High Rates Of Employee Turnover Essay
High rates of employee turnover can have a negative effect on an organization. This subject has
received attention from human resource professionals, senior management and other industrial
psychologists. Employee attrition is sometimes intractable and one of the most expensive human
resource challenge which most companies face. An organization makes a lot of investments in their
employees in terms of induction, recruitment, their development and training, retaining and
maintaining them within the organization. Manpower is instrumental for the technology industry
and employee turnover is a challenge in Amazon. In an increasing competitive technology
landscape, the technology industry should come into terms the need for restructuring in aspects
matching industry growth and career progression opportunities. There is a necessity to give the
high labor turnover Amazon experiences attention and arrive at benchmark practices that will solve
the administrative and operational challenge the high levels of employee turnover pose. This paper
will evaluate and analyze the impact of employee turnover using the analytical and creative problem
solving in Amazon Virtual Contact Center. The information that this report will provide will enable
Amazon to promote strategies that will reduce the high rates of employee turnover while at the
same time optimize staff retention by enhancing job satisfaction, organizational commitment,
quality service, recruitment, productivity and excellence.

How Does L1 Support Literacy In L2
In this paper, I will discuss definitions of literacy, review research related to the transfer of
literacy skills, and suggest practical applications of research findings of ways Linguistics (L1)
support literacy in L2 for individuals learning English as a Second Language (ESL). Further, I will
explore instructional practices implemented as L1 is transferred to L2 knowledgebase. As learning
practices for L1 and L2 are outlined, cognates of L2 will be demonstrated in this paper for further
understanding. In addition, L1 proficiency learners stem from individuals first language also
known as their mother language. L1 can be described in four acquisition stages from the following:

Literacy in L1 can support literacy in L2 in a variety of ways. Many researchers and practitioners
in ESL/Bilingual Education or ESL/BE are aware of research evidence which supports such
transfer, but research is not always applied to practice. According to Roberts (1994), literacy in L1
supports L2 by being able to transfer the teachings to L2 students. Research shows that knowledge
of alphabets and awareness of phonological can an are strong predictors of literacy development in
children being successful (Ford, K.2005).
Lee Schaller s (1997) quantitative study examined the relationships between ELL students who
demonstrated a level of proficiency compared to ELL students basic reading skills. The study
(1997) tested two hypotheses to check reliability and validity; the hypotheses were examined
from the following: (1) a foundation of language proficiency showed learners with below
average levels in L2 proficiency showed little relationship between their L1 and L2 reading
ability whereas learners with above average in L2 proficiency demonstrated a positive
relationship between their L1 and L2 reading abilities.(b) The benefit of L2 proficiency was
higher than the benefit of L1 reading ability in predicting L2 reading ability. In addition, Schaller
Lee s (1997) study showed a correlation between the two hypotheses. For example, when L2
learners obtain previous knowledge from L1 experiences, their reading skills can potentially
improve as information is

Diamond Foods Fraud
Allegations of Diamond Foods Inc. s Understatement of Accounts Payable.
Abstract On November 1, 2011, Diamond Foods Inc. s (NASDAQ: DMND) unexpectedly
disclosed serious discrepancies (possible understatement of accounts payable) regarding its 2011
financial statement reports and as a result announced its decision to delay its acquisition of the
Pringles snack business from Procter amp; Gamble Company (P amp;G) (NYSE: PG). Naturally,
the November 1, 2011 confession caused an immediate plunge of Diamond Food s stock price, but
worse, it triggered several lawsuits from furious investors and created rumors about the future
viability of the company. The purpose of this study is to determine the facts and critically analyze

The controversy lies with a payment made to farmers on September 2011, well after the end of
Diamond s fiscal year closing, July 31, 2011. Diamond classified this particular payment to
walnut farmers as a momentum payment of 30 to 40 cents per pound for the coming 2011 crop.
However, the walnut farmers contend that the payment was really a way to compensate them for
their 2010 crop payment deficiency. The walnut farmer s contention is very interesting. Essentially
you can draw two scenarios from the information that has been provided so far: Scenario 1. The
walnut farmers were indeed paid in full for their 2010 crop and the momentum payment was truly a
pre payment for the farmer s 2011 crop. Scenario 2. Diamond insidiously understated 2011 accounts
payable to walnut farmers as a way to bolster their 2011 net income. Potentially Fraudulent 2011
Financial Statements The remainder of this report will focus on scenario 2. So what s the big deal?
Why would Diamond want to make their income statement look better? Recall the acquisition of
Pringle chips from P amp;G When Diamond announced on April 2011 that it was going to acquire
Pringle chips form P amp;G, its stock surged. Unfortunately, according to Andrejczak of

Honor in No One Writes to the Colonel and Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Garcia Marquez
Every culture in the world has its own unique set of values that they adhere to in life. The most
important value to people is their honor. Honor is a very important factor in a person life that
they will stop at nothing to make sure it is not lost. This endless pursuit of keeping honor can
causes both positive and negative effects to a society. The reason honor is a main driving force in a
person s life is for the simple fact that it determines how the society views that person s integrity,
honesty and truthfulness to himself and family.
In the two novellas No One Writes to the Colonel and Chronicle of a Death Foretold, Garcia

