Global Warming Historical Perspective
A Historical Perspective of Global Warming
Global warming is a problem that has just recently come to the forefront of world affairs. Within the
last fifteen to twenty years, we have known that this problem was not only possible, but likely; but
nothing has really gotten done. The origin of global warming is often disputed, and is being debated
all over the world today. Whatever the cause may be, historians believe this is a problem at least 100
years in the making. Since the Industrial Revolution, we have been on a fast track to pollute Earth to a
way of life altering extent. We are only beginning to see the results of that today. Most scientists base
their research on proxy data; ancient sources such as carvings, and ... Show more content on

Experts are able to make this claim because, the record of the last thousand years seems to have
included a notably wide range of climactic regimes. (Lamb, 301) There is no hard statistical data
pertaining to the Earth s temperature s over the last thousand years, but based on the history that we
have, the high middle ages saw a persistently warm climate epoch, which lasted until about 1310. The
following centuries brought a series of changes, some of them abrupt, leading to the so called Little
Ice Age between 1550 1700 or later. (Lamb 301) Lamb, along with many other experts, take this as
hard evidence that temperature change is normal and natural, and there is no reason for us to think
today s case is any different.
As hot of a topic that global warming is today, not too long ago it was completely disregarded as
anything we needed to pay attention to. It was found that, Around 1880 1890 it was apparent that the
climactic averages of that time were very similar to those of a century earlier, and it became
conventional to treat climate as essentially a constant. Accordingly, study of the development and
possible changes of climate were given a very low priority or more generally neglected altogether.
(Lamb, 292) The consistency within the pre industrial revolution weather patterns provides clarity as
to why this problem hadn t been addressed much in modern times, or even given a second thought.
Lamb provides us with a good

Hinduism Compare And Contrast Buddhism And Jainism
Buddhism and Hinduism are different from Jainism in concept of the soul, worship, sacred places and
their understanding of human beings and the society around them. Buddhism and Hinduism accept the
karma philosophy but each religion has its own description of karma. Jainism s teachings on karma are
that of some particles that we accumulate as we act and think. Jainism also lays major emphasis on the
teaching of Ahimsa which is the principle of nonviolence. Buddhism concept of karma is that of a
sequence of spiritual cause and effect and that our virtuous and non virtuous actions shape our
experience moment by moment. Buddhism also has different teaching about rebirth as compared to
Hinduism as there is no eternal, independently existing soul

The Arab League s Purpose
The Arab League s Purpose is to strengthen the relations between member states, coordinate policies,
and be a safeguard to independence sovereignty. The organization also has to purpose to serve as an
actor to close co operation between member states on certain issues that may arise. The following
matters that the Arab League oversees are any economic or financial affair; this includes commercial
and customer relations and currency. They also have the power to be an actor in the co operation of
communications between membered states. Communications contain railroad, roads and navigation
matters. The extraction of criminals and issues with nationality or passport also fall under the acting
power of the Arab League. If any of these matters lead to disagreements with membered states of the
League, and it results in aggression or the threat of aggression, the threatened state may demand
convocation of the council. This is how the Arab League serves as a forum. The task of the council is
to decide what means are necessary to guarantee peace security, and to regulate co operations in social
economic relations. Each member has a single for in the forum, regardless of the number of
representatives. If a state is threatening another state, and can lead to war, the threatening state does
not get a vote when the council mediates the differences. If a decision is unanimous between all the
voting members, the decision of the council will be binding to all membered states. If

Flexible Discriminant Analysis
The furcula is the main element of avian flight; it is an important origin for flight muscles used in the
down stroke. Many biomechanical functions have been suggested for the Furcular. Originally it was
thought to play a motionless function, acting as a spacer and muscle for flight. Other studies showed a
more active role, where the furcular experience distortions during the wingbeat cycle, where it spread
laterally on the down stroke and rebounding during the upstroke, almost acting like a spring. This
behavior might represent an energy saving adaptation to help with respiration. Past studies have found
that found that subaqueous fliers have more of a V shaped furcular with a high anteroposterior
curvature, whereas soaring bird are more U shaped with low anteroposterior curvature. This study
seeks to clarify this form function relationship through the use of eigenshape morphometric analysis
along with phylogenetic comparative methods (PCMs), and phylogenetic Flexible Discriminant
Analysis (pFDA). Examination of flight modes revealed that intermittent bounders are associated with
narrow interclavicular angles and straight clavicular rami. Short range fliers have a small
anteroposterior curvature where larger ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Past studies showed the strength of the form and function relationship in the avian furcula, while this
study examined the form and function in more modern Mesozoic birds. This study revealed that

confirmed that soaring birds have a more U shaped furcula than continuously flapping birds. It also
observed that the interclavicular angle is an even more important aspect of flight mode than the
curvature, and is positively correlated with body size. This study demonstrates that the Mesozoic taxa
have evolved unique flight modes through different musculoskeletal

Accounting as a Professional School Essay
Accounting professionals are in very high demand. The nature of work in accounting is so vast an
individual would have so many different areas of accounting to choose from. Accounting requires
people who can work with complex business structures, computer systems, and financial analysis
packages. Accounting work further requires an aptitude for mathematics and the ability to compare
and analyze accounting data quickly. Accountants also need to have strong communication skills as
they must effectively communicate accounting data to their employers and/or clients. The accounting
profession also demands a high level of integrity and morality because the financial data prepared by
accountants is used by business managers to run their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Following the undergraduate degree, an accounting student would choose an exclusive area to
specialize in and work towards a completion of an additional year in university to finalize the 150
credit hours required in accounting to be eligible to sit for the Certified Public Accounting board
exam. The 150 credit hours are needed to obtain the required body of knowledge and to develop the
skills and abilities needed to be a successful CPA. After the theory portion of the educational
experience is completed, the most important aspect becomes practical experience. Practical experience
is what drives the market. The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants requires that either a
one tier or two tier systems is required to obtain the CPA designation. This requires that relevant work
experience is needed to become certified. This hands on experience helps to position a potential
certified public accountant for a long and successful career. This professional curriculum is very
detailed and requires a lot of individual steps entailed to reach the point of designation. If it were made
into a professional school these segregated steps combined together would not only help to make
things simpler, but it would allow the accounting profession to be similar to the curriculums of
medicine, pharmacy and law. With an undergraduate degree, graduate theory and practice for four

Terrigal-Coastal Management
Part 1 The geographical processes that are occurring at the Terrigal beach area are: * Erosion, which is
effecting: * The Skillion, mainly the headland and rock platform, which is part of a preserved area of
land known as the Haven which also contains the rugby oval. The man type of erosion that affects this
is from the sea. * The sand dunes on the beaches. This area is affected by wind erosion as well as the
tides if adequate vegetative cover is not present. The main type of erosion, from the sea, takes the sand
from the sand dunes as well as the rest of the beach in a rip. The sand is then pulled out to sea where it
forms a sand bar. On calmer days, the sand is brought back to the beach. * Storm damage can affect

* Continued stabilization of the frontal dune through various methods for the past fifteen years. * The
efforts of Wamberal Terrigal Beach Protection Group have been mostly successful. Although a small
part of the front dune that was covered in spinifex grass has been lost, the erosion at Wamberal would
have been significantly worse. * Terrigal Lagoon Bushcare * What the group has been doing to help
and promote sustainability in the Terrigal beach area: * The group is mostly focused on maintaining
the vegetation of the various lagoons in the Terrigal area. As a result, most of their actions relate to the
maintenance of the lagoons. The kind of things they do include: * Restoring lagoon side bush *
Removing weeds and non native plants * Planting suitable trees, shrub, grass, etc. * The efforts of
Terrigal Lagoon Bushcare have been largely successful in keeping the lagoons around Terrigal
ecosystems. Their actions have helped the native plants compete with the introduced species. * What
individuals have been doing to help and promote sustainability: * Stopped building on dangerous
areas, usually sand dunes. * Started various community groups in order to help maintain and protect
various aspects of Terrigal and encouraging others to join. * Insuring all property owned if living in an

