Southwest Airlines Case
Southwest Airlines Case Study
1. Company Overview
Southwest airlines began in 1967 as a low cost, low fare, customer friendly air service shuttling
passengers between San Antonio, Dallas and Houston, Texas. Founded by Rollin King and Herb
Kelleher, Southwest moved from a small commuter transport of 18 round trip flights within Texas
to a bustling market share leader providing more domestic flights than any other airline within the
industry. Within two years of its first flight the airline was able to report profits in a trend that has
continued since 1973, despite industry downturns, economic recessions and intense rivalry attacks.
No longer the quirky underdog, Southwest has established itself as the low fare, low cost industry ...

Marketing Research Project Proposal
Marketing Research Project Proposal I proposed to do my final course project on market research
on service quality at Starbucks Coffee restaurants.
Background on Company Beginning in 1971 with only one shop in Settle s historic Pike Place
Market for coffee and tea, Starbucks has managed to become one of the most successful companies
in the world. It has become number one in the coffee industry. As of June 2012 Starbucksowns
19,763 coffee shops in 59 countries which includes 12,848 in the United States, 1,264 in Canada,
973 in Japan, 778 in Great Britain, 621 in China, 441 in South Korea, 350 in Mexico and 269 in

In order to make statistical research by using questionnaires, the formal standardized
questionnaires type must be followed. Meeting the research objectives is the aim of a
successful survey. For the purpose of examining the service quality in Starbucks store in the area
of Northwest Indiana, 10 different closed ended questions will be used. By doing this the
respondents are going to have the option of choosing from the given alternatives. By giving this
kind of questionnaire the information that is going to be gathered is easier to analyze, bearing
in mind that specific answers are needed for statistical research. The questions that are included
are from various types such as: Dichotomous questions (influencing audience to reply with
specific answers like Yes/No, True/False or Agree/Disagree responses). Example of
questionnaire as follows: 1. Age Group amp; Occupation ( This will be the only open ended
question on the survey) 2. How often do you visit Starbucks? ( Here I would ask 1 2 times per
week, 3 4 times per week and so on) 3. What products do you purchase? ( Multiple answers given
to choose from) 4. Are you currently satisfied with the menu selections? 5. How satisfied are you
with the cleanliness of the store? 6. How satisfied are you with the staff? 7. How convient is the
locations of the Starbucks store? 8. How

Ambush Tim OBrien Analysis
War is a place where deaths, and unimaginable tragedies happen. If you speak to anyone who has
been part of a war, they most likely do not enjoy reminiscing and telling stories of it. That is
because war is a traumatic place, where the things soldiers see is so awful, that it should not be
repeated. In the short story Ambush by Tim O Brien, man s young daughter knew her dad
served in the army, this knowledge sparked her curiosity. This curiosity led her to ask her dad if
he has killed anyone, he denies doing anything of that sort. The story is him telling her the truth
when she is older of what actually happened. There are three messages that can be derived from
Tim O Brien s short story Ambush death is awful, and traumatic, also that death is sometimes
necessary, finally war changes people. Death is awful and traumatic, that is a message that can
be derived from the short story Ambush by Tim O Brien. The worst crime that a human can
commit is murdered, that is because human life is invaluably precious. Most people realize this
fact, and that is why war is so hard on soldiers. Killing someone is probably the most traumatic
thing in the world, that s why some soldiers come back with post traumatic stress. Those soldiers
can not handle the guilt that comes along with killing someone. In the story Ambush the soldier
kills a man while on watch of a camp, with a grenade. He seriously regrets this, before the grenade
even went off he wished that he could take it back.

Elements Of A Short Story
Short stories can be bland and boring. As you read some of them, you can feel emotion or just read
a boring story about how something changed their life, but these three stories are interesting
because they develop horror. These short stories use different elements to create horror. The Tell
Tale Heart, A Rose for Emily, , and The Lottery develop horror/gothic elements.
First, The Tell Tale Heart develops horror by having an unreliable crazy narrator. For example, we
see his psyche in the introduction of Edgar Allan Poe s short story. I heard all things in the heaven
and earth. I heard many things in hell. How, then, am I mad? (par. 1). This gives the audience the
insight into the narrator s mind; therefore, the narrator has some sort of schizophrenia that causes
him to not hear, think, or behave correctly. As the narrator talks to the reader he thinks he is not
crazy and that his thoughts are normal. Next, the short story is written in first person point of
view which makes the story way more interesting and you see how mad this character is. I grew
furious as I gazed upon it (par. 9). In first person point of view the reader can almost imagine the
whole situation as the narrator is in the old man s room looking at his vulture eye. Plus, the narrator
killing the old man was premeditated, and that the narrator was in the man s house to murder him
due to his mental health issues. The psycho narrator in The Tell Tale Heart develops horror in this
short story.

Traditional Techniques For Sampling And Estimating...
Traditional techniques for sampling and estimating population characteristics require that sample
selection is done with a known probability. However, for a hard to reach population this is
impossible. There is no list or registry from which to create a sampling frame or if there is a list,
a random sampling can yield low number of eligible respondents since it s often non representative
of the intended target population.1 In addition, it can be extremely difficult to locate members of
this population due to social stigmas particularly in places with strict social norms that are dictated
by religious practices or within a geographically wide spread small group.2 Examples of such
populations are; the homeless, prostitutes, drug addicts,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Chain referral a variant of snowballing is also often used interchangeably to represent
snowballing in studies.5 This method relies on a series of participant referrals (multiple
snowballing) to others who have experienced the intended characteristics by strategically
accessing multiple networks to expand the reach of social network in other to obtain a
representative estimate.6,7 Respondent driven sampling (RDS) Respondent driven sampling is
much like snowballing method, that also relies on members who form interlinked social
networks. Unlike a conventional probability sampling design, where each unit has a known and
constant probability of selection, RDS is based on sampling design selection procedure that is
affected by the discovered network in the population.8 11 RDS is predicated on the recognition
that peers are better able to locate and recruit peers whom they know as members of a hard to
reach social network. It can be implemented through the following 3 key steps: Planning Phase: The
first step in this phase is familiarization of the extent of the networks in the population to be
studied. Next step is identification of seeds chosen in a non random fashion,

Analysis Of Katherine Mansfield s Miss Brill Essay
5.Analyse how the writer(s) use(s) language techniques for a particular purpose in a written text
or texts you have studied. Katherine Mansfield uses an extensive range of language techniques to
portray the lonely and slightly delusional spinster; Miss Brill. The story of Miss Brill is an
extremely good example of how a writer can use different language techniques to reveal a variety
of aspects of the character.
The author uses characterisation through the language techniques to reveal a variety of truths to the
reader about Miss Brill s personality. Mansfield uses the language techniques to express the theme
of connectedness throughout the story. Mansfield also uses symbolism, setting and point of views
by the different characters in her story to create a clear scene and atmosphere for the readers.
Symbolism is very important throughout the short story as it illustrates a vivid understanding of
who Miss Brill is, which is easily expressed through the relationship between Miss Brill and her fox
fur. BODY PARAGRAPH #1
Miss Brill s fur is an extension of herself. The fox fur throughout the novel thoroughly symbolises
Miss Brill and her life in a variety of ways. Miss Brill whom has lost all sense of connectedness
throughout the story is able to strongly connect to the fox fur on a very ominous level. Mansfield
makes it clear that Miss Brill lives her life through the fox fur; by links of characteristics between
the fur and Miss Brill, which are fairly similar.

