Americans. Cellphones are a part of
everyday life and people depend on them to carry out daily operations and perform numerous task.
Unfortunately, many cell phone operations occur while driving, as a result fatal car accidents take
place daily. Distracted drivers using cell phones has joined alcohol and speeding as a leading factor in
fatal and serious injuries. According to the National Safety Council, cell phone use is involved in more
than a quarter of all vehicle crashes (Newswire, 2017). Parents are no longer at ease as their teens
obtain learners permit and begin driving among millions of distracted drivers on their cell phone. The
situation has heighten over the years to the point of adults being distracted and driving just as careless
as teenagers. It appears like drivers are ignoring the risk taken by using their cell phones while
driving. Major highway changes need to be made as soon as possible by the National Highway Traffic
Safety Administration. The safety of millions of American motorists should be considered more
important than the convenience of using a cell phone and lawmakers should put a bill in place to
completely ban cell phone usage while driving to limit countless accidents on highways. Despite
offering huge benefits, cell phones have become a grave concern and a major cause of road accidents.
Drivers using cell phones are not able to give their complete attention on roads exposing not only

The Denomination For The Jim Crow Laws
The denomination for the Jim Crow Laws first originated in the mid 1800s from a character in a
Minstrel Show. The Minstrel Show was one of the first forms of American regalement ever
engendered and took place in 1843. The exhibition was performed by successors of African American
musical composition and dance routine actors. The first Minstrel Show was in Virginia and
commenced by a group of four men from Virginia who all painted their faces ebony and performed a
minute musical composition and dance skit in a minute theater in Incipient York City. Thomas
Dartmouth Rice, a white actor, performed the Jim Crow Minstrel Show. Rice s inspiration emanated
from an older ebony man whom would sing and dance in Louisville, Kentucky. Rice s skit ended in
the same chorus as the old ebony mans musical composition which went like this Wheel about and
turn about and do jis so, Eb ry time I wheel about I jump Jim Crow. . In 1832 Rice s musical
composition and dance routine took him through Louisville to Cincinnati the through Pittsburgh and
Philadelphia then conclusively to Incipient York City. Determinately, Rice performed throughout
Europe as well as London and Dublin. He had a sizably voluminous following with the Irish
community.

Conflict In The Looking Glass Wars
E.E. Cummings explained It takes courage to grow up and turn out to be who you really are.
Alyss when she was young loved her home in Wonderland but had to grow up in a whole other world.
She would always think her imagination would get the best of her but that fantasy never left as she
grew and became who she really was. In The Looking Glass Wars, Frank Beddor uses conflict to
transform Alyss from a mischievous, endearing, and naive girl to a fond of, praised, and comfortable
young woman so that she can defeat Redd and take back the Heart Queendom.
In the beginning of the novel, Princess Alyss is characterized as mischievous, endearing, and naive.
Alyss loves to play pranks such as dropping jollyjellies from an open window and watching them splat
on the guards below (Beddor 11). Instead of behaving like a proper princess, she prefers getting into
trouble with her best friend, Dodge. However, her pranks are never mean spirited; Alyss just enjoys
having fun. Although Alyss is mischievous, her father finds Alyss to be a delightful creature (Beddor
19). Besides her parents, other adults who even sometimes find themselves as Alyss s targets, such as
Bibwit Harte, also, find Alyss to be endearing. They appreciate her playfulness and are charmed by
her. Since Alyss is so accustomed to people loving her, she barely questions, Where did you come
from? when a kitten randomly appears as a birthday present for her (Beddor 41). Alyss is naïve and

The Resolution Of The Hostages On The Basis Of...
Initially, the President s response was to appeal for the release of the hostages on the basis of
humanitarian grounds, but this was ineffective against the Muslim Student Followers of the Imam s
Line because their main goal was to bring the Shah and the United States to justice, and taking
hostages was just a means to do so. Since there were so many hostages taken, the United States had to
tread carefully with their diplomacy. They were the ones against odds with everything to lose. The
United States should have given an ultimatum earlier on in the hostage crisis, when the motives and
end goals of the Muslim Students were not fully determined (Harris, 54). The hostage crisis also
paved the way for an increase of political power among Muslim extremist groups such as the Irainian
Mujahedin; which would then split into two groups known today as Al Qaeda and ISIS (Cold War
Museum). Many of theses extremist groups saw the hostage crisis as a war to end American
imperialism. The Muslim Students that took hostages decided early on that their quarrel was with
American diplomats, so the militants released thirteen women and African Americans just weeks into
the hostage crisis. And finally, one hostage, Richard Queen, was released during July of 1980 when he
was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Contrary to common belief, the hostages were actually moved
from the embassy to prisons in Tehran by August of 1980 (Baqr, 97). President Jimmy Carter was in

