Food Processing And Its Effects On Population Health
The term food processing is often improperly defined. Although a lack of food processing regulations
today may pose health concerns for the modern consumer due to its association with chemical
additives and unnatural transformations, food processing in its most basic form can be defined quite
simply as any procedure undergone by food commodities after they have left the primary producer,
and before they reach the consumer (Welch, 2000). Therefore, food processing in and of itself is an
extremely broad industry ranging in functions that, over the course of history, has had both beneficial
and harmful effects on population health.
Food processing has a long history dating all the way back to the earliest civilizations of humanity.
From the ancient Mesopotamians, Egyptians, and Romans to the Aztecs and Incas, early civilizations
from around the world recorded knowledge of how to preserve food with the limited materials
available. Innovators they most certainly were, the ancient civilizations managed to preserve foods by
adding salt, sun drying foods, and roasting over fire. While this may not be what initially comes to
mind when we think of food processing in a modern context today, ancient civilizations did in fact
alter the natural structure of foods thus initiating the food processing industry with techniques that,
unknowingly at the time, utilized quite a lot of science. Although these contributions to the history of
food processing were a significant

Memento is a mystery, thriller starring Guy Pearce, Carrie Anne Moss, Joe Pantoliano. The 2000 film

PLOT SUMMARY
In Memento, Leonard Shelby has short memory loss resulting from an injury in a confrontation with
his wife s murderer. He is able to remember everything before the injury but cannot form new ones.
Leonard learns to cope with his injury by repetition, leaving notes on his body, the Sammy Jenkins, a
person with the same injury that his company investigated prior to the accident. Leonard ever since the
accident, his sole purpose has been to get revenge on his wife s murderer. Leonard has a handful of
facts about the murderer, the biggest one being that the murders name is John G. Along the way,
Leonard gets help from two people, Teddy and Natalie, but each time he meets them, he doesn t
remember who they are, why they are helping him or even if they are helping him or leading him
down the wrong path. The film starts with Leonard killing John G. and throughout the movie we see
how Leonard gathers the close to find and kill John G.
DISCUSSION OF PLOT
I would classify Memento as primarily a mystery film. Throughout the

Methodological Individualism
In the social sciences, an endless debate is ongoing involving fundamental issues pertaining between
methodological individualism and methodological holism. The reason this is such a deep rooted
heated debate amongst researchers is the fact that it touches upon our most deeply seated beliefs about
the nature of the individual and of society, our knowledge about these, and the idea of a good society
(Udehn, 2002). According to Parsons (1937) methodological individualism is a claim in social
phenomena which must be explained by showing how these results from individual actions, which in
turn must be explained through reference to the intentional states that motivate the individual actors.
Simply put, it is the claim that explanations of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Following economist Mark Blaug (1992), he believed that the effect to rule out the macro propositions
that could not be reduced to the micro would mean that all research using the implication of the macro
would have devastating effects for society, thus there must be something wrong with this
methodological principle. What is then majorly argued by theorist against methodological
individualism is the fact that working on theories based on an infinite amount of possibilities could
come up with an infinite amount of conclusions, thus never coming to the route of the issue at hand.
Secondly, much research conducted on the macro , which has not been able to be explained in terms of
micro , has been used by researchers with great success for society as a whole, however if the
methodological individualism model is correct, all of that research would be rejected, and since no one
is willing to throw out good research, there is a problem with methodological individualism. Although
methodological individualism is based on an infinite amount of possibilities, Mises (1998) writes,
society is not a sui generis entity; there is I and you and Bill and Joe and all the rest. From a
methodological individualism viewpoint, collective nouns describing social phenomena do not refer to
independent substances. The idea the methodological individualism develops a reductionist
explanation of social phenomena to

Away With Murder
How to Get Away with Murder has a multitude of elements that come into play throughout the series.
The series follows a group of law students being mentored by Annalise Keating, a prominent defense
attorney. The group deal with multiple deaths, usually caused by them, by using anything ranging
from their knowledge of the law to hired hitmen to get their way. The repeated theme in the series
exposes the harsh reality of how the local government and the people within are corrupt. A
conscienceless society is a major concept that shapes each character s narcissistic frame of mind
where they will do anything to achieve their own personal goals. Even with all the murders and deceit,
in the end each character seems to accomplish part of their mission. ... Show more content on

This episode really highlights the element s of how corrupt other can be due to how easily the hospital
staff was bribed to forge false medical documents. This just goes to show corruption can transcend the
real of law and move into other aspects, such as medicine. The students show how much they have
become desensitized by being unsympathetic toward the shooting they were involved in. They even go
as far as plotting to kill the victim after finding out he is still alive. The students only show concern for
themselves and the people within their group. Oliver Hampton is the only character to openly express
sympathy for the victims. He seems to be a personified version of the other characters conscience.
Early in the series he is not as prevalent because the students have not been introduced to their life of
lies, but as the series goes on and the students begin to lose emotion toward their actions, he comes
more of a constant figure to add more empathy. Oliver s constant reminder of how the group s actions
have affected others is what keeps them from basically becoming

Definition Essay On Plus Size Women
Curves ... More than the average. An authentic person. A generous silhouette. Round and magnificent
... Voluptuous ... There are so many ways to describe a plus size woman! What is the meaning of plus
size and what does it mean? The subject provoked controversy. What women are in this category?
What is a plus size silhouette?
We are often told via our social media platforms that our models are not really size anymore . Whether
it s pictures of our advertising campaigns, portraits of our fashion bloggers or photos of our fans, the
silhouette and size of the women we publish are criticized.
The plus size category refers to a range of silhouettes and sizes. Some women have small stature,
others are taller, some have broad hips, others have narrower hips, some have a strong chest, others
have a smaller chest ... but whatever their characteristics, Women all have one thing in common.
And what do they have in common? Simply ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Otherwise, they could not wear our clothes!
We are keen to show that the term plus sizes is not a vague term for randomly speaking all silhouettes;
It has a definite meaning. It refers to a range of silhouettes and sizes. So here is the list of our models
and bloggers with their stature and size.
The views vary with respect to the plus sizes and there will inevitably be someone to oppose our
interpretation of the term. On the other hand, before commenting that this or that woman is not really
much more , ask yourself if you are not judging the body of another woman. What gives you the right
to judge whether or not a woman is plus size ?
Be receptive to the magnificent diversity of women plus sizes, and encourage each other by offering
us support, affirming and accepting us, rather than criticizing us with disapproval. In clarifying our
position, we hope to have shed light on the issue and above all a more positive light in the debate on

Kingsolver s The Bean Trees
Barbara Kingsolver once said, Good fiction creates empathy. A novel takes you somewhere and asks
you to look through the eyes of another person, to live another life (Barbara Kingsolver Quotes).
Contemporary Literary Criticism includes authors critiques of Kingsolver s novel, The Bean Trees,
agreeing this quote ...imbues the reader with giddy feelings ( Barbara Kingsolver ). Published in 1988,
Kingsolver takes the reader on an emotional roller coaster with a manifold of feelings. Her novel,
filled with friendship and survival, is set in the barren American Southwest, focusing on Taylor Greer
s search for a new life as she traveled across the country ( Barbara Kingsolver ). Kingsolver s

