Foreign Language Assimilation Paper
In a worldwide scale, Spanish is one of the most spoken languages in the world today. According to
the United States Census Bureau, Orange County inhabits approximately 770, 513 Spanish speakers in
Southern California, compared to about 3,948 Spanish speakers in Kent County, Rhode Island in 2016
( Language Spoken at Home ). Comparing the West Coast county from the East Coast, Spanish
speakers retain their language despite the population gap between two separate sites of the U.S. Yet,
the language use may become a community language rather than a foreign language as it is introduced
by immigrants. Located on the south of the United States, there are possibly around 130,680,414
Mexican Spanish speakers since 2018 ( Mexico Population ). Despite ... Show more content on

Some immigrants have trouble adapting to a new lifestyle because of limited resources. Yet, other
immigrants who did not have much of a difficult time were able to integrate Spanish into a new
society. For instance, Areli Martinez, a Mexican immigrant studying Psychology at UCLA, moved to
the U.S. with her family in pursuit of better quality of life did not experience much difficulty in
adjusting. From an email interview (see email interview above), she mentions her experiences as a
Spanish speaker in California. Although it was not difficult for Martinez to adjust, her implications
included language barriers and weak cultural values (see email response below). Due to language
barriers and lack of cultural values, Martinez struggled with grammar and placing her thoughts on
paper when she was younger, but she was later able to persevere in learning English from cultural
diversity and freedom to create her own values. Further, she also realizes that importance of Spanish
in both the U.S. and Mexico (Martinez). With regards to the historical roots of Spanish, the Western
hemisphere have benefited from the monopolization of this language because it brings cultural and
linguistic ties from a global perspective. Through Spanish, immigrants obtain a sense of identity in a
heterogeneous nation and benefit from it as an emerging

Similarities And Differences Between Robert E. Lee
General War
It no secret that General Ulysses S. Grant and General Robert E. Lee had their differences. Ranging
from appearance to actions they hardly shared any similarities. This makes them both easily
comparable. Both had their ups and their downs, but in the end, General Robert E. Lee was the best
general overall.
Let us start somewhere easy, let us start with their appearances. Lee stood at a 5 ft. 11 in., weighing
175 lbs., and Grant stood under him at 5ft. 7 in., weighing 140 lbs. While Lee was compared in size to
the great Abraham Lincoln, it has been said that Grant had to stand on a stool just to address other
soldiers. As for their attire Lee was always seen in a perfect uniform. His jacket pressed, complete
with a sash, general s sword, hat, white gloves, and shined boots. Grant on the other hand always look
disheveled. He wore a simple private s uniform with general insignia added on, complete with a jacket
that looked slept in. Many people accredit this look saying that His mind was too busy on winning the
war than on looking presentable. His personal account of how he came to this shows more, I was
impatient to get on my uniform and see how it looked, and probably wanted my old school mates,
particularly the girls, to see me in it. The conceit was knocked out of me by two little circumstances
that happened soon after the arrival of the clothes, which gave me a distaste for military uniform that I
never recovered from. Being presentable was something

Disadvantages Of Free Range Parenting
Free range parenting is a type of way to help a kids early, young, and adolescent stages of their life
with their skills and abilities as well as for teaching them how to be self supportive and to learn how to
become a responsible young adult to be a better prepared for the future. In free range parenting their is
no specific way of raising your child due to the fact that their can be several methods but what i do
think is that their should be only one way when it comes to parenting. Free range parenting of course
can and may have many negative but also many positive outcomes as well depending on the type of
technique the set of parents are using and by the way their kids are being raised and treated over the
years of their teen life. Every set of parents have their own technique, tactic, or method when it comes
to parenting but at times the way they do it isn t the correct one to utilize at a child s young age. The
three types of free range parenting methods that their is are the Abusive or neglectful parents, the
prepared developmentally parents, and finally the helicopter type of parents. An extreme kind
parenting parent is an abusive or neglectful type of way that some children get from the parents since
they don t get or receive enough support, help, and assistance from their parents. A prepared
developed set of parents are the type of parents that most people prefer because they re responsible
enough to give their child enough aid and assistance that may help and

Home Depot Financial Analysis
Overview Office Depot, Inc. ( Office Depot ), a supplier of a broad assortment of office products and
business services throughout the United States and worldwide, announced on February 20, 2013 a
merger agreement with OfficeMax, Inc., which will better equip them to compete in the rapidly
changing industry. In fiscal year 2012 alone, Office Depot generated $10.7 billion of revenues from its
products and services, yet industry reviews of this company seem unfavorable. In this FSA Case

What s worse, the primary sources of cash flow from operations were depreciation and assets
impairment instead of net income. The increase in cash flow from investing activities, also in Figure 7,
indicates that although the company continued to make investments in 2012, it had cut the amount
dramatically. As a result, the investments might not be able to fit its needs for sustainable
development. Overall, Office Depot s solvency condition in the past three years has not been
satisfactory. Figure 7: Cash Flow by Activities (in thousands) Operating Efficiency Analysis As a
measure of operating efficiency, Office Depot s ROA was incredibly low. The ROA in 2011 was only
0.8% and went all the way down to 1.9% in 2012, as shown in Figure 8, which demonstrates that
management did a poor job in generating productivity from employing the firm s resources. Figure 8:
Return on Assets Considering that the industry s average ROA was as high as 8.3%, a negative ROA is
not acceptable for most companies. Given its cost of capital was 11.78% in 2012, the ROA of 1.9%
indicates that the earnings of Office Depot was not able to cover its financing cost so that its
performance was far from adequate in 2012. Based on the DuPont Equation in Figure 9, ROA is the
product of ROS and assets turnover, both of which have declined in 2012 for Office Depot. Its assets

Essay on You Never Thought You Had to Think to Count
You Never Thought You Had to Think to Count
It was after taking the 2nd MOEMS (Math Olympiad Elementary and Middle School) that I heard this
phrase from my school s math coach. We had sat and taken this test for 26 minutes, and then
afterwards ALWAYS talked about the problems. It came up when looking at a problem that went
somewhat like this: Each student in an art class is given 48 cubes that measure 1cm x 1cm x 1cm. No
students make the same design. What is the largest possible amount of students in that class? I was so
close! I answered eight, when in fact, the answer was nine! Everything was right about my strategy,
thinking, and what I did, but I had missed one of the figures. That is what I am getting to; that is what

Did I miss one? Did I count one twice? All the things that go through your head... But, but, but, bu one
might think. There is algebra, and calculus, and... and... and...! Yes, but there is also counting in other
base systems. Ever heard of that? This is page 10 of this chapter! You can count in any base system at
all. Almost everyone uses base system ten. Hypothetically speaking, if you were to say I want to count
in base system three! You tell you friend you are going to count to seven so they know when to start
the race. The number seven in base system three is twenty one. So you would count like this: 1, 2, 10,
11, 12, 20, 21! When you are about to say three, the tens digit goes up one. The only possible units
digits when counting in base three are 0, 1, and 2. Here is how you figure it out using a quick shortcut.
Three goes into seven twice (2_) with one remainder, so it turns into 21. It seems pretty simple, but in
reality, it is not.
Counting began with the simple action of putting marks on a bone. Numbers, and counting, began
about 4,000 BC in Sumeria one of the earliest civilizations. Also, algorithm I guess you could say;
started with chickens...? Well, not really. Their method of counting began as a series of tokens. [...] If a
man had five chickens he was given five tokens. When he traded or killed one of his chickens, one of
his tokens was removed. It also seems like the people who

Women In Postclassical China
During the Postclassical era, which spanned from 500 and 1450 C.E, the roles of women in China and
Japan experienced change, as well as continuity. China and Japan both experienced several stages of
change, from arranged marriages and not being allowed to participate in government, to more freedom
in marriage and property rights and becoming priestess and empresses. Continuities in this time
included a strict patriarchal society and practices such as foot binding that remained throughout an
entire dynasty.
China displayed continuity as well as change between 500 C.E. 1450 C.E. A patriarchal society (the
order of society with Men higher than women, and Fathers higher than sons) continued, and had a
heavy connotation with Confucianism. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Within Shintoism women held power as mikos, a type of shaman with mystical abilities. Before the
8th century, half of Japan s reigning female rulers were believed to have shaman like powers. Japan s
sun goddess Amaterasu was also worshiped as a symbol of female mystical power. Every emperor has
had to claim direct descendancy from Amaterasu. Her Great Shrine at Ise, cared for by high
priestesses, played an important role in the lives of the Japanese people. The more positive influences
of Shintoism were weakened by the rise of the samurai culture and by the spread of Confucianism as
well as Buddhism. Yet, in the Heian era (950 1050 C.E.) women still held relative equity in marriage,
education, and property rights. Gender difference in this period favored more towards literate women
who were free to write in the expressive, popular language, while men most often wrote in the more
formal and classical Chinese. Women s independence limited during the long centuries of the

The Importance Of Birth Control
Louise Slaughter, a New York congresswoman, once wrote, for most women, including women who
want to have children, contraception, is not an option, it is a basic health care necessity . In other
words, Slaughter believes that for many women, no matter their decision on child bearing,
contraceptives are are essential to their health. In short, contraception is just as important as a routine
check up with a primary doctor. Furthermore, birth control serves more than one purpose;
contraception controls if or when women reproduce but is also used to treat medical conditions, such
as, endometriosis, and irregular menstruation. Although, the first birth control clinic was opened in
Brooklyn, New York in 1916 by Margaret Sanger, the fight for reproductive freedom and the complete
legalization of contraception would not end until the 1960s. Merely ten days after opening the clinic,
Sanger and employees were arrested for breaking the Comstock Law. The Comstock Law, which was
passed in 1873, prohibited and restricted advertisements and sales of information, and materials, that
could be used as contraception. Although the odds were against her in the fight for legal birth control,
Sanger reopened the clinic; however, Sanger was arrested a second time and was charged with
maintaining a public nuisance according to the Margaret Sanger Paper Project. Regardless of being
arrested twice before, Sanger reopened the clinic a third time. Consequently, the police forced Sanger