Essay about Shakespeare s Manipulation of History Through...
In some of William Shakespeare s most famous works, he deviates from the historical truth to create
the final product of his works. He does this to please loyalty, as well as appeal to his audience at the
time. At the same time, Shakespeare also does this to help create a stronger bond between the reader
and the characters. To satisfy this, he implements many fictional pieces to his famous works. Macbeth
was one of these works as he wrote this in 1606 to honor James I becoming the king of England. To
please him, he altered many features of characters, as well as add in fictional characters. This changed
the plot of the story greatly, making it very different from the story Shakespeare bases it off of. In
addition, The Tragedy of Julius ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This led to a scene where a long line of Banquo s descendants would rule forever. He wrote this scene
to please James I, giving him the fantasy that all of his descendants would rule until the end of the
world. Another piece that he adds into the story are the Weird Sisters. These figures are meant to
throw Macbeth around, as they try to make him overconfident, so this will alter the way he handles
himself. Shakespeare very well could ve added in these characters to make the story more cohesive, as
the witches warn him Macbeth shall never vanquished be until Great Birnam Wood to high Dunsinane
Hill (Macbeth 127). Following this, towards the end of the play, Macbeth sees an illusion of many
moving trees (men holding branches) moving toward Dunsinane. This makes the play seem more
cohesive, as well as provide humor for the audience. In addition to this, James was also a believer and
a respected authority on witches. In 1599, he even wrote of witchcraft in his book Daemonologie.
Even to this day, this book still rivals in popularity with Shakespeare s other works. Shakespeare also
made changes to Macbeth s character and persona in the story. In the story he bases it off of, Macbeth
is more of a one dimensional character who served for the king of Scotland for ten years. In the real
story, he shows a lot more emotion, as shown through his constant change of feelings from guilt, to
remorse, etc. Shakespeare most likely added this in to

Immigration And Migration During The Vietnam War
Immigration and Migration have greatly impacted Minnesota history from the state s beginning to the
present. The impact of migration from the end of the 1800s to the Vietnam War to today has brought
social, cultural, and political changes that have shaped the state. Within each time period, different
ethnic groups migrated to Minnesota, including: Europeans, Africans, and Asians. People of different
backgrounds moved to the same location, bringing their culture, views and beliefs with them. The
migration periods: the iron range from the end of the 1800s to 1920, after the end of the Vietnam War,
and today contain similarities and differences. There s no doubt that the migration of people has
greatly influenced the present, as will the migration of people today influence the future.
The Age of mass Migration took place in 1880 1924; it was a migration primarily of people from
Southern and Eastern Europe. During the early twentieth century, the population of the Iron Range
was among the most ethnically diverse in Minnesota. Tens of thousands of immigrants arrived from
over thirty places of origin during the early twentieth century to the Iron Range in Minnesota. They

Essay On Cuban Embargo
Embargoes are restrictions on trade between countries used to achieve some kind of goal. The United
States has imposed an embargo on Cuba to encourage the Cuban government to change the way they
run themselves because the United States does not agree with the system of government they have in
place. This embargo enacts total restrictions on trade and travel between the United States and Cuba.
The United States embargo against Cuba should be lifted because it is doing more harm than good to
both countries involved.
To start, embargoes in the United States started with Jefferson s Embargo of 1807 ( The Embargo of
1807 ). Embargoes are put in place by countries in hopes to maintain or restore peace between
countries ( Sanctions, Embargoes and Restrictions ). They can be enacted for a number of different
reasons including moral, political, or environmental objections or concerns (Berkheimer). Embargoes
seek to encourage a country to change the regimes or groups that have allowed the behavior from
which the concerns arise. They do this by way of bans on certain things like travel, arms, or ... Show

Both of these problems created by the embargo leave ordinary citizens to suffer, not their government.
Because of the wholesale ban on trade, American food and related supplies cannot be exported to
Cuba. Many of the Cuban citizens are malnourished which leads to medical problems Cubans do not
have the resources to handle. Malnourishment also means pregnant women cannot receive what their
bodies need during pregnancies, leading to a high infant mortality rate for a developed country. Due to
trade restrictions Cuba cannot get any significant number of water treatment chemicals to purify water
for drinking. This has led to a decrease in the amount of safe drinking water that is available to Cuban
citizens ( Denial of

How Did Greek Culture Influence Western Civilization
Greek society and culture has influenced Western Civilization in architecture. For example, churches
courthouses and even the white house. Many people believe that they are used for a sign of power. In
the current era technology and convenience is harder to believe that a civilization in the greek era was
able to thrive from 1000 b.c. to 323 b.c. Fifth century playwrights Aristophanes and Sophocles
produced comedies and tragedies, respectively. During the early days of theater, masks were used to
represent a variety of emotions and to disguise male actors playing female roles. Only 44 plays from
the ancient Greeks remain today, serving as the foundation of Western theater. Doric is a minimalistic