When Jazz Stopped Being Cool By John Blake
In his CNN article, When Jazz Stopped Being Cool, writer John Blake uses the publication of Jazz
Festival: Jim Marshall, to reflect on the life and times of Jazz music and the questions of if, how, and
when it had died. This book pays tribute to the great quantity and quality of photographical works put
forth by the prominent photographer Jim Marshall and contains written contributions by President Bill
Clinton and Nat Hentoff, a music critic. Blake explains how Jazz music was shoved from the
mainstage and eclipsed by Rock music, among other musical styles, by using three main theories. His
first theory is that Jazz music stopped making money in the same manner that it had previously. It was
surpassed by Rock album sales which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He acknowledges his readers understanding and literacy of Jazz culture by passively referencing
names of Jazz titans specifically, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and Duke Ellington. To further earn his
audience s trust, he uses relevant information and his position to gain credibility. As a writer and
producer for CNN Enterprise, he has a credible position since it can be gathered that such a
prestigious organization would not be hiring anyone who is less than qualified. He also implements
multiple pertinent sources to further his credibility in this article (i.e. Nicholas Payton s Why Jazz Isn t
Cool Anymore and Scott DeVeaux s Jazz ). He has authority as a writer and knowledge as he uses
many credible sources from significant people to convey how and why Jazz lost significance as a
musical genre. In Blake s argument, both the organization and use of evidence are effective. Blake
begins his article with statements that are bold, but easily understandable, in order to grab his readers
attention and draw them into the argument. In his introduction of the essay, he states that Jazz is Dead
(Blake) and asks the questions How it died? and When it died? . Making reference to the photos by
Jim Marshall in the book, Jazz Festival: Jim Marshall, he talks about how these pictures are
demonstrative of the life and times of Jazz in the 1960s, representing both its popularity and its

Mental Deterioration In Macbeth
Macbeth s Mental Deterioration
Mental deterioration is when one s mind begins to over analyse, breakdown, and start to do things a
healthy brain would not normally do. Symptoms may include memory loss, apathy, anxiety, inhibition,
and mood changes. Power goes to Macbeth s head, causing him to lose his sense of empathy, and
eventually his mentality. In Act I, scene 2 Macbeth is described as brave, relentless and savage. At first
glance, he appears to be a brave soldier. He is named Thane of Cawdor as a reward for his bravery .
After this, the witches predict wealth, estate, and that someday he will become king. This information
results in Macbeth having thoughts of murder (Act 1, scene 3 lns 130 142). After Duncan announced
that his son, Malcolm, will be heir to the throne Macbeth states that there is one more man in his way
of becoming king. In the article When Power Goes To Your Head, It May Shut Out Your Heart , a
neuroscientist named Sukhvinder Obhi says that power fundamentally changes how the brain operates.
The mirror system neurons become active when you or someone else squeezes a ball. Similar to when
you pick up a cup of coffee, hit a baseball, or fly a kite. Humans learn by observing and examining
other humans. Mirror neurons help humans understand how to imitate the learned trait. It somewhat
places you in another person s head. Feeling power causes a boost in the mirror system. When given
power, people have a harder time getting inside someone s head.

Antigone s Actions Cause A Political Change
It is often supposed that Antigone s actions cause a political change in the government; Creon will
become a new and improved leader after the tragedies he had to suffer through. While some may
argue that Antigone s actions cause a political change in the government, ultimately there is no
revolution because the leader never changes. After seeing his wife dead, Creon says, I killed her, I can
own no alibi: The guilt is wholly mine (Sophocles 28). This quote shows how guilty Creon feels about
the deaths of his family members as he feels that he caused their deaths. Many may say that because
of his guilt, Creon will now become a new and improved leader, which is a political change relating to
a revolution. While it is true that Creon may ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first and second estate were rich and did not pay taxes whereas the 3rd estate, which consisted of
the bourgeoisie and peasants , had to pay taxes. At the Estates General, the voting was very unfair
because the 1st and 2nd estate always agreed on the same ideas, leaving the ratio of the votes always
in a 2:1 ratio since each estate got one vote. This created no change in the government since the
disadvantaged group (3rd estate) never got any improvements in their lives. The lives of the 1st and
2nd estate remained the same. Taken together, there are no political changes in Antigone as well as in
France during the 1800 s. It is often imagined that Antigone s actions cause a social change in the
society of Thebes; the citizens of Thebes are against Creon s ideas and side with Antigone. While
some may believe that Antigone s actions cause a social change in the society, ultimately there is no
revolution because no one else besides Antigone and her fiancé, Haemon directly stand up to Creon.
When Haemon is talking to his father, Creon, he says I would not dream of criticizing yours or saying
you were wrong, even if I could. But other men can reason rightly (Sophocles 15). This shows how
other men in the city of Thebes side with Haemon and think Creon s punishment for Antigone is
wrong. Many may say that because other citizens side with Antigone, there is a social change. While it
is true that there are several citizens who side with Antigone, ultimately there

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Culture entails the way of life of people culture is the total way of life of a people, culture can also be
defined as the identity through which a particular set of people are identified. Every society, no matter
how civilized or uncivilized has its totality and way of life. This pattern or way of life is carried on
from one generation to another. It is technically and naturally impacted on to the young one s through

Comparing Tide Rises , Thanatopsis And Snowbound
The natural elements of nature as found in Henry Wadsworth Longfellow s, The Tide Rises, The Tide
Falls, William Bryant s, Thanatopsis, and John Whittier s Snowbound, each suggest a meditative
mood towards the consistency of nature s course. Through this illustration of a meditative state, each
poet captures the anticipation and the silence that is reflected in the regularity of nature. Within each
poem, the reflective contemplation on the consistency and regularity of nature creates the feeling of
regularity and the inevitable.
Anticipation in how nature will continue and the meditative mood it accompanies, is a recurring theme
that is illustrated throughout Longfellow s poem. Within the poem, the phrase that is repeated
illustrates a sense of the inevitable course of nature s rhythm; The tide rises, the tide falls (Longfellow,
275). With the repetition ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Whittier begins the poem describing the clouds of snow as an ominous prophecy of what is to come.
The anticipation of a blizzard is then contrasted with the regularity of the chores the night before; We
did our nightly chores (Whittier, 283). In Whittier s description in indulging in the regularity of the
chores, the anticipation of the impending storm creates excitement. The soundlessness that Whittier
describes during the storm, illustrates this sense of meditating and observing in silence the acts of
nature, No welcome sound of toil or mirth Unbound the spell... (Whittier, 286). In the tension of what
will happen with the storm, the sense of peace that comes with the silence of the snowfall allows for a
meditative feel. Although Whittier creates a feeling of tension with the snowfall, his descriptions of
silence allow for a feeling of peacefulness that comes with nature taking its

Laughing at Me is a true story about the author s own experiences being bullied in school. These two
books both deal with the trauma of growing up being bullied and how they both handled it. Peter

home. His parents weren t very helpful when Peter was getting bullied. Even from a young age Peter s
mom wanted him to be strong about it and deal with the bullying rather than actually help him through
it. He also had a best friend Josie Cormier, a best friend who used to defend from the bullies until she
decided to leave him for the popular crowd in sixth grade. So after so many years and years of
bullying, with no support from his family and due to the fact that he only had one friend who was also
being bullied, Peter took it into his own hands to end the harassment and he went into his school and
enacted his revenge. Unlike Peter, Jodee grew up as an only child in a loving supportive family. She