American Football Enforcing Rules
Are the NFL and NCAA enforcing rules that make American football TOO safe? Over the years these
organizations have gradually changed the way football is being played. The changes have mostly been
made to keep players safe and make the game less violent. With all these rule changes some people
think it is taking the fun away from the game. American Football has become a sport that is classified
as too soft compared to what it used to be. The way football is played has been thoroughly changed
over the years. Football used to be a sport where the defense was much more involved in many
different scenarios and stops. Nowadays you cannot tackle aiming for the chest, head, or just a
defenseless player in general, leading with the helmet of your gear. This rule is called targeting, and it
was implemented to the game in 2013. Many players and coaches believe that this rule has made
tackling too beneficial for the offense, as well as giving them a very safe field to play on. Since
football has been changed to become more of a game that the offense controls, there has been much
more scoring. Scoring gets the offense on each team on and off the field ... Show more content on

Since all these new rules are being enforced a number of times a referee calls a penalty in each game
has increased. Many people believe this makes the game less exciting because there aren t as many big
hits on offensive players in each game, something that the crowd would stand up and cheer for.
Generally, this slows down the defense giving them a much harder task in stopping the offense and is
disliked by many players. Players and coaches agree that referees call a penalty on almost any hard
hitting tackle, so the players are now being taught and coached differently than before. This alters their
playing style, keeping the game much safer. Referees have been calling too many penalties which are
resulting in games that are too

PBIS
Understanding Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and managing student behavior
is an imperative part of all educator responsibility. Starting in the 1980s (Simonsen, 2012), it was
obvious that better, more efficient ways of connecting with students with behavioral challenges was
needed. A form of intervention that went beyond the standard, or traditional means of being sent out of
class, a phone call home which may have led to punishments that escalated the behaviors instead of
working through them, or even being put on suspension which most likely heighten the stress and
allowed for little to no resolution of the behavioral challenges the student(s) was going through. PBIS
is not just for the special needs children of today; the original need was identified to help the special
needs population and has since found its importance throughout most school systems as a general
practice (Simonsen, 2012).
PBIS is referred to as a framework where the emphasis is on a process or approach, rather than a
curriculum, intervention, or practice (Simonsen, 2012). This framework has grown into schools and
has brought with it numerous professional development to help aide the educators and assistance for

Othello Illusion Vs Reality Essay
Every day we are constantly meeting new people and with meeting new people comes new
personalities. Some may be our friend while others may be hypocritical. But at the end true colors are
revealed. Illusion verses reality is one of the many themes expressed in Othello by William
Shakespeare. There are many examples shown through the character Othello where the misconception
of illusion and reality leads to misfortune. This is displayed when Othello develops an outrageous
jealousy due to Iago manipulating him, or when there s irrelevant hatred created between Othello and
Cassio because of these manipulations. When Iago s schemes work it fools Othello s gullible
personality, resulting in him doubting his love for Desdemona. William Shakespeare ... Show more

Due to Iago s perception of Othello being naïve, Iago uses his phenomenal understanding of the
human psyche as his ability to orchestrate pre planned scenarios. Iago is successfully and carefully
able to manipulate Othello s thoughts into thinking Desdemona has been unfaithful and that it was
false love. I called my love false love, but what he said then? (IV, iii, 59) This is significant because
Desdemona is beginning to realize that the love Othello had for her must have been false she s worried
that Othello will leave her. Due to Othello s inability to differentiate between delusion and reality it s
bringing forth disaster leading to their relationship suffering. Othello being able to trust people easily
allowed Iago s words to manipulate him into making a tremendously poor decision which was killing
Desdemona. Put out the light, and then put out the light, (V,ii, 7) This quote is paramount because
Othello blows out the candle just before he strangles Desdemona which symbolizes Desdemona s
fragile life and because he is so manipulated by Iago there is no turning back and he is ready to kill
her. Othello muses that the difference between Desdemona s life and a candle s light is that he can put
out and relight the candle but he cannot bring Desdemona back to life. The thought of not being able
to bring Desdemona back to life did not stop him from murdering Desdemona,

The Napoleonic Er The Causes Of The Napoleonic Era
The Napoleonic Era can be said to have begun with the Coup of 18 Brumaire, which overthrew the
Directory (and is often believed to have brought the French Revolution to a close), and established the
French Consulate, along with the appointment of Napoleon as First Consul in the winter of 1779.
Preceding this time, the French were fighting a loosing battle against the Ottomans throughout Egypt,
Greater Syria, and the Levant. Once Napoleon became the de facto ruler of France, he began massive
reforms. The spread of citizens rights into law began, representative assembly took hold, religious
toleration became the norm, the country was re organized into departments, and the metric system was
invented. Upon becoming First Consul, Napoleon established ... Show more content on

The Metropolitan Museum Of Art Essay
Positioned alongside Central Park within the heart of New York City, The Metropolitan Museum of
Art is one of the largest and most influential art museums in the world. The Met houses an extensive
collection of curated works that spans throughout various time periods and different cultures. The
context of museums, especially one as influential as the Met, inherently predisposes its visitors to a set
of understandings that subtly influence how they interpret and ultimately construct meanings about
each individual object within a museum. By analyzing two separate works on exhibit at the Met, I will
pose the argument that museums offer a unique expression of a world view that is dictated through
every element of its construction.
An object placed on display behind a glass case inside a museum would hold a vastly different
meaning if it were for sale by a street vendor, such as the individuals who set up their tables only a
few feet away from the Met. Brent Plate in Religion, Art, and Visual Culture argues that objects obtain
different meanings in different locations and historical settings. The different meanings that objects are
able to obtain is attributed to the relationships that are established between the object itself and the
environment that it is located in. These relationships often involve the kind of audience that a museum
attracts, where the work is exhibited, and how the exhibit is laid out. Museums subsequently have the

Karen Armstrong
The book, In the Beginning, by Karen Armstrong follows the first book of the Bible, Genesis. It
unfolds some very well known stories in Genesis. Armstrong goes through each of the stories of
Genesis and interprets what each story is about and how we can relate it to our own lives. The book of
Genesis can be difficult to understand and it holds many mysteries within it, but with the help of
Karen Armstrong, we are able to understand the stories of Genesis and what they mean.
This is the story of the Bible s first book, raw and unchurched. Karen introduces us one by one to the
characters and their stories, making no effort to turn them into saints, for they are nothing like the
impossibly and depressingly flawless characters we met in Sunday School. Throughout, the authors of
Genesis remind us that we can expect no clear cut answers. We wrestle with the text, measuring its
inconsistent doctrines and contradictory lessons, as we struggle to grasp the character of God. How
can God be omnipotent, but powerless to control his creation? How can God be benevolent but a
killer; wise but arbitrary; just but partial and unfair; omniscient but ignorant of human yearning?

The Effects of Sociocultural Factors on Individuals Essay
Swami Nirmalananda, a disciple of the Indian mystic Ramakrishna, once said Our modern society is
engaged in polishing and decorating the cage in which man is kept imprisoned. Society is seen as a
cage by many because the cultural beliefs that make up the society are what guide the actions and
behaviors of those people within. Sometimes the culture in societies result in helping people develop
successfully and positively, but this is not always the case. For instance, societies that were challenged
by racism during the mid twentieth century were marked by rage and were the causes of some
troublesome lives. In two short stories set during the mid twentieth century, Sonny s Blues, by James

support or being cared for by family members is invaluable, but Sonny did not have this and it
ultimately resulted in one of the reasons for his troubled life. In Richard Wright s short story The Man
Who Was Almost a Man the main character, Dave Saunders, also faces a problem which can be
similarly traced to sociocultural factors. While shooting his gun for the first time Dave accidentally
shoots his boss , Mr. Hawkins, mule, and the mule dies. The only reason Dave purchased a gun in the
first place was to prove to the others in society, specifically those who worked alongside him at Mr.
Hawkins plantation, that he was not a boy anymore, but rather a man. While working on Mr. Hawkins
plantation Dave is often humiliated by the older workers because they think [he] ain t nothing but a
boy (878). Also, the narrator states near the end of the story that a group of people that has gathered
around the dead mule on the plantation laughs at Dave as he is walking away with tear filled eyes
(886). Once again this emphasizes that he receives no respect from the others. Mr. Hawkins plantation
is similar to the social environment in Harlem described in Sonny s Blues . Both

Queen Matilda Of England And The Marriage Table A Dowry Of...
Queen Matilda of England brought to the marriage table a dowry of estates. While, she did not grant
William great wealth, she did possess great wealth of her own. Roughly one fourth of the wealth of
Matilda and William belonged to Matilda. She presented her husband with the ship the Mora as a
symbol of her approval of his conquest of England. Matilda, being well educated and capable, served
as regent of Normandy while her husband was away in England. Matilda made the journey to England
in 1068 where she was crowned Queen of England. Matilda, like many queens of her time, actively
participated in government. Roughly one hundred charters bear Matilda s name, suggesting that she
occasionally maintained full responsibility of Normandy in her husband s absence. Matilda became a
wealthy landowner in England, where she held lands in the counties of Surrey, Hampshire, Wiltshire,