Greek draftsmen made the initial three and massively impacted the recent two which were composites
as opposed to authentic developments. A request, legitimately talking, is a blending of a certain style
of segment with or without a base and an entablature (what the section upholds: the architrave, frieze,
and cornice). The prior utilization of wooden columns in the end developed into the Doric section in
stone. This was a vertical fluted segment shaft, more slender at its top, with no base and a basic capital
underneath a square math device. The entablature frieze conveyed substituting triglyphs and metopes.
The Ionic request, with causes in mid sixth century BCE Asia Minor, included a base and volute, or
parchment capital, to a slimmer, straighter section. The Ionic entablature frequently conveys a frieze
with lavishly cut model. The Corinthian segment, concocted in Athens in the fifth century BCE, is like
the Ionic yet beaten by a more embellishing capital of adapted acanthus and greenery takes off. These
requests turned into the essential punctuation of western construction modeling and it is hard to stroll

A Child s Role With The Parent And Who Is A Person That...
A father is a person that supports the family and who is there to help the mother take care of children.
A mother is someone who takes care of her children in the best of her ability in the early stages of
their lives, and also later on. A pair of parents responsibilities is to take care of the family, do what is
best for their children, and teach them to walk in the right path. They are not to be selfish on their
decisions to be happy by themselves without their children. The most disturbing subject these days is;
Divorce caused by irresponsible parents and accusation through the custody and alimony process.
People are smarter these days, and end their marriage before it gets long enough to pay alimony, child
support for their stepchildren, or pregnancy of their current spouse. With the starting of one bad
parenting, there are fathers that try to accuse the mothers of adultery, which leads to refusing of the
children; all to just avoid child support. They are awfully good at lying and accusing at court and to
any witness they can make to write false claimed letter to the court. There is something called Joint
Custody which gives two parents the right to receive their children s welfare and not paying child
support. The poor children are constantly on a visitation schedule, and have no freedom to decide what
would be best for them. One mediator gets the judge to decide everything for all types of families.
Irresponsible parents do anything to get what they want. If they

Reasons For Gun Control
Gun control is one of the most important issues debated worldwide, but most importantly in the
United States. According to the Second Amendment in the Constitution, the citizens have the right to
bear arms, yet this has become an issue that has remained debatable for decades in congress meetings.
A recent event that dealt with gun control regulation is the Sandy Hook Shooting where the tragic
massacre in Newton, Conn. killed twenty children and eight adults including himself. I argue this
event, because it gave me prove for the need for more gun control.
I m for gun control, and the main reason weapon control should be in existence is, because on account
of without law saying something else, a firearm can be in anybody s hands. On the off ... Show more

In addition, it is dangerous for just anyone to have a gun, it is moreover loaded with risk for everyone
(arranged or not) to walk around, equipped, at all conditions. There have been serious incidents where
firearms were unexpectedly terminated, yet at the same time brought on a major issue when they did.
In a current review they have found that, instead of being utilized for self protection, firearms in the
house are 22 times more prone to be required in incidental shootings, manslaughters, or suicide
endeavors. The best claim that people who are unfriendly to gun control have is that it is taking
without end their rights to remain fight prepared as a part of the second change. (against gun control.)
A mistake that was made when the Second Amendment was made is that they gave people the right to
buy a gun without a single background check.
Taking everything into account, weapon control is vital for an ensured put for all. Without firearm
control, a weapon can get in the wrong hands. Also without foundation and medical checks, somebody
with mental issues can get a weapon. In general, having it too were for the most part anybody can get

Learning To Die In The Anthropocene Book Summary
Title Goes Here. Learning to Die in the Anthropocene by Roy Scranton helps humanity learn to
survive in the carbon emission created world know as the Anthropocene. Helpful can be defined as
offering assistance, which this book does by spreading awareness about global warming, helping the
reader learn how to die in the Anthropocene and warning of the lack of action. Learning to Die in the
Anthropocene is a helpful book. This book is helpful because it assists in spreading awareness about
global warming. Scranton takes a scientific approach to global warming, presenting what will happen,
and why, we as the human species, are unlikely to solve it. Scranton writes, climatologists now predict