Summary Of Hester Prynne By Nathaniel Hawthorne
Chapter 2 3: Hester Prynne is a young woman who was put in jail for the crime of adultery. In the first
introduction Hester is perceived as someone who does not care what other people think of her and will
stare down the barrel of a gun. The author, Nathaniel Hawthorne, compares Hester to her babe by
showing how they are both shunned by the people viewing them. Hawthorne contrats them when
Hester stands upon the scaffold with her head held high, while her babe cries out. As Hester walks out
of her prison and stands upon the scaffold for viewing and public shame, the holier than though
women gossip about Hester s sin and shames her for her sins. The men view Hester the same way, a
sinner that should be punished and shamed.
Chapter 4 5: Hester Prynne s husband reveals himself as a doctor and offers to help her and her babe.
Her husband says that he will not hurt her adulterous partner and will spare her as well and not act as
if his wife has just cheated on him. Although he has given Hester his word, Hester is still terrified by
his words. Thy acts are like mercy, said Hester, bewildered and appalled. But thy words interpret thee
as a terror! (44). Hester s husband who named himself Roger Chillingworth, he states that he tricked
Hester into a marriage where she did not love her husband and therefore he had wronged her first.
When I betrayed thy budding youth into a false and unnatural relation with my decay. Therefore, as a

Analysis Of Lucozade And Visiting Hour
Recently I studied two poems with the same theme, Lucozade By Jackie Kay and Visiting Hour By
Norman McCaig. Both poets talk about death and by using a word set they create a mental image of
what is happening and this reminds me of times were I had to visit loved ones and how emotional it
was. The poem Lucozade was written by Jackie Kay, it is about a girl visiting her mother in a hospital
before she passes away. The poem talks about death but does so in a humorous way, making jokes and
poking fun at a traditional gifts given at hospitals did you think you could cheer me up with a woman
s own? An item given to hospital patients. The mother believes they re making a big deal out this,
because she does not want to come to the realisation that he is dying. The daughter is scared her
mother is going to die. She clears the cupboard and waves her mother goodbye then walks home
singing and old song. The poem Visiting Hour was written by Norman McCaig, it is about a man
visiting his mother in hospital. This poem is a lot darker than the other and is not humorous, It uses a
strong death related word set to set a scene in the readers head. The man is fearful of what is
happening to his mother, He walks to her white cave of forgetfulness . He gets closer to her but never
passing the distance of pain. Distance shrinks until there is none left but the distance that neither she
nor I can cross, telling us in the end, we are all alone. The mother weak and exhausted smiles. On the
first line of Lucozade Jackie Kay tells us that the mother is not well and may be on medication by
saying high bed and sad Chrysanthemums . By using the word high bed we can presume the mother is
dying or on medication to stay alive, since high beds are found in hospitals and chrysanthemums are a
symbol of death and are given at funerals additionally the words die and sad are repeated throughout
the first stanza. We hear from the daughter that she is scared, Scared her mother will die, this shows
she cares for her. In the second stanza, the mother says she does not want Lucozade to be brought to
her. Lucozade is commonly brought to hospitals so her not wanting it tells us she doesn t not want to
face reality and is scared

Abstract
Rainfall induced landslide hazards in Kenya represents a major challenge and remain an important
issue in disaster management especially in Kenya s central province region where the effects are very
common with the onset of El nin ̃o rains. The main aim of this study is to develop a rainfall induced
landslide probability map for Kenya s central province. In order to achieve this, process based
methods were used to map landslide areas using the following factors: slope, rainfall, land cover
change,Normalized DifferenceVegetation Index (NDVI)change, Curvature, watershed, and soil
characteristic including: type, texture, soil bulk density, Base Saturation, and Total Water Available
Distribution Map. The minimum conditions were set for each factor for landslide occurrence. Slope
stability mapping was done to determine the stable areas and thus derive the probability of landslide
occurrence. Statistical methods were then employed by means of weights of evidence to achieve the
probability weights for each factor considered to cause landslides. The factors were then overlaid
using the probability

The Jealous Heathcliff of Wuthering Heights Essay
The Jealous Heathcliff of Wuthering Heights
Throughout Wuthering Heights, Heathcliff s personality could be defined as dark, menacing, and
brooding. He is a dangerous character, with rapidly changing moods, capable of deep seeded hatred,
and incapable, it seems, of any kind of forgiveness or compromise. In the first 33 chapters, the text
clearly establishes Heathcliff as an untamed, volatile, wild man and establishes his great love of
Catherine and her usage of him as the source of his ill humor and resentment towards many other
characters. However, there are certain tensions, contradictions, and ambiguities present in Chapter 34
that establish the true intensity Heathcliff s feelings towards Catherine; feelings so ... Show more

him where he was the night before his he began to exhibit this odd elation, he tells her, Last night, I
was on the threshold of hell. To day I am within sight of my heaven I have my eyes on it hardly three

and little to satisfy Nelly s curiosity and wonder at his state. Joy in most characters in Wuthering
Heights is an uplifting state associated with happiness and delighted exhilaration. However in
Heathcliff, as Nelly observes, it is a horrible, frightening thing. In Heathcliff, the mood arouses
wariness and fear in others and indicates some inner change so dramatic that its cause is almost
unthinkable.
Heathcliff offers no coherent explanation for his sudden change of state and the text offers no concrete
solution as to what could have caused his dark exhilaration. Thus, the question of his condition is left
largely unanswered as Heathcliff continues to exhibit such uncharacteristic behavior, inspiring all the
more uneasiness in Nelly, especially. He frightens her greatly several

Homelessness In New York City
I. Define the Problem
For anyone living in or visiting New York City, the site of a homeless person is almost guaranteed.
Whether riding the subway, taking in the lights in Times Square, or going for a stroll in Central Park,
one is bound to see a homeless person. Homelessness does not discriminate; men and women can be
seen sleeping over a subway grate. Age is not a discriminatory factor either. Many a times one will see
a mother with her child/children sitting on the steps of a church begging for food and money.
These fairly simple observations lead to a non subjective conclusion; there are too many homeless
people in New York City. There will obviously always be some level of homelessness; it would be
naïve to assume that homelessness could be completely eliminated. However, the excessive level of
homelessness can be attributed to market failures across various market structures. This policy
proposal attempts to offer alternative solutions to alleviating these market failures, in the hopes that it
will translate into a decreased level of homelessness in New York City.
II. Assembling the Evidence
New York City has had an obligation to provide the homeless with secured shelter since 1979; during
this time, a veteran of the Korean War sued the city for failing to provide him with adequate housing.
Since then, the provision of providing a home to those who are unable to afford one was amended into
the New York State constitution, where it states the aid, care, and support

The central aim of space exploration and its chief inspiration during the 1960s was the landing of
instruments and men on the moon and planets, in particular to search for any sign of life.
When asked, What is the scientific value of sending men into space? Anatoly Blagonravov one of the
chief architects of the Soviets Unions space achievements answered, I quite agree that modern
techniques [of automatic instrumentation] permit us to solve all the scientific problems we set
ourselves. But I do not exclude that in the further development of space techniques the personal
participation of Man may be of great interest and importance. Independently of the perfection of
automatic machines, Man must see with his own eyes what is going on in space.
The Americans and the Soviet Space Program were both involved in man in space programs, but
unlike the Russians they were not inclined to minimize the scientific merits of the operation. Scientists
of the United States will welcome this technological achievement by Soviet engineers and medical
experts and by the Soviet astronaut, because it represents a further step in the exploration of space and
will inevitably add to Man s knowledge about himself and the universe in which he lives.