The Round House By Louise Erdrich
Survivance is a term that is used in Native American studies and it includes two important terms:
survival and resistance . Survivance refers to an active sense of presence and in native stories, natural
reason, active traditions, customs, narrative resistance, and clearly observable in personal attributes,
such as humor, spirit, cast of mind, and moral courage (Vizenor). It allows them to transform their
experiences of historical trauma into courage, forgiveness, and healing through political activism and
cultural revitalization (sfsu).Vizenor defines this term in opposition to victimry and it is more than just
survival for the Native Americans, but as self reliant perseverance through all the hardships that had
presented themselves such as the forced assimilation into the white community and culture. Instead of
losing their roots, the Native Americans were able to hold on to their historical culture and traditions
and were so much more than mere survival.
The Round House, written by Louise Erdrich is a fictional novel that focuses on a Chippewa family in
a North Dakota Indian reservation. The story is written from the perspective of a young man, Joe
Coutts, who is the son of a tribal judge, Bazil Coutts, and his mother, Geraldine, who was brutally
raped by a white man, Lindin Lark, in a savage act of vengeance. After this violent act, Joe s mother
spirals into solidarity and becomes closed off to the point where she is unable to leave her room. This

Descriptive Essay About The Cafe
The cafe is a short jaunt from our apartment, a splendid notion to someone who would rather spend
the entire day hiding in her bedroom. Adorned in our jeans, thick hoodies and jackets, we braved the
frigid weather. As soon as we departed from the building, Alice deemed it necessary to add restraints
by the use of her arm linked within mine. As we enter the cafe, the clatter of dishes and a low din of
chatter penetrates my ears, while the scent of pastries mingled with fried food imbues my nostrils. The
warm air saturates my clothing, filling me with gratitude to be out of the cold. Beside me, Alice
flattens her windswept hair as she searches for a free table. A smug smile caresses my lips. Before we
left, I tied my hair back in a messy bun to prevent the menacing wind from ravaging my hair. As I
scrutinise the cafe, I observe patrons occupy each of the cream leathered booths. As my gaze drifts
over to the counter, no stools are available to us. A glimmer of hope materialises. What a shame, we ll
have to go home where I can return to my solitude. However, Alice obliterates that hope the moment
she says, There s a free table at the back. Come on. We slide along opposite benches beside the wide
window that allows the grey sky to filter in. After shedding from my jacket, I rest my hands on the
stainless steel table and interlock my fingers, and observe Alice as she continues to tackle with her
matted hair. Though bumpy, she did manage to tame it enough to tie back into a

Scarlet Letter Brooding Romanticism
At the end of chapter 5, it is evident that Hester is more of a brooding Romantic; she has a tragic
confrontation with the universe around her, she isolates herself and becomes paranoid, and she
develops a dark outlook of her scarlet letter by associating it with Hell. After experiencing an extreme
amount of public humiliation, it is no surprise that Hester Prynne may think negatively about her
reality in Boston. Hester s negative outlook, a characteristic that can be credited to her broodingly
romantic personality, is clearly evident within the end of chapter 5. The cause of this negative outlook
is due to a tragic confrontation that she experiences with the world around her. She looks beyond her
own sins and has a sudden realization that in fact anyone has the ability to transgress just as easily as
she did. Hester is terror stricken by the revelations of knowing that others sin. The fact that she is
terror stricken suggests that she is now looking at the world around her in a way she never previously
had. Hester is overwhelmed with terror to realize that people are genuinely immoral. This scene
highlights a major concept of brooding romanticism: a character having a tragic confrontation with the

In the final paragraph, those with vulgar minds are credited with contributing grotesque horror to their
conception of the scarlet letter. However, this grotesque horror is not so grotesque after all. Hawthorne
reveals that the scarlet letter being a symbol of infernal fire is more of a reality for Hester than an
actual rumor. Associating the scarlet letter with something infernal implies that it can be connected to
the idea of Hell. This yields a very dark and dire perspective of reality for Hester, and the connection
of Hester to Hell through the scarlet letter epitomizes the brooding Romantic inside of

Beowulf And Gilgamesh Essay
Comparative English Essay
Compare the Beowulf poet s presentation of the battles with Grendel and his mother with the
Gilgamesh poet s depiction of Gilgamesh battles with Huwawa and the Bull of Heaven.
Fame and glory have been the most admirable characteristics in the middle Ages and even before
Christ in the ancient civilizations. The epics of Gilgamesh and Beowulf are stories of heroism and
immortality gained through fame. The aim of the main characters, Beowulf and Gilgamesh, is to be a
good warrior by being courageous, respectful and prudent, a protector and servant to their king (only
in the beginning of Beowulf, as he later becomes king and Gilgamesh already is) and their country. In
both poems the fights of the main ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This was the place the guardian demon guarded (p. 25, line 12 ff.). Even though the forest is
dangerous, still and full of shadows, it is inversely also described as beautiful and full of confusion
and noise: There was the noise of swords, daggers and axes, confusions of noises in the Cedar forest.
This is how nature is: wild, dangerous, unpredictable but also beautiful. And this is also how Huwawa
s home and therefore also himself is described. This image of Huwawa being representative for nature
is straightened by Shamash s interfering to help Gilgamesh fighting Huwawa, Seven terrors are
Huwawa s garments. The aura of Huwawa is the terrors. Helpless is the one who enters the Cedar
Forest wears the seven. (p.25, line 6ff.), by raising up thirteen storms to beat against the face of the
aura of the demon Huwawa, beating their tempest feet off the earth wide open, splitting the mountains,
( ) Gilgamesh was able to get at him (p.27, line 14ff.). As Huwawa then realizes that he is
overwhelmed, he offers himself as a servant for Uruk, but Enkidu, who himself is a child of the
wilderness, but now got civilized by Gilgamesh, insists on killing Huwawa. On the one side this is
strange as Enkidu is also wild, like Huwawa, but Enkidu entered the social life of a civilized nation
and adapted its standards. Huwawa is wild and can t protect a cultured nation; therefore he must die to
let civilization win. The wood of the Cedar Forest that is used for new city gates also shows

The Necessity of Personal Responsibility Essay
Personal responsibility may be perceived in many ways, but it is imperative to understand the
relevance of why it must begin with our self. First, one will never develop an attitude of responsibility
if they always look for others to complete their task. It is a necessity that one has personal discipline
or their efforts to be responsible will prove to be fruitless. Second, being responsible yields great
rewards and acting responsible is a clear sign of maturity. A responsible individual looks to no one but
self and no matter what the outcome; they are willing to stand by their decisions. (Maltby 2009),
Personal responsibility is concerned with people taking individual accountability for their decisions
and actions, together with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Personal responsibility may yield many rewards. For example, Mary s entry level position at Trump
Towers was administrative assistant. During a period of one year, Mary validated her worth by
working overtime and always volunteering to help with other projects. As Mary continued to flourish
in completing her assignments, she was elevated from administrative assistant to executive director of
the accounting department. There are many levels of maturity, but maturity is a process that students
develop over a period of time. Consequently, the student that matures quickly is likely to initiate an
educational plan that will increase their academic success. One preliminary plan that a student can
design to achieve academic success is goal setting. Goal setting allows the student to define their
academic goals and to devise a plan that will accommodate their collegiate career. One way to make
goals effective is to examine them up close. (Ellis, p. 70,2011) Prior to this point we established
several factors to confirm the necessity of personal responsibility, but here we will interject effective
strategies that a student must use to generate success in their chosen field of study. Research and
observation reveals that the most successful students are accountable, but also have a strong
determination to apply practical concepts to achieve their academic goals. The successful student
operates in congruence between faculty and

Hunterdon County Essay
Hunterdon county is a New Jersey is not known for much. It has about twenty seven towns and is
located in central New Jersey. There are no big cities or any sports teams. It is mostly a rural county
with tons of farms and woods. There is not much to do for the younger generation. Everything is a
good drive away. For me the beach, New York City, and Philadelphia are all about a one hour drive
away from me. Many people leave Hunterdon after college because they want to start their lives and
these maps are showing that many chose not to do that in Hunterdon. If you look on map one it is

Maybe all the people wanted to leave Hunterdon to find better jobs. For the towns that are really dark
in map four got hired right out of college and have enough money to live in Hunterdon but for the
towns that had a lot of jobs in map three but got worse in map four they could have found better jobs
somewhere else or maybe it just did not work out. I know from living there that it is not the cheapest
place to live. It is the fourth most expensive county in the nation and with college being so expensive,
people are not making enough right out of college to live in Hunterdon. The difference between the
two maps is insane. If you look at all four of these maps it makes sense that people all these people are
leaving. If you are fifteen you are obviously still going to be living with your parents and when you
just get out of college you will still live with them until you get enough money and have to move out.

Confederate Flag Essay
A Confederate battle flag once flew over the statehouse of South Carolina. The flag was hoisted above
the building in 1961, amid the era of social equality reforms. After over 50 years of being flown above
the statehouse, the flag was removed on July 10, 2015. According to the New York Times: The final
vote in the State House of Representatives, 94 to 20, was well above the two thirds majority required
to move the bill to the desk of Gov. Nikki R. Haley, a Republican who called for the flag to come

Charleston. Indisputably, a great tragedy was inflicted upon the people of Charleston, South Carolina.
Indisputably, nine innocent people were murdered in a prayer service on the evening of June 17, 2015.
The suspected perpetrator of this massacre is twenty one year old, and South Carolina native, Dylan

Confederacy was formed in opposition to the abolition of the institution of slavery. The Confederates

Poverty In Poverty
Poverty is very widespread and touches the lives of millions of Americans. Through the speeches of
Russell Conwell (Acres of Diamonds 1915) and Samuel Gompers (What does the working man want?
1890) we see through their eyes how each man feels about this topic. Being in poverty is something
that none of us want for ourselves. Even though we try our best sometimes it is something that is out
of our hands and something we can t avoid. Conwell s philosophy is in many ways aligned with the
foundations of Social Darwinism. He believes that it is our duty to work hard and earn our wealth. A
wealthy person is deemed an honest man, because he does the work and doesn t rely on someone else
to do it for him. The survival of the fittest has been proven by the fact that those who are poor were
not willing to try and work or just didn t have what it takes to overcome the odds and were pushed off
to the side. The fittest were willing to work and overcome the odds by hard work or figuring out ways
to bypass the obstacles that were standing in their way. For example, Conwell speaks of the man who
began whittling toys for his children and became a millionaire. He used what he had around him and a
skill he had to become successful. Also, Conwell speaks of the man who went off to foreign lands
looking for diamonds instead of continuing to work hard on his farm. Had he done so he would have
been the one to find the diamonds right there on his own land. Samuel Gompers sees that the poor face
many difficulties and are treated like a machine instead of a man, because of the long hours he must
work. He believes by shortening work days that men are more likely to do more outside of work to
better themselves and that they will be more productive at work as well in their personal lives. He
feels that politicians and college professors take advantage of workers because of the amount of men
and women who are looking for work which allows them to pay them less in wages and force them to
work long hours in unsafe working environments. Gompers wanted employers to see these mean and
woman who are searching for jobs as human beings not as just another cog in the wheel of the labor
movement. For example, the mention of a man who works