Geographical facts and information present in the novel came from Kingsolver s knowledge of the
area. Hughes Walker was no Kentucky boy (Kingsolver 4). This quote acknowledged Kingsolver s
ability to distinguish the types of people who did and did not live in the area. The adventurous
childhood Kingsolver had and the area she grew up in helped influence her to write The Bean Trees.
Her longing for adventure carried over to Taylor and her personality. Kingsolver described some of the
perils Taylor would take. When I was just the littlest kid I would go pond fishing on a Sunday and
bring home the boniest mess of blue gills and maybe a bass the size of your thumb... (Kingsolver 3).
One big adventure Taylor went on was her decision to drive until she found a comfortable place that
she would call her forever home. Along with these two prominent factors of her childhood, Kingsolver
and her family also moved across the world to Africa, where she learned about another culture. At
seven years of age, Wendell announced the family would relocate to Africa so he could be more
efficacious in his practice of medicine ( The Bean Trees: Barbara Kingsolver ). While living in Africa,
Kingsolver experienced the feeling of being an outsider which led her to a more secluded life as she
believed she did not fit in. A new interest other than nature erupted in Kingsolver and she became
intrigued with people from other cultures. Everyday she wrote in a journal and later

How Marketers And Marketers Influence The Creation Of The...
In a world of consumerism, children represent a giant portion of an important demographic to
marketers because of their purchasing power. They greatly influence their parents buying decisions
and are the consumers of the future. Since children have this advantage, advertisers know that they
should be a main target. Advertising was created to influence the creation of the consumer. This
method became a revolutionary development. The advertisers goal was to cater to the consumers
wants and desires. Although the advertisers used what they knew from the consumer to shape their
wants to create in commodities. Marketers and advertisers use several tactics such as promotion,
positioning, brand voice, demographic segmentation, narrowcasting, ... Show more content on

Marketers use the immense emotional attachment children have to their advantage. Marketers are well
aware of the children s favorites, they use that knowledge to keep generating money by catering the
products to the children s interests. This tactic becomes very dishonest. It is marketing products by
using social aspect that can affect one s behavior rather than highlighting the products actual features.
It encourages buyers to purchase products for their personal gain, instead of the actual use of the
product. For example, when a child watches Barney and Friends it does not insinuate that this child is
more intelligent than a child who does not watch it. Although, since children start watching these
kinds of shows at such a young age, it can damage their attention span causing it to not be as attentive
as one who does not partake in watching shows that are solely for entertainment. Going on, a major
issue between advertised brand names and unadvertised brand names starts to create a structural issue
that does not just stay within children it even extends to the older buyers. It is perceived that
advertised brand names are more effective than generic brands. To be effective in the United States as
a consumer, a child should be able to differentiate the real benefits of a product, rather than just
focusing on the aesthetic of a

of plastic and paper bags. C. Plastic bags are very convenient for shoppers and store owners, but they
are hard to recycle and have damaging impacts on animal, human and environmental health,
sometimes even fatal. D. Plastic bags come with a high cost in manufacturing for users and the
environment, they have bag consequences in our nature and also they are very expensive for
consumers to buy and recycle. II. Body A. Plastic bags are very expensive to create. 1. The

The Concentration Of Behavior Analysis
Unit 9 Assignment
Shalee Martin
Kaplan University
PS499
Introduction For the Unit 9 Assignment I will be creating a fictitious case (client) within the
concentration of Behavior Analysis. I will include client demographics, reasons for seeking out
service, intervention or treatment goals for the client, a theory that can relate to the client s case,
methods of interventions, any cultural issues, and any use of contemporary technology that will be
used. I decided to revolve my case study around social anxiety (or a social phobia). It will focus on
how a person s thoughts and beliefs can intensify an anxiety/phobia. If a person truly believes that
he/she will not do well in a certain situation, those thoughts and feelings can turn that into a reality. It
is up to the professionals to change these beliefs and negative emotions.
Case Study
Samantha is a middle aged woman, 35 years old. She married her high school sweetheart, Jackson, in
their Freshmen year of college. Other than her husband, her family consists of three children, two boys
and one girl.
Samantha works at a quaint little flower shop that is owned and operated by one of her family friends
whom she has been close to since they were in elementary school. The shop isn t overly busy and her
position never caused her to be amidst the customers, as she worked in the back making the
arrangements. Recently, however, her friend and owner has had to pardon herself due to maternity

Sociological Theories Of Prejudice And Racism
Sociological Theories of Prejudice and Racism
Functionalist theory argues for race and ethnic relations to be functional and thus supply to the
melodic conduct and strength of society, racial and ethnic minorities must assimilate into that society.
Assimilation is a process by which a minority becomes socially, economically, and culturally absorbed
within the dominant society. The assimilation perspective assumes that to become fully fledged
members of society, alternative groups must adopt as much of the dominant society s culture as
possible, particularly its language, mannerisms, and goals for success, and thus give up much of its
own culture. Assimilations stands in contrast to racial cultural pluralism the maintenance and ... Show

Each step enables the next, as people learn by doing. In most cases, people do not get to the later steps
without receiving support for their behavior in the earlier ones. Verbal antagonism includes casual
racial slurs and disparaging racial comments, either in or out of the target s presence. By themselves
such comments may not be regarded as serious enough to be unlawful (balanced against concerns
about freedom of speech), but they constitute a clear form of hostility.
Subtle, Unconscious, Automatic Discrimination
Even as a national consensus has developed that explicit racial hostility is abhorrent, people may still
hold prejudicial attitudes, stemming in part from past U.S. history of overt prejudice. Although
prejudicial attitudes do not necessarily result in discriminatory behaviour with adverse effects, the
persistence of such attitudes can result in unconscious and subtle forms of racial discrimination in
place of more explicit, direct hostility. Such subtle prejudice is often abetted by differential media
portrayals of nonwhites versus whites, as well as de facto segregation in

Analysis Of Michael Moore s Sicko
Michael Moore has been known to create films in which in my opinion has shown how liberal minded
and bias he can really be, a truly unsatisfying quality, when you think of the issues that are covered in
his films and the power he has to carry out real change. However, in this film Sicko he has really
grown from the Michael Moore we all have grown to dislike, the film is very insightful, generating
quality thoughts and questioning, why do we not fight more to advocate for a better health care
system? Mr. Moore gave some exceptional facts with exception towards the end of the film, when he
uses sarcasm and clearly political propaganda to show war enemies receiving the best of care, while
hard working Americans receive subpart care. I guess the old saying rings true that you can t teach an
old dog new tricks.
This film focuses on one of our nation s biggest issue, The Health Care System. At every presidential
election debate, the topic is brought up to gage on how each candidate will, during their presidency,
rectify or even improve the current system that is already failing thousands of Americans. Mr. Moore
has tried to exposed the industry for what it truly is, a profitable billion dollar business, with well paid
CEO s and Doctors that get paid more based on how many surgeries the perform for ill patients and
not by how well they ve treated patients with preventive care to avoid diseases.
This film seemed more pathos, even with the addition of some facts and figures on

Sallie House In The Exorcist And The Amityville Horror
Due to the level of unexplained defiances, the majority of the neighbors on 2nd Street in Atchison,

The Importance Of Technology Literacy In Students Learning
Technology literacy plays a significant role in students learning. It is therefore crucial for educators to
incorporate learning lessons and techniques that will help students build and strengthen their
technology skills (McLaughlin, 2015). The literacy web tool that I am interested in exploring more
extensively is Diigo. Diigo is an annotation tool that encourages students to collect resources, gather
web pages, and add sticky notes and comments on their web page provided from the site (Diigo,
2017). Essential this site serves as a personal library where students can make notes and post
interesting and helpful sources all in one place (Diigo, 2017). Students will also have the opportunity
to share their web pages with classmates. What makes this site exciting is that students can upload a
PDF file right onto their web page and make notes directly on the document. Therefore, students can
opt to read science articles, take notes, highlight important information and complete assignments
right on their computer.
In today s education, students are expected to read and understand complex texts, read higher level
informational texts, expand their academic vocabulary and communicate their reading and learning
abilities through writing, to meet the Common Core Standards (Buehl, 2014). By using this annotation
web tools, students can build and develop essential literacy skills that will help them build
sophisticated vocabulary, comprehend complex text, and understand important