The Colonel and his wife consequently starve in order to maintain the honor given by the rooster.
They conceal this humiliation of poverty by giving a false illusion of who they are to their
neighbors. The Colonel believes that starvation is necessary as long as they are honorable to the
liberal party and their son. The wife of the Colonel states I [place] stones on to boil so the
neighbors wouldn t know that we often go with out food for days (159). The Colonel s wife feels
humiliated that they have to live in poverty to maintain honor. In a moment of doubt the Colonel s
wife states to the Colonel you can t eat dignity (160). Then the author uses a brief interruption in the
setting to show incorrectness in the wife s comment. Garcia uses the interruption of lighting to
show that what the wife said was wrong and that lying and maintaining their honor is the most
important thing to do.
This same idea that maintaining honor can cause a person to live a life of lies is seen in the
novella Chronicle of a Death Foretold. The whole town covers up and lies about being involved
and having any information about Santiago Nasar s death. They do this because they want to
honor the Vicario family by making the murder look justifiable and a strict matter of family honor.
The narrator states that, affairs of honor are sacred monopolies, giving access only to those who
are part of it

Personal Narrative-Changing Experience With Soccer
I ve been playing soccer a long time, longer than i remember. My dad says i ve played since I
was four. Despite that, as a freshman in highschool I still wasn t very good. id simply drifted
through ten years worth of summer and fall leagues, only picking up enough skill to become the
captain of my school s C team.
The team wasn t hopeless, for a c team. most of our players had played soccer before, usually in
the same recreational leagues I grew up in. we were about average better than some, worse than
some but we managed to stay on track for a winning season, more than the JV and Varsity teams
could say. Before the last game of the season our record was seven wins, and seven losses. A win
would push us above .500.
The game was almost over, and looked like it would end in a tie, when the referee called a penalty
kick on the other team. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Scoring a penalty kick looks like the easiest thing to do in sports. Just put the small ball through
the big goal, and you score. But when you are standing in front of the goal, just you and the goalie,
it gets a lot harder. The game becomes a sort of psychological warfare between kicker and goalie,
each one trying to get into the other s head. Anyways, that day coach decided it was my turn to
take the kick. I had a chance to be the hero or the goat, as Charlie Brown says. I wanted to be the
hero so I ran up to the ball and kicked it as hard as I could. I would have scored a perfect field goal
if i had been playing the right kind of football. Instead the game wound down and ended in a

The Worst Gun Atrocities Of Modern American History Essay
The worst gun massacre in modern American history happened on April 16, 2007 at Virginia
Tech. It started off as an ordinary Monday morning. Twenty three year old Seung Hui Cho moved
methodically from classroom to classroom, shooting rapidly and randomly. When he was done,
thirty two students and faculty members were dead; twenty five others were wounded. As the
police closed in on him, he saved a final bullet for himself. The Virginia Tech shooter s choice of
weapons were a 9 mm Glock 19 pistol and a .22 caliber Walther P22. Both guns were semiautomatic
handguns purchased legally at stores. Cho had a long history of behavioral and emotional
problems, and in 2005, a judge declared him mentally ill and a danger to himself and others. This
information should have been adequate to prohibit him from purchasing a handgun, but Virginia did
not have strict gun laws to prevent him from buying the guns. If Virginia had stricter gun laws, it
might have been an ordinary Monday. Although the constitution says that right to bear arms should
not be infringed recent times have showed us that that statement is a double edged sword. Increased
gun control measures are needed to stop certain aspects that are being used as loopholes to avoid
current laws. Supporters of more gun control laws state that the Second Amendment was intended
for militias; that gun violence would be reduced; that gun restrictions have always existed; and that
most Americans, including gun owners, support new gun

The Effect Of Solar And On Earth
Most solar storms produce a variety of effects on our planet. The intensity of a solar storm
increase gradually, the storm can begin to develop the capacity to create a major disaster on
Earth. The variety of intensity of solar storm is like the difference between being hit with a
tropical rainstorm and being devastated by a Category 5 hurricane. Oak Ridge National
Laboratories estimated that only a solar storm just slightly stronger than the 13 March 1989 storm
would have the capacity to produce a cascading blackout involving the entire Northeastern sector
of the United States and other effect on the terrestrial biological systems. So the question is what
are the components of Solar Flares? How does it cause damages? What are they? Are there any
measures to mitigate the risks? This paper dissects and analyzes the various threats created by
Great solar storms and provide some Theorell experiences and research details that entail the
phenomena and its effects.
Solar Flares:
Definition and Impacts Introduction
Solar storms consist of three major components: solar flares, solar proton events (SPEs) and
coronal mass ejections (CMEs). CMEs can interact with Earth s magnetic field to produce a
geomagnetic storm. Not all solar storms produce all three elements but the largest solar storms tend
to. (James. A Maruesk 2007) Recent scientific information indicates that an extreme solar storm
cycle activity producing Geomagnetically Induced Currents (GIC) is predicted to

The Effects Of Emotional Abuse On Mental Abuse
Can a tongue do as much damage as a fist? The seriousness of emotional abuse as opposed to
physical abuse is a controversial topic. Some bring the power of emotional abuse into question,
alluding that since the threat is not imminent and a person cannot exactly succumb from spoken
words, it is not as damaging. However, if a wound or scar is not visible, does it make it any less
real or devastating? The effects of emotional abuse are far reaching and overwhelming, and
should therefore receive at least the same sensitivity and awareness, as physical abuse. Jackie, a
driven young woman, walks to her office, compliments trailing her like overexcited puppies. It
was a very successful meeting and everyone seems satisfied with the outcome. However, Jackie
is distracted and barely hears the compliments; they bounce off her like rubber balls. Her mind is