Descriptive Essay About Bamboo Bedding
How Bamboo Bedding Keeps You Cozy on a Frosty Winter Night
It s that time of year again. The leaves are changing to brilliant reds, oranges, and yellows, painting
the landscape in the beautiful glow of fall. Yet, autumn leaves also mean that winter is right around the
corner. With chilly nights ahead, what type of bedding should you use to stay warm this winter?
Well, if you want to stay cozy and warm this winter, try organic bamboo bedding. Below are some
ways bamboo bedding helps to keep you cozy on a frosty winter night.
First, bamboo bedding is fantastic at insulating heat.
Second, bamboo bedding reduces the level of humidity in your bed.
Third, bamboo bedding decreases your chances of disease.
Forth and finally, bamboo bedding is incredibly soft and smooth.
Insulates Heat
To start with, bamboo bedding is phenomenal at insulating heat, making it the ideal bedding for winter
weather. This organic bedding insulates heat because the fibers of bamboo are dense and thick. In fact,
they have an almost plush feel to them. Furthermore, when you re wrapped up in a bamboo comforter,
you feel like you re being embraced by a warm, plush cloud.
Additionally, bamboo bedding doesn t need to be bulky to keep you warm. For instance, bamboo
comforters don t need tons of layers since bamboo efficiently insulates heat. This helps bamboo
bedding to be lighter and lay flatter than traditional bedding. When your bedding isn t as bulky, it
doesn t weigh you down and you re more

Improvements in Water Quality
In Malawi the major sources of water for both domestic and industrial use include lakes, rivers and
ground water. Ground water is dependable for supplying water in rural areas and also in some urban
areas even though this source of water is most common in the rural areas. In some urban areas, the
major source of water are rivers. According to Government of Malawi (2010), many river basins are
under severe pressure resulting from deforestation, settlements, climate change, industry, mining,
commerce and unsustainable agriculture. These have consequently impacted negatively on the water
quality mainly due to sediment loads, industrial wastes, chemicals from agriculture and proliferation
of aquatic vegetation. In urban areas, especially areas with high concentration of people, the major
problem has been management of waste disposal. This has resulted in plastics that are just littered
anyhow in the major urban areas including Blantyre ending up in rivers. Ground water though viewed
as one of the safe sources of water, there are also a number of quality issues that are associated with it.
According to Government of Malawi (2010), some of the issues include high concentrations of
minerals such as fluoride, nitrates especially in agricultural areas, manganese and fecal matter in some
areas. All in all, these issues make ground water quality to be degraded too. It is clear from above that
improvements in water quality are no longer evitable. Failure to doing this

Whether Aphrodisiacs Pose A Mental Or Physical Stimulation...
Aphrodisiacs in the Body and Mind
An Aphrodisiac is defined a substance such as foods, drinks, or drugs, that cause or increase sexual
desire (Aphrodisiacs, n.d.). This paper will investigate whether aphrodisiacs pose a mental or physical
stimulation on the human body. It has been recorded that in multiple points of history, many things
were considered aphrodisiac, some of these things include potatoes. Aphrodisiacs have Greek origins,
deriving from the Greek word aphryodisiakos meaning sexual gem with aphrodisiac properties, from
aphrodisiac heterosexual pleasures form the neuter plural of aphrodisios of Aphrodite; greek goddess
of love and fertility (Aphrodisiacs, n.d.). The first aphrodisiac recorded in human history was body
odor, and potions were sold in ancient Rome. Aphrodisiacs were considered a threat to chastity after
the Roman Empire ended, which prompted the church to outlaw several aphrodisiacs. Western
civilizations such as the Incans and Aztecs used aphrodisiacs for reproductive purposes and Asia
utilized plants and insects as aphrodisiacs in order to increase their sexual libido. Aphrodisiacs have
shown to be dynamic in culture and practices, and also in the utilization within diverse groups of
people. Aphrodisiacs remain a topic of study for researches today, as they explore how various senses
of the body affect sexual arousal. Asia is believed to be the top consumer of aphrodisiacs, while other
countries believe the concept of Aphrodisiacs to be a

The very existence of disaster photography proves this. Voyeur as defined by the Oxford Dictionary is
a person who enjoys seeing the pain or distress of others. Why would humans continuously
photograph others suffering if they did not gain some pleasure from it? Photographers might say that
the motives of disaster photography are to document and expose horrors around the world. The
intention of the photographer about how the photo should be received and how it is actually received
can be quite different. An example of how humanity s voyeuristic tendencies effects how viewers react
to a photo is given by Susan Sontag in her book Regarding the Pain of Others. When photographs of
suffering are staged, people are surprised to learn they were staged, and always disappointed instead
of celebrating the fact that the suffering was not real (55). This disappointment is felt because of the
need to observe genuine suffering. The photos of the Halifax disaster used to make postcards are real
and it is because of humanity s voyeuristic tendencies that there is a market for these snapshots of

Compatibilism Essays
There are 3 basic views that can be taken on the view of determinism, (1) deny its reality, either
because of the existence of free will or on independent grounds; (2) accept its reality but argue for its
compatibility with free will; or (3) accept its reality and deny its compatibility with free will.In this
paper I am going to be defending the view compatibilism, specifically W. T. Stace s view of
compatibilism.
Compatibilism is the idea that determinism is true, every event in the world is caused, and that free
will still exists. Stace defends this view by saying the problem is the definition of free will. The
current definition of what free will is a completely and wholly uncaused action. However this
obviously would be completely ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are a few criticisms that are brought up against this compatibles view; in fact Stace brings up
possible objections himself. The first that I will consider is that there are some cases that are
borderline. For example, if somebody has a gun and puts it to your head and commands you to do
something it seems that you would have to do it even though the person with the gun is not physically
forcing you to do it. However I do not believe this to be a borderline case at all, even if someone is
holding a gun to your head you are still making the decision to do whatever it is that they are telling
you to do. It is still of your own mental state that you will do it out of your own perceived state that
whatever they are asking you to do would be preferable to your own death. The second objection that
he presents is that if you could somehow know that somebody was going to do an action before they
did it (even though this itself is very hard to believe) then how could they have done otherwise.
However I do not understand how this is detrimental to this argument of compatibilism. Obviously if
someone somehow new 100% for sure that you were going to do something then to even ask if the
person could have done otherwise is completely absurd, they obviously would have, as in the first part
of the statement its said that they couldn t. Basically saying that hypothetically you will do an action

Economic Stratfication And Economic Stratification
In class we had a discussion on social stratification, economic specialization and its rules with in
Mesopotamia, Egypt and Harappa. So, today I hope that elaborate on what economic specialization
and social stratification is and how it pertains to Mesopotamia, Egypt and Harappa. First, we will look
at the definition of both terms because I believe if you do not have a definition you may not know
what I am talking about and also you know exactly what you are looking for. Second, I will start off
with how social stratification in economic specialization relates to Mesopotamian. After that, I will
move on to Egypt and talk about how the terms relate. Finally, I will discuss the rapper and maybe
even show how unique they are in comparison to the other. Hopefully, with evidence from the book I
can paint a vivid picture, so that we are on the same wavelength, which would mean it is explained
well.
First, social stratification is a system in which a society ranks categories of people and a hierarchy. To
be honest, if I was going to put it in simplest terms for the cooler individuals in the crowd it is the way
a society groups People based off their social class, and does not have to pretend the money.
Economic specialization is when a nation or individual concentrates its productive efforts are
producing a limited variety of good. Sometimes the nation has to produce other goods and rely on
trade. Therefore, this is basically asking how to decide to get the things they need,

follows: a sum of money granted by the state or a public body to help an industry or business keep the
price of a commodity or service low (OED Add. Ser. Vol. 3, 1997). Subsidising industry is anathema

If we loosely adopt the progression as depicted in the vicious cycle diagram on the left, and begin
from the initial action of the closure of SPC, there is an immediate impact on the market by way of
equity (i.e., Coca Cola Amatil s share holders are affected), companies relying on SPC will find it
difficult to adapt to the new business conditions as they will now have to adjust for the loss of a
significant client, strain will also be placed on competitors as they may need to facilitate for greater
supply in order to satisfy the growing demand (thus placing unprecedented pressure on the business
and potentially increasing their over heads and capital outlay). Furthermore, certain communities and
townships may have flourished due to the inception or establishment of an industry or business (in this
context, the Shepparton, Victoria community where the canning facility is based) may now experience
difficulty and major adjustments that will effectively impact other areas of operations in the market. It