Essay on the Rental Heart
Most people have tried it before, and those that haven t are either too young to have tried it, or simply
just heartless. It s terrible and beautiful all at the same time, which is probably why it s such a great
topic for stories. However, getting your heart broken at some point in your life is inevitable. For some,
it happens more than once. This is the case for our main character in the short story The Rental Heart ,
by Kirsty Logan.
To begin with, the reader has no clue as to whether the main character is a boy or a girl. In my head
though, I got the image of a girl. The story is about this girl, who gets her heart broken over and over
again, by boys as well as girls (she is bisexual). It s not really a problem for her, because she ... Show

Maybe it s simply a whole different world! She also uses many symbols, especially to express how
love feels to the main character. The heart was dusty and tarnished and utterly empty . This shows the
reader just how heart broken she was. Her heart hasn t felt real love in a long time, so it is dusty. It has
been abused many times, so it is tarnished. And because of all this, it leaves her with nothing more
than an empty space. Maybe the island that she says she went to for a year isn t really an island that
she actually went to either. Maybe she just closed herself down mentally, unable to deal with the world
with a broken heart. That could have felt to other people, as if she was actually away on an island.
What seems to be pulling this story towards science fiction the most however, seems to be the fact that
even though it s all clearly one big metaphor for getting your heart broken and mending it again, it s
nowhere close to how reality is. Heartbreaks come in all shapes and sizes. But in real life you can t
just go well, tough luck, she wasn t the one for me, so I m not going to be sad about it . Healing a
broken heart takes time in the real, non fictional world. Just changing it like it s nothing, that s the real
science fiction in the story.
All in all, we should be glad that we don t have these kinds of rental services available. It would be
way too boring. What makes life exciting is that it s fragile; you never know

Imagination And Reality In Ode To A Nightingale
Hi my name is Dheer Bhatia, today I will talk to you about how Keats explores both imagination and
reality in the poem Ode to a Nightingale. This poem is about how Keats escapes reality and goes to an
imaginative world with a nightingale where he hears her songs and lullabies before inevitably
returning to the real world. It s an expression of love, hence the word ode, to the nightingale and her
songs. The creative piece I have chosen is an illusion painting that is painted by Robert Gonsalves,
and it illustrates the separation between imagination and reality, and its difficulty in its distinction.
Keats uses juxta positioning, imagery, structure and rhetorical questions to explore the two concepts of
imagination and reality.
Discrepancy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the art piece, there is a bed of water underneath the ships and the boat. The fluidity and movement
of the waves are symbolic of the transition between imagination and reality. Keats desire to escape is
shown through the rough brush strokes of the blue waves in the foreground. This suggests the
transition to be difficult and problematic. The colour of the sea, blue, has connotations of serenity and
peace suggesting the fate of Keats once the transition is complete. Keats longs to escape reality as he
describes reality as where men sit and hear each other groan . This depicts reality to be tedious and
dreary, which results in him loathing this concept. The word groan is an expression that conveys dread
and despair, therefore Keats feels this way towards reality due to its monotonous and depressing
characteristics. The action of groaning portrays an unappealing view of the world that Keats is longing
to escape when conversing with the nightingale. Furthermore, the elongation of the word groan
suggests the tedious and tiring effort to stay within the normal world and emphasises Keats desire to
escape from and seek asylum in the nightingale s world. Keats expresses this through his actions when
he goes Away! Away! , this makes the reader question the society and world they live in, as Keats sole
desire is to escape the very world they stay in now. In

have. For instance, Hannah Montana is a TV show mostly viewed by kids and teenager. She was at a

form of depression. The patient loss interest, loss appetite or have eating disorders, feels sad or
worthless. This kind of depression can last for more than 6 months, sometimes up to years and if not

Final Draft of paper 1 In the essay Our Time by John Edgar Wideman he often takes a break from the

these problems and hopefully solve these problems. He believes that if these problems are not rectified
he would destroy any chance he has at telling a truthful account of his brother s story. To rectify these
problems he employs a variety of unique techniques in his writing. Looking at these techniques it is

The first of the three is Garth s death. When Garth died he lost his best friend, one of the few people
that he truly loved. After Garth died Robby got big into drugs, I think its cause he was depressed after
the loss and wanted to forget. It was a major turning point in Robby s life and in my opinion the most
important of the three events that could have started the story. The second one is his own birth. People
may wonder why this wouldn t be the logical starting point seeing as how it s his birth and makes
sense chronologically. The reason this can be seen as starting point of his troubles isn t because he was
born so it could happen as you d probably think. It s because for as long as he could remember his
birthday was overshadowed. It was right after Christmas so it always felt a little insignificant
compared to the biggest holiday of the year. There were also the unfortunate events of death that
seemed to follow his birthday around like a cloud. All of his Grandparents died near his birthday and
that has to take a toll on you. To have your birthday associated with the deaths of loved ones must be
extremely hard. The third and final possible starting point is his childhood home in Shadyside.

he talks about how he grew up in a predominantly white neighborhood. He was around white people

The Importance Of My Day At School
School started and I sat in the front with a group of people I didn t know. I looked around, seeing a lot
of students already talking to their friends. None of my friends were there. I looked down as the
teacher introduced herself. The class started and I just sat there exploring the room. I added all of my
things into my desk. Once the bell rang, I went to my next class. We had to stay together as a class in
the hallways, single file line as the teacher would say. The day went on the same way until lunchtime.
The first thing I did was walk around and find the other classrooms. I spotted my friends and ran
towards them. I gave them a big hug and I started talking to them. Once they called my classroom to
get up for lunch I had to leave them. I went up and got lunch and then sat by myself. Two other people
needed seats, so they moved to my side and sat with me. I kept quiet until it was time for recess. I
went out with my friends and we chased eachother around. Soon we had to go back to our classrooms
and finish our day. We said our goodbyes and finished the school day.
My father picked me up and asked, How was your day at school? . I told him it was good, as I was
able to see my friends. He then told me I should make new friends, and that I should be confident like
I used to be. Always being a new kid at a school has its downfalls. Not everybody was like me, and
not everybody I talked to liked me either. My friends were the toys that I ve unwrapped so eagerly on

Charlotte Perkins Gilman Subverts The Idea Of True Woman
In the 19th century the idea of True Woman came busting out onto the scene. True Woman was the
idea of a perfect woman. A True Woman was obedient, quiet in her opinions, selfless, and a good
homemaker. The Cult of Domesticity ; as it is called today, made women feel inferior to their male
counterparts because women were not the breadwinners of the family. In The Yellow Wallpaper and
Other Stories, Charlotte Perkins Gilman subverts the ideas and values of True Woman .
Gilman s short story Three Thanksgivings subverts the idea of True Woman with the character Mrs.
Morrison. Mrs. Morrison is the widow of a wealthy man and lives in Welcome House with her
servant, Sally. Mrs. Morrison brings in income to pay the mortgage by allowing ... Show more content

her life, Don t say a thing, dearie I understand... We are going to make a change! (53). The two women
start doing what they have always wanted to do, the mother in law has a daycare for babies and Mrs.
Gordins gives music lessons. By making their own happiness Gilman shows the reader figuratively
that woman do not need men to make their own happiness.