Longitude Essay
Longitude: The True Story of a Lone Genius Who Solved the Greatest Scientific Problem of His Time
is written by Dava Sobel. The book is called Longitude because it is about a clock maker who was
able to determine longitude. Determining longitude was the superlative scientific question in the
eighteenth century that Galileo and Newton were not able to resolve.
The principal inspiration behind the invention completed in this book is that many sailors were lost at
seas as a result of their ignorance regarding longitude. So, without the competence to determine
longitude, many innocent lives were disintegrated at seas.

1 or H 1 for short. H 1 was bar shaped, built out of shinny brass, and was big in size. His second
attempt was called H 2. H 2 was a heavy weight of 86 pounds, but fitted into a small box as John
promised it would. H 2 was also bar shaped and included an implement to ensure a unchanging drive
and a more agreeable temperature reimbursement device. Although its motion was adequately regular
and exact for finding the longitude of a ship within the nearest limits proposed by the Parliament, H 2
was not good enough for Harrison. So, Harrison devoted nineteen years to build H 3. The H 3 was the
leanest of the sea clocks and was small enough to meet the definition of amp;#8220;shipshape. ; H 3
contained bearings in the caged ball that smoothened the operation with moving parts. Unlike H 1 and
H 2, H 3 ran on two large circular balances wheels linked by metal ribbons. In addition, it was
controlled by a single spiral spring. Furthermore, Harrison introduced a bi metallic strip in the H 3.
The bi metallic strip compensates immediately and automatically for any changes in temperature that
could effect the clock amp;#8217;s going rate. But after the H 3 was completed Harrison realized that
a small watch might be the greatest device to figure out the longitude. As a result, John Harrison
completed H 4 in1759. It was very minute for a sea clock, and weighed only three pounds. It had two

Memory and how it affects Anton s character
Memory is defined as The faculty of the mind by which it retains the knowledge of previous thoughts,
impressions, or events. Memories are units of information that have impacted one s life and are stored
in the brain for years. In some cases, dramatic events may not let the brain register every single detail
about a situation. This is much like Anton s case of the winter of 1945 of the novel The Assault by
Harry Mulisch. The events of that winter affected him like no other would. The loss of his mother,
father and brother and the burning of his house left an impact on him but the events were so grave his
brain did not allow him to remember the smaller ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She becomes some sort of a mother figure to Anton. Although Anton felt as if he could remember
every word, every feeling and every scent that night in the cell, he drew a blank. Takes explains that
the woman in the cell with him was one of Ploeg s killers. This was one of those important moments
in your life that is so grave you can t allow yourself to remember. It may have been due to the fact that
Anton didn t remember, or didn t want to remember the details that remind him of the death of his
family members.
After he meets Takes he meets Karen Kortweg one of the more important characters in the plot. The
Kortweg s were the ones who took Fake Ploeg s body and dragged it in front of Anton s family s
house, the Steenwijk residence. When meeting Karen, she finally explains the reasoning behind why
she left the body in front of the Steenwijk s house and not any of the other two neighbour s houses.
Once she goes into detail about the families and her and her father s reasoning s Anton begins to
understand and remember the neighbourhood he grew up in and the events of that night.
It is amazing how memories can be jogged by a single person, object, sound or scent. The people
Anton has met and the places he revisits allow him to remember the events of his torturous past, which
permit him to determine his future. Without memories people would not be able to be happy and
reminisce on all the great moments

African American Influence On Cuban Culture
Before the popularization of Son, Cuban music and dance was largely influenced by Europe.
Compositions in the early period closely resemble songs from middle class Europe. These genres
include: the creole, canción and danzón (Moore 17). While these genres were seen as the model of
Cuban expression at the turn of the century, the Afrocuban music known as Son would soon become
(and remain) the paragon of Cuban artistic and cultural expression; the previous genres paled in
comparison in terms of popularity. Fusing African, Indigenous and European elements, Son
exemplified the transculturation that so many of the elites in Cuba were promoting as Cuba s identity;
however, the most prominent elements in Son music originated from Africa, which did ... Show more

There are two main reasons for this persistence: the brutish and inhumane practices from Spanish and
Portuguese slave traders, and the spiritual concept of ori practiced by the Yoruba. Before the abolition
of slavery in 1886, the Spanish and Portuguese s philosophy was to work their slaves to death for four
to five years, before bringing in a new hoard of bodies. Unlike the United States, there was little effort
to integrate slaves into the culture. Because no assimilation took place, African culture was never
replaced or lost in Cuba. Beyond this, the Yoruba people from Africa carried with them the tradition of
Ori. This concept referred one s culture residing in the head or consciousness, and therefore unable to

Okonkwo’s Resistance to Change in Chinua Achebe s Things...
The character of Okonkwo in Chinua Achebe s Things Fall Apart was driven by fear, a fear of change
and losing his self worth. He needed the village of Umuofia, his home, to remain untouched by time
and progress because its system and structure were the measures by which he assigned worth and
meaning in his own life. Okonkwo required this external order because of his childhood and a strained
relationship with his father, which was also the root of his fears and subsequent drive for success.
When the structure of Umuofia changed, as happens in society, Okonkwo was unable to adapt his
methods of self evaluation and ways of functioning in the world; the life he was determined to live

If he was accepted in the community, he was safe, respected, and successful, unlike his father, and his
life had meaning. Okonkwo continually rejected the ways of his father, who was deeply indebted to
other members of Umuofia, holding no titles, to the point where Okonkwo s whole life was dominated
by fear, the fear of failure and of weakness (16). He transferred his fears into the context of Umuofia
and the traits that society valued, but what was really the driving force in his decisions was the fear of
himself, lest he should be found to resemble his father (17). The values of Umuofia resembled the
polar opposite of what Unoka was and Okonkwo twisted his motivations around in his mind and
presented them to himself and the community as derived from Umuofia s traditions. From this
delusion, Okonkwo established his ultimate goal of becoming a revered member of the village,
possessing many titles, and achieving anything necessary displaying his prominence in the
community. The disparity between Okonkwo s true motivations and his warped motivations lead
Okonkwo to behave in ways which shocked other members of Umuofia with his apparent disregard
for others, but which made sense to him as he saw weakness and Unoka in alternatives. When Ezeudu,
a respected elder in Umuofia, informed Okonkwo that the village Oracle called for the killing of
Okonkwo s adopted son Ikemefuna, he asked Okonkwo not to take part. However, Okonkwo not only

Diagnosis and Treatment of Borderline Personality...
The diagnostic process for personality disorders currently covers a broad scope of various tests and

of several personality disorders can tend to blur together, making diagnosis challenging (Aldhous).
Most psychiatric patients are diagnosed with several personality disorders at once, with twenty percent

Though several personality disorders are highly complex and a challenge to treat, there are effective
treatments available ( Treating Borderline 1). The various treatments are broken down by method, the
first of which being cognitive behavioral therapy, which attempts to alter the conscious thoughts and
behavioral patterns of patients (Daniel); ( Treating Borderline 2). Cognitive behavior therapy itself is
broken down into two therapies, dialectical behavioral therapy and schema focused therapy ( Treating
Borderline 2). Dialectical behavioral therapy, developed by Dr. Linehan, is centered on the basis that
personality disorders are formed when hypersensitive patients are in situations which lack the
emotional support they require, therefore leading to their inability to regulate emotions ( Treating
Borderline 2). Thus, the treatment serves to help the patient gain control over their emotion and
behavior ( Treating Borderline 2). The treatment itself consists of group and individual sessions and
typically lasts approximately one year ( Treating Borderline 2). During the group sessions, patients
learn to become more aware of their behaviors and emotions through sessions pertaining to problem
solving, mindfulness meditation, and breath training ( Treating Borderline 2). In personal sessions,
referred to as psychotherapy, the psychiatrist explains to the patient how the lessons from the group
therapy sessions are applicable