Teleological moral theories locate moral goodness in the consequences of our behavior and not the
behavior itself. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In early nineteenth century America, many members of the anti slavery movement argued that slavery
was wrong, even though slaveholders and southern society in general, economically benefited from it.
Suppose, also that the slaveholders were also able to condition the slaves to the point where they
actually enjoyed living under slavery. From a teleological perspective, slavery might appear to be an
ideal economic institution. Everybody is happy! A deontologist, however, would argue that even if the
American government conducted a detailed cost/benefit analysis of slavery and decided that it created
more pleasure in society than pain, it would still be wrong. Therefore, deontologists believe that right
and wrong have nothing to do with pleasure, pain, or consequences.
Morality is based on whether acts conflict with moral rules or not, and the motivation behind those
acts. An act is therefore, good if and only if it was performed out of a desire to do one s duty and obey
a rule. In other words, act out of a good will. Hence, slavery is wrong, not because of its negative
consequences, but because it violates an absolute moral rule.
In the Western tradition there have been two approaches to the establishment of deontological
principles: divine command theory and Kantian theory.
DIVINE COMMAND THEORY
Divine Command Theory states that the moral goodness of an act is based on religious authority.
Hence, for

My Introductory On Public Administration
My Introductory to Public Administration class has taught me the range that can come with public
administration. Public administrators are employed in all levels of government, across various fields
including social welfare, financial administration, and human resources (Denhardt, 2014, p. 1).
Despite the various type of public administration jobs that exist, the one thing all public administrators
are required to do is to maintain a commitment to public service (Denhardt, 2014, p. 1). In order to
better understand how public administrators are responsive to public interests, I was assigned the task
of interviewing a professional in public administration. I chose to interview Jeanell Emond, program
manager for Central Valley Prevention Program (CVPP) and Mental Health Systems (MHS), because
of my future in social work and my interest in developing and managing programs that benefit the
community. Through the interview I was able to gain valuable insight on the agency and Mrs. Emond
s role as a public administrator. More importantly, I was able to learn how interorganizational
partnerships, financial management, ethics, and leadership and management skills in public
administration can help develop stronger communities.
MHS is a non profit organization that provides innovative and cost effective mental health and drug
and alcohol recovery services through more than 85 community based programs throughout California
(Mental Health Systems, 2016). CVPP, one of the programs

The Impacts Of The 18th And 18th Amendments
The Eighteenth and Nineteenth Amendments The Eighteenth Amendment states that, one year after
the states ratified the article, the making, selling, and importing or exporting of alcohol is illegal
unless for medicinal or religious reasons. Congress can pass any laws it finds necessary to uphold the
Eighteenth Amendment. If ¾ of the states did not ratify the article within seven years, then the article
would not take effect. (18th Amendment)
One impact of the Eighteenth Amendment was the end, in theory, of the sale and consumption of
alcohol. America had just returned from World War I when Prohibition was started. The men had
gotten addicted to morphine and heroine and could no longer buy those drugs so they bought the
cheapest thing they could find alcohol. This started a wave of drunkenness across the country and the
women were not happy. The women had taken men s place in the workforce while they were gone
and, when the men came back, they lost all their jobs to the men. But, the men were not working.
Instead, they were getting drunk all day, trying to forget what they saw at war. This angered women
greatly. Because the women had gained power from working the men s jobs during the war, the
women used their power to promote Prohibition across the country.
Another impact of the Eighteenth Amendment is the rise of organized crime. It is the law of supply
and demand. When the supply of a product, alcohol, goes down, the demand for it goes up. Crime

Pride And Prejudice And The Pursuit Of Happiness Summary
Claudia Johnson critical article response
Claudia Johnson in her essay, Pride and Prejudice and the Pursuit of Happiness, claims that happiness
is the centralized theme of the novel, Pride and Prejudice. Johnson suggests that the element of
happiness carries the weight of political and social commentary, a comment preceded by a litany of
examples. One example being Darcy s struggle to find happiness in his independent choice of
marrying Elizabeth while combating his sense of self consequence [that] is characterized by a haughty
determination to be mortified by everyone outside his small circle (349). Johnson also defends Austen
from critics who claim the novel supports a fairytale style happy ending that doesn t resolve the
political or social issues brought about in the novel s opening pages. Johnson combats this criticism by
stating the political resolution can be found not within the novel s closing pages, but within the actions
of the characters. Johnson goes further to state that Austen s care to establish the standards of her
characters happiness provides us with index of their moral imaginations, tempers, and resources that
enable us to engage in judicious moral evaluation without resorting to the conclusive moralizing
characteristics of some of her contemporaries (350).
Johnson evaluates that each character serves a role not only in the narrative, but more importantly as
manifestations of Austen s own social commentary of her era and social/political

Salmonella And The Gastrointestinal System
Salmonella is a bacteria people get after eating raw foods. This bacteria can cause diseases and make
people sick, or even kill them. Salmonella only causes noticeable symptoms for people who have a
weakened digestive system. The bacteria causes the gastrointestinal system malfunction once it
reaches the stomach and intestines. The structure of Salmonella makes it hard to be killed by the body.
Salmonella works by moving around in the stomach and intestines, which spreads it everywhere.
Salmonella affects the gastrointestinal system the most. The gastrointestinal system includes the
mouth, esophagus, the stomach, and large and small intestines. Salmonella gets into your body by
being on the food you eat, and sheds off the food into your gastrointestinal system. According to
Virtual Medical Centre, The first place your food goes is in your mouth and down your esophagus to
the stomach, which is where the food gets propelled by the intestines. ... Show more content on

The most common foods infected with salmonella include raw meat, poultry, seafood, raw eggs, and
fruits and vegetables. These contaminated foods cause symptoms like nausea, vomiting, abdominal
cramps, diarrhea, fever, chills, headaches, and blood in the stool (Mayo Clinic). According to the
Mayo Clinic, These symptoms may last 4 to 7 days, but it will take several months for your bowels to
return back to normal after the contamination. These symptoms are caused by diseases like
gastroenteritis, which is when the salmonella reaches your stomach and intestines (Gale Science in
Context). Other foods that can be contaminated are foods that are touched by people who didn t wash
their hands after using the toilet, handle raw meat or poultry, touch reptiles or birds, changing a diaper,
or cleaning up pet feces. These can contaminate the food with feces. The person that does these tasks
should wash their hands, which would prevent contaminating the food with

The Effects of Exercise on the Pulmonary Ventilation Rate
Respiration is the process that takes place in every living cell to make energy available to the body.
Energy is vital for us to carry out many life processes such as movement and so respiration in essential
to life. During respiration glucose and oxygen are used in a reaction that produces energy and gives
out carbon dioxide and water as waste products. Glucose is obtained by digestion of food and oxygen
is taken from the air during a process called breathing or ventilation. Pulmonary Ventilation is the term
given to the movement of air in and out of the lungs; the rate of pulmonary ventilation is defined as
the tidal volume multiplied by the number of breaths taken per minute. Tidal volume is the volume of
air breathed in or out during ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Introduction
Beer Wars was a very eye opening documentary. It was interesting to see how the market share of the
largest beer company, Anheiser Busch, has grown throughout the years. In 1965, Anheiser Busch had
a meager market share of twelve percent. As marketing on television grew in popularity, Anheiser
Busch s market share grew as well. By 1985, Anheiser Busch s market share had grew to thirty seven
percent. By 2005, Anheiser Busch s market share had ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
That is an amazingly large amount of beer for one company to sell. This also tells us that the hope is
not nearly lost for craft brewers. If all of the 1,950 craft brewers produced only ½ million barrels of
beer each year, they could easily cripple the large beer manufacturers with an influx of 975 million
barrels of beer flooding the marketplace. But, the vast majority of craft brewers would never want to
do that.
The Craft Beer Way
The craft brewers in the United States and around the world have a completely different take on what
it means to brew beer. Dogfish Head craft beer was said to only have .0002% of the market share of
beer sales in the United States. According to brewersassociation.org, Dogfish Head craft beer ranked
12th in the nation in 2011, based upon the number of sales for a craft brewery. That is truly amazing,
how a company ranked 12th in the whole country in craft beer sales still only has .0002% of the total
market share of the beer industry. However, the owner of the company said that he would never want
to grow like the large beer companies have. He is more concerned about each and every bottle of beer
being the best beer possible, rather than worrying too much about how many cases he is able to send
out the door. As a whole, craft beer makers try to capture their piece of the market through
differentiation of their products and not through advertising like the large beer companies. Craft beer
makers still try to do new