Dr. Joan. Dr. Joan is the sister in law to Mr. Peebles and she recommends to him a vacation away from

The Cost Of Social Norms
To summarize the articles; What isn t for sale? by Michael J. Sandel, and The Cost of Social Norms by
Dan Ariely, in the articles both authors discuss the relationship between markets and society, and how
they are intertwined even though they shouldn t which is partially caused by market values entering
society and affecting the regular norms of society causing money to be the first thing on everybody s
mind. The article What isn t for sale? By Michael J. Sandel talks about how society is broken because
markets have reached into places they don t necessarily belong and influencing people s values by
supplanting nonmarket norms with market values. They do so by placing prices on things that
normally aren t considered to be goods or services and couldn t even be marketed, some examples
given in the article are how people can pay an annual fee ranging from $1,500 to $25,000, to gain
access to their doctors personal cell phone, and same day appointments; another example is how
people in Santa Anna, California, and other cities can actually pay $90 per night in ... Show more

one which is warm and fuzzy, where people do each other favors for the good of it, with no need to

satisfaction. In the world governed by market norms all exchanges are sharp, where all transactions
are for the sake of buying something with the only benefit being to gain something monetary, but in
today s society these worlds have collided and people are having a hard time identifying what should
be governed by market norms and what should be governed by social

Sonnet 95 Summary
In sonnet 95, the speaker depicts a paternal feeling while speaking to the addressee, where indeed the
poet reminds his audience about way appearance can be so deceiving. The young man is relying on his
good appearance to veil his sexual immorality. Being that he is handsome and attractive, people are
reluctant to disapprove his behavior. In the first quadrant, the poet employs different stylistic devices,
which include simile, as the young man is likened to a fragrant rose, and on the other hand, he is
compared to a destructive worm, but all his dark side of life is hidden under his good looking and
charming nature. What is important about this poem is the manner in which the speaker reminds the
young man about his bad behavior and draws examples that makes him feel sorry about what he does
behind his good looking nature. By the use of diction, imagery, diction, images, metaphors and other
figures of speech, such as tone of voice, allusions, syntax and structure of the speech, the speaker
warns the young man against his sexual immorality, and reminds him that there are detrimental risks
associated with his behavior if he does not change.
In the first quadrant, the speaker examines both sides of the young man s life where he looks at the
darker and better sides but most importantly demonstrating the way he misuses his good looking
ability to commit sexual crimes. However, the speaker does not condemn it openly but appreciates his
good look how sweet and lovely (1), but

The True Cause to the Spanish-American War
The Spanish American War served to epitomize the imperialist sentiments inherent to American
society of the late 19th century, as it was driven nearly entirely by jingoism and a large degree of
sensationalism. When examining this war, many often conclude that it was the result of the pressure
placed on McKinley by multiple expansionists within Washington that such men as Theodore
Roosevelt and Henry Cabot Lodge were, perhaps, the primary cause for this imperialist endeavour.
However, upon deeper inspection it appears to be that such men can not be noted as the sole, or even
most responsible, factors in initiating the conflict. For it seems that the evidence is more supportive
towards the notion that the general attitudes of the public were mostly to blame, and therefore, the
cause of the war must lay with the sensationalistic yellow journalism which had grown rampant in that
period as the underlying cause of the Spanish American War. Basically, as shall soon be demonstrated,
it appears to be illogical for one to deduce that the pressure expressed onto President McKinley by his
imperialist counterparts should be held accountable for the Spanish American War. To start, it may be
entirely erroneous for one to claim that Roosevelt may have had any significant effect upon McKinley
s decision to declare war on Spain. Roosevelt was the Assistant Secretary of the Navy, and thus, the
only action one could possibly cite as any attempt to pressure McKinley into considering

Essay On Unified Modeling Language
The Unified Modeling language (UML) was released by the Object Management Group (OMG) in the
effort to provide a standardized design language to build and develop computer applications. The
purpose of the design language is to allow IT professionals to distribute system structure and design

important part of software projects, large and small. With modeling, the software development team

failure. Modeling provides a greater opportunity for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The use case diagram s purpose is to help development teams visualize the functional requirements of
a system, including the relationship of actors (human beings who will interact with the system) to
essential processes, as well as the relationships among different use cases. The class diagram shows
how the different entities (people, things, and data) relate to each other. The Sequence diagrams is
almost self explanatory, it shows a detailed flow for a specific use case or even just part of a specific
use case. The statechart diagram models the different states that a class can be in and how that class
transitions from state to state. Activity diagrams show the procedural flow of control between two or
more class objects while processing an activity. A component diagram provides a physical view of the
system. Its purpose is to show the dependencies that the software has on the other software
components (e.g., software libraries) in the system. The deployment diagram shows how a system will
be physically deployed in the hardware environment. Its purpose is to show where the different
components of the system will physically run and how they will communicate with each other. Two
main criticisms of UML is whether diagrams are needed at all, and during what stage of the software
development process they should be used, also, the frequency of any updates of the diagrams. The
other is that the UML diagrams just lack the detail

Answer: Design quality means the product attributes that enhance the utility of the product for the
customers. It is that making products for consumers to use the products better with more conveniences
and values.
Question 2: What are the causes and consequences of BMW s quality problems with newly launched
products? What should be done to improve launch quality?
Answer: I think there are several reasons in BMW s new model development way like below; 1.
BMW doesn t use pre production tools during prototyping. gt; BMW has less opportunity to uncover
and solve many kinds ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It would save the time for solving problems with tool design, the part, or the process before the actual
production starts and would save the money at last. 2. Let the vendors supply the prototype parts.
They are the specialist for the products. They have more experience and skills in their filed. Using
them in development process let them fix our problems in advance. After completing the final design
approval, let them supply the parts for commercial production, too. It will make the relationships
between BMW and vendors more cooperative and friendly. 3. Shorten the period from pilot
production to commercial production. Apply pre production tools in pilot production as early as
possible and get rid of and shorten the period of factory pilot production if possible.
Regarding future development projects, same changes should be applied, I think.
Question 4: What changes would you recommend in the way BMW develops new models? What
attributes of newly launched products would you expect to improve as a result of these
recommendations? Which attributes might deteriorate?
Answer: I recommend like; 1. Design for production. In BMW, designing is the first thing in
development. However I think, design people don t consider efficient production engineering. If they
make production engineering into design consideration, the development process will be more
efficient and quality problems and period will decrease. However the creativity can be injured. 2.

Informative Speech On Gestational Diabetes Mellitus
Gestational diabetes (also called gestational diabetes mellitus or GDM) is a kind of diabetes that can
happen during pregnancy.
Seven out of every 100 pregnant women (7 percent) develop gestational diabetes. It s a condition in
which your body has too much sugar (called glucose) in the blood.
Here are the top things you need to know about gestational diabetes:
Most pregnant women get a test for gestational diabetes at 24 to 28 weeks of pregnancy.
If untreated, gestational diabetes can cause problems for your baby, like premature birth and stillbirth.
Gestational diabetes usually goes away after you have your baby; but if you have it, you re more likely
to develop diabetes later in life.

Weighing this much makes your baby more likely to get hurt during labor and birth. You may need to
have a cesarean birth (also called c section) to keep your baby safe. A c section is surgery in which
your baby is born through a cut that your doctor makes in your belly and uterus (womb). Large babies
are more likely to be obese or have diabetes later in life.
Stillbirth. This is when a baby dies in the womb after 20 weeks of pregnancy.
Gestational diabetes also can cause health complications for your baby after birth, including breathing
problems, low blood sugar and jaundice. Jaundice is a medical condition in which a baby s eyes and
skin look yellow. A baby has jaundice when his liver isn t fully developed or isn t working well.
Are you at risk for gestational diabetes?
You may be more likely than other women to develop gestational diabetes if:
You re older than 25.
You re overweight or you gained a lot of weight during pregnancy.
You have a family history of diabetes. This means that one or more of your family members has
diabetes.
You re African American, Native American, Asian, Hispanic or Pacific Islander. These women are
more likely to have gestational diabetes than others.