Essay On Long Term Care
Long term care system
America dates its generations from 1946 to 1964 which is a period after the Second World War.
Children born in this era are known as baby boomers and constitute about 20% of the American
population. In 2011, the youngest baby boomers turned 50 while the oldest have already retired.
This is a massive retirement and has a lot of implications to the entire country. If projections are
done to estimate the number of aged people in the American society by 2030 or 2050, it is
undoubtedly that there will be millions of them. This change in the age structure will implicate the
family structure, policy makers, businesses and mostly the healthcare system. An increased number
of aged people in the population requires additional healthcare. The American government runs
various entitlement programs that are meant to provide financial assistance, healthcare, legal
assistance and nutrition to the elderly people. These programs include Medicare, Medicaid, social
security benefits and supplemental security income. This paper seeks to discuss these entitlement
programs, both at the federal, state and local levels.

Bleaching Of Blue Lab Report
Determination of the Rate Law for the Bleaching of Blue One Objective
The objective of this investigation is to determine how the concentrations of the reagents in the
reaction between Blue One dye and Sodium Hypochlorite (bleach) will affect the rate for the
reaction. This will be done by through the determination of the rate law with respect to the orders
of reaction for the reagents as well as the overall order of the reaction.
Introduction
The question for this investigation came about when my class learned about how colorimetry can
be used to detect the kinetics of a reaction. I find this process engaging since I appreciate how
colorimeters represent the human perception of colour; likewise, my interest in how dye can be
altered in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If the natural log of the absorbance creates a linear trend, then the solution has an order of
reaction of one; meaning that doubling the solution of the dye, in turn, doubles the rate. If the
inverse of the absorbance values (1/absorbance) creates a linear trend, then the order of reaction in
respect to the dye is two. Meaning that doubling the concentration of the dye, quadruples the rate
of the reaction. Which transformation renders the most accurate linear trend will be calculated by
plotting the variables against time and finding the coefficient of determination (R2 value) for the
line of best fit. This values states how much of the variance in the y variable, the natural log of the
absorbance or the inverse of the absorbance, is accounted for by the least squares regression line
based on the x variable time.
To find the order of the reaction in respect to bleach, the volume of the bleach can be doubled and
the rate of the reaction examined. This is because the concentration of bleach cannot be detected
by the colorimeter; hence, experimental rate values are to be determined. The rate is calculated by
taking the slope of the least squares regression line based on whichever y variable results in the
closest linear

Essay On African American Family
Although most African Americans in the United States are Protestant, 78% compared with only
51% of the United States as a whole. I will note that Protestantism in the U.S. and in the black
community is not homogenous. It is divided among three main steam traditions, evangelical
Protestant churches, mainline Protestant churches and historically black Protestant churches.
Other similarities that African Americans and Lebanese Americans share are their love for food
and family. African Americans love to eat, as do Lebanese Americans and what better way to do
this than at a family gathering. I have several Lebanese families that live on my block and at least
monthly they have a family gathering that includes each family member arriving with food (usually
potluck style). Ironically, my family also gathers frequently and has potluck dinners. Both cultures

The main product lines of the industry are carbonated soft drinks, fruit beverages, bottled water, so
called functional beverages (including energy drinks and ready to drink teas and coffees), and sport
drinks. The soft drink industry is made up of two major manufacturing systems that fall into
distinct categories: (1) flavoring syrup and concentrate manufacturing and (2) soft drink
manufacturing. The supply chain is largely dependent on the syrup producer, as this is the
driver for most downstream operations. The majority of the bottled soft drinks follow a similar
product life cycle, moving from syrup producer, to bottler, to distributor, to merchant, to final
consumer. The principal raw materials used in the beverage industry are cans and ends, glass
bottles, PET bottles and caps, paper products, sweeteners, juice, fruit, water and other ingredients.
Major retailers associated with the beverage industry include Wal Mart, Target and Kroger. In
addition to retailers, beverage manufacturers also depend on foodservice customers such as

Stimulus behaviour: Mahir (3 years old) actively participating in regular routine and play
experience on his own, with minimal or no interaction with others. Mahir demonstrate he has the
verbal language skills when he is pretend play with toy cars, and he shows receptive language skills
when interact with educators. However, Mahir s use of language in interaction is limited, he
requires improvement in language skill in order to develop better quality friendship (Porter, 2016).
Mahir display solitary play throughout the day, he was fully engaged in the activity by himself.
When other children talks to Mahir or initiate to play with him, Mahir does not seem to notice
other children, and maintains focus on what is he doing. According to Porter (2016), at age 2 3
years, children begin to seek out peers in earnest and they are more able to initiate interactions
(p. 157). Those evidence of social play development was absent in Mahir s case, as he display the
preference to play alone. Being socially isolated over time can have negative impact on children.
For example, depression or reactive aggression (Porter, 2016). Conversely, positive relationship are
beneficial to children s developments (Porter, 2016). Therefore, it is important to support Mahir s
social development.

The Ethics Of Animal Testing By Robin Mckie
The ethics of animal tests: inside the lab where marmosets are given Parkinson s by Robin McKie
examines the situation of marmosets who are subjected to testing and experiments. McKie uses
several literary techniques such as statistics, case studies and emotive language in his article to not
only communicate the cruel and unjustifiable nature of animal testing, but also the necessity we
humans have for it; while experimenting on animals can be considered immoral, it s still a much
better alternative than using humans.
Emotive language is used several times throughout the article. McKie describes the marmosets as
being no bigger than cats. This automatically causes us to think of the marmosets in the same way
that they think of cats; ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The reader assumes from what McKie wrote about animal testing that the researchers must be
callous individuals who are indifferent to animal suffering, but in truth they have an innate love of
animals. McKie provides evidence of this by describing how they end up knitting hammocks for the
animals and having favourites. He mentions an interview with a King s College technician which
supports his evidence. A different employee also claimed that researching on marmosets had
allowed them to develop medicines which have allowed patients to run their lives normally. Prior
to King s College s experiments on marmosets, Parkinson s patients were a mass of uncontrollable
movement, jerking and waving their hands and arms. McKie convinces the reader of why, while
animal testing can be seen as unethical and wrong, it still is very important in the medical field. I
feel that the life of a human has greater value than that of an animal, and that in this case the means
justifies the end. By sacrificing hundreds of animals for experiments we end up saving thousands of
humans.
Throughout his article, McKie uses a great variety of phrases and techniques to strikingly portray
the reality of animal testing and the lesser known activities which happen behind the scenes. He
powerfully communicates both the negative and positive features of using animals in experiments
without definitively taking a side, thus he lets us form our own opinions on the morality of animal
testing. Personally, I am a proponent of the use of animals in medical experiments solely because I
am convinced that they are the most reliable and accurate was to gauge the effectiveness of