  • 2. Foreign Language Assimilation Paper In a worldwide scale, Spanish is one of the most spoken languages in the world today. According to the United States Census Bureau, Orange County inhabits approximately 770, 513 Spanish speakers in Southern California, compared to about 3,948 Spanish speakers in Kent County, Rhode Island in 2016 ( Language Spoken at Home ). Comparing the West Coast county from the East Coast, Spanish speakers retain their language despite the population gap between two separate sites of the U.S. Yet, the language use may become a community language rather than a foreign language as it is introduced by immigrants. Some immigrants have trouble adapting to a new lifestyle because of limited resources. Yet, other immigrants who did not have much of a difficult time were able to integrate Spanish into a new society. For instance, Areli Martinez, a Mexican immigrant studying Psychology at UCLA, moved to the U.S. with her family in pursuit of better quality of life did not experience much difficulty in adjusting. From an email interview (see email interview above), she mentions her experiences as a Spanish speaker in California. Although it was not difficult for Martinez to adjust, her implications included language barriers and weak cultural values (see email response below). Due to language barriers and lack of cultural values, Martinez struggled with grammar and placing her thoughts on paper when she was younger, but she was later able to persevere in learning English from cultural diversity and freedom to create her own values. Further, she also realizes that importance of Spanish in both the U.S. and Mexico (Martinez). With regards to the historical roots of Spanish, the Western hemisphere have benefited from the monopolization of this language because it brings cultural and linguistic ties from a global perspective. • 3. Similarities And Differences Between Robert E. Lee General War It no secret that General Ulysses S. Grant and General Robert E. Lee had their differences. Ranging from appearance to actions they hardly shared any similarities. This makes them both easily comparable. Both had their ups and their downs, but in the end, General Robert E. Lee was the best general overall. Let us start somewhere easy, let us start with their appearances. Lee stood at a 5 ft. 11 in., weighing 175 lbs., and Grant stood under him at 5ft. 7 in., weighing 140 lbs. While Lee was compared in size to the great Abraham Lincoln, it has been said that Grant had to stand on a stool just to address other soldiers. As for their attire Lee was always seen in a perfect uniform. His jacket pressed, complete with a sash, general s sword, hat, white gloves, and shined boots. Grant on the other hand always look disheveled. He wore a simple private s uniform with general insignia added on, complete with a jacket that looked slept in. Many people accredit this look saying that His mind was too busy on winning the war than on looking presentable. His personal account of how he came to this shows more, I was impatient to get on my uniform and see how it looked, and probably wanted my old school mates, particularly the girls, to see me in it. The conceit was knocked out of me by two little circumstances that happened soon after the arrival of the clothes, which gave me a distaste for military uniform that I never recovered from. Disadvantages Of Free Range Parenting Free range parenting is a type of way to help a kids early, young, and adolescent stages of their life with their skills and abilities as well as for teaching them how to be self supportive and to learn how to become a responsible young adult to be a better prepared for the future. In free range parenting their is no specific way of raising your child due to the fact that their can be several methods but what i do think is that their should be only one way when it comes to parenting. Free range parenting of course can and may have many negative but also many positive outcomes as well depending on the type of technique the set of parents are using and by the way their kids are being raised and treated over the years of their teen life. Every set of parents have their own technique, tactic, or method when it comes to parenting but at times the way they do it isn t the correct one to utilize at a child s young age. The three types of free range parenting methods that their is are the Abusive or neglectful parents, the prepared developmentally parents, and finally the helicopter type of parents. An extreme kind parenting parent is an abusive or neglectful type of way that some children get from the parents since they don t get or receive enough support, help, and assistance from their parents. In fiscal year 2012 alone, Office Depot generated $10.7 billion of revenues from its products and services, yet industry reviews of this company seem unfavorable. The increase in cash flow from investing activities, also in Figure 7, indicates that although the company continued to make investments in 2012, it had cut the amount dramatically. As a result, the investments might not be able to fit its needs for sustainable development. Overall, Office Depot s solvency condition in the past three years has not been satisfactory. Figure 7: Cash Flow by Activities (in thousands) Operating Efficiency Analysis As a measure of operating efficiency, Office Depot s ROA was incredibly low. The ROA in 2011 was only 0.8% and went all the way down to 1.9% in 2012, as shown in Figure 8, which demonstrates that management did a poor job in generating productivity from employing the firm s resources. Figure 8: Return on Assets Considering that the industry s average ROA was as high as 8.3%, a negative ROA is not acceptable for most companies. Given its cost of capital was 11.78% in 2012, the ROA of 1.9% indicates that the earnings of Office Depot was not able to cover its financing cost so that its performance was far from adequate in 2012. Based on the DuPont Equation in Figure 9, ROA is the product of ROS and assets turnover, both of which have declined in 2012 for Office Depot. Its assets turnover has ... Essay on You Never Thought You Had to Think to Count You Never Thought You Had to Think to Count It was after taking the 2nd MOEMS (Math Olympiad Elementary and Middle School) that I heard this phrase from my school s math coach. We had sat and taken this test for 26 minutes, and then afterwards ALWAYS talked about the problems. It came up when looking at a problem that went somewhat like this: Each student in an art class is given 48 cubes that measure 1cm x 1cm x 1cm. No students make the same design. What is the largest possible amount of students in that class? I was so close! I answered eight, when in fact, the answer was nine! Everything was right about my strategy, thinking, and what I did, but I had missed one of the figures. That is what I am getting to; that is what makes it so ... There is algebra, and calculus, and... and... and...! Yes, but there is also counting in other base systems. Ever heard of that? This is page 10 of this chapter! You can count in any base system at all. Almost everyone uses base system ten. Hypothetically speaking, if you were to say I want to count in base system three! You tell you friend you are going to count to seven so they know when to start the race. The number seven in base system three is twenty one. So you would count like this: 1, 2, 10, 11, 12, 20, 21! When you are about to say three, the tens digit goes up one. The only possible units digits when counting in base three are 0, 1, and 2. Here is how you figure it out using a quick shortcut. Three goes into seven twice (2_) with one remainder, so it turns into 21. It seems pretty simple, but in reality, it is not. Counting began with the simple action of putting marks on a bone. Numbers, and counting, began about 4,000 BC in Sumeria one of the earliest civilizations. Also, algorithm I guess you could say; started with chickens...? Well, not really. Their method of counting began as a series of tokens. [...] If a man had five chickens he was given five tokens. When he traded or killed one of his chickens, one of his tokens was removed. • 8. Women In Postclassical China During the Postclassical era, which spanned from 500 and 1450 C.E, the roles of women in China and Japan experienced change, as well as continuity. China and Japan both experienced several stages of change, from arranged marriages and not being allowed to participate in government, to more freedom in marriage and property rights and becoming priestess and empresses. Continuities in this time included a strict patriarchal society and practices such as foot binding that remained throughout an entire dynasty. • 9. The Importance Of Birth Control Louise Slaughter, a New York congresswoman, once wrote, for most women, including women who want to have children, contraception, is not an option, it is a basic health care necessity . In other words, Slaughter believes that for many women, no matter their decision on child bearing, contraceptives are are essential to their health. In short, contraception is just as important as a routine check up with a primary doctor. Furthermore, birth control serves more than one purpose; contraception controls if or when women reproduce but is also used to treat medical conditions, such as, endometriosis, and irregular menstruation. Although, the first birth control clinic was opened in Brooklyn, New York in 1916 by Margaret Sanger, the fight for reproductive freedom and the complete legalization of contraception would not end until the 1960s. Merely ten days after opening the clinic, Sanger and employees were arrested for breaking the Comstock Law. The Comstock Law, which was passed in 1873, prohibited and restricted advertisements and sales of information, and materials, that could be used as contraception. Although the odds were against her in the fight for legal birth control, Sanger reopened the clinic; however, Sanger was arrested a second time and was charged with maintaining a public nuisance according to the Margaret Sanger Paper Project. • 10. American Football Enforcing Rules Are the NFL and NCAA enforcing rules that make American football TOO safe? Over the years these organizations have gradually changed the way football is being played. The changes have mostly been made to keep players safe and make the game less violent. With all these rule changes some people think it is taking the fun away from the game. American Football has become a sport that is classified as too soft compared to what it used to be. The way football is played has been thoroughly changed over the years. Football used to be a sport where the defense was much more involved in many different scenarios and stops. Nowadays you cannot tackle aiming for the chest, head, or just a defenseless player in general, leading with the helmet of your gear. This rule is called targeting, and it was implemented to the game in 2013. Many players and coaches believe that this rule has made tackling too beneficial for the offense, as well as giving them a very safe field to play on. • 12. PBIS Understanding Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and managing student behavior is an imperative part of all educator responsibility. Starting in the 1980s (Simonsen, 2012), it was obvious that better, more efficient ways of connecting with students with behavioral challenges was needed. A form of intervention that went beyond the standard, or traditional means of being sent out of class, a phone call home which may have led to punishments that escalated the behaviors instead of working through them, or even being put on suspension which most likely heighten the stress and allowed for little to no resolution of the behavioral challenges the student(s) was going through. PBIS is not just for the special needs children of today; the original need was identified to help the special needs population and has since found its importance throughout most school systems as a general practice (Simonsen, 2012). PBIS is referred to as a framework where the emphasis is on a process or approach, rather than a curriculum, intervention, or practice (Simonsen, 2012). But at the end true colors are revealed. Illusion verses reality is one of the many themes expressed in Othello by William Shakespeare. There are many examples shown through the character Othello where the misconception of illusion and reality leads to misfortune. This is displayed when Othello develops an outrageous jealousy due to Iago manipulating him, or when there s irrelevant hatred created between Othello and Cassio because of these manipulations. When Iago s schemes work it fools Othello s gullible personality, resulting in him doubting his love for Desdemona. William Shakespeare ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Due to Iago s perception of Othello being naïve, Iago uses his phenomenal understanding of the human psyche as his ability to orchestrate pre planned scenarios. Iago is successfully and carefully able to manipulate Othello s thoughts into thinking Desdemona has been unfaithful and that it was false love. I called my love false love, but what he said then? (IV, iii, 59) This is significant because Desdemona is beginning to realize that the love Othello had for her must have been false she s worried that Othello will leave her. Due to Othello s inability to differentiate between delusion and reality it s bringing forth disaster leading to their relationship suffering. Othello being able to trust people easily allowed Iago s words to manipulate him into making a tremendously poor decision which was killing Desdemona. Put out the light, and then put