Action-Based Discretization for AI Search
Action Based Discretization for AI Search
Dr. Todd W. Neller*
Department of Computer Science Gettysburg College Campus Box 402 Gettysburg, PA 17325 1486
Introduction As computer gaming reaches ever greater heights in realism, we can expect the
complexity of simulated dynamics to reach further as well. To populate such gaming environments
with agents that behave intelligently, there must be some means of reasoning about the consequences
of agent actions. Such ability to seek out the ramifications of various possible action sequences,
commonly called lookahead , is found in programs that play chess, but there are special challenges
that face game programmers who wish to apply AI search techniques to complex continuous
dynamical systems. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Finally, we compare three different means of action parameter discretization, including a dispersion
technique that generates an approximate uniform sampling of closed action spaces. Action Based
Discretization Artificial Intelligence search algorithms search discrete systems, yet we live and reason
in a continuous world. Continuous systems must first be discretized, i.e. approximated as discrete
systems, to apply such algorithms. There are two common ways that continuous search problems are
discretized: state based discretization and action based discretization. Statebased discretization
becomes infeasible when the state space is highly dimensional. Actionbased discretization becomes
infeasible when there are too many degrees of freedom. Interestingly, biological high degree of
freedom systems are often governed by a much smaller collection of motion primitives [Mataric,
2000]. We focus here on action based discretization. Action based discretization consists of two parts:
(1) action parameter discretization and (2) action timing discretization, i.e. how and when to act. See
Figure 1. The most popular form of discretization is uniform discretization. It is common to sample
possible actions and action timings at fixed intervals. For the following algorithms, we focus on action
timing discretization. Experimental evidence of this paper and previous studies [Neller, 2000] suggests
that a fixed

The Decision Of Arm Citizens With Firearms
You are home alone late at night and you hear the front door slam open. You hear footsteps up the
stairs getting closer and closer. You are very scared and do not know what to do, so you call 911, as
you are calling your door swings open and the assailant is pointing a gun at you. It is too late; by the
time the police come the assailant has already taken your life. If you had a gun and reached for it
while you called 911, you might still be here today. That is the debate here in the United States and
will continue to be for many years to come. The decision to arm citizens with firearms is heavily
discussed on a daily basis with numerous different opinions and anecdotes. The scene I have
previously described does happen and is a primary example of why citizens should be armed. This
example is just one of the reasons citizens in America should own guns. It would be a much safer
country if law abiding citizens were armed as well as the criminals. Not allowing us to own firearms is
a direct invasion of the Second Amendment to the Constitution, a diminishment of freedom we have
earned. In addition, Criminals will continue to own guns whether it is illegal or not regardless of the
consequences. If those are not eye opening enough, the ability to own guns will cause more people to
be trained so that larger attacks do not occur. If gun owners had been present in some of the past
shootings, things might have turned out differently.
One heavily debated topic is if it is safer for

The Importance of Literary Devices in The Seven Ages of...
All the world s a stage the men and women merely players . This line is the beginning of the The
Seven Ages of Man and is a recurring question throughout the poem. You may wonder how the world
is stage, and through his use of similes, metaphors, and imagery Shakespeare explains this elaborates
on this question.
William Shakespeare s use of similes in the Seven Ages of Man helps to start the poem and give it a
meaning early on by adding emphasis on certain topics. For example in the beginning he uses the men
and women merely players (Line 2) to explain that people don t own the world but live in it. By using
this simile he explains how people progress through life like a play, making an entrance to the stage
and leaving afterwards. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Furthermore Shakespeare compares The Last Age to childishness and oblivion meaning that after you
have gone through all the stages everything you have built up demolishes and you start back at the
first stage. The last line of the poem helps you to determine how the play ends and because this
comparison is made it makes you aware of people in your life that have gone through a few of the
stages described by Shakespeare. Giving you the idea that the stages may occur in your life but in the
end it really doesn t matter what you have done, because it will most likely be destroyed. The idea that
what you have developed will be demolished makes you wonder what you are doing and have done
with your life.
Imagery is prominent in The Seven Ages of Man and is used to give meaning to a line or phrase
meaning while creating complex images. When Shakespeare describes the boy as a creeping snail and
sighing like a furnace you can image a drowsy boy who is on his way to school, but when described as
having a shining morning face it gives you a completely different idea. By placing two differential
images close together Shakespeare creates two separate moods in a few lines, which helps to
determine the difference between two phases. Later on in the poem he uses the same strategy and says
the man is bearded like a pard , portraying the image of a slightly older man who has moved on from
the childish phase of the young schoolboy. He also says he

The Dairy Industry Is Humane

agriculture industry, focusing on the dairy cattle industry, in the U.S.A. is humane and non abusive.
The Dairy Industry raises, breeds, and milks female dairy cattle. The cows are either bought from calf
farms or born at the dairy in which they are raised to be about one or two years old until they are bred
by a bull of their same breed. Then, once the heifers give birth, they are put into the milking process.
According to How much milk do cows give? , these cows will produce anywhere from 18,000 pounds
of milk per year to a record breaking 72,000 pounds per year. America has the fourth highest average
milk production records which is 21, 335 pounds per year as of 2015(1). These cows are milked twice
a day during their fresh period which is the 10 months after having a calf in which they are being
milked. The cows then rest for two months and are bred and milked for another 10 months. Overall,
milking cows in America live in the dairy industry for about six or seven years until they die naturally
or are killed off due to being not profitable to the dairy world. Animals are used in the agricultural
commodity industry due to their uses and lack of rights. Animal s rights are lower than human s rights
due to the fact that animals brains are not as developed as humans and cannot express feelings;
however, animals have basic rights to life and care from man (Rohr 20). Animals have

Importance Of Effective Communication
Good communication is a key tool that every member within the NHS must have and should be
willing to improve. This is because most jobs and roles will involve patient interaction on a daily
basis. Good and effective communication will not only make it easier for service users to follow
instructions such as how and when to take medication but will also make their experience a positive
one which helps with the overall goal of delivering a quality service.
Communication is an essential skill that is used every day within the NHS and when problems arise in
communication, the patient is at risk (Blizard, 2012). There are many forms of communication such as
verbal and non verbal etc. All forms of communication are as important as each other within the NHS.
The most common form is face to face communication and staff will realise that every service user is
unique and a different style and tone may have to be used to meet the needs of the individual
(England.nhs.uk, 2017). Within the hospital there are hundreds of people every day and it is no
surprise that there are often barriers which have an impact on effective communication. Most common
type of barrier would include language and physiological barriers, for example if the patient is not able
to remember very well this could have an impact on communication. It is the role of every member of
staff to try to overcome these barriers as best as they can to ensure effective and quality
communication. Staff within the NHS may often

What Is Organisational Behaviour
Organisational behaviour investigates the impact that individuals, groups and structures have on
behaviour within organisations, as this knowledge can optimise the effectiveness of these
organisations. A way to understand organisational behaviour is to understand the organisational
psychology behind it (Murray, Poole, Jones, 2006). Organisational psychology is the branch of
psychology that is dedicated to the study of individual psychological phenomena within organisations
and ways in which organisational processes has an influence on people. The field of organisational
behaviour was developed primarily by the contributions of psychology, sociology and anthropology.
Each of which has contributed significant ideas for organisational developments (Stuit, Szirbik, De

disciplines exerted less influence in the development of organisational behaviour which is economy,