Characteristics Of Veristic Surrealism
Surrealism As the world began healing from World War I, modern artists decided to listen to
their subconscious minds. Surrealism was a new style of art that formed from Dadaism. The
leader of surrealism, AndrГ© Breton, believed that because surrealism required unique thoughts,
it showed an active mind. Not only is surrealism found in art, it is also found in theater,
literature, philosophy, and politics. The creation of surrealism is achieved by abstract or realistic
images that may be bursting with voice or cold and impersonal. Bending the principles of design
to give new feelings could create this feeling. After World War I, European artists explored their
unconscious minds to create compositions that challenged common beliefs of artistic and
emotional expression. Surrealism can be difficult to categorize due to the differences in styles and
methods of creation. The two main surrealism techniques, automatism and veristic surrealism, are
shown by various views of the conscious and unconscious. The focus of automatism is feelings.
The emphasis of theses artists is less analytical. They think of their art as a way to connect the
subconscious to the conscious. This usually results in a lack of form. Veristic surrealism is a way
to link spiritual realities to the material world. They used objects as metaphors to show inner
reality and to understand the real world. Dadaism was the style that later morphed into surrealism.
It was a coping mechanism after World War I. The Dada

Supreme Court Decision Making Essay
Name Instructor s Name Course Date The Supreme Court as a National Policy MakerThe
polarized politics of the Roberts Court article examines the Roberts Court and its relationship to
the Obama s government after the results of midterm elections in 2014. It starts by analyzing
the structure of the Court during the past 40 years. The court has been structured by electoral
politics and it has been seen to be more conservative, divided and polarized in its decision
making and this reflects the politics of the post 1968 electoral regime. The article also looks at
the impact of the 2014 midterm election. The article shows that the control of the senate by
Republican will lead to constrain to the president s ability to shape the federal courts proceeding
(Clayton and Salamone 739). There is likelihood of the Republican leaving the composition of the
current Supreme Court intact and also leave Justice Kennedy as the pivotal swing vote. It will also
elevate the Court as a campaign issue in the coming 2016 presidential elections. The division and
polarization of Roberts Court... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The cases in the court involve alternatives which completely disagree with the society such as in
cases of segregation and economic regulation making the setting of the case political. However,
Court s decisions rests upon the fiction that it is not a political institution but a legal one which
causes further problems rather than solving the already existing problem (Dahl 282). Those who
believe that the Court does only one role of making policies then this raises the question of who
gets what and why. There are two different conflicting criteria in determining and appraising the
role of the Court. The article says that every conflict in a given society is as a result of dispute
between the majority who are eligible and the minority or among the minorities

Competitive Strategy Of Toyota
By 2007, Toyota was leading its industry as the largest automotive manufacturer in the world.
Operating under a strong growth strategy, their reputation for exceptional quality and high safety
ratings coupled with operational efficiency promoted their competitive advantage. Furthermore,
Toyota was principally the symbol of excellence and a benchmark for every other company.
When examining their strategy under Porter s model Toyota maintains a strong combined plan
focusing on both cost leadership and broad differentiation. Through the process of lean daily
management and just in time delivery Toyota led the manufacturing world with a distinguished
level of efficiency. Examining their success and processes, manufacturing was transformed and
Toyota was the envy of many. Additionally, through innovation Toyota actively sought
differentiation as a generic tactic. Hybrid technology was successfully implemented into their
Prius model vehicles and the Prius became the first, pioneering mass produced vehicle of its
kind. Challenging all the company stood for, in 2009, Toyota faced a series of recalls that would
test their resolve and force the organization to examine their culture, methods and overall
practices. The end of 2009 brought a recall of over 3.8 million vehicles for Toyota. Triggered by
a deadly accident from an apparent stuck accelerator, reports of similar instances began pouring in.
Publicity was brutal following the ordeal and the repercussions for Toyota were

Vince Lombardi s Life And Accomplishments
The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of
knowledge, but rather a lack of will (Lincoln Library 85). This was one of many quotes Vince
Lombardi has spoken throughout his professional life. Vince was born on June 11, 1913 in
Brooklyn New York. At the start of his football fame, he played fullback at St. Francis Prep High
School. After high school, he went to Fordham University in Bronx, New York. At Fordham he
was part of the most feared offensive line called the Seven Blocks of Granite (Lincoln Library
84). He then moved to assistant coach at St. Cecilia High School in New Jersey. After this,
Lombardi coached his first NFL team, the New York Giants. Although he was not the head
coach, his influence as the offensive coach had a significant impact on the team. He provided
insight of trades to improve the areas of the defense. A good defense will help the club s morale
(Lincoln Library 84 85). In the year of 1959 the Green Bay Packersin Wisconsin needed a head
coach desperately. This was where Lombardi was most famous. when he first got to the Packers, he

about was having to grow up with her parents in Togo. She stated that both her parent s jobs had
to do with business and her father was a factor in her decision to become a nurse. Since her
father was the city s director of the Red Cross organization, he partially cajoled her into
becoming a nurse. This in fact paid off as she went on to volunteer at Red Cross and studied there
until she obtained her certificate. She even quoted Now I have the desire to do those kinds of

Behavior and Relationship Observation
Behavior observation Conformity is a general concept that refers to changing one s behavior
which is caused by another person or group.in other words it results to someone acting in some
way due to the influence they got from others (Kenrick, Neuberg, Cialdini, 2007). For the
purpose of this paper, I have made the assumption that the people I am observing are a couple
taking into account the preformed ideas of how couples do behave. I have also made an
assumption that that they are in a love relationship and they are married. For people who are in a
relationship they have to try and understand each other. They also have to conform their behaviors
according to their partners so that they can understand each other more in the relationship.
Conformity is not an easy concept especially when one is required to make major behavior
changes in their lives. Therefore there are pre conformity behaviors that could be observed in the
man before he fully demonstrated a conforming behavior. The pre conforming behavior was such as
constantly forgetting what he was expected to do since this was a relatively new thing for him.
There were instances where he totally forgot or did what was expected of him halfway without
completion. There are several types of conformities which include; normative conformity.
Normative conformity involves an individual changing their behavior so that they can fit well into
a particular group (Kenrick, Neuberg, Cialdini, 2007). Normative influence comes

A Muslim immigrant shoots his two daughters to death on concerns about their western lifestyle .
The people of the United States are firm believers of this country being the land of the free. Yes,
the U.S. has problems of their own to worry about, for example the poverty and all the hate crimes
going on, but the United States has historically taken on the responsibility on aiding other countries

The Obama administration did a good job of bolstering Jordan against chaos from Iraq and Syria
so far, but stepping back from the region could still stir up some problems with the neighboring
countries of Jordan such as Lebanon, Turkey, Tunisia, and Egypt. Although it being risky for the
United States, it may not always work to be involved in other countries because of cost and
resources that would be used to stabilize the foreign countries rather than reconstructing them. All
of these countries want and need western economic, diplomatic, technical, and military assistance,
but in order to make that happen, the U.S. needs to get rid of the root of the problem, stating that
no matter how many terrorists the United States kills, if these civil wars don t stop, more young
men will turn to terrorism (Pollack). There are urgent requests from the Yemeni government for
economic reconstruction, which is in a deadly competition with Al Quaeda (C. Chosky J. Chosky).
Hence, the United States could do a better job in foreign nations.
If the American people were at risk of a failed economy, surely American allies would come to the
rescue and help, moreover if the U.S. goes into other Nations, they gain allies along with providing
the other country aid and support. Although the United States has had a respectable amount of