The vision for South Africa during the 1890 s saw for various issues that needed to be dealt with. The

Gutenberg s invention made it possible to print multiple copies of a single book. Printing became

A Small Nips And The Bloody Chamber
Luce Irigaray in Women on the Market, put forth the theory that our own culture, is based upon the
exchange of women and that women are relegated to three social roles. Those roles are mother, virgin,
prostitute (807,8). She then states that the enigmatic character of women comes from the form of the
needs /desires of man (806). We are mother or prostitute determinate on man s need. She also argued
that man s libido is another name for the abstraction of energy in a productive power (806). Men use
their libido to control nature. She then argues that another name for the subordination of the specific
qualities of bodies to a neutral power that aims above all to transform them, to possess them (806).
Men transform women to his need, hence the role of mother or prostitute, and thus possess them. In
Frida Kahlo s painting, A Few Small Nips and in Angela Carter s shorty story The Bloody Chamber,
both share the theme of death as transformation for man to possess the main characters.
In Frida Kahlo s painting, A Few Small Nips, a woman lies mostly naked on white sheets. She has on
one high heeled shoe, and a rumpled sock. She has been sliced and poked by the knife that the man
standing above her is holding. The sheets are covered in blood, her body is covered in blood, and the
floor is covered in the blood. The woman is clearly dead, and the man standing above her is relaxed,

Nothing is more important in the book The Adventures of Tom Sawyer than freedom. Freedom plays
an enormous role in the book Tom Sawyer. Whether it is people earning freedom or people not being

the power to say and do what you want. Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn and Joe Harper are all boys
seeking freedom. Freedom is the key reason the boys run away to Jackson Island. Freedom is one of
the main themes in the book.
Tom is always looking for ways to earn freedom. One of the main plots in the story is Tom s quest for

Cardiff Hill is the one of the boy s symbols of freedom. Cardiff Hill is a lush, green hill that the boys
can escape to and do what ever they want primarily relax. Tom is involuntarily obligated to do his
chores and to be well behaved. One time Tom was feeling so stressed he ran off to Cardiff Hill instead
of going to school. This is a big part of the story because it is when Tom dreams of becoming a pirate,
and also when some of his superstitions are introduced. In the book, Tom usually takes his freedom
whether he has earned It or not.
One of the other main characters in the book The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn, has
freedom pretty much by default. He never had a mother that cared for him and his father is the town
drunkard thus he is an orphan. He thinks life is too based on how you look, act, and how civilized you
are. At one point in the story, the Widow Douglass takes in Huck Finn. The widow tries to transform
him into a civilized person but in the end his old ways reappear and it is too much for him. He doesn t
have to go to school, do chores, or do any form of work. His life fits perfectly into the definition of
freedom.
This Mississippi River resembles the type of lifestyle all the kids in St. Petersburg would like to live.

Humans have always been able to express a variety of emotions, whether its happiness, sadness,
empathy, etc. Yet, one of the most complicated feelings we are capable of expressing is hatred. The
reason why is because there are so many different levels of hate that one can go through, depending on
the relationship that they have with that person and why they are angry. For instance, the hate that one
feels for a stranger is very different from the hate they feel toward someone they know or care about.
This is depicted in William Blake s A Poison Tree and Carolyn Kizer s Bitch , where one of the poems
portrays the difference between the feelings of hatred one has for a close friend compared to that of a
foe, and the other describes the hate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For this reason, when one is angry with a friend, and they confess, it automatically melts into love and
friendship. However, when one is angry with an enemy, they bury their anger as it continues to grow,
because it is never expressed. According to A Poison Tree, when one buries their anger rather than
acknowledging it, that anger turns into a seed that will eventually sprout into hatred. The seed is then
nourished by the negativity of the angry person, allowing their wrath to flourish into a mighty force or
tree that could potentially destroy both parties. It is implied by the title that the tree is poison, telling
the reader that by ignoring or suppressing their anger, they are also poisoned. As a result, the tree
...grew day and night [until] it bore an apple bright, hinting at some of the destructive consequences
that can result when one cultivates their anger (9 10). For instance, the foreboding tone of the final
line; is the speaker s delight at the foe outstretched beneath the tree, which offers a warning about
what can happen when one suppresses their anger (16). Therefore, by ignoring or denying ones
feelings, they can become destructive, hostile, and even

Everything That Makes You Hero s Journey
Determining The Most Pivotal Stage Of The Hero s Journey In Everything That Makes You.
Everything That Makes You is an enticing story. Determining the most important stage of the journey
is very tough since each part of the story contributes to the plot immensely. In the end, I decided the
one most important stage is Crossing The First Threshold when Fiona gets her face renewed and her
scars erased. To understand why this stage is the most important, it would be beneficial to know when
this stage takes place. When Fiona is just about to start her surgical operation, there is some kind of a
climactic wait, which gives Fiona some time to explain the unease she has with her situation; The
anesthesiologist went through her spiel risks of side

Romeo And Juliet Conflicts
There are no rewards or punishments only consequences , this was said by writer, professor, and priest
William Ralph Inge. Romeo and Juliet has great lessons everyone can learn from. The two main
characters seem to be a little lost in their love for each other in this long twisted play where nothing
seems to go right. The story shows that secrets lead to more problems and that lying just brings more
trouble to a person. William Shakespeare wrote this play, named The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet,
which tells of a love story between Romeo and Juliet and how it affected family, friends, and enemies.
First, family has a big impact on relationships still today, but in Romeo and Juliet, parents are not as
big of a part of romantic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The parents should have been closely watching their kids and possibly the feud could have been
ended, but Romeo and Juliet were lost because of not much parental guidance.
Family has a big impact on teenagers, but friends had more impact on Romeo and Juliet. Romeo does
not have many friends besides his mentors and his cousins, they definitely have more of an impact on
Romeo and Juliet than their parents had on them. Friar, a priest, which is considered a friend of
Romeo marries Romeo and Juliet in secret, which he could have just told them to rethink this whole
thing, but he decided to marry them anyways (2.6.35 38). Friar also decides to give Juliet a potion to
knock her out for about three days so she can run away with Romeo, but this just causes more
problems which leads to the deaths of Romeo, Juliet, and Paris. Juliet s friend was the nurse who was
not very helpful to Juliet because the nurse was free spirited and did not seem to make the best
decisions. Nurse told Juliet she should marry Romeo and then when Romeo killed Tybalt, Juliet s
cousin, and got banished she started to tell Juliet how much better Paris is for her than Romeo. The
Nurse begins to say, Your first is dead, or twere as good he were, As living here and you no use of him
(3.5.225 226). Friar and the Nurse were an obvious reason that most of this secrecy started and were
not very good mentors to Romeo or Juliet.
Next, as friends were

Jackie Robinson Monologue
My name is Jack Roosevelt Robinson. You may know me as Jackie Robinson. My passion is baseball.
I played in the Negro Leagues for a little while. Not long after playing with the Negro Leagues I was
chosen by Branch Rickey to help integrate major league baseball and to play for the Montreal Royals.
This is the start of where history was made. It was opening day for spring training with the Montreal
Royals, there were lots of reporters waiting for me. Reporters asked questions like, How do you think
you will get along with the white players? and What will you do if the pitcher throws the ball at your
head? This was the day I began to experience racism in the South. I was not wanted just because I was
black. Mr. Rickey had plans to change