The Importance Of Civil Rights In The NFL Players
Players from the National Football League(NFL) are taking a stand for the violation of civil
rights in our country. This started to be an issue when Colin Kaepernick took a knee during the
playing of the national anthem. In many eyes, the ways these NFL players are expressing their
opinion is very frowned upon. It has snowballed into a heated viewpoint of the NFL and has
many fans boycotting. The NFL stars are protesting violations in civil rights in an unpopular
fashion because the national anthem is not the problem rather than the events occurring in our

not the problem rather than the events occurring in our country. Colin Kaepernick said, I am not
going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of
color, (Wyche, 2016). With his decision to kneel during the anthem it has lead to many
problems associated with the NFL. Problems associated with his decision to kneel includes tv
ratings and merchandise sells of the NFL are at an all time low. Another problem is that teams
are afraid to sign Colin Kaepernick and get in the middle of all of the controversy surrounding

consult with their regular physician who may not know too much about dementia and its

are many other medical conditions that mimic dementia symptoms that make a proper diagnosis of

The Book Of Esther And Women
Her Story: The Book of Esther and Women in the Leadership Role Women have played important
leadership roles throughout history and the biblical story of Esther is one such example. The
Book of Esther is about the fear of a feminine insurrection against patriarchal order and sacrifice
within the community. The objective of this paper is to explore how the world s view of a women
s role in leadershiphas evolved from the third century BCE to present day by examining the biblical
understanding of leadership regarding Estherand Vashti through a historical, literary, and
contemporary perspective.
Leadership through a historical perspective Set in the Persian Empire of King Ahasuerus (486 465
BCE), the story of Esther reveals the defenselessness of women within an already vulnerable
community of diasporic Jews (Leith, 2010, p. 709). In this society, women were the lowest
members of the community, rarely had control of their own lives, and depended on the male
relatives in the community to take care of them. Traditionally, the definition of leadership, The
ability to make strategic decisions and use communication effectively to mobilize group members
toward achieving a common goal usually describes a position held by males (Engleberg, Wynn,
2013, p. 100). However, the leadership role can be performed by anyone willing to take on the
job. It can be a matter of being in right place at the right time, Very often, the most effective

Regardless, these magazines are attainable to people of all ages and can be a negative influence
for young adults. The key factor that advertisers of alcoholic beverages should consider is that

several times more likely to see alcohol advertisements than adults would during this time period
(Hopkins n.pag.). Magazines and advertisements illustrate the consumption of alcohol and they try

Regarding this time period as well, teenagers of the 21st century rely on social media and

The Role Of Grendel s Evil Character In Beowulf
In times before printed books were common, stories and poems were passed from generation to
generation by word of mouth. From such oral traditions come great epics such as England s heroic
epic, Beowulf. In Beowulf, the monster Grendel serves as the evil character acting against the poem
s hero, as shown by his unnatural strength, beast like qualities, and alienation from society.
One of the first responses from a reader of Beowulf is their surprise at Grendel s unnatural
strength, one quality marking him as an evil character. His great strength is shown first in his
ability to carry enormous amounts of weight. There occur several instances in the story where
Grendel lifts great amounts of weight. In Grendel s first raid of Herot, a ... Show more content on

Grendel s description leads the reader to believe he is less human, and more animalistic, than the
other characters. Repeatedly throughout the poem, the diction surrounding Grendel leads to the
picture of a terrible animal; one so horrifying only the imagination could create it. The first
description of Grendel is one of a powerful monster (l. 23). This immediately creates imagery of a
large, vicious animal. Also, throughout the story, Grendel only appears at night, as would a
nocturnal hunting animal. Traditionally, the evil creatures of the earth and fiction commit their evil
deeds during the night. Then, when darkness had dropped (l. 52 53), when the night hid him (l.
104), and through the cloudy night (l. 367), are only several of many instances that illustrate
Grendel s hunting habits, those of an animal. The sheer terror this night haunting, animalistic
creature rages on the Danes is such that only a force of true evil could produce it, once again
showing Grendel as the epic evil character in Beowulf.
A fact that seems quite obvious, but is commonly overlooked, is the evil character s alienation
from society. Of course no one wants a beast like creature with unnatural strength living in their
community; Grendel s banishment from society points directly to his evil character status in
Beowulf. From the onset of the story, Grendel is shunned by society. He is described as spawned .

Patch Adams Patch Study Guide
Based, loosely, on a true story, Patch Adams follows Hunter Patch Adams (played by Robin

a suicide attempt, checks himself into a psychiatric hospital, where he learns the power of humor
and laughter on a patients quality of life and earns the nickname Patch for fixing another patient s
cup. Now inspired to become a doctor, two years following his institutionalization, Adams enrolls
in Virginia Medical University, where he is the oldest first year student. There he finds himself in

regarding his actions and the rationale behind them. He tells the jury that he did his best to help his
patients and insisted that, though treating the body is win or lose, treating the spirit is always a
win, even when death is the outcome. He encourages the jury and other medical students to
cultivate relationships with their patients and treat death with dignity and humor. The jury takes
Adams s side in the proceedings, agrees in the utility and correctness of his methods, and rules that