out the light, (V,ii, 7) This quote is paramount because Othello blows out the candle just before he strangles Desdemona which symbolizes Desdemona s fragile life and because he is so manipulated by Iago there is no turning back and he is ready to kill her. The Napoleonic Er The Causes Of The Napoleonic Era The Napoleonic Era can be said to have begun with the Coup of 18 Brumaire, which overthrew the Directory (and is often believed to have brought the French Revolution to a close), and established the French Consulate, along with the appointment of Napoleon as First Consul in the winter of 1779. Preceding this time, the French were fighting a loosing battle against the Ottomans throughout Egypt, Greater Syria, and the Levant. The Metropolitan Museum Of Art Essay Positioned alongside Central Park within the heart of New York City, The Metropolitan Museum of Art is one of the largest and most influential art museums in the world. The Met houses an extensive collection of curated works that spans throughout various time periods and different cultures. The context of museums, especially one as influential as the Met, inherently predisposes its visitors to a set of understandings that subtly influence how they interpret and ultimately construct meanings about each individual object within a museum. By analyzing two separate works on exhibit at the Met, I will pose the argument that museums offer a unique expression of a world view that is dictated through every element of its construction. An object placed on display behind a glass case inside a museum would hold a vastly different meaning if it were for sale by a street vendor, such as the individuals who set up their tables only a few feet away from the Met. Brent Plate in Religion, Art, and Visual Culture argues that objects obtain different meanings in different locations and historical settings. The different meanings that objects are able to obtain is attributed to the relationships that are established between the object itself and the environment that it is located in. These relationships often involve the kind of audience that a museum attracts, where the work is exhibited, and how the exhibit is laid out. Museums subsequently have the ability ... Armstrong goes through each of the stories of Genesis and interprets what each story is about and how we can relate it to our own lives. The book of Genesis can be difficult to understand and it holds many mysteries within it, but with the help of Karen Armstrong, we are able to understand the stories of Genesis and what they mean. This is the story of the Bible s first book, raw and unchurched. Karen introduces us one by one to the characters and their stories, making no effort to turn them into saints, for they are nothing like the impossibly and depressingly flawless characters we met in Sunday School. Throughout, the authors of Genesis remind us that we can expect no clear cut answers. We wrestle with the text, measuring its inconsistent doctrines and contradictory lessons, as we struggle to grasp the character of God. How can God be omnipotent, but powerless to control his creation? How can God be benevolent but a killer; wise but arbitrary; just but partial and unfair; omniscient but ignorant of human yearning? In Richard Wright s short story The Man Who Was Almost a Man the main character, Dave Saunders, also faces a problem which can be similarly traced to sociocultural factors. While shooting his gun for the first time Dave accidentally shoots his boss , Mr. Hawkins, mule, and the mule dies. The only reason Dave purchased a gun in the first place was to prove to the others in society, specifically those who worked alongside him at Mr. Hawkins plantation, that he was not a boy anymore, but rather a man. While working on Mr. Hawkins plantation Dave is often humiliated by the older workers because they think [he] ain t nothing but a boy (878). Also, the narrator states near the end of the story that a group of people that has gathered around the dead mule on the plantation laughs at Dave as he is walking away with tear filled eyes (886). Once again this emphasizes that he receives no respect from the others. Mr. Hawkins plantation is similar to the social environment in Harlem described in Sonny s Blues . Both ... • 20. Queen Matilda Of England And The Marriage Table A Dowry Of... Queen Matilda of England brought to the marriage table a dowry of estates. While, she did not grant William great wealth, she did possess great wealth of her own. Roughly one fourth of the wealth of Matilda and William belonged to Matilda. She presented her husband with the ship the Mora as a symbol of her approval of his conquest of England. Matilda, being well educated and capable, served as regent of Normandy while her husband was away in England. Matilda made the journey to England in 1068 where she was crowned Queen of England. Matilda, like many queens of her time, actively participated in government. Roughly one hundred charters bear Matilda s name, suggesting that she occasionally maintained full responsibility of Normandy in her husband s absence. Matilda became a wealthy landowner in England, where she held lands in the counties of Surrey, Hampshire, Wiltshire, Dorset, Devon, Cornwall, Buckinghamshire, and Gloucestershire. She maintained contact with her family in Flanders and even provided William with Flemish men for his army. She was also a key player in King William s rule of England, hearing land pleas and negotiating with nobles. Matilda played a lesser role in foreign politics than her husband. She did, however, maintain contacts with the Church. She sent gifts to French abbots and German hermits along with open contact with Pope Gregory VII. Pope Gregory VII encouraged Matilda to bring her husband closer to the church where the Pope s could keep a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 21. The Round House By Louise Erdrich Survivance is a term that is used in Native American studies and it includes two important terms: survival and resistance . Survivance refers to an active sense of presence and in native stories, natural reason, active traditions, customs, narrative resistance, and clearly observable in personal attributes, such as humor, spirit, cast of mind, and moral courage (Vizenor). It allows them to transform their experiences of historical trauma into courage, forgiveness, and healing through political activism and cultural revitalization (sfsu).Vizenor defines this term in opposition to victimry and it is more than just survival for the Native Americans, but as self reliant perseverance through all the hardships that had presented themselves such as the forced assimilation into the white community and culture. Instead of losing their roots, the Native Americans were able to hold on to their historical culture and traditions and were so much more than mere survival. The Round House, written by Louise Erdrich is a fictional novel that focuses on a Chippewa family in a North Dakota Indian reservation. The story is written from the perspective of a young man, Joe Coutts, who is the son of a tribal judge, Bazil Coutts, and his mother, Geraldine, who was brutally raped by a white man, Lindin Lark, in a savage act of vengeance. • 22. Descriptive Essay About The Cafe The cafe is a short jaunt from our apartment, a splendid notion to someone who would rather spend the entire day hiding in her bedroom. Adorned in our jeans, thick hoodies and jackets, we braved the frigid weather. As soon as we departed from the building, Alice deemed it necessary to add restraints by the use of her arm linked within mine. As we enter the cafe, the clatter of dishes and a low din of chatter penetrates my ears, while the scent of pastries mingled with fried food imbues my nostrils. The warm air saturates my clothing, filling me with gratitude to be out of the cold. Beside me, Alice flattens her windswept hair as she searches for a free table. A smug smile caresses my lips. Before we left, I tied my hair back in a messy bun to prevent the menacing wind from ravaging my hair. As I scrutinise the cafe, I observe patrons occupy each of the cream leathered booths. As my gaze drifts over to the counter, no stools are available to us. A glimmer of hope materialises. What a shame, we ll have to go home where I can return to my solitude. However, Alice obliterates that hope the moment she says, There s a free table at the back. Come on. We slide along opposite benches beside the wide window that allows the grey sky to filter in. After shedding from my jacket, I rest my hands on the stainless steel table and interlock my fingers, and observe Alice as she continues to tackle with her matted hair. • 23. Scarlet Letter Brooding Romanticism At the end of chapter 5, it is evident that Hester is more of a brooding Romantic; she has a tragic confrontation with the universe around her, she isolates herself and becomes paranoid, and she develops a dark outlook of her scarlet letter by associating it with Hell. After experiencing an extreme amount of public humiliation, it is no surprise that Hester Prynne may think negatively about her reality in Boston. Hester s negative outlook, a characteristic that can be credited to her broodingly romantic personality, is clearly evident within the end of chapter 5. The cause of this negative outlook is due to a tragic confrontation that she experiences with the world around her. She looks beyond her own sins and has a sudden realization that in fact anyone has the ability to transgress just as easily as she did. Hester is terror stricken by the revelations of knowing that others sin. The fact that she is terror stricken suggests that she is now looking at the world around her in a way she never previously had. Hester is overwhelmed with terror to realize that people are genuinely immoral. In the final paragraph, those with vulgar minds are credited with contributing grotesque horror to their conception of the scarlet letter. However, this grotesque horror is not so grotesque after all. Hawthorne reveals that the scarlet letter being a symbol of infernal fire is more of a reality for Hester than an actual rumor. Associating the scarlet letter with something infernal implies that it can be connected to the idea of Hell. This yields a very dark and dire perspective of reality for Hester, and the connection of Hester to Hell through the scarlet letter epitomizes the brooding Romantic inside of ... Beowulf And Gilgamesh Essay Comparative English Essay Compare the Beowulf poet s presentation of the battles with Grendel and his mother with the Gilgamesh poet s depiction of Gilgamesh battles with Huwawa and the Bull of Heaven. Fame and glory have been the most admirable characteristics in the middle Ages and even before Christ in the ancient civilizations. The epics of Gilgamesh and Beowulf are stories of heroism and immortality gained through fame. The aim of the main characters, Beowulf and Gilgamesh, is to be a good warrior by being courageous, respectful and prudent, a protector and servant to their king (only in the beginning of Beowulf, as he later becomes king and Gilgamesh already is) and their country. First, one will never develop an attitude of responsibility if they always look for others to complete their task. It is a necessity that one has personal discipline or their efforts to be responsible will prove to be fruitless. Second, being responsible yields great rewards and acting responsible is a clear sign of maturity. One preliminary plan that a student can design to achieve academic success is goal setting. Goal setting allows the student to define their academic goals and to devise a plan that will accommodate their collegiate career. One way to make goals effective is to examine them up close. (Ellis, p. 70,2011) Prior to this point we established several factors to confirm the necessity of personal responsibility, but here we will interject effective strategies that a student must use to generate success in their chosen field of study. • 28. Poverty In Poverty Poverty is very widespread and touches the lives of millions of Americans. Through the speeches of Russell Conwell (Acres of Diamonds 1915) and Samuel Gompers (What does the working man want? 1890) we see through their eyes how each man feels about this topic. Being in poverty is something that none of us want for ourselves. Even though we try our best sometimes it is something that is out of our hands and something we can t avoid. Conwell s philosophy is in many ways aligned with the foundations of Social Darwinism. He believes that it is our duty to work hard and earn our wealth. A wealthy person is deemed an honest man, because he does the work and doesn t rely on someone else to do it for him. The survival of the fittest has been proven by the fact that those who are poor were not willing to try and work or just didn t have what it takes to overcome the odds and were pushed off to the side. The fittest were willing to work and overcome the odds by hard work or figuring out ways to bypass the obstacles that were standing in their way. For example, Conwell speaks of the man who began whittling toys for his children and became a millionaire. He used what he had around him and a skill he had to become successful. Also, Conwell speaks of the man who went off to foreign lands looking for diamonds instead of continuing to work hard on his farm. Had he done so he would have been the one to find the diamonds right there on his own land. Samuel Gompers sees that the poor face many difficulties and are treated like a machine instead of a man, because of the long hours he must work. He believes by shortening work days that men are more likely to