. . A future of 5 to 9 degrees Fahrenheit warmer will mean the arctic ocean will be ice free in the
summer . . . warming of 5 to 9 degrees Fahrenheit will eventually lead to sea levels 90 to 200 feet
higher. (35 36) Scranton helps the reader understand how drastic a change of seven degrees in global
temperature is by explaining how seven degrees colder has affected the planet and how seven degrees
warmer will affect the planet. The book is also helpful because it assists with spreading awareness that
we are unlikely to solve global warming using todays methods thus preventing us from wasting more
time on it. Renewable energy sources, and Carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) are common
propositions as solutions. However, they have their own problems. Renewable energy sources have
problems that revolve around how they are not cheap or reliable. Scranton writes, Many critics
question whether renewable energy will ever be a feasible alternative to carbon fuels, pointing out that
its cost to energy ratios are simply too high (46). Renewable energy sources are expensive to set up
and maintain and their energy is not efficient or reliable enough for widespread use. CCS shares the
problem of cost with renewable energy along with being underdeveloped. Scranton writes, CCS is a
new and expensive technology that stands little chance of being developed on a global scale quickly
enough for it to make a real difference (50). Scranton helps the reader understand, in practice, CCS is
unlikely to solve global warming because it is too expensive to develop on a scale that might make a
difference. This book is helpful because it spreads awareness of what global warming can cause and
why we are unlikely to solve it. However, Scranton does provide the reader with a

Mccandless, Mccandless And Thoreau
Similar to Thoreau, McCandless does not associate being in solitude to being lonesome. Throughout
his journey, McCandless avoids forming close bonds with others because it distracts him from his
final goal of independence and transcendentalism. This lack of intimate relationships frees
McCandless as seen through the journal entry he wrote before walking into the Alaskan Bush. He
writes proudly that for two years he has roamed with no company and no comforts. He calls it,
Ultimate freedom (Krakauer 163). The fact that he considers it more of a freedom than a loss to live in
solidarity shows that like Thoreau, McCandless does not feel lonely when he is alone. According to
his sister, Carine, even when he was younger, he was fine with being alone. She said that although he
had friends, he could easily entertain himself and never seemed lonely when he was alone. Another
instance in which McCandless s dissociation of solitude and loneliness shows is in a letter he writes to
Ron Franz, a man he met near Salton City. In this letter, he tells Franz to step outside his comfort zone
and live a more adventurous life. Towards the end of the letter, he states, You are wrong if you think
Joy emanates only or principally from human relationships, (Krakauer 57). This approach is how he is
not lonely in solitude; he is capable of finding joy in things other than human contact.
Thoreau lived as a minimalist to strip away the distractions of life. He wanted to live in the woods,

Relationships In The Movie Juno
Jason Reitman s 2007 motion picture, Juno follows 16 year old Juno McGruff, through the trials and
tribulations of teen pregnancy and the exploration of choices and decisions she makes after a one time

in finding what she believes to be the ideal adoptive parents for her unborn child. What Juno finds is
Vanessa and Mark Loring s advertisement in the Penny Saver newspaper and to Juno they appear to be
the perfect couple and model parents. Throughout the movie, the audience comes to realize that what
appears to be a perfect couple is essentially incorrect as Vanessa and Mark is a couple who have the

The relationship between potential adoptive parents, Vanessa and Mark, appears to be noticeably
complex. Mark and Vanessa from all appearances have wanted a baby for a long time, as they are
unable to conceive on their own. At first glimpse, Mark and Vanessa seem to be very close with the
couple appearing to dress alike, yet one gets a sense that Vanessa is insecure and anxious while Mark

Richard III Soliloquy Analysis
Ellie Malchione ENGL 201 TA: Craig Eklund 19 October 2014 TITLE TK INTRODUCTION [300]
Thesis: PART I [300+400] Both plays begin with meta theatrical aspects that make the audience
acutely aware that it is watching a performance. In Richard III, these theatrical aspects come across in
the opening soliloquy by King Richard. In this soliloquy, Richard functions like a Chorus by neatly
framing the action to come. He sets the scene of the play by describing that the civil war has ended
and that peace has been restored under King Edward IV. But he also sets the tone and hints at what is
to come: Plots have I laid, inductions dangerous, By drunken prophecies, libels, and dreams, To set
my brother Clarence and the king In deadly hate the one against the other. (1.1.32 35) Much like a

This direct address effectively reminds the audience of its relationship with the players on the stage:
they are not anonymous observers of an unfolding history but rather TK. As the Chorus continues its
preemptive apology, it degrades the performance to come by calling the actors flat unraised spirits and
the stage an unworthy scaffold. These degradations, furthermore, are part of a periodic sentence that
ends by calling the subject of the play so great an object. By delaying the object of the sentence in this
way, the Chorus heightens the grandeur of it, further emphasizing the difference/inferiority TK. The
apology serves to remind the audience of nature: performance is an attempt to replay history but one
that inevitably falls very short ... Having acknowledged the performance s shortcomings, the Chorus
then emphasizes the fact that the play is a performance that requires the audience s mental cooperation
in order to succeed. The Chorus calls upon the audience