I have been an avid outdoorsman for as long as I can remember. I grew up hiking the
Appalachian Trail in Pennsylvania and fly fishing on some great trout waters. I was fortunate
enough to spend my college years in Colorado, where I continued to fish incredible rivers. And,
even if I were not to catch anything at all, I would still spend the day in some of the most serene
environments that I had ever seen. My passion to obtain a Master s degree and eventually a
doctorate arises from my love of the outdoors and my desire to contribute meaningfully to

Demand For Medical Care Essay
Demand for Medical Care
The demand for medical care is derived from our demand for good health. Michael Grossman was
the first to do econometric research on this topic. Grossman s work established two approaches for
consideration. In the first, medical care is viewed as an input in the production function for health,
and in the second, as an output produced by medical care providers (Henderson, p.142). There are
two main factors that determine the demand for medical care. The first is the patient factor. This
includes a patient s health status, demographic characteristics and economic status. The second is
the physician factor. This is an interesting topic because it introduces the principal (patient) agent
(physician) problem. We are... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is a moral question that we need to answer is when do you stop? Thomas McKeown (1976)
noticed that there was a secular decline in mortality rates. The quality of life was one of the
major factors. There was an increase in income as well as education. The living standards and
nutrition chipped in as well. The public health authorities improved sanitation. Which in return
all lead to a decrease in diseases. An increase in technology also helped the cause. Diseases like
cancer where slowed due to Chemotherapy and stricter regulations directed to corporations on
dumping waste. (Henderson p.145) Genetics also play a major role in determining our health.
Half of your genes come from your father and the other half from your mother. There are two
factors that play a critical role in determining the health of an individual: the risk of exposure to
a particular disease and the ability of the individual to resist the disease (and recover from its
consequences) once exposed (Henderson p.144). If your father has high blood pressure then his
siblings are susceptible to high blood pressure too. Now we will look at the determinants in the
demand for medical care. Henderson defines demand as the sacrifice an individual is willing to
make in order to obtain a given amount of a particular good or service. In other words you can t
always get what you want. Need rarely equals demand. Need is almost always greater than demand.

gain a greater understanding and a possible explanation of why there are such high rates of ill

of diseases including diabetes, heart disease and obesity in our indigenous population. Looking at

It was this day that was the start of a long dark history of cruelty and ill treatment towards the
traditional custodians of Australia.
Under the terra nullius law, the Aboriginals lost their land, which is now known as dispossession.
To justify this dispossession, the English followed the set of beliefs that are now identified as
social Darwinism. Social Darwinism, with its powerful racially based doctrines, ranked Indigenous
Australians as inferior to Europeans and provided a rationale for dispossession by drawing on the
laws of natural selection to justify the inevitable extinction of Indigenous Australians in the face of
the arrival of the superior white race (Psychology and Indigenous Australians, Foundations of
Cultural Competence, 2009, pp. 75). By having their land taken away from them, the Aboriginals
lost part of their spiritual connection and their sense of belonging and identity because Aboriginal
culture is based heavily on the spirits of the land. These connections that bonded the Aboriginals
to the land were never understood by the English settlers, who only saw the land as possible
income (Psychology and Indigenous Australians, Foundations of Cultural Competence, 2009.).
They also lost a lot of their sacred areas, spiritual areas and meeting places because they were on

The Era Of The 1920s
The 1920s was a pivotal era in women s fashion an era that saw Prohibition, Jazz and celebration
of war s end. Gone was the hourglass figure of the 19th Century, swept away by the World War I,
and replaced by the figure of a modern, independent woman. This book covers fashions from 1920
to 1924, an often overlooked period of fashion which was a time of transition between the draped
and layered fashions of the post World War I era and the free and easy gowns of the jazz age flapper
.
Before the Roaring Twenties, women were still wearing floor length dresses with corsets, and
crinolines, arms and legs were covered, hair was long. This Gibson girl look was set the standard
for beauty, fashion and manner. And the Victorian attitudes toward dress and etiquette created a
strict moral climate.
Until 1920s things changed quickly, the women was given the right to vote, they began to attend
college. The Equal Rights Amendment was proposed in 1923. The World War I was over and men
wanted their jobs back. Women, though, who had taken up men s jobs while they were at war, had
proved themselves worthy of men s jobs, so many organizations and feminist reformers took up the
task to encourage gender equality.
Many important things happened in the 1920 s like prohibition and jazz music. Something that is
also very significant is that this was the decade where fashion began entering a modern era. After
decades of Victorian style, clothing such as corsets and petticoat, fashion was finally

Messages are delivered via symbols amongst other factors such as speech, written documents, etc.
They help an individual assign meaning to the society around them. With that, a message can mean
multiple things depending on the listeners and how it is conveyed. In my case, as a Communication

Principal Agent Relationship Essay
Within a federal republic, such as the United States, we tend to rely on representatives to represent
us as a nation rather than us representing the nation. This is due to people s capacity of knowledge
as not everyone can be the best of themselves in every area. Eventually, leading to representatives,
who have the knowledge in politics and government, in representing the people of every state. This
type of situation is when the people, who are the principals, gives authority to the representative,
who are the agents, to represent them. By definition, the principals are those who possess authority
and agents are individuals who execute the authority on behalf of the principals (Kernell 29).