Examples Of Insanity In Literature
Insanity and Its Effects on the Mind We are all born mad. Some remain so. Samuel Beckett quoted this
from his play Waiting for Godot which is about two men who keep returning to a particular tree
waiting for the same person to come, but he never does. The definition of insanity, best described by
Albert Einstein, is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results. Insanity
comes up in all aspects of the daily human lives. In the short stories The Fall of the House of Usher by
Edgar Allan Poe and A Rose of Emily by William Faulkner, both authors show how insanity can effect
one s well being and daily routines. In each story the author presents the theme of insanity by having

of madness; along with the narrator, the reader sees him go over the edge, (Neilson). The Usher s did

Analysis Of The Sec Charges Of Insider Trading Essay
It is always surreal when I see or read about someone charged with insider trading. Hence, today when
I saw the news of the SEC charges of insider trading against Mr. Cooperman, I was reminded of the
personal ordeal, I went through several years ago. The good news for Mr. Cooperman is that he is only
facing civil charges. If the charges are proven, he is going to face penalties, fines and possibility of
impairment of his ability to operate his hedge fund. Yes his legacy might be marred, but this,
potentially is a much better outcome than facing criminal charges.
SEC alleges that in July 2010, Leon G. Cooperman made illegal profits of approximately $4.1 million
by buying Atlas Pipeline Partners, L.P. (APL) stock, based on material nonpublic information, ahead
of the sale of one of its operations.
According to the SEC complaint, below are the salient dates and actions:
Mr. Cooperman was one of APL s largest shareholders and had great influence and access to APL. He
owned more than 9 percent of APL s common stock and had developed close relationship with the
corporate executives.
During the first half of 2010, Cooperman reduced his stake in the APL. In an April 30, 2010 email,
Cooperman stated that he was Scaling out of APL on strength. On July 7, 2010, Cooperman expressed
to a Omega Consultant that APL was shitty business.
Cooperman spoke with APL executive 1 on July 7, 19 and 20, on a phone. The executive informed
Cooperman that APL was negotiating the sale

Immigration And Chinese Immigrants
According to the online dictionary, the word foreign is an adjective and it is defined as of, from, in, or
characteristic of a country or language other than one s own. The noun foreigner is defined as a person
born in or coming from a country other than one s own. At first thought the words foreign and
foreigner may not carry a significant amount of weight outside of its denotation but what about those
who identify with either term? These people are looked as the others. In Anzia Yezierska s How I
Found America and the poetry of the Chinese detainees on Angel Island both display an array of
frustration because of mistreatment and their expectation of America were not met.
The reason most immigrants move over from their original country to the United States is that they are
in search of a better life and more opportunities. The Chinese are no different because a huge
population came during the 1900s in search of jobs. Many worked as farmers, miners and railroad
builders. Americans were not too thrilled so they accused the Chinese of monopolizing their jobs.
President Chester A. Arthur on May 6, 1882, signed the Chinese Exclusion Acts which prevented
Chinese immigrants from immigrating to the United States. From 1910 1940 when Chinese
immigrated over they were kept and interrogated at Angel Island immigration station in San Francisco
Bay. They were asked outrages questions and if they didn t answer correctly they would be deported.
The Chinese expressed their

A Reflection Of Dealing In A Patient Note Writing
I came in today feeling slightly defeated from yesterday. I love Jamie s training approach, it matches
my learning style perfectly. Jamie tries to let me do more and more things on my own. One thing I ve
been struggling with is writing the patient note in a SOAP format. I believe the reason I have been
struggling is because she stands over me and feeds me what to type. When she puts me on the spot and
gives the instruction to compose the note in my own words, Jamie always corrects me and has me put
the note in her own words. This has been having an effect on my confidence level. Consequently, why
I came into today feeling defeated. I planned to say something since I was not progressing on the
patient note writing, but I wonder if Jamie picked up on the same thing. Today, Jamie stepped away
and let me think it through on my own. This worked out so much better. I still have a lot of work left
to perfect these patient notes, but at least now the notes are in my own words and I m having an easier
time listening to the patient and knowing what I need to include in their assessment, screening, and/or
discharge note. The defeated feeling quickly dissipated and I felt more confident about describing the
interactions with patients. What I learned from the situation was to say something sooner instead of
allowing my confidence to take a hit. In addition, it also taught me something about myself as a trainer
in my current job and in future positions. I get like Jamie,

Middlesex Essay
Hermaphrodites and Society
Individuals are given the gift of life when they are born into this world. Many agree that everyone is
blessed and should not take their lives for granted. To be truly alive, individuals must be overjoyed
and pursue happiness. However, others would describe their lives as a joke. To be precise, many
would be ashamed of who they are. A very strong example of an ashamed soul would be Calliope, the
main protagonist of Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides. In the story, Eugenides tells the tale of Callie,
who is supposedly a monster because she is a hermaphrodite. Being a hermaphrodite indicates that
someone has the sex organs associated with both genders. By definition, Callie is an abnormal freak.
Eugenides ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In her eyes, she is a grotesque beast that cannot even stand to stare at herself out of humiliation and
shame. Callie is absolutely alone and is surrounded by others who look at her with disgust and wide
eyes. Eugenides utilizes tone in the story to help readers develop sympathy and pity towards Callie.
All throughout the passage, the tone of the story is serious. Callie acknowledges that her mother was
crying in the next room, and the doctors were working on Callie s disease in secret. The statements
convey that Callie s parents are also disappointed and ashamed of what their daughter has become.
Callie understands that her mother sheds tears thinking what she has done to deserve a defected
daughter. Callie s parents are so ashamed and overwhelmed that they took Callie to New York to try
and heal in secret instead of in the open. Callie s parents do not want others to see what has happened
to her out of concern for their daughter s social life as a normal individual. The thoughts and emotions
expressed give readers pity towards Callie and her condition. Callie muses that she longed to be held,
caressed, which was impossible. Callie wishes to be comforted and surrounded by others that loved
and understood her. Unfortunately, Callie views herself so much like a monster rather than an
individual that she is too far long to be comforted by anyone. Readers infer that Callie is

  • 2. Food Processing And Its Effects On Population Health The term food processing is often improperly defined. Although a lack of food processing regulations today may pose health concerns for the modern consumer due to its association with chemical additives and unnatural transformations, food processing in its most basic form can be defined quite simply as any procedure undergone by food commodities after they have left the primary producer, and before they reach the consumer (Welch, 2000). Therefore, food processing in and of itself is an extremely broad industry ranging in functions that, over the course of history, has had both beneficial and harmful effects on population health. Food processing has a long history dating all the way back to the earliest civilizations of humanity. From the ancient Mesopotamians, Egyptians, and Romans to the Aztecs and Incas, early civilizations from around the world recorded knowledge of how to preserve food with the limited materials available. Innovators they most certainly were, the ancient civilizations managed to preserve foods by adding salt, sun drying foods, and roasting over fire. While this may not be what initially comes to mind when we think of food processing in a modern context today, ancient civilizations did in fact alter the natural structure of foods thus initiating the food processing industry with techniques that, unknowingly at the time, utilized quite a lot of science. Although these contributions to the history of food processing were a significant ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