Character Analysis Of Stanley YelnatsHoles By Louis Sachar
Stanley Yelnats, the main character in the novel Holes by Louis Sachar was published in 1998.This
was among a number of children s books Sachar had written. Stanley changed in many ways while he
was away at Camp Green Lake. Stanley was sent to Camp Green Lake after being wrongly accused of
stealing a pair of sneakers. He had a big journey ahead of him that he didn t know was coming. Camp
Green Lake was 8 hours away by bus from where his family lived. It was isolated and hot there. It was
also very dry. Stanley changed during his time at Camp Green Lake, physically, emotionally and
mentally. Stanley was a stable, kind and caring teenager, but he unfortunately was bullied by lots of
people for his size. Camp Green Lake gave Stanley confidence and strength to make decisions for
himself and to not accept what everyone was saying as truth.
The most noticeable changes to Stanley were the physical changes. Before Stanley arrived at Camp
Green Lake, Stanley was overweight and was bullied constantly for it. His teacher, Mrs Bell, was once
talking about ratios and had compared his weight to another boy s weight who was much smaller. She
had written on the board the ratio 3:1, stating that Stanley had weighed three times more than the other
boy (Louis Sachar pg 7). The teacher hadn t realised how much she had hurt both of the boys feelings.
At Camp Green Lake Stanley had to dig holes every day and this made him physically strong as he
lost a couple of pounds in sweat the first day.

Elizabethan Poetry
Elizabethan Poetry I
Drama dominates our syllabus but the Renaissance was a Golden Age not just for English drama, but
also for English poetry. But what was English poetry?
George Puttenham s The Arte of English Poesie (1589) and Sir Philip Sidney s The Defense of Poesie
(1595): early attempts to think about English poetry as a distinct national tradition. Puttenham and
Sidney were concerned to build a canon and help shape English poetry into a tradition capable of
rivalling more prestigious literatures (for example of Italy and France).
The courtly lyric/ Petrarchan love sonnet introduced to English by Sir Thomas Wyatt and Henry
Howard, Earl of Surrey: not the only poetic genre in the Renaissance, but one of the most interesting,
... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
How do we understand the pain and frustration expressed in this poetry? How can we make sense of
this form and its popularity? Three points/suggestions:
1. Renaissance writers and critics generally did not value poetry in terms of its genuineness or
sincerity. The idea that poetry should be genuine or sincere is a much more recent conception, which
goes back to the Romantic period.
2. Writing Petrarchan poetry was part of a cultural performance, a way of demonstrating wit, grace
and mastery i.e. sprezzatura . Consider the extreme competitiveness of the Elizabethan courtly milieu.
3. Petrarchan conventions also function as a code for other, non erotic problems and experiences.
Wyatt, Surrey and Sidney belonged to England s most illustrious families and were all extremely
proud and ambitious men, but they didn t always get the treatment they thought they deserved. The
use of Petrarchan conventions to vent frustrated ambition became especially widespread after 1558,
when there was a woman on the throne.
Finally a few words about Sir Philip Sidney (1554 86), the Elizabethan courtier, diplomat, politician,
soldier, scholar, lover, patron and poet (QEI: the most accomplished gentleman in Europe ). Dying at
32 in the Netherlands fighting for Elizabeth s army in the war against Catholic Spain, Sidney was
turned into a quasi mythical figure, supposedly embodying all truly English gentlemanly virtues.

during the merger to avoid this tyoe of exposure from their new acquisition. The exposure could been
avoided if Delta had done a comprehensive analysis of the risk that this new system posed to the

The Era Of The Republic Essay
In the last decades of the Republic, the struggles between competing warlords with dynastic ambitions
spurred related changes in visual culture. One of the new institutions of this changed world was the
household of Gaius Octavianus, better known by his title of Augustus, and its supremacy. This resulted
in the promulgation of the notion that it was both an exemplum to be admired and imitated,
synonymous with the Roman state itself. In The Power of Images in the Age of Augustus, Paul Zanker
examines the role of images in the cultural program of Augustus, arguing that a new visual language
developed to express the ideals of the monarchy and to bolster the social changes desired by the new
government. For instance, in 35 BCE, public statues of living women, honorific portraits of Augustus
wife, Livia Drusilla, the first empress of Rome and his sister, Octavia, were initiated by Augustus and
dedicated by a senatus consultum. Sadly, these portraits are only known from Cassius Dio and their
original location of display in Rome is unknown. However, the very fact that the Senate had to
authorise such portraits by a special decree, suggests the unique nature of such public honours to
women.
Cassius Dio records that these women were correspondingly given both freedom from tutela and
sacrosanctity, an honour traditionally bequeathed to tribunes, which protected the women from
physical harm and verbal insult. Flory argues that while Octavia needed this sacrosanctity due to the