This is a principal and agent relationship because the client is delegating its authority to the
lawyer. The lawyer ends up being the agent who has received authority from the principal to
handle the issue that the principal is requesting. The client gives authority to the lawyer because
the client does not have the necessary knowledge to handle a matter that requires additional

Terrifying Events in the Ocean in Steven Spielberg s...
Clenching teeth, defined facial bone structure and fine dentistry; the title of Steven Spielberg s
classic film Jaws paints quite a mental picture for its viewers with many possibilities. Along with
the title, the original film poster used to promote Jaws was visually colorful and terrifying all at the
same time. The poster indicates an oversized great white sharklurking in the dark depths of the sea,
looking up towards the surface at a swimmer. Waiting and watching, the imagery of the poster gives
the viewer the feeling that the shark is waiting for just the right moment to attack with its powerful
bone crushing jaws. What makes this film so interesting and captivating is that for over half of
Spielberg s film the protagonist, the shark, is nowhere to be seen. The way Steven Spielberg

Theme Of The Moon In A Midsummer Night Dream
The sun is a constant in our lives. We wake up to it faithfully rising on the horizon. We enjoy its
unceasing warmth and energy throughout the day before falling asleep after it sets. With night
passing quickly, we take no notice of the moon that resides in place of the sun. However, it is this
unnoticed moonthat more accurately mirrors our perception of time and the phases in our lives.
William Shakespeare realized this about the moon. In his play, A Midsummer s Night Dream, he
uses the motif of the moon to symbolize both time and the phases in our lives just as he does
through the characters of the play.
Shakespeare conveys the passage of time through the character of Theseus early on in the play.
Theseus, referencing the moon, expresses his distaste for how slow time is passing by saying
in line 2: Another moon: but, O, methinks, how slow this old moon wanes! she lingers my
desires, like to a step dame or a dowager long withering out a young man revenue (AMND 1.1.3
6.) Theseus is dissatisfied because he wants to be with his fiance, Hippolyta, now rather than
waiting for the moon to wane. However, Hippolyta reassuringly replies to Theseus in line 8, that
Four days will quickly steep themselves in night; Four nights will quickly dream away the time;
And then the moon, like to a silver bow new bent in heaven, shall behold the night of our
solemnities (1.1.7 11). Hippolyta, also referring to the moon, is telling Theseus that soon enough
the time will be here for them to be together. Another example of the moon representing time can
be seen when Theseus is speaking to Hermia about who she will marry and how she will obey
her father s commands. Take time to pause; and, by the nest new moon The sealing day betwixt
my love and me, (1.1.85 87). Here again, Shakespeare uses the motif of the moon to represent time
and effectively shows how his characters live their lives around it.
Shakespeare also uses the idea of moon phases to symbolize both the difficulties and the good
fortunes in one s life. For example, Shakespeare relates the darkness of the moon to the difficult
life of a nun and the difficult decision that Hermia must make. In Lines 70 78, Theseus declares to
Hermia, Whether, if

holding in effect that any racial classification by the government is unconstitutional, that no

higher education?
In Bakke v Regents of the University of California, we have a landmark reverse discrimination
case that influenced education as a whole. Bakke was rejected from graduate school even though
he had superior scores than many of the African American applicants who were admitted. Bakke
challenged the University of California and overturned the quota system that had been established
in public universities across the nation. The University of California held on to the belief that
black people should have access to black doctors. However, if the University were to go on a sole
merit system then the number of special admittees would diminish along with the aforementioned
belief. This belief was quickly altered by the Supreme Court with their decision against the
University.
While the approach the Courts use is meant to be color blind, the outcome is anything but color
blind. This can be seen through an examination of the equal protection jurisprudence of Justice O

An Account of the Rosewood Incident
After the reconstruction period there was high tension between the whites and blacks in the south.
Whites wanted nothing to do with black people and didn t want to have to share anything with
them. Whites did everything they could to intimidate blacks to keep them in their place . Black
people wanted nothing but to live their lives with their new found freedom, but they saw that no
matter what the law said they would never be accepted by the white community. White peopleoften
acted out in violence towards blacks whatever chance they got to drive them out. Anything a black

King Leopold s Ghost By Adam Hochschild
The late 1800 s marked the peak of imperialism throughout Europe, primarily Africa. As a new
century began to evolve, many European powers aggressively decide to surmount their power in
many parts of Africa. More specifically, King Leopold s journey to conquer the Congo and
exploit the lucrative rubber/ivory market accurately describes the forced efforts of tyranny. King
Leopold s Ghost by Adam Hochschild explains the propaganda remunerated by people in favor
and opposition of King Leopold s conquest. It also features the contributions of journalists and
writers in relation to Leopold colonizing the Congo through means of propaganda, missionaries,
use of other countries, and other various other methods to end his rule and change the common
perceptions of imperialism. The main goal, however, of writers in the Congo, was to let the
world know of Leopold s actions and to end his selfish ruling. The role of journalists became most
prevalent beginning in the 1880 s. In 1885, under the pretense of philanthropy, King Leopold II
Belgium claimed land along the Congo River as his personal property. He named it the Congo Free

and plump, then, sell them as livestock to the rich to devour as an exquisite cuisine. Now, I m
not sure how modest this proposal is, but I m all for it! A human arm, fried with salt and pepper
sprinkled on top is not the typical meal you will see at the dinner table in the average American