Internal Conflict In Short Stories
Every day, people face conflicts. Whether the conflict is caused by an outside force or something
going on in the person s own mind. The conflicts that are caused by outside forces are called external
conflicts. Some examples of this are man against man, man against nature, and man against society.
While on the other hand, internal conflict is when the narrator of the story is going against himself.
Many times when the narrator faces internal conflict it is because of something that they are needing
to do or something that they are being forced to do even if it goes against every value they believe in.
When they are forced to do something that they do not believe in, this will force the individual to
think about what they are about to do. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He knew he must find his way through that cave, or hole, or tunnel, and out the other side (Lessing
98). After Jerry found the opening of the cave, he was determined to find his way out the other side.
For the remainder of his vacation, every free minute he had was going to the ocean and working on
holding his breath. However, this task may sound easy, Jerry had a hard time accomplishing his goal.
He got many nose bleeds and many times he contemplated giving up on his goal. He had a very hard
time learning to hold his breath long enough to get through the tunnel and back up into the air. Jerry
thought about giving up on his goal many times. When the boys came back and he saw them jumping
off the cliff, he thought that he might not be good enough to make it under the rock. The last day of his
vacation Jerry knew that it had to be the day that he would go under the rock. When he went to the
bottom of the rock, he started to go through the tunnel. About halfway through the tunnel, Jerry s
lungs started to burn and his nose started to bleed. When his lungs began to burn with lack of oxygen,
he started to doubt that he was going to make it out of the tunnel. However, he kept pushing through
the tunnel thinking that he would either die trying or be able to get through the tunnel and up into the
atmosphere. When Jerry is almost at the point of needing

Food Safety Practices By Consumers, New Zealand
Summary This study identifies that costs of food safety are high in the developed world, and consumer
awareness on food safety practices is lacking especially in younger consumers. The explosion of ever
increasing fast food chains and poor food eating practices by Consumers, New Zealanders
increasingly are getting affected by Obesity and diseases such as Diabetes. According to the World
Health Organisation, New Zealand has an Obesity rate of 27% (who.int, 2008) and is ranked the 12th
most overweight country in the world (nzherald.co.nz, 2013). 225,000 kiwis also have either Type 1 or
Type 2 Diabetes (diabetes.org.nz, 2012). It can be argued that because of the increases in rates of
Diabetes and Obesity, consumers are scared of the impacts to their health and wellbeing as they grow
older and are increasingly becoming more health conscious in the choices they make for food
consumption. In the US, 64% of Consumers now agree that it s important to eat healthy foods
compared to 57% in 2010 (newhope360.com, 2013). As consumers become more health conscious,
food producers and sellers look to take advantage of this to promote and sell their food in new and
different ways that might be perceived as healthier options. One such method that is changing
consumer food preference is the emergence of local Weekend Food Markets as a hip and trendy way
to sell food to consumers versus traditional retail avenues such as supermarkets and grocery stores.
Consumers arguably favour these

Richard Rodriguez’s Challenging The Traditional Classroom...
Education is a wonderful asset to anyone. With a good one the sky is the limit, and without one
opportunity may never come knocking. In today s society, so much emphasis is put on education. How
many times have we heard the saying if you get a good education, you ll get a good job and make a lot
of money ? Even today, my parents remind me of how much a college degree would add to my
marketability. But when does it become too much? Is it possible that one could overlook the more
important values in life in search to become a learned man ? In Richard Rodriguez s story Challenging
The Traditional Classroom he examines his life as a student, and the affects his learning has towards
his attitude about family and heritage.
Rodriguez is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As Rodriguez became more involved with his academics he drifted further away from his family. The
intimacy once shared between them was disappearing. He takes his first step toward academic
success, away from his family. . His family also understood the importance of education, as his
siblings did well in school, but were never so anxious about their schooling . Upon making sure that
her children learned English, Rodriguez s mother would tell them to maintain their Spanish. This was
obviously a hint to the children to remember their culture. While soaking in all his academics,
Rodriguez intentionally abandons his culture. He makes it obvious that he wants nothing to do with
his heritage by imitating the accents and diction of his teachers. He also doesn t participate in family
gatherings, which is evident when he tells us, Nights when relatives visited and the front rooms were
warmed by Spanish sounds, I slipped quietly out of the house . Rodriguez actually uses his academics
to move further away from his culture. He believes that being educated in academics will truly make
him successful, and like his teachers .
It s sad to think that one could put so much focus on education, and not see the importance of family
and heritage. These two things are what make us who we are, and despite what we go through, they
will remain unchanged (in most cases). Rodriguez learns this lesson first hand when he realizes the
error in his

Exploring Techniques In John Steinbeck s The Preface
In the preface of the material I understand, and see the many different techniques, and counseling
methods. The Preface states and says, that therapy is composed of communication. However I never
knew how much emotional exchanges, that will take place between you and the client. The guidelines
for implementing role play exercises, I like learning about that, and it would seem very useful, but I
have never did it my self, so I will try this practice however I do not like to talk about things that,
might bother me or upset me. In addition I never really like to talk about my self. Advanced feed back
techniques I find very useful there is a lot that goes into this role play technique. Furthermore this
seems hard to remember every single thing, so I am sure it is a learning process for therapists and
counselors to. However the classes that, have been taught in this matter has shed more light then the

Native American Cultures And Development Of Native Americans
Native American populations in the 1490 s cary from 50 to 100 million people. Spread throughout the
America s, the natives adapted and shaped their ways of life according to their environment and their
surroundings. For example, the southwest settlements such as the Pueblos depended on irrigation
systems living in large numbers, where the settlements in the Great Plains region, lived a nomadic
lifestyle being dependent on buffalo as their life source. In essence, the environment where the Native
population settled led to diversity among the tribes because each tribe had to adapt to their unique
environment in order to survive. The southwest settements lived a stationary life, where those in the
Great Plains migrated as they followed their cattle. Additionally, not only did their environment vary,
their language also differed. American Indian languages consisted of more then 20 language families
including 400 distinct languages. Due to this, the ability to comminicate lacked leading to varied
beliefs, customs, cultures and development of ways of life.
Although both Spain and England conquered and settled in areas located in America, their colonies
differed. To illustrate, the English settled in areas without large native empires unlike the Spanish.
Because of this difference, the English were unable to to use natives as a controllable workforce as the
Spanish did. The Spanish used an economic system called encomienda system that relied on the use of
slavery. Additionally,