  • 2. Walt Whitman Rhetorical Analysis Essay Device Quote Explanation Metaphor Bullets of princes Europe line 23 Here Whitman uses the metaphor of the princes to compare the Americans to children. He often speaks of the authority as the kings, and in calling the Americans princes, the sons of kings, he is calling them immature for fight. Whitman is a pacifist and uses this metaphor to support the theme that the immature can fight, it takes true maturity to settle ones differences because, children are immature therefore children argue and fight. which is why he compares the adults children, to emphasize that the civil war is an unnecessary chaos and can be resolved peacefully. Similarly to trees who are cut down only to be replaced by another the soldiers were constantly being replaced by another because they were dying rapidly for a war that wasn t going anywhere. This proves the theme that the immature can fight, it takes true maturity to settle ones differences because, had the people been mature enough to settle their problems reasonably the soldiers wouldn t be piling up and they would instead be bearing fruit that would have actually worked to better the nation, instead of dying to settle an old feud. In the article Is Facebook making us lonely? published in May 2012, Stephen Marche reports that the use of social media has detached people from one another, makes them lonelier, and makes them encourage solitary living. Marche explains that the high use of social media has increased the quantity in the intensity of human loneliness which can make the users miserable, unhappy with their lives, deteriorate their health, decrease their confidant, and eventual causes untimely death. He states that people now live in an accelerating contradiction: the more connected they become, the lonelier they are. He reports that Facebook is interfering with our real friendships, distancing us from each other, making us lonelier; and that social networking might be spreading the isolation it seemed designed to conquer. In addition, Marche states that the effect of loneliness has created multiple research and increase professional careers. Facebook and other social media are interfering with our real ... The article reports on the suing of Norvic Industries, who built a house to lock up stage on the wrong block, against the Water Corporation who they claim to have caused the mistake first by connecting water to the wrong lot. Corporations Law Both Norvic Industries and Water Corporations were corporations. Not only the formation but also the administration and management of such companies involve compliance with the Corporations law. They are bound to act in certain ways in accordance with the Corporations Act. For instance, in the case example, the Water Corporation could be investigated for how they managed to act unlawfully by not honouring their obligation with another party. Contract Law Many aspects of the case concerns contract law. The Norvic Industries entered a building contract with a client (Adrian and Linda Webb) in which they have contractual duties to fulfil in building the house as discussed and stated in the contract. As a result, the Norvic Industries entered another contract with the Water Corporation to have water connected to a block on Flag Staff Crescent in Secret Harbour. • 5. Marya Mannes How Do You Know It s Good In a world that has become immune to accepting all types of art, Marya Mannes believes we have lost our standards and ability to identify something as good or bad . In her essay, How Do You Know It s Good , she discusses society s tendency to accept everything out of fear of wrongly labelling something as being good or bad. She touches on various criteria to judge art, such as the artist s purpose, skill and craftsmanship, originality, timelessness, as well as unity within a piece rather than chaos. She says that an individual must decide if something is good on the basis of instinct, experience, and association (Mannes). I believe that by using standards and the process of association, we will be able to judge what makes an art piece good in comparison to others. However, Mannes forces me to consider the difference between what may be appealing versus what is actually good, and when deciding which art we should accept, which is truly more important. I believe that good and bad are two ends of a large, subjective spectrum of grey area. It is possible for a piece of art to be good in some areas and bad in others, and if something does not live up to all of our standards, it does not necessarily mean it should be dismissed. Thus, I believe my personal standards for judging art are based on which my standards are largely based on the personal reaction evoked from a piece of art. Though I agree with Mannes standards to an extent, I believe that certain standards, such as evoking a personal response, can be more telling of if a piece of art is good as opposed to its timelessness, or the level of experience of an artist in his/her craft. As Mannes stated, the process of association is essential in determining the quality of art, by comparing it to the other art we have seen. I am able to judge the multitexts I have read in class by using the process of association to compare them to each other. For example, we are able to judge the quality of the pieces by comparing and contrasting them to each other. All three of our multitexts used certain writing models such as analogy poems and dialogue. Prayer is mentioned as one of the most central disciples due to its intimacy of conversation between us and god himself. Foster describes prayer as our ability to ask for change in circumstances, to pray is to change (P.33). He explains how Jesus often withdrew from the crowds to pray to his father. like so, we should withdraw from time to time. Our disciplines can coincide just as fasting does with prayer; thus being the third discipline prescribed. Fasting is the abstaining from food for scriptural purpose. (p.48) and is said to be seen as a desperate