Khmer Rouge Rebellion in the 70 s devoured the hearts and livers of their dead enemies on the
battlefield which is pretty extreme. However, there are some tribes who exercise non survival
cannibalism for deeper religious meanings. The Aghori tribe based in India is known for is
traditions. The clan covers their bodies in the ashes of the deceased and drink from the skulls of the
departed which they into bowls to become spiritually enlightened. Josh Clark, the Senior writer at
How Stuff Works, explains that some humans believe that certain parts of the body contain mystical
properties that can be transferred from one human to another through ingestion . These individuals
also believed strongly in the symbolic value of

  • 3. How Does L1 Support Literacy In L2 In this paper, I will discuss definitions of literacy, review research related to the transfer of literacy skills, and suggest practical applications of research findings of ways Linguistics (L1) support literacy in L2 for individuals learning English as a Second Language (ESL). Further, I will explore instructional practices implemented as L1 is transferred to L2 knowledgebase. As learning practices for L1 and L2 are outlined, cognates of L2 will be demonstrated in this paper for further understanding. In addition, L1 proficiency learners stem from individuals first language also known as their mother language. L1 can be described in four acquisition stages from the following: (1) babbling (2) one word (3) two word (4) string of words... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Literacy in L1 can support literacy in L2 in a variety of ways. Many researchers and practitioners in ESL/Bilingual Education or ESL/BE are aware of research evidence which supports such transfer, but research is not always applied to practice. According to Roberts (1994), literacy in L1 supports L2 by being able to transfer the teachings to L2 students. Research shows that knowledge of alphabets and awareness of phonological can an are strong predictors of literacy development in children being successful (Ford, K.2005). Lee Schaller s (1997) quantitative study examined the relationships between ELL students who demonstrated a level of proficiency compared to ELL students basic reading skills. The study (1997) tested two hypotheses to check reliability and validity; the hypotheses were examined from the following: (1) a foundation of language proficiency showed learners with below average levels in L2 proficiency showed little relationship between their L1 and L2 reading ability whereas learners with above average in L2 proficiency demonstrated a positive relationship between their L1 and L2 reading abilities.(b) The benefit of L2 proficiency was higher than the benefit of L1 reading ability in predicting L2 reading ability. In addition, Schaller Lee s (1997) study showed a correlation between the two hypotheses. For example, when L2 learners obtain previous knowledge from L1 experiences, their reading skills can potentially improve as information is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Diamond Foods Fraud Allegations of Diamond Foods Inc. s Understatement of Accounts Payable. Abstract On November 1, 2011, Diamond Foods Inc. s (NASDAQ: DMND) unexpectedly disclosed serious discrepancies (possible understatement of accounts payable) regarding its 2011 financial statement reports and as a result announced its decision to delay its acquisition of the Pringles snack business from Procter amp; Gamble Company (P amp;G) (NYSE: PG). Naturally, the November 1, 2011 confession caused an immediate plunge of Diamond Food s stock price, but worse, it triggered several lawsuits from furious investors and created rumors about the future viability of the company. The purpose of this study is to determine the facts and critically analyze the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The controversy lies with a payment made to farmers on September 2011, well after the end of Diamond s fiscal year closing, July 31, 2011. Diamond classified this particular payment to walnut farmers as a momentum payment of 30 to 40 cents per pound for the coming 2011 crop. However, the walnut farmers contend that the payment was really a way to compensate them for their 2010 crop payment deficiency. The walnut farmer s contention is very interesting. Essentially you can draw two scenarios from the information that has been provided so far: Scenario 1. The walnut farmers were indeed paid in full for their 2010 crop and the momentum payment was truly a pre payment for the farmer s 2011 crop. Scenario 2. Diamond insidiously understated 2011 accounts payable to walnut farmers as a way to bolster their 2011 net income. Potentially Fraudulent 2011 Financial Statements The remainder of this report will focus on scenario 2. So what s the big deal? Why would Diamond want to make their income statement look better? Recall the acquisition of Pringle chips from P amp;G When Diamond announced on April 2011 that it was going to acquire Pringle chips form P amp;G, its stock surged. Unfortunately, according to Andrejczak of MarketWatch magazine (2011, November 2), Diamonds decline in stock value from its high of $94 to a low ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Honor in No One Writes to the Colonel and Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Garcia Marquez Every culture in the world has its own unique set of values that they adhere to in life. The most important value to people is their honor. Honor is a very important factor in a person life that they will stop at nothing to make sure it is not lost. This endless pursuit of keeping honor can causes both positive and negative effects to a society. The Colonel and his wife consequently starve in order to maintain the honor given by the rooster. They conceal this humiliation of poverty by giving a false illusion of who they are to their neighbors. The Colonel believes that starvation is necessary as long as they are honorable to the liberal party and their son. The wife of the Colonel states I [place] stones on to boil so the neighbors wouldn t know that we often go with out food for days (159). The Colonel s wife feels humiliated that they have to live in poverty to maintain honor. In a moment of doubt the Colonel s wife states to the Colonel you can t eat dignity (160). Then the author uses a brief interruption in the setting to show incorrectness in the wife s comment. Garcia uses the interruption of lighting to show that what the wife said was wrong and that lying and maintaining their honor is the most important thing to do. This same idea that maintaining honor can cause a person to live a life of lies is seen in the novella Chronicle of a Death Foretold. The whole town covers up and lies about being involved and having any information about Santiago Nasar s death. Scoring a penalty kick