They are complications in international trade. Classical views promise the benefits to both
countries from trade but the complications are when you look closer at how that trade might
actually hurt our country, their country, and both of our countries. For example, sweatshop labor
can benefit manufacturers and customers but what about the people working in them, some of
them would consider their labor exploitation by force and others consider it exploitation by choice.
This is the division, their views. Another complication is wolves in sheep s clothing meaning

One in particular question is could there be an end of the business cycle? To start, during that
period that stemmed for over two years of low inflation, low unemployment, and relatively steady
growth in the rich world really made it seem like it was possibly the end of the business cycle.
But then when the Financial Crisis of 2008 occurred and the Great Depression seemed to appear as
dГ©jГ vu. A bad monetary policy by the Federal Reserve was a big reason for the Great
Depression. Banks and other financial systems help circulate money and credit throughout an
economy, so it would be no surprise that a failure in the financial system can ruin an entire
economy. And the problem with the financial system is that it s stuck between market failure
and government failure, all of these things point to a possible end to the business cycle.
However, we re still a long way from the end of the business cycle even though monetary and
fiscal policies have improved greatly since the Great Depression. Another question posed was,
could there be an end to poverty? To start, to be realistic poverty isn t going to end in the 21st
century. In low and middle income countries, poverty is so prevalent that even the idea of an end
to poverty seems intangible in any near future. However economists have presented a new concept

Conspiracy Theories Behind Marilyn Monroe s Death
The news of Marilyn Monroe s death began to spread. Newspapers were seen everywhere with
her bright, smiling face and the giant, bolded letters of death stamped on the front pages. Even
The New York Times published a newspaper article titled Marilyn Monroe Dead, Pills Near. In this
article, Dr. Theodore J. Curphey, the coroner, declares Monroe s deathto have not been from natural
causes: After an autopsy the Los Angeles coroner reported that Miss Monroe s was not a natural
death. He attributed it to a drug ( Marilyn MonroeDead, Pills Near ). Her death seemed to be the
typical case of overdosing on barbiturates with traces of chloral hydrate which are both sedatives

There is no actual confirmation besides untrustworthy gossip that Marilyn Monroe succeeded
past those attempted phone calls. Her calls to Washington were never accepted, she was always
sent to voicemail. Even if it were true; if she did manage to make contact and had an affair with
either/both of the Kennedy s, her autopsy report negates any sort of foul play. Expert medical
examiner Dr. Judy Melinek confirms that Monroe s autopsy aligns with the signs of self
induced overdosed. Any sort of needle or forced injection would have been spotted by the
coroner immediately, If drugs are injected by a needle you can typically see a needle puncture
mark in the location of the injection, and this would be more likely to be visible if they were
injected against the will of the person, as they would be fighting/resisting (Melinek, 2018). Dr.
Melinek also points out that it would be quite normal that no residue from the medication would
have been found in Monroe s stomach if enough time between her death and her arrival to the
morgue had passed, The absence of residue found in the stomach does not mean the drugs were
not ingested. Drugs are designed to dissolve in the fluid and acidic stomach contents and no
residue would be detected within several hours of ingestion (Melinek, 2018). With this expert
testimony confirming Marilyn Monroe s autopsy reports as legitimate leaves the official cause of

Positive Impact Of Christopher Columbus Discoveries
Positive Impact of Christopher Columbus Discoveries
The world is a better place because of Christopher Columbus important discoveries in the New
World. His explorations resulted in the vast expansion of property for Europe, the exchange of
goods and cultures between countries and a change in the worldview of geography. Columbus s
explorations were the catalyst for unprecedented trade known as the Columbian Exchange, which
started the exchange of goods and ideas that would last for centuries and change the world forever.
His discoveries unearthed new perspectives and created a mix of diverse biology between Europe
and the New World. These exchanges changed the world we live in today and will continue to fuel
centuries of exploration and discoveries. The Columbian Exchange was the beginning of the
expansion of trade between the New World and Europe. The Columbian Exchange started the flow

Columbus voyage, along with the many voyages that followed, disrupted much of the biological

Prisons And Prison Rights
Prisoners deserve more rights than what they are subjected to. Yes they may be in prison but how
would you feel if some of your basic rights were taken away. They are serving their time for what
they did so why not allow them to have more rights? Allowing them to have more rights could be
more beneficial than you think.
Allowing them to vote is just one of the rights that I think they deserve to have. Taking away a
prisoner s right to vote, is taking away human rights. Taking away the right to vote dehumanizes
prisoners. A prisoner s rehabilitation as a safe, responsible and productive member of society
must include the most basic right of the democratic process. The right to choose who governs us.
If a president can pardon people from jail, then they should be able to vote for who could possibly
pardon them. Yes people who are in prisonare usually in their for over a year and you may not
think not voting is not a big deal but what if they are only in prison for two years. It is unfair to
restrict them from voting because when they get out of prison that president will still be in office.
Voting builds stronger communities of people who are more likely to participate in the democratic
process. Similarly, inmates who are able to vote will feel more connected and invested in their
communities, when they are released. If they are not released at least they can vote for their family
and what would be best for them. When you vote you are not just thinking about

Electricity And Its Effects On The Future
In the last decade, many issues have been raised related to our planet s health, because of the high
demand for electricity. People are used to flipping a switch and turning on lights, or turning on the
TV for entertainment, using the microwave, the refrigerator, and our heating system. These would
not be possible with out electrical power. People may not think of coalwhen they enjoy all these
conveniences, but coal is the primary source of power plants in United States and around the world.
Electricity is part of our daily lives, which makes our lives easier since it has been discovered, but
nobody thought about the dangerous consequences we will face, now and in the future. In addition,
most people do not know how electricity is produced; they just know how to consume it. Burning
coal in giant boilers to generate steam that produces electricity and power other industries.
However, the side effects of the use of coal to process energy have caused massive damage to
Mother Nature and our environment that is escalating to the next level. This is the destruction of
our environment. Electricity is primary conveniences as we continue develop our ways of living.
But people must find alternative ways to get power without damaging our environment.
In Coal s history nobody knows when the human race began to use coal as a source of power. In
addition, heat has been produced by wood and has been used longer than coal. The Romans, Greek

Broadway and theaters managed to stay afloat. Its popularity began to surge, and there were 200 to

The Tragedy Of Queen Mary
In a country already unstable, the news of Queen Mary s actions during her reign shook the
rickety balance between chaos and peace. Thirty years after King Henry VIII broke away from
the Catholic Church, installed a new religion into English culture, and citizens lived in a country
where Catholicism was outlawed, the Marian Era began. The Marian Era lasted from 1553
1558, and will forever be remembered as a dark and dangerous time. If one was asked who they
knew from the English monarchy during the 16th Century, many will answer Bloody Mary .
Everyone knows about the dreaded Queen Bloody Mary, but hardly anyone really knows why.
Sparking the question: Why was Queen Mary one of the most hated queens in English history?
The lasting hate from Queen Mary s reign was due in part by her attempts to revive Catholicism in
a Protestant England, killing a mass of English citizens, and her overall failures as a queen.
Much to the protest of many of England s Protestant citizens, one of Mary s main goals as queen
was to restore Catholicism as England s primary, and only, religion. Even though Kings Henry VIII
and Edward both outlawed Catholicism in England, Mary still practiced in secret. Thirty years
prior, when King Henry VIII renounced the Catholic Church, he created his own; therefore creating
a brand new religion: Protestantism. As a result, Catholicism was made illegal and considered
heretics if found attending Mass or accepting Communion (Royal Household 1). Mary s first