measure for emergency. Foster goes deeper into how and why a Christian should fast, but mostly focuses on its meaning of self control and its centrality being god. Foster s final inward discipline is the practice of study. Study is the focus to our total transformation from our old selves. It is a specific experience aimed to form Christian habits. With that, Foster breaks down study into four steps; repetition, reflection, understanding, and experience which ingrain those habits. In some of William Shakespeare s most famous works, he deviates from the historical truth to create the final product of his works. He does this to please loyalty, as well as appeal to his audience at the time. At the same time, Shakespeare also does this to help create a stronger bond between the reader and the characters. To satisfy this, he implements many fictional pieces to his famous works. Macbeth was one of these works as he wrote this in 1606 to honor James I becoming the king of England. A pair of parents responsibilities is to take care of the family, do what is best for their children, and teach them to walk in the right path. They are not to be selfish on their decisions to be happy by themselves without their children. People are smarter these days, and end their marriage before it gets long enough to pay alimony, child support for their stepchildren, or pregnancy of their current spouse. With the starting of one bad parenting, there are fathers that try to accuse the mothers of adultery, which leads to refusing of the children; all to just avoid child support. They are awfully good at lying and accusing at court and to any witness they can make to write false claimed letter to the court. There is something called Joint Custody which gives two parents the right to receive their children s welfare and not paying child support. According to the Second Amendment in the Constitution, the citizens have the right to bear arms, yet this has become an issue that has remained debatable for decades in congress meetings. The book is also helpful because it assists with spreading awareness that we are unlikely to solve global warming using todays methods thus preventing us from wasting more time on it. Renewable energy sources, and Carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) are common propositions as solutions. However, they have their own problems. Renewable energy sources have problems that revolve around how they are not cheap or reliable. Scranton writes, Many critics question whether renewable energy will ever be a feasible alternative to carbon fuels, pointing out that its cost to energy ratios are simply too high (46). Renewable energy sources are expensive to set up and maintain and their energy is not efficient or reliable enough for widespread use. CCS shares the problem of cost with renewable energy along with being underdeveloped. Scranton writes, CCS is a new and expensive technology that stands little chance of being developed on a global scale quickly enough for it to make a real difference (50). Scranton helps the reader understand, in practice, CCS is unlikely to solve global warming because it is too expensive to develop on a scale that might make a difference. • 29. Mccandless, Mccandless And Thoreau Similar to Thoreau, McCandless does not associate being in solitude to being lonesome. Throughout his journey, McCandless avoids forming close bonds with others because it distracts him from his final goal of independence and transcendentalism. This lack of intimate relationships frees McCandless as seen through the journal entry he wrote before walking into the Alaskan Bush. He writes proudly that for two years he has roamed with no company and no comforts. He calls it, Ultimate freedom (Krakauer 163). The fact that he considers it more of a freedom than a loss to live in solidarity shows that like Thoreau, McCandless does not feel lonely when he is alone. According to his sister, Carine, even when he was younger, he was fine with being alone. She said that although he had friends, he could easily entertain himself and never seemed lonely when he was alone. Another instance in which McCandless s dissociation of solitude and loneliness shows is in a letter he writes to Ron Franz, a man he met near Salton City. In this letter, he tells Franz to step outside his comfort zone and live a more adventurous life. Towards the end of the letter, he states, You are wrong if you think Joy emanates only or principally from human relationships, (Krakauer 57). This approach is how he is not lonely in solitude; he is capable of finding joy in things other than human contact. Thoreau lived as a minimalist to strip away the distractions of life. Richard III Soliloquy Analysis Ellie Malchione ENGL 201 TA: Craig Eklund 19 October 2014 TITLE TK INTRODUCTION [300] Thesis: PART I [300+400] Both plays begin with meta theatrical aspects that make the audience acutely aware that it is watching a performance. In Richard III, these theatrical aspects come across in the opening soliloquy by King Richard. In this soliloquy, Richard functions like a Chorus by neatly framing the action to come. He sets the scene of the play by describing that the civil war has ended and that peace has been restored under King Edward IV. But he also sets the tone and hints at what is to come: Plots have I laid, inductions dangerous, By drunken prophecies, libels, and dreams, To set my brother Clarence and the king In deadly hate the one against the other. These degradations, furthermore, are part of a periodic sentence that ends by calling the subject of the play so great an object. By delaying the object of the sentence in this way, the Chorus heightens the grandeur of it, further emphasizing the difference/inferiority TK. The apology serves to remind the audience of nature: performance is an attempt to replay history but one that inevitably falls very short ... Having acknowledged the performance s shortcomings, the Chorus then emphasizes the fact that the play is a performance that requires the