looks like the easiest thing to do in sports. Just put the small ball through the big goal, and you score. But when you are standing in front of the goal, just you and the goalie, it gets a lot harder. • 8. The Worst Gun Atrocities Of Modern American History Essay The worst gun massacre in modern American history happened on April 16, 2007 at Virginia Tech. It started off as an ordinary Monday morning. Twenty three year old Seung Hui Cho moved methodically from classroom to classroom, shooting rapidly and randomly. When he was done, thirty two students and faculty members were dead; twenty five others were wounded. As the police closed in on him, he saved a final bullet for himself. The Virginia Tech shooter s choice of weapons were a 9 mm Glock 19 pistol and a .22 caliber Walther P22. Both guns were semiautomatic handguns purchased legally at stores. Cho had a long history of behavioral and emotional problems, and in 2005, a judge declared him mentally ill and a danger to himself and others. This information should have been adequate to prohibit him from purchasing a handgun, but Virginia did not have strict gun laws to prevent him from buying the guns. If Virginia had stricter gun laws, it might have been an ordinary Monday. Although the constitution says that right to bear arms should not be infringed recent times have showed us that that statement is a double edged sword. Increased gun control measures are needed to stop certain aspects that are being used as loopholes to avoid current laws. Supporters of more gun control laws state that the Second Amendment was intended for militias; that gun violence would be reduced; that gun restrictions have always existed; and that most Americans, including gun owners, support new gun ... However, if a wound or scar is not visible, does it make it any less real or devastating? The effects of emotional abuse are far reaching and overwhelming, and should therefore receive at least the same sensitivity and awareness, as physical abuse. The objective of this paper is to explore how the world s view of a women s role in leadershiphas evolved from the third century BCE to present day by examining the biblical understanding of leadership regarding Estherand Vashti through a historical, literary, and contemporary perspective. Leadership through a historical perspective Set in the Persian Empire of King Ahasuerus (486 465 BCE), the story of Esther reveals the defenselessness of women within an already vulnerable community of diasporic Jews (Leith, 2010, p. 709). In this society, women were the lowest members of the community, rarely had control of their own lives, and depended on the male relatives in the community to take care of them. One of the first responses from a reader of Beowulf is their surprise at Grendel s unnatural strength, one quality marking him as an evil character. Repeatedly throughout the poem, the diction surrounding Grendel leads to the picture of a terrible animal; one so horrifying only the imagination could create it. The first description of Grendel is one of a powerful monster (l. 23). This immediately creates imagery of a large, vicious animal. Also, throughout the story, Grendel only appears at night, as would a nocturnal hunting animal. Traditionally, the evil creatures of the earth and fiction commit their evil deeds during the night. Then, when darkness had dropped (l. 52 53), when the night hid him (l. 104), and through the cloudy night (l. 367), are only several of many instances that illustrate Grendel s hunting habits, those of an animal. The sheer terror this night haunting, animalistic creature rages on the Danes is such that only a force of true evil could produce it, once again showing Grendel as the epic evil character in Beowulf. A fact that seems quite obvious, but is commonly overlooked, is the evil character s alienation from society. Examples Of Inequities In Aboriginal Health As health professionals, we must look beyond individual attributes of Indigenous Australians to gain a greater understanding and a possible explanation of why there are such high rates of ill health issues such as alcoholism, depression, abuse, shorter life expectancy and higher prevalence of diseases including diabetes, heart disease and obesity in our indigenous population. Looking at just the individual aspects and the biomedical health model, we don t get the context of Aboriginal health. This is why we need to explore in further detail what events could have created such inequities in Aboriginal health. Other details that we should consider are the historical and cultural factors such as, terra nullius , dispossession and social... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It was this day that was the start of a long dark history of cruelty and ill treatment towards the traditional custodians of Australia. Under the terra nullius law, the Aboriginals lost their land, which is now known as dispossession. To justify this dispossession, the English followed the set of beliefs that are now identified as social Darwinism. Social Darwinism, with its powerful racially based doctrines, ranked Indigenous Australians as inferior to Europeans and provided a rationale for dispossession by drawing on the laws of natural selection to justify the inevitable extinction of Indigenous Australians in the face of the arrival of the superior white race (Psychology and Indigenous Australians, Foundations of Cultural Competence, 2009, pp. 75). By having their land taken away from them, the Aboriginals lost part of their spiritual connection and their sense of belonging and identity because Aboriginal culture is based heavily on the spirits of the land. These connections that bonded the Aboriginals to the land were never understood by the English settlers, who only saw the land as possible income (Psychology and Indigenous Australians, Foundations of Cultural Competence, 2009.). They also lost a lot of their sacred areas, spiritual areas and meeting places because they were on the land that the white people had divided and fenced of the land that these areas were on and if an Aboriginal was trying to ... Gone was the hourglass figure of the 19th Century, swept away by the World War I, and replaced by the figure of a modern, independent woman. This book covers fashions from 1920 to 1924, an often overlooked period of fashion which was a time of transition between the draped and layered fashions of the post World War I era and the free and easy gowns of the jazz age flapper . Before the Roaring Twenties, women were still wearing floor length dresses with corsets, and crinolines, arms and legs were covered, hair was long. This Gibson girl look was set the standard for beauty, fashion and manner. And the Victorian attitudes toward dress and etiquette created a strict moral climate. Until 1920s things changed quickly, the women was given the right