do more outside of work to better themselves and that they will be more productive at work as well in their personal lives. He feels that politicians and college professors take advantage of workers because of the amount of men and women who are looking for work which allows them to pay them less in wages and force them to work long hours in unsafe working environments. Gompers wanted employers to see these mean and woman who are searching for jobs as human beings not as just another cog in the wheel of the labor movement. Ground water is dependable for supplying water in rural areas and also in some urban areas even though this source of water is most common in the rural areas. In some urban areas, the major source of water are rivers. According to Government of Malawi (2010), many river basins are under severe pressure resulting from deforestation, settlements, climate change, industry, mining, commerce and unsustainable agriculture. These have consequently impacted negatively on the water quality mainly due to sediment loads, industrial wastes, chemicals from agriculture and proliferation of aquatic vegetation. In urban areas, especially areas with high concentration of people, the major problem has been management of waste disposal. This has resulted in plastics that are just littered anyhow in the major urban areas including Blantyre ending up in rivers. Aphrodisiacs in the Body and Mind An Aphrodisiac is defined a substance such as foods, drinks, or drugs, that cause or increase sexual desire (Aphrodisiacs, n.d.). This paper will investigate whether aphrodisiacs pose a mental or physical stimulation on the human body. It has been recorded that in multiple points of history, many things were considered aphrodisiac, some of these things include potatoes. Aphrodisiacs have Greek origins, deriving from the Greek word aphryodisiakos meaning sexual gem with aphrodisiac properties, from aphrodisiac heterosexual pleasures form the neuter plural of aphrodisios of Aphrodite; greek goddess of love and fertility (Aphrodisiacs, n.d.). The first aphrodisiac recorded in human history was body odor, and potions were sold in ancient Rome. Aphrodisiacs were considered a threat to chastity after the Roman Empire ended, which prompted the church to outlaw several aphrodisiacs. Western civilizations such as the Incans and Aztecs used aphrodisiacs for reproductive purposes and Asia utilized plants and insects as aphrodisiacs in order to increase their sexual libido. Aphrodisiacs have shown to be dynamic in culture and practices, and also in the utilization within diverse groups of people. The intention of the photographer about how the photo should be received and how it is actually received can be quite different. An example of how humanity s voyeuristic tendencies effects how viewers react to a photo is given by Susan Sontag in her book Regarding the Pain of Others. When photographs of suffering are staged, people are surprised to learn they were staged, and always disappointed instead of celebrating the fact that the suffering was not real (55). T. Stace s view of compatibilism. Compatibilism is the idea that determinism is true, every event in the world is caused, and that free will still exists. There are a few criticisms that are brought up against this compatibles view; in fact Stace brings up possible objections himself. The first that I will consider is that there are some cases that are borderline. For example, if somebody has a gun and puts it to your head and commands you to do something it seems that you would have to do it even though the person with the gun is not physically forcing you to do it. However I do not believe this to be a borderline case at all, even if someone is holding a gun to your head you are still making the decision to do whatever it is that they are telling you to do. It is still of your own mental state that you will do it out of your own perceived state that whatever they are asking you to do would be preferable to your own death. The second objection that he presents is that if you could somehow know that somebody was going to do an action before they did it (even though this itself is very hard to believe) then how could they have done otherwise. However I do not understand how this is detrimental to this argument of compatibilism. Obviously if someone somehow new 100% for sure that you were going to do something then to even ask if the person could have done otherwise is completely absurd, they obviously would have, as in the first part of the statement its said that they couldn t. Thiele encouraged Scott Heron to perform his poetry, and for his debut release, Small Talk at 125th and Lenox, recorded him reciting over an ensemble of percussionists. Most influential on the album was The Revolution Will Not Be Televised, an aggressive polemic against the major media and white America s ignorance of increasingly deteriorating conditions in the inner cities (Bush). Based on the dichotomy between the commercials on television and the marches in the streets not being televised, Scott Heron wrote a poem that would now be the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In early nineteenth century America, many members of the anti slavery movement argued that slavery was wrong, even though slaveholders and southern society in general, economically benefited from it. Suppose, also that the slaveholders were also able to condition the slaves to the point where they actually enjoyed living under slavery. From a teleological perspective, slavery might appear to be an ideal economic institution. Everybody is happy! A deontologist, however, would argue that even if the American government conducted a detailed cost/benefit analysis of slavery and decided that it created more pleasure in society than pain, it would still be wrong. Therefore, deontologists believe that right and wrong have nothing to do with pleasure, pain, or consequences. Morality is based on whether acts conflict with moral rules or not, and the motivation behind those acts. An act is therefore, good if and only if it was performed out of a desire to do one s duty and obey a rule. In other words, act out of a good will. Hence, slavery is wrong, not because of its negative consequences, but because it violates an absolute moral rule. In the Western tradition there have been two approaches to the establishment of deontological principles: divine command theory and Kantian theory. DIVINE COMMAND THEORY Divine Command Theory states that the moral goodness of an act is based on religious authority. Hence, for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. My Introductory On Public Administration My Introductory to Public Administration class has taught me the range that can come with public administration. Public administrators are employed in all levels of government, across various fields including social welfare, financial administration, and human resources (Denhardt, 2014, p. 1). Despite the various type of public administration jobs that exist, the one thing all public administrators are required to do is to maintain a commitment to public service (Denhardt, 2014, p. 1). In order to better understand how public administrators are responsive to public interests, I was assigned the task of interviewing a professional in public administration. I chose to interview Jeanell Emond, program manager for Central Valley Prevention Program (CVPP) and Mental Health Systems (MHS), because of my future in social work and my interest in developing and managing programs that benefit the community. Through the interview I was able to gain valuable insight on the agency and Mrs. Emond s role as a public administrator. More importantly, I was able to learn how interorganizational partnerships, financial management, ethics, and leadership and management skills in public administration can help develop stronger communities. MHS is a non profit organization that provides innovative and cost effective mental health and drug and alcohol recovery services through more than 85 community based programs throughout California (Mental Health Systems, 2016). • 42. The Impacts Of The 18th And 18th Amendments The Eighteenth and Nineteenth Amendments The Eighteenth Amendment states that, one year after the states ratified the article, the making, selling, and importing or exporting of alcohol is illegal unless for medicinal or religious reasons. Congress can pass any laws it finds necessary to uphold the Eighteenth Amendment. If ¾ of the states did not ratify the article within seven years, then the article would not take effect. (18th Amendment) One impact of the Eighteenth Amendment was the end, in theory, of the sale and consumption of alcohol. America had just returned from World War I when Prohibition was started. The men had gotten addicted to morphine and heroine and could no longer buy those drugs so they bought the cheapest thing they could find alcohol. This started a wave of drunkenness across the country and the women were not happy. The women had taken men s place in the workforce while they were gone and, when the men came back, they lost all their jobs to the men. But, the men were not working. Instead, they were getting drunk all day, trying to forget what they saw at war. This angered women greatly. Because the women had gained power from working the men s jobs during the war, the women used their power to promote Prohibition across the country. Another impact of the Eighteenth Amendment is the rise of organized crime. It is the law of supply and demand. When the supply of a product, alcohol, goes down, the demand for it goes up. • 43. Pride And Prejudice And The Pursuit Of Happiness Summary Claudia Johnson critical article response Claudia Johnson in her essay, Pride and Prejudice and the Pursuit of Happiness, claims that happiness is the centralized theme of the novel, Pride and Prejudice. Johnson suggests that the element of happiness carries the weight of political and social commentary, a comment preceded by a litany of examples. One example being Darcy s struggle to find happiness in his independent choice of marrying Elizabeth while combating his sense of self consequence [that] is characterized by a haughty determination to be mortified by everyone outside his small circle (349). Johnson also defends Austen from critics who claim the novel supports a fairytale style happy ending that doesn t resolve the political or social issues brought about in the novel s opening pages. Johnson combats this criticism by stating the political resolution can be found not within the novel s closing pages, but within the actions of the characters. Johnson goes further to state that Austen s care to establish the standards of her characters happiness provides us with index of their moral imaginations, tempers, and resources that enable us to engage in judicious moral evaluation without resorting to the conclusive moralizing characteristics of some of her contemporaries (350). Johnson evaluates that each character serves a role not only in the narrative, but more importantly as manifestations of Austen s own social commentary of her era and social/political ... • 44. Salmonella And The Gastrointestinal System Salmonella is a bacteria people get after eating raw foods. This bacteria can cause diseases and make people sick, or even kill them. Salmonella only causes noticeable symptoms for people who have a weakened digestive system. The bacteria causes the gastrointestinal system malfunction once it reaches the stomach and intestines. The structure of Salmonella makes it hard to be killed by the body. Salmonella works by moving around in the stomach and intestines, which spreads it everywhere. Salmonella affects the gastrointestinal system the most. The gastrointestinal system includes the mouth, esophagus, the stomach, and large and small intestines. Salmonella gets into your body by being on the food you eat, and sheds off the food into your gastrointestinal system. It was interesting to see how the market share of the largest beer company, Anheiser Busch, has grown throughout the years. In 1965, Anheiser Busch had a meager market share of twelve percent. As marketing on television grew in popularity, Anheiser Busch s market share grew as well. By 1985, Anheiser Busch s market share had grew to thirty seven percent. This also tells us that the hope is not nearly lost for craft brewers. If all of the 1,950 craft brewers produced only ½ million barrels of beer each year, they could easily cripple the large beer manufacturers with an influx of 975 million barrels of beer flooding the marketplace. But, the vast majority of craft brewers would never want to do that. The Craft Beer Way The craft brewers in the United States and around the world have a completely different take on what it means to brew beer. Dogfish Head craft beer was said to only have .0002% of the market share of beer sales in the United States. According to brewersassociation.org, Dogfish Head craft beer ranked 12th in the nation in 2011, based upon the number of sales for a craft brewery. That is truly amazing, how a company ranked 12th in the whole country in craft beer sales still only has .0002% of the total market share of the beer industry. However, the owner of the company said that he would never want to grow like the large beer companies have. He is more concerned about each and every bottle of beer being the best beer possible, rather than worrying too much about how many cases he is able to send out the door. As a whole, craft beer makers try to capture their piece of the market through differentiation of their products and not through advertising like the large beer companies.