Picasso Female Complex
Pablo Picasso: The Female Complex Many artists develop their works from their most
compelling moments in life, whether they are filled with excruciating pain or unspeakable joy.
Pablo Picasso creates work based on a multitude of influences in his life, from the suicide of his
best friend to the rising of his career (Bio). However, a single theme reoccurs throughout his life
that most would argue causes him to create some of the greatest paintings of his time: women.
Critics shaped the different phases of his art into periods such as the Blue Period, Rose Period,
CubismPeriod, Surrealist Period, and Self Portrait Period (Bio). His art was manipulated based
on the dominant state of mind he was in during these stages of life, and many of the emotions
had to do with the women he was involved with at the time. Though one might think that an artist
who places such a passionate focus on women must deeply admire and respect them, Picasso
does not fit into this standard. He actually felt a very strong sense of superiority to females,
painting them as objects: cold, faceless, and purely created for sexual satisfaction (Withers 1).
However, evidence strongly suggests that he probably feared them more than anything else. Every
single one of his periods of art are heavily ruled by paintings of women, particularly nude, that tell
a story about an experience he had; if he was so affected by women that he spent countless hours
painting about it, there had to have been more going on

One of the great holocausts ever committed against a race of people on this planet was the Stolen
Generations of children from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander decent. The Bringing Them

Torres Strait Islander Children from Their Families however was an extremely pivotal event in the
fight for civil rights for Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders as it initiated recognition,

through the trauma caused by the Stolen Generations and the background information regarding the
report.
The brutal practises of past government went unrecognised until the Bringing Them Home report.
The Stolen Generations was the forcible removal of approximately 14,700 Aboriginal and Torres
Strait Islander children per year from 1880s to 1970s by the Australia Federal government and
church missions to eradicate the Aboriginal problem . In removing the Indigenous children, white
people stole Aboriginal people s future. Language, tradition, knowledge, dances and spirituality
could only live on if passed on to their children (Source6). Sir Ronald Wilson, developer of the

All of his actions are calculated and orderly, much like a soldier s would be, showing that he is
acting rather than feeling or thinking about what he is doing. Anytime a distressing emotion or
thought was close to surfacing, he would quickly dismiss it or find a distraction such as
drinking coffee, Nick drank the coffee, the coffee according to Hopkins. The coffee was bitter.
Nick laughed. It made a good ending to the story. His mind was starting to work. He knew he
could choke it because he was tired enough. He spilled the coffee out of the pot and shook the
grounds loose into the fire. He lit a cigarette and went inside the tent (Hemingway). For the most
part, Nick is able to suppress his mind from working, and as Alex Vernon states, Nick manages
over the course of this very long trip to suppress his memory and imagination almost entirely . . .
Nick has mastered what Hemingway later calls the greatest gift a soldier can acquire, the ability
to suspend your imagination and live completely in the very second of the present minute with no
before and no after (Vernon). However, as the story progresses, Nick s thoughts begin to increase
in length and depth. For instance, as he draws closer to the swamp towards the conclusion of the
story, it states, He felt a reaction against deep wading with the water deepening up under his

Holland Culture Research Paper
Holland Culture During WWll Holland homes usually have small front doors and big windows
that stand out. Their houses are full of large amounts of furniture, plants, and flowers, they re
crowded but clean and in order. Holland houses are packed together and are highly populated.
The Dutch style appeared after Spain and Holland were divided in 1581. Rich Dutch sellers
started building fairly small but impressive houses, that were high, deep, and thin overlooking a
canal, in Amsterdam. Modern became the main style after World War ll, when the prices of
houses started rising. Rotterdam is one example of this. Rotterdam was severely damaged after
World War ll, the main part of the city was rebuilt by Americans. The American style was steel
and glass skyscrapers. Hollands lands were divided in rectangles and mondrian like squares to
save room. The Netherlands have a complicated network for railroads and thicker bicycle paths.

not have solved the Viet Minh s ultimate goal of a unified Vietnam without French rule it did get
the snowball rolling downhill toward that goal with the final victory of the Communist forces over
the Republic of Vietnam in 1975. Dien Bien Phu was important because it was the battle that

by Japan during the war. Their opposition was a group called the Viet Minh, which was led by

Great War Dbq Essay
There were many underlying causes of the Great War, one of the primary reasons was the creation
of alliances between countries. Another reason, which was helped by the alliances, was the fact
that Serbia killed the Austria Hungary archduke, causing the two of them to go to war. Altogether
many people in the world were excited to go to war, wanting to prove how strong their country is
and thinking it would be a quick war.
Even before the war started there were plotting and alliances made. Germany, Austria Hungary, and
Italy made the triple alliance (Doc D), and the United Kingdom, France, and Russia formed the
Triple Entente (Doc D). If another country would attack one of the countries in one of these
alliances the other countries would employ all their forces to help, beginning an all out battle (Doc
E). Along with this because they were thriving so well due to imperialism, many countries decided
to build up their military to make sure they stayed strong (Doc L).
The alliances were made in part to protect Serbia and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

saying like this that drove the countries to war, creating a great deal of nationalism, many even

waiting for it, however when spirits dropped during the war the nations attempted to keep the
countries excited with propaganda like songs and posters (Doc H) and it worked, keeping people

Theodore Roethke The Slough Analysis
The Slough, by Theodore Roethke, spoke to me in a way I could relate. Based on my experience,
I felt a sense of random reverie ending with a search for answers to timeless, unanswered
questions. Furthermore, I have a passion for nature and I like how the poet used association with
flora and fauna to provide a visual display among the confusion.
The other deciding factor was I found this poem easy to read at a nice steady pace with rhythm,
rhyme and minimal variations in pitch and volume required. The poet refers to himself in a third
person; therefore, leads me to believe he was pondering life within his thoughts, rather than actually
speaking aloud. The words came across as random thoughts, a daydream of sorts. Therefore, with

make it your own for much less. While Jackie s style was style based on certain clothing items
and ideas from previous decades there were a few clothing items that made this style stand out.
One item Jackie wore frequently was the pill box hat. This style of hate was not previously very
popular but with Jackie in the spotlight it gained more recognition. Instyle Magazine stated that
Jackie often wore well tailored skirts and white gloves. Her style often featured items that were
very sleek and feminine. Jackie also had an immense love for designer clothing. As she became

Cash Management Comparison
Cash Management Comparison Many organizations make a financial goal to minimize the
amount of cash on hand on a monthly basis. This goal is based on attempting to reduce the
amount of non earning assets for the company. Cash on hand that is not required to meet a
specific need could be placed in an interest bearing account or used to pay down on a credit
balance, also reducing the amount of interest a company would have to pay on a loan.
Minimizing cash balances as well as having accurate knowledge of when cash moves into and out
of the company can improve overall corporate profitability. (Block Hirt, 2004, pg. 175). As

Essay On Foster Care
Foster care systems have lots of flaws and problems. These flaws impact the children severely.
Some problems in foster care is abuse. Types of abuse that are inflicted on the children are mental,
physical, and sexual. Children also often develop social and learning problems when in the foster
system.
There are many types of foster care but only three will be named. Private fostering is one of them.
It is when a child under the age of 16, or under 18 if disabled, is cared by someone who is not their
parent or a close relative. This is often a private arrangement made between a parent and a carer for
28 days or more. This is often the best type of foster care.