to vote, they began to attend college. The Equal Rights Amendment was proposed in 1923. The World War I was over and men wanted their jobs back. Women, though, who had taken up men s jobs while they were at war, had proved themselves worthy of men s jobs, so many organizations and feminist reformers took up the task to encourage gender equality. Many important things happened in the 1920 s like prohibition and jazz music. Something that is also very significant is that this was the decade where fashion began entering a modern era. Messages are delivered via symbols amongst other factors such as speech, written documents, etc. They help an individual assign meaning to the society around them. With that, a message can mean multiple things depending on the listeners and how it is conveyed. In my case, as a Communication major, I have learned about messages via speechgiving, readings from Communication textbooks, and in class notes. This is a principal and agent relationship because the client is delegating its authority to the lawyer. The lawyer ends up being the agent who has received authority from the principal to handle the issue that the principal is requesting. The client gives authority to the lawyer because the client does not have the necessary knowledge to handle a matter that requires additional knowledge. The lawyer will be the representative of the client who has no background in legal cases. Clenching teeth, defined facial bone structure and fine dentistry; the title of Steven Spielberg s classic film Jaws paints quite a mental picture for its viewers with many possibilities. Along with the title, the original film poster used to promote Jaws was visually colorful and terrifying all at the same time. The poster indicates an oversized great white sharklurking in the dark depths of the sea, looking up towards the surface at a swimmer. Waiting and watching, the imagery of the poster gives the viewer the feeling that the shark is waiting for just the right moment to attack with its powerful bone crushing jaws. What makes this film so interesting and captivating is that for over half of Spielberg s film the protagonist, the shark, is nowhere to be seen. The way Steven Spielberg incorporates and mixes powerful and suspenseful music with his brilliant editing of the film, as well as the composition, allows viewers to believe there is an actual shark, even though the shark is out of sight. Steven Spielberg s film Jaws was influenced and inspired by the fictional novel Jaws written by Peter Benchley. With a few changes to better the cinematography, the film portrayed the novel and followed its outline very closely. Jaws the film had become America s very first blockbuster hit (Quarterly). • 37. Theme Of The Moon In A Midsummer Night Dream The sun is a constant in our lives. We wake up to it faithfully rising on the horizon. We enjoy its unceasing warmth and energy throughout the day before falling asleep after it sets. With night passing quickly, we take no notice of the moon that resides in place of the sun. However, it is this unnoticed moonthat more accurately mirrors our perception of time and the phases in our lives. William Shakespeare realized this about the moon. In his play, A Midsummer s Night Dream, he uses the motif of the moon to symbolize both time and the phases in our lives just as he does through the characters of the play. Shakespeare conveys the passage of time through the character of Theseus early on in the play. Theseus, referencing the moon, expresses his distaste for how slow time is passing by saying in line 2: Another moon: but, O, methinks, how slow this old moon wanes! she lingers my desires, like to a step dame or a dowager long withering out a young man revenue (AMND 1.1.3 6.) Theseus is dissatisfied because he wants to be with his fiance, Hippolyta, now rather than waiting for the moon to wane. However, Hippolyta reassuringly replies to Theseus in line 8, that Four days will quickly steep themselves in night; Four nights will quickly dream away the time; And then the moon, like to a silver bow new bent in heaven, shall behold the night of our solemnities (1.1.7 11). Hippolyta, also referring to the moon, is telling Theseus that soon enough the time will be here for them to be together. Another example of the moon representing time can be seen when Theseus is speaking to Hermia about who she will marry and how she will obey her father s commands. Take time to pause; and, by the nest new moon The sealing day betwixt my love and me, (1.1.85 87). Here again, Shakespeare uses the motif of the moon to represent time and effectively shows how his characters live their lives around it. Shakespeare also uses the idea of moon phases to symbolize both the difficulties and the good fortunes in one s life. For example, Shakespeare relates the darkness of the moon to the difficult life of a nun and the difficult decision that Hermia must make. In Lines 70 78, Theseus declares to Hermia, Whether, if ... In Bakke v Regents of the University of California, we have a landmark reverse discrimination case that influenced education as a whole. Bakke was rejected from graduate school even though he had superior scores than many of the African American applicants who were admitted. Bakke challenged the University of California and overturned the quota system that had been established in public universities across the nation. The University of California held on to the belief that black people should have access to black doctors. However, if the University were to go on a sole merit system then the number of special admittees would diminish along with the aforementioned belief. This belief was quickly altered by the Supreme Court with their decision against the University. While the approach the Courts use is meant to be color blind, the outcome is anything but color blind. As a new century began to evolve, many European powers aggressively decide to surmount their power in many parts of Africa. More specifically, King Leopold s journey to conquer the Congo and exploit the lucrative rubber/ivory market accurately describes the forced efforts of tyranny. King Leopold s Ghost by Adam Hochschild explains the propaganda remunerated by people in favor and opposition of King Leopold s conquest. It also features the contributions of journalists and writers in relation to Leopold colonizing the Congo through means of propaganda, missionaries, use of other countries, and other various other methods to end his rule and change the common perceptions of imperialism. The main goal, however, of writers in the Congo, was to let the world know of Leopold s actions and to end his selfish ruling. The role of journalists became most prevalent beginning in the 1880 s. In 1885, under the pretense of philanthropy, King Leopold II Belgium claimed land along the Congo River as his personal property.