  • 2. Global Warming Historical Perspective A Historical Perspective of Global Warming Global warming is a problem that has just recently come to the forefront of world affairs. Within the last fifteen to twenty years, we have known that this problem was not only possible, but likely; but nothing has really gotten done. The origin of global warming is often disputed, and is being debated all over the world today. Whatever the cause may be, historians believe this is a problem at least 100 years in the making. Since the Industrial Revolution, we have been on a fast track to pollute Earth to a way of life altering extent. We are only beginning to see the results of that today. Most scientists base their research on proxy data; ancient sources such as carvings, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Experts are able to make this claim because, the record of the last thousand years seems to have included a notably wide range of climactic regimes. (Lamb, 301) There is no hard statistical data pertaining to the Earth s temperature s over the last thousand years, but based on the history that we have, the high middle ages saw a persistently warm climate epoch, which lasted until about 1310. The following centuries brought a series of changes, some of them abrupt, leading to the so called Little Ice Age between 1550 1700 or later. (Lamb 301) Lamb, along with many other experts, take this as hard evidence that temperature change is normal and natural, and there is no reason for us to think today s case is any different. As hot of a topic that global warming is today, not too long ago it was completely disregarded as anything we needed to pay attention to. It was found that, Around 1880 1890 it was apparent that the climactic averages of that time were very similar to those of a century earlier, and it became conventional to treat climate as essentially a constant. Accordingly, study of the development and possible changes of climate were given a very low priority or more generally neglected altogether. (Lamb, 292) The consistency within the pre industrial revolution weather patterns provides clarity as to why this problem hadn t been addressed much in modern times, or even given a second thought. Lamb provides us with a good ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Hinduism Compare And Contrast Buddhism And Jainism Buddhism and Hinduism are different from Jainism in concept of the soul, worship, sacred places and their understanding of human beings and the society around them. Buddhism and Hinduism accept the karma philosophy but each religion has its own description of karma. Jainism s teachings on karma are that of some particles that we accumulate as we act and think. Jainism also lays major emphasis on the teaching of Ahimsa which is the principle of nonviolence. The organization also has to purpose to serve as an actor to close co operation between member states on certain issues that may arise. The following matters that the Arab League oversees are any economic or financial affair; this includes commercial and customer relations and currency. They also have the power to be an actor in the co operation of communications between membered states. Communications contain railroad, roads and navigation matters. The extraction of criminals and issues with nationality or passport also fall under the acting power of the Arab League. If any of these matters lead to disagreements with membered states of the League, and it results in aggression or the threat of aggression, the threatened state may demand convocation of the council. This is how the Arab League serves as a forum. The task of the council is to decide what means are necessary to guarantee peace security, and to regulate co operations in social economic relations. Each member has a single for in the forum, regardless of the number of representatives. If a state is threatening another state, and can lead to war, the threatening state does not get a vote when the council mediates the differences. If a decision is unanimous between all the voting members, the decision of the council will be binding to all membered states. If ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Flexible Discriminant Analysis The furcula is the main element of avian flight; it is an important origin for flight muscles used in the down stroke. Many biomechanical functions have been suggested for the Furcular. Originally it was thought to play a motionless function, acting as a spacer and muscle for flight. Other studies showed a more active role, where the furcular experience distortions during the wingbeat cycle, where it spread laterally on the down stroke and rebounding during the upstroke, almost acting like a spring. This behavior might represent an energy saving adaptation to help with respiration. Past studies have found that found that subaqueous fliers have more of a V shaped furcular with a high anteroposterior curvature, whereas soaring bird are more U shaped with low anteroposterior curvature. This study seeks to clarify this form function relationship through the use of eigenshape morphometric analysis along with phylogenetic comparative methods (PCMs), and phylogenetic Flexible Discriminant Analysis (pFDA). Examination of flight modes revealed that intermittent bounders are associated with narrow interclavicular angles and straight clavicular rami. Short range fliers have a small anteroposterior curvature where larger ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Past studies showed the strength of the form and function relationship in the avian furcula, while this study examined the form and function in more modern Mesozoic birds. Following the undergraduate degree, an accounting student would choose an exclusive area to specialize in and work towards a completion of an additional year in university to finalize the 150 credit hours required in accounting to be eligible to sit for the Certified Public Accounting board exam. The 150 credit hours are needed to obtain the required body of knowledge and to develop the skills and abilities needed to be a successful CPA. After the theory portion of the educational experience is completed, the most important aspect becomes practical experience. Practical experience is what drives the market. The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants requires that either a one tier or two tier systems is required to obtain the CPA designation. This requires that relevant work experience is needed to become certified. This hands on experience helps to position a potential certified public accountant for a long and successful career. This professional curriculum is very detailed and requires a lot of individual steps entailed to reach the point of designation. When Jazz Stopped Being Cool By John Blake In his CNN article, When Jazz Stopped Being Cool, writer John Blake uses the publication of Jazz Festival: Jim Marshall, to reflect on the life and times of Jazz music and the questions of if, how, and when it had died. This book pays tribute to the great quantity and quality of photographical works put forth by the prominent photographer Jim Marshall and contains written contributions by President Bill Clinton and Nat Hentoff, a music critic. • 9. Mental Deterioration In Macbeth Macbeth s Mental Deterioration Mental deterioration is when one s mind begins to over analyse, breakdown, and start to do things a healthy brain would not normally do. Symptoms may include memory loss, apathy, anxiety, inhibition, and mood changes. Power goes to Macbeth s head, causing him to lose his sense of empathy, and eventually his mentality. In Act I, scene 2 Macbeth is described as brave, relentless and savage. At first glance, he appears to be a brave soldier. He is named Thane of Cawdor as a reward for his bravery . After this, the witches predict wealth, estate, and that someday he will become king. This information results in Macbeth having thoughts of murder (Act 1, scene 3 lns 130 142). After Duncan announced that his son, Malcolm, will be heir to the throne Macbeth states that there is one more man in his way of becoming king. In the article When Power Goes To Your Head, It May Shut Out Your Heart , a neuroscientist named Sukhvinder Obhi says that power fundamentally changes how the brain operates. The mirror system neurons become active when you or someone else squeezes a ball. Similar to when you pick up a cup of coffee, hit a baseball, or fly a kite. Humans learn by observing and examining other humans. Mirror neurons help humans understand how to imitate the learned trait. It somewhat places you in another person s head. Antigone s Actions Cause A Political Change It is often supposed that Antigone s actions cause a political change in the government; Creon will become a new and improved leader after the tragedies he had to suffer through. While some may argue that Antigone s actions cause a political change in the government, ultimately there is no revolution because the leader never changes. After seeing his wife dead, Creon says, I killed her, I can own no alibi: The guilt is wholly mine (Sophocles 28). This quote shows how guilty Creon feels about the deaths of his family members as he feels that he caused their deaths. At the Estates General, the voting was very unfair because the 1st and 2nd estate always agreed on the same ideas, leaving the ratio of the votes always in a 2:1 ratio since each estate got one vote. This created no change in the government since the disadvantaged group (3rd estate) never got any improvements in their lives. The lives of the 1st and 2nd estate remained the same. Taken together, there are no political changes in Antigone as well as in France during the 1800 s. It is often imagined that Antigone s actions cause a social change in the society of Thebes; the citizens of Thebes are against Creon s ideas and side with Antigone. While some may believe that Antigone s actions cause a social change in the society, ultimately there is no revolution because no one else besides Antigone and her fiancé, Haemon directly stand up to Creon. When Haemon is talking to his father, Creon, he says I would not dream of criticizing yours or saying you were wrong, even if I could. But other men can reason rightly (Sophocles 15). This shows how other men in the city of Thebes side with Haemon and think Creon s punishment for Antigone is wrong. Comparing Tide Rises , Thanatopsis And Snowbound The natural elements of nature as found in Henry Wadsworth Longfellow s, The Tide