Determinism And Its Effects On Life Paths
In this world our race, location, family, and social class are already predetermined. We do not get
to choose the position we are born into. Since we live in a world where most of our choices are
made for us, some of us are luckier than others. Some people are born to better circumstances in
life paths because of luckier predestined factors and qualities afforded to them. Because of the
status in which we are born into, the journey we set ourselves on in life is a preconceived path
that can be very cumbersome to deviate from. The path may be hard to digress from, but it is still
possible for humans to determine their own outcomes and life paths, because we have free willand
free will allows us to do this. Determinismis the belief that our lives are already decided and set in
motion, and that we can change our actions but are unable to change our destiny that is already
set forth. However, free will is the ability to make our own decisions and set our own paths in
life. Similar to the belief that we decide how we end up and what we do in life, some Christians
believe God gives us free will but he also has our ending fate already set in stone. This
perspective definitely conveys contradictions, because it states that we as people have control
over something that is already out of our control. As a spiritual individual, compared to that of
being religious, I believe we as people are put onto a set path based on social constructions that are
created by society.

Summary Of Angry Young Men By Aaron Kipnis
INTRODUCTION
This is a review of Angry Young Men , a book written by Aaron Kipnis, P.h.D. The book
highlights the issues arising with bad boys ; how they got to where they are right now (juvenile
hall, addiction centers, etc.), what changes we can make as a society and as care givers so that
this issue will get better, and how to help them change themselves for the improvement of
themselves and our society. Kipnis, is attempting to help solve the problem of how people
(teachers, counselors, parents, etc.) can better help young boys in need of support (angry,
addicted, Bad , etc.). In Kipnis book, he addresses the problems (angry young men) and gives a
list of examples or reasons in which they got here (bad home life, addiction, etc.) ... Show more

Future research might consist of more in depth information about how these bad boys got to
where they are now (detention centers, juvenile hall, foster care, etc.), perhaps looking at what
the boys might have found helpful to their positive rehabilitation. Probably the most effective
place to start further research would be with the programs that help these young men improve
themselves, whether that means getting them back in school if they have dropped out, helping
them with legal issues, or helping them with addiction, etc. If we could research these and
maybe follow an individual from start (admission to detention center) to finish (through these
services and hopefully back into society) we might be able to better see where our services are
falling short for these young men. Again, this is something that will always be an issue but what
we can do to fix it is try to become better at our approaches to these problems when they first
arise. Kipnis highlights this premise well in saying, Helping marked men become good men
generally requires a thoughtful, well developed, committed plan of action; leaders who work
well with challenging clients; wide access to resources; and vigorous support from community
institutions. (Kipnis pg. 207 208). There is no solution to this problem because there will
always be this issue in our society. So while this book did not offer a solution per say, it did offer
new information to be looked at in order to find more effective way to deal with these issues and
also gave great insight for parent s teachers, counselors, etc. dealing with an angry young man or

Breast Cancer Screening
An analysis of the effectiveness of population based screening for breast cancer.
Breast cancer is the leading cause of death due to cancer in women, with statistics from the USA
showing that one in eight women will develop the disease.1 Studies in the UK show that 90% of
women diagnosed in the early stages survive the disease, while this figure is only 15% if
diagnosed at a later stage illustrating the importance of an effective screening programme to reduce
mortality.2 In the following essay I will review various randomised control studies and cohort
studies in order to establish how nationwide screening programmes best reduce mortality, looking at
the targeted sector of the population and the methods in practice. I will also address ... Show more

With the majority of tumours being slow growing it has been established from various studies that
biennial screening is the most effective time frame. This is due to the identification of slow
growing tumours at an early enough stage for recovery and at the same time ensures a reduced rate
of false positives compared to annual mammograms.5 In addition, since the proportion of DCIS is
highest in younger women, screen detection of DCIS that may not be clinically significant could
be considered a further harm. 5 Therefore it is the woman s prerogative whether the risk of cancer
outweighs the possibility of coming into contact with the aforementioned harms.
With the implementation of mammograms as a population based screening program the targeted
population must be scrutinised, because although it is common practice for women over 40 to be
covered by health insurance for mammograms there are increasing numbers of women below that
age with breast cancer.