He is able to remember everything before the injury but cannot form new ones. Leonard learns to cope with his injury by repetition, leaving notes on his body, the Sammy Jenkins, a person with the same injury that his company investigated prior to the accident. Leonard ever since the accident, his sole purpose has been to get revenge on his wife s murderer. Leonard has a handful of facts about the murderer, the biggest one being that the murders name is John G. Along the way, Leonard gets help from two people, Teddy and Natalie, but each time he meets them, he doesn t remember who they are, why they are helping him or even if they are helping him or leading him down the wrong path. The film starts with Leonard killing John G. and throughout the movie we see how Leonard gathers the close to find and kill John G. DISCUSSION OF PLOT I would classify Memento as primarily a mystery film. Throughout the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Methodological Individualism In the social sciences, an endless debate is ongoing involving fundamental issues pertaining between methodological individualism and methodological holism. The reason this is such a deep rooted heated debate amongst researchers is the fact that it touches upon our most deeply seated beliefs about the nature of the individual and of society, our knowledge about these, and the idea of a good society (Udehn, 2002). According to Parsons (1937) methodological individualism is a claim in social phenomena which must be explained by showing how these results from individual actions, which in turn must be explained through reference to the intentional states that motivate the individual actors. Simply put, it is the claim that explanations of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Following economist Mark Blaug (1992), he believed that the effect to rule out the macro propositions that could not be reduced to the micro would mean that all research using the implication of the macro would have devastating effects for society, thus there must be something wrong with this methodological principle. What is then majorly argued by theorist against methodological individualism is the fact that working on theories based on an infinite amount of possibilities could come up with an infinite amount of conclusions, thus never coming to the route of the issue at hand. Secondly, much research conducted on the macro , which has not been able to be explained in terms of micro , has been used by researchers with great success for society as a whole, however if the methodological individualism model is correct, all of that research would be rejected, and since no one is willing to throw out good research, there is a problem with methodological individualism. Although methodological individualism is based on an infinite amount of possibilities, Mises (1998) writes, society is not a sui generis entity; there is I and you and Bill and Joe and all the rest. From a methodological individualism viewpoint, collective nouns describing social phenomena do not refer to independent substances. The idea the methodological individualism develops a reductionist explanation of social phenomena to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The series follows a group of law students being mentored by Annalise Keating, a prominent defense attorney. The group deal with multiple deaths, usually caused by them, by using anything ranging from their knowledge of the law to hired hitmen to get their way. The repeated theme in the series exposes the harsh reality of how the local government and the people within are corrupt. The students show how much they have become desensitized by being unsympathetic toward the shooting they were involved in. They even go as far as plotting to kill the victim after finding out he is still alive. The students only show concern for themselves and the people within their group. Oliver Hampton is the only character to openly express sympathy for the victims. He seems to be a personified version of the other characters conscience. Early in the series he is not as prevalent because the students have not been introduced to their life of lies, but as the series goes on and the students begin to lose emotion toward their actions, he comes more of a constant figure to add more empathy. Marketers use the immense emotional attachment children have to their advantage. Marketers are well aware of the children s favorites, they use that knowledge to keep generating money by catering the products to the children s interests. This tactic becomes very dishonest. It is marketing products by using social aspect that can affect one s behavior rather than highlighting the products actual features. It encourages buyers to purchase products for their personal gain, instead of the actual use of the product. For example, when a child watches Barney and Friends it does not insinuate that this child is more intelligent than a child who does not watch it. Although, since children start watching these kinds of shows at such a young age, it can damage their attention span causing it to not be as attentive as one who does not partake in watching shows that are solely for entertainment. Going on, a major issue between advertised brand names and unadvertised brand names starts to create a structural issue that does not just stay within children it even extends to the older buyers. It is perceived that advertised brand names are more effective than generic brands. I decided to revolve my case study around social anxiety (or a social phobia). It will focus on how a person s thoughts and beliefs can intensify an anxiety/phobia. If a person truly believes that he/she will not do well in a certain situation, those thoughts and feelings can turn that into a reality. It is up to the professionals to change these beliefs and negative emotions. Case Study Samantha is a middle aged woman, 35 years old. However, in this film Sicko he has really grown from the Michael Moore we all have grown to dislike, the film is very insightful, generating quality thoughts and questioning, why do we not fight more to advocate for a better health care system? Mr. Moore gave some exceptional facts with exception towards the end of the film, when he uses sarcasm and clearly political propaganda to show war enemies receiving the best of care, while hard working Americans receive subpart care. At every presidential election debate, the topic is brought up to gage on how each candidate will, during their presidency, rectify or even improve the current system that is already failing thousands of Americans. Mr. Moore has tried to exposed the industry for what it truly is, a profitable billion dollar business, with well paid CEO s and Doctors that get paid more based on how many surgeries the perform for ill patients and not by how well they ve treated patients with preventive care to avoid diseases. It is therefore crucial for educators to incorporate learning lessons and techniques that will help students build and strengthen their technology skills (McLaughlin, 2015). The literacy web tool that I am interested in exploring more extensively is Diigo. Diigo is an annotation tool that encourages students to collect resources, gather web pages, and add sticky notes and comments on their web page provided from the site (Diigo, 2017). Essential this site serves as a personal library where students can make notes and post interesting and helpful sources all in one place (Diigo, 2017). Students will also have the opportunity to share their web pages with classmates. What makes this site exciting is that students can upload a PDF file right onto their web page and make notes directly on the document. Therefore, students can opt to read science articles, take notes, highlight important information and complete assignments right on their computer. In today s education, students are expected to read and understand complex texts, read higher level informational texts, expand their academic vocabulary and communicate their reading and learning abilities through writing, to meet the Common Core Standards (Buehl, 2014). For some, it happens more than once. This is the case for our main character in the short story The Rental Heart , by Kirsty Logan. To begin with, the reader has no clue as to whether the main character is a boy or a girl. In my head though, I got the image of a girl. The heart was dusty and tarnished and utterly empty . This shows the reader just how heart broken she was. Her heart hasn t felt real love in a long time, so it is dusty. It has been abused many times, so it is tarnished. And because of all this, it leaves her with nothing more than an empty space. Maybe the island that she says she went to for a year isn t really an island that she actually went to either. Maybe she just closed herself down mentally, unable to deal with the world with a broken heart. That could have felt to other people, as if she was actually away on an island. What seems to be pulling this story towards science fiction the most however, seems to be the fact that even though it s all clearly one big metaphor for getting your heart broken and mending it again, it s nowhere close to how reality is. Heartbreaks come in all shapes and sizes. But in real life you can t just go well, tough luck, she wasn t the one for me, so I m not going to be sad about it . Healing a broken heart takes time in the real, non fictional world. Just changing it like it s nothing, that s the real science fiction in the story. • 16. Imagination And Reality In Ode To A Nightingale Hi my name is Dheer Bhatia, today I will talk to you about how Keats explores both imagination and reality in the poem Ode to a Nightingale. This poem is about how Keats escapes reality and goes to an imaginative world with a nightingale where he hears her songs and lullabies before inevitably returning to the real world. It s an expression of love, hence the word ode, to the nightingale and her songs. The creative piece I have chosen is an illusion painting that is painted by Robert Gonsalves, and it illustrates the separation between imagination and reality, and its difficulty in its distinction. Keats uses juxta positioning, imagery, structure and rhetorical questions to explore the two concepts of imagination and reality. Discrepancy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the art piece, there is a bed of water underneath the ships and the boat. The fluidity and movement of the waves are symbolic of the transition between imagination and reality. Keats desire to escape is shown through the rough brush strokes of the blue waves in the foreground. This suggests the transition to be difficult and problematic. The colour of the sea, blue, has connotations of serenity and peace suggesting the fate of Keats once the transition is complete. Keats longs to escape reality as he describes reality as where men sit and hear each other groan . This depicts reality to be tedious and dreary, which results in him loathing this concept. The word groan is an expression that conveys dread and despair, therefore Keats feels this way towards reality due to