audience s mental cooperation in order to succeed. Character Analysis Of Stanley YelnatsHoles By Louis Sachar Stanley Yelnats, the main character in the novel Holes by Louis Sachar was published in 1998.This was among a number of children s books Sachar had written. Stanley changed in many ways while he was away at Camp Green Lake. Stanley was sent to Camp Green Lake after being wrongly accused of stealing a pair of sneakers. He had a big journey ahead of him that he didn t know was coming. Camp Green Lake was 8 hours away by bus from where his family lived. It was isolated and hot there. It was also very dry. Stanley changed during his time at Camp Green Lake, physically, emotionally and mentally. Stanley was a stable, kind and caring teenager, but he unfortunately was bullied by lots of people for his size. Camp Green Lake gave Stanley confidence and strength to make decisions for himself and to not accept what everyone was saying as truth. The most noticeable changes to Stanley were the physical changes. Before Stanley arrived at Camp Green Lake, Stanley was overweight and was bullied constantly for it. His teacher, Mrs Bell, was once talking about ratios and had compared his weight to another boy s weight who was much smaller. She had written on the board the ratio 3:1, stating that Stanley had weighed three times more than the other boy (Louis Sachar pg 7). George Puttenham s The Arte of English Poesie (1589) and Sir Philip Sidney s The Defense of Poesie (1595): early attempts to think about English poetry as a distinct national tradition. Puttenham and Sidney were concerned to build a canon and help shape English poetry into a tradition capable of rivalling more prestigious literatures (for example of Italy and France). Renaissance writers and critics generally did not value poetry in terms of its genuineness or sincerity. The idea that poetry should be genuine or sincere is a much more recent conception, which goes back to the Romantic period. 2. Writing Petrarchan poetry was part of a cultural performance, a way of demonstrating wit, grace and mastery i.e. sprezzatura . Consider the extreme competitiveness of the Elizabethan courtly milieu. 3. Petrarchan conventions also function as a code for other, non erotic problems and experiences. Wyatt, Surrey and Sidney belonged to England s most illustrious families and were all extremely proud and ambitious men, but they didn t always get the treatment they thought they deserved. The use of Petrarchan conventions to vent frustrated ambition became especially widespread after 1558, when there was a woman on the throne. • 38. The Era Of The Republic Essay In the last decades of the Republic, the struggles between competing warlords with dynastic ambitions spurred related changes in visual culture. One of the new institutions of this changed world was the household of Gaius Octavianus, better known by his title of Augustus, and its supremacy. This resulted in the promulgation of the notion that it was both an exemplum to be admired and imitated, synonymous with the Roman state itself. In The Power of Images in the Age of Augustus, Paul Zanker examines the role of images in the cultural program of Augustus, arguing that a new visual language developed to express the ideals of the monarchy and to bolster the social changes desired by the new government. For instance, in 35 BCE, public statues of living women, honorific portraits of Augustus wife, Livia Drusilla, the first empress of Rome and his sister, Octavia, were initiated by Augustus and dedicated by a senatus consultum. Sadly, these portraits are only known from Cassius Dio and their original location of display in Rome is unknown. However, the very fact that the Senate had to authorise such portraits by a special decree, suggests the unique nature of such public honours to women. Cassius Dio records that these women were correspondingly given both freedom from tutela and sacrosanctity, an honour traditionally bequeathed to tribunes, which protected the women from physical harm and verbal insult. Flory argues that while Octavia needed this sacrosanctity due to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Quine in his paper titled On What There Is (Kim, Sosa, Korman, 2012, p. 7 15) aims to provide an account of two different ontologies and suggests that his answer is the better answer to the ontological problem. Ontology deals with the question of what there is. The problem is understanding what the right answer is. In this response, I will explain Quine s criterion of ontological commitment and his response to McX s argument for the existence of universals. McX is a fictitious philosopher created for taking a position on an ontology different from his own. Simply put, Quine s criterion for ontological commitment is that statements must use bound variables because names are not enough to commit us to an ontology. That is to say, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Quine would disagree and respond that skies, cars, and t shirts discuss particular objects and blue things are predicates of those objects. Quine avoids confronting the argument about the existence of universals by disregarding McX s argument. 2. In order to explain and evaluate the view that a concrete particular is a combination of its features and a substratum. We must first define what these terms mean. A concrete particular is a spatiotemporal individual entity that has causal powers. To put this another way, concrete particulars exist within space and time with one location. A specific concrete particular cannot exist in more than one location at a time. For example, a concrete particular could be a book. The view that these particulars are combinations of is features and substratum is a way to quantify how they exist. Features are the characteristics a substance has. For example, a book has a feature of rectangularity. A substratum or a box theory of concrete particulars suggest that concrete particulars are a combination of its features and contained by their location.