Founded by Rollin King and Herb Kelleher, Southwest moved from a small commuter transport of 18 round trip flights within Texas to a bustling market share leader providing more domestic flights than any other airline within the industry. Within two years of its first flight the airline was able to report profits in a trend that has continued since 1973, despite industry downturns, economic recessions and intense rivalry attacks. In order to make statistical research by using questionnaires, the formal standardized questionnaires type must be followed. Meeting the research objectives is the aim of a successful survey. For the purpose of examining the service quality in Starbucks store in the area of Northwest Indiana, 10 different closed ended questions will be used. By doing this the respondents are going to have the option of choosing from the given alternatives. By giving this kind of questionnaire the information that is going to be gathered is easier to analyze, bearing in mind that specific answers are needed for statistical research. The questions that are included are from various types such as: Dichotomous questions (influencing audience to reply with specific answers like Yes/No, True/False or Agree/Disagree responses). Example of questionnaire as follows: 1. Age Group amp; Occupation ( This will be the only open ended question on the survey) 2. How often do you visit Starbucks? • 4. Ambush Tim OBrien Analysis War is a place where deaths, and unimaginable tragedies happen. If you speak to anyone who has been part of a war, they most likely do not enjoy reminiscing and telling stories of it. That is because war is a traumatic place, where the things soldiers see is so awful, that it should not be repeated. In the short story Ambush by Tim O Brien, man s young daughter knew her dad served in the army, this knowledge sparked her curiosity. This curiosity led her to ask her dad if he has killed anyone, he denies doing anything of that sort. The story is him telling her the truth when she is older of what actually happened. There are three messages that can be derived from Tim O Brien s short story Ambush death is awful, and traumatic, also that death is sometimes necessary, finally war changes people. Death is awful and traumatic, that is a message that can be derived from the short story Ambush by Tim O Brien. The worst crime that a human can commit is murdered, that is because human life is invaluably precious. Most people realize this fact, and that is why war is so hard on soldiers. Killing someone is probably the most traumatic thing in the world, that s why some soldiers come back with post traumatic stress. Those soldiers can not handle the guilt that comes along with killing someone. In the story Ambush the soldier kills a man while on watch of a camp, with a grenade. He seriously regrets this, before the grenade even went off he wished that he could take it back. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Elements Of A Short Story Short stories can be bland and boring. As you read some of them, you can feel emotion or just read a boring story about how something changed their life, but these three stories are interesting because they develop horror. These short stories use different elements to create horror. The Tell Tale Heart, A Rose for Emily, , and The Lottery develop horror/gothic elements. First, The Tell Tale Heart develops horror by having an unreliable crazy narrator. For example, we see his psyche in the introduction of Edgar Allan Poe s short story. I heard all things in the heaven and earth. I heard many things in hell. How, then, am I mad? (par. 1). This gives the audience the insight into the narrator s mind; therefore, the narrator has some sort of schizophrenia that causes him to not hear, think, or behave correctly. As the narrator talks to the reader he thinks he is not crazy and that his thoughts are normal. Next, the short story is written in first person point of view which makes the story way more interesting and you see how mad this character is. I grew furious as I gazed upon it (par. 9). In first person point of view the reader can almost imagine the whole situation as the narrator is in the old man s room looking at his vulture eye. Plus, the narrator killing the old man was premeditated, and that the narrator was in the man s house to murder him due to his mental health issues. The psycho narrator in The Tell Tale Heart develops horror in this short story. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Traditional Techniques For Sampling And Estimating... Traditional techniques for sampling and estimating population characteristics require that sample selection is done with a known probability. However, for a hard to reach population this is impossible. There is no list or registry from which to create a sampling frame or if there is a list, a random sampling can yield low number of eligible respondents since it s often non representative of the intended target population.1 In addition, it can be extremely difficult to locate members of this population due to social stigmas particularly in places with strict social norms that are dictated by religious practices or within a geographically wide spread small group.2 Examples of such populations are; the homeless, prostitutes, drug addicts,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Chain referral a variant of snowballing is also often used interchangeably to represent snowballing in studies.5 This method relies on a series of participant referrals (multiple snowballing) to others who have experienced the intended characteristics by strategically accessing multiple networks to expand the reach of social network in other to obtain a representative estimate.6,7 Respondent driven sampling (RDS) Respondent driven sampling is much like snowballing method, that also relies on members who form interlinked social networks. Unlike a conventional probability sampling design, where each unit has a known and constant probability of selection, RDS is based on sampling design selection procedure that is affected by the discovered network in the population.8 11 RDS is predicated on the recognition that peers are better able to locate and recruit peers whom they know as members of a hard to reach social network. It can be implemented through the following 3 key steps: Planning Phase: The first step in this phase is familiarization of the extent of the networks in the population to be studied. Next step is identification of seeds chosen in a non random fashion, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. Analysis Of Katherine Mansfield s Miss Brill Essay 5.Analyse how the writer(s) use(s) language techniques for a particular purpose in a written text or texts you have studied. Katherine Mansfield uses an extensive range of language techniques to portray the lonely and slightly delusional spinster; Miss Brill. The story of Miss Brill is an extremely good example of how a writer can use different language techniques to reveal a variety of aspects of the character. The author uses characterisation through the language techniques to reveal a variety of truths to the reader about Miss Brill s personality. Mansfield uses the language techniques to express the theme of connectedness throughout the story. Mansfield also uses symbolism, setting and point of views by the different characters in her story to create a clear scene and atmosphere for the readers. Symbolism is very important throughout the short story as it illustrates a vivid understanding of who Miss Brill is, which is easily expressed through the relationship between Miss Brill and her fox fur. BODY PARAGRAPH #1 Miss Brill s fur is an extension of herself. The fox fur throughout the novel thoroughly symbolises Miss Brill and her life in a variety of ways. Miss Brill whom has lost all sense of connectedness throughout the story is able to strongly connect to the fox fur on a very ominous level. Mansfield makes it clear that Miss Brill lives her life through the fox fur; by links of characteristics between the fur and Miss Brill, which are fairly similar. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Essay On Long Term Care Long term care system America dates its generations from 1946 to 1964 which is a period after the Second World War. Children born in this era are known as baby boomers and constitute about 20% of the American population. In 2011, the youngest baby boomers turned 50 while the oldest have already retired. This is a massive retirement and has a lot of implications to the entire country. If projections are done to estimate the number of aged people in the American society by 2030 or 2050, it is undoubtedly that there will be millions of them. This change in the age structure will implicate the family structure, policy makers, businesses and mostly the healthcare system. An increased number of aged people in the population requires additional healthcare. The American government runs various entitlement programs that are meant to provide financial assistance, healthcare, legal assistance and nutrition to the elderly people. These programs include Medicare, Medicaid, social security benefits and supplemental security income. This will be done by through the determination of the rate law with respect to the orders of reaction for the reagents as well as the overall order of the reaction. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If the natural log of the absorbance creates a linear trend, then the solution has an order of reaction of one; meaning that doubling the solution of the dye, in turn, doubles the rate. If the inverse of the absorbance values (1/absorbance) creates a linear trend, then the order of reaction in respect to the dye is two. Meaning that doubling the concentration of the dye, quadruples the rate of the reaction. Which transformation renders the most accurate linear trend will be calculated by plotting the variables against time and finding the coefficient of determination (R2 value) for the line of best fit. This values states how much of the variance in the y variable, the natural log of the absorbance or the inverse of the absorbance, is accounted for by the least squares regression line based on the x variable time. To find the order of the reaction in respect to bleach, the volume of the bleach can be doubled and the rate of the reaction examined. This is because the concentration of bleach cannot be detected by the colorimeter; hence, experimental rate values are to be determined. The rate is calculated by taking the slope of the least squares regression line based on whichever y variable results in the closest linear ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I will note that Protestantism in the U.S. and in the black community is not homogenous. It is divided among three main steam traditions, evangelical Protestant churches, mainline Protestant churches and historically black Protestant churches. Other similarities that African Americans and Lebanese Americans share are their love for food and family. African Americans love to eat, as do Lebanese Americans and what better way to do this than at a family gathering. I have several Lebanese families that live on my block and at least monthly they have a family gathering that includes each family member arriving with food (usually potluck style). • 17. The Ethics Of Animal Testing By Robin Mckie The ethics of animal tests: inside the lab where marmosets are given Parkinson s by Robin McKie examines the situation of marmosets who are subjected to testing and experiments. McKie uses several literary techniques such as statistics, case studies and emotive language in his article to not only communicate the cruel and unjustifiable nature of animal testing, but also the necessity we humans have for it; while experimenting on animals can be considered immoral, it s still a much better alternative than using humans. Emotive language is used several times throughout the article. McKie describes the marmosets as being no bigger than cats. This automatically causes us to think of the marmosets in the same way that they think of cats; ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The reader assumes from what McKie wrote about animal testing that the researchers must be callous individuals who are indifferent to animal suffering, but in truth they have an innate love of animals. McKie provides evidence of this by describing how they end up knitting hammocks for the animals and having favourites. He mentions an interview with a King s College technician which supports his evidence. A different employee also claimed that researching on marmosets had allowed them to develop medicines which have allowed patients to run their lives normally. Prior to King s College s experiments on marmosets, Parkinson s patients were a mass of uncontrollable movement, jerking and waving their hands and arms. McKie convinces the reader of why, while animal testing can be seen as unethical and wrong, it still is very important in the medical field. I feel that the life of a human has greater value than that of an animal, and that in this case the means justifies the end. By sacrificing hundreds of animals for experiments we end up saving thousands of humans. Throughout his article, McKie uses a great variety of phrases and techniques to strikingly portray the reality of animal testing and the lesser known activities which happen behind the scenes. He powerfully communicates both the negative and positive features of using animals in experiments without definitively taking a side, thus he lets us form our own opinions on the morality of animal testing. Personally, I am a proponent of the use of animals in medical experiments solely because I am convinced that they are the most reliable and accurate was to gauge the effectiveness of ... • 18. Characteristics Of Veristic Surrealism Surrealism As the world began healing from World War I, modern artists decided to listen to their subconscious minds. Surrealism was a new style of art that formed from Dadaism. The leader of surrealism, AndrГ© Breton, believed that because surrealism required unique thoughts, it showed an active mind. Not only is surrealism found in art, it is also found in theater, literature, philosophy, and politics. The creation of surrealism is achieved by abstract or realistic images that may be bursting with voice or cold and impersonal. Bending the principles of design to give new feelings could create this feeling. After World War I, European artists explored their unconscious minds to create compositions that challenged common beliefs of artistic and emotional expression. Surrealism can be difficult to categorize due to the differences in styles and methods of creation. The two main surrealism techniques, automatism and veristic surrealism, are shown by various views of the conscious and unconscious. The focus of automatism is feelings. The emphasis of theses artists is less analytical. They think of their art as a way to connect the subconscious to the conscious. This usually results in a lack of form. Veristic surrealism is a way to link spiritual realities to the material world. They used objects as metaphors to show inner reality and to understand the real world. For the purpose of this paper, I have made the assumption that the people I am observing are a couple taking into account the preformed ideas of how couples do behave. I have also made an assumption that that they are in a love relationship and they are married. For people who are in a relationship they have to try and understand each other. They also have to conform their behaviors according to their partners so that they can understand each other more in the relationship. Conformity is not an easy concept especially when one is required to make major behavior changes in their lives. Therefore there are pre conformity behaviors that could be observed in the man before he fully demonstrated a conforming behavior. The pre conforming behavior was such as constantly forgetting what he was expected to do since this was a relatively new thing for him. There were instances where he totally forgot or did what was expected of him halfway without completion. There are several types of conformities which include; normative conformity. People are used to flipping a switch and turning on lights, or turning on the TV for entertainment, using the microwave, the refrigerator, and our heating system. These would not be possible with out electrical power. People may not think of coalwhen they enjoy all these conveniences, but coal is the primary source of power plants in United States and around the world. Electricity is part of our daily lives, which makes our lives easier since it has been discovered, but nobody thought about the dangerous consequences we will face, now and in the future. Realism is presenting a person, thing, or event in its true colors ( Realism ). Even throughout the Great Depression, Broadway and theaters managed to stay afloat. Its popularity began to surge, and there were 200 to 275 new shows coming out per year (Early 20th Century Theatre). Most of these shows were strictly for entertainment. Themes were often romantic, about happy endings and true love. However, some productions began to turn away from the stereotypes of shows during this time. In the 1920s and 30s, shows became more extravagant and helped influence some of the most iconic American productions (Theatre of the 20th Century and Beyond). As a result, shows like ... • 39. The Tragedy Of Queen Mary In a country already unstable, the news of Queen Mary s actions during her reign shook the rickety balance between chaos and peace. Thirty years after King Henry VIII broke away from the Catholic Church, installed a new religion into English culture, and citizens lived in a country where Catholicism was outlawed, the Marian Era began. The Marian Era lasted from 1553 1558, and will forever be remembered as a dark and dangerous time. If one was asked who they knew from the English monarchy during the 16th Century, many will answer Bloody Mary . Everyone knows about the dreaded Queen Bloody Mary, but hardly anyone really knows why. Sparking the question: Why was Queen Mary one of the most hated queens in English history? The lasting hate from Queen Mary s reign was due in part by her attempts to revive Catholicism in a Protestant England, killing a mass of English citizens, and her overall failures as a queen. Much to the protest of many of England s Protestant citizens, one of Mary s main goals as queen was to restore Catholicism as England s primary, and only, religion. Even though Kings Henry VIII and Edward both outlawed Catholicism in England, Mary still practiced in secret. Thirty years prior, when King Henry VIII renounced the Catholic Church, he created his own; therefore creating a brand new religion: Protestantism. As a result, Catholicism was made illegal and considered heretics if found attending Mass or accepting Communion (Royal Household 1). Mary s first ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. Picasso Female Complex Pablo Picasso: The Female Complex Many artists develop their works from their most compelling moments in life, whether they are filled with excruciating pain or unspeakable joy. Pablo Picasso creates work based on a multitude of influences in his life, from the suicide of his best friend to the rising of his career (Bio). However, a single theme reoccurs throughout his life that most would argue causes him to create some of the greatest paintings of his time: women. Critics shaped the different phases of his art into periods such as the Blue Period, Rose Period, CubismPeriod, Surrealist Period, and Self Portrait Period (Bio). His art was manipulated based on the dominant state of mind he was in during these stages of life, and many of the emotions had to do with the women he was involved with at the time. Though one might think that an artist who places such a passionate focus on women must deeply admire and respect them, Picasso does not fit into this standard. He actually felt a very strong sense of superiority to females, painting them as objects: cold, faceless, and purely created for sexual satisfaction (Withers 1). However, evidence strongly suggests that he probably feared them more than anything else. Every single one of his periods of art are heavily ruled by paintings of women, particularly nude, that tell a story about an experience he had; if he was so affected by women that he spent countless hours painting about it, there had to have been more going on ... The Stolen Generations History Assignment One of the great holocausts ever committed against a race of people on this planet was the Stolen Generations of children from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander decent. The Bringing Them Home Report, also known as the National Inquiry into the into the Separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children from Their Families however was an extremely pivotal event in the fight for civil rights for Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders as it initiated recognition, reconciliation and equality. The significance of the Bringing Them Home report is explained through the trauma caused by the Stolen Generations and the background information regarding the report. The brutal practises of past government went unrecognised until the Bringing Them Home report. The Stolen Generations was the forcible removal of approximately 14,700 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children per year from 1880s to 1970s by the Australia Federal government and church missions to eradicate the Aboriginal problem . In removing the Indigenous children, white people stole Aboriginal people s future. Language, tradition, knowledge, dances and spirituality could only live on if passed on to their children (Source6). Occasional erratic actions in Nick s behavior show that he is constantly attempting to suppress a deep internal turmoil. • 53. Determinism And Its Effects On Life Paths In this world our race, location, family, and social class are already predetermined. We do not get to choose the position we are born into. Since we live in a world where most of our choices are made for us, some of us are luckier than others. Some people are born to better circumstances in life paths because of luckier predestined factors and qualities afforded to them. Because of the status in which we are born into, the journey we set ourselves on in life is a preconceived path that can be very cumbersome to deviate from. The path may be hard to digress from, but it is still possible for humans to determine their own outcomes and life paths, because we have free willand free will allows us to do this. Determinismis the belief that our lives are already decided and set in motion, and that we can change our actions but are unable to change our destiny that is already set forth. However, free will is the ability to make our own decisions and set our own paths in life. Similar to the belief that we decide how we end up and what we do in life, some Christians believe God gives us free will but he also has our ending fate already set in stone. This perspective definitely conveys contradictions, because it states that we as people have control over something that is already out of our control. Future research might consist of more in depth information about how these bad boys got to where they are now (detention centers, juvenile hall, foster care, etc.), perhaps looking at what the boys might have found helpful to their positive rehabilitation. Probably the most effective place to start further research would be with the programs that help these young men improve themselves, whether that means getting them back in school if they have dropped out, helping them with legal issues, or helping them with addiction, etc. If we could research these and maybe follow an individual from start (admission to detention center) to finish (through these services and hopefully back into society) we might be able to better see where our services are falling short for these young men. Again, this is something that will always be an issue but what we can do to fix it is try to become better at our approaches to these problems when they first arise.