its monotonous and depressing characteristics. The action of groaning portrays an unappealing view of the world that Keats is longing to escape when conversing with the nightingale. Furthermore, the elongation of the word groan suggests the tedious and tiring effort to stay within the normal world and emphasises Keats desire to escape from and seek asylum in the nightingale s world. Keats expresses this through his actions when he goes Away! People may wonder why this wouldn t be the logical starting point seeing as how it s his birth and makes sense chronologically. The young man is relying on his good appearance to veil his sexual immorality. Being that he is handsome and attractive, people are reluctant to disapprove his behavior. In the first quadrant, the poet employs different stylistic devices, which include simile, as the young man is likened to a fragrant rose, and on the other hand, he is compared to a destructive worm, but all his dark side of life is hidden under his good looking and charming nature. What is important about this poem is the manner in which the speaker reminds the young man about his bad behavior and draws examples that makes him feel sorry about what he does behind his good looking nature. By the use of diction, imagery, diction, images, metaphors and other figures of speech, such as tone of voice, allusions, syntax and structure of the speech, the speaker warns the young man against his sexual immorality, and reminds him that there are detrimental risks associated with his behavior if he does not change. In the first quadrant, the speaker examines both sides of the young man s life where he looks at the darker and better sides but most importantly demonstrating the way he misuses his good looking ability to commit sexual crimes. • 25. The True Cause to the Spanish-American War The Spanish American War served to epitomize the imperialist sentiments inherent to American society of the late 19th century, as it was driven nearly entirely by jingoism and a large degree of sensationalism. When examining this war, many often conclude that it was the result of the pressure placed on McKinley by multiple expansionists within Washington that such men as Theodore Roosevelt and Henry Cabot Lodge were, perhaps, the primary cause for this imperialist endeavour. However, upon deeper inspection it appears to be that such men can not be noted as the sole, or even most responsible, factors in initiating the conflict. For it seems that the evidence is more supportive towards the notion that the general attitudes of the public were mostly to blame, and therefore, the cause of the war must lay with the sensationalistic yellow journalism which had grown rampant in that period as the underlying cause of the Spanish American War. Basically, as shall soon be demonstrated, it appears to be illogical for one to deduce that the pressure expressed onto President McKinley by his imperialist counterparts should be held accountable for the Spanish American War. To start, it may be entirely erroneous for one to claim that Roosevelt may have had any significant effect upon McKinley s decision to declare war on Spain. Roosevelt was the Assistant Secretary of the Navy, and thus, the only action one could possibly cite as any attempt to pressure McKinley into considering ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Neller* Department of Computer Science Gettysburg College Campus Box 402 Gettysburg, PA 17325 1486 Introduction As computer gaming reaches ever greater heights in realism, we can expect the complexity of simulated dynamics to reach further as well. To populate such gaming environments with agents that behave intelligently, there must be some means of reasoning about the consequences of agent actions. Such ability to seek out the ramifications of various possible action sequences, commonly called lookahead , is found in programs that play chess, but there are special challenges that face game programmers who wish to apply AI search techniques to complex continuous dynamical systems. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Finally, we compare three different means of action parameter discretization, including a dispersion technique that generates an approximate uniform sampling of closed action spaces. Action Based Discretization Artificial Intelligence search algorithms search discrete systems, yet we live and reason in a continuous world. Continuous systems must first be discretized, i.e. approximated as discrete systems, to apply such algorithms. There are two common ways that continuous search problems are discretized: state based discretization and action based discretization. Statebased discretization becomes infeasible when the state space is highly dimensional. Actionbased discretization becomes infeasible when there are too many degrees of freedom. Interestingly, biological high degree of freedom systems are often governed by a much smaller collection of motion primitives [Mataric, 2000]. We focus here on action based discretization. Action based discretization consists of two parts: (1) action parameter discretization and (2) action timing discretization, i.e. how and when to act. See Figure 1. The most popular form of discretization is uniform discretization. It is common to sample possible actions and action timings at fixed intervals. For the following algorithms, we focus on action timing discretization. Experimental evidence of this paper and previous studies [Neller, 2000] suggests that a fixed ... That is the debate here in the United States and will continue to be for many years to come. The decision to arm citizens with firearms is heavily discussed on a daily basis with numerous different opinions and anecdotes. The scene I have previously described does happen and is a primary example of why citizens should be armed. This example is just one of the reasons citizens in America should own guns. It would be a much safer country if law abiding citizens were armed as well as the criminals. Not allowing us to own firearms is a direct invasion of the Second Amendment to the Constitution, a diminishment of freedom we have earned. In addition, Criminals will continue to own guns whether it is illegal or not regardless of the consequences. If those are not eye opening enough, the ability to own guns will cause more people to be trained so that larger attacks do not occur. This line is the beginning of the The Seven Ages of Man and is a recurring question throughout the poem. You may wonder how the world is stage, and through his use of similes, metaphors, and imagery Shakespeare explains this elaborates on this question. William Shakespeare s use of similes in the Seven Ages of Man helps to start the poem and give it a meaning early on by adding emphasis on certain topics. For example in the beginning he uses the men and women merely players (Line 2) to explain that people don t own the world but live in it. Furthermore Shakespeare compares The Last Age to childishness and oblivion meaning that after you have gone through all the stages everything you have built up demolishes and you start back at the first stage. The last line of the poem helps you to determine how the play ends and because this comparison is made it makes you aware of people in your life that have gone through a few of the stages described by Shakespeare. Giving you the idea that the stages may occur in your life but in the end it really doesn t matter what you have done, because it will most likely be destroyed. The idea that what you have developed will be demolished makes you wonder what you are doing and have done with your life. Imagery is prominent in The Seven Ages of Man and is used to give meaning to a line or phrase meaning while creating complex images. When Shakespeare describes the boy as a creeping snail and sighing like a furnace you can image a drowsy boy who is on his way to school, but when described as having a shining morning face it gives you a completely different idea. By placing two differential images close together Shakespeare creates two separate moods in a few lines, which helps to determine the difference between two phases. The cows are either bought from calf farms or born at the dairy in which they are raised to be about one or two years old until they are bred by a bull of their same breed. Communication is an essential skill that is used every day within the NHS and when problems arise in communication, the patient is at risk (Blizard, 2012). The good news for Mr. Cooperman is that he is only facing civil charges. If the charges are proven, he is going to face penalties, fines and possibility of impairment of his ability to operate his hedge fund. • 42. Immigration And Chinese Immigrants According to the online dictionary, the word foreign is an adjective and it is defined as of, from, in, or characteristic of a country or language other than one s own. The noun foreigner is defined as a person born in or coming from a country other than one s own. At first thought the words foreign and foreigner may not carry a significant amount of weight outside of its denotation but what about those who identify with either term? These people are looked as the others. In Anzia Yezierska s How I Found America and the poetry of the Chinese detainees on Angel Island both display an array of frustration because of mistreatment and their expectation of America were not met. The reason most immigrants move over from their original country to the United States is that they are in search of a better life and more opportunities. • 43. A Reflection Of Dealing In A Patient Note Writing I came in today feeling slightly defeated from yesterday. I love Jamie s training approach, it matches my learning style perfectly. Jamie tries to let me do more and more things on my own. One thing I ve been struggling with is writing the patient note in a SOAP format. I believe the reason I have been struggling is because she stands over me and feeds me what to type. When she puts me on the spot and gives the instruction to compose the note in my own words, Jamie always corrects me and has me put the note in her own words. This has been having an effect on my confidence level. Consequently, why I came into today feeling defeated. I planned to say something since I was not progressing on the patient note writing, but I wonder if Jamie picked up on the same thing. Today, Jamie stepped away and let me think it through on my own. This worked out so much better. I still have a lot of work left to perfect these patient notes, but at least now the notes are in my own words and I m having an easier time listening to the patient and knowing what I need to include in their assessment, screening, and/or discharge note. The defeated feeling quickly dissipated and I felt more confident about describing the interactions with patients. What I learned from the situation was to say something sooner instead of allowing my confidence to take a hit. In addition, it also taught me something about myself as a trainer in my current job and in future positions. I get like Jamie, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