Rises, The Tide Falls, William Bryant s, Thanatopsis, and John Whittier s Snowbound, each suggest a meditative mood towards the consistency of nature s course. Through this illustration of a meditative state, each poet captures the anticipation and the silence that is reflected in the regularity of nature. Within each poem, the reflective contemplation on the consistency and regularity of nature creates the feeling of regularity and the inevitable. Anticipation in how nature will continue and the meditative mood it accompanies, is a recurring theme that is illustrated throughout Longfellow s poem. Within the poem, the phrase that is repeated illustrates a sense of the inevitable course of nature s rhythm; The tide rises, the tide falls (Longfellow, 275). With the repetition ... The soundlessness that Whittier describes during the storm, illustrates this sense of meditating and observing in silence the acts of nature, No welcome sound of toil or mirth Unbound the spell... In the first introduction Hester is perceived as someone who does not care what other people think of her and will stare down the barrel of a gun. The author, Nathaniel Hawthorne, compares Hester to her babe by showing how they are both shunned by the people viewing them. Hawthorne contrats them when Hester stands upon the scaffold with her head held high, while her babe cries out. As Hester walks out of her prison and stands upon the scaffold for viewing and public shame, the holier than though women gossip about Hester s sin and shames her for her sins. The men view Hester the same way, a sinner that should be punished and shamed. Chapter 4 5: Hester Prynne s husband reveals himself as a doctor and offers to help her and her babe. Her husband says that he will not hurt her adulterous partner and will spare her as well and not act as if his wife has just cheated on him. Although he has given Hester his word, Hester is still terrified by his words. Thy acts are like mercy, said Hester, bewildered and appalled. But thy words interpret thee as a terror! (44). Hester s husband who named himself Roger Chillingworth, he states that he tricked Hester into a marriage where she did not love her husband and therefore he had wronged her first. The poem talks about death but does so in a humorous way, making jokes and poking fun at a traditional gifts given at hospitals did you think you could cheer me up with a woman s own? An item given to hospital patients. The mother believes they re making a big deal out this, because she does not want to come to the realisation that he is dying. The daughter is scared her mother is going to die. She clears the cupboard and waves her mother goodbye then walks home singing and old song. The poem Visiting Hour was written by Norman McCaig, it is about a man visiting his mother in hospital. This poem is a lot darker than the other and is not humorous, It uses a strong death related word set to set a scene in the readers head. The man is fearful of what is happening to his mother, He walks to her white cave of forgetfulness . He gets closer to her but never passing the distance of pain. Distance shrinks until there is none left but the distance that neither she nor I can cross, telling us in the end, we are all alone. The mother weak and exhausted smiles. On the first line of Lucozade Jackie Kay tells us that the mother is not well and may be on medication by saying high bed and sad Chrysanthemums . By using the word high bed we can presume the mother is dying or on medication to stay alive, since high beds are found in hospitals and chrysanthemums are a symbol of death and are given at funerals additionally the words die and sad are repeated throughout the first stanza. We hear from the daughter that she is scared, Scared her mother will die, this shows she cares for her. In the second stanza, the mother says she does not want Lucozade to be brought to her. Lucozade is commonly brought to hospitals so her not wanting it tells us she doesn t not want to face reality and is scared ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Mwaniki, Email: mercimwaniki@yahoo.com Abstract Rainfall induced landslide hazards in Kenya represents a major challenge and remain an important issue in disaster management especially in Kenya s central province region where the effects are very common with the onset of El nin ̃o rains. The main aim of this study is to develop a rainfall induced landslide probability map for Kenya s central province. In order to achieve this, process based methods were used to map landslide areas using the following factors: slope, rainfall, land cover change,Normalized DifferenceVegetation Index (NDVI)change, Curvature, watershed, and soil characteristic including: type, texture, soil bulk density, Base Saturation, and Total Water Available Distribution Map. The minimum conditions were set for each factor for landslide occurrence. Slope stability mapping was done to determine the stable areas and thus derive the probability of landslide occurrence. Statistical methods were then employed by means of weights of evidence to achieve the probability weights for each factor considered to cause landslides. The factors were then overlaid using the probability ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Jealous Heathcliff of Wuthering Heights Essay The Jealous Heathcliff of Wuthering Heights Throughout Wuthering Heights, Heathcliff s personality could be defined as dark, menacing, and brooding. He is a dangerous character, with rapidly changing moods, capable of deep seeded hatred, and incapable, it seems, of any kind of forgiveness or compromise. In the first 33 chapters, the text clearly establishes Heathcliff as an untamed, volatile, wild man and establishes his great love of Catherine and her usage of him as the source of his ill humor and resentment towards many other characters. However, there are certain tensions, contradictions, and ambiguities present in Chapter 34 that establish the true intensity Heathcliff s feelings towards Catherine; feelings so ... His statement is ambiguous it does little to explain his sudden change of humor and little to satisfy Nelly s curiosity and wonder at his state. Joy in most characters in Wuthering Heights is an uplifting state associated with happiness and delighted exhilaration. However in Heathcliff, as Nelly observes, it is a horrible, frightening thing. In Heathcliff, the mood arouses wariness and fear in others and indicates some inner change so dramatic that its cause is almost unthinkable. Heathcliff offers no coherent explanation for his sudden change of state and the text offers no concrete solution as to what could have caused his dark exhilaration. Thus, the question of his condition is left largely unanswered as Heathcliff continues to exhibit such uncharacteristic behavior, inspiring all the more uneasiness in Nelly, especially. • 23. Homelessness In New York City I. Define the Problem For anyone living in or visiting New York City, the site of a homeless person is almost guaranteed. Whether riding the subway, taking in the lights in Times Square, or going for a stroll in Central Park, one is bound to see a homeless person. Homelessness does not discriminate; men and women can be seen sleeping over a subway grate. Age is not a discriminatory factor either. Many a times one will see a mother with her child/children sitting on the steps of a church begging for food and money. These fairly simple observations lead to a non subjective conclusion; there are too many homeless people in New York City. There will obviously always be some level of homelessness; it would be naïve to assume that homelessness could be completely eliminated. However, the excessive level of homelessness can be attributed to market failures across various market structures. This policy proposal attempts to offer alternative solutions to alleviating these market failures, in the hopes that it will translate into a decreased level of homelessness in New York City. II. Assembling the Evidence New York City has had an obligation to provide the homeless with secured shelter since 1979; during this time, a veteran of the Korean War sued the city for failing to provide him with adequate housing. Since then, the provision of providing a home to those who are unable to afford one was amended into the New York State constitution, where it states the aid, care, and support ... The book is called Longitude because it is about a clock maker who was able to determine longitude. Determining longitude was the superlative scientific question in the eighteenth century that Galileo and Newton were not able to resolve. The principal inspiration behind the invention completed in this book is that many sailors were lost at seas as a result of their ignorance regarding longitude. H 2 was also bar shaped and included an implement to ensure a unchanging drive and a more agreeable temperature reimbursement device. Although its motion was adequately regular and exact for finding the longitude of a ship within the nearest limits proposed by the Parliament, H 2 was not good enough for Harrison. So, Harrison devoted nineteen years to build H 3. The H 3 was the leanest of the sea clocks and was small enough to meet the definition of amp;#8220;shipshape. ; H 3 contained bearings in the caged ball that smoothened the operation with moving parts. Unlike H 1 and H 2, H 3 ran on two large circular balances wheels linked by metal ribbons. In addition, it was controlled by a single spiral spring. Furthermore, Harrison introduced a bi metallic strip in the H 3. The bi metallic strip compensates immediately and automatically for any changes in temperature that could effect the clock amp;#8217;s going rate. But after the H 3 was completed Harrison realized that a small watch might be the greatest device to figure out the longitude. As a result, John Harrison completed H 4 in1759. He transferred his fears into the context of Umuofia and the traits that society valued, but what was really the driving force in his decisions was the fear of himself, lest he should be found to resemble his father (17). The values of Umuofia resembled the polar opposite of what Unoka was and Okonkwo twisted his motivations around in his mind and presented them to himself and the community as derived from Umuofia s traditions. From this delusion, Okonkwo established his ultimate goal of becoming a revered member of the village, possessing many titles, and achieving anything necessary displaying his prominence in the community.
