Semi-detailed Lesson Plan 
in English IV 
I. Objectives 
At the end of 1 hour in-depth discussion, the students should be able to: 
 define what an idiom is; and 
 construct sentences with idiomatic expressions. 
II. Subject Matter 
Topic: Using Idioms in Expressing One’s Feelings 
Materials: Visual aids 
Reference: English Expressways textbook for Fourth Year,pp.150-157;pp.54(teacher’s 
manual); http://www.smart-words.org/quotes-sayings/idioms-meaning.html 
III. Procedure 
A. Preliminary Activities 
1. Prayer 
2. Greetings 
3. Checking of Attendance 
4. Review 
B. Motivation 
The students will be asked to read the following examples of idiomatic 
expressions to be posted by the teacher on the board. 
 go places - to have a good future 
 second to none - better than anything else 
 get the inside track - to get the advantage 
 live by one’s wits - survive by being clever 
 screw up one’s courage - build up one’s courage
C. Lesson Proper 
1. Recall what the students know about idioms or idiomatic expressions. 
2. Have them understand the meaning of idioms. 
3. In every example of idioms given earlier, ask a student to create a sentence 
using the given idiom. 
D. Generalization 
1. What is idiom? 
E. Application 
The class will be grouped into three. Each group has to answer the questions to be 
shown by the teacher.A representative per group is needed. The fastest group that 
can answer the question will earn the point. 
IV. Evaluation 
On a 1l2 crosswise, determine the meaning of the underlined idiomatic expression in each 
sentence. Encircle the letter of the correct answer. 
1. My date for the dance was a cold fish. 
a. Cool 
b. Dull and boring 
c. A graceful dancer 
d. Absent 
2. My father is a smoke eater.He is always present in every incident of fire 
in our municipality

5. She said “yes”to his proposal of marriage simply because he has deep 
pockets.

b. Is wealth

d. Is understanding 
V. Assignment 
In not less than 5 sentences and not more than 10 sentences, produce a composition 
describing your most unforgettable experience in life or the most unforgettable place you 
had visited. Don’t forget to include sensory details.

  • 1. Eastern Cabu National High School Semi-detailed Lesson Plan in English IV I. Objectives At the end of 1 hour in-depth discussion, the students should be able to:  define what an idiom is; and  construct sentences with idiomatic expressions. II. Subject Matter Topic: Using Idioms in Expressing One’s Feelings Materials: Visual aids Reference: English Expressways textbook for Fourth Year,pp.150-157;pp.54(teacher’s manual); http://www.smart-words.org/quotes-sayings/idioms-meaning.html III. Procedure A. Preliminary Activities 1. Prayer 2. Greetings 3. Checking of Attendance 4. Review B. Motivation The students will be asked to read the following examples of idiomatic expressions to be posted by the teacher on the board.  go places - to have a good future  second to none - better than anything else  get the inside track - to get the advantage  live by one’s wits - survive by being clever  screw up one’s courage - build up one’s courage
  • 2. C. Lesson Proper 1. Recall what the students know about idioms or idiomatic expressions. 2. Have them understand the meaning of idioms. 3. In every example of idioms given earlier, ask a student to create a sentence using the given idiom. D. Generalization 1. What is idiom? E. Application The class will be grouped into three. Each group has to answer the questions to be shown by the teacher.A representative per group is needed. The fastest group that can answer the question will earn the point. IV. Evaluation On a 1l2 crosswise, determine the meaning of the underlined idiomatic expression in each sentence. Encircle the letter of the correct answer. 1. My date for the dance was a cold fish. a. Cool b. Dull and boring c. A graceful dancer d. Absent 2. My father is a smoke eater.He is always present in every incident of fire in our municipality a. Smoker b. Driver